The transient flow of gases in long pipe lines is a problem of industrial interest. The present discussion deals with the application of the conservation of momentum and material to the transient flow of gas in conduits which are long with respect to their diameter. Solutions of the resulting equations include consideration of variations in friction and specific volume of the fluid as functions of time and position along the conduit. The changes in state along the pipe line are established as a function of time. The methods proposed may be extended to other situations. The flow of compressible fluids under steady conditions' has been considered in detail. Primary emphasis was placed on the development of simple means of taking into account the non-uniform flow' realized in long conduits under such conditions. Binder2 discussed the essential differences between the flow of compressible and uoncompressible fluids. Bonilla" proposed direct methods of solution for equations describing isothermal flow in long pipes. Similar considerations limited to steady flow have been discussed by Ruth.' Palsgrove 5 sugrested a graphical means of solving specific problems relating to the flow of gases in conduits of uniform section. Some of the basic concepts of the flow of a compressible viscous fluid in straight tubes have been described by Kuo.6 Problems of this type require knowledge of the equation of state of the fluid. In many cases it liar been convenient to assume that the fluid follows the relationship ascribed to a perfect gas. The treatment of unsteady flow of compressible fluids is less complete. This state of affairs result* from the fact that the differential equations relating pressure and flow rate with time and position for unsteady flow are nonlinear in character.' Muskat and Wyckoff presented an excellent treatment of the situation in laminar Bow where inertia forces were not of controlling importance. Somewhat earlier Hurst9 discussed the uncteady flow of fluids in petroleum reservoirs. Helhering-ton. MarRoberts. and Huntington'" established experimentally the pressure distribution and accumulative flow rate of natural gas through an unconsolidated sand. Recently Joffe11,12 conhitlcretl the specific problem of the flow of natural gas in relatively long.,. pipe lines for unsteady conditions with emphasis upon the economic feusibility of the storage of gas in such a reservoir. These discussions were based upon approximations of the partial differential equations applying to the condititons of flow. The results were descriptive of the physical situation and indirated the effertiveness of large pipe lines as cyclic storage facilities for natural gas. The advent of analog computers" has increased materially the practicality of solving nonlinear partial differential expressions. Several iterative numerical and graphical methods14,15,16 have been developed to solve nonlinear equations. However, it appears that the pair of simultaneous nonlinear partial differential equations involved in problems of this nature are not directly susceptible to solution by presently available analog computer or formal iterative numerical techniques. Nevertheless. graphical analyses afford a means of obtaining data of engineering value without special equipment. MATHEMATICAL CONSIDERATIONS Since the length of the conduit is large in comparison to the cross section in the cases to be considered, it is possible to treat the characteristics of the flow as independent of position in the cross section of the conduit. This possibility follows since the energy- connected with the velocity profile is small compared to that required to overcome the friction associated with its movement throughout the length of the line. Average values of the pressure. velocity. kinetic energy. momentum, and specific volume may he assigned to the fluid at any particular cross section. From a mathematical viewpoint this may be expressed in the following way for velocity: µ = µ(?X)..........(1) The uncertainties introduced by such assumptions usually are negligible when the ratio of length to diameter is greater than the order of 1.000. On this basis a volume element ma!. be considered to occupy the entire cross section of the conduit. Such an element is presented in Fig. 1.

Peru is divided into three regions—the coast, the ~ierra, or high mountainous region, and the " montaiia," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.—The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (gcirua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic, or Humboldt, ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. N ear the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as prodnce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.—The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. I) The Object of the Present Experiment. When the oxygen chemical potential in the gas phase is changed, the oxygen chemical potential in the liquid metal or in the liquid oxide phase will be subsequently changed. The object of the present experiment is to develop a method of measuring the change in the chemical potential of oxygen in liquid metals and in liquid oxides with respect to time, when the oxygen potential in the gas phase changes. II) The Experimental Method. MR. BIRKINBINE'S description of the bad working and sudden chilling of the Warwick Furnace last summer, seems to me quite phenomenal in blast-furnace practice. During my connection with the management of blast furnaces for many years, in the anthracite, coke, and raw-bituminous coal districts, such a case has never come under my notice. It seems to me that the scaffold in the zone of fusion could not have established itself (so that the whole power of the engines, with a blast pressure ranging from 12 to 18 pounds per square inch, could not penetrate), unless the furnace was previously badly scaffolded and bridged in some of its upper sections, from 15 to 30 feet above the hearth level, either in the zone of chemical action or the beginning of the zone of fusion. Such a "barrier to the upward gaseous currents would cause a suspension of combustion which may have superinducedd the scaffold that is assumed to have existed in the zone of fusion. It is Difficult to conceive' that an agglomerated mass almost across the section of the lower bosh should have formed all at once, if the furnace was free and porous for the reaction of the gaseous currents above. Therefore, I think, the Warwick furnace was by no means in as free, open, and fine internal condition at the time the trouble commenced as the description of its regular working would lead us to suppose. I do not question the accuracy of the statements relative to the output of iron, etc. I merely claim that the phenomena., as described, could not have been almost instantaneously developed, unless there had been an incipient seaffold and lodgment above the zone of fusion. The use of steam-stamps in the crushing of ore for the purpose of amalgamation has been very limited, and little has been written on the subject. As the writer has been operating a mill of this kind during the past year, it is possible that he may be able to present a few points in regard to mill-practice in this line which will be of interest. The mill herein referred to contains two Tremain steamstamps, a more detailed description of which will be given below. A bond and lease had been taken on a property on Cross mountain, Gunnison county, Colo., and the parties operating wished to prospect it thoroughly and did not wish to ship out the ore, owing to high freight-rates. They looked around to find some mill that would answer the purpose and not be too expensive. The steam-stamp in question was finally decided on, and the writer was employed to erect and operate it. The economy of construction was demonstrated at the outset. The stamps were dropping within ten days from the time that the machinery was unloaded on the ground. A large portion of this period was consumed in waiting for supplies and fittings which should have been on the ground at the Hame time with the machinery. Ore.—The ore to be treated was a mixture of white, porous quartz, with the decomposed and undecomposed oxides of iron and manganese in varying proportions, from the pure white quartz to solid pieces of the oxides. It appeared to be the product of replacement in a soft dolomite at or near the line of contact with a dike of porphyry. On careful examination with the aid of a microscope it was found that the gold was in the form of an extremely thin film over the surfaces of the quartz, making only a bronzy-yellow coating, quite readily distinguished from the film of iron oxide, which was also present. An analysis of the kinetics of dolomite grinding in a dry ball mill reveals that the following approximations apply for the parameters of the batch grinding model: (1) the size discretized selection functions are proportional to the specific power input to the mill, and (2) the breakage functions can be taken as invariant. These approximations are shown to provide the basis for accurate predictions of product size distributions obtained for several mill speed, ball load, and particle load combinations within the normal ball mill operating range. The engineering implications of these findings are discussed.

INTRODUCTION There is no hard and fast rule on whether functions within a company, diversified or otherwise, should be strongly centralized or decentralized. In all diverse organizations, there are certain basic functions which remain common (or central) to each element of the business, viz: Personnel Management Cash Management Taxation Management Legal Planning Accounting Standards It would follow that each of these common factors requires some supervision at a central level to ensure that overall group objectives are met. It is true that other functions including: Industrial Relations Marketing and Distribution Production Research and Development Purchasing Management Accounting may also be common to each element of the organization. However, there is far less commonality in the degree to which these functions are central to the efficient performance and financial well-being of the business. Role of Operating Units The resources of operating centers may be viewed as a bank of funds, the nature of which can be changed from time to time, but the employment of which must provide for ongoing increases in the net worth of the total enterprise expressed in terms of market values. Operating units are required to continually review products, methods, and opportunities and to monitor avenues for incremental investment--all with a view to attaining the necessary additive net present value of future cash flows of the enterprise. Operating units should be permitted sufficient autonomy to enable the best use to be made of the skills and experience of the people it employs in order to produce a return appropriate to the value of assets employed. Role of Head Office The head office will typically comprise a specialist group--the leaner the better if one strongly adopts the decentralist approach--often acting as Service Centers but also performing a control function in the corporate sense. The head office function is a cost center. It may be instrumental in developing strategies for increasing revenues or reducing costs on a group scale, but it does not generate revenue. Every dollar spent on this function is an extra dollar to be generated by the operating centers in order to achieve an increase in corporate wealth. TREASURY MANAGEMENT Treasury management is concerned with the provision of finance, cash-flow management, and risk analysis. Each decision taken within the enterprise has a cash implication. It follows that a well-integrated central Treasury function can, in all likelihood, produce economic benefits. The degree to which the function should be centralized depends largely upon the unique nature of the operating units it is servicing. Levels of ownership, the calibre of unit operating managers, and the nature and geographic distribution of the business are all factors determining the degree to which the Treasury function is centralized. In the case of Peko-Wallsend, the Treasury Department is small, comprising four people. While divisional cash-flow management is largely decentralized, Treasury is responsible for the daily management of funds surplus to the immediate needs of operating units. The quenching technique has been used to study phase relations in the composition area 2FeO.SiO2-FeO-SiO2-MnO.Si02-ZMnO.SiO2 of the system iron oxide-manganese oxide-silica under strongly reducing conditions such as exist in a gas mixture consisting of equul parts of carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of most mixtures in the composition area studied are in the range of 1173° to 1345°C. EQUILIBRIUM relations existing among the oxides of iron, manganese, and silicon are of particular interest in two areas of steelmaking: slags and ingot inclusions. Mixtures of these oxides represent about 90 pct of the slag in the acid steelmaking process, and so dominate the chemistry of the whole refining process. These constituents also play an important role in the early slags existing at the time of the "lime boil" in the basic open hearth process. If these slags are liquid, they "wet" the lumps of lime rising from the bottom of the bath, and react with them. A liquid slag rich in CaO is then formed at the very beginning of the refining. Because the temperature is still low, all conditions for a good dephosphoriza-tion are fulfilled at this stage of the operation. Metal deoxidized with ferromanganese or silico-manganese is likely to contain, as inclusions, phases made up from among the oxides of iron, manganese, and silicon. A knowledge of stability relations existing among the phases present in this system, therefore, enables one to predict the hardness of the inclusions encountered. Moreover, because the shape of the inclusions in steel has a profound influence on the physical properties of the metal, it is important to establish whether or not the oxidic material is present as liquid or crystalline phases during heating and rolling of the steel (-1150 to 1350°C). A knowledge of melting relations in synthetic mixtures of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and silica will give a clue to these problems. Methods for determining such relations and the results obtained are described iln this paper. I) PREVIOUS WORK A number cf previous studies have dealt with the three "binary"* systems bounding the system iron oxide-mangar,.ese oxide-silica. The system iron oxide-silica was studied by Bowen and shairerl in 1932. Their data were obtained by equilibration of mixtures in contact with metallic iron. Phase relations for the system iron oxide-silica ill atmospheres of different oxygen pressures car1 be derived from data on the system FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 as determined by Muan.2 The diagram shown iri Fig. l is a section of this system in an atmosphere of CO2 and H2 in ratio 1:l. The system manganese oxide-silica has also been the subject of several investigations. Most of the early studies suffered from a lack of proper control of the atmosphere under which the equilibrations were carried mt. Phase diagrams for the system at two well defined levels of oxygen pressures have been determined recently. Glasser3 determined stability relations in an atmosphere consisting of carbon dioxide and hydrogen in ratio 5:1, diagram Fig. 2, and Muan4 studied phase relations in the system in air.

Preliminary estimates indicate that world consumption of petroleum and related fuels in 1938 will be close to 1,908,000,000 bbl., or approximately 7,000,000 bbl. less than in 1937. This total does not include military consumption in foreign countries, which for obvious reasons is not made public. Foreign military consumption in any one year, however, is approximately represented by the difference between the total production of petroleum and related fuels and the "partial total" consumption above noted, after adding any decrease, or subtracting any increase in stocks in the United States. Fig. 1 illustrates this "difference" and shows that in 1937 and 1938, owing to the wars in China and Spain and the possibility of armed conflict in Central Europe, foreign military consumption—and possibly additions to foreign stocks—increased nearly 70,000,000 bbl. in 1937 over 1936 and remained at this high rate throughout 1938. No official information on foreign oil stocks is available to the writers. Table 1, recently published, purports to give the oil in storage in some of the European countries, but it is not known whether the figures include oil stocks for military purposes. It should be noted that with the annexation by Germany of Austria and part of Czechoslovakia the consumption of the country has increased to 53,000,000 bbl., which is about 36,000,000 short of the German produc-

DEVELOPMENT of a simple radioactive tracer technique for measurement of the diffusion coefficient of calcium ion in liquid slag has already been reported. The investigation was of a preliminary nature designed to explore the possibilities of using radioactive isotopes and to establish a method, and no great accuracy was claimed for the results. It was shown, however, that Ca15 could be used successfully, and the values obtained for the diffusion coefficient appeared to be of the right order of magnitude. However, it was considered that a better technique could be devised for carrying out the diffusion. The experiments were, therefore, continued to find a more accurate method, to check the calcium results, and to extend the investigation to include measurements of the diffusion coefficient of silicon in the same slag. There were two flaws in the original technique. Convection was the cause of too many failures, and the interface between the two slags in the diffusion cell was curved rather than plane, probably due to a surface tension effect caused by the addition of the tracer Ca45 in the form of chloride. Two methods of overcoming these defects were tried. Since it was planned to study diffusion of the short-lived isotope Si"' also, the development of methods was restricted to those which gave promise of being reasonably rapid. Method 1—The principle was identical to that previously used with respect to the diffusion conditions, but there were three differences in technique. Temperature control was more rigid, the tracer was added to the slag as Ca45O rather than the chloride and, finally, an effort was made to translate to high temperatures the elegant method developed by Cohen and BruinV or bringing together the two liquid layers and beginning the diffusion. A master slag was melted in graphite, ground to a fine powder, and analyzed (38.5 pct Ca0-20.9 pct Al2O3-40.5 pct SiO2). The tracer was received as Ca45C12 in an aqueous solution of CaC12 + HC1. From this, calcium oxalate was precipitated, ignited to calcium oxide, and added as such to the slag to give an activity of approximately 5 µc per g. The mixture was then melted into the form of a cylinder 3/16 in. diam and about 1 in. long. A solution identical to the tracer solution without Ca45 was given exactly the same treatment. The resulting Ca40O was mixed with that slag which was to form the tracer-free half of the diffusion cell, and this was likewise melted into a cylinder of the same size. Introduction It has been observed that where veins or other types of orebodies are intersected by cross faults, the continuation of the ore deposit below the fault is often of lower grade than that portion above the dislocation.1 In some mines, the reverse of these conditions has been noted, and the richest ore is found to occur in that portion of the vein beneath the fault intersection. Such instances seem to be less frequent than those where the richest ore is above the offset. The important and widespread influence of fault and vein intersections upon the localization of ore shoots is well known 2 but the factors that govern the position of the ore shoot relative to the fault intersection seem to be less clearly understood. The richest ore may be above or below the fault,. or it may occur at-the point of intersection, or there may be no change. Recent observations made by the writer in mines in Idaho and Montana suggested a possible explanation for the changes in the richness of ore below certain types of fault intersections. These observations have been supplemented by a study of the literature containing detailed descriptions of ore deposits at a large number of mines in North America. The results of these studies are presented herewith in the hope that they may lead to further discussion of this important phase of ore deposition.
