THE absence of paraffin and other oil hydrocarbons in the soil, although they are concentrated in extensive deposits in some localities, the common distribution of plant remains through many formations that .are not productive for oil, and many other factors, seem to indicate the existence of an intermediate organic compound between the complex plant compounds and the petroleum hydrocarbons; and much evidence points to the humus acids or associated organic compounds, which are probably collected by surface waters and concentrated in certain areas by means of precipitation by electrolytes, which would be contained in sea water or possibly in various inland seas or lakes. PRESENT-DAY EVIDENCE There are many present-day evidences of the association of petroleum with humus acids. Binney, in 1912, made observations without explanations on the peat mosses of Down Holland, England, where he found petroleum being formed by decomposition, in the presence of an infiltration of sea water. The analysis of a typical peat will show its relationship to the humus acids under consideration. SAMPLE 'No. 1, SAMPLE NO. 2, PER CENT. PER CENT. WE the undersigned, being all persons of full age and citizens of the United States, and a majority residents of the State of New York, desiring to form a corporation pursuant to the provisions of the Membership Corporations Law for the purpose of incorporating, as provided in Section 5 of Article I. of said law, the existing unincorporated association known as American Institute of Mining Engineers, do hereby make, acknowledge and file this Certificate for that purpose, and do Certify as follows I. ALL the ores of any kind whatsoever, even though they be semiminerals and may be perfect in their qualities, have to be recognized by experienced and good sorters. These men must have a detailed as well as a general experience of the metals so that in this first preparation, which is most important, they may know how to distinguish the good from the bad, and to know what is rock and what is ore. They must use patience in this, breaking and cutting and king the ore from the earth. They must separate the good ore from the bad, avoiding as far as possible every occasion for poisoning it by traces of other ores, evil stones, or other things inimical to its nature. Finally, with the judgment of the eye and with tools, and, in the end, by roasting it with fire and then quenching it with water, or by washing and re-washing it, the ore must be made as pure as possible in order to join it better with the companions that seem to be the most beneficial for its needs. Ores would be useless stones without smelting. Therefore, when it is certain that such ores are of divers elemental mixtures, aid must be given to each one according to the evil ingredients [47v] that harm it. But because such evil qualities are things that are often not apparent to the eye, such as too great a burning, or too much earthiness so that when they are alone the fire burns these ores before it melts them, it is necessary to temper them with other materials. Unlike the furnaces employed in the reduction of ores to mattes and metals, the foundry-cupola has only melting to do. This looks simple enough; and its development has progressed through centuries by cut-and-try methods; but there is still much to be learned concerning the causes which underlie the production of defective castings, even from first-rate materials. There are other differences between the smelter and the cupola. The former is usually, the latter rarely, run continuously. In the smelter there is some chance for experiment, since rich slags can be treated again; while in the cupola the metal must be good for casting from the first tap to the drop of the bottom ; otherwise, heavy damage will result. In the smelter, the object sought is the production of metal or matte with a minimum loss in the slag; whereas, in the foundry, a variety of castings of different compositions must often be run from the same heat, one after the other. Experience with the cupola has shown that the melting should take place, throughout the heat, in one zone, the zone of maximum temperature, which is clearly marked on the cupola-lining by the severe cutting action of the slag and iron oxide. The design and operation of the cupola must conform to this condition. This conformity having been secured, other considerations resolve themselves into those details of construction which will involve least trouble and cost of repairs. The very high temperatures required to melt iron and steel in the cupola, leaving the metal sufficiently superheated for casting, render the use of water-jackets inadvisable. It is always possible to patch up the lining at the melting-zone between daily heats; and the rest of the lining is seldom affected enough by abrasion and chemical action to require replacement oftener than once in nine months. The cupola is practically a shell of steel, lined with the proper refractory material, and provided with a sct of tuyeres for the admission of air to burn the fuel and melt the metallic

IN view of the immense amount of attention that silicosis has received in this country in the past few years, it is timely to review the status of the silicosis problem at present. Who gets silicosis? The individual exposed to the inhalation of free silica dust. The effects upon the individual depend upon the amount of silica inhaled or, in other words, the severity of exposure, rather than upon any special variation or susceptibility among those exposed. A considerable amount of study has been given to determine what may be the role of predisposing causes in the development of silicosis. To mention one instance, at the Picher Clinic careful records were kept of all previous illnesses of the men examined as well as abnormalities present at the time of examination. Examinations of over 27,000 miners were made during the years the clinic was conducted under governmental auspices-a very fair sized sample. The general conclusions from all this work were that the incidence of silicosis is not appreciably influenced by racial, structural, or other inherent qualities; it is influenced by acquired defects-particularly as these affect the lungs. That is to say, the average run of human beings respond similarly to similar exposures to silica dust and those whose lungs are already impaired by tuberculosis or other pulmonary disease acquire silicosis more readily than those with healthy lungs. It may well be, and there is some clinical evidence in support, that negroes acquire silicosis more readily than do whites, but the infection factor has not been so carefully studied among negroes exposed to silica as it has among whites. We know that tubercle infection is more prevalent among negroes than among whites. There may be other factors concerned in the development of silicosis in negroes as compared to whites, but there is not available information upon which to base positive statements. The 1970's have been considered a pivotal decade for the mineral industries. Undergraduate mineral engineering education is relevant to this theme; in particular, there are three interrelated problems: 1) The goals, and therefore the course requirements, of the under- graduate curricula are in question; 2) The unit costs of undergraduate education appear excessive to those who bear the charges; and 3) The present social ambience detrimentally affects the work attitudes and career motivation of both prospective and in-course students. Any discussion of these problems must bottom upon recognized national needs for minerals and a technologically sound minerals industry staffed by competent engineers, particularly at the exploration, development and production levels. Fortunately, these needs have been recognized and to some extent quantified, and they are even now under further intensive study by some of the most competent members of society and the profession.

Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 189 consists of a record of the scientific data obtained in the iron blast-furnace slag investigation which is reported in Technical Paper 187, "Slag Viscosity Tables for Blast-Furnace Work." It includes a description of the method of preparing the synthetic melts, construction of an improved electric furnace, and refinements in laboratory methods of measurement. Only the general features of the work and the conclusions drawn from the experimental data can be given attention here. Silicates in the Liquid State In the manufacture of refractories, Portland cement, glass, and porcelain, and in pyrometallurgical operations, importance attaches to the behavior of silicate compounds at temperatures beyond the range of common experience. This field of research has not been investigated as carefully as its scientific and industrial importance would seem to warrant. Probably the most important of the unsolved problems in the, chemistry of silicates is the question of their stability in the liquid state. That little progress toward the solution of this problem has been made is not strange if there be borne in mind the difficulties attending experiments made at temperatures at which silicates become fluid, and the comparatively short time since it became possible to measure these temperatures. On the other hand, considerable progress has been made in the study of the compounds in the solid state because of the directness and simplicity of methods of optical examination.

EACH day, the fact becomes more evident that the ever-growing demand for oil is farther outstripping production, regardless of the increase in output throughout the past twenty years. The development of known oil fields and the prospecting for new ones along present lines are not resulting, in, and cannot bring forth, supplies large enough adequately to meet the oil needs of the country. The usual methods of prospecting-for new supplies are insufficient to meet the exigencies of the situation which threatens, in the not distant future, to reach a critical stage. Were it not that within the last two years new and prolific oil fields have been discovered in northern Louisiana, central Texas, and California, this crisis would undoubtedly be now at our door. Stocks are being exhausted in spite of the rapid growth of imports. The time is therefore fast approaching when some radical departures must be made in the method of prospecting and developing old and new fields in order to increase our oil supplies. Methods and chances, that have seemed unwarranted will not only be given serious consideration, but, according to the results promised, will be put to the test. Meanwhile, however, nearly all the oil fields are responding to the stimulus of higher prices, whereby enormously growing capital is attracted to this important industry, both here and abroad; the increase in our petroleum production at the present time is due to this circumstance. Yet, although a most active search is being made for possible sources of additional supply, one section of our country is not yielding the results that, in my opinion, it is capable of producing: I allude to the coastal dome belt of Texas, Louisiana, and Mexico. The United States Geological Survey has estimated that three-fourths of a billion barrels are available in the ground in the Coastal Plain of the two states just mentioned. Numerous papers have been written on the subject of the salt domes of the Coastal Plain and more or less attractive theories have been advocated by leading geologists to account for their origin and the presence of the oil, sulfur, and salt associated in them. "The Southern Cross mining district was discovered during the early rush of gold seekers over Montana following the discovery of gold in 1861. Placers were worked near the Atlantic Cable mine in 1866, and soon attention was turned to quartz lode mining. High grade ores were discovered in the North Atlantic claim, adjoining the present Southern Cross group. The early metallurgical treat¬ment of these ores was by means of arrastres, a crude form of amalgamating mill, illustrated on the page opposite. This old arrastre located by the roadside on Warm Springs creek, was built by Barker Bros. in 1879. Further discoveries overtaxed the capacity of this plant, and in 1875 Thomas' Stuart employed a contractor named Jeptha J. Corner to convert the old Wilson & Fifer sawmill located at the Big Spring into an up-to-date gold quartz mill. 'For this trans¬formation Corner received the sum of $1,400.00. The illustrations give a good idea of the nature of its construction. Practically no iron was used in the mill, excepting for the stamps, dies and cams and cam shafts. Whether or not the saving attained reached the limits of present day perfection is not known. There being no steam boilers available, the early prospectors believed in the principle of conservation of fire wood, water power was therefore used, generated by a ""direct-connected"" over-shot wheel. Water for power purposes was supplied by the nearby spring. History fails to record the tonnage treated in this relic of early Montana milling practice.The ores of the Southern Cross district have not proved readily amenable to mill treatment, but being largely composed of iron oxides, they are most desirable fluxing ores for smelter operations. The B. A. & P. Ry. extends into the district. Electric power is furnished by the Flint Creek 'station, three miles distant."

C W. ROLFE, Professor of Geology, Emeritus, has of-fered a prize of $250 for the most valuable contribu-tion toward a new, better, or increased use of any mineral resource of the State of Illinois. The prize is open to anyone engaged in research, either privately, commercially, or in connection with any univer-sity or college staff, or any state or national bureau or sur-vey. The work must have been done, or at least completed, curing the year named. Three copies of the paper or books must be in the hands of the chairman of the committee on or before 6 p. m., May 1, 1928. If an unpublished paper is submitted, it should be typewritten, double spaced, on 8 1/2 by 11-in. paper. Unpublished results of study, or papers or books pub-lished since May 1, 1927, and before May 1, 1928, may be offered in the competition; but the results of the study must show real present or prospective economic value. As it is the plan of the War Department to return 400,000 soldiers a month during the next four months, Colonel Arthur Woods, Special Assistant Secretary f War, has requested the Engineering Societies to assist the Government by soliciting their members to advise the respective societies, at the earliest possible moment, f any place where companies can employ returned soldiers. This request applies not only to the professional men who are returning but also to the miners, mechanics and other skilled labor among the enlisted men. Army discipline has not only made these men think more quickly but also more willing and obedient workers. The whole training has been conducive to regular habits and clean living steadying these men and fitting them to meet emergencies more quickly and has instilled more loyalty to their superiors and to their jobs. Further, the military instruction they have received has increased the men's powers f concentration. The War Department cannot too strongly bring before the employers of skilled labor the fact that the employment f discharged soldiers will be advantageous to the employer and economically beneficial to the country. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on milling and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, arid to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.
