Hostility is a characteristic of the environment in underground mines. Nature opposes man's efforts to remove mineral deposits, and this condition is recognized when mining is described as winning minerals from the earth. Evidence of this conflict is the action of natural forces to close excavated passageways. In many mines, this behavior of the surrounding environment is an ever-present and ever-changing problem despite much research and empirical study. Geological conditions change abruptly and may result in rock bursts, the inrush of water, or variations in rock hardness. Although aspects of these problems will become intensified as the rate of mining increases, they are not considered in this discussion. Emphasis herein will be on the changes in the atmospheric environment. Men underground work in an ever-changing, alien, ambient atmosphere. Many conditions are encountered that will affect their health and safety unless properly controlled. Potentially explosive gases are released from minerals as they are mined or enter from the surrounding earth. Some mining methods generate noxious gases. Natural processes and diesel equipment can steal life-sustaining oxygen. Airborne dust may cause lung diseases when breathed by miners in excessive amounts and by affecting visibility, introduce safety hazards. Deep mines pose heat problems that may be aggravated by high-speed mining. The deleterious effects caused by these changes, and their mitigation, are subjects of this discussion. THE UNDERGROUND ATMOSPHERE Health and safety problems from changes in the underground atmosphere have been apparent since the beginning of mining. Alleviation of these problems has been by ventilation with normal air from the earth's surface that flushes away the vitiated mine atmosphere. The objective is to provide atmospheric conditions essentially similar to those that man is accustomed to on the surface.

Detailed analysis is given of the influence of water on the strength of limestone. The mechanism involved in strength reduction is described. Such analysis is of importance in geological, civil, constructional, mining, and metallurgical engineering and is closely associated with the rock mechanics involved in these areas. Mine dumping, slope stability, excavations, sedimentation, etc., are very much affected by the presence of water. Tensile stresses, which have an important role in the development and propagation of fissures, are produced by water in cracks. The development of fissures can be responsible over a long period of time for an ultimate, catastrophic failure.

Experiments on ammonium carbonate leaching of native copper ores crushed to 1-inch size showed that in 30 days 55 percent of the copper was extracted from 0.7 percent copper conglomerate-type ore, and 85 percent was extracted from 2.1 percent copper amygdaloid-type ore. Cupric ions were not necessary to initiate leaching, and dilute solution containing only 2.2 grams per liter NH3 and 1.9 grams CO, was a suitable solvent. Copper was recovered from the leach liquor by solvent extraction and electrolysis of the strip solution. Cyclic testing of the leach-solvent extraction-electrolytic procedure is in progress on a 6-ton charge of minus 12-inch conglomerate-type ore assaying 2.2 percent copper. Oxygen is metered to the closed leach vessel as required by the leaching reaction. Initial copper dissolution was much slower than from minus 1-inch ore, but the leaching rate then markedly improved.

A method has been developed For predicting the critical temperatures and critical pressures of binary mixtures of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and oxygen with the normal paraffin hydrocarbons. For carbon-dioxide and hydrogen-sulfide systems, relations are presented that take into account the peculiar behavior of mixtures with closely boiling components, such as carbon dioxide-ethane and hydrogen sulfide-propane mixtures which exhibit minimum critical temperature points. For hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon-monoxide systems, the extreme critical behavior caused by wide differences in pure component properties is established In addition, those fixed gas-paraffin systems which resemble paraffin-paraffin systems are also accounted for. For a mixture of known composition, the pure component critical temperatures, critical pressures and normal boiling points are all that are required to determine its critical point. Graphical relations are presented relating Tc and PC , of the mixture to the pure component properties. From the treatment of 12 carbon-dioxide and hydrogen-sulfide systems reported in the literature (74 mixtures), the expected error lor the critical temperature is approximately 1.5 per cent, and for the critical pressure, approximately 2 per cent. From the treatment of six hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon-monoxide systems reported in the literature (30 mixtures), the expected error for both the critical temperature and critical pressure is approximately 2.5 per cent. The relationships, which have been developed with only normal paraffins as the hydrocarbon components, may be extended to those isoparaffins and olefins which fall within the allowable volatility ranges. INTRODUCTION Many of the fixed gases — carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and oxygen — occur in natural mixtures with hydrocarbons. Carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are frequent components of the fluids produced from underground petroleum reservoirs. Nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are present in varying quantities in most natural gases and gas-condensate well effluents. Hydrogen mixtures are of considerable interest in many phases of refining processes of petroleum. The determination of the critical temperatures and critical pressures of such mixtures is of value in vapor-liquid equilibrium studies, for the prediction of the characteristics of underground reservoirs, and for reduced-state correlations of PVT, transport and thermodynamic properties. The accurate estimation of the critical point for binary mixtures is an important initial step toward a complete analysis for the establishment of the critical temperatures and pressures of multi-component mixtures. Methods for predicting the critical temperatures and critical pressures of binary hydrocarbon systems have already been presented in the literature.8 It is possible to apply these existing methods to fixed gas-paraffin mixtures, but due to their unusual critical behavior, values calculated deviate considerably from experimental values. For systems containing trace quantities of the fixed gases, these methods are acceptable; however, for systems containing more than 5 mol per cent of the fixed gases, these utterly fail to produce reasonable critical values. Consequently, in this study a method has been developed for handling such binary mixtures over the entire composition range. CARBON-DIOXIDE AND HYDROGEN-SULFIDE SYSTEMS The critical behavior and the vapor pressure behavior of mixtures of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide with paraffinic hydrocarbons may be quite similar or quite dissimilar to that of paraffin-paraffin mixtures, depending on the volatilities of the components involved. To have been chosen by you to give the Howe Memorial Lecture is the greatest honor I have ever had and I should like to have you know that I appreciate it deeply. Many years ago I had the privilege and the pleasure of working with Professor Howe in the private laboratory which he had established in his home at Bedford Hills, New York. Without doubt he was one of the world's greatest metallurgists and so you can imagine what a difficult task it has been for me to live up to his teachings. Every morning Professor Howe would outline the work he wanted done and the recollections of those conferences are clear to me to this day. Sometimes he would ask me to ride in his automobile and the chauffeur had full instructions to go no more than fifteen miles an hour. If he did so, Professor Howe was sure to rap upon the man's shoulder with his cane. I assure you, however, Professor Howe's thinking was not at that rate. His homely advice, his patience and his perfect control of the English language still impress me. Many times I heard him dictate a complicated paper on metallurgy and never find it necessary to change a single word. There are no better words to describe the character of Professor Howe, in my opinion, than those used by Professor Sauveur when he presented the John Fritz Medal to him in 1917: "Lover of justice and humanity Public servant and public benefactor, Master of the English Language, Loyal and devoted friend, Untiring and unselfish worker in an important field of science." I hope you will bear with me with the same patience and understanding which he used to give to me. The peculiar behavior of steel at the yield point has long been known and has been the subject of much research, both in this country and abroad.',' Many theories, including some of mine and my colleagues, have been suggested, but none of them, in our opinion, fully explains to our satisfaction why the phenomena occur. Of particular importance has been the work of Nadai,3 Siebel and Pomp,' Sachs and Fiek,5 Rawdon,0 Kenyon and Burns,' Gensamer," Gensamer and Meh1,0 Davenport and Bain,'" Fell," Deutler,12 Brinkman,13 MacGregor,14 Hollomon,15 Cot-trell,16 and Palm." The question of what is occurring during this singular behavior is not only of interest from an academic point of view, but is of great practical importance for at least two reasons: 1—The highly localized plastic flow which occurs during the deep drawing of light-gage steel gives rise to surface markings which seriously mar its appearance, Fig. 1. If the forces causing the deformation are primarily tensile forces, these surface markings occur as depressions in the surface. Whereas, if the forces causing the deformation are primarily compressive, irregular lines of elevations occur. These surface markings are known as Luder's lines, Hartmann lines, the Piobert affect, and, in the shop, as "stretcher strains." 2—The steel is in the most suitable condition for deep drawing after the yield point phenomena have been removed. When this is done, the steel may be deep drawn more easily and to a greater extent.' It should be mentioned that steel is not the only metal which shows this peculiar behavior at the yield point. Stretcher strains occur, also, during the deformation of some copper-nickel-zinc alloys." The purpose of this paper is not an attempt to describe what causes the steel to behave in this peculiar manner, but an attempt: l—to describe what is taking place at the yield point; and 2—to show the influence of the rate of deformation on the tensile properties of some plain carbon steels. As is well-known, there are two methods of deforming a metal in tension: 1—by actually hanging an increasing amount of dead weight on the metal; or 2—by deforming the metal at some given rate or rates by means of oil pressure cylinders, screws, etc. With the first method, the load is always present and, clearly, no drop in load can ever occur while the steel is deforming. With the second method, the registered load is the resistance of the steel to the deformation being imposed upon it. The second method is the one most widely used, and is the one referred to throughout this paper. WITH coal-preparation plants becoming more complex and containing widely diversified types of equipment and processes, it is necessary that considerable control be exercised in their operation. Rising mine costs make it imperative that close check be made of plant efficiencies to assure a minimum loss of coal to the refuse bank. Further, much of the coal sold today is sold on a competitive specification basis, and this makes it necessary to provide frequent analyses and inspections. Many ' plants are required to operate on a two or three-shift basis, and as a con- sequence an efficient organization is required to eliminate down time and provide for smooth low-cost operation. ORGANIZATION Probably the most important item for successful operation of a preparation plant is a capable, properly organized staff, with the individual workers properly informed and well trained for their particular jobs, clear-cut lines of authority among the supervisors and in general a standard operating procedure for most conceivable conditions that may occur. The idea of placing the older, partially disabled and generally incompetent coal miner in the cleaning plant, as was the practice on the earlier tipples, is entirely inadequate in a modern complex cleaning plant. The new plants require intelligent, alert, and reasonably educated men. With perhaps millions of dollars invested in an installation, it is poor business to use other than a well organized, well trained, and properly supervised force. Organizations naturally must vary with the size of the plant and local conditions; whether it is a central cleaning plant at a distance from the mine organization or one of several cleaning plants operated by the company. Smaller operations can be operated by a washery foreman, under the supervision of the mine superintendent or perhaps the "outside" superintendent. Large installations should have a plant superintendent either responsible to the mine superintendent or preferably, where possible, responsible to a preparation manager or engineer. Trinidad, British West Indies, is an island near the north coast of South America, situated between latitudes 10" and 11" N., and opposite the numerous outlets of the Orinoco River Delta. It is separated from Venezuela by the Gulf of Paria (salt water) and straits over 5 mi. (8 km.) wide. The area of the island is approximately 1750 sq. mi. (453,-250 hectares) and the population is approximately 400,000. The climate is tropical with an annual rainfall of from 45 to 60 in. (114 to 152 cm.). The oil fields consist of several units, or fields, located in the southern half of the island. Approximately 90 per cent. of the total production has been yielded by fields situated within 7 mi. (11.3 km.) of the famous asphalt lake and on the southwest peninsula. The most important producing fields, or units, are the following, which are shown on the accompanying map: Brighton, or Pitch Lake Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated beside the famous Pitch Lake; it even encroaches on the lake. Vessigny Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated 2 mi. (3.2 km.) south of Pitch Lake. Lot One Field, operated by the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and Stollmeyer, Ltd., is situated 3 mi. south of Pitch Lake upon Lot One of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Parry Lands Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., is situated 31/2 mi. south of Pitch Lake on Lot Three of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. Point Fortin Field, operated by the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., is situated at Point Fortin, 6 mi. southwest of Pitch Lake. Interfacing new or improved unit operations SUBMODULES with the EXECUTIVE of a macro analysis simulator usually requires modification of the input data. For example, particle processing SUBMODULES that are sufficiently general in nature to provide useful predictions require input data for rather narrow size fractions. Such data is not always available for the EXECUTIVE and must therefore be generated by the SUBMODULE. A successful interface to allow incorporation of a new SUBMODULE for comminution and one for classification in a general stream state flowsheet simulator is presented. The general nature of the SUBMODULES, as well as the logic of expanding and contracting the required data input is discussed.

During the past ten years, the trend on the Mesabi Range has been toward the establishment of integrated operations which mine, concentrate, and pelletize the large reserves of magnetic taconite. However, since the supply of open-pit ores of acceptable quality is by no means inexhaustible, it has been proposed that it be supplemented by developing the magnetic taconites that extend down dip past the economic limits for open-pit methods. In Phase I of a long range study, Pfleider and Yardley1 collected information on the general character of the Mesabi iron formation at depth and proposed that an underground lane-and-pillar mining system be considered to extract those high grade layers where they might exist over a considerably areal extent. An approximate cost estimate was included initially, with the thought of later developing a feasibility study as time permitted.

ROTARY kiln operators will agree that some of the most severe conditions a refractory must stand occur in the hot zone of a kiln burning Portland cement, dead burn dolomite, magnesite, periclase, and similar materials. Frequently the operator is faced with factors beyond his control which drastically shorten the life of refractories. Shutdown due to mechanical failure can be serious if the period is of sufficiently long duration to cause the dropping of coating or the loosening of the lining. A change in slurry can affect the coating and cause ring buildup. A change in type of fuel and its effect upon the flame can cause a shift in location of the hottest zone. Weekend shutdowns or any other interruption can cause the operator trouble and may damage the refractories, since stopping and starting a rotary kiln is certainly more difficult than stopping and starting a motor. Some operators have tried to set an estimate of damage for each shutdown in equivalent days of running time. Conditions affecting the refractory may be roughly grouped in four classes: chemical attack, mechanical stress, thermal shock, and abrasion. Chemical Attack: The drive to obtain maximum production through a kiln demands maximum operating temperatures, temperatures which are limited more by the ringing up or melting of the clinker. This can cause interface temperatures at the junction of coating and refractory which require the use of a basic kiln block to withstand the chemical attack. Chemical changes take place within the refractory itself, especially in chemically bonded or unburned kiln blocks: These changes cause the formation of the ceramic or burned bond. Migrating liquids or fluxes from the kiln charge have an effect within the refractory and lead to mineral or glass formation. The alkalies, sodium and potassium, migrate into the refractory as silicates, chlorides, sulphates or other salts. They may move under capillary action or may be caused to move by volatilization with condensation in the cooler portion. Mechanical Stress: Concentrated stress may be caused by several factors or combinations thereof. 1-The rings of refractories must be kept tight and rigid within the kiln, and this alone demands considerable force to hold the blocks in place. So that the force will not be concentrated, the blocks should fit the circle as perfectly as possible, with the faces in contact overall. 2-As the kiln is heated, thermal expansion takes place at the hot end of the kiln block. Since this disturbs the plane face it too can cause a concentrated stress at the two ends of the block, and shearing stress can be set up within the brick itself because of the difference in expansion between the two ends. 3-If a lining becomes loose and moves in the shell very severe stress can be set up, and as the kiln rotates this load changes and gives the effect of repeated loading. Permanent expansion of the refractory can also cause severe loading. 4-Not least important, flexing of the kiln is frequently the cause of concentrated stresses. Thermal Shock: Thermal shock, the result of heating and cooling too rapidly, occurs on starting and stopping or when a large patch of coating drops, exposing the bricks. Again, its destructive effect is often the result of phase change, liquid to solid or the reverse; dense refractories loaded with glass-forming impurities are particularly susceptible. Thermal shock is a problem with refractories set in the wall or roof of a stationary furnace, and becomes even more serious in a rotary kiln, the tendency to spall being magnified with movement and concentration of stress. Uniform rate of feed and loading insures both better coating and a more uniform stress. Abrasion: If the refractories do not take a coating, abrasion can become a most destructive factor. Movement of the lining in shell or movement of loose blocks causes abrasion, which is also most destructive if the refractories do not take a coating. An analysis of the problem of basic lining for the hot zone reveals, therefore, a number of desirable characteristics: high refractoriness, basic chemical reaction, resistance to spalling, good strength at all stages, ability to take coating, true sizing, volume stability, and abrasion resistance.
