GEHEIMER BERGRATH Prof. Dr. HIERONYMUS THEODOR RICHTER, ex-Director of the Freiberg Mining Academy and Honorary Member of this Institute (to give him the full title, which nobody ever thought of using in his genial and unceremonious presence, and the whole of which I have omitted at the head of this notice, as adding nothing to the virtue and value of the man I knew), died on Sunday, September 25,1898. The important investigations of Dr. G. F. Becker at Steamboat Springs, Nev., in 1885, aided by the analytical work of W. H. Melville, established the fact that sulphides were being deposited at the surface by hot ascending waters.' Steamboat Springs is situated near the eastern base of the escarpment of the Sierra Nevada, six miles distant from the Comstock lode.

I have attended these meetings, every year, since 1926 and have served on both the Pittsburgh and the National Executive Committees, so that I am fully aware - of the ruling of this organization regarding, "No Papers by Vendors". Since I am now classified as a VENDOR, I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the invitation to formally discuss these very interesting papers --all of which herald the coming of an entirely new era in the manufacture of quality steels. The adsorption characteristics of sodium silicate on scheelite, calcite, and fluorite minerals were investigated. Adsorption equilibrium took about 60 minutes. Adsorption data show that the masimum amounts of adsorption of sodium silicate occurs at about pH 9.8. The adsorptivity was in the order of calcite > fluorite > scheelite. The amount of adsorption of sodium silicate increased with the increase in temperature of sodium silicate solutions. The amount of adsorption of sodium silicate decreases in the low concentration range of ferrous sulfate, while in the high concentration range of ferrous sulfate, the adsorption of sodium silicate increases.

IT has been observed by a number of investigators that under certain conditions metals freeze into an aggregate of small hexagonal strands, parallel to one another and with their axes approximately in the direction of growth.'" This structure has been termed "cellular structure" and is explained in various ways by different workers, notably by Rutter and Chalmers." These investigators attribute the phenomenon to the presence of minute quantities of solute atoms which induce constitutional supercooling. However, if this is true, observations of the cellular structure in extremely pure substances, like frozen distilled water' and germanium of less than 0.0001 atomic pct metallic solute,' are difficult to comprehend. The purpose of this communication is to describe several observations made of the prismatic structure in zinc of 99.99 pct purity. Zinc single and bicrystals grown in a constant gradient electrical resistance furnace exhibit the cellular structure after etching in 15 pct HC1. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) It is noticed that the hexagonal substructure sometimes continues unbroken across the bicrystalline grain boundary.

Polychlorinated biphenyls were the basis of non-flammable askarel dielectric liquids wed in electrical equipment made between 1929 and 1978. Although PCBs were widely used in mine electrical equipment, the toxicity and environmental persistence of this chemical led Congress to ban its manufacture and use. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8838 summarizes the regulations imposed by the EPA on the use and disposal of PCBs, and describes the limitations of available substitutes. Recent changes in the regulations will impose additional requirements on the use of PCBs by the mining industry. This paper is an update of the material presented in the Bureau of Mines information circular.
