"Reducing the improvement ratio of ground improvement is an extremely efficient way to reduce the construction cost and construction period of mitigation measures for soft ground. The Arch Action Low Improvement Ratio Cement Column (ALiCC Method) is one method for this, and it is being increasingly applied to sites. This method enables us to rationally evaluate the embankment loads that are acting on cement improved soil columns and unimproved ground, by considering the arch action generated in the embankments and from there thusly allocate improved soil columns in spans of a greater distance than those needed for conventional methods. As a result, it serves to reduce construction costs and the construction period, while also minimizing the settling of the embankment and differential settlement, by placing numerous improved soil columns in the ground immediately beneath the embankment at equidistant intervals. In this report, we give a basic overview of the ALiCC Method, report typical construction results from real life cases that have been carried out, and make comparisons with other construction methods in order to report on the effectiveness of this design method.OVERVIEW OF ARCH ACTION LOW IMPROVEMENT RATIO CEMENT COLUMN (ALiCC) METHODIn the area of mitigation measures for soft ground, a significant role is played by ground improvements using improved materials such as cement. For this reason, a reduction in construction costs and construction period required for ground improvements has become of greater importance. The Public Works Research Institute carried out joint research with Kiso-Jiban Consultants Co. Ltd., Kitac Co. Ltd., and Fudo Tetra Co. Ltd. over a period from 1998 through 2002, and, from that, developed the ""Arch Action Low Improvement Ratio Cement Column Method"" (hereinafter referred to as the ""ALiCC Method"") that enables ground improvement with a lower improvement ratio (the improved area ratio is approx. 10% to 30%) than is required for conventional methods, while also ensuring stabilization and minimizing the settling of embankments.In the area of mitigation methods for soft ground by deep mixing, the dominant method until now has been that (50% or more of improvement ratio) shown in Fig. 1. This method comprehensively improves the area under the face of the slopes of both sides of the embankment. This is based on the calculated stability against rotational slip, which states, ""the most effective way to ensure the stabilization of the embankment environment is to carry out improvements of the area under the face of the slope."" Therefore, for the area under the face of the slope, ground improvement by deep mixing was done, and for the soft ground in the area under the middle part of the embankment, accelerated consolidation methods (hereinafter referred to as ""conventional method"") such as sand draining method and paper draining method were used. Mitigation measures that combine these improvement methods have also been mainstream for a long period of time and are used to prevent side deformation around the embankment. However, there have been some problems that have occurred, such as a situation where consolidation settling occurs in the center area under the embankment where no improvement had been carried out. This phenomenon leads to a situation in which the improved soil columns in the area under the face the of slope are pushed to the outside, which results in side deformation occurring around the area of the embankment, and additionally the occurrence of a step due to a situation of differential settlement between the improved ground and the consolidation advancing part, which results in cracks in the embankment."

Maximising ore tonnage at a selected target grade requires that appropriate ore identification criteria be established. Iron ore mining block models may consist of many millions of estimated blocks, each block corresponding to the selective mining unit (SMU), with grade interpolated from drill hole data. Each block can be considered as a potential ore candidate. Analysis of such a huge database can require large computational resources, especially for sensitivity analysis requiring multiple computations. However, an alternative streamlined approach is possible, where the data are compressed to an appropriately smaller and representative subset. The consequent data reduction not only makes it feasible to consider the simultaneous analysis of multiple pits but also considerably speeds up computation, enabling sensitivity analysis of the potential ore tonnage as a function of the required grade. Ore identification criteria can be successfully established using appropriately chosen reduced data comprising less than one per cent of the blocks. The ore identified is virtually indistinguishable in tonnage and grade from the ore that would be selected using the entire block model.Two methods of data reduction are tested: sampling (using a proportion of unaltered blocks) and binning (consolidating groups of blocks to a single average grade). The source blocks are first sorted (such as by location, analyte grade, principal component score, random order or value) before sampling or binning. In this study, the sorting options considered were by location and Fe grade. The effectiveness of each method was evaluated using the block model subsets to select the maximum tonnage of ore at a specified target grade. Block model data from an anonymous Pilbara iron ore project with about one million blocks averaging 1.132 kt were used. The blocks are from multiple resource models, to be blended to a single product. Sampling is shown to be superior to binning because sampling preserves the full variability while binning, although matching the mean block grades reduces their variability.It was found that the appropriately sampled data sets (sorted by location) gave results virtually identical to the results for the full data set, even when the samples comprised less than one per cent of the original blocks. The reduction in computer time to identify maximum tonnage at a specified grade was approximately proportional to the sample percentage. The increase in computation speed greatly facilitated sensitivity analysis. A sampled data set of one-eighth the total block model was used to investigate the effects of changing each of the component grades around the original grade specification. The results of this sensitivity analysis are discussed, and illustrate the potential benefit of carrying out sensitivity analysis in determining feasible and marketable product grades.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. El primer método es aplicable en aquellos casos donde las rocas de caja sean consistentes y que la veta uniforme que no sea arcillosa, mientras que el segundo, es factible en aquellos blocks donde las rocas de caja sean poco consistentes. En este sentido, el objetivo del texto es señalar la factibilidad de ambos métodos sobre diversos aspectos de carácter técnico-económico, considerando que el ancho de la explotación sea de 0.94 m, para que la utilidad sea más provechosa.

"The concept of risk is well established in the mining industry. It is acknowledged when estimates of reserves are expressed as proven or probable, when mining and metallurgical recoveries are applied to the ore, and when contingencies are added to costs. However, it is difficult to provide a quantitative assessment of risk. The significant sources of risk in a mineral project and how these are addressed in project evaluations are discussed. The discount rate is examined as a fundamental means of reflecting risk in discounted cash flow evaluations. Current industry practice is discussed, and a methodology for the analysis of risk levels is proposed that assesses the constituent components of the discount rate: real interest, mineral project risks, and country risk.IntroductionThis paper examines the components of the discounted cash flow discount rate and proposes a method of estimating project-specific discount rates. The motivation for this work comes from experience of project evaluations in which owners and purchasers had agreed on virtually every aspect of the evaluation except how much the project was worth. Agreement was reached on reserves, grad~, recovery, capital costs, operating costs, taxes, and, by combining these components, even on the fmal cash flow values. The only difference in opinion concerned the discount rate to be used in the calculation of the net present value. Depending on the life of the project, such differences of opinion can cause a variation of more than 50% in the value placed on a project! This is illustrated in Figure 1."

The Danskin/South Fork Boise River study area is 40 air km southeast of Boise, Idaho. The 16,000-hectare, two-segment area is mainly underlain by Cretaceous-age granodiorite and an aplitic and pegmatitic complex of the Idaho batholith, Miocene-age rhyolitic tuffs and lavas, and late Tertiary-age basalt flows. No mineral resources were identified in the study area. One mine, The Flat Creek mine, which produced several ounces of gold and silver, was found in the study area. It is geologically similar to deposits in the Neal mining district, adjacent to the northwest corner of the area; gold mineralization occurs along east-northeast-trending faults and associated quartz veins, which dip moderately to steeply southeast, and within adjacent Cretaceous granitic rock. Samples indicate the Flat Creek deposit is not rich enough to mine underground, and near surface, open-pit-mineable deposit areas could not be identified. However, exploration is warranted there and also in the 7-km interval to mines in the Neal district, and for extensions of those mines. No evidence of geothermal activity was observed, although there are hot springs in the vicinity. Some alluvial (placer) samples from the interior of the study area contained free gold, but no substantial gravel deposits were seen.

In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems.The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. Incorporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined. IntroductionCorrect decisions are the key to success in any enterprise. Scope of decisions varies with the echelons of management hierarchy. The decisions of top management are strategic, relating to the long-term future of the organization. In a mineral organization, these deal with such issues as the acquisition of a new mineral property or the diversification of the business to exploit additional markets. At the operational level, a manager is concerned with decisions pertaining to day-to- day eventualities related to production activities and other short-term needs. In either case, the prerequisite is the timely availability and use of information. The difficulty involved in decision-making depends on the situational aspect. In. many cases, the decisions to be made under given conditions are fairly straight-forward and standard. This may be due to experience gained from decision-making in similar situations in the past. In fact, many decisions in operations management are either repetitive or routine."

The areas of application, the limitations imposed by water chemistry as well as the advantages and disadvantages in the use of limestone for the treatment of coal mine drainage have recently been described by the authors (1),(2), (3). The process has been demonstrated in continuous, full-scale operation to yield a treated water meeting specifications established by the Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board and containing excess alkalinity. Their final pH levels are usually less than seven, a condition which avoids consumption of excess neutralization reagents, but which occurs with lime-based processes and results from unwanted side reactions. Operating experience has been cited by Calhoun (4) using ferric waters while others (5), (6), (7), (8), (11), have reported on related research efforts. Despite the advantages including ?the relative simplicity, and minimal costs of the process, there have been very limited industrial applications of mine drainage neutralization with limestone. Although any treatment of these waters may be considered as a temporary control measure (9), the lack of feasible, immediate alternatives, the extensive magnitude. of the waters and the high cost of treatment requires that optimum processes should be utilized and that operating experience in their use be developed as is feasible. This paper will review treatment experience with a ferrous water of moderate pollution loading .

Feldspar, a low-alumina, and abundantly available aluminosilicate source, is explored in this study to extract aluminum and potassium values. The sample comprises lamellar layers of microcline and albite with quartz containing 17.4% Al2O3, 9.67% K2O, and 66.3% SiO2. Mechanical (milling) and thermal (alkali and acid baking) activation are investigated, followed by HCl leaching. The milling treatment up to 6 h is inefficient in phase dissociation and results in ~ 40% Al and K dissolution. The alkali thermal treatment yielded 80% Al and 71% K extraction. Direct precipitation of the dissolved Al and Si values yielded alumina purity of ~ 29%, and silica gelation separated SiO2 and improved alumina product (94% purity, 71% recovery). Acid baking yielded 98% pure alumina precipitate; however, Al and K extraction were limited to ~ 45% and 65%, respectively. The microwave-assisted alkali treatment was optimal with 800 W and 10 min processing conditions yielding 80% Al and 71% K recovery with 2.26 kWh/kg alumina of thermal energy consumption. Lithium is a top-quality mineral in the energy market, with growing demand. It has many applications in medical, nuclear, and energy industries. The purpose of this article is to quantify and analyze the economic potential and projected global demand for lithium annually. It aims to determine Peru’s (specifically Puno) positioning in the global context in 2025 and 2030. The article also seeks to identify the main regulatory, environmental, and social challenges to sustainably exploit lithium in Peru. The study employs applied research (mixed approach), descriptive-correlational scope, and observational, crosssectional design. The methodology demonstrates the use of statistical techniques to model and make predictions about this energy-transition metal. Academic sources were reviewed to enable a comparative approach and projection into the future of lithium for development in the mining industry. In the last 10 years, lithium demand has grown, noting a 600% increase in the economy and projected annual growth of +26%. Exponential growth in resources is projected, where econometric, R-multivariable and R-linear models estimate that Peru could supply 1.5% in 2025 and 3% in 2030 of global lithium. Estimated growth of 5–15% in socio-environmental conflicts is projected with the start of lithium exploitation (Peru – Puno). The global potential of lithium demonstrates exponential growth. Lithium reserves in Puno - Peru would rank 13th between 2025 and 2030. It is necessary to establish a clear regulatory framework to avoid excessive increase in socio-environmental conflicts.

Land access and tenure certainty for exploration and mine development is absolutely critical to the foundation of a healthy, sustainable and environmentally-sound mineral exploration and mining sector. Without certainty, mineral exploration will be severely eroded, resulting in reduced possibility of discovering and developing new mines. The development of positive relationships based on a shared commitment of understanding, mutual respect and trust by First Nations and the mineral sector can provide this increased business certainty and social and economic benefits for local First Nations. As a sector, we face many challenges in regard to building relationships with First Nations. The root solution to addressing these challenges lies in recognizing and understanding the unique cultural differences that exist between indigenous people and the business community. From the Canadian perspective, the First Nations culture differs vastly from non-Aboriginal culture. It is equally as imperative that cultural differences be acknowledged and respected at home as they are when seeking business opportunities in other countries. The traditional “business” approaches and relationships that one understands and incorporates with one’s contractors, legal counsel, investors and Board are generally not be the best approach for the introductory and subsequent meetings with indigenous peoples. This paper is written from the perspective of my experiences accumulated over the past ten years, first as Manager of Aboriginal Affairs for one of the largest forest companies in British Columbia and now, as President and CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC). My opinions are not necessarily endorsed by AME BC. Before the gritty issues of consultation and benefit sharing are dealt with, it is worthwhile to clear up the confusion surrounding terminology. “Indigenous Peoples” is used in a global context; “Aboriginal Peoples” is used in the Canadian context therefore includes Métis, Inuit and First Nations Peoples. The term “First Nations”, in the context of British Columbia, perhaps has its roots in the fact that treaties have largely not been settled. Therefore it is important to reaffirm that British Columbia was not discovered. First Nations have resided in British Columbia since time immemorial.

BCT® - Belt Casting Technology is the new horizontal near-net-shape casting process to produce flat steel products. BCT is the revolutionary leap in casting technology, designed for the production of special and conventional steel grades. Within a partnership between Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH and SMS Siemag AG, the worldwide first caster is now in operation. SMS Siemag AG (in cooperation with Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH) has erected the first industrial-scale casting machine located at Peine steelworks. The lecture will start with an overview about the highlights of the BCT® process with regard to the mechanical engineering aspects, while the second part will present current commissioning results and operation experiences. Since December 2012, the BCT plant is running. Up to March 2015 more than 90 casts have been carried out, 26 with FeMn-alloys. Never before flat steel was casted in dimensions of 1000 mm * 15 mm and with casting speeds more than 14 m/min.

The stresses in the heads and shell of a grinding mill are largely dependent on the bending moment produced by the trunnion bearing. By using spherical roller bearings in a special narrow housing a short moment arm is obtained and the bending moment is reduced. For large mills a hydrostatic shoe bearing which also gives a short arm, can be used. Spherical roller bearings also require less maintenance and have a long service life. As the bearings are grease lubricated an automatic lubricator is used instead of an oil lube system. Service data from two Swedish mining companys confirm the fact that the above arrangements provide a long service life.
