MINING is one of the world's oldest industries and has pioneered the civilization of all new lands. Today, mining is not only one of the essential and basic industries of the world, but it is constantly growing in magnitude and becoming more important. We think that the most of our mining is done in the western portion of this country, but in the old State of Pennsylvania mines and products derived from minerals account for about two-thirds of the entire productive wealth of the State. As our forests are denuded, mining furnishes substitutes for timber in the way of concrete, gypsum board, etc. ; and as civilization increases the wants of mankind, mining is producing metals and minerals of every kind in increasing quantities. For example: during the past ten years the per capita consumption of copper in the United States has increased 49 per cent, to 14.56 Ib.; that of lead has increased 35 per cent, to 12.24 lb.; and that of zinc has increased 70 per cent, to 9.57 Ib. The consumption in European countries is about one-half of this, and there are other countries with large populations where there is virtually no consumption; so when all other countries catch up in consumption with our country, you can see what an enormous demand there is going to be for the metals, even to the extent of having to find substitutes for copper, lead, and zinc.

The growth of aluminum oxide particles in a nickel matrix was studied eve?. the temperature vange of 2140° to 2470°F. The instability of the dispersed alumina was shown to be independent of the crystal structure of the alumina. The activation energy for the growth of the dispersed alumina was found to be 84.7 1 2.0 kcal. The particle radius increased as a function of time. These results indicate that the growth is not diffusion controlled. It is believed that the rate controlling mechanism is the dissolution of the aluminum and oxygen atoms into the nickel lattice. THE strength properties of alloys which consist of a finely dispersed second phase in a metallic matrix depend upon the spacing between the second phase particles. It is therefore desirable to achieve very fine dispersions in these alloys. Furthermore, to retain the properties these very fine dispersions must be stable during fabrication and service of the alloys. The best known of the dispersion strengthened materials, the SAP type alloys, which consist of a dispersion of aluminurn oxide in aluminum, have exceptionally good stability up to the melting point of aluminum. There is evidence, however, that other dispersion strengthened alloys, even those consisting of refractory oxides in a metal matrix, may be less stable. This investigation is concerned with the stability of Ni-Al2O3 alloys in the temperature range in which these alloys are usually fabricated. The mechanical properties of Ni-Al2O3 alloys at elevated temperatures have been previously investigated by Crelnens and rant,' and Gregory and Goetzel.2 The behavior of these alloys in stress rupture tests appears to indicate that at temperatures below 1800°F they are highly stable. There is some doubt, however, as to their stability at the higher temperatures used during the conventional fabrication. Cremens and Grant, in preparing their test alloys, cousolidated, by powder metallurgical techniques, nickel powders as fine as 0.13 µ diam and alumina powders as fine as 0.018 µ. Metallo- graphic examination of the alloys following fabrication revealed that none had interparticle spacings of less than 2 µ. Considering the size of the original component powder particles, it is likely that the dispersions coarsened during fabrication. Gregory and Goetzel, in their studies of extruded alloys of 80 pct Ni—-20 pct Cr matrixes with nonmetallic dispersion, observed a definite coarsening of the alumina dispersions in alloys sintered at 2280°F as cantrasted to those sintered at 2000oF. Similar observations on the spheroidization and growth of thoria particles finely dispersed in a nickel matrix were made by D. K. Worn and S. F. Marton.3 As a result of such coarsening, much of the effort expended in the preparation of very fine powder mixtures would be lost. The mechanical properties of the alloys which had experienced coarsening would be expected to be poorer than if the original dispersions had been retained. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ni-Al2O3 alloys were produced from powder prepared by a coprecipitation technique. Aluminum hydroxide and nickel hydroxide were coprecipitated from chloride solutions of the metals. The mixed hydroxides were calcined to form metal oxides and the nickel oxide in the mixture was selectively reduced to nickel by treating it in hydrogen. Specimens were compacted from the resultant powder which consisted of a fine, uniform mixture of aluminum oxide and nickel particles. The compacts were sintered by resistance hot pressing4, a densification technique which requires exposure times of the order of only a second or less at elevated temperatures. A conventional sintering process was not used, since the temperature required for densification would have to be in the region in which the stability of the dispersion was to be studied. A series of hot pressed specimens were treated in hydrogen at temperatures from 2140o to 2470°F (1171o to 1355oC, for times up to 120 hr. Changes in the microstructures were studied by electron microscopy using the two-stage preshadowed carbon replica method.5 In performing a lineal analysis on a series of micrographs from each specimen it was found more convenient to determine the mean free path between alumina particles rather than particle radii as the parameter of growth. Illinois supplies coal to seven states in the Upper Mississippi Valley —Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and portions of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas. In this same area are marketed large quantities of coal from West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere; fuel oil from the crude petroleum supplies of the Mid-Continent fields, and natural gas from Louisiana, Kansas and the Texas Panhandle. The boundaries of this "Illinois coal-market area" are determined by competition from other coal fields and from other forms of fuel. Within the area so described 90 per cent of Illinois coal is marketed. Thus in the Southwest, an abundance of fuel-oil supplies and natural gas dominates the market almost to the exclusion of coal. The westward movement of Illinois coal in Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas is met by an eastward flow of high-grade coals from Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. In the lake-shore counties of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the market is dominated by Appalachian coals, cheaply carried over the Great Lakes and reaching the ports of Lake Michigan and at the head of Lake Superior. Illinois coals find their largest market in the southern and western sections of these two lake states. Only small quantities of Illinois coals are shipped east of the state line. This market area is occupied entirely by the neighboring coal fields of Indiana and the Appalachian coal fields in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Illinois Coal-makket Area , With these factors in mind, the map of the Illinois coal-market area may be drawn. Within this boundary is the area that is logically and economically served by Illinois coal. However, this area is by no means exclusively dependent upon coal from Illinois mines. The preponderance. of Appalachian coal in Wisconsin and Minnesota has been mentioned. Appalachian coal, also, moves in large tonnages into Illinois itself, particularly the Chicago district. The Iowa and Missouri local coals share the market with imported coal from Illinois; throughout the market area, fuel oil and natural gas are important factors in the total energy supply.

The solubility of water in silicate melts of various compositions was measured. The basicity of the silicate did not appreciably affect the water solu-bulity at low-base content (acid compositions). Near the orthosilicate composition the solubility increased with basicity for silicates in which the cation displayed a weak ion-oxygen attraction and apparently decreased for those in which the cation showed a strong ion-oxygen attraction; metasilicates of the former class dissolved more water than those of the latter. Temperature had little effect on water solubility. The experimental results are interpreted on the basis of two modes of solution, the contribution of one decreasing, and that of the other increas -ing, with increased melt basicity. In the former, solution occurs through interaction with doubly-bonded oxygen atoms and in the latter, through interaction with singly-bonded oxygen atoms, or, in very basic melts, through reaction with free oxygen ions. THE hydrogen content of a steel melt is in a large measure determined by water dissolved in the slag. In some glasses water may be a major cause of "seeds". Water vapor in the furnace atmosphere is the primary source in both instances. A knowledge of the mechanism of water solution in silicate melts should help in assessment of practical methods for its control in steelmaking and glass refining. Walsh et a1.l measured the water content, expressed as hydrogen, of 40 pct lime-20 pct alumina-40 pct silica and 62 pct manganese oxide-38 pct silica melts as a function of the steam partial pressure, in equilibrium with the melt. Tomlinson 2 and, also, Russell3 investigated this relationship for a molten 30 pct soda-70 pct silica glass. In all three investigations, the solubility of water was found to be proportional to the square root of the partial pressure of steam. Moulson and Roberts 4 confirmed this relationship for a silica glass. On the basis of the square root relationship, Tomlinson2 and Russell3 interpreted the solution reaction as "network-breaking", similar to that expected on the addition of metal oxides to silica. Walsh et al.' postulated two possible modes of solution, one the mechanism suggested by Tomlinson and Russell and the other the reaction of the water molecule with an oxygen ion to form hydroxyl ions. These two modes of solution suggest opposite effects of melt basicity on water solubility. However, little appears to be known about the effect of melt basicity on water solubility. Walsh et a1.l found, in the lime-silica system, that the water content increased slightly with increased basicity. As these authors pointed out, this does not appear to be in accord with their further observation that slags containing little or no silica dissolve very little water. Kurkjian and Russell5 measured the effect of basicity on water solubility in alkali silicates in the composition range 15 to 45 mole pct alkali oxide. They found a minimum in the water content at about 25 mole pct alkali. This was interpreted on the basis of two concurrent solution reacZions; one in which solubility was proportional to the activity of doubly-bonded oxygen and, in the other, proportional to the activity of singly-bonded oxygen. The present work was aimed at establishing the effect of basicity on water solubility in silicate melts over as wide a range of compositions as practical. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The silicate melt was equilibrated with a "carrier-gas" of accurately known water content, quenched, and analyzed for water by a vacuum fusion technique. Some pertinent details of the equilibration procedure, analysis technique, preparation, and handling of the silicates are given below. Gas-Silicate Equilibration. The apparatus used to equilibrate the melt with the gas mixture was similar to that used by Walsh et al.' but with some important modifications.6 Purification trains were provided for nitrogen and hydrogen; whenever air or oxygen was used as carrier gas the nitrogen purifiCation train was used with the copper furnace at room temperature. Gas flow rates were measured with capillary flow meters; bleeders filled with a mixture of dibromo and tribromo ethyl benzene (density about 2 g per cc) were used for convenience in controlling flow rates.

IT has often been stated that the steel industry did no research or development work in the decades preceding 1920. If restricted to organized research on the quality and field of application of structural and engineering steels, this statement may be true. But the industry did conduct a vast amount of process research during this period, although some of the projects were not carried out as separate organized research programs. Securing a low cost of tonnage production was the sole problem receiving serious attention from the industry prior to 1920, and today this is still the major problem. Those in the industry deserve much commendation for the important increase in production capacity per dollar invested and for the markedly lowered cost of production. In recent years, a distinct change may be noted in the attitude of the steel industry toward research involving its product. With the advent of high-speed machinery both in the manufacturing and transportation industries, steel as a quality engineering material has come to the fore. In the past, high-quality carbon steels and alloy steels have been introduced over a period of years, largely at the insistence of the consumer and partly prompted by research carried out by those interested in the use of the alloys. The commercial introduction of these materials made slow progress.

We have recently found that many lots of Zircaloy-2 and -4 tubing tested in tension deform to cross section shapes that are "polyhedral" rather than circular. The noncircular cross sections seem to result from a circumferential variation in plastic proper -ties and, therefore, in texture. We examined the diffracted X-ray intensity from (OOOl), {1010), {ll20}, and {1011} planes parallel to the tubing surface around the entire circumference. Tubing that deformed to a circular cross section showed <5 pct variation in diffraction intensity around the circumference from any of these planes. Greater intensity variations were found for all the tubing materials that developed non-circular cross sections during deformation. In each instance the number of intensity maxima and minima was consistent with the number of sides of the &apos;polyhedral" cross section. THE effects of crystallographic texture on the mechanical properties of zirconium, zirconium alloys, and other anisotropic hexagonal materials such as titanium and hafnium have been intensively studied. If the natural crystallographic anisotropy of these materials could be controlled by selected fabrication operations, a material could be produced with a texture, or preferred orientation, in which the maximum strength directions are in the stress directions of the structure. The permissible stress levels of the structure could then be increased. Rittenhouse and Pickle-simerl have shown that highly textured Zircaloy-2 plate can vary from 52,000 to 70,000 psi in tensile yield and from 62,700 to 122,000 psi in compressive yield strengths as a function of specimen orientation. Similar texture effects have been observed in Zircaloy tubing, whose mechanical properties differ depending upon whether the tubing has basal poles predominantly radial or tangential and upon the mode of testing. These same texture effects might be troublesome if the texture in the tubing is not uniform around the tube walls. This paper is concerned with the effects of nonuniform texture on the strain behavior of commercial Zircaloy tubing. BACKGROUND Previously, various lots of commercial Zircaloy tubing were tested under selected stress conditions as part of a program to determine the four quadrants of the yield locus. One of the testing procedures was uniaxial tension and it is the influence of texture variations on the tensile deformation behavior of the tubing that is of interest here. The effect of texture on the strain behavior in tubing is very apparent from a uni-axial tensile test.2 This behavior is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1 for three different tubing textures: 1) basal poles predominantly in the radial direction; 2) basal poles predominantly in the tangential direction, and 3) basal poles equally distributed between the radial and tangential directions. In the first example most of the grains are oriented for prism slip to operate to allow axial lengthening and diametral reduction of the tube. Reduction in wall thickness requires {1122} twinning, a more difficult operation than slip.* In the second example, the texture is such that *The singleCrystal analogy will be used quite often in this paper when strong texturesare being discussed. Diametral reduction requires twinning and again should be more difficult to accomplish. A specimen with basal poles equally distributed between the radial and tangential directions should exhibit about equal diametral and wall strains.* Table I shows the *Diametral strain is accomplished by a combination of circumferential and longitudinal strains. But, for the purposes of this paper, it will be considered as a strain causing a change in the length of a specified diameter.__________ strain behavior of two lots of tubing with different textures. The first tube has a texture with basal poles equally distributed between the radial and the tangential directions. The ratio of true thickness strain to true diametral strain is almost unity. The second tube has a predominantly radial basal pole texture and it is apparent that most of the total strain has occurred by diameter reduction, just as one would predict. There is over three times as much diametral strain as thickness strain. RESULTS We found that specimens from certain lots of commercially fabricated tubing did not retain round cross sections during uniaxial testing. Instead, the speci-

Finite-element analysis of slopes and a field trial of a slope support system have shown that a considerable potential for excavation reduction exists if slopes are designed with variable slope angles with depth, and if artificial support systems are made an integral part of the slope design. A cost analysis has shown that the savings for a straight 500 ft. high slope with artificial support can amount up to $900 per foot of horizontal pit extension. Horizontal stresses and displacements can be overestimated by up to 100% by employing a two-dimensional finite-element analysis instead of a three-dimensional one. Stress magnitudes differ considerably when comparing results from slope models subjected to a gravity stress field with slope models subjected to high horizontal stresses. Because the latter case appears to be predominant for open pits, slope stability analyses have to be adjusted accordingly. A field trial measuring peak accelerations and displacements has shown that the use of pre- shearing for termination bench blasts, in cases of already heavily fractured ground, can be more detrimental than beneficial.

Salicylaldehyde, a chelating agent for tin, has been found to function as a collector for the flotation of cassiterite. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance studies clearly show that salicylaldehyde can form a chelate compound in bulk and at the surface. Results are also given for the flotation of a tin ore with this reagent.

Research is defined, scientifically, as a "systematic investigation of some phenomenon, and also a search for hidden treasures." Chemists tell us that the hidden treasures of petroleum are far richer than the products which have been best known to us. However, these secrets will be discovered only through intensive and systematic, as well as scientific, industrial research. Indeed, the scope of the subject is so great that such an intensive research program should be assumed by a centralized organization supported by the petroleum industry as a whole. Such organization should assume the responsibilities for investigation of new products and development of markets for such products. Gasoline, the chief product of the petroleum industry has become a cheap commodity. The continual uncontrolled overproduction of crude petroleum, the intensive competitive condition in the marketing of petroleum products and the increase of refining efficiency and installing of cracking facilities, have all combined to lower the market value of gasoline. The purchaser has profited from the lower cost of gasoline by way of lower prices so that today the most important product can scarcely be manufactured at a profit. In other fields, manufacturing industries have diversified their products when faced by a similar situation. Thus, they have been able to widen their marketing outlook. Why cannot the petroleum industry employ the same tactics? Right now we are hearing much discussion concerning the development of a wider market for existing petroleum products and new products for existing or prospective markets. For instance, we can cite recent developments for use of propane, butane and ethylene. Butane has been found to be an efficient and inexpensive refrigerant, especially adapted to home refrigerating systems. Propane and butane fractions of natural gasoline may be shipped under pressure and may be used as a substitute for, acetylene in cutting torches in connection with oxygen. There is a possibility of substituting butane for gas oil in the carburation of coal gas, as we know that butane contains practically the gas enrichment as the same volume of gas oil and should prove to be a superior product for

The role of calcium, phosphate, and fluoride species in determining the zeta potential of apatite in aqueous solutions was investigated in this study. The zeta potential of apatite was determined by streaming potential measurements over a wide range of concentrations of potassium nitrate, calcium nitrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and potassium fluoride solutions at various pH values. While the addition of phosphate made the apatite surface more negative at all pH values, calcium caused a significant increase of the zeta potential only when the zeta potential was negative. Fluoride addition had only a minor effect on the zeta potential, but both negative and positive values were increased.

The object of this investigation was to analyze the recovery that arises when the stress on a specimen undertaking creep is reduced. For this purpose annealed specimens of high-purity aluminum were precrept under a stress of 1000 bsi to a strain of 0.08 following which the stress was reduced for various periods of time to 10, 250, 500, or 700 psi. When the original stress was reapplied the subsequent creep curve lay above that for the unre-covered state and below that for the original annealed state. Analyses on the kinetics of this recovery as a function of the temperature gave a stress-sensitive activation energy that decreased as the reduced stress was increased from a value of 64,000 cal per mole at 10 psi to 37,000 cal per mole at 750 psi. Recovery was also detected and measured during creep under the reduced stress. Following a short initial period, the creep rate under the reduced stress increased monotonically until it reached the secondary-creep rate for the reduced stress. The temperature dependence of this phenomenon was also shown to be correlatable in terms of the previously deduced activation energy for recovery. The activation energies for creep of most pure metals at high temperatures have been shown to agree well with those for self-diffusion.&apos;j2 Since the true secondary stage of creep is usually due to the steady-state balance between the rate of strain hardening and the rate of recovery, it is generally thought that the activation energy for recovery of the creep-induced substructure equals that for creep itself. A shoft time ago, however, Ludemann, Shepard, and Dorn~ found that the activation energy for recovery of the creep-induced substructure in high-purity aluminum under zero stress was almost twice that for self-diffusion, namely about 65,000 cal per mole; obviously recovery under reduced stresses differs in some significant way from the recovery that accompanies the secondary stage of creep. The major purpose of this investigation is to study the effect of stress on the re- covery of the creep-induced substructure in order to provide a better understanding of the recovery mechanism itself. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE High purity aluminum, containing 0.004 pct Cu, 0.002 pct Fe, and 0.001 pct Si, used in this investigation, was in the form of 0.100-in.-thick sheet which has been cold-rolled to the H-18 temper. Creep specimens were milled from the sheet with their tensile axes in the rolling direction. All specimens were then heated at 686°K for 1 hr followed by air cooling in order to produce an annealed structure which exhibited a uniform equiaxed grain size of about 4 grains per mm. Tests were run in creep machines fitted with Andrade-Chalmers type of lever arms so contoured as to maintain the stress constant to within 0.05 pct of the reported values. Constant temperatures to *O.l°K were obtained by complete immersion of each specimen in a temperature-controlled and agitated bath of molten KN02-KNOs mixture. Where changes in temperature were involved, the change was effected in less than 2 min by manually replacing one bath by another controlled at the second temperature. Displacements over the gage section were sensed by linear differential transformers, the output of which was autographically recorded. THE subject of steel cleanliness has always been a major one in the steel industry and much study and effort have been expended toward improving the cleanliness of steel and meeting the ever increasing demands of customers for steels that will give better performance in service and permit economies in design and efficiency of the final product. Sometimes wee may feel that-these demands are unnecessarily stringent, and probably this is true in some instances. However, the pressure for higher quality has acted as a stimulus toward improving quality and, therefore, has tended to promote progress. In this paper, the whole subject off cleanliness is covered in a general way. In the discussion&apos; on steelmaking practices, remarks have been limited to basic electric- furnace practice in the making of alloy steels.

This paper proposes an unconventional, simple, and practical method of measuring mining-induced ground stresses with hydraulic borehole pressure cells. The method is a direct ground stress measuring technique. It does not require the value of deformation modulus for back-calculation of stresses; instead, it directly measures the ground stress in situ. The applicability and practicality of the technique are shown by two case studies. The technique may be applied to monitoring a stress buildup that may lead to mine roof failure or to rock and coal outbursts.

Since the delivery of our paper on Some Comparative Properties of Tough-pitch and Phosphorized Copper,1 a new brand known as "oxygen-free high-conductivity copper" (brand OFHC) has become available to consumers. It was thought desirable to make a comparison between the properties of this material and those of the materials covered by our original paper and its discussion. Preliminary tests had indicated some notable differences. A billet of oxygen-free high-conductivity copper was taken from regular production. A chemical analysis of the particular billet was not made, but the producer of the material has given as typical the analysis shown in Table 1. The

THE Institute of Metals Division opened its series of meetings by a session* on lead, R. S. Dean be-ing in the chair and G. 0. Hiers acting as vice-chairman. A large and representative audience listened to the papers in the abstract and contributed an inter-esting and fruitful discussion. The main points of these papers and discussion are given below: In the absence of Carl E. Swartz, the summary and conclusions of his paper, "A Study of the Lead-Tin-Cadmium System with Reference to Their Use as Solders," were read. Swartz investigated a number of alloys in the lead-tin-cadmium system and prepared a diagram representing the solidification ranges of these alloys. He also made tensile strength tests of joints made with these alloys, and compared these with joints made with ordinary lead-tin solder. The tests showed solders containing cadmium were equally strong as the lead-tin series and that the cadmium alloys were suit-able in other respects for use as solders. In general, solders of the composition near to the ternary lead-tin-cadmium eutectic appeared to be the best for most soldering work although compositions widely differing are desirable for special purposes. The lead-tin-cad-mium solders are finding a market particularly in the fields requiring lower solidification temperatures than common solders. Mr. Darby opened the discussion and asked whether it was a fact that the lead-tin-cadmium solders were more useful than ordinary solders on galvanized and tin-plated sheet. C. Smith said he thought it to be a fact that galvanized sheet was more easily soldered by the lead-tin-cadmium solders than common lead-tin-solder. Continuing, Mr. Smith showed lantern slides of his own investigation of the thermal diagram and recommended the 70 per cent lead, 20 per cent cadmium, and 10 per cent tin for general employment. He thought the author did not differentiate between wetting and alloying and pointed out that wetting was more a ques-tion of the flux than the metal. In some cases a definite alloy was formed by soldering and in some no evidences of alloying were found. Illustrating the former case he showed slides and demonstrated that failures always took place longitudinal with the brittle compound alloy and transversely across the solder itself.

In this paper, major attention is given to misfires in mines where electric multiple shot-firing is the system used. Misfires are sometimes caused by one action or condition and at other times by a combination of two or more. They may be divided into two classes: (1) those caused by workers in the mines, (2) mechanical or manufacturer&apos;s causes. The second cause will be discussed first. Misfires Caused by Faulty Detonators The important part of an electric blasting cap, to the user where multiple shot-firing is done, as in the steep-pitch, thiek-vein, anthracite mines, is the bridge wire. In single shot-firing this factor is not apparent, but in mines where multiple firing is done any variation in the resistance of the bridge wire, where full or even rated battery capacity is required, will most likely cause a misfire. The reason for this is obvious. If the resistance in the bridge wires is not the same, some of the detonators will fire because of their greater comparative resistance. Variance in resistance of bridge wires is caused by a slight difference in the diameter of the bridge wire, also by a difference in the composition of the bridge wires. Again, where the bridge wires have become rusted, there will be a variance in resistance. About the year 1922, one of the large coal companies was greatly alarmed by the number of serious and fatal accidents caused by misfires. The general manager issued an order that these accidents must be greatly reduced, and if possible, entirely prevented. The officials at the mines had to determine the various causes of misfires and have them corrected. The rock contractors who use large quantities of 60 to 80 per cent. explosives and do all firing electrically were thoroughly instructed as to the proper methods of doing their work, and closer supervision was given to their work. The manufacturer&apos;s representatives stressed the importance of the use of galvanometers; accordingly these were purchased and used. Larger firing lines were installed under the supervision of a demonstrator of the company manufacturing the caps and explosives. However, misfires again occurred and it was evident that the source of the trouble was not wholly

SEYBOLT et al.&apos; have detected various silica films formed on a 3 pct Si-Fe alloy after heating at low oxygen potentials with the electron diffraction method, and they have made some observations on the H,0/H2 ratios required to form them. The purpose of this note is to describe the structure of the oxide film formed on either mechanically or electrolytically polished surfaces of a 3 pct Si-Fe alloy containing small amounts of manganese after heating at low oxygen potential.
