(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) THE death of Professor Blake removes the oldest of American economic geologists and mining engineers, and deprives this Institute of one of its, earliest and most illustrious members. To many of us it brings a personal loss also, the loss of a friend. William Phipps Blake was born June 21, 1826, in New York City. -His father, Elihu Blake, was a surgeon-dentist of eminence, a direct descendant of William Blake, who settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1630. He was prepared for college at private schools in New York, and entered the Sheffield School of Yale, where he was graduated as Ph.B. in the chemical course, class of 1852, the first graduating-class of the institution. In the same year he became chemist and mineralogist of the New Jersey Zinc Co., and chemist of chemical works at Baltimore, Md. In 1853, lie started the Department of Mineralogy of the World's Fair at New York City. In 1854, 1855 and 1856, he was mineralogist and geologist of the United States Pacific Railroad Surveys of Williamson, Pope, and Whipple, and for the War Department at Washington. His writings, during this period comprise reports on the geology and mineralogy of California and other parts of the Southwest, and constitute well nigh the earliest scientific accounts of the regions described. One of them. was a translation of the Resume and Field Notes of Jules Marcou, of Whipple's expedition. From 1856 to 1859, he was engaged in explorations of the geology and mineral deposits of North Carolina, :and other parts of the country. In 1859, he became editor and proprietor of The Mining Magazine. This was a monthly periodical, founded in 1853 by W. J. Tenny, who conducted it until 1858, when it passed into the hands of Thomas McElrath, a New York publisher, and appeared in May of that year as The Mining and Statistic Magazine, with the name of

The Nitrogen Dioxide Cloud: After one year of testing it can be stated that we do know and understand a great deal about why the nitrogen dioxide formation is exacerbated in cast blasting. Picture 1 is an example of how concentrated the NOx can be from a cast blast. It has long been felt that 300 or more milliseconds of timing needs to be put between each row of detonations to allow the rock a maximum time of flight so the cast percentage is high. Our experiments have found that higher cast percentages can make with timing between 150 to 200 milliseconds between rows. Picture 2 show a definite improvement in nitrogen dioxide concentration and most of that was the result of shooting a previously shot end of the cast pattern that had not been dug, thus no confinement of the powder columns.

"XPotential Products Inc. has developed technologies to convert auto shredder residues and other forms of plastic waste into useful products such as posts suitable for retaining walls and parking curbs. The technology is competitive provided low-cost plastic waste is available, and could have applications throughout the world. The paper describes the technology used and illustrates the various processing steps. Development of the TechnologyPresently, state-of-the-art auto shredding yields approximately 75% ferrous and non-ferrous metals and approximately 25% by weight of auto shredder residue (ASR). Advances in metal shredding and non-ferrous metal separation technologies turned XPotential Products Inc.’s attention to ASR as a potential revenue source, or at least a means to markedly reduce the cost of disposal. This abundance of nuisance ASR was, in the company’s view, a potential resource as derelict autos and white goods were similarly perceived 40 years ago. As owners of General Scrap & Car Shredder Ltd. in western Canada, XPotential faced significant disposal costs for four shredders. This journey began over 10 years ago and took many twists and turns until a final course of action was chosen. The recovery of the metallic portion of vehicles and white goods has reached technological maturity and attempts to add value are now achievable only in very small increments."

The role of horizontal stress, its orientation and magnitude, in defining the behaviour of strata in underground coal mines has been well established. Poor panel layouts have led to gate end stress concentrations, roof falls and lost production. The ability to define the horizontal stress regime over a mine site has historically been limited to point measurements, in part due to technology and cost. Recent advances in the application of geophysical tools, notably the acoustic scanner (borehole televiewer) have resulted in a new technique to conduct stress measurements. By quantifying the nature of borehole breakout and the mechanical properties of rocks in which they occur, this technique provides the ability to: obtain a vastly greater number of measurements, both at different depths and spatial distribution, than other techniques such as overcoring or hydraulic fracturing readily obtain depth versus stress relationships define geotechnical domains on the basis of stress direction and in-situ stress magnitude for mine planning purposes This paper presents an overview of the technique and presents case histories in its application at a mine site in the Sydney Basin, Australia.

"According to the characteristics of rock mass and the directional cutting technology of water jet, a new idea of light shock controlled blasting with water jet slotting was put forward. Based on the fracture mechanics theory and the stress wave theory, the mechanism of damping with water jet slotting was analyzed. On the basis of the above, the evolution law of the pressure wave and displacement field during the blasting were simulated by FEM software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The result shows that: the oriented slot plays a good role in orientation during the blasting, and makes the energy generated by gas released by the explosives gather at the tip of the oriented slot, which makes it easier for the main crack to expand along the oriented slot and indirectly reduce the stress effect on the protected object. Meanwhile, the energy of the seismic wave is reduced while transmitting through damping slot. Finally, compared with the normal blasting with damping ditch, the maximum acceleration is reduced by 15.62%, the maximum velocity is reduced by 52.99%, and the maximum displacement is reduced by 68.32%. INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, with increasing demand for energy and space, an increasing number of underground projects have been under construction. Drilling-blasting method, as a traditional main method for rock excavation, is still an indispensable means in the engineering construction. As is known, blasting vibration will cause the deformation and unstable of the existing building structures, so how to reduce the influence on the existing building structures caused by the blasting vibration has become the focus. Traditional shock absorption measures mainly include three kinds: the first one is pre-splitting blasting, the second measure is to change the parameter of explosive filling, and the last one is to excavate damping ditch between the protected object and blastholes. However, engineering practices show that: the protected rock may be damaged in the process of pre-splitting crack construction by blasting, the second measure is difficult in operating, and the third measure is troubled by large work quantity (Song Guangming, 1999; Lou Jianwu, 2004; Lou Jianwu, 2005; Li Xibing et al., 2008)."

A RESIDENCE of 14 years in the Republic of Colombia, spent in almost continuous traveling and prospecting-trips, has given me an intimate knowledge of the resources of that wonderful country. The man who best knows Colombia is unquestionably General Rafael Reyes, President of the Republic for the past three years, and with seven years more to serve in his present term. Such is the strength of his personality and the wisdom of his policies that his term of office will no doubt endure as long as he is willing to serve. The vastly improved economic situation and the brilliant outlook for Colombia are so directly due to the influence of President Reyes that a few lines concerning him. will not be amiss, if they serve towards a better understanding of his personality. Born of a distinguished ancestry in the mountains of Boyaca, he is now 57 years old, just the age of his friend Porfirio Diaz when be began the work which has placed Mexico in the rank of great modern nations. It was Reyes who came to Washington to protest against the action of the government of the United States of America in reference to the establishment of the Republic of Panama, and, without entering into a discussion of this affair, it can be fairly said that there was not an American in Colombia whose feelings of justice were. not outraged at the government action and subsequent refusal to submit the matter to the impartial judgment of the' Hague. President Reyes is an accomplished linguist, speaking English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian. He has a remarkably. powerful voice, which can readily be heard by a large assemblage. "Over the last four years, an international initiative, championed by Vehicle Projects LLC, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute and Natural Resources Canada, has been active in carrying out research projects to prove out the concept of applying fuel cell technology to underground mining vehicles. These have been carried out by a consortium consisting of mining companies, equipment manufacturers, technology developers, national laboratories and consultants, with the participation of Canadian and U.S. mine regulatory agencies.This clean technology, which produces only water and electricity, would allow several advantages to be obtained, in the health area (by eliminating diesel emissions and reducing noise generation), in lowering production costs (such as reducing ventilation required) and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.This paper outlines the results obtained in several key areas, such as, the operation of fuel cells in underground conditions, risk issues related to underground and surface operation of hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen production and delivery systems, and the design and mining performance of the world’s first hydrogen mining vehicle, a mine production locomotive. The work to date on the fuel cell loader, designing the power plant and power transmission systems, operational requirements, and operating cost reductions is also presented."

Foamed cement packs offer a viable alternative to conventional timber or other forms of packs for permanent underground support. These packs comprise steel mesh and hoop containment with an outer bag for the grout; woven, laminated polypropylene fabric being ideal for the purpose. The grout is supplied in 25kg bags and fed into a purpose ? designed foam placer machine which delivers the foamed grout directly to the packs from 60 metre long delivery hose. Foamed cement grout as a fill material offers attractive properties for support packs, in summary these are: Variable Grout Strength Grout strength is controlled by the grout density being delivered from the placer machine. This can be changed by the machine settings. Strength Development Fast rate of strength development is possible so that support is available quickly. Pack yield The foamed grouts are compressible so that yielding of the grout pack can be achieved without loss of support. Rate of Filling Three sizes of placer machine are available, these use one, two, or three 25kg bags per minute of grout, pack filling time is therefore a matter of minutes, a typical 0.75m diameter pack x 1.2m high taking some 17 minutes to fill. Tests in a 1000 tonne press have confirmed that the above characteristics can be achieved with foamed cement packs at acceptable cost. This will be illustrated in the paper with experience to date.

"Energy geostructures are becoming an increasingly popular solution around the world for Developers looking to reduce CO2 and system running costs. Energy geostructures are geotechnical structures that provide both the important role of structural stability while also acting as a heat exchanger with the ground, enabling the supported buildings and or infrastructure to be heated and cooled using the principle of low enthalpy geothermal systems. The main advantage of this innovative technology with respect to standard geothermal plant is the reduction of the initial installation costs and construction schedule benefits, compared to installing conventional geothermal solutions, largely due to the additional use of structures which would be constructed in any case. However, it is important with respect to energy geostructures that additional aspects need careful consideration. For this very reason, several research studies have been carried out over the last decade on this subject and a number of real case studies have been monitored and analysed. The key difference with respect to conventional shallow geothermal systems are mainly related to the geometry, which is imposed by the geotechnical project, and the need to ensure that the primary structural role is always guaranteed. Special boundary conditions, the reduced depth, the influence of atmospheric external temperature can also play an important role for energy geostructures. They can affect, both energy efficiency and, the geotechnical behaviour because of the possible thermal induced mechanical effects. This paper presents a picture of the current situation regarding energy geostructures and their peculiar features, and collects available data to provide a reference framework. Data has been collected from literature and personal communications and then processed to provide easy-to-read charts useful for practical consultation at a glance. This paper provides, an indication of the distribution of such systems worldwide, their spread in time, and a global view of their actual efficiency from the structural, energy, economic and environmental point of view.1. Energy geostructures are geotechnical structures with a dual role of providing structural stability and the ability to exchange heat with the ground, to provide low carbon heat and coolth to supporting and or adjacent buildings and infrastructure, using the principle of low enthalpy geothermal systems (Barla and Di Donna, 2016; Laloui and Di Donna, 2013). A closed circuit of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes is embedded in the concrete, and a heat carrier fluid circulates through them exchanging heat with the ground. The HDPE pipework circuit inside the geostructure is linked to one of the above buildings or infrastructure through a heat pump, which adapts the temperature of the circulating fluid to the heating (winter mode) and cooling (summer mode) needs. In this way, heat can be injected into the ground during summer and extracted from it during winter. In principle, all structures in contact with the ground can be used as energy geostructures. The first examples of energy geostructures date back to the eighties in Austria and were mainly piles and shallow foundations. A decade later, Henderson et al. (1999) reported on what would appear to be the first successful use of geothermal energy piles in the US, with loops incorporated into the foundation for a hotel in Geneva, New York. As was their use in this New York case history, the typical geothermal energy pile application is used in conjunction with additional closed loop boreholes to provide the required energy capacity for a structure. Interestingly the report concludes that the geothermal energy piles had a better heat transfer performance than the borehole field. In 2006, a total of 2,113 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 14.2% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.5% (n=1,955) and anthracite mines 7.5% (n=158) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 71.0% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.2%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.3%).

Numerical modelling simulations of proposed mining sequences are used to evaluate mining induced stress concentrations and their migration associated with the progress of mining. This analysis is a standard practice for most prospective mining projects at various levels of feasibility study. The studies are usually initiated at the beginning of the mining cycle, on a global scale, and are maintained and updated throughout the life of mine (LoM) to identify or address local issues and the required remedies as and when needed. Developments in numerical modeling techniques along with advancements in computing technology and data storage/management capacity have given rock engineers access to a huge volume of data that needs to be analyzed and assessed. The most common approach to numerically evaluate stress concentrations and migrations in underground mines is to select the points of interest in a given volume such as the back of an excavation or points within pillars around critical infrastructure, and plot the stresses or a derivative of stresses over time to represent life of mine concentrations and migrations of stresses. The problem with this approach is the sharp gradient of stresses close to excavation boundaries. Slight changes in the location of selected points can change the stress concentration and migration patterns substantially and all generalized statements about LoM risk can be challenged in one way or another. For global stresses, the most common current approach of data analysis is by viewing series of pictures representing stress contours. In this approach, it is easy to overlook some critical detail and/or be masked by personal preferences of contour/picture representation. To overcome the problem of representing and analyzing huge volume of stress simulation data, the authors, through their experience at different mining operations, developed a volume-based technique to reliably evaluate mining-induced stress concentrations and migrations. The volume-based approach is for risk-based assessments of adjacent regions in the rockmass, in and around planned stoping excavations. The volume of interest is the entire ore body that is planned to be mined, but it could be just a part of the ore body depending on the specific use case. The risk identifiers are the induced stresses as compared to the strength of the rockmass. Over the LoM, the risk identifiers are tracked versus the corresponding excavation ratio of the zone. This approach is very effective in identifying the stages of mining that are contributing the most to the mining induced stress risk and the results can be used for proactive planning and mitigations measures such as alternative mining sequences, or stope sizes, or extraction methods. The approach has also been very successful in application at mature mines, particularly in assessing the re-initiation of mining in zone that has been dormant for some time. The volume-based approach allows for an assessment of the current state of the rockmass and the identification of future risks when planning resumption of mining activities.

The low -temperature tensile and creep behaviors of single crystals of copper were evaluated and analyzed in such a manner as to provide an estimate of the separate contributions of short-and long-range stress fields to strain-hardening. Furthermore, the average force-displacement diagram for thermally activated intep-section of two dislocations was estublished. This diagram plus a knowledge of the variation of dislocation spacing and the long-range back stresses with strain permits on accurate prediction of creep rates. The calculated activation energy for intersection under conditions of a constant strain rate increases linearly with the absolute tempevatus-e as required by theory. AN understanding of the detailed mechanisms for strain hardening constitutes one of the principal unsolved problems in dislocation theory. Two major models for strain hardening have been advanced in the past. The one that has received greatest attention assumes that strain hardening arises exclusively from long range interaction stresses between moving dislocations and piled-up arrays of blocked dislocations on the slip planes. This type of interaction was first announced by Taylor' who revealed that the back stress fields due to a simple uniform array of positive and negative dislocations entrapped in the deformed crystal would result in parabolic hardening. Shortly thereafter Andrade and Henderson" demonstrated that the strain hardening of fcc single crystals was not parabolic, as previously thought, and finally it was recognized that a typical stress-strain curve consisted of three successive stages of deformation, niz., the easy glide, Stage I, linear hardening, Stage 11, and the parabolic hardening, Stage 111, ranges. The objections to Taylor's somewhat na'ive model, which were presented so forcefully by cottrell; were largely removed by the more realistic details incorporated in Mott's analysis.5 But because Mott's theory for hardening via long range stress fields gave somewhat analogous results to that of Taylor's (inasmuch as it also predicted a parabolic rate of strain hardening whereas the observed rate of strain hardening in Stages I and I1 were linear), it was not widely accepted. Major consideration was therefore given to models, such as those which were advanced by Friedel and seegere that were formulated for the ad hoc purpose of yielding linear rates of strain hardening. The second major thought regarding strain hardening is based on the concept that it arises principally from short-range stress fields due to the interactions between intersecting dislocations. Cottrell and stokes7 showed, several years ago, that the constancy of the flow stress ratio at two temperatures regardless of the strain was inconsistent with the concept that strain hardening arose exclusively from long-range back stresses. The argument that strain hardening was primarily due to local interactions of intersecting dislocations was presented in considerable detail by asinski.' Extending Basinski's method of analysis of the intersection process, Mitra, Os-borne, and dorn recently demonstrated that indeed the strain hardening in aluminum single crystals arises principally from local effects coincident with intersection; however, these conclusions, too, must be modified, as will be shown later in this report. The present investigation, devoted principally to the low-temperature deformation of copper single crystals, was initiated in an attempt to ascertain whether or not the same conclusions arrived at for aluminum also apply to metals, such as copper, which have much wider stacking faults. It was soon observed that the strain hardening in copper could not be attributed exclusively to local effects between intersecting dislocations. Previously no analytical method for arriving at the possible simultaneous contributions of long-range stress fields and localized forces on intersecting dislocations was available; consequently, the separation of these two factors could not be readily accomplished. In the present report a method of estimating the separate contributions of each of these two factors to strain-hardening will be presented. The authors will show that both long-range stress fields of the type contemplated by Seeger and Friedel as well as short-range forces of the type considered by Basinski are responsible for strain hardening in fcc metals at low temperatures. This method of analysis also accounts for, in a satisfactory way, the effect of stress, temperature, and strain on the creep rate under constant stress. Furthermore, in the course of presenting their methods of analysis the authors will also reveal the rather complete agreement of their experimental data with the concepts of the theory for thermally activated intersection of dislocations. Standard metering of electric arc furnaces usually uses root mean square (RMS) or true root mean square (TRMS) measurements for determining power. Only sinusoidal signals are accurately described by RMS meters, and dc or high-frequency components normally are lost in standard TRMS metering. This can lead to inaccuracies when electrical signals are not sinusoidal, contain dc components, or include fast risetime perturbations, as is the case with the electric signals from an electric arc furnace. Electric arc furnace electrical waveforms, observed in research carried out by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, show high-frequency components and significant deviations from sinusoids. These perturbations and distortions make metering difficult for standard power meters. The inaccuracies in metering can cause further problems if those sensors are used in control systems. For control strategies requiring rapid response, any averaging scheme loses information that can be used in control decisions. In order to obtain better signals for both monitoring and control, a study of instantaneous, RMS, and TRMS power monitoring devices was conducted. From this study it was concluded that precision integrated circuits should be used to obtain instantaneous power with a bandwidth of at least 25 kHz. The information from these devices is more representative than that of standard meters and can be used in predictive control.

"The present study investigated the low-temperature creep mechanisms in ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminum manufactured by accumulative roll bonding. UFG aluminum with grain size 0.39 µm showed steady state creep even at room temperature under low stresses as confirmed by the creep curves in the strain rate–strain plot. The low-temperature behavior was divided into four regions by three distinctive stresses, sI, sII and sIII: sI (=45 MPa) is denoted as the micro-yielding stress with which dislocations start movement, sII (=85 MPa) the dislocation-multiplication stress above which dislocations multiply with creep deformation, and sIII (=171 MPa) the conventional yield stress above which macroscopic plastic strain is generated. During low-temperature creep, below sI, negligible plastic strain is generated. Between sI and sII, creep deformation with stress exponent 2.5 occurred, which is accommodated by dislocation absorption into grain boundary and grain boundary sliding, similarly to the low-temperature creep of HCP metals. Between sII and sIII, creep deformation with stress exponent 7.0 occurred, whose mechanism is similar to the low-temperature creep of coarse-grained aluminum. Above sIII, power-law breakdown occurred.INTRODUCTIONIt is well understood that the creep deformation brings about at high homologous temperatures (T/Tm) of >0.4, where Tmis the melting point, with diffusion processes. Recently, the importance of aluminum is increasing for cryogenic temperature parts such as a metallic liner or a cap in high pressure-hydrogen vessels, and the presence of creep behavior in aluminum at room temperature has become recognized (Matsunaga, 2013;Kassner, 2015).In HCP metals and alloys, especially intitanium, steady-state creep behavior appears at room temperature with apparent activation energy of1/10 of that for self-diffusion(Neeraj, 2000; Matsunaga, 2009).On the other hand, Kassner (2015) claims that aluminum shows creep behavior at room temperature with apparent activation energy of 4/5of that forself-diffusion, but never reaches the steady state. We should note that it is derived from the data obtained from short-term creep tests of few hour, and Matsunaga (2013) already claimed the presence of steady state in room temperature creep in aluminum with activation energy of 1/5of that for self-diffusion.The mechanisms for low temperature creep are considered different between HCP and FCC metals: in HCP metals, grain boundary sliding is observed and is thought to accommodate piled-up dislocations at grain boundaries through absorbing them. The so-called slip-induced grain boundary sliding occurs with low number of activated slip systems(Matsunaga,2009).On the other hand, in FCC metals, many activated slip systems bring about work hardening with dislocation cell structure formation. In the initial stage of creep, it results in primary creep (Kassner, 2015), but Matsunaga (2013) claimed that once the annihilating of a cross-slipped dislocation to another reaches balance, steady state is established. It has been, however, strongly required to show more convincing experimental verification for the presence of steady state in FCC metals at low temperature."

"A review is given of the effects of solid state point imperfections upon a number of mineral benefication processes and a metal extraction process. It has been found in numerous flotation studies that small amounts of aliovalent impurities (dopants) in binary compounds may show major effects upon flotation behavior. Both semiconducting and ionic conducting compounds are affected. These effects are also seen in hydrometallurgical studies as well as in electrostatic operations. Additionally, de-copperization of lead melts appears to be strongly influenced by similar defects. It is hypothesized that the effects observed in these studies are present in actual operations and should be considered in designing processes. A few speculations concerning future efforts are advanced. IntroductionImperfections [point (e.g., vacancies, interstials, quasi-free electrons, electron holes, impurity ions), line (e.g., dislocations), two dimensional (e.g., grain boundaries) and three dimensional (e.g., 2nd phases) defects] are generally present in solid materials and these imperfections may, and often do, have important effects upon a variety of properties and processes. In general, one may, in most cases, attain elimination of three dimensional defects by a separation process of one type or another (e.g., gravity, electrostatic, magnetic, flotation, hydrometallurgical etc.,). Thus, this type of defect has rarely been investigated in a systematic fashion. Two dimensional defects are always present in non-single crystal materials but have also escaped systematic studies in processes primarily because the control of such defects is not easily attained. Line defects are non-equilibrium entities which are present in ill-defined quantities so that they present a variable that cannot be easily controlled although through careful systematic experiments one can attain some reproducible relations pertaining to this type of defect.Contrary to the lack of studies concerned with the effects of 1, 2 and 3 dimensional types of defects there has been some activity concerned with point defects and their effects upon a number of mineral/metallurgical processes, especially flotation processes. Thus, this article will present a review primarily of point defects in relation to their effects upon flotation although other processes and defects will also be mentioned."

Events of the mid-1970's have materially affected US coal production and transportation by railroad. Coal, as a replacement or substitute for petroleum fuels, has been hauled in significantly increased tonnages. Concurrent with the new demand, the railroad regulatory environment has undergone major changes, especially in "deregulation" activity. Those two events have produced considerable Litigation regarding coal rates. This paper discusses the factors involved with railroad rates and topics such as revenue adequacy, Ramsey Pricing, stand-alone cost, and differential pricing. In addition, an update on the western railroad merger situation and the implications for coal transportation are presented. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the current regulatory climate and future prospects.

The Bureau of Mines has been promoting health and safety in mining since its establishment in 1910. One area of research covers methane control in coalbeds; this report describes a multipurpose borehole used for both degasification and the production of commercial-quality gas. The multipurpose borehole was drilled into a barrier pillar, and seven horizontal degasification holes and one pressure point hole were drilled radially out from its perimeter. On January 28, 1974, after 505 days of degasification, a compressor was installed to the exhaust stack of the multipurpose borehole (1), and pipeline--quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipe-line. As of February 4, 1975, over 171 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company. The in situ pressure at a depth of 200 feet into the coalbed and the average gas flow and water flow from the degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psig, 1,200,000 cfd, and 6.8 gpm, respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psig. Five hundred days later, the corresponding values were 620,000 cfd, 0.15 gpm, and 10.5 psig. Daily flows have been as high as 800,000 cfd, and as low as 360,000 cfd, during the last 500 days. On February 4, 1975, after 882 days of degasification, 576 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the Pittsburgh coalbed; apparently a much larger area of virgin coal is being degasified than is defined by the holes. This study indicates that horizontal boreholes drilled into a coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove gas from the Pittsburgh coalbed,

"INTRODUCTION Outer space technology and exploration have reached a tipping point so that mining and mineral processing in outer space is now a certainty and not a dream. Several competing companies, worldwide, are well on the way to building spaceships to land on the Moon and eventually mine the Moon and asteroids for volatiles, rare earth metals and Helium-3. The Google Lunar XPrize offers a $30 million prize1. China has recently landed a spacecraft on the Moon. The European Space Agency, with cooperation from the United States, has landed a spacecraft, Philae, on a comet. And, Mars One is planning a one-way trip to establish a settlement of humans on Mars. How and why are the Moon and asteroids and their resources of interest to private space industry and companies? Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue? GEOLOGY OF THE MOON AND ASTEROIDS –WHY DO WE WANT TO MINE THERE? Space enterprises are actively working towards establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products, and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2. Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water, and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind. The Moon regolith contains valuable rare earth minerals, platinum-group minerals (particularly where the Moon has been impacted by asteroids), volatiles (useful for processing and habitation), Helium-3 and titanium. Almost non-existent on earth, Helium-3 is abundant and accessible on the Moon and can be used in nuclear fusion power plants, producing much more energy than fission reactions and with much less radioactive waste. One of the main reasons Helium-3 is sought after as a fusion fuel is because there are no neutrons generated as a reaction product. Governments and private companies focus on mining of Helium-3 on the Moon as a basis for their economic models. Moon Express, one of the private companies who is planning on mining on the Moon, will recover moon rocks to fund its early operations25. Subsequently, it will recover Helium-3, platinum, and rare earth metals, as it engages in surface mining operations."
