The use of cereal food materials as lubricants was investigated in an attempt to develop nonpolluting lubricants. Suspensions of wheat flour in water and other types of cereal food lubricants were prepared and their friction coefficients measured. The results indicate that a cereal food lubricant containing 30% lipids, 2% proteins, 60% carbohydrates and 0.6% calcium carbonates has the lowest friction coefficient for a sheet (cpTi-1). As example applications, the lubricant was tested with a forming press and a screw-fastening device. In both applications the cereal food lubricant performed relatively well in comparison to conventional lubricants and thereby has potential for practical applications.

In this study, the fusion zone microstructure of tungsten inert gas weld of a directionally solidified NhAl-base alloy was examined by the standard metallographic techniques involving the use of optical, analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopes equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer. Fusion zone cracking was observed to be closely associated with interdendritic secondary solidification microconstituents identified as consisting of y, y' and NiMo (Y) phases. Depression of solidification temperature to the terminal ternary eutectic reaction temperature of the system during cooling is suggested as an important factor contributing to the fusion zone cracking.

The concept of a high pressure liquid jet mill with highly unsteady flow, has been developed and recently patented by Cornerstone Technologies LLC (CsT), for the purpose of micron and sub-micron particle production. The mill accepts feed sizes up to 15mm for some materials and is capable of sub-micron production. Successful material range from precious metals such as silver and palladium to dielectric components and substrates such as Barium Titanate slips, zirconia, titania and silica. The process has also succeeded in adequately reducing the size of materials for both composite and coating uses such as anthracite coal, graphite, chrome metal, wollastonite and more than 100 others. A unique design approach has been taken to highly maximize the energy flux in the mill’s chambers to create extremely high turbulence and destructive cavitation. This is assisted by shock waves, which cause particles to undergo ultra high frequency pressure pulsations, high frequency collisions and then abrasion, shattering, hydro-wedging, and cleaving. Due to these extreme properties the processing occurs in just fractions of a second allowing throughputs up to 1000 kg/h on a machine that would fit inside a 60 cm box. The technical solution and technological advance, as well as the environmental and economic benefits indicate rapid and wide spread acceptance of high-pressure liquid jet milling in modern industry.

Injury experience in the coal-mining industry was worse in 1965 as both the frequency and severity rates of injuries increased 2 and 6 percent, respectively, over comparable data for 1966 (tables 1-8). The retrogression in the safety record during; 1965 resulted frog the less favorable record at bituminous-coal mines, which more than offset the improved injury experience at anthracite mines. The 259 fatal and 11,138 nonfatal injuries occurred at a rate of 45.77 per million man-hours of exposure and resulted in a severity rate of 8,960 days lost per million man-hours. Although the number of fatalities was the second lowest annual total in the recorded history, it was 17 higher than in 1964. At anthracite operations the total of 6 fatalities in 1965 was the lowest annual figure in statistical history. The annual numbers of nonfatal injuries at ill coal mines and the resulting rates of occurrence have varied little in the past 5 years (table 1). The total days lost from all injuries rose from 2.1.3 million in 19b4 to 2.23 million in 1965 (table 5). Fatal and permanent total injuries, with a standard time charge of 6,000 days each, accounted for 1,650,000 days; Permanent partial injuries, 191,932 clays; and temporary total disabilities, 383,911 days. The severity rate for fatal injuries was 6,241, 8 percent higher than in 1964, and the nonfatal severity rate of 2,718 days lost per million man-hours was 2 percent higher than in the preceding year. The average severity of permanent partial injuries ire; 730, or 48 days fewer per injury than in 1964. The average days lost for each temporary total injury was 36 days in each year.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system that permits the "soft" soldering of aluminum and aluminum alloys with standard tin-lead solders. The method employs application of a thin nickel-copper-alloy coating to the substrate, which enables the tin-lead solders to wet readily and spread over the areas to be joined. With conventional technology, aluminum and aluminum alloys are extremely difficult to solder because tenacious surface oxide films prevent wetting. With the Bureau-developed method, the aluminum substrate is mechanically or chemically cleaned to facilitate bonding to a minute layer of zinc that is subsequently applied with an electroless zincate solution. The nickel-copper-alloy (30 to 70 pct Ni) coating is then applied electrolytically over the zinc, using immersion cell or brush-coating techniques. Development of acetate electrolytes has permitted deposition of the proper alloy coatings. The coated areas can then be readily joined with conventional tin-lead solders and fluxes. The joints so formed are ductile, strong, and relatively corrosion resistant, and exhibit strengths equivalent to those formed on copper and brass when the same solders and fluxes are used. The method has also been employed to soft-solder magnesium alloys.

India’s steel vision of 2030 requires a huge amount of quality iron ore. The utilization of low-grade iron ores such as banded iron ores will play an important role to achieve the same production. The absence of alumina impurities in the banded hematite jasper (BHJ) ore provides it an edge over other low-grade iron ores. The conventional beneficiation techniques such as magnetic separation and washing were found to be ineffective to produce suitable feed (Fe ~ 60%) for the blast furnace. It was found that microwave exposure provides significant enrichment to the low-grade iron ore and can be used as a pretreatment step in the beneficiation of similar low-grade iron ores. The above study reveals that hematite phase is susceptible to microwave exposure which enhances the separation of iron values from impurities. Under optimum conditions, an iron-enriched concentrate with 61% Fe, 85% Fe recovery at 50% yield can be achieved from BHJ feed ~ 38% Fe. The pretreatment process for BHJ beneficiation includes only microwave exposure without any chemical additive and may prove economical and industrially feasible.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses recent applications of water in-fusion technology to control dust in U.S coal mines and presents recommended guidelines for determining coal seam infusibility. The techniques required to use water infusion are presented in detail. A Bureau case study indicated that water infusion reduced dust levels by 68 pct along a longwall plow face, bringing this section into compliance with the Z.0-mg/m3 Federal dust standard. Similar studies conducted by Occidental Research Corp. under a Bureau contract show water infusion at two longwall double-drum shearer operations produced dust reductions ranging from 38 to 50 pct. Water infusion was found to be cost effective, aver-aging 5 cents per ton.

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June) 1896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to the works, the fuewoodbeing of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides). The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by, many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall, which averages about 110 in per annum. In longwall coal mines, estimation of roof strata condition, sequence of loading, and supporting requirements are of a high degree of importance, and they are directly related to production and safety. Also, a prediction of the initial caving distance is rather complicated to calculate, because there are many parameters that effect caving process?roof and floor strata conditions, thickness of immediate roof, depth of cover, excavation geometry, and magnitude, and direction of principal stresses. This paper presents the results of 3D numerical modeling of the initial caving mechanism using the finite difference code FLAC3D at the E1 longwall panel of the Parvade 1 underground mine located in the Tabas area in the central part of Iran. The initial caving distance obtained was 10.4 m. Also, the results of numerical modeling have been compared to the analytical methods, such as Peng?s method. The results show good agreement with each other.

Failure of in-pit overburden dumps in open-pit coal mines causes debris to flow toward the active working face, threatening the safety of people and equipment. The evaluation of the potential mobility of failing mass will aid in hazard mitigation associated with unwarranted dump failure. The potential mobility is shown by mobility ratio (ratio of total drop between debris flow's initial and final deposition points to total travel distance) and runout characteristics. In light of above, a laboratoryscale debris flow flume was developed to investigate the effect of material gradation and slope angle on runout characteristics and mobility ratio. The total mass of experimental debris mix (Q) is fixed at 30 kg with 20% water content. Experiments at three different slope angles (30°, 35°, and 40°) demonstrate that increasing the proportion of fines in the experimental mix increases runout characteristics while decreasing the mobility ratio. The length and area of the runout decrease as the slope angle increases, while the mobility ratio increases. There is a positive correlation between d50 and runout characteristics at a fines content of 0.1Q, but a negative correlation at a fines content of 0.2Q and 0.3Q. Conversely, there is a negative correlation between d50 and mobility ratio for fines content of 0.1Q, but a positive correlation exists for fines content of 0.2Q and 0.3Q. A new index called the fine-to-coarse (F/C) ratio is used to identify the critical value of fines and coarse proportion that causes a transition from dry granular flow to fluidized debris flow.

Drilling and blasting near residential or business inhabited areas may expose people to blast induced vibration. Many of these people have never been exposed to blast vibration and airblast which can cause a variety of reactions ranging from indifference to anger. Blasting contractors seeking to minimize the impact of blasting to neighbors of the project will plan for a public relation plan which begins at bid time. The public relations plan cost will be included in their proposal and a variety of methods may be included including, door to door contact, letters, pamphlets, telephone calls, and the use of an independent consultant to conduct a pre-blast survey. By raising the awareness of neighbors to a blasting project the blasting contractor may reduce the anxiety and stress of unannounced blasting vibration and airblast. This helps everyone associated with the project from the project owner(s) to the blasting contractor.

MANY changes were made in the methods and equipment used in the mining of pebble phosphate rock in the generation immediately preceding the present World War and it would be extremely interesting to note the improvements that will be made during the next generation. Literally, much water has gone over the dam since the days when we used local cordwood for generating steam and drying pebble phosphate rock. belt-driven centrifugal pumps operated by steam engines. and floating dipper or centrifugal dredges; when we removed overburden by small steam shovels and transported it by dinkey locomotives and six-yard cars; when washing machinery was installed on wooden structures the washers being replaced every four to six years. Those were the days when men were plentiful, and 47 different mining companies were selling their products, based on .decidedly meager information; and. like so many mining operations, little thought was given to conservation. With ever-increasing global demand for mineral resources, numerous mines are moving towards developing and mining deeper, more complex and lower grade ore bodies. In many cases, mass mining methods (e.g. block caving) are being considered to deal with deeper, lower grade deposits. The body of practical knowledge, however, related to the impacts mass mining methods have on the surface environment in terms of rock mass response, subsidence, etc., is limited, imposing both economic risks to the mine and safety risks to mine personnel. This paper presents the framework for and preliminary results from a large collaborative research initiative between Diavik Diamond Mines, Rio Tinto, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU). The project involves the integration of available subsidence, rock mass, mine operation and monitoring data, together with the advanced application of combined finite/discrete-element modelling codes capable of simulating fracture behaviour, cave propagation and surface subsidence above block cave mines. The main objective of this work is to develop advanced numerical modelling methods to characterize complex rock mass behaviour above block cave mines. The research will also include the study of rock deformation mechanisms associated with the transition from surface to underground mining and the potential interaction between simultaneous open-pit and underground mining operations.
