The reduction of a metal in an aqueous solution may be defined in terms of its source of electrons. In electrolytic reduction electrons flow as a result of applied voltages. In other systems electron sources are reducing gases or metals of lower electron affinity. In the latter two cases it is increasingly evident that reduction is electro-chemical in nature in that electrons flow through one or more conducting phases even though the discharge reactions may not be rate controlling. Electrode processes impmtant in reduction and metal deposition are reviewed and extended to contact reduction by precipitation (cementation) on mme electropositive metals. Contact reduc- tion Processes are ancient in origin and represent techniques which have had successful application for hundreds of years. In spite of this, little has been understood in terms of the dynamic properties of such systems or of important side reactions. In recent years an increasing amount of laboratory work has been carried out on contact reduction and an attempt is made here to summarize the important findings. Undoubtedly the interest aroused recently may be attributed to improved reactor design which has demonstrated on a commercial basis accelerated metal recovery by taking advantage of important kinetic and chemical parameters. of gold cyanide (Au(CN)-), respectively. The most common method for the reduction of ions in solution is by electrolysis. The impure metal is made the anode and the ions are reduced at the cathode. Leach liquors containing reducible ions may similarly be reduced electrolytically using an inert anode. The latter process is referred to as electrowinning. In recent years hydrogen has been used successfully as a gaseous re-Metallurgical Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). He was also a member of the Executive Board of the Metallurgical Society (AIME). In 1957 Dr. WADSWORTH was given the AlME Best Paper Award as coauthor of a paper on the roasting of sphalerite. On July 1, 1968 Dr. WADS-WORTH started an 24 month assignment in the Philippine Islands to assist in the development of graduate metallurgical engineering at the University of the Philippines. In addition to graduate teaching and curriculum development he will establish research programs to develop extraction processes for metals production in the islands. The project is supported by the Ford Foundation through Educational Projects, Incorporated.

History ILLINOIS has so recently attained the third place in the oil production of the United States that few realize its great importance, or are aware of its highly profitable character. Since 1907 Illinois has furnished about 15 per cent. of the United States output and about 10 per cent. of the world's production. The value of the output in 1913 is estimated at $30,000,000, of which about $20,000,000 is profit. The present prosperity dates from 1905, but efforts have been made since 1865 to develop production and geologists have been very sanguine as to its future for over 25 years. Had the oil operators been as confident as the geologists, the field would have been opened at least 30 years earlier. DIMENSION stone is a convenient term applied to stone sold in blocks or slabs of specified shapes and usually of specified sizes, as contrasted with crushed, broken and pulverized stone, discussed in another chapter. Dimension stone includes cut stone, rough building stone, ashlar, rubble, paving blocks, curbing and flagging. Riprap-large, irregular blocks used for shore protection-is classed more properly with crushed and broken stone. COMPOSITION, VARIETIES AND PROPERTIES Stones used as blocks or slabs are of many kinds. The principal varieties are granite, sandstone, limestone and marble. Slate is covered in another chapter. Granite is a visibly granular crystalline rock consisting essentially of feldspar, quartz, and mica or hornblende. Limestone consists essentially of calcium carbonate, with which may be associated certain impurities such as clay, sand, or iron oxide. Dolomites and magnesium limestones used as dimension stone are classed with the high- calcium limestones, as they are used in the same way. Marble is a crystalline form of limestone. Sandstone consists essentially of silica in the form of sand grains cemented together into a coherent mass. Although rock occurrences are numerous and widespread, the ex- acting requirements of use condemn all but a small fraction of them for commercial use as dimension stone. No deposit that has closely spaced cracks, lines of weakness, or joints can be so used because sound blocks of moderate to large size are demanded. Uniform texture and grain size, constant and attractive color, and freedom from impurities that may cause stains or deterioration usually are required also. Hardness is a variable property. Granites are as hard as or harder than steel while limestones and marbles may be scratched easily with a knife. The hardness of a sandstone depends upon the degree of cementation of the grains. Workability depends to a considerable extent on hardness, but the degree of hardness has little influence on use except when stones are subjected to severe abrasion, as on steps or floors. "Texture" as applied to stone relates to the arrangement, uniformity, and size of the constituent grains.

8.5-1. Bucket Line Dredge. INTRODUCTION. The modern bucket-line dredge for mining placer deposits is a combined floating excavating machine and a gravity concentration system. Material is excavated at the forward end by the buckets, elevated, washed and screened, concentrated for recovery of valuable mineral, and discharged off the stern as coarse and small fractions. The end product is a concentrate consisting either of the valuable mineral(s) and associated heavy minerals, which are taken to a treatment plant on shore; or in the case of gold, a clean amalgam ready for retorting. The bucket-line dredge may be adapted for purposes other than mining for valuable mineral by installing, in lieu of a concentrating system, machinery for pumping all of the solids ashore in a pulp, or for producing washed gravel in selected size fractions of which all or a selected fraction is pumped to disposal areas on shore or into side barges. The two principal types of bucket-line dredges designed for mining are: 1) those having an inclined belt conveyor stacker to discharge the coarse fraction of washed tailing well astern of the hull, and sluices to discharge the sand fraction (Fig. 8.5-1), and 2) those having only sluices for discharge of all tailing astern. Use of the latter type has been confined, with few exceptions, to mining cassiterite-bearing deposits in Malaysia and at sea off Indonesia. Small dredges having only flumes for washing and concentrating all material dug by the buckets have been used for mining shallow stream valley deposits. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT. The general arrangement of a modern bucket-line dredge for mining tin, with a primary concentrating plant on board, is shown in Fig. 8.5-2. The hull and superstructure of most dredges are fabricated of structural steel; wood also has been used for both small and large dredges with complete satisfaction. The equilibrium of boron nitride, gaseous nitrogen, and solute boron was investigated in Fe, Fe-C, and Fe-Si rnelts by the Sieverts technique. The free ellergy of dissociation of boron nitride, involving -the implied standard states, was evaluated in the range 1400" to 1600°C as: ?Fo = 38,000 - 23.5T, cal ber mole The solute-solute interaction coefficients eBB, ecB , and eg were determined as 0.058, 0.22, and 0.078, respectively. BORON is an important ingredient in some types of steel and cast iron. It was employed at a particularly high level, 0.01 wt pet, in the as-cast malleable iron "CentraSteel".1 In this material, the boron concentration was critical in order to assure graphite, and avoid primary cementite, in the as-cast structure. One possible function of the boron in this alloy was the nucleation of graphite through the agency of boron nitride, which, conceivably, precipitated from the melt during cooling. A research program was instituted to assess the validity of this proposed mechanism. The first undertaking, reported here, was a determination of the thermodynamic possibility of boron nitride precipitation. Data available in the literature on the activity coefficient of solute boron in iron-base melts are inadequate for the present purpose. The International Nickel Co., Ontario Div. mines, faced with rising production requirements, short labor supply, and ever increasing labor costs turned to mechanized mining for a solution to its problems. The degree of mechanization of ore removal has increased from 1966 with the purchase of the first diesel-powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machine to the present, with over 53% of all underground production handled by these units. Keeping pace with mechanized ore removal, there has been a parallel development of drilling equipment to complement the mucking units. This paper deals with the applications and economic advantages of mechanized drilling at the underground mines of Inco, Ontario Div. It covers the use of various types of mechanized drills in such mining methods as cut-and-fill, induced block caving, and sublevel caving. The economics of raise boring are also discussed.

The following notes were taken on a trip through northern Korea in the fall of 1910. We started with about 19 Korean ponies, and as many Koreans, from Shin Anju, on the railway from Seoul to Antung. We passed through the ancient walled city of Anju, and thence up the valley of the Anju river. We then crossed over to the north into the Kalsan drainage, thence over another divide to the Chasung river, and finally reached the old Korean copper-smelting camp of Tong Jom— in all a distance by trail of about 200 miles. The return trip was made with ponies to Mampochin on the Yalu river, and thence' down the river in a junk to Antung. The route of travel is shown on the sketch map, Fig. 1.

Perhaps no other mineral commodity in this volume has as many uses as limestone and dolomite. These carbonate rocks are the basic building blocks of the construction industry, the material from which aggregate, cement, lime, and building stone are made. Carbonate rocks, and their derived products, are used as fluxes, glass raw material, refractories, fillers, abrasives, soil conditioners, ingredients in a host of chemical processes, and much more. Although the use of limestone and dolomite goes back before recorded history, new uses and products are continually being found. Carbonate rocks form about 15% of the earth's sedimentary crust and are widely available for exploitation. Found extensively on all continents, they are quarried and mined from formations that range in age from Precambrian to Recent. Reserves of carbonate rock are large and will last indefinitely, although high-purity deposits may be absent or have limited avail- ability in certain areas. Limestone and dolomite are so useful and so abundant that in 1972 more than 690 million tons were produced in the United States. In fact, about 75% of all stone quarried or mined in the United States was carbonate rock. Sand and gravel was the only mineral commodity produced in greater quantity. In this chapter we have sought to provide the general reader an overview of carbonate rocks, their composition, distribution, production, and uses, with emphasis on developments since 1960. In doing so we borrowed extensively from our recent report on the applied geology of limestone and dolomite (Rooney and Carr, 1971). The literature on the limestone and dolomite resources of the United States and Canada is so vast and diverse that one can easily become mired down in print. We tried to list those references that are easily accessible and that provide the economic geologist with a starting point for more intensive study. The table listing selected references on limestone and dolomite resources in Canada and the United States reflects our attempt to be selective rather than exhaustive and to direct the reader to the best sources of detailed information.

The number of installations of propeller mine fans completed during the years of 1936 and 1937 is evidence of the increasing popularity of the propeller fan with the American mining industry. During the period from 1931 to 1936, there were several different low-pressure, low-efficiency propeller fans available, which filled a definite need in replacing inefficient centrifugal fans operated at comparatively low pressure by means of purchased power. Since 1936, however, the trend toward the propeller fan has greatly increased, as propeller fans are now available practically without pressure limitations and capable of efficiencies high enough to warrant replacement of efficient centrifugal fans in many instances. Few manufacturers of propeller mine fans base their fan-operating characteristics upon similar test methods, primarily because of inadequate facilities for testing in the factory and the need of a test code incorporating a calibrated duct or nozzle that makes possible the testing of large propeller fans quickly, accurately and without prohibitive expense and space requirements. As a result, fan manufacturers have resorted to various methods for testing large propeller fans in the factory, and different yardsticks have produced uncomparable and often inaccurate performance data. It is the purpose of this paper to describe and discuss in detail the test procedure of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co., which has been proved both accurate and practical. Fig. 1 shows a plan, a side elevation and two end elevations of the test duct with a propeller fan of the exhaust type in place. Testing propeller fans exhausting permits greater accuracy than testing these fans blowing, because in the former uniform flow conditions are more easily established at Pitot tube stations where fan pressure and air-volume measurements are desired. Any residual rotation remaining in the air discharged from a propeller fan blowing into a test duct must be removed before an attempt is made to obtain accurate pressure and volume readings. Although various devices for straightening the air may be placed between the blowing fan and the volume-measuring station without resulting complications, uniform flow so obtained at the pressure-measuring station necessitates corrective calculations to compensate for duct resistance

The Henderson mine uses the panel caving method to extract molybdenum ore from a deep ore body in an igneous intrusive. Research into caving mechanics and its related problems has yielded fundamental relationships concerning the response of a stressed rock mass to the caving method. The relationships studied through a variety of programs include the following: the evaluation of time and distance related stress fields; the monitoring of the deformation of underground openings and the design implications; ground and mining sequence classifications compared to past support requirements; the response of finite rock masses to zones of high stress concentrations; the evaluation of the subsidence induced by caving; and the microseismic monitoring of cave growth. The cumulative objective of this research is to better understand, predict, and control rock mass response.

Production of oil within the state of Pennsylvania in 1940 was slightly more than the 1939 total, and this increase was due entirely to the new flush Music Mountain field south and west of the main Bradford pool. The influence and magnitude of Music Mountain production will be separately described, inasmuch as it is an important producing unit within the state. Production Bradford Field The production listed herein for Bradford field includes only the part of the field that is within the state of Pennsylvania. Approximately 4000 bbl. per day, or 10 per cent of the total Production of Bradford field comes from Cattaraugus County, New York, and should properly be attributed to production obtained within the New York state area, although locally and economically the Bradford field, situated both in New York State and Pennsylvania, is included as a single statistical unit. The 1940 average production in the Bradford field was 34,831 bbl. per day, as compared with a daily average in 1939 of 35,340 bbl., or a decrease from 1939 of 509 bbl. per day. The decrease in production from the Pennsylvania portion of the Bradford field would have been more pronounced if a portion of the crude from the Music Mountain field were not included with the statistics for Bradford field. The decline can be attributed largely to the fact that more properties of lower average recovery were being drilled in 1939 and 1940 than in previous years, and apparently a subnormal amount of drilling occurred in 1938 and 1939, when about 2100 wells were drilled each year. The full effect of the 1940 drilling is not felt immediately and undoubtedly will affect the producing period of 1941. It appears probable that the water-flood area in the Bradford field has reached a definite peak unless some unusual economic condition should cause abnormal prices and an excessive rate of development such as occurred in 1936 and 1937. Virtually all of the production in the Bradford field was obtained by water-flooding methods, as natural or stripper wells are uneconomical and air and gas repressuring have not proved so efficient as water-flooding as a secondary recovery method. Central and Southern Pennsylvania Central and southern Pennsylvania produced a total of 4,604,763 bbl. of oil during the calendar year of 1940; that is, an increase over the 1939 total of 166,728 bbl. The daily average production was 12,581 bbl., or an increase over 1939 of 422 bbl. per day. Table I includes the total oil production for the state of Pennsylvania for the years 1937 to 1940, inclusive, and the daily average for each of these years. The addition of 0.5 wt pct Cu to Zr-2.5 Cb alloy increases the as -quenched hardness of the hexagonal martensitic a' phase, produced by water-quenching bccß-Zr phase, by about 35 pct. This strengthening has been attributed to the solid -solution hardening of the matrix. On aging ternary martensite, a' phase reverts to equilibrium a and Zr2Cu and ß-Cb precipitate out, mainly at the twin and grain boundaries, causing a secondary hardening of the matrix. COLD-worked Zircaloy-2 pressure tubes have been in use in power reactors for a considerable period of time. The search for a better material led to the development of Zr-2.5 wt pct Cb alloy which in the quench-aged condition develops 50 pct more strength than that of cold-worked Zircaloy-2, however, its corrosion resistance in water and steam in the temperature range of 316" to 400°C, in absence of neutron flux, is inferior to that of zircaloy-2.' Work carried out by Ells et al.1 and Dalgaard2 has shown that the corrosion properties of Zr-2.5 wt pct Cb alloy can be considerably improved by the ternary addition of 0.5 wt pct Cu. This paper is concerned with the effect of 0.5 wt pct Cu on the formation of martensitic a and its aging characteristics in a Zr-2.5 wt pct Cb alloy. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Zr-2.5 Cb-0.5 Cu (referred to as the ternary alloy) and Zr-2.5 Cb (referred to as the binary alloy) alloys, supplied by the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories of the AECL were used. The detailed chemical analysis is given in Table I. Cold rolling and swagging with frequent intermediate anneal of 1000°C were used for the initial fabrication of the alloys. All the heat treatments were carried out after the specimens were wrapped in zirconium foils and encapsulated in silica tubes under a vacuum of 5 x 10-6 mm of Hg. For optical metallography and hardness measurements specimens were mechanically and then chemically polished in a 45 pct HNOj, 45 pct HzO, and 10 pct HF solution. Hardness was measured on a Vickers hardness tester using a 10-kg load. For each specimen at least fifteen indentations were made in order to obtain a representative value. The phase identification and structural analysis were carried out using X-rays and electron diffraction techniques. Wires of 1.5 mm diam reduced to 0.12 mm diam by chemical etching were used for making Debye-Scherrer powder patterns using Cu Ka radiation in a 114.6 mm diam camera. Carbon extraction replicas were prepared by etching the specimens, after depositing a layer of carbon on the metallographic specimen, in one part HF and thirty parts ethyl alcohol. Thin films were prepared by electropolishing heat-treated 3/4 by 1/2 by 0.005 in. thick strips using a modified Bollman-Window technique. The 10 pct perchloric acid-90 pct methyl alcohol bath was kept at -50°C and polishing was done at 5 to 10 V. The thinned specimens were washed in ethyl alcohol at -30º to -40°C and dried between filter papers. Replicas and thin films were examined in a Phillips 300 G electron microscope. For resistivity measurements thin strip specimens 0.02 by 0.3 by 10.0 cm long were used. The potential leads were spot welded to the specimens in order to maintain a fixed length for the initial and the final resistivity measurements. The resistivity was measured by a Kelvin bridge in a temperature controlled room. The temperature was maintained at 72º ±1°F and the accuracy of the resistivity measurements was 0.03 µa-cm. RESULTS As-Quenched Structures. In order to produce a homogeneous matrix to study the precipitation reaction the solution-treatments of both the alloys were carried out in the -field region. From the Zr-Cb phase diagram due to Lundin and cox3 ß/a + ß phase boundary for Zr-2.5 wt pct Cb alloy is 820°C. Ells et al.1 have reported this boundary for Zr-2.5 Cb alloy containing 1100 ppm 0 to be at 920°C. Also, the addition of 0.5 wt pct Cu reduces this temperature by 50°C. Therefore, the solution-treatments were carried out at 1000°C to ensure that the alloys were in ß-phase region. The soaking time was 1 hr and the specimens were water-quenched. The as-quenched hardness of the binary alloy was 245 Vpn whereas, that of the ternary alloy was 330 Vpn. The X-ray diffraction studies indicated that the as-quenched structure of both the alloys consists of martensitic hexagonal phase a', with a c/a ratio of 1.591, and some retained ß-Zr. The presence of a' phase was further confirmed by thin film electron microscopy. Electron micrographs of typical ß-quenched structures of the ternary and the binary alloys are shown in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. Fig. 3 shows the diffraction pattern from an area similar to that shown in Fig. 1. Although, the as-quenched hardness of the ternary alloy is about 35 pct greater than that of the binary alloy, the structure of both the alloys seems to be the same. The matrix of both alloys is heavily twinned and shows very few dislocations. Furthermore, there is no evidence of any precipitation taking place in either of the two specimens during quenching from the solution-treatment temperature. Aging Behavior of Martensitic a'. The mine hoisting equipment that is selected and installed at a mine is the lifeline of the mine, and therefore the proper selection of equipment will save a lot of time and money during the life of the mine. Various types of mine hoist designs &e available today, and each has their advantages and disadvantages. Double Drum Hoists, Single Drum Hoists, Friction Hoists and various special designs of these are available but should only be used on applications where they are suitable. There have been several new drive systems for mine hoists which have come into the picture in the last ten years, and they in turn must be evaluated along with the existing drive systems for each hoist application. It does not make sense to properly select the hoist mechanicals, and then have a drive system that turns out to be a bottleneck. This paper will attempt to cover the above noted systems - both the hoist selection and hoist drive system that will provide the mine with a reliable and economical hoisting system. I. Mine Hoist Types There are two basic types of mine hoists available in the world today: the drum hoist on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe), which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Following is a general outline of each type of hoist and the hoisting applications that they are suitable for. First let us consider the simple Single Drum Hoist. As a Service or Production Hoist with cage or skip in balance with a counterweight, a Single Drum Hoist can efficiently service one or more levels since the location of the counterweight at anytime is not important. As a Production Hoist with skips in balance the Single Drum Hoist is best used for single level hoisting. All rope adjustments for proper spotting must be done manually for the Single Drum Hoist. This has to be done periodically to compensate for rope stretch. A variation of the Single Drum Hoist is the divided drum hoist. If multi-layer winding is necessary the Single Drum Hoist must have a divider to allow a separate compartment for each rope. If a counterweight is used with a divided drum application the counterweight rope can be wound on a smaller diameter (Figure 2). Consequently, it moves a lesser distance than the main conveyance and rope adjustment problems are reduced.

A simple correlation is presented for the prediction of saturation pressures in condensate-gas and volatile-oil mixtures. Saturation pressure is related directly to the composition of the mixture with the aid of two generalized composition characteristics, B, the molal average boiling point, and W, the modified weight average equivalent molecular weight. The need for hydrocarbon equilibrium constants is entirely eliminated. Only the values of the two conlposition parameters need be obtained, and these are calculated in a simple and reproducible manner from the stream analysis of the mixture and the ASTM distillation for the heavy ends. The correlation is given .in the form of a set of 14 working charts in which saturation pressures, either retrograde dew points or bubble points, are plotted cs temperature, forming partial phase envelopes for mixtures having discrete values of the composition parameters, B and Wul. A locus of critical states on each chart intersects the partial phase envelopes, distinguishing retrograde dew point pressures from bubble pressures. A comparison Between experimental and predicted saturation pressures reveals that: the probable error of the predicted values, when considering the data as a whole (214 experimental points), is five per cent; for high gasjoil ratio condensate fluids (approximately 40.000 or more cu ft/bbl) the probable error is about 8 per cent. In either case, however, the probable error is comparable with the overall uncertainty of the data from which the correlation is derived. INTRODUCTION There is a present need for a simplified, yet reasonably accurate method for predicting upper phase boundaries of reservoir fluids. In the case of high gas/oil ratio fluids, namely the so-called highly volatile oils and the condensate gases, no simple method, accurate within 5 to 10 per cent, is now available by which bubble point and retrograde dew point pressures may be predicted. In order to calculate the upper phase boundary of a volatile reservoir fluid, using correlations now available, it is necessary to find and employ the proper K-values (equilibrium volatility ratios of the hydrocarbons in that fluid). This process of finding the Proper K-values usually involves a double trial and error computation. Since the K-values are in themselves dependent upon the composition of the fluid, their use in the calculation of a saturation pressure actually represents an unnecessary complication. The correlation described in this paper relates saturation pressure directly to the stream composition, entirely eliminating the need for K-values. The only data required to calculate the Stream composition are obtained from the customary low temperature fractional analyses of separator gas and liquidt and from the ASTM distillation of the c,+ fraction of the separator liquid. A considerable simplification in the procedure for predicting saturation pressures is thereby effected without significant loss in accuracy. BASIS FOR A CORRELATION Empirical relationships between the saturation pressure and the composition of the fluid in question have already been partially explored by one of the authors.V n particular, a relationship between the critical pressure for a hydrocarbon mixture and its composition was developed. The critical pressure is in reality a saturation pressure, as it repregents a limiting case either of a dew point or of a buhhle point pressure for any given mixture. It was found that the critical pressure may be correlated as a function of two generalized composition characteristics or variables. IN the manufacture of rimming steel-which constitutes the bulk of the world's production of mild steel-the factors that determine the quality of the product are very closely associated with the pouring and solidification of the steel in the ingot mold. The behavior of the metal in the mold is, on the one hand, the resultant of the complex processes through which the liquid metal has passed, and, on the other, it is an indication of the probable behavior of the ingot during subsequent rolling and finishing operations. A detailed study of the mechanism of solidifica-tion of rimming ingots ought to yield information that will be useful iii controlling the structure of the ingot and the quality of the ultimate product. The first step in such a study is to determine the rate at which the solid shell of the ingot forms from the liquid metal in the mold. A knowledge of the rate of solidification will make it possible to correlate observations of rimming action and gas evolution with studies of the structure, porosity, and segregation within the ingot. Thus, if the metal in the mold is observed to fall, let us say one minute after pouring, the portion of the structure associated with this fall will lie located in the part of the ingot that is solidifying at that particular moment. The knowledge that the ingot solidifies to a depth of ¾ in. in the first minute enables us to locate in the ingot the structural features corresponding to the observed fall. Conversely, the blowhole condition associated with a rising or growing ingot will be found in the part of the ingot that is solidifying at the time the phenomenon occurs. The time required for the complete solidification of an ingot has long been a matter of speculation. It is of considerable practical importance in connection with charging and heating in the soaking pits. Too rapid handling of the ingot through heating and rolling processes has been thought to be associated-with excessive pipe and other internal defects, so that a further object of this investigation was to attempt to estimate the time required for complete solidification, or the minimum practical time within which the subsequent operations can be performed with the minimum hazard.

The isothermal formation of martensite at subzero temperatures has been studied in an austenitic stainless steel. The amount of martensite formed isothermally in a given time was found to follow a C-curve behavior with decreasing temperature. Since isothermal rnartensitic transformation occurs at temperatures above the true M. temperature of the olloy, the observed M. temperature is dependent on the cooling rate. It is believed that a general martensite theory must include the basic concepts of the strain embryo theory, and also the important role of thermal fluctuations. UNTIL recently the isothermal component of the martensitic transformation had been considered as a trivial effect in theoretical considerations of this type of transformation. One of the postulates used in defining a martensitic transformation was that the reaction was temperature dependent but not time dependent. Cohen and his associates1'2 were the first to report the isothermal formation of mar-tensite. They obsel-ved the time dependency of the martensite reaction at room temperature in plain carbon steels and certain tool steels. They found that a small amount of additional transformation occurred after the specimen reached the quenching temperature and that the rate of this isothermal transformation decreased rapidly with time. These authors considered this phenomenon to be a "tailing-off" of the main athermal reaction. Kurdjumov and MaksimovaL 5 studied the isothermal formation of martensite at subatmospheric temperatures in steels containing 0.6 pct C-6 pct Mn, 1.6 pct C, and in an iron-base alloy containing 23 pct Ni and 3.4 pct Mn. In each case it was found that both the initial rate and the total amount of isothermal transformation exhibited sharp maxima with decreasing temperature. They stated that it was possible to completely suppress the martensitic transformation in the 0.6 pct C-6 pct Mn steel by drastic quenching in liquid nitrogen. They interpreted their results in terms of a thermally activated process. The maximum in the rate of nucleation vs. temperature curve was assumed to be a result of the temperature dependence of the rate of growth of the martensite plates. It has been demonstrated," however, that martensite plates can form with great rapidity even at temperatures approaching absolute zero. In addition," attempts to confirm the reported suppression of the martensitic transformation by rapid cooling of a 0.6 pct C-6 pct Mn steel have proved unsuccessful. On this basis, and on other theoretical grounds, the validity of some of Kurd-jumov's results and conclusions is open to serious question. Cohen, Machlin, and Paranjpe' have proposed a theory of martensite formation based on the nucleation of strain embryos and a growth mechanism involving cooperative atomic displacements. According to this theory thermal fluctuations can make a strain embryo supercritical and thereby produce martensite isothermally. Das Gupta and Lement' have investigated the isothermal formation of martensite in a 17 pct Cr-0.7 pct C steel at temperatures below the ambient. They found that partial suppression of the martensitic reaction occurred on quenching into liquid nitrogen. That part of the reaction which can be suppressed is taken to correspond to the isothermal rather than the athermal part of the rnartensitic transformation. The initial rate of isothermal transformation for this steel was found to go through a maximum with decreasing temperature. This is in conformity with the findings of Kurdjumov and Maksimova for the steels used in their investigation. Das Gupta and Lement conclude that isothermal martensite formation occurs by the nucleation of new plates and is always preceded by some athermal transformation. An iron-base alloy containing 14 pct Cr-9 pct Ni was used in this investigation to study further the kinetics of the austenite to martensite transforma-

HISTORY IT is not known when kaolin mining was first begun in North Carolina. Evidence, in the form of excavations and primitive tools, indicates that some of the deposits were worked in prehistoric times. It has been suggested that the prehistoric mining was for mica, but the workings were all in altered or partly altered pegmatite material and the dumps do not represent the amount of material removed. Some of the early openings may have been made in search of kaolin or semi-kaolinized feldspar which was sold to English1 traders along the coast and used in some of the early English porcelains. In 1944,2 an application was made for an English patent to produce porcelain from an earthy mixture obtained from the Cherokee Nation in North America. It is well established, however, that the occurrence of kaolin in western North Carolina was known in England by 1767. In that year, Josiah Wedgewood sent T. Griffiths3,4 to what is now Macon County, North Carolina, to secure a supply of kaolin for use in England. Griffiths diary, now in Etruria Museum, Stokes-on-Trent, contains a most interesting account of his experience. Kaolin was discovered at St. Austell, England, shortly after the voyage of Griffiths, which probably accounts for the lack of further interest in American kaolin. Between 1767 and 1888, there are no records of kaolin mining in North Carolina. In the latter year, however, mining was begun near Webster, Jackson County, and, in the intervening period, has become an important industry. For some 20 years, kaolin mining was carried on chiefly in Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties. About 1904, it was begun in the Spruce Pine district and for the past 20 years most of the kaolin mined in the State has come from Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties. DISTRIBUTION The kaolins of North Carolina are limited in occurrence to the Piedmont Plateau and Appalachian Mountain area of the State. While kaolins are widespread in the Piedmont Plateau, having been prospected for in Rutherford, Cleveland, Gaston, Granville, Lincoln, Catawba, Iredell, Richmond, Moore, Randolph, and Montgomery Counties, the production from that area has never been important. The known deposits of commercial importance are limited entirely to the mountain area of the State. While kaolins occur widely distributed throughout the mountain area and have been prospected for in many counties of that area, commercial production has come chiefly from two districts. One of these includes Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Haywood Counties. The other includes Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties.
