Developments in mining methods and rates have led to an increase in the frequency and size of waste dump failures that have not been adequately predicted or explained in terms of conventional slope stability analysis. Monitoring data and visual observations suggest a unique mode of failure responsible for large runout events. A numerical model has been developed to capture commonly observed patterns of deformation, and investigate the formation of the ensuing failure mechanism. The analyses have yielded a good correlation with observed field behaviour and have provided significant insight into the coincident stresses and deformations within the dump. Results indicate that while creep effects in the waste dump could have a significant effect on the magnitudes of displacement, the overall dump stability is governed by the strength of the foundation soils underlying the toe region. Consideration of both the stress and velocity fields leads to factors of safety for various dump heights and foundation slopes that are considerably less than predicted from limit equilibrium analysis. The results suggest that conventional limit equilibrium analysis techniques may not be adequate when assessing the stability and design of waste dumps on steeply sloping terrain.

"INTRODUCTION Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting both appropriate systems and the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation. Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights on the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement over the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is not often available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available it requires a major time and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support. Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This paper focuses on the optimization of the cable bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

The objective of this contract was to provide thrust and torque control and visual output torque readout systems to an existing mine roof bolting machine and to test the consistency of torques obtained under actual field conditions. A Lee Norse TD1 roof bolter was modified by adding a simple torque sensing device to the drill rotation mechanism and a pneumatic logic control circuit that measures torque and controls the hydraulic circuit to the rotation motor. The modification controls and indicates the final installation torque of mine roof bolts. A total of over 5,000 mechanical roof bolts were installed in an operating coal mine. The installed torque of these bolts were within an error band (standard deviation) of 8%.

The effects of additions of alloying elements on the true-stress, true-strain characteristics of 0.30 pct C, 1.00 pct Mn, 0.30 pct Si pearlitic steel were studied. The alloying elements investigated were C, Mn, Si, P, The alloys are compared on the basis of fracture stress, fracture strain, energy to fracture, rate of strain hardening, strain hardening exponent, height of the flow curve, and lower yield point. IN the past, nearly all studies of the effects of alloying elements on the tensile properties of metals have compared the conventional engineering parameters, namely, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and reduction of area. Recently, however, the true-stress, true-strain method of recording results from the tension test has been used; Lacy and Gensamer,' Hollomon," and French and Hibbard- are used this method to study the effects of composition on strength and ductility of metals. In this paper, the effects of certain alloying elements on true-stress, true-strain curves of steels with nearly constant grain size and pearlite spacing are presented. The notation employed in this paper is given in Table I. Since the definitions of stress and strain and the analytical geometry of the stress-strain curve have been explained previously, for example by Gensamer,' they will not be reviewed here. However, the method used for the determination of energy to fracture, E,, requires mention. These energy values were calculated on the assumption that the flow curve followed the idealized equation:' corresponds to the specific energy absorption to that strain value. There is justification for preferring the use of eq 1 for the determination of the energy to a particular strain rather than the area under the experimental stress-strain curve, since Gensamer showed that the use of the Bridgman correctione for stress at the neck of a tensile specimen brought the corrected experimental curve nearer to the idealized power-law curve than to the uncorrected experimental curve. However, it should be noted that the difference between the areas under the idealized curve and the experimental curve is not great for strain of less than 1.0, as can be seen from Fig. 1. The Ising model for the internal energy of a binary alloy has been used to obtain a general equation for the critical resolved shear stress of partially ordered crystals. The equation expresses the stress in terms of the Warren "alphas " and can be used to estimate the variation in strength with order without the assumption, present in the original formulation of this problem in terms of domain size, that order is complete within each domain and that the domains are of ungorm size and shape. In addition, it is the general equation, according to the Ising model, for strengthening by short-range order. Two applications of the equation are considered: One is an estimate of the variation in strength of CkAu with long-range order. The other is an estimate of the variation in strength of FeCo with quench temperature. Reasonable agreement is found with the variations reported in the literature. When the internal energy of an alloy crystal depends upon the distribution of solute, the strength of the crystal will also depend upon it because a portion of the applied stress for plastic deformation will be: where V is the volume of the crystal and E(E) is the energy change associated with the solute redistribution caused by the plastic strain, E. We expect T to equal zero for a crystal having a random arrangement of solute because the arrangement would remain random after plastic deformation. Likewise, we expect it to equal zero when the crystal is perfectly ordered because the motion of paired dislocations found in such crystals does not disrupt order. However, when short-range order exists or when long-range order is incomplete, plastic deformation will decrease the amount of order and additional work, proportional to the ordering energy, will be expended. Fisher' estimated T for crystals having short-range order by assuming an interaction energy between neighboring atoms and estimating the change in the number of unlike neighbors as a dislocation moved through the crystal. (His analysis was limited and several workers2"6 have since given more complete ones.) Fisher minimized the importance of a strengthening mechanism of this type for paired dislocations in a structure having long-range order. ~ottrell,' however, pointed out that T could be appreciable for ordered crystals having antiphase domains. He attributed the strengthening to the increase in surface energy of the domains as they were cut by paired dislocations. Ardley,' in his test of Cottrell's theory, found that r for Cu3Au crystals obeyed the equation: for 1 > t where 1 is the domain size, t is the domain wall thickness, and y is the surface energy of an antiphase boundary. His experiments represent the classic confirmation of the strengthening mechanism proposed by Cottrell. However, the assumptions involved in using Cottrell's theory are valid only for large domain size in CU~AU,~"~ i.e., when Eq. [2] reduces to: For small domains, ~linn~ has questioned Ardley's assumption that order was complete, and, indeed, Stoloff and ~avies" fpnd it incomplete until a size of approximately lOOA was reached. Even when the order within a domain is complete, it is not obvious how one determines the appropriate value for I in a structure where domains vary in size and are irregularly shaped. The purpose of this paper is to estimate T without restrictions upon the degree of order and domain shape. Our major assumption will be the use of a generalization of the model proposed by Bethe" (the Ising model) for the internal energy. This will in fact allow us to combine the theories for strengthening by short-range order and by antiphase domains into a single, general formalism. We will use the results to estimate the variation in strength of Cu3Au crystals with long-range order8 and the variation in flow stress of FeCo crystals with quench temperature.12'13 INTERNAL ENERGY For simplicity, we restrict our considerations to those binary solid solutions which can be described as an arrangement of atoms on a Bravais lattice. An atom site will be indexed by three numbers (PI, pz, p3) determined by the vector: from the origin fixed at atom (0, 0, 0) to the atom site where a', an, and a, are the lattice translation vectors. AN observation by Squires, Weiner, and phillipsl has stimulated interest in a mechanism of deformation at high temperature (above -0.5 of the absolute melting point) that is not usually thought to be involved in the creep of metals. They found precipitate-free or "denuded" zones along grain boundaries normal to the stress axis in tensile specimens of a hydrided Mg-1/2 wt pct Zr alloy after slow straining at 450° and 500°C. Their suggestion that the zones were a result of directional diffusion of magnesium atoms was supported with calculations from Harris and Jones2 which also tended to identify the process as Nabarro-Herring (N-H) creep3,4—a process that is characterized by Newtonian viscosity, with stress (o) directly proportional to strain rate (C), and one that proceeds by lattice diffusion. Material transport by diffusion along grain boundaries is an alternative basis for Newtonian viscosity, as demonstrated by Coble,5 and is favored over N-H creep for fine grain size and lower temperature.6 In either case, the strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, defined as m = d log o/d log E (which commonly appears in the empirical a = KEW), is unity. The experiments to be described here gave metallo-graphic indications of diffusional creep which were no less clear than those just cited, but the associated m (as measured by the method of Ref. 7) was much more like that of a Bingham material. For true Bingham behavior, (a — ao) E, where oo is an initial yield stress. Therefore, even if flow after yielding should occur by diffusional transport, m must increase from 0 as < is raised to reach unity only in the limit as One result is that the resistance to tensile necking conferred by Newtonian viscosity is lost, which would become increasingly apparent through the formation of more sharply defined necks as 6 is lowered. That trend appeared in these experiments. Most of the work was done on an extremely finegrained alloy of magnesium with -6 wt pct Zn and ½ wt pct Zr (Mg ZK60); the initial mean-intercept grain diameter, L, was 0.55 µ. Shown in Fig. l(a) is a germanium-shadowed carbon replica of the surface of a specimen that was coated with silicone oil,* heated to 270°C under a helium atmosphere, and then stretched locally -200 pct at an initial E = 3.3 x 10-5 sec-1. ABSTRACT Understanding process histories and worker exposures in nickel production operations is critical in determining the role nickel compounds play in respiratory cancer incidence. As part of a series on Vale Canada’s (previously known as Inco) nickel processing operations, this paper includes descriptions of Ni electrolytic operations at refineries in Port Colborne, Ontario (1922–1984), and Thompson, Manitoba (1961–present). Industrial hygiene measurements, by area and personal sampling, of workplace aerosols at these operations are reported.

Effective management of ore loss and dilution is essential for successful grade control and short-term mine planning due to their significant impact on the economic, environmental, and technical aspects of open-pit mining operations. Factors influencing ore loss and dilution fall into two categories: (i) controllable factors like mine equipment selectivity and blast design and (ii) uncontrollable factors such as spatial heterogeneity of ore and waste blocks on a bench. This paper focuses on the second category by applying spatial entropy concept to capture heterogeneity at the scale of selective mining units. In this paper, global spatial entropy is used to assess the impact of spatial heterogeneity between ore and waste blocks on the magnitude of ore loss and dilution, while the local spatial entropy can guide the allocation of blast movement monitoring balls pre-blast. High values of the global spatial entropy indicate increasing potential of ore loss and dilution, which reduce profit. Furthermore, the study investigates the relationship between spatial entropy, cut-off grades, blast movement, dig-limits optimization model running time, and profit through a number of case studies. The results show that changes in cut-off grade and blast movement can significantly affect spatial entropy post-blasting and increase ore loss, dilution, and profit reduction, revealing the need for controlled blasting at specific bench sections. Additionally, the results demonstrate an exponential increase in profit reduction due to ore loss and dilution with a rising global spatial entropy.

Itabirito é um minério de fero encontrado no Brasil. As reservas futuras de Itabirito requerem moagem para atingir o grau de liberação necessário para concentração. Os circuitos convencionais de cominuição adotados em projetos de Itabirito consistem de três estágios de britagem seguido de moinhos de bolas. Estes circuitos demandam uma alta frequência de manutenção e uma grande área de construção. Por esta razão um estudo de bancada e piloto foi conduzido para entender a rota de cominuição de Itabirito utilizando moinhos autógenos (AG ou FAG) e semi-autógeno (SAG). Os testes piloto demonstraram que moinhos SAG e AG são apropriados para a cominuição de Itabirito.

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA&apos;s Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyoming, was completed on July 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 Mm 3/d (12 Mft3/d) of 6.9 MJ/m3 gas (175 Btu/ft 3 ). Approximately 6100 tonne (6700 ton) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, cold gas - thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89 percent, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74 percent were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-1974.

There is currently in the mining industry, as well as in other industries, a movement seeking to increase investments in decarbonisation processes to help combat global warming. Among some initiatives taken is replacing diesel-powered mobile equipment in the mines with electricity-powered equipment, such as electric off-highway trucks or even belt conveyors in the mining operation. Samarco is a Brazilian mining company that since its conception has used a conveyor belt mining system in its mining operation, using only a small number of trucks to complement the mining process. This mining process that combines conveyor belts and trucks has brought environmental gains for the company since the environmental impact of conventional truck-only mining is greater than that of the combined system. To measure these gains, a medium-term mining plan was developed in which two fleet scenarios were detailed. One scenario contemplated a high level of detail of belt mining seeking its maximisation, while the other considered the operation performed 100 per cent by trucks, eliminating the use of conveyor belts. Through the comparison of these two scenarios, it was possible to make an inventory of atmospheric emissions and greenhouse gases for each one of them considering data such as types of equipment, diesel consumption, total distance travelled and energy consumption. The results showed that the fleet scenario with conveyor belts results in periods with up to 15 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions and 37 per cent less total particulates compared with the truck-only scenario. Therefore, the results confirm the environmental benefits of the method and the need to look for ways to even expand it in future operations through a study to identify the potential areas in the long-term mining plan.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Ketchem Dome tin prospect in east-central Alaska to evaluate the tin resource. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration of the tin-bearing minerals. The tin mineralization consists of cassiterite (Sn02), which occurs as grains disseminated in a greisen (quartz-mica) matrixo A bulk sample from the largest and best-developed greisen vein exposed at Ketchem Dome contained 0.51 pct Sn. Concentration of the cassiterite by gravity table methods resulted in a product that contained 56 pct of the tin at a grade of 41.4 pct Sn. The mineralization exposed at Ketchem Dome is typical of greisen found in the area and elsewhere in interior Alaska.

Proven and probable coal reserves in Iran are estimated to be in excess of 5 Billion tons while the annual coal production is a mere 2 Million tons. Underdevelopment of the industry has proved higher production levels to be impossible, despite growing demand for energy supplies. The existences of numerous legislation are thought to have a detrimental effect on coal mining activities to the extent that some business entities have become uneconomical in many areas. This paper provides an analysis of the prevailing mining laws, policy making, legal frameworks and obstacles. It also outlines some other obstacles enshrined in the law and also highlights areas where foreign direct investment should be encouraged. The costs of lost opportunities are then estimated. The paper concludes by demonstrating that deregulations, amendments and in some cases complete abolishment of the incumbent legislations governing the coal mining industry will greatly enhance development of the industry. The analysis provided in this paper together with the results obtained, can prove useful to macro-economic policy makers both at local and national levels.

When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and MPSI merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare various design procedures and the research upon which they were based. This paper documents such a comparison in the structural design area. Several SAG mill analyses are compared using both Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then utilized in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria.

Seabed polymetallic nodules, which contain significant quantities of metals key to electrification (nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese) can be processed using several different metallurgical processing options, including direct smelting and subsequent hydrometallurgical refining of the copper/nickel matte, ammoniacal leaching (gas reduction or Cuprion), and acid leaching (often reductive). Many of these approaches suffer from reduced cobalt extraction, difficult physical performance, or overall circuit complexity in general, leading to increased risk to the overall project. SGS has considered pressure acid leaching of nodules for further investigation, as publicly shared data on this processing route stems from the 1970s and 1980s and is not always easily accessible. This paper will detail the series of tests conducted and provide updated results obtained (high Ni/Co/Cu recovery with limited Mn/Fe), as well as comment on the potential treatment options on the product solution and residue.

In Canada, the only vibration regulations which apply across the entire country are intended to protect fish spawning areas. The Provinces and Territories regulate mines and quarries, and are responsible for setting vibration and airblast regulations. Some Provinces have set specific regulations, while others leave these restrictions to the mines inspectors who can set limits on a case by case basis. For the most part, it is left to individual municipalities to regulate blast vibrations and airblast from other blasting activities, which differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and in some cases are not enforced. Blasters working in different jurisdictions have to be aware of the applicable regulations for the area they are working.

IT IS WELL KNOWN that chrysotile asbestos from various occurrences exhibits varied physical properties and certain differences in chemical corn position, both of which conditions may have an important bearing on the industrial utilization of the fibre. The usefulness of a harsh fibre in the manufacture of asbestos cement products and of low-iron fibre for certain electrical uses are examples. It is also .possible to obtain a fibre with a texture too harsh and brittle to be of economic value. Much research into the structure of the mineral and to a lesser degree observations relating the water of combination to certain physical properties have ?been reported. This paper is an attempt to show that the pyrolysis of ?chrysotile takes place in three stages and that the conditions of pyrolysis are peculiar to the fibre and may afford some clue to the variations in physical properties of asbestos fibres which affect their utilization.

Most of us realize that our nation&apos;s roadways are under ever-increasing stresses, from higher traffic counts to increased tire pressures and their resulting loads. At a time when the interstate system as originally envisioned is completed, and the National Highway System is being drawn to replace it, it is appropriate that we examine design and construction methods for the next century. The stone industry shares a common desire to produce high quality, cost-effective roadways that perform over time. The superior sub-grade and road base structure provides for the superior roadway. Since I am neither an engineer nor a contractor, I will not attempt to suggest design or construction methods. What I can do is share my company&apos;s experience in supplying road base materials by using a historical perspective in Virginia and some trends in the market that we have observed. Road building and related non-building construction are still far and away our largest markets as an industry. If we can help to improve the end product of our biggest customers, we add value to our own product. Indeed, in a time of budget constraints and competing demands for government dollars, we must show value over the life of a pavement structure to ensure their long-term funding.
