THE treatment of slime is of special interest to those engaged in cyaniding gold- and silver-ores. The usual practice is to make as small a percentage of slime as possible. In many instances the slime is given no treatment, but is impounded in dams in the hope that the future will develop some method of economically treating this product. The filter-press was the first step upward from ordinary decantation, but, on account of heavy labor-charge and high cost, its use has been limited to high-grade material. The slime at the Combination mill at Goldfield averages perhaps $20 per ton, and although the values are quickly dissolved the filter-press installation was not entirely satisfactory, resulting in the erection of the canvas-cell filter, developed by Chas. Butters and his staff. This filter is a great improvement over the filter-press, and the following description of it will be of interest to those engaged in treating slime produced in crushing ores, especially in view of the fact that, by the use of this filter, slime can be treated at a lesser cost and with a higher percentage of gold- or silver-extraction than in the ordinary treatment of sand; and, moreover, the initial outlay for an all-sliming plant is less than that for the ordinary sand- and slime-plant. The economy of construction of the Butters filter-plant is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which illustrate the 20-frame filter of 40 tons capacity, now being installed by the Nevada Goldfield Reduction Co. In this construction the slime-pump is so connected that it can pump to or from either tank or the filter by changing the valve-settings-a combination which is necessary in this particular installation, since sufficient fall is not available for filling and discharging the filter by gravity. The fully mechanized longwall mining was employed in a shallow coal seam that was under the gobs of room and pillar mining and overlain by thin bedrock and thick loose sands. Operational practices have demonstrated that severe accidents would occur including roof structure instability, roof steps, damages of shield supports, and face bumps triggered by the large area roof weighting, resulting in serious threats to the safety of underground miners and equipment. This paper uses Shigetai Mine, located in the Ordos area, Inner Mongolia, as the study site. It fully considers the geological conditions of 3-1-2 coal seam and employs theoretical analysis, 3DEC numerical simulation, and field measurements to analyze the overlying strata movement for the shallow seams under an abandoned room and pillar mine without pillar extraction. The research results serve as an excellent guide to mining in similar geological and mining conditions.

Indonesia is poised to become a major player in the Pacific Rim thermal coal markets. Although the colonial Dutch developed numerous coal mines in the late 1800's for steamship bunkers and domestic fuel, Indonesia's coal industry has only recently begun to actively participate in the growing global marketplace. This export coal is primarily the result of the commercial development of coal mines in eastern Kalimantan by foreign contractors. From virtually no coal exports in the late 1980?s, Indonesia's coal industry has increased its exports to approximately 15 million metric tons (Mmt) in 1992. In 1992, Indonesia was the world?s sixth largest exporter of steam coal, By the year 2000, Indonesia projects that it will supply approximately 25 percent of the seaborne thermal coal requirements of the Pacific Rim countries. Although limited quantities of this coal may enter the European and U.S. markets, high qualities, low production casts, and favorable transportation rates will make Indonesian coals very competitive in the rapidly growing Pacific Rim markets. This study examines the Indonesian coal mining industry and compares it to the U.S. coal mining industry. This report is the sixth in a series of coal exporting country studies requested by the House Appropriations Committee. Previous studies examined the Colombian, Canadian, Australian, South African, Polish, and Venezuelan coal industries.

The Myra Falls deposits comprise a complexly metal-zoned polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide district located 90 km from Campbell River in central Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The massive sulfide deposits are hosted by subaqueously-deposited rocks of the Devonian age Myra Formation of the Sicker Group volcanic assemblage. The deposits comprise many individual massive sulfide lenses grouped into several major zones within two main felsic volcanic stratigraphic intervals - the upper Lynx-Myra-Price Horizon and the lower H-W Horizon. The largest of these zones, the H-W and Battle, occur within the H-W Horizon. The first claims in the area of what is now Boliden-Westmin?s Myra Falls Operations were staked in 1917. Early prospecting resulted in the discovery of three massive sulfide showings which eventually became the Lynx, Myra and Price mines. Sporadic exploration was carried out until 1961 when Western Mines Ltd. (now Boliden-Westmin Ltd.) acquired the claims. Subsequent ore definition outlined 1.9 million tonnes of ore (approximately 5 years of mine life) in the Lynx deposit, and mining began in 1966. Pre-mining geological reserves (to January 1, 1997) comprised 6.7 million tonnes grading 3.3 g/t Au, 130.6 g/t Ag, 2.0 % Cu, 1.4 % Pb and 10.2 % Zn for the Lynx-Myra-Price deposits, 17.1 million tonnes grading 2.3 g/t Au, 32.7 g/t Ag, 2.3 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb and 4.2 % Zn for the H-W deposits and 4.2 million tonnes grading 1.1 g/t Au, 27.0 g/t Ag, 2.2 % Cu, 0.5 % Pb and 12.0 % Zn for the Battle deposits. Property-wide production to January, 1996 has been 15.7 million tonnes grading 2.1 g/t Au, 58.7 g/t Ag, 1.9 % Cu, and 5.2 % Zn.

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. In the interest of safety in mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That cages or skips used for hoisting or lowering men in vertical and steeply inclined shafts shall be provided with safety catches designed to prevent falling of the cage or skip if the hoisting rope or other connections break; and 2. That cars used. for hoisting or lowering men with ropes in slopes shall be provided with arresting devices, other than ordinary brakes, that come into action if the hoisting rope or other connections break. In presenting this decision, it is recognized that the principal requirements for safety in hoisting operations are the use of hoisting ropes of ample size and strength to provide a factor of safety recognized as adequate by the best en engineering practice; their proper care, protection against undue wear and corrosion, and frequent inspection; and immediate removal of ropes from service when inspection or tests cast doubt upon their further safe serviceability.

El yacimiento de Horizonte es un sistema de vetas auríferas de qz ± sulfuros del tipo mesotermal, que está emplazado en el Batolito de Pataz, un intrusivo Mississipiano localizado en el margen occidental de la cordillera Oriental de la parte norte de los Andes Peruanos. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe la exploración geofísica realizada en el primer trimestre del año 2008 en Parcoy, con la finalidad de encontrar nuevas zonas de mineralizaciones potenciales y completar el modelo estructural en la zona. Para ello, se elaboró el proyecto de exploración PD para Parcoy, a través del método IP, el cual es usado en la búsqueda de mineralización de oro, así como el uso de sondajes diamantinos a las nuevas zonas detectadas por la geofísica. Como resultado de ello, se determinó 6 zona anómalas de interés prospectivo para ser analizado por el departamento de exploraciones.

Production of structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 700 Mpa produced as hot rolled coil has become increasingly popular due to cost considerations when compared to quench and temper equivalent product. This grade when produced as hot rolled coil requires the use of microalloy precipitation strengthening mechanisms. This is typically a combination of niobium and titanium microalloys. While the metallurgical concept of structural steel precipitation strengthening mechanisms has been well researched and published, actual implementation into the production process can be very challenging. In addition to achieving a minimum yield strength of 700 Mpa, in many applications additional mechanical property attributes of formability as measured by hole expansion testing along with low temperature toughness properties are now required. Achieving a balance of all the mechanical properties in a stable and repeatable performance in production using microalloy precipitation strengthening mechanisms further increases the challenges. This paper will discuss the metallurgical/process strategies required to successfully produce 700 Mpa minimum yield strength hot rolled structural steel coil. In addition, the role and goals of both niobium and titanium in this product design will be presented.

Neste trabalho é abordado o problema das múltiplas mochilas para modelar a necessidade industrial metalúrgica de alocação de bobinas de aço em um forno de recozimento em caixa. Condições especiais de processo, exigem priorização das bobinas mais antigas do estoque para garantir requisitos de qualidade. Além do mais, algumas limitações físicas e exigências de qualidade devem ser respeitadas, tais como, a obrigatoriedade de agrupamento de bobinas de mesma qualidade e limites físicos de altura e peso. Assim, uma formulação matemática é proposta para resolver este problema, cuja função objetivo visa maximizar o peso total da carga ocupada pelas bobinas de mesmas características e priorizar as bobinas mais antigas em estoque. Os resultados computacionais mostram que a aplicação da técnica do modelo de programação linear otimiza a formação de cargas gerando resultados reais de processo.

This study summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the Bureau of Mines numerous country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook. Because of the plethora of sources used in preparing these regional studies, it is impossible to cite all sources of information used in preparing this summary, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, the preparation of this study, and its related detailed studies on countries and areas, would be impossible without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information that they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or in publications of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations upon which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

Durante o ano de 2008 foram observados diversos “Gap’s” no processo de lubrificação, tais como: alto consumo de graxa, lubrificação em excesso, degradação de sistemas centralizados, ausência de procedimentos, mão-de-obra sem o conhecimento adequado, entre outros. Dessa forma, o processo de lubrificação foi separado em cinco grandes grupos de atuação, sendo eles: seleção de lubrificantes, gestão do processo de lubrificação, sistemas centralizados, contaminações e vazamentos. Foram aplicadas as ferramentas do MASP (Método de análise e solução de problemas) sendo a primeira delas o "Brainstorming", nos valendo das observações realizadas no Laminador de tiras a quente nº 2. Em sequência foi definido e implantado o plano de ação. Os resultados obtidos após as ações foram: a redução do tempo de parada associada a problemas de lubrificação dos equipamentos do LTQ#2, redução média de consumo de graxa no laminador de - 6.277 kg/mês, quando comparamos a média de consumo do período de Novembro de 2010 a Outubro de 2013, frente ao consumo atual no período de Novembro de 2013 a Outubro de 2014, totalizando uma redução média de aproximadamente - 75.321 kg nos últimos 12 meses.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the main reactions of coal gasification by steam. Coal (minus 70 mesh)-water slurry was fed into a laboratory-scale tube-coil gasifier to show the effects of residence time (0.6 to 1.1 sec), steam-coal ratio (2 to 11 lb/lb), and temperature (1,600° to 1,900° F), at about 1-1/2 atm. Devolatilization was very rapid: about 70 pet of the coal's volatile matter evolved within 0.6 sec at about 1,600° F; temperature increase released more volatile matter until about 95 pct was driven off at 1,900° F. Devolatilization was not increased by raising steam concentrations and was only slightly increased by extending residence time. Below 1,600° F, there was no evidence of the steam-carbon reaction, but at 1,900° F more than 80 pct of the coal's fixed carbon was converted to gas; the conversion was increased Significantly by increased residence time and steam concentration. The water-gas shift reaction occurred simultaneously with devolatilization, and the steam-carbon reaction, approaching equilibrium with increased residence time and temperature and decreased steam concentration.

The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yan(ai area, tihandong hroo%ill, e. China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 0(H) grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called 'sublevel open and fill stoping method' in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is Satisfactory.

Although the principal market for diatomite in the United States is in the East,4 production of the material is presently restricted to the West, because the deposits are larger, mining costs are cheaper, and the quality of product is better than that obtained from other domestic deposits. However, Tallahatta diatomite, occurring in Choctaw and Clarke Counties, Ala., has a freight rate advantage, which should encourage competition for those market that are now being supplied with the purer diatomites from the western deposits. For this reason, diatomite occurrences in the Tallahatta formation were examined by the Bureau of Mines and physical properties of samples from the deposit were determined to obtain additional data for use by any potential producer who wished to evaluate the material for its commercial possibilities. In 1894 K. M. Cunningham5 found that the buhrstone formation (now known as the Tallahatta formation) contained "siliceous shells of marine diatoms, radiolaria and foraminifera, thus being rather of the nature of tripoli or diatomaceous earth than of a true clay." Cooke6 and Semmes7 also reported the Tallahatta formation to be composed principally of diatomaceous earth with accompanying beds of sand, clay, and sandstone.

Introduction The Darwin District is 30 miles east of Olancha which is 220 miles north from Los z4ngeles via U. S. Highway No. 6. The ore deposits occur in the Darwin hills that have been elevated above the Darwin plateau by typical basin and range-type faults. Some of these faults have been active quite recently as shown by the displacemerit of Quaternary (?) basalt flows and the rejuvenation of erosion in Darwin wash. The ore bodies occur as fissure fillings and replacement of favorable beddings in a thick series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites. Rich oxidized lead-silver ores were dis'Overed in the early seventies. BY 1875, Darwin had a population Of about 5000, and by 1880 several small mills and smelters had been built. Early exhaustion of surface ores, the isolated location of the district, and fluctuation Of metal prices caused intermittent operations until World War 11. The district production is estimated at about $3,000,000 prior to 1900 and perhaps $4,000,000 between 1900 and 1945 when Anaconda purchased the major producing mines. 'or the Past two Years, daily production has averaged 75 tons of direct shipping and 150 tons of milling-grade ore. At present, 300 tons of mixed oxide and sulphide ore are treated by flotation, the oxidized lead minerals being activated by addition of sodium sulphide after galena and sphalerite have been recovered from the circuit. Extraction averages 85 pct of the lead, 80 pct of the silver, and about 33 Pct Of the zinc in a bulk concentrate. The mill is designed so that minor changes permit selective flotation of pyritic lead-zinc ores encountered at depth. General Geology The oldest rocks in the Darwin hills are a series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites probably pennsyl-vanian in age. These rocks have been intruded on the Rest by the Coso granite batholith and on the east by a granodiorite stock. Numerous sills and dikes grading from orthoclase granite to gabbro are exposed in the underground workings. The sedimentary rocks have been considerably folded and faulted, the most prominent structure being a northwest pitching anticlinal fold, the crest of which lies just west of the ridge line of the Darwin hills, The east limb of this fold has been intruded by the granodiorite stock and east of the stock the sediments show several closely spaced anticlines and synclines. The minor flexures on the west flank of the major fold are structurally important in localizing the ore in the Defiance and Essex mines of the Darwin group. There are three principal systems of faulting and fissuring, most of which are post-intrusive and premineral in age, with minor amounts of postmineral movement. In 2005, a total of 263 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.0% (n=121) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=32; 12.2%), copper ore (n=31; 11.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n=16; 6.1%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=52; 19.8%), followed by Alaska (n=27; 10.3%).

Os aços inoxidáveis austeníticos são materiais utilizadas nos ramos petroquímico, nuclear e aeroespacial cujas demandas se resumem essencialmente à: boa resistência mecânica, excelente soldabilidade e elevada resistência à corrosão. Apesar destes metais atenderem a estes requisitos, não raro são submetidos a etapas de conformação para elaboração de peças, o que pode modificar as suas propriedades originais. Basicamente, a causa desta mudança são alterações metalúrgicas induzidas por deformação, como a transformação da austenita (paramagnética) em martensita-a’ (ferromagnética). Tendo em vista que tais mudanças são acompanhadas de variações nas propriedades elétricas/ magnéticas destes aços, uma maneira de monitorá-los de maneira não destrutiva é através da técnica de correntes parasitas. Para este estudo, diversas amostras de aço inoxidável AISI 321 foram solubilizadas e deformadas por laminação a fim de produzirem diferentes frações volumétricas de martensita. Em seguida, submetidas à microscopia ótica, magnetômetro de amostra vibrante e correntes parasitas. De acordo com os resultados, percebe-se que toda a transformação martensítica se passa no intervalo entre 0,10 e 0,55 de deformação verdadeira. Além disso, com os dados de magnetização de saturação, foi possível estabelecer uma curva de calibração de comportamento exponencial, permitindo a quantificação da martensita de maneira não destrutiva.

Standing support is often used in conjunction with underground retreat mining. Knowledge of the load-displacement behavior of a standing support, and loading induced by the mine opening is critical to proper support selection. The NIOSH STOP database contains load-displacement laboratory test data for most commonly used standing supports. Hydraulic load cells currently used to measure in-situ loading of standing supports have exhibited leakage under load, producing irregularities within the dataset. An improved hydraulic load cell eliminates leakage and produces more consistent data. INTRODUCTION A hydraulic load cell, more commonly known by “flat jack” or JackPack, is a device installed to determine the loading characteristics of roof to floor supports. These standing or roof to floor supports include, but are not limited to: pumpable cribs, cans, wooden cribs (4-point, 9-point, etc.), metal props, wood timbers, concrete donut cribs, and other variations of these standing supports. Flat jack devices have been used previously to determine the loading of such roof to floor supports. The most commonly used load cell for standing supports is based on a design intended for pre-stressing standing supports, not load measurement. These load cells are produced in South Africa, and can be formed into several different shapes depending on the applications (Barczak). Flat Jacks are manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the application, common shapes are square and round that are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) thick when collapsed as shown in Figure 1. The sheet metal that makes up the bladder is comprised of 19 gauge or 1.11125 mm (0.04375 inch) thickness, the top and bottom pieces of sheet metal are resistance seam welded around the perimeter. There are two different ports installed on one of the bladder skin corners of the flat jacks; these ports allow a fluid to fill the unit and the other port has a relief valve. The fill port is comprised of a check valve. The pressure relief valve is located in the second port; preset to 1724 kPa (250 psi), pressure relief valve will keep the load cell from bursting. Bursting of these load cells typically causes a small tear in the metal skin allowing the fluid to leak out without a large catastrophic failure. The effective inflation range of these load cells is between 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) to 254.0 mm (10.0 inches) thick. Different types of fluids can inflate these load cells but the most common and easily accessible fluid for testing applications is water. Water pressure from the mine supply line can inflate these load cells to the desired load. Depending on the pre-stressing requirements a pneumatic powered pump, hydraulic pump or hand pump may be required to inflate the load cells.

DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014.
