OF the current Adirondack iron mine development, the Benson Mines operation of the Tones and Laughlin Ore Co. (Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. wholly owned subsidiary) is the last to go into operation. Following an active construction program in 1943, the mine. concentrator and sintering plant were scheduled to enter production in the fall. This description therefore cannot include any operating data, and details of equipment and flowsheet have not as yet been released.

CHUQUICAMATA, located in northern Chile in the Province of Antofagasta, is on the western slope of the Andes at an elevation of 9500 ft. Because of its position on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert, the climate is extremely arid with practically no precipitation, either rain or snow. All primary blasting in the open-pit mine at Chuquicamata is done by the churn drill, blasthole method. Since 1915; when the first tonnages of importance were removed from the open pit, there have been many changes in the blasting practice, but no clear-cut rules of method and procedure have been devised for application to the mine as a whole. One general fact stands out: both the ore and waste rock at Chuquicamata are difficult to break satisfactorily for the most efficient operation of power shovels. Numerous experiments have been made in an effort to improve the breakage and thereby increase the shovel efficiency. Holes of different diameter have been drilled, the length of toe and spacing of holes have been varied, and several types of explosives have been used. Early blasting was done by the tunnel method. The banks were high, generally 30 m, requiring the use of large charges of black powder, detonated by electric blasting caps: Large tonnages were broken at comparatively low cost, but the method left such a large proportion of oversize material for secondary blasting that satisfactory shovel operation was practically impossible: Railroad-type steam and electric shovels then in service proved unequal to the task of efficiently handling the large proportion of oversize material produced. The clean-up of high banks proved to be dangerous and expensive as large quantities of explosive were consumed in dressing these banks, and from time to time the shovels were damaged by rock slides. As early as 1923 the high benches were divided, and a standard height of 12 m was selected for the development of new benches. The recently acquired Bucyrus-Erie 550-B shovel, with its greater radius of operation compared to the Bucyrus-Erie 320-B formerly used for bench development, allowed the bench height to be increased to 16 m. Churn drill, blasthole shooting proved to be successful, and tunnel blasts were limited to certain locations where development existed or natural ground conditions made the method more attractive than the use of churn-drill holes. Liquid oxygen explosive and black powder were used along with dynamite of various grades in blasthole loading up to early 1937. Liquid oxygen and black powder were discontinued because they were more difficult to handle due to their sensitivity to fire or sparks in the extremely dry climate. At present ammonium nitrate dynamite is favored because of its superior handling qualities and its adaptability to the dry condition found in 90 pct of the mine. In wet holes, which are found only in the lowest bench of the pit and account for the remaining 10 pct of the ground to be broken, Nitramon in 8x24-in. cans, or ammonium nitrate dynamite packed in 8x24-in. paper cartridges, is being used. This latter explosive, which is protected by a special antiwetting agent that makes the cartridges resistant to water for about 24 hr, currently is considered the best available for the work and is preferred over Nitramon. Early churn drill hole shots detonated' by electric blasting caps, one in each hole, gave trouble because of misfires caused by the improper balance of resistance in the electrical circuits. Primarily, it was of vital importance to effect an absolute balance of resistance in these circuits, the undertaking and completion of which invariably caused delays in the shooting schedule. Misfires resulting from the improper balance of electrical circuits, or from any other cause, were extremely hazardous, since holes had to be unloaded or fired by the insertion of another detonator. The advent of cordeau, later followed by primacord, corrected this particular difficulty and therefore reduced the possibility of missed holes. After much experimentation, the blasting practice evolved into single row, multihole shots, with the holes spaced 4.5 to 5 m center to center in a row 7.5 to 8 m back from the toe. Such shots were fired from either end .by electric blasting caps attached to the main trunk lines of cordeau or primacord. The detonating speed of cordeau or primacord gave the practical effect of firing all holes instantaneously. Double row and multirow blasts, fired instantaneously with cordeau or primacord, proved to be unsatisfactory in the type of rock found at Chuquica-

FREQUENTLY in using a thermo-electric pyrometer for measuring the temperature of a furnace, a hole is drilled at the back or side of the furnace, through which is introduced the tube containing the thermo-couple. At times the couple is left almost where it drops, for the reason that it soon becomes too hot to be handled easily, and the space at the back or side of the furnace may be so small and uncomfortably hot that an easy and accurate adjustment is nearly impossible. In order to overcome this clumsy and unscientific method of using the thermo-electric pyrometer, I designed an adjustable stand, to hold the clay or quartz tube unclosing the platinum and plati-num-rhodium leads that constitute the couple of the Le Chatelier thermo-electric pyrometer. This stand also allows an easy and rapid adjustment of position to varying heights and angles, as may be desired for special reading. This stand is illustrated in Fig. 1. The couple in the tube might be of better service if the tube were held a little higher above the charge in a roasting-dish, changing the height and angle if desired. The stand, made of 1.5-in, water-pipe and mounted on casters, is heavy enough so it cannot be tipped over easily. It is adjusted to any position, and has a universal clamp which holds the clay or quartz protecting-tube. To avoid disturbing the wires of the couple at the cold junction each time the tube is moved, the cooling-bottle sets in a wire basket so placed that it moves forward or back with the couple. The purpose of this paper is to convince the managers of silvermills that their customary reports in regard to the percentage of silver saved are far from the truth. It may be unpleasant for them to have the proofs of this fact brought before the public, and for this rezson the author refrains from giving the names of the mines and mills from which the statistics here recorded were obtained. It may be asked: What is gained by informing the stockholders of our silver-mines that they receive incorrect reports? Will this increase their dividends or lessen their assessments? In the first place, it is always better to publish honest facts than fiction. In the second place, many superintendents believe in the correctness of their reports, and have no idea how much they deceive themselves. Finally, the knowledge that hitherto unexpected losses of silver take place may lead to the adoption of methods by which these losses are greatly reduced. These remarks refer also to smelting-works. The present paper, however, is concerned exclusively with amalgamation and lixiviation. The first and most important error is found in the inaccuracy of the commercial assay; the second in the incorrect sampling of tailings in amalgamation. Further, mills not doing custom-work, but reducing exclusively ores from mines to which the mills belong, are in the habit of weighing the ore only approximately and without making moisture-tests. Thus, a correct basis for calculating the actual percentage of silver extracted is lacking. The superintendent, then, finds it convenient to report the apparent extraction, i.e., the extraction indicated by comparing the value of the roasted ore, minus soluble salts, with the value of the tailings. How many errors are thereby committed it is not necessary to point out.

A diffusion measurement technique based on a shear cell comprised of only two segments is described. The diffusion boundary value problem for the finite capillary geometry is solved in general for any arbitrary initial concentration profile and is subsequently specialized for the modified shear cell problem. Effects of convection and mixing at the shear interface were found to be negligible. Mercury self-diffusion coefficients were determined from -25° to 252°C. These data are in good agreement with those found by Meyer. ALTHOUGH diffusion in liquid metals has been of interest for over two centuries, the need for measurement techniques of improved accuracy and precision has become increasingly apparent as additional data have been obtained and theory has become more refined. These conditions reflect the experimental difficulties inherent in liquid diffusion measurements, in which transport by other processes, such as convection, tends to mask the diffusive transport. Frequently the disagreement between several theoretical predictions is less than that found between different sets of data obtained for a system. Moreover, as has been shown by Nachtrieb,1 diffusion data are needed over much larger temperature ranges if the functional dependence on temperature is to be known. Thus, improved techniques must be devised if experimental data are to augment fundamental understanding of the liquid state and to meet technological needs. The available techniques have been discussed elsewhere.' Of these, only the capillary-reservoir, long capillary, and shear cell techniques will be discussed briefly in terms of experimental advantages and disadvantages. These methods served to establish design criteria for the modified shear cell described here. The capillary-reservoir technique of Anderson and saddington3 has been the most widely used method in recent years. The method offers experimental simplicity relative to other methods and has been employed for high-temperature measurements. Moreover, the mathematical relationship between the measured concentration ratio and the diffusion coefficient is such that smaller values of the ratio are achieved for a specified diffusion time relative to other methods. The amplified errors between the concentration ratio and the calculated diffusion coefficient are diminished at lower values of the ratio.' The method also permits multiple determination by the simultaneous use of several capillaries. Disadvantages of the capillary-reservoir method are primarily associated with the hydrodynamic ef- fects of convection and of placing the capillary in the reservoir. These effects are most pronounced in the region near the open end of the capillary and produce an ill-defined boundary condition between the capillary and the reservoir. Such effects are not amenable to experimental or mathematical correction2 (although this has been suggested4). The long-capillary method of Careri, Paoletti, et al.5-10 involves filling one half of a small capillary tube of 150 to 200 mm total length with material of one composition or radioactivity and the other half with the second part of the diffusion couple. This arrangement eliminates the adverse hydrodynamic effects associated with the capillary-reservoir technique; however, certain other experimental difficulties are encountered in this method. The more significant of these difficulties involve the melting, expansion, contraction, and solidification of the diffusion system. The dependence in some cases of the diffusion coefficient on the capillary diameter noted by Careri et a1.7 (termed the "wall effect") has been alternatively explained by Nachtriebl as a convection effect during solidification. In mutual diffusion measurements, the convection problems associated with melting and solidification are increased because of the differences in melting points and in expansion coefficients between the halves of the diffusion couple. However, the errors caused by convection effects within this method are usually less than those in the capillary-reservoir method. Furthermore, the concentration profile needed to determine concentration-dependent diffusion coefficients by the Boltzmann-Matano analysis can be obtained from this method. Of the previous attempts to use shear cells, only the cell used by Nachtrieb and Petit11,12 appears to have yielded good data. They reduced the mechanical complexity of the conventional shear cell by using a cell comprised of only four segments. Three of these segments were filled with ordinary mercury and the fourth with radioisotopic mercury in their determination of mercury self-diffusion coefficients. The average concentration (radioactivity) was determined in each segment following a period of isothermal diffusion. These concentration values were fitted to concentration profiles obtained from the Stefan-Kawalki tables, and the diffusion coefficients were evaluated. Thus, although the number of cell segments is reduced in their method, some information about the concentration profile can be obtained in terms of the Stefan-Kawalki analysis. Moreover, their cell is suitable for measurement of diffusion coefficients at elevated pressure, as they successfully demonstrated with mercury. Consideration of the design and experimental features of the methods discussed above suggested several criteria for the new cell: 1) a ''total" capillary system, as opposed to a capillary-reservoir system, should reduce adverse convection effects; 2) such a capillary system should avoid the problems en-

IT is found when floating oxidized lead ores by sulphidization, that the presence of calcium salts in the water is usually detrimental and lowers the recovery. This effect is particularly marked in dry countries such as North Africa, where the waters often carry large amounts of calcium sulphate and where the ore may even contain gypsum. Whereas in their absence cerussite is quickly stained brown and then .black by sodium sulphide, in their presence the mineral remains very light in color. A similar- effect is produced when barium sulphide is used as a sulphidizing agent instead of sodium- sulphide. Magnesium salts have little or no effect and even tend to reduce the detrimental effect of calcium salts. A study of this phenomenon indicates that it is due to the precipitation of calcium or barium carbonate in contact ,with the mineral simultaneously with the formation of lead sulphide.

Specimens of a hydrided Mg-0.5 Zr alloy were strained in tension at 500°C and constant rates of 2 x10-3 5 x 10-3, and 2 X 10" min-1. Hydride-denuded zones formed at grain boundaries normal to the tensile-stress direction as a result of magnesium transport during difusional flow. The width of the zones could be measured and the measurement used for calculating the diffusional component of the imposed tensile strain. The strain from diffusional flow was found to increase with imposed strain at a diminishing rate, tending to saturate at approximately 12 pct. Strain rate sensitivity of flow stress was low. The apparent non Newtonian character of the diffusional flow is attributed to a non Newtonian process acting in parallel with it which could be boundary shear. Fracture grows out of voids that form in the denuded zones. DEFORMATION of a grain by diffusion of atoms from boundaries stressed in compression to boundaries stressed in tension is Newtonian viscous,1-3 and evidence has accumulated in recent years that such a process may be responsible for the high strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress of super-plastic alloys.4"7 One piece of evidence is that experimental stress: strain-rate relationships can be quantitatively explained.5-7 There is also metallo-graphic evidence of diffusional flow in superplas-ticity, but in a limited amount. The formation of striated bands on the surface of superplastically deformed specimens has been attributed to diffusional flow.5"7 The basis of that attribution came from experiments on a coarse-grained, nonsuperplastic and hydrided Mg-½ wt pct Zr alloy which formed hydride-denuded, light etching zones at tension-stressed boundaries when strained in tension at 270?C.6 The origin of these zones had already been traced to the diffusional flow of magnesium atoms to the boundaries.' The particular observations in the more recent work were of striated-band formation on the surface and denuded-zone formation internally, with both the bands and zones having the same width and appearing at tension-stressed boundaries. It was argued that the bands were a surface manifestation of the zones and hence of diffusional flow. Of course in superplastic alloys which do not contain internal metallographic "markers", the surface bands can be the only metallographic indication. In the present work, denuded-zone formation was utilized, as it has been by others,9-11 to extend the observations of diffusional flow and to measure the strain, ed, resulting from it. Grain size had to be large to measure ed with accuracy. The grain size chosen for this study was -30 , and with that a strain of 10 pct from diffusional flow produces a denuded zone only 3 µ in width. The large grain size naturally precludes superplasticity. The observations of diffusional flow were complemented by determining the strain from the other operative deformation modes: slip, e,, and grain boundary shear, egb. An incremental specimen extension is the sum of increments from slip, and grain boundary shear as well as diffusional flow. Division by a common length is required to convert to strain. If this length is taken as the initial specimen length, then imposed engineering strain, e, is given in terms of the component engineering strains by e = ed + es + egb [1] Stress:strain-rate relationships are determined by the way in which this "strain balance" is made up. EXPERIMENTAL Material. Zirconium hydride markers were introduced into the Mg-0.5Zr alloy by annealing in hydrogen at 450°C for 30 min. The hydride concentration was particularly high at zirconium rich stringers, which was fortunate in that the transverse boundaries at which denuded zones form lie perpendicular to the stringers. Grain size after annealing was 30 µ. Photomicrographs of unstrained and strained material are shown in Fig. 1. Procedure. Specimens were strained in tension with an Instron machine at crosshead velocities of either 2 x 10"3, 5 x X or 1 x 10-2 in. min-'. Specimen length and diameter were 1.0 and 0.2 in., respectively, so that initial strain rates in tests at constant crosshead speed were 2 x 10"3, 5 x X and 1 X l0-2 min-1. Tests were made at 500°C which is a compromise temperature at which diffusional flow is still measurable but grain growth is not active enough to interfere with metallographic measurements. The tests were made in a hydrogen atmosphere. Strain Balance. An equation additional to [I] is eg = ed + es [2] where eg is strain measured from grain elongation. Measurement was made of ed, eg, and, of course, e, which enabled all the strains in Eq. [I] to be determined. For this purpose, strained specimens were sectioned longitudinally, polished, and etched. The strain from diffusional flow, ed, was computed by measuring on photomicrographs the width in the tensile direction of denuded zones at either end of a grain XI, X2, adding them, and dividing by twice the initial longitudinal grain dimension L0, Fig. 2. Reported values are the results of measurements on seventy randomly selected grains; 95 pct confidence limits on ed were +1.5 pct strain. In all, 127 producing oil wells, 8 producing gas wells and 212 dry holes were drilled during 1936 in the Central Texas area; 76 wells in Bexar County, 62 in Caldwell County, 44 in Guadalupe County, 22 in Williamson County, 20 in Navarro County and 20 in Frio County. Less than 20 were drilled in each of the other counties and none at all in Ellis, Hill, Bosque, Coryell, Lampasas, Burnet, Llano, Kennedy, Mason, Real, Kinney and Uvalde Counties. The Pearsall-Austin chalk field in Frio County and the Zoboroski field in Guadalupe County were the only new discoveries and there were no important extensions to old fields. In this report Corsicana, Mildred (Elm Ridge), Angus-Edens-Hodge, Burke, and Rice-Oil Ridge, all shallow Navarro County stripper fields, are grouped together under the name of Corsicana. This grouping follows that of the Railroad Commission of Texas, thus facilitating the gathering of production data. A map showing the location of the oil and gas fields in the Central Texas Area was published in Volume 114 of the A.I.M.E. TranBactions, page 380. New Fields Pearsall-Austin Chalk.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation completed 13 Austin chalk wells during 1936 on the large Amerada-Rycade block in Frio County. Other companies drilled two dry holes to the Austin chalk in this vicinity. Not enough wells were drilled to give control of the structure but it appears to be a nose plunging in a west-southwest direction. A second deep test is being drilled in the Pearsall area and at this writing has cemented off a show of oil and gas in the Edwards limestone. The Humble Oil and Refining Co. is building a 6-in. pipe line from Lytle, Tex., to serve the Pearsall field. Zoboroski.—Actual discovery of the Zoboroski field was made by W. J. Walton et al. in 1931. The discovery well, Anton Zoboroski No. 1, was a small producer making but from 3 to 5 bbl. per day, which was used locally for fuel oil. DURING the past two or three years I have seen statements regarding the first discovery of fullers' earth in this country that seem to require correction or modification. One appears again in the Mineral Resources of the United States for 1909, part II., p. 738, where it is said that ? fullers' earth was first discovered in the United States at Quincy, Fla., in 1893." In this connection the following bit of unpublished history concerning fullers' earth in the State of Arkansas is worthy of attention. In April, 1891, when I was State Geologist of Arkansas, a Swede named John Olsen, formerly a copper-miner in Michigan, but then living south of Little Rock, brought me a sample of what he thought was fullers' earth. He reported that it was from near the town of Alexander, the locality being 1 S. 13 W., section 8, SW. quarter of the SE. quarter. My chemist, Dr. R. N. The dissolution of nickel, copper, and cobalt from five different samples of well-characterized deep sea manganese nodules was measured as a function of temperature, pH, leaching time, and particle size. Nickel, copper, and cobalt extraction each respond to these variables in a different manner. The results of this investigation indicate that copper and nickel can be selectively dissolved from iron and manganese at moderately low pH, provided the reaction is given sufficient time. A high dissolution of cobalt with dilute sulfuric acid can only be achieved from nodules that have a low iron content (<5%). The most probable rate-controlling step for copper and cobalt dissolution is diffusion through the pores of the nodules, and for nickel dissolution chemical reaction appears to be rate-controlling.

THE American copper mining industry is threatened with disintegration and destruction. This threat is not one which may only materialize in the distant future. The destruction has already commenced. At present, many domestic mines have already closed down. .Others are operating on a greatly curtailed basis. Those operating are doing so only at tremendous loss-because the selling price of copper is below the cost of production and rapidly diminishing financial resources and credit clearly forecast the early suspension of operations in most of the industry. Unemployment in the mining districts is increasing by leaps and bounds. While this condition is due in some measure to the present unsatisfactory state of business in general, the copper industry, unlike other lines of business, sees no possibility of recovery without definite aid. The fundamental, underlying cause of present conditions in the American copper mining industry is the unprecedented rise in foreign production, and the basic change which has taken place in the world copper industry in the last three years. The American industry had begun to feel this change early in 1929 long before the general collapse of business in the fall of that year. While the distress in the industry is undoubtedly aggravated by the present economic depression, it nevertheless would have arrived and. have been present at this time, regardless of general business conditions.

CHANGES in circuits are often made in milling operations. At the same time that these changes are being evaluated the ores are changing. Even from the same mine, the ore is usually variable as to amount and type of mineral content, degree of association of valuable and gangue minerals, amount and types of soluble salts, hardness, etc. The question then arises whether any small differences in results, after changes have been made in the various circuits, are really due to these changes or whether the variability of the ore can account for those differences. Statistical evaluation provides one method of answering the question that arises so often in beneficiation studies: Did changed results come about because of changed process, or did ore variation cause the change? In this case, data were available for statistical analysis from an operating period of 42 months, representing treatment of approximately 1 million tons of ore. During this period there had been two flowsheet changes: 1) regrind of the zinc circuit middlings was introduced, and 2) alcohol- pine oil frother mixture was substituted for cresylic acid-pine oil frother mixture. Findings are in Table I.

THE early methods of mining anthracite in the steep pitching Mammoth bed consisted in driving breasts up the pitch from the gangways and airways driven in the bed along the strike (Plate 2, Fig. 1). Breasts are simply rooms driven up the pitch the full thickness of the bed (Plate 2, Fig. 2), having a width of from 18 to 30 ft., and a manway or traveling way on one or both sides. (For detail of breast method see Whildin, Trans., vol. 50, p. 704). Many difficulties were encountered, and the maintenance cost of the timbered gangways was so great as to be practically prohibitive. To reduce this .expense, the gangways were driven in the thin Skidmore bed underlying the Mammoth, and the coal mined through rock holes. (Plate 2, Fig. 2;-A.) It was found that after the breasts were driven up 80 to 100 ft., the coal almost invariably rushed or "ran away," making good ventilation almost impossible and the extraction of coal from the upper portion of the lift very difficult. The economic length of a lift is from 200 to 250 ft., and the percentage of extraction by the old method above mentioned was often under 50 per cent., while the coal recovered was so badly broken up as to reduce materially the percentage of large sizes.
