General Aurelio Blanquet,* the best known of living Mexican soldiers, formerly the trusted friend of Porfirio Diaz and organizer of the old Federal Guard of Mexico City, who as a sergeant commanded the squad that executed sentence on Emperor Maximilian, and. more recently was Minister of War in the Cabinet of Victoriano Huerta, landed in Mexico early in April and joined the forces of Felix Diaz. His landing in the state of Vera Cruz, it was stated, was for the definite purpose of aiding the movement now under way to overthrow Venustiano Carranza and to place in power a government that will be "pro-Ally" in its sympathies and will promulgate and enforce laws that will guarantee the rights of life and property in Mexico. The New York Tinges says of the revolution editorially: "Whatever may be the success of General Aurelio Blanquet's attempt to overthrow the Carranza Government in Mexico, admiration cannot be withheld from the General's publicity manager. No enterprise awning at the overthrow of a Government ever had more favorable and widespread advertising. Felix Diaz, whom Blanquet is going to reinforce, supersede, or overthrow, as the case may be-Mexican precedent in these matters offers opportunity for considerable speculation-has been conducting his revolution, at the old stand for some time, but without much success. But, says General Blanquet's representative, the landing of Blanquet will send a thrill to the heart of every true republican.' Meanwhile a biographical booklet is published, adorned with photo¬graphs illustrating the General's record, including such varied matters as the General in favor, receiving a decoration from Victoriano Huerta, and the General in exile, feeding the birds in Central Park."

A new concept involving the use of a crawler-mounted slurrifier for open-pit ore mining and overburden removal is dealt with. The design and application are discussed. Based on field experience, the area and type of operation where this machine would be effective is indicated. The slurrifier is also compared with draglines, shovels, and bucket wheel excavators. A number of the design concepts, as well as the mechanical and operational parameters, are discussed.

THE use of pyrophoric alloys in ignition devices dates back more than fifty years to a German patent granted to Carl Auer von Welsbach in 1903.' This patent named a composition essentially the same as that used in most present-day cigarette lighter "flints:" 70 pct mischmetal, 30 pct Fe, referred to here as "Auer alloy." Among the few current exceptions to this composition are those "flints" based on titanium or zirconium. The rare-earth metals of which mischmetal is composed are so similar chemically and physically remarkable similarity in their alloying behaviors would be expected. Comparison of the binary phase diagrams2 of these elements with nonrare-earth metals shows that this is true to a striking degree, so much so, in fact, that it appears that a mixture of these elements may be treated as a single component of alloys without fear of serious error. In considering alloys containing mischmetal, therefore, the mixture of rare-earth elements will be referred to merely as "cerium," the predominant element in mischmetal. In polishing cerium alloys for metallographic examination, it was soon discovered that aqueous polishing media were highly corrosive. Free cerium in the alloys acts similarly to calcium (though not quite so rapidly) in evolving bubbles of hydrogen at the metal-water interface; thus, special metallographic techniques are required. THE use of diamonds upon a large scale in drilling rocks, and the substitution to a certain degree of rotary diamond drills for the ordinary steel percussion drills, marks a new era in the art of mining. Since the invention by Leschot of the diamond drill, it has steadily advanced in its utility and range of application, and in the appreciation of miners and engineers. I t must be claimed as one of the many gifts of science to the arts ; and it is, in particular, one of the fruits of the scientific education given at the Ecole Centrale, at Paris. Members are all, doubtless, more or less familiar with the construction of the drill and of the machinery by which it is applied in boring. I t is, therefore, my present purpose only to direct your attention to some recent marked improvements, made by the American Diamond Drill Company, by which the economy and efficiency of the machines have been increased. Form of Bit.-The annular or ring form of the drill-head or bit was, I believe, the earliest; and it is still in use, without essential modification, wherever it is desired to obtain a sample " core" or specimen of the rock traversed. But for mere drilling, regardless ~f the preservation of a test-core, a solid-head bit is preferred, except for very large holes. Until recently, these solid-head bits were made with a pointed cutting face shaped like an obtuse cone. The views-showed the various forms of aerial tramways and three' unique installations, one carrying 285 tons of coal an hour, undoubtedly the maximum quantity transported by any tramway up to this time. Simple, specific rules for achieving slope stability in open-pit mines are impossible to devise. Each pit has a different mining program and a different set of environmental conditions, and its final slope design must be based on an individual evaluation of the actual site. The overall philosophy of pit stability, however, is tending towards a limit design concept. Since slope angle has a great influence on the economics of most open-pit mines, efforts are being made to reduce the theoretical factor of safety for slope stability to very near 1.0. (Factor of safety is here defined as shear strength/shear stress on the most probable plane of failure.) Actually, where detailed, statistically significant testing has been done and a comprehensive ground control program is being instituted to warn of movement at an early stage, safety factors as low as 1.1 or 1.2 may be justified. The cost of the necessary procedures, however, is high. There are many factors that influence stability, but this article will be confined to three-rock structure, groundwater, and blasting.

(written discussion 11).-7--In the development of Mr. Traer's method for the low-temperature coking of Illinois coals, after the principles laid clown by Prof. Parr, it was soon demon-strated that, in order to yield a product of uniform volatile content, the coal must be coked in thin layers, and consequently must be handled in comparatively small volumes. This means, in the first place, that great care must he observed in the design of the coking chambers to prevent the loss of the products of distillation, and, in the-second place, that labor-saving devices must be utilized to the greatest possible extent in order to reduce the cost of handling.

INTRODUCTION The production of fines is an unwanted side-effect in most crystallization processes. The definition of “fines" is relative to the size of the desired product and varies from <30 mesh for coarse KC1 fertilizers to subsieve organic material produced by salting-out pro- cesses. Sometimes a well-developed fines distribution is necessary in the production of large crystals, e.g. the fines removal stream from a potash crystallizer. The production of fines is usually not desired in a crystallization separation step. However, product purity can either improve or degenerate with a decrease in crystal size depending on the relative importance of product washing vs mother liquor occlusions in determining over-all purity. Typically, both washing efficiency and mother liquor occlusions decrease with decreasing particle size. Fine crystal distributions have historically been difficult to measure and categorize; however this situation is changing rapidly with the use of electronic particle counters of the electrical zone- sensing or light scattering type. In fact, fine-crystal measurement is perhaps the key to better understanding and control of coarse- crystal crystallization processes. The fine-crystal distribution carries much useful information from which nucleation and growth rates can be inferred. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss a few crystallization processes in which production and/or measurement of fines is important and to categorize the process conditions which yield a fine- crystal product.

A decision was made by the management of International Salt Co. in 1960 to eliminate all waste products which were entering the waters of Lake Seneca. This was to be accomplished by the injection of waste slurries into an abandoned brine cavity. The effluent from the cavity was to be treated and used for the manufacture of salt or disposed by deep well injection into the Cherry Valley limestone. After several years of research and design, a construction permit was granted by the state of New York; the injection, recovery, and disposal wells were constructed and after a public hearing an operational permit was issued. A summary of the operational results of the system is given.

An equation is derived for the rote of reaction of a sphere of metal oxide in a restricted enclosure through which a reducing gas is flowing. The equation takes into consideration the reaction rate coefficient, transport through the gas and through the porous shell of reduced oxide, the rate of gas flow, THIS paper describes a mathematical study of the chemical and physical processes that determine the rate of reduction of solid metal oxide with a reducing gas. The study was a part of a theoretical study leading to the development of a mathematical model for the simulation of the thermochemical behavior of the iron blast furnace. An essential feature of such and the volume of- space surrounding the sphere available for gas flow. The equation is applied to experimental data on vote of reduction of iron oxide in hydrogen. The equation serves as a model for predicting the course of reduction of a particle of. metal oxide in a shaft furnace. a model is an adequate mathematical relationship defining the rate of reaction in terms of all the important chemical and physical phenomena that affect the rate of reaction. This includes not only the reaction rate coefficients, equilibrium ratios, gas composition, and temperature, but also the relevant physical properties of the oxide, rate of gas flow, and relative volumes occupied by gas and solid. Although determining and controlling specific gravity of operating medium in a heavy-media plant manually presents no problem, there are advantages to automatic recording and control. The two installations discussed employ the usual method of measurement. Pneumatic control with band control and reset features is used to regulate dilution water and hence specific gravity. Difficulties have been mechanical in nature and associated with obtaining a proper sample and maintaining tight air connections in bubble-tube piping.

THE solid solubility of cementite in a-iron has been investigated a number of times and there is now general agreement on the solubility of about 0.018 wt pct at the eutectoid temperature, 720°C. With decreasing temperature, the solubility falls off so rapidly and to such a low value that no data obtained by standard metallurgical methods are available below 500°C. Using a new technique, however, Dijkstral has obtained apparently accurate solubilities down to 400°C; which data agree well with previously measured solubilities in the 600" to 700°C temperature range.&apos; The present paper has in part the purpose of extending his work to still lower temperatures. Earlier work of Low and Gensamer3 on iron has established that the presence of a relatively small amount of carbon can play a tremendous role in affecting the mechanical properties. In particular they found that the yield point remained high as they reduced the amount of carbon in the iron; the yield point dropped only after the carbon content had fallen to something less than 0.003 wt pct, the point where their carbon analysis failed. It seemed desirable to the present author to see if some means could not be found to extend this part of their work. This investigation has then the additional purpose to determine the range of carbon concentration in which the major change occurs. Solubility The method used in the present work to measure small percentages of carbon in a-iron utilizes internal friction. On June 30, 1960, ground was broken for the construction of the facilities to mine, concentrate, and agglomerate the iron ores of the Atlantic City, Wyo., area which has become known as the "Atlantic City Project." This was a historic occasion for Columbia-Geneva Steel Division of United States Steel Corp. When completed, the installation will be the first integrated iron ore beneficiation plant west of the Mississippi River producing an agglomerated product. This Project, named for a nearby ghost mining town, is located in central Wyoming on the south-east flank of the Wind River Mountains. It is 16 miles north of the South Pass, where the early pioneers who followed the Mormon and Oregon Trails crossed the Continental Divide. White men first penetrated into this area in October, 1812, when Robert Stuart Party brought the returning Astorians through South Pass on route to St. Louis from the Columbia River area. Further interest in the area developed when gold was discovered in the sands of Rock Creek and the towns of Atlantic City and South Pass City were founded.

THE method of charging a reverberatory furnace has changed many times since smelting was introduced in this country from the old smelters of Swansea, England. The cause of the latest change at the Garfield plant has been the excessive fineness of the charge due to fine grinding in the concentration of the crude copper ores. The many desirable features of deep-bath smelting as now used at Garfield have been proved. The old method of dropping the charge through holes in the arch (known as center-feed method) causes excessive dusting which makes heavy slag and causes flue-dust losses, also rapid deterioration of the silica brickwork of the furnace through fusion .with the iron oxides from the dust. The purpose of this paper is to describe a gun feeder that was designed to overcome the disadvantages of the older methods of center feeding and still maintain the good features of deep-bath smelting with the hot finer charge. A gun feeder was designed to introduce the finely divided hot calcines under the moving gas stream of the combustion zone and still have them spread in a uniform blanket over the highly heated matte bath. The temperature of the furnace was so great that it was impossible to maintain a stationary feeder, so a movable feeder was designed that could be introduced into the highly heated zone and be withdrawn after the charge had been dropped. It was necessary to protect the nozzle of the gun with a water-cooled coil. Many different types of protected nozzles were tried, such as air jackets, water jackets and heat-resisting steel alloys, but none proved satisfactory.

At the General Electric ResearchLabora-tories, we have been interested in the iron-manganese system and the effect of hydrogen on the properties of these alloys. Dr. H. H. Uhlig previously has presented some of these results.&apos; We wish now to offer some other of the data that have a bearing on the subject of this symposium. In the determination of hydrogen in the iron-manganese system by any heating Method we are presented with the problem of the evaporation of volatile manganese and the consequent adsorption of hydrogen by this evaporated metal. It seems wise. therefore, to extract gas at as low a temperature as feasible. Consequently we chose the vacuum or hot extraction method for the analyses of these alloys. The apparatus used is shown in Fig. I. The design is a modification of the apparatus described by Holm and Thompson. To limit loss of hydrogen, samples are stored in a chamber immersed in liquid air. We recommend this procedure whenever there is a question of loss of hydrogen at room temperature. Thence they are moved to the quartz furnace by means of a small magnet, where they are heated by induction to 700&apos; to 800°C. The extracted gas is removed by the circulating pump and placed in the known volume VI (or V2). The circulating pump has been described.3 It is so designed that in spite of the fact that the outlet portion of the pump is part of the known volume, this volume is affected neither by the speed of pumping nor by the pressure of stored gas. They let the whole world know again that not only could we do it, but we make it look easy. The great crews before Scott, Irwin and Worden of Apollo 15 have all blended warm humor, informality and dexterity to put on a good show: but it keeps getting better and the last one was the best. Scott&apos;s rendition of Galileo&apos;s experiment using a hammer and a feather--not just any feather, but a falcon feather after the name of the LEM-was priceless. One generation of school kids will never forget that lesson. The final touch was in the "would-you-believe&apos;&apos;" category, Now if English astronauts had been performing the mission, the sign-off would have been typically low key. Something like; "well its tea time, chaps; we&apos;ll have to toddle along." Apollo 15 surprised and thrilled spectators by blasting off to the Air Force song "Off we go into the wild blue yonder" and leaving a camera behind to photograph their own ascent. Now that is what we call showmanship. There is another aspect to our space show and that is that it cost billions of dollars to put on. With that kind of backing, the world for an audience and in the face of grave personal risk, one would expect the space explorers to be all business. Instead they did their jobs with limpid buoyancy. Our older readers will recall and contrast a movie of the thirties and the tense atmosphere when they had to talk that kid up there (Franchot Tone) down through the zero ceiling. A feat of considerably less difficulty than docking LEM. but nevertheless the gut tightening drama was absent in the latter event. In another example, few of us can visualize reporting back after a business mission to one of the old barons such as J. P. Morgan in any but the most sedate and business-like terms. In fact we don&apos;t have to go that far back, as we can think of a few pepper-pot bosses we have had to whom one always played it straight.

Twenty years ago, the northern Oquirrh Mountains overlooking Salt Lake City were bare. Heavy logging and overgrazing combined with erosion and uncontrolled forest fires had severely denuded the mountains by the turn of the century. As a final coup de grace, a copper smelter was built there in 1906, and for the next 50 years its sulfurous fumes killed off what little vegetation remained. In 1956, Paul Rokich, a biology student at the Univer¬sity of Utah, started to surreptitiously restore the mountains. For the next 17 years, Rokich devoted his spare time and money to replanting the Oquirrhs, with the result that several thousand acres of the mountains are green again, and animals have returned: deer, elk, and rabbits thrive among olive, maple, and fruit trees, wheat grass, and sunflowers.
