"The hydraulic transport of solids through pipelines can have many advantages over other modes of transport. Numerous successful applications both within plants and over longer distances have demonstrated the technical and economic feasibility of slurry pipelining. Solids successfully transported include kaolin, coal, iron ore, gilsonite and limestone, and others, such as sulphur and potash, are likely to be transported in Canada in the near future. However, though the technology of solids pipelining is quite advanced the underlying principles have not yet been formulated past the semi-empirical stage. The main objective of this paper is to present a discussion of the important technical and economic considerations in the design of so lids pipeline systems by reference to typical data. The Worthington slurry pumps and pilot facilities are briefly described."

This paper presents results of an investigation on acoustic emission characteristics of granite, sandstone and rock-like material in the unconfined compression and tensile tests. Both the acoustic emission signature and stress-stain curve are analysed in the experiments.The experimental results show that different acoustic emission characteristics are observed at different stress and deformation stages in unconfined compression and tensile testing. Extensive and unstable acoustic emission changes may be interpreted as indicating failure of the rock.

FoR the convenience of those who do not care to enter into the details of this long essay, I begin with a summary of the most important results it presents. The extraction of silver by the lixiviation-process from ores which have been subjected to a chloridizing-roasting, is based upon the fact that silver chloride is easily soluble in solutions of sodium or calcium hyposulphite, and that silver is precipitated from such solutions by an alkaline sulphide, with regeneration of the hyposulphite salts. In case the ore contains lead a large portion of the latter is and dissolved, lead sulphate being soluble in hyposulphite solutions. If, at the same time, copper is present, the sulphides precipitated from the solution, contain silver, copper, and lead, a combination of metals not desirable for subsequent treatment. Mr. E. H. Russell, of Park City, Utah, is the inventor and the patentee in the United States and several foreign countries of a new lixiviation-process, based upon the chemical facts discussed in this paper. Mr. Russell has discovered that lead can be completely separated from a sodium hyposulphite solution, as lead carbonate, by sodium carbonate or purified soda-ash, without precipitating any copper or silver. After decanting the solution from the lead carbonate, silver and copper are obtained from it in the usual way. This method of separating lead prohibits the use of calcium poly-sulphide as a precipitant for the sulphides, because any calcium entering the regenerated lixiviationsolution would also be precipitated as a carbonate with the lead by soda-ash. Hence, a sodium sulphide must be employed. A full investigation has demonstrated that this is by no means detrimental. Sodium sulphide and hyposulphite are more advantageously used in the lixiviation-process than the corresponding calcium-salts. A operação da moagem é de grande importância na mineração, uma vez que é a área da fragmentação que requer maiores investimentos, há maior gasto de energia e seu desempenho afeta diretamente a taxa de recuperação do mineral de interesse. O controle do circuito de moagem é desafiador por se tratar de um sistema multivariável, não-linear e por se caracterizar pela existência de forte acoplamento entre variáveis e diferentes atrasos de tempo. Na indústria, grande parte desses circuitos é controlada apenas por PIDs. Nesses casos, quando há perturbações no sistema, tais como variação do tamanho das partículas na alimentação ou variação na dureza do minério, a interferência de operadores alterando setpoints é exigida para manter a estabilidade do sistema. Neste trabalho é desenvolvido um controlador fuzzy multivariável aplicado a um simulador de moagem. A camada de controle proposta encontra-se acima da camada regulatória. O objetivo é o de variar dinamicamente os setpoints dos PIDs para maximizar a taxa de produção dentro de uma faixa granulométrica.

"In times of increasing energy costs automotive lightweight construction is gaining in importance. This paper deals with the production of hybrid steel-aluminum compounds by forging. The compound forging process is a promising method to successfully manufacture functional parts by applying resource-saving process steps. Nevertheless, challenges resulting from different material properties must be solved.The heating of hybrid material work pieces made of steel and aluminum is a great challenge. Steel is forged at a temperature of at least TSt =900 °C, while aluminum should not exceed a temperature of TA1= 500 °C. For achieving the required temperature gradient extensive experimental investigations have been carried out. Intermetallic phases form during the manufacturing process and can influence the bonding and the global part quality. In addition, methods for the characterization of the joining zone between the materials steel and aluminum are analyzed and the factors influencing the formation of intermetallic phases are determined experimentally.IntroductionIn times of increasing energy costs and stricter conditions relating to environmental protection, automotive lightweight construction is gaining in importance. The production of hybrid compounds by forging is a promising method to manufacture functional parts by applying resource-saving process steps. In compound forging a hybrid raw part consisting of a solid core, which is enclosed by a hollow casing, is joint in the forming process. This results in a graded material structure in the part in which the mechanical properties can be specifically adapted to the requirements. Compound forging is the form joining and/or firmly bonded joining of at least two different materials while plastic shape forming occurs (Figure 1)."

"Desde 1950 en el Perú, el examen pre-ocupacional es un requisito para la inserción laboral dentro de la industria minera. Es por ello que la empresa se encargaba de la realización de la evaluación directamente. Posteriormente se designó dicha labor a un personal no facultativo, conllevando riesgos de salud futuros para el trabajador y por ende, a la producción de la empresa. En este sentido, el presente texto señala algunos de los aspectos de política preventiva de salubridad, donde sea el profesional médico, quien realice una promoción de salud y diagnóstico precoz de la enfermedad, protegiendo así la vitalidad del trabajador. Entre las principales funciones del personal médico a realizar tenemos: las contínuas visitas médicas al lugar del trabajador, desarrollar una permanente capacitación de actividades de higiene industrial, delimitar enfáticamente una orientación preventiva de su trabajo, etc. De otro lado, el trabajo muestra una descripción del formato médico (datos, historia ocupacional, antecedentes patológicos, sintomatología, examen clínico, inmunizaciones, clasificación de actitud) que debe considerar el examinador, para obtener un conocimiento conjunto del estado de salud del postulante y potencializar las capacidades del trabajador para la industria minera. De tal forma que se logra integrar en un solo documento médico, los resultados de los exámenes y se prescinde de la necesidad de contar con grandes archivos, facilitando el seguimiento de los casos."

The Bureau of Mines, investigated a cyanidation-carbon adsorption technique for extracting gold from arsenopyrite concentrates. Agitation leach experiments were conducted on 85-pct-minus-35-mesh gravity concentrates containing 21.8 oz gold and 6.4 oz silver per ton. Results obtained in leaching the concentrates showed that 96.9 pct gold and 90.7 pct silver extraction could be achieved in 96 hours of agitation. Gold and silver were recovered from the resulting pregnant solution by exposure to granular activated carbon in a countercurrent system. Carbon loadings of 2,556 oz of gold and 502 oz of silver per ton were achieved. These loadings are significantly higher than heretofore thought practical.

CSN Mineração S.A. is the second largest exporter of iron ore in Brazil and is among the five most competitive in the market. Casa de Pedra currently has an approximate production capacity of 30 million tons per year. The fleets of small trucks 6x4 and 8x4 models are responsible for the ore movement, traveling an average distance of 10 km between origin and destination. 116 trucks of this size are used in CSN Mineração for the handling of products. Every month this fleet consumes an average of 550,000 liters of fuel. The objective of the work is to do a fuel consumption analysis by truck through the embedded telemetry system. The reports generated through this system provide the specific consumption of each equipment and also the specific consumption of each Driver. As reports are generated it is possible to assess which equipment had a higher specific consumption and, in this case, the respective trucks with greater consumption are directed to the Maintenance team for analysis and action in the event that a problem is identified in the equipment. At the same time, the analysis of the drivers who had the highest specific consumption and conducted a practical and theoretical training, addressing the techniques for a safer and therefore economical direction, is carried out. In 2019, the economy of fuel consumption type S10 was 204 thousand liters, which represents 9% of all consumption foreseen for the period.

The Basinki-modified Seeger equation for deformation of metals by means of thermally activated intersection of dislocations was used to ascertain the various factors responsible for the strain hardening of poly crystalline aluminum and a series of a solid solutions of magnesium in aluminum. The analyses were based principally on the rate of change of strain rate with stress and the Cottrell-Stokes ratio. From measurements of these quantities on a series of strain-hardened states, the force displacement diagram for intersection, the density of dislocations in the entanglements, and the contributions of the athermal local stress and long-range stress interactions were deduced. Poly crystalline aluminum was observed to have the same force-displacement diagram for intersection as single aluminum crystals, and the corresponding diagram for the magnesium alloys differed in a manner that suggested that small amounts of magnesium may decrease slightly the stacking fault energy of aluminum. Although poly crystalline aluminum had about the same initial density of dislocations as the single crystals, the density of dislocations increased much more rapidly with strain in the polycrystals. This factor and the higher back stresses generated in the poly crystalline aluminum were the major factors responsible for the higher strength of the poly crystalline aluminum, As the magnesium content of the alloys was increased, the initial density of the dislocations also increased. Most of the alloy strengthening arose from this factor; alloying effects due to short-range order strengthening, Suzuki locking, Cottrell pinning, and so forth, were estimated to be quite small. The gveater rate of strain hardening in the alloys was deduced to be due primarily to the greater increase in the density of the dislocations with strain as the magnesium content was increased. It is the purpose of the present investigation to shed additional light on the average plastic behavior of a grain in a polycrystalline aggregate, by analyses, based on dislocation theory, of appropriate experimental test results. The ability to track miners and communicate with them while they work in underground coal mines is important during normal daily operations, and critical in emergency conditions. As was evident during recent incidents at underground coal mines worldwide, communication with miners and the knowledge of their location is of great importance for rescue efforts and the preservation of life. Numerous technologies have been developed, adapted, and deployed to meet tracking requirements of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act. Evaluating the performance of these systems has proven to be difficult for mine operators, system manufacturers, and regulatory agencies. The MINER Act of 2006 requires operators to improve accident preparedness by developing an emergency response plan specific to each mine. With the recent implementation of the provisions of the MINER Act of 2006, all underground coal mines in the United States are subject to the mandates of legislation concerning communication and tracking system installation. As of June 2011, 203 new or revised tracking and/or communication systems had been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), with nearly 50 other systems or revisions in the approval process (MSHA, 2011). At that time, the available approved systems for underground coal mine use included these types: ? Leaky Feeder Communication Systems ? Fixed Node-Based Communications and/or Tracking Systems ? Wireless Node-Based Communications and/or Tracking Systems ? Medium Frequency (MF) Communication Systems ? Communication System Peripherals Other types of tracking systems have since been developed and some manufacturers are seeking approval for use in this application. Some of the new products include Through-the-Earth (TTE) systems and various radio frequency (RF) adaptations. New technologies that are currently being developed and deployed in other industrial applications should also be considered, including acoustical, optical, inertial, and hybrid technologies To date, no uniform method has been employed in the industry to effectively compare and evaluate the performance of installed systems. Neither industry operators nor regulatory agencies can accurately assess the capabilities of installed systems in the continuously changing mine environment. There is need for a uniform evaluation method that provides the ability to assess how different systems and technologies perform in various mining applications, and whether they can satisfy the regulatory requirements.

Continuum damage mechanics (CDM) of rocks is studied together with their elastic and plastic behaviors to develop simulation tools for hydraulic fracturing jobs in naturally fractured formations. The model is constituted based upon pressure sensitive inelastic deformation of porous rocks and their damage mechanisms in the cases of drained and undrained conditions. The CDM model is formulated within Fracture mechanics framework. The performance of the developed elastoplastic and CDM models are compared with the available test data of a specific shale play. The hydraulic fractures growth in the reservoir scale is then simulated; in which the effect of fluid viscosity, natural fractures characteristics and differential stresses on induced fracture network is studied. The simulation results are compared with the available solutions in the literature. The developed CDM model outperforms the traditional fracture mechanics approaches by removing stress singularities at the fracture tips and simulation of progressive fractures without any essential need for remeshing.

Stress -induced ordering of carbon atoms is studied in a series of Fe-Mn-C alloys. A prominent peak is found in the vicinity of 280°C at frequencies of the order of 1.0 cps, with an associated activation energy of 37 kcal per mole. The height of the peak is linearly rekzted to the concentration of carbon in solution. The distortion of octahedral holes by manganese atoms appears to be predominant over carbon-carbon pair interactions. RELAXATION by stress-induced ordering of point defects is expected whenever the introduction of these point defects produces distortions which have a lower symmetry than that of the lattice. Under zero stress, the isolated point defects occupy the crystallographic-ally equivalent positions in the lattice, as these represent states of equal energy. However, if the defect sites are asymmetric, application of an uniaxial stress will split the energy states, and a redistribution of the defects among various states will take place. This is the case of the internal friction peak called the Snoek peak,1 resulting from isolated interstitials in bcc metals. The interstitial sites in this case have tetragonal symmetry. In the case of fcc and hcp lattices, such an effect is not expected from isolated point defects because of the symmetrical nature of the interstitial sites. However, internal friction peaks arising from interstitial diffusion have been reported both in hcp2,3 and fcc4-8 lattices. These peaks are often explained on the basis of stress-induced ordering of interstitial solutes, caused by the deviation of interstitial sites from their cubic symmetry through the presence of nearby defects. In the case of fcc lattices, evidence for interactions of both the substitutional-interstitial4,6,13 and interstitial-interstitial types5'798'14 have been presented by various investigators. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the internal friction peak attributed to the diffusion of interstitial carbon atoms in high purity austenitic manganese steels and to account for the peak in the light of the existing models. MATERIALS The Fe-Mn-C alloys used in the present investigation were made in two different ways, designated as Type I and Type 11. Type I alloys were made from high purity Fe-Mn alloys obtained in the form of 0.04- in.-diam wires from Materials Research Corporation, Orangeburg, N.Y. These alloys were carburized to different levels using gas mixtures of H2 and CH4 at 1000°C. Type I1 alloys were made in this laboratory starting with zone refined iron, spectrographically pure manganese, and spectrographically pure carbon. They were melted in an argon arc melting furnace and drawn into 0.04-in.-diam wires. All the wires were annealed at about 900°C for 3 hr prior to the internal friction experiments. After the measurements of internal friction, the phases in the samples were identified by X-ray diffraction and the carbon determined by the combustion method. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the present work, a classical Ke-type pendulum was used. The details of the equipment were described previously by D. T. Peters.9 Dry helium at 40 torr was used in all the experiments. The internal friction, measured as the logarithmic decrement of the torsion amplitude of vibration was determined as a function of temperature, from ambient to about 500°C. The background internal friction was assumed to have the form of the exponential of the inverse temperature and was subtracted from the raw data. The height of the peak was measured at the position of the maximum in the plot of the internal friction versus temperature. The activation energies of the peaks were measured by the peak shift method. The internal friction values for an alloy were obtained as a function of temperature at different frequencies of vibration. The position of the peak changes with frequency, the higher the frequency the higher the peak temperature. The activation energy of the process associated with the peak is obtained using the formula

Multiple-seam coal mining is a major issue in underground coal mining that adds additional complexity to the practice of ground control. As reserve exploitation is driven by economics, it is now difficult to mine coal without the existence of previous workings above and/or below the active seam; this is particularly true in the Appalachian coalfields. The frequency in which problematic multiple-seam interactions are now encountered has resulted in significant research regarding the underlying mechanisms of the problems and methods of mitigation. In the last few decades, a great deal has been learned about these interactions and the ability to minimize problems associated with these hazards has greatly advanced, resulting in better economics and improved safety. Minimizing the adverse effects of stress interactions often requires a thorough understanding of site-specific geotechnical parameters and previous mining geometry. This is especially evident in bump-prone ground, where pillar behavior is highly dependent on local conditions. This paper presents a case study in a deep cover, Central Appalachian coal mine where three bump events occurred. Initially, empirical design software was used in an effort to analyze the situation and prevent further instability. The empirical study proved ineffective. A detailed investigation of the bump events using the boundary element software LaModel 3.0 was then performed. This study resulted in a site-specific calibration standard that will be applied in numerical pillar design for the remaining reserve.

Groundwater control is generally an important consideration and significant source of risk during most tunneling projects. Proper baselining of groundwater conditions requires: 1) a thorough understanding of the geological environment; 2) a focused site investigation; 3) identification of construction and adjacent property damage risks associated with inflows and short and long term piezometric level changes; and 4) consideration of contractual issues including restrictions on means and methods and pay items for associated work. This paper provides an overview of groundwater baselining issues and risks based on selected design studies and construction case histories.

Since 1982 standard calibration materials recommended for respirable crystalline silica analysis by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) P7 Infrared Method and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Analytical Method 7500 have undergone minor changes in size distribution. However, a critical assumption has been made that the crystalline silica in ambient mine atmosphere respirable dust samples has also remained essentially unchanged in particle size distribution. The objective of this work, therefore, is to compare recent particle size distributions of underground coal mine dust and the silica component of these dusts with estimated aerodynamic particle size distributions of calibration standard materials MIN-U-SIL 5, Berkeley 5, and SRM 1878 used by two crystalline silica analysis techniques. This work provides resolution to a previously reported discrepancy involving the proper sample dilution for the particle sizing method used. Dust impactor sampling data for various locations in 13 underground coal mines were collected between 1991 and 1998 and analyzed for the respirable mass median aerodynamic diameters. The data suggest that the MSHA P7 Method will underestimate the silica content of the sample by at most 8.5 % in the median size range of 0.9–3.6 µm and that it is unlikely one would obtain any significant error in the MSHA P7 Method analysis when the method uses Berkeley 5, MIN-U-SIL 5, or SRM 1878 as a calibration standard material. The results suggest that the NIOSH Analytical Method 7500 would be more appropriate for a dust sample that is representative of the total (no cyclone classifier) rather than the respirable airborne dust, particularly since the mass fraction in the size range below 4 µm is usually a small percentage of the total airborne dust mass. However, the NIOSH Analytical Method 7500 is likely to underestimate the silica content of an airborne respirable dust sample by only 5–10 %. The results of this study also suggest that any changes that may have occurred in the median respirable size of airborne coal mine dust are not significant enough to cause any appreciable error in the current methods used for respirable crystalline silica analysis.

In January last I published in the Engineering and Mining Journal a table giving, with a considerable degree of accuracy, the production of anthracite coal for the year 1874. At that time it mas impossible to give any correct estimate of the production of bituminous coal, for the returns I had been able to secure from such distant and scattered districts were not always forwarded punctually, and the work of .obtaining anything like a true estimate of the coal mined in districts from which I was unable to obtain official returns was both laborious and tedious. As will be seen from the detailed reports furnished herewith, I have succeeded in obtaining tolerably accurate returns of 20,093,704 tons; and upon careful revision by numerous well-informed local authorities, my first estimate of the amount of coal not officially returned to me has grown very considerably; indeed, as I get more information on the subject I find that our bituminous coal production greatly exceeds the amount we have been accustomed to hear it placed at, aggregating as it does, 26,465,704 tons. Mr. Andrew Roy, State Inspector of Mines for Ohio, has reported the production of Ohio at 4,168,445 tons, while his first estimates were but 3,820,000 tons; and similarly, in other cases, the more full the returns direct from the mines the more incorrect do I find all previous reports. I am able now to furnish, not an accurate statement, indeed, but by far the most full and reliable one that has yet been published of our coal production. The amount of labor involved in obtaining this admittedly imperfect report has been simply enormous. An investigation of the seeding mechanism using heterocoagulation and the Derjaguin - Landau - Verwey - Overbeek (DLVO) theory of two pure minerals is the objective of this study. The seed was silica with modal diameters of 4.529 µm (fine particles) and 5.216 µm (coarse particles) and the test powder was hematite with a modal diameter of 0.883 µm. Parameters included variations in the concentration and particle size of silica. Both particles were first subjected to size determination and settling tests via Stoke’s Law. The silica-hematite system was then suspended in 0.001 M KNO3 electrolyte solutions where pH was adjusted. Afterward, the suspension was agitated and was allowed to settle at different time intervals while obtaining turbidity readings. Results through settling time and turbidity vs. pH graphs indicate that maximum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 2 to 5 while minimum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 6 to 7. At these pH levels the zeta potentials of silica and hematite are negative and positive, respectively. On the contrary, repulsive forces dominate the system from pH 8 to 11 due to the particles’ negative zeta potentials. Furthermore, the attachment of hematite to silica increases when the parameters become larger thereby increasing the effectivity of heterocoagulation at acidic to neutral pH levels.
