In spite of the artificial supports which are provided to reinforce the mine roof and prevent failures, roof falls continue to occur very frequently in the mines due to the very unpredictable geological conditions and the dynamic nature of the mining operations. In fact, roof fall is still one of the largest contributor to coal mine fatalities. The design of a roof support plan is often based on arbitrary criterions due to the unpredictable behaviour of the rocks under the mining conditions. The failure of a mine roof which ultimately results in a roof fall and contribute to mine hazards, is caused following a gradual degradation in its physical conditions. A mine roof monitoring system capable of monitoring the rate of deterioration of a mine roof on a continuous basis has been developed and tested in an operating coal mine. IN order to investigate the possibility of a spontaneous low-temperature transformation, resistivity measurements were made on a sample of eutectoid beryllium- copper. A cast specimen of 5.965 pct Be, 94.035 pct Cu was homogenized at 650°C for 22 hr, furnace cooled to 550°C, and held for 2 hr to allow the 0 - a ß-a+? reaction to proceed. Chip formation in rock under a line load and in front of a drag bit cutter is numerically investigated. Analysis is accomplished by a special purpose interactive graphics finite element code, SICRAP, written for the simulation of mixed mode crack propagation under 1inear elastic fracture mechanics assumptions. The first study provides some interesting qualitative results, and in the second study, correlation with experimental tests on chip formation by drag bit cutter in Berea sandstone is found to be very satisfactory. This indicates that elastic analysis, coupled with fracture mechanics, is capable of modeling rock cutting.

UNITED States Steel Co.'s Tennessee Coal & Iron Div. Wenonah mines present definite materials handling problems arising from the natural features of the operation. Trackless equipment went a long way toward supplying the answers-but at the same time gave birth to several new posers. Machines-trackless or otherwise-require maintenance and Wenonah's experience may do much to add to the body of information already available on this type of equipment. Let's look at the mines themselves. Ore is of sedimentary origin, extending over an area of several square miles. A thickness from 8 to 14 ft is mined. Bed dip varies from the horizontal to 20 pct in local rolls. Practice is to mine across the dip at 14 pct or less. A parting forms a smooth footwall in some of the mines while in others the footwall must be blasted smooth. Ore weighs 215 lb per cu ft in place and is extremely abrasive.

THE pressure distribution in a producing oil or gas reservoir has been obtained mathematically in a limited number of special cases where the boundary of the reservoirs are simple geometric figures with the wells conveniently located within them. Using some of the previous work as a basis, it can be proved that a number of additional problems of pressure distribution can be solved by use of soap film. This method is particu-larly applicable to a reservoir drained by a number of wells, or to a reservoir of irregular shape, or to both. Since this method obtains the pressure distribution, it also establishes the drainage boundaries of the wells. This paper derives the analogy between the equation representing the pressure distribution in a reservoir and the equation of the deflected membrane. It also describes the apparatus and the method of operation. The experimental method is employed to solve a problem whose mathe-matical solution is known and the results compared. These are found to be in good agreement. The method is applicable to any homogeneous liquid, compressible or incompressible, or to a gas, flowing in a reservoir of uniform thickness, permeability and porosity. The flow state may be either the steady state or the transient state wherein the density or pressure of the fluid in the reservoir declines at a constant rate.

The traces of fossils herein described were discovered in or upon piles or heaps of iron-ores upon the docks at Erie, Pa. The author has worked among these ore-piles since 1890, when his attention was first directed to what looked like organic remains upon certain specimens collected. All the specimens described and figured herein were found by him, and, as no ironore is used at Erie, and no other iron-ores, save those of the Lake Superior region, find their way to the stock-piles at this place, there can be no question but that the specimens in question are genuine ore transported from that region over the great lakes, and cannot have been brought in from other ironore regions. The author has reason to think that no fossil remains have been reported hitherto as occurring in the iron-ores of the Lake Superior region, and he believes that these specimens, however imperfect, rank among the oldest forms of which man has any knowledge. The illustrations are engraved from photographs of drawings. The specimens themselves have not been photographed, because their condition would have prevented bringing out, by that process of reproduction, all the markings as clearly as is necessary, and would have rendered the specimens otherwise less distinct by reason of the blotchy character of their colors, the presence of cracks, or of marks more or less in contact with those of the organisms. In drawing these remains, therefore, I left out everything upon the specimens of ore that did not seem to belong in any way or contribute to their value as illustrations of the fossils. According to information obtained from the dock superintendent at Erie, Pa., the majority of these specimens came from the Chapin mine, Iron Mountain, Menominee range, Mich. The Library of the above-named Societies is open frond 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated front sources of information. To these the Library, through Its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining neaps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should he made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be, sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

After outlining the growth of industrial research, the paper discusses one successful method for organizing and financing group research programs. A systematic procedure is advocated by which engineers and scientists can bring to management practical plans for cooperative research and development programs.

The mechanism, of the decrease in transition temperature of Nb3Sn was studied. Presintered Nb3Sn powder compacts were heated in a dynamic vacuum at elevated temperatures. Loss of tin resulted from these heat treatments and transition temperature as a function of tin loss was discontinuous at a critical value of tin loss. In general, decreases in transition temperature were correlated with deviations from AS a class, the A15 structure-type (also known as Cr3O or ß W) compounds have the highest superconducting transition temperatures.' In this class are stoichiometry and presence of vacancies in niobium sites. The effect of vacancy distribution on the physical properties of Nh3Sn is considered. It is concluded that the close-packed atomic A chain in the A3B A15 structure must be preserved both in coutinuity and direction if good superconducting properties are to he obtained. tempting to associate these high transition temperatures with the most unique crystallographic feature of the A3B structure: the three close-packed, orthogonal chains of A atoms.'0"' There are at least three principal mechanisms by which the perfection of these "A-atom chains" could be interrupted: changing stoichiometry, inducing disorder, or introducing vacancies. An attempt has been made to explain the behavior of a pinched sluice in terms of the established theories of fluid mechanics and mineral processing. A method has been developed to calculate the underflow discharge by assuming a logarithmic velocity distribution and free gravity fall through the discharge slot. The concentration profile of solids over the depth of flow has been shown to comply with Bagnold's theory of dispersive shear, rather than turbulent sediment transfer. Even although the results can be explained qualitatively by the Bagnold theory, their complete quantitative analysis will not be possible until more work is done. Consequently, an empirical equation has been developed to predict underflow pulp densities. It has been shown that the process of the segregation of the heavier mineral beneath the lighter can be described by a first order law. From the results obtained, a computer model of the pinched sluice has been developed. This predicts the underflow grade, pulp density and flow rate in terms of the feed and operating conditions. The model can also be used to determine the effect of a change in operating conditions, and for the optimization of rougher, cleaner, and scavenger circuits.

Many attempts have been made to eliminate most of the crushing plant and all the grinding plant in the process of ore beneficiation by substituting a combined crushing and grinding unit which could take coarsely crushed ore and reduce it to a fine size in one unit. This unit normally would have no other grinding media than the ore itself. This is true autogenous grinding, as we understand it today, and should be clearly distinguished from pebble mill grinding, where pebbles are substituted for steel balls to grind a ball mill size feed. To compete in efficiency with normal methods of crushing and grinding, the autogenous mill must use less labor and steel to produce an equivalent product at equal or lower power consumption. In general terms, a unit to perform these functions must have means to crush the ore to fine sizes and to then further reduce the crushed pieces by grinding. In other words, to do efficient autogenous grinding, there must be a proper balance established between crushing and grinding rates. There is not much point in crushing at too fast a rate if the grinding means are not present to reduce the small particles to the required product size. The crushing means used in an autogenous mill are impact forces of two kinds, namely, (1) the rock travelling at high speeds striking the shell, and (2) the lifters travelling at high speeds striking the rock. Grinding is probably effected in a manner equivalent to pebble milling.

RAPID colorimetric estimation of the amount of transparent minerals has been applied success- fully to instream mill products at the cryolite flotation plant of the Pennsylvania Salt Mfg. Co., Natrona, Pa. Apparatus used was a Bausch & Lomb monochromatic colorimeter. The optical assembly of the colorimeter, shown in Fig. 1, passes light from a 6-v, 32-cp, prefocus incandescent lamp through two condensing lenses, a heat-absorbing filter, an aperture-control diaphragm, an interference filter, and a sample container. The light finally strikes a barrier-layer photocell and the output current of the photocell is measured by a galvanometer. The engraved index line of the collective lens, located between the lamp and the galvanometer, is imaged upon the transmission scale of the colorimeter by the galvanometer mirror. Reflected light from the galvanometer mirror, the position of which is determined by the output current of the photocell, enables reading of percent transmission throughout the mineral sample being tested. The colorimeter, Fig. 1, was standardized as follows: 1-The colorimeter was connected to a Sola constant voltage transformer, A, of 6-v output operated from a 110-v ac supply. 2-Turning the toggle switch, C, illuminated the transmission scale, B, and the control knob, D, was adjusted with a blank in the optical system until the hairline on the scale read zero. 3-A No. 430 interference filter, E, was inserted into the filter channel, F. &--A test tube, G, containing 7 cc of distilled water was pressed into the sample space, H, and the fine adjustment knob,

THE coal-beds of Canyon City are situated six miles below the town, upon the Arkansas River. At this point the Rocky Mountains have thrown out from their main ridge two spurs. The one to the north, containing Pike's Peak and Cheyenne Mountain, is known as part of the "Rim Range;" the one to the west and south is known as the "Greenhorn Range." Against these syenitic mountains, the later rocks are piled and uplifted ; at right angles to the direction of this main uplift is the axis of a lesser plication. On the north, west, and south, the pitch is steep, gradually flattening as it approaches the centre of the basin and rising again to the east at a pitch of about 5", thus forming a perfect basin, the centre of which is only three miles east of the base of the Greenhorn Range.

A computer model for the leaching of oxide copper heaps is developed and verified in laboratory tests. The model can be used to scale-up laboratory test data and to simulate the results of various operating philosophies on heap leaching. The model is applicable to leaching processes where the rate of leaching is controlled by a deficiency of reactant or diffusion of a reactant through the leached rock. Several examples are presented showing the sensitivity of the recovery vs. time curve to the variables in leaching.
