Introduction IN a leaching process, having obtained the copper in solution, the choice of the precipitation method is influenced y the following factors: 1. Availability of precipitant. 2. Adaptability to the leaching process. 3. Final product desired. 4. Regeneration of leaching solutions. 5. Fouling of solutions. There are three general classes of precipitation methods: 1. The use of iron, scrap or sponge. 2. Electrolytic deposition. 3. The use of some gas or reagent y which the copper is obtained, usually in the form of an intermediate precipitate which requires further treatment. For example, the precipitation of the copper as Cu2Cl2 from chloride solutions, with SO2 gas. The use of iron is adapted to almost any process. It has the great advantage of extreme simplicity, and the recovery of the copper and any values present in a highly concentrated, easily treatable form. The disadvantages are the cost in isolated places, the uncertainty of the scrap-iron market, and the fouling of the leaching solutions. The latter is a serious factor, When a reagent such as salt is used in them, which makes necessary their re-use. Where applicable, electrolytic deposition is very attractive. The copper is obtained in a form directly marketable, there is a regeneration of acid amid no fouling of solutions. Unfortunately, chloride solutions do not lend themselves to electrolysis. An entirely satisfactory anode material has not yet been discovered, although magnetite, apart from being rather brittle, seems to answer the requirements fairly Well.

THIS paper is presented with the idea of discussing only the basic open-hearth charge. The importance of the charging operation in producing steel is more clearly understood by dividing the principal components into four groups and discussing each separately, thereby becoming acquainted with what constitutes a charge. The significance of these components in the charge itself will then be taken up. Classification of the charge components is as follows: steel scrap; pig iron ; limestone ; refractories and coke. Steel Scarp The first component, steel scrap, according to size, analysis and cleanliness, may be classified as heavy, medium and light. Heavy melting scrap includes crop ends such as are produced in blooming ingots or the heavy crops from bar mills abovely in. in diameter; railroad scrap, which comprises rails, side-plates, car-frames, draw- bars, etc.; and such automobile forgings as axles, crank- shafts, gears, etc. This class of scrap should give a four-box charging-car (box dimension 24 by 18 by 72 in.) an average load of 10,000 to 20,000 lb.

It has long been recognized by blastfurnace men that correct top distribution of materials is very important in efficient and economical furnace operation. Thousands of experiments on top design, filling, sizing, and other operations have been carried out to improving furnace performance by securing uniform distribution. Many of these experiments have worked out satisfactorily and have been passed along to the industry. Many of them have been discarded and forgotten. It has been the custom to judge the results of such experimentation by the results shown in improved or lowered furnace efficiency. While the effect on furnace practice will have to continue to be the final criterion of experimental changes, it has always been a desire of blast-furnace men to ascertain the reason for failure or success. Efficiency in the blast furnace approaching the maximum can be measured in several ways: (1) by actual operating results as revealed in the coke rate and tonnage figures, and (2), in the degree to which the top gas approaches the limiting ratio of CO/CO2 for the reduction of iron oxide by CO gas. This ratio is shown in the equilibrium curve in Fig. I for the system Fe-O-C and CO2-CO-C. The closer the top gases approach this limiting ratio (set at 1.08 by Martin1 because of the effect of limestone calcination) the more efficiently we may expect a furnace to operate. The fact that low CO/CO2 ratios parallel eficient operating performance caused us to investigate the cause of good or poor distribution and the effect of filling and other changes on furnace operation. Heretofore it has been possible to take a sample of furnace gas (usually from the dust catcher) and from it determine how closely the reducing gases were to the ideal or limiting value as set by the equilibrium diagram. However, to find just where in the top area the distribution was distorted and the top-gas CO/CO2 ratios were distant from equilibrium values has been a difficult and expensive investigational procedure. In an effort to overcome this difficulty, apparatus was designed to take gas samples and temperatures across the top radius of the furnace. It was hoped that with the aid of this apparatus traverse sampling of the ascending gases could be simplified, and the cost of sampling substantially lowered. Routine experimenting could then be maintained and results checked with furnace operation. It must be emphasized that a traverse sampling is necessary for a true picture, as single samples at any one point are unreliable. This statement can be verified by an examination of Tables 3 to 6, showing results obtained at our furnaces in a large number of tests. Apparatus The design of the equipment for taking the samples was governed by the need for providing a simple, routine test that could be performed fairly quickly without adversely affecting normal furnace operation.

When this country went into the war, but two concerns, The Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Midvale Steel and Ordnance Co., knew how to make steel fit for great cannons and at these concerns there were relatively few men who knew the whole art. Fortunately, certain of these men put their knowledge at the service of the Government, and proceeded to instruct the metallurgists at the arsenals and at various steel works. Doctor Howe, then chairman of the Engineering Division of the National Research Council, suggested that this work might be facilitated, and the number of effective gun-steel makers thereby increased, if a detailed description of the best practice could be written, giving the reasons for the various steps, and issued with the endorsement of a committee composed of those who were evidently the most competent authorities. It was thought that something would be gained by clarification of the subject, and something by the eminent authority of the members of the committee. To that end, the Engineering Division appointed a committee, consisting of the gentlemen whose names follow, to mention on1y those who retained their connection with it. At this time there were serious difficulties in the manufacture, for the Government. of aircraft and high-speed engine crankshafts, of certain ordnance forgings, and of shells for both the Army and Navy. This Committee was asked to study and report upon these, with a view to betterment of practice. There were indications that the source of some of the difficulties went back to the melting of the steel and the production of the ingot. Hence, the committee first studied steel melting and ingot production, in order to guide the wartime manufacturers to an even larger percentage of useful production from the steel initially melted. This report includes the lead isotopic dating of a suite of galenas from Arizona and an application of the K-Ar method to the dating of a Laramide porphyry copper deposit, the Silver Bell Mining District. The lead isotopic data supports prior age assignments based upon geologic inference. The Silver Bell study illustrates the necessity of correlative geologic and petrographic investigations for the interpretation of the results of potassium-argon dating. LEAD ISOTOPIC DATING OF GALENAS FROM ARIZONA ORE DEPOSITS A group of galenas from Arizona ore deposits have been analyzed for lead isotope ratios. The results were used to calculate model ages by the. method of Russell, Stanton and Farquhar,l6 in which the age is calculated directly from the Pb206/Pb207 ratio. The use of Pb206/Pb207 ratios eliminates the errors inherent in measuring the abundance of Pb204. The Holmes-Houtermanns model is the other model commonly used for calculating model ages. Both models assume that any lead sample is composed of primeval and radiogenic components and the calculated age is the time at which the lead was extracted from its source area. Using the Holmes-Houtermanns model, a lead is ordinary if its isotopic ratios lie on an isochron. The growth curve that passes through the experimental point determines the U/Pb ratio in the source area. The RSF model assumes the source area for conformable leads is the mantle, that this has a uniform U/Pb ratio, and thus all ordinary leads must lie on a single growth curve, having a mantle U/Pb ratio. The definition of an ordinary lead differs between the models, and differences in age arise mainly from the assumptions made to evaluate parameters in the model equations. These assumptions depend on the hypothesis chosen to explain ore genesis. In the RSF Model, the Pb206/Pb207 ratio is derived as a function of time. The equation contains three undetermined parameters which are evaluated by assuming three known points lie on the curve. These are the following: 1) Primeval lead from the Canyon Diablo and Henbury meteorites, 2) Modern conformable leads which lie on Patterson's zero isochron, 3) Lead from the Bathurst, New Brunswick base metal deposits. The Bathurst deposits are postulated to be examples of "conformable base metal deposits", as proposed by Stanton.l9 A conformable deposit has a particular genetic history and, as a result, the orebody conforms to stratigraphic layering in the host rock. The metals are brought to the surface in volcanic rocks which originated in the mantle. Weathering products of these rocks, including sulfur and metals, accumulate in areas undergoing sedimentation. The formation of sulfide ion in the sediments by the action of sulfate reducing bacteria causes fixation of iron as pyrite. If the pyrite becomes concentrated in favorable stratigraphic horizons, any base metal deposit eventually formed by replacement of pyrite will have a strata bound character. Compaction and expulsion of pore water from the sediments at depth result in upward mobility of solutions containing soluble base metal chlorides. The strata with high pyrite content act as chemical traps for the base metal ions and replacement occurs. An important result of this general evolutionary model is that, if complete separation of lead and parent isotopes occurred during accumulation of the sediments, any ore deposit formed solely of metals derived from those sedimentary rocks will contain "conformable" lead. This would be true even if the actual ore deposit were formed at a later date by some epigenetic process. In this case, mineralization would be controlled by local conditions, and need not conform to stratigraphic layering. Also, any ore deposit containing lead derived from a mantle or mantle-like source, even though not conformable in Stanton's sense, will fall on the curve for conformable ores and thus give a meaningful model age. Model ages for Arizona galena deposits are listed in Table 1. Fig. 1 is a location map. Jerome-Humbolt District: Galenas from the United Verde mine at Jerome and the Iron King mine at Humbolt give model ages of 1750 m.y. and 1640 m.y. respectively. A relatively small area in Malaya, about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide, is the most important source of tin in the world. Some tin is recovered in other parts of the peninsula. Of the tin mined, 98 pct is recovered from alluvial deposits. From 1935 to 1941 the average annual world production of tin was 190,000 tons. The average annual production from Malaya during the same period was 62,000 tons or about one third of the total. Other producing countries, in order of importance, were the Netherlands East Indies 34,000 tons, Bolivia 30,000, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Siam, Burma, China, and a few others with smaller amounts. The serious shortage of tin during the war period was due to the fact that the Japanese were occupying Malaya, Netherlands East Indies, Siam, Burma, and China which, together, formerly were producing 65 pct of the world supply.

[SECRETARY'S ]NOTE.-The following notes, arranged and edited in this office, but not yet revised by the author, were placed at my disposal with much modest hesitation (due to their incomplete and fragmentary character), upon my earnest request, and my argument that such recent and trustworthy data concerning a new and important mining industry ought not to be withheld from our Transactions, simply because they are not sufficient to constitute a, complete academic treatise on the subject. This argument is recommended to the attention of many other members, who are waiting for the opportunity to contribute something "monumental" to our Transactions. In a number of instances, death has nulli¬fied this ambition, and the intended "monumental" contribution has turned out to be an obituary notice by the Secretary, instead of a valuable record of the professional experience thus hopelessly lost to the world.-R. R.] The official publications of the the Russian Government give fairly complete statistics of the dredges operated in the Empire; and in a recent English bluebook, Mr. Cook's report on Siberian Trade presents a brief account of dredging in Siberia. The data in Table I. (not given by Mr. Cook) have been taken from the Gold Mining Messenger (Russian) for July, 1905. These interesting statistics, though incomplete, show that the Yenisei dredges are working on poor ground and yield small returns. According to report, but few yield a profit exceeding 10 per cent. per annum on the capital invested. In the summers of 1904 and 1905, I traveled in the Urals as far north as lat. 61° N., long. 61° E., on the the Lozva river, a part of the vast system of the 01) river. This clear-water stream starts from the summits of the Urals at an altitude of 4,000 ft., and flows through a flat country, densely wooded with larch, spruce, pine, fir, birch and poplar. The river is full of fish, and is navigable for good-sized steamers as far as Ivdell. Winter lasts from early November to late April, the temperature rang¬ing from -60° F. to a summer maximum of 90° F. The rain¬fall is 20 in.. The climate is healthy, although mosquitoes,

Laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite is reported. Numerous tests were run on sylvite ore sized in the ranges of 4x20 mesh, 10x65 mesh, 8x100 mesh, -8 mesh and -10 mesh with heavy liquids in the range of 2.05 to 2.15 sp gr. From the test results, it was concluded that, with the type of ore under study and a size in the range of -8 mesh, a recovery as high as 90% could be achieved with a product grade of 70% KCl. However, a final product at an acceptable recovery cannot be made with one pass, and the float must either be further processed with heavy liquids or dried and sent to a conventional froth flotation circuit. Potash ores occurring in this country consist essentially of sylvite and halite plus minor amounts of magnesium sulfate salts and montmoril-lonite-type clays. Recovery of potash minerals from evaporite ores in the North American potash fields is accomplished almost exclusively by use of amine flotation. European practice involves froth flotation as well as solution-crystallization processes. Laboratory and pilot plant test work has been reported in Europe and the U. S. on the application of heavy media separation to potash ore beneficiation. Work was probably discontinued because of lack of ore with the required very coarse liberation characteristics (1/8 to 1/2 in. liberation size). Sylvite, with a gravity of 1.99, and halite, with a gravity of 2.17, appear to be ideal for separation by heavy liquids, which are now available in gravities from 1.59 to 2.95. This paper reviews preliminary results obtained from laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite. TEST WORK The heavy liquids used in the tests under discussion were chlorobromethane, with a specific gravity of 1.923, and dibromethane, with a gravity of 2.490. These liquids, completely miscible, were combined in the proportions needed to give a mixture having the desired specific gravity. Feed for the laboratory tests was mine-run ore screened to the desired mesh sizes. In conducting the tests, the sample was fed at a constant rate into a stream of heavy liquid and the mixture directed into a small separatory vessel. The float overflowed into a collecting pan while the sink collected in the bottom of the separatory vessel and was removed at the end of the test. Approximately 500 g of feed constituted a charge. Pulp density of the feed was kept low to prevent particle to particle interference in separation. With feed in the range of 8x100 mesh, a pulp density of under 10% solids by weight was found advisable. With coarser feed the pulp density could be carried as high as 15% solids. Time of separation was very rapid. In the case of 4x20-mesh material, separation was effected in 15 to 30 sec; with -10-mesh feed, separation required about 1 to 2 min. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT Since heavy liquids are toxic to varying degrees, all separatory work was carried out in a standard laboratory fume hood. It was noted that complete removal of fumes was not being effected; therefore the hood construction was modified, resulting in a completely satisfactory arrangement for heavy liquid test work. In the interest of safety, details of this fume hood are reported here. Unlike most fumes, heavy liquid fumes tend to settle and flow like water, rather than to rise like a gas. Working on this assumption, a standard water drain was installed in the hood. Across the front of the hood a 1-in. barrier was constructed. In the rear of the hood a false back was installed, with an adjustable sliding door on both the bottom and top of this panel. As shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust fan pulled a vacuum behind the barrier, sucking the heavy fumes from the bottom of the hood. Another addition was the drying box, shown to the right of the hood. This is simply a box covered on top with hardware cloth and connected by a 6-in. inlet to the hood. Sample trays made of fine mesh wire filter screens were found ideal for drying samples. OUTCROPS of gypsum rock near the present site of the city of Gland Rapids, Mich., were known to fur traders early in the nineteenth century. However, the deposits seemed without value and were not worked for some time. So far as cat1 be learned, Michigan gyp- sum was first used by a plasterer who settled in Grand Rapids in 1834 as a member of its fourteenth white family. In building a house for one of the early traders, be used some otnamental stucco mouldings manufactured from the local gypsum deposits for decorations in the gables and around some circular windows. The gypsum was broken out with a hammer, ground in an Indian corn mill, and burlled in a caulclron kettle,. After two attempts, the ornaments were successfully set, and remained on the house until it was destroyed by fire in 1850.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a technique for locating and evaluating bedding plane cracks in mine roof by an air-injection and hot-film flow logging technique. It is ultrasensitive to cracks and is especially useful for detecting the early stage of crack development. Potential applications include: (1) correlation with roof sag measurements, (2) locating cracks for grouting, (3) comparison of mechanical and resin roof bolt effectiveness, and (4) possible delineation of the fracture zone to confirm the arch hypothesis. The required equipment is inexpensive and simple to operate.

THE Juneau gold belt is divided into ore-bands of poor definition. The most easterly workings on the , belt, those of the Alaska Gastineau Co., disclosed three separate bands: the Footwall or Ground-hog band, 70 ft. wide; the Perseverance band on which the recent mining was done, also 70 ft. wide; and the No. 2 band, 100 ft. wide. These bands, aggregating 240 ft., are found over a width of 2000 ft. Going toward the west into the adjoining Alaska Juneau ground, four bands have been found which have a total 'right-angle thickness of 755 ft. These bands are convergent in their westerly trend and terminate on the plane of Silver Bow fault. The four bands have better definition at the fault plane than at the eastern boundary line where they enter the property. -Along the property line, the width of the bands and intervening country is 1600 ft., and at the Silver Bow fault this width is reduced to 1300 ft. The distance from the eastern property line to Silver Bow fault is 2400 ft. The bands are slate or slate with metagabbro intrusions, together with gold-bearing quartz masses, stringers, and gash veins. The bands themselves are not all ore, but all commercial .ore is found within the bands. They have no uniform width either in horizontal or vertical section. The ore has no hard and fast boundary except where cut by faults, and profitable mining ceases on a vague and

AMONG the large number of deep mines in the world there are several which do not differ much in depth. The St. John del Rey mine, in Brazil, has reached a vertical depth of 6726 ft. below the top of its shaft; miners enter it, however, through an adit which intersects the shaft 324 ft. below its top, wherefore it might be said that the mine is really only 6400 ft. deep. In the Kolar gold field of India there are a number of deep shafts, one of which reaches to a vertical depth of 6140 ft. below surface. In South Africa also there are a number of deep shafts, the Village Deep being 6100 ft. early in 1921. The City Deep, Ltd., proposes to sink to a depth of 7000 ft. but pre-sumably by the time it does so the St. John del Rey will be deeper than that, since it has been increasing in depth at an average rate of about 150 ft. per year. The deepest shaft in the United States, the Tamarack No. 5, although it is only 5308 ft. deep, actually approaches nearer to the center of the earth (4100 ft. below sea level, as against 3958 ft. , at St. John del Rey). The deepest workings in the Calumet & Hecla go down to 4600 ft. below sea level. The St. John del Rey is not only the deepest, mine in the world, but it also is worked by the oldest registered English mining company, which was organ-ized in 1830 to work a mine at a considerable dis-tance from this one. That mine proved unprofitable, and in 1837 operations were transferred to the. deposit now under discussion, where operations have been prac-tically continuous ever since.

THE atmosphere, which plays such an important part in the manufacture of iron and steel, is the most variable element involved in its several processes; and particularly is this true of the blast-furnace process, which consumes air in large quantities. At no time since the blast-furnace became an important and widely used apparatus-even when it was operated in the most crude manner-have the variations in composition of the raw materials used been as frequent and as great as the variations in humility of the atmosphere. Important, improvements have been made in the blast furnace and its accessories, such as the hot-blast stoves, the increase in size and change in the shape of the furnace, more efficient blowing engines, the increased protection given to the bosh walls, and the careful preparation of' the raw material, all of which have exerted a pronounced influence on the furnace-operations from a metallurgical standpoint. But during the past eight years little advance has been made in this direction; the fuel-consumption has not diminished, nor has there been any material increase in production. Within that period, however, there has been witnessed the greatest development in appliances for the economical handling of material. So complete has been the work in this direction, that, except in isolated cases, in this country at least., a further extension does not hold out much promise of a satisfactory return on the investment required. It seemed that, with the exception of the gas-engine, we had about reached the limit, for like a strong wall, the atmosphere, with its humility as variable to-clay as when first blown into a primitive blast-furnace, appeared to stand as a Barrier to

THE first session of this meeting was held Tuesday evening, in the chamber of the Common Council, the President, Mr. David Thomas, in the chair. Mayor Carroll, of Troy, gave a cordial welcome to the Institute, which was responded to, on behalf of the Institute, by the first Vice-President, Mr. R. W. Raymond.
