Bogardus in 1874.* Since that time, as far as we are aware, not much has been published on the relation of these two acids to each other, and to silicic acid, in the ordinary course of analysis of iron ores. Sidbec-Normines operates six large iron ore concentrate regrinding mills in parallel and open circuit at its Port-Cartier pelletizing plant. Grinding kinetics in these mills were characterized for slurry densities varying between 70 and 89% solids, using a lumped parameter size discrete model. Optimum grinding conditions were encountered at 83.5 to 84% solids. Higher densities decreased the normalized selection function and increased slurry short-circuiting, yielding a sharply coarser mill discharge. At lower slurry densities, the normalized selection function decreased and the mill discharge coarsened slightly. The grinding kinetic model predicted particle size distributions within the mill. These were found to vary significantly from the feed to the discharge end. This is likely to cause nonlinear breakage kinetics.

An abstract of a paper from the Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Bulletin of August 1978 by E. Stamboliadis, J. McHardy, T. M. Salman, Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, states that: “The recovery of gold, silver and other heavy metal cyanides from mill solutions is technically possible using the ion exchange technique. However, the costs involved are greater than the costs of the zinc precipitation technique used for gold recovery. There are two main reasons for this: one, the fact that in gold ore cyanidation metal cyanides other than gold and silver occupy most of the resin capacity and hence reduce the adsorption efficiency of the resin for the Au and Ag cyanides; secondly, the high cost of the eluting agents.” Resin, therefore, cannot in most cases be efficiently used for recovery of precious metals. With copper in solution, only 1.47% of the resin capacity is used for gold and 0. 8970 for silver; the rest is occupied by unwanted metal cyanides, such as copper occupying 73.7%. On the other hand, although activated carbon will adsorb copper cyanides, they will be preferentially displaced by gold and silver cyanides. Ion exchange is by one or two orders of magnitude more expensive than the conventional method of zinc precipitation. The cost of removing impurities, such as copper from the resin, is greater than the cost of recovering gold. With an oxide ore amenable to cyanidation and with a low content of other metals, such as may occur with some of the Soviet gold deposits, ion exchange would be an efficient as Carbon-In-Pulp.

Normal stress-fracture closure variation and stress-dependent fluid flow rates were calculated for rock fractures of different aperture distributions. This study shows that both the mechanical and hydraulic properties of the fracture are controlled by the large-scale roughness of the rock fracture. Hence the typical large-scale undulation wavelength of the rock joint dictates the suitable sample size to be used in normal stress and fluid-flow measurements, if results due purely to sample size are to be avoided.

While great strides have been made in the machinery for mining rock on the surface of the land, comparable advances have not been made with underground equipment. In fact, excavation of underground openings has actually declined in importance. On the other hand, surface mines are getting deeper and approaching the economic limits at which they can be worked. In the face of these approaching limits and the added problem of escalating labor costs, James Boyd, President of Copper Range Corp. and AIME, has suggested that "science and engineering must come to grips with the need for making subsurface openings more quickly and cheaply.

THE nature of the carbides that form during the tempering of martensite is a subject of continuing controversy. The only direct methods of identification available are X-ray and electron diffraction. These methods are subject to several difficulties. Only a relatively few diffraction lines of appreciable intensity emanate from carbide phases that are formed at low tempering temperatures. Furthermore, some overlapping of carbide and matrix lines occurs. There is also the problem that numerous lines in the patterns of possible carbide phases that may be present have about the same d-spacings. Increasing the number of carbide lines and eliminating the matrix lines can be accomplished by extraction techniques. However, there is always the possibility that a change in carbide structure will occur as a result of removal from the parent matrix. Therefore, such techniques as electrolytic extraction and making extraction replicas should be checked by other methods. For identifying small amounts of carbide in a tempered martensitic matrix, electron diffraction carried out in reflection is more advantageous than X-ray diffraction. To properly prepare a specimen for reflection electron diffraction, an etchant that will selectively attack the matrix and thereby cause the carbide particles to stand in relief should be used. During 1938 and 1939, an extensive series of geophysical surveys, employing both resistivity and magnetic methods, have been carried on in the Hawaiian Islands by the Section of Geophysics of the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Ground-Water of the Survey and the Division of Hydrography of the Territorial Government (see Fig. 1). During this time, surveys have been conducted on the islands of Oahu, Molokai, and Maui. Two distinct types of ground-water occurrence are being investigated: (1) The basal fresh-water lens floating on underlying salt water in obedience to the Ghyben-Herzberg principle (Fig. 2); and (2) perched ground-water (Fig. 3).

In my paper on "The Lixiviation of Silver-Ores by the Russell Process at Aspen, Colorado" (page 137 of the present volume), attention was called to the decrease in "chlorination " during the washing of the roasted ore with water, to remove soluble salts, before leaching with hyposulphite and Russell solutions. This decrease in " chlorination," which is due to conversion of the silver chloride to some other form not soluble in hyposulphite solutions, and which, for the sake of brevity, will be termed the "going-back" of chlorination, has been a serious obstacle to the successful operation of several leaching-works, and was at Aspen the only difficulty encountered. I have never seen any explanation of the cause of this failure to extract, in actual practice in the mill, the amount of silver chloride shown by laboratory-leachings to be present in the roasted ore; and the purpose of this paper is to record the conclusions arrived at concerning the cause of the phenomenon, and the data upon which they are based. Rapid growth rate of surface mining for coal has caused many states to increase the rigor and complexity of their surface mining codes. The promulgation of federal surface mining standards may cause those states containing federal land to amend their codes also. Presented is an up-to-date review of these codes with tabular summaries that divide the codes into operative functions. These summaries will be of use to new operators, multiple-state operators, and state officials. Suggestions are made for industrial efforts to present workable and acceptable amendments to these codes.

THE hydrogen-steel system has received considerable attention in the past several years. Recent experiments in this laboratory have shown that another group of operations, namely, sanding and grinding,' must be added to the already well-estab- lished list of phenomena that cause hydrogen to permeate steel. Qualitative tests which have been made with a very sensitive ion-gage type of detector similar to that used by Norton,' showed that sanding a steel surface caused hydrogen permeation. A metal type 6~6 vacuum tube was used as the ion gage with an electrometer to measure the ion c~rrent.~ The protective enamel coating was removed from the tube.
