In the January Bulletin a list was published of Societies' publications, magazines, etc., which were duplicates and were discarded at the time of-the consolidation of the libraries of the three Founder Societies. A second list published herewith includes text books which are duplicates and which will be disposed of about April 1, 1916, by the Board of Directors of the Institute through the, Library Committee.. If, meanwhile, members desire to secure some of these books, they are asked to communicate at once with the Secretary as. this is an unusual opportunity to secure books at an extremely low price. THE determination of the orientation of metal single crystals and the studies of plastic deformation are greatly facilitated by the use of the stereographic projection. To draw a standard projection of the crystal it is necessary to have a tabulation of the angles between the various crystal-lographic planes of the particular crystal studied. Bozorth' has published such a table for the cubic system which can be found in many reference books; such convenient tabulation for the hexagonal metals, however, does not appear to be in the literature, although scores of workers have calculated these angles. Therefore, Table I of angles for magnesium, zinc, and cadmium has been compiled. Since the c/a ratio is different for each of these metals, three separate calculations are necessary. The angles 4 between (HKIL) and (hkil) were calculated by means of the formula: Hh+Kk+½(Hk + hK)1+~3aLl cos The c/a ratios were calculated from data given in the 1948 edition of Metals Handbook. Fig. 1 is a typical (0001) standard projection of zinc. For all practical purposes, it serves for cadmium as well, as can be seen from the table. THE recovery of gold and silver from their ores by means of the cyanide process has been so successful in the last few years that any radical improvement would seem impossible; yet the appliance to which I wish to call attention in this paper is really a radical departure from the methods now in general use. The most modern and approved of these, known as the all-sliming method, depends for its success on the grinding of the. ore so fine that practically 90 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen. The slimes thus produced are then agitated and aerated in tanks of various types. The main object of this treatment is to insure such a thorough admixture of the pulp and solution that every particle of the ore is surrounded by a volume of solution sufficient to insure the dissolving of the whole of the gold- and silver-content. In addition, in order to expedite the action of the cyanide, and to oxidize such elements as would, if left in their active state, become cyanicides, air is blown in under pressure. In the Pachuca tank, this air is the active and sole means of agitation. The chief objections to all the methods off agitation used heretofore are the expense of operating and maintaining the mechanical devices for keeping the pulp in suspension, and the length of time required to obtain a fairly complete extraction. of the values. These objections are inherent to any method of agitation effecting a circulation of the pulp and the solution together, by giving the whole mass a circular movement, as in the low-tank system, or a vertical circulation, as in the Pachuca-tank system. In both methods, the particles of ore are kept traveling in the same direction as the solution, and with very little difference of speed; so that, while the whole mass is in

For the third year in a row total value of the Nation's mineral production broke all previous records. A new peak of $20.4 billion was reached in 1964. So says the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The Bureau's preliminary estimate for 1964 is $800 million higher than the value reported for 1963, and $1.6 billion greater than the 1962 figure. The unprecedented demand for minerals, has stimulated development of new mines and expansion of processing capacity in many parts of the country.

Electrical ad thermal-conductivity measurements have been made on titanium and 6 titanium alloys. The following expression was derived for calculating thermal conductivity from electrical conductivity: K = 0.626 s T x 10-8 + 0.00497 where K = thermal conductivity, cal sec-1 cm-2 cm0C-1 s = electrical conductivity, ohm-]cm-1 T = temperature, deg Kelvin This expression gives calculated thermal conductivities that are not in error by more than 10 pct from the experimental values for A-55 titanium and the 6 alloys measured; namely, A-110AT, C-110M, C-130AM, Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-140A, and Ti-155A, which are representative of the presently available commercial a and a-ß titanium alloys. THERMAL conduction in a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid is accomplished by energy diffusion from molecule to molecule, a relatively slow process. For this reason, such materials have a low thermal conductivity. When a material is crystalline, there is in addition a heat transfer by a vibratory motion of the crystal lattice. It is the contribution of this lattice conduction that makes a crystal a much better conductor than a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid. Lattice conduction, however, does not account for the relatively enormous thermal conductivity of a metal. This is explained by the freedom of movement of valence electrons. These valence electrons drift in a metal in a direction toward a drop in electrical potential and, to a lesser degree, in the direction of a temperature drop in the metal. Since both the electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal depend upon the presence of free electrons, there should be some relatively simple relation between the two. Wiedemann and Franz in 1653 first discovered an approximate empirical relation between the electrical and thermal conductivities of metals at the same temperature. This ratio varies appreciably with temperature, and Lorenz later showed that by adding a temperature factor to the Wiedemann-Franz ratio the value of K/(s T) is constant, where K is the thermal conductivity, a the electrical conductivity, and T the absolute temperature. This Lorenz constant shows a greater variation for alloys than it does for pure metals, the ratio increasing slightly as the proportion of alloying elements increases. It has been found that a closer correlation between electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity can be obtained by means of an equation of the form K - A s T + B [1] where A and B are constants. In this equation the term AsT is the contribution of electronic conduction and B is the contribution of lattice conduction to the total thermal conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS Electrical-resistivity and thermal-conductivity measurements on titanium and 6 titanium alloys serve as the basis for determining an equation of the K = AsT + B type for titanium alloys. Specimens—Table I shows nominal compositions of the 7 metals on which electrical and thermal conductivities were measured. The electrical and thermal-conductivity specimens for each alloy were taken from stock of the same heat and usually from adjacent sections of the same bar. THE Institute met on Wednesday evening, May 22d, in the parlor of the Stanton House, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, President, in the chair. The President delivered an introductory address on the Brown Hematite Deposits of the Great Valley, after which the following papers were read and discussed : Note on the Result of an Experiment with the Wheeler Process of Combining Iron and Steel in the Head of a Rail, by W. E. C. Coxe, of Reading, Pa. On the Jenks Corundum Mine, Macon County, N. C., by Dr. R. W. Raymond, of New York City. On Wednesday afternoon, previous to the opening session, the members who had already arrived in Chattanooga, were taken by the Local Committee to the works of the Roane Iron Company, and Chattanooga Iron Company, and then to the top of Lookout Mountain, where, at the request of the members present, Dr. Hunt described the geological and geographical features of the Chattanooga region, with the magnificent panorama spread out before them as a map. On Thursday morning an excursion was made by steamboat down the Tennessee River as far as Shellmound. Here cars were taken to the coal mines of the Dade Coal Company, where the members were courteously received by Mr. E. B. Wells, the Superintendent. After a trip through the mines the party partook of a collation provided by the company. South Pittsburgh, on the Tennessee River, was next visited, where the Southern States Coal, Iron and Land Company have a large blast-furnace plant in the course of erection. After conducting the party through the works, shops, etc., Mr. James Bowron, the manager, entertained the members with graceful hospitality at dinner. The second session was held on Thursday evening for the transaction of business. The President, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, appointed Messrs. W. E. C. Coxe, R. H. Richards, and F. J. Slade, scrutineers, to examine the ballots for officers for the ensuing year.

Ores containing uranium and vanadium minerals have been mined from the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation from many localities in the Colorado Plateau region since about 1900. The most productive deposits are in a relatively small area in Southwestern Colorado referred to as the Uravan mineral belt. The mineral belt is a narrow elongate area in which uranium-vanadium deposits in the Salt Wash have a closer spacing, larger size, and higher grade than those in adjoining areas. Pre- 1948 ore production from the mineral belt was 655,000 tons averaging 1.91 per cent V2O5 and 0.28 per cent U3O8. Production during the 1948 to 1964 period was 7,900,000 tons of ore averaging 1.46 per cent V2O5 and 0.27 per cent U3O8. The ore deposits occur principally in the uppermost sandstone unit of the Salt Wash. This unit consists of sandstone lenses formed by a system of aggrading braided streams flowing in an easterly direction generally normal to the mineral belt. These lenses, referred to as channels, are as much as one mile in width and average about 50 feet in thickness and can be traced for several miles along their courses. Areas favorable for one deposits are recognized principally by the following criteria: ( 1) a host sandstone thickness of over 30 feet, (2) the presence of carbonaceous material in the host sandstone, and ( 3) gray mudstones and clays associated with the ore-bearing sandstone. The ore minerals are believed to have been precipitated from laterally migrating solutions; there is no apparent genetic relationship between ore deposits and tectonic structural features. Exploratory and development drilling from the surface is conducted in three phases: first, wide-spaced drilling to find and outline favorable channels; second, moderate-spaced drilling in favorable ground to locate ore deposits; and third, close-spaced drilling to block-out ore. Long-hole drilling from underground stations is used to find and delineate extensions of ore bodies being mined. Due to intense production since 1948 from shallow deposits, best potential for new deposits exists in areas where the ore-bearing unit is 600 to 800 feet deep.

Under a cooperative agreement between United States Bureau of Mines and the Truax-Traer Coal Company, some operating-scale experiments have been made with the cyclone thickener in the preparation plant of the Shamrock No. 1 mine at Kayford, West Virginia. These tests were made with a 14-in. cyclone of the type developed by the Dutch State Mines in Limburg. It was applied experimentally to the thickening of solids in washery water to obtain performance data to show the range of sizes that may be recovered and other operating characteristics that would indicate the field of usefulness of this device in coal preparation practice. This is a progress report only. It covers results obtained in a series of 17 tests of the operation of what has been considered a unit of commercial size operating on suspensions of fine coal mixed with a relatively small amount of freeimpurities. The underflow material, after further dewatering in centrifuges, is a marketable grade of coal.

THE efficient recovery and preparation of small sizes of anthracite called No. 4 Buckwheat (3/3 2 by 1/3 2 in.) and No. 5 Buckwheat (1/3 2 in. by 0), present a difficult problem to the anthracite operators. In many instances preparation of these sizes, particularly No. 5 anthracite, is extremely inefficient. In many of the older preparation plants, inadequate facilities, and often none at all, were provided as an integral part of the plant for cleaning this fine anthracite. Consequently, much of the material smaller than s, 32 in. was discarded. As the demand for these sizes increased, facilities for preparing the fine sizes were often crowded into existing structures with consequent sacrifices of capacities and efficiency. In addition to this condition, the methods of preparing the finest sizes are being developed in an attempt to improve their efficiencies. Because the demand for small sizes of anthracite still is increasing, many operators would benefit by investigating and improving the cleaning equipment employed on these sizes.

Discussion of the paper of FRANKLIN MOELLER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 343 to 354. K. A. PAULY, Schenectady, N. Y.-I read with interest Mr. Moeller's paper descriptive of the mechanical parts of the new electric hoist at the Granite Shaft of the North Butte Mining Co. and as the paper treats largely of the mechanical equipment I have little discussion to offer. There is, however, one question which I would like to ask and that is, why the discrepancy in hoisting cycles between the curves given in the paper read by Mr. Sykes for the American Institue of Electrical Engineers at San Francisco and those given in the paper under discussion? In Mr. Sykes' curves the acceleration period is shown to be 16 sec. for all depths from 2,000 to 4,000 ft. inclusive, while Mr. Moeller in Fig. 2 shows 25 sec. throughout the range and in Fig. 4 shows 35 sec. THE properties of the Patiño Mines and Enterprises Consolidated, Inc., a New York corporation, are near Llallagua in the department of Chayanta in the west central part of Bolivia, South America, about 80 miles southeast of Oruro and 250 miles southeast of La Paz, the largest city in Bolivia and its virtual capital. The properties are accessible by railroad from three points on the west coast-from Mollendo, Peru, across Lake Titicaca, from Arica by way of La Paz, and from Antofagasta, Chile. The latter route, although the longest, is recommended by the companies as affording a more gradual introduction to the high altitudes; the mine being 13,000 ft. above sea level. The company operates its own railroad from its properties at Uncia to Machacamarca on the Chile & Bolivia R. R., a distance of 60 miles. This railroad is well equipped and well operated, and its location among the mountains surrounding Uncia represents excellent engineering skill. In fact all of the railroads, although they are of only a meter gage, are remarkable for the excellence of their construction, the arrangement of their dining and sleeping cars and the precision of their operation. There is only one drawback to rail- road and hotel accommodations and that is the absence of heating facilities, which does not seem to affect the natives but keeps a tenderfoot's teeth chattering continually. The company is a consolidation of the Patiño company, owning properties at Uncia, with the Compafiia Estanfera de Llallagua, a' Chilean corporation owning contiguous properties at Llallagua. Before the consolidation these companies were deadly enemies, and there still remain at the surface plant at Uncia the fortifications and underground defences provided during the warfare between the two factions. Also, in the Azul, or "Blue" tunnel at the junction line between the two properties is a strong steel barricade still bearing marks of the bullets fired during the various armed tilts between the workmen of the two companies. The headquarters for the mining operations and the milling plant have been moved since the consolidation from the original location at Uncia to the Llallagua side of the mountain, where the Chilean company's operations were carried on. The historic old town of Uncia, with its massive stone buildings of Spanish design, is a wreck, while the Llallagua side is being rapidly built up with modern structures.

IN THE congressional act establishing the Bureau of Mines one of the functions outlined was "to assist I the industry in the prevention of mineral waste." This had not only to do with the waste in mining but in milling and metallurgical practices, including smelting. The organization of the Bureau of 'Mines includes many divisions, each working in a particular field and charged with certain investigative work. The metallurgical division has the above duties under its immediate supervision, and the station located at Salt Lake City is directed by the chief of this division: There are ten experiment stations of the Bureau of Mines, located in various parts of the country, most of them being housed at state universities under cooperative agreements. Considerable care was exercised in locating the stations and in choosing the particular type of work to be investigated at each place. Inasmuch as the Bureau was designed to serve and cooperate with the industry it is only natural that the investigative work be of interest and importance to the territory immediately adjacent to the respective stations.

SECOND only to the February Annual Meeting of the Institute are the Regional and Divisional meetings held in the fall of each year. Six such gatherings are scheduled in the next the months, with something likely to interest every member of the Institute. A brief résumé of the programs follows. Regional Meeting Vancouver T HE regional meeting of the Institute will be held at Vancouver, Sept. 13 to 20, in conjunction with the annual western meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The pro gram appeared on page 350 of MINING AND METALLURGY for July and-proof of careful preparation-a month later re- quires no correction and little elaboration. On the technical side there are few changes. A new item on the Wednesday morning program is the paper, "Investigation of Residential-type Stokers," by H. F. Yancey, supervising engineer, Northwest Experiment Station. U. S. Bureau of Mines, Seattle. As to entertainment the meeting is taking on some most pleasurable aspects. Two notable excursions have been arranged.

A high seam geologic condition exists at Jim Walter Resources No. 4 mine that requires immediate rib support after a continuous miner cuts a place. High seam mining heights are typically 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 9 ft) and a thick rock layer is present in the upper portion of the coal rib side. The 610-m (2000 ft) mining depth at No. 4 mine induces horizontal rib line movement after excavating an entry. Horizontal rib movement greater than 305 mm (12 in.) have been noted. When lateral movement occurs in the high seam areas, the thick rock layer, and the coal above the rock layer, become fractured and tend to roll into the entry. If not adequately supported, large rib rolls develop in the place being bolted as well as in previously mined areas that endanger men and equipment. To control this, rib support must be installed in the roof bolting operation as the bolting crew works toward the face. A rib control system has been developed for this high seam mining condition using a mechanical anchor bolt placed at an angle in the rib and installed with a modified Fletcher DDM-15 bolting machine. More than 120 km (75 miles) of entry have been supported with angle rib bolts. These angle bolts constitute 43% to 60% of the total roof and rib bolt footage in the high seam portions of No. 4 mine. The angle rib bolting system has proven safer, more effective, and more efficient than the earlier support method using bolts installed horizontally into the rib. No rib roll accidents have occurred since the angle drill bolting machines were placed in service in 1981. By securing the broken rib material with an angle bolt anchored above the coal pillar, a more effective means of rib control is achieved. Angle rib bolting does not interfere with continuous miner productivity. In addition, bolting crews are now reduced from three to two people. Total drilling supply costs are about 60% the previous cost, when compared to the previous support method using horizontal rib bolts:

AS this is written, the probability A is that the bituminous coal out- put for 1936 will approximate 420,000,000 tons (of 2000 lb.) with an average working time for all mines of 205 days. The results for 1935 approximated 369,224,000 tons, with the mines working about 185 days. The increase in production of 14 per cent is heartening. In anthracite, it is probable that the preliminary figures covering output for 1935, 51,- 003,000 tons, will be exceeded this year although the percentage of in- crease will almost certainly be small. The substantial tonnage of anthracite illegally mined, estimated to be 3,600,- 000 tons in 1935, with a similar large Lonnage in 1936, is in addition to the figure given above; it represents an open and flagrant disregard of law and property rights. It is hard to understand why the officials of the State of Pennsylvania do not enforce the laws against theft and brigandage, more so when the legitimate employees of the established producing proper-

UNDER the auspices of the Institute's Committee on Industrial Preparedness, a symposium was arranged for the Annual Meeting on the subject "Ores, Metals, and the War," with many well-known Government men and industrialists participating. Wilfred Sykes, president of the Inland Steel Co., of Chicago, presided, with C. K. Leith and Clyde Williams as vice-chairmen, Mr. Williams presiding over the latter part of the meeting. On the Auditorium stage in the Engineering Societies Building was a formidable corps of "experts," with an audience of several hundred to hear what they had to say and to ask questions.
