Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's), once universally accepted as ideal compounds for use in cooling and refrigeration, in foam production, and in cleaning electronic components, are being phased out and eventually banned under extensive international agreements because the chlorine in CFC's is thought to deplete the Earth's ozone layer. The industry has responded with the introduction of alternatives in the form of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC's), which contain no chlorine, and with hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC's), which fill an intermediate gap in the replacement of CFC's. As a result of the elimination of chlorine in the HFC's and the reduction of it in the HCFC's, these alternatives contain more fluorine than the CFC's do. Other nonfluorocarbon substitutes, known as not-in-kind alternatives, contain no fluorine at all. As a result, the fluorspar mining industry, which is the source of fluorine in fluorocarbons through intermediate hydrofluoric acid, is being affected. Concern for this impact has led the U.S. Bureau of Mines to employ its capabilities to analyze various scenarios in the evolution of CFC replacements and substitutes to determine their effect on fluorspar mining. This report utilizes a network flow model to examine the effects of proposed replacements for CFC's, in terms of fluorine content, on fluorspar operations worldwide and on hydrofluoric acid plants in North America and Europe.

Some conceptions, particularly those regarding the necessity of depth, have been fairly well shattered, as we find that they are present in the water tunnels of New York, on the surface at marble quarries in Vermont, and in the coal mines of the United States, as well as in the deep mines of the South African and Kolar gold fields, and in the nickel, copper and gold mines of Canada. Long-term closure alternative selection for heap leach pad effluent is a daunting task. Passive water treatment, if designed with enough long-term capacity, can minimize long term O&M while meeting water quality objectives. Leach pad effluent from a 30-acre leach pad at Basin Creek Mine, Basin, Montana was targeted for long-term water treatment using a passive water treatment system. The objectives and results of design and construction are: 1. Design a long-term passive system utilizing existing infrastructure. 2. Construct a field scale pilot test at the mine site.

The rockfall hazard is the major contributing agency to fatal accidents in South African platinum mining operations. The majority of these accidents occur in close proximity to the working stope face. The collapse of fractured or blocky ground between individual temporary support units or the closest permanent support line to the stope face has not yet been adequately addressed. A large-scale stope support system testing facility funded by the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), has been designed and constructed to test support systems and stimulate innovative thinking by mining personnel, support manufacturers and suppliers by providing a facility where the interaction of stope support systems, a rigid stope face and a discontinuous hangingwall beam can be observed during quasi-static and dynamic conditions. Tests have been carried out on various types of stope support systems, focusing on the temporary support systems used in the immediate stope face area. The interlinking of the temporary support units with mesh or safety netting has been explored in the prevention of falls of ground between support units during gravity driven falls of ground. These tests illustrate the facility?s ability to be used to stimulate innovative thinking and provide a testing ground for the development of temporary support systems in order to reduce the risk off all of ground injury to mining personnel at the stope face.

One can hardly pick up a newspaper, magazine, review or economic treatise without confronting the fact that we have or are threatened with more .of certain goods than we have use for, whether it be corn, wheat, cotton, coal or oil, -lumber, 'leather, newsprint, automobiles, zinc, lead, copper or what not. How did this unprecedented state of affairs arise? Who is to blame? How shall we avoid smothering ourselves in our own production? The voice of the farmer is raised in appeal to the Government to relieve him from the dilemma of his own fertility. In answer the Government employs thousands of experts and spends millions of dollars to aid the farmer. But to what end? To make him still more efficient so that he may produce even greater surpluses? Not satisfied with the result, it spends other millions to prepare vast areas of the arid land of the West for more farmers to cultivate and insure yet larger surpluses. Then what? "This summary of international mineral exploration activities during 2017 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY) and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2017 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2017 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash), and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2017 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities."

Con el objetivo de recuperar la casiterita y los minerales portadores de niobatos que se pierden en los relaves de la planta de preconcentración por espirales de la minera Taboca, se probaron tecnologías de separación centrífuga de alta intensidad y magnética de alto campo. El gran desafío de la compañía es generar valor a partir de rocas con contenido muy pequeño, con media del 0,19 % para el estaño y del 0,23 % para los óxidos de niobio y tántalo. Sin embargo, ganar ese desafío es posible, a través del perfeccionamiento constante de los procesos de producción utilizados en las plantas. En este caso fue posible incrementar las recuperaciones de estaño del 68,7 % al 80,0 % y la recuperación de niobio y tantalio salió de niveles del 44,5 % al 68,0 %.

"An existing four lane section of US 27 was widened to eight lanes. The project lies in the rugged Valley and Ridge Province of the Appalachian mountains starting at the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee and extending 2.6 km north to Signal Mountain Boulevard. This terrain presented many challenges to accommodate the road widening in the narrow, rugged topography. Multiple tiered wall systems consisting of large tieback walls, post-tensioned reaction blocks, and gravity MSE walls for a total of approximately 30 retaining walls were required. The retaining walls served to stabilize the thrust faulted geology while also minimizing right-of-way acquisitions. The cut walls consist mainly of a tiered system of tied-back soldier piles walls with cast-in-place concrete facing. Cast-in-place pile shear walls were required along the toe of existing MSE walls to maintain stability during construction. This paper discusses the design methodology, which includes a hybrid (rather than traditional) earth pressure diagram intended to reduce life-cycle maintenance and long-term performance. Further this paper addresses wall construction, slope stability analysis, landslide mitigation alternatives, soldier pile wall design features, site challenges, monitoring and performance (to date) of the wall systems.INTRODUCTIONThis project involves the proposed widening of US Highway 27 (State Route 29) from the north end of the Tennessee River Bridge at Manufacturer’s Road to State Route 8 (Signal Mountain Road), approximately 2.64 km of roadway (Fig. 1). The project site is located adjacent to the Tennessee River on the north side of downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee in Hamilton County. The existing, limited access highway is to be widened from four lanes (two northbound and two southbound) to a minimum of eight lanes. Some portions of the alignment will expand to as much as ten lanes where northbound and southbound ramp acceleration/deceleration lanes coincide.In addition to the number and heights of cuts and fills involved, a major factor in determining an economical design for the alignment is the complicated geologic conditions along the roadway alignment. The existing roadway is situated between several steep cut slopes, some of which are only marginally stable or currently exhibit signs of instability. Due to the proximity of the project to the downtown area, the steep slopes along the alignment, and the relatively dense population near the alignment, widening the pavement and constructing cut and fill slopes to a stable configuration would result in major land acquisition for slope right-of-way."

"During the diametrical compression test, the tensile stress generated near the loading plate is influenced by the contact area between the loading plates and specimen. However, very few studies have determined the contact area. Theoretical or analytical models have shown that for an orthotropic material (i.e., with material properties that differ along each of three mutually orthogonal twofold axes), the maximum tensile stress is generated at the center of disk when the angle of the principal material direction to the loading direction is close to ?/4. The maximum value is almost constant, regardless of the contact area. Conversely, the maximum tensile stress is generated near the loading plate when the angle between the principal material direction and loading direction is small. The maximum value decreases as the contact area increases. Therefore, in the latter case, the influence of the contact area on tensile strength measurement of is significant.In previous studies, the distribution of stresses applied on the loading plate is assumed to be a uniform load. In reality, the applied stress is highest at the center of loading plate and seems to decrease with distance from center. The applied load disappears at the edge of loading plates. In this study, in order to satisfy this boundary condition on the loading plate, the cosine curve is adopted as the distribution of load applied on the loading plates in a theoretical model of the diametrical compression test. Furthermore, the elastic solution using boundary conditions shown in this study is used to obtain the tensile stress distributions on the loading axis for an orthotropic circular plane. These distributions are compared with empirical results obtained under uniform loading with a loading plate or concentrated loading in previous studies."

Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examination of many factors and their effect on the bottom line. Most mines use a bottom line measure based in some way on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. Productivity can be measured or predicted for specific tasks using either field measurement or modelling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture as they are time and task oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods of time. Other cost, such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks such as fuel and tire cost. This paper focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost.

"Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

INTRODUCTION IN a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the technical cohesion limit is affected by the same four factors that affect the flow stress, namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate.16-28 Moreover, each of these factors affects the technical cohesion limit in the same way that it affects the flow stress.‡ The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term "fracture stress" has come into use with the same significance as "technical cohesion limit," the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the flow of notched and unnotched specimens between yield and fracture. A study has thus been made of the flow and fracture of metals as affected by the stress system, and of the ductility of metals as affected by the stress system throughout plastic deformation. Since two of the principal stresses were equal (S2 = S3), the stress systems can be represented in terms of the radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse radial stress S3 to the longitudinal stress Sl.* The results of the experiments are represented by a series of complete flow-stress curves for each of the metals investigated, and these diagrams have been used for the development of other diagrams of various types. Ludwik was the first to suggest that fracture occurs when the flow stress becomes equal to a technical cohesion limit. Although Ludwik was incorrect in his view that the technical cohesion limit depends only on the amount of plastic deformation and not on the stress system, he was correct in his view that the flow-stress curve for any stress system terminates at a point representing a technical cohesion limit. The authors have seen some recent references to assertions by other investigators that a point representing the fracture stress need not be on the flow-stress curve. The Ludwik principle, however, would seem to be axiomatic, provided that the flow stress and fracture stress are properly defined and that the fracture stress is properly determined. Disregard of this principle has led to some untenable theories of criteria for fracture. When a metal is very ductile, the conventional method of determining the ductility and fracture stress by dividing the breaking load by the sectional area after fracture, generally gives values that are much too high. China is the world leader in proven reserves of antimony, barite, ilmenite (titanium), magnesite (magnesium), molybdenum, rare earths, and tungsten. China also has large resources of low-grade iron ore and significant resources of other mineral commodities, such as coal, based on its production and export capabilities. India has significant resources of bauxite, barite, graphite, iron ore, and mineral sands.

Process-oriented experiments on the use of coal as an adsorbent for certain soluble components of sewage are described. The capacity of Canadian coals for these components was less than 0.1 per cent by weight for the highest concentration at which these components could be expected to be found in domestic sewage. This is much less than values reported in the past. A pronounced selectivity between components was observed. Experiments on bacteria removal in beds of coal, regeneration of spent coal to restore adsorption capacity and COD contributions of coal are reported in the paper. The simple application of coal as an adsorbent does not seem promising.

The effects of testing temperature, frorn 77" to 420" K, and volume fraction of martensite on the micro-plastic response of unaged Fe-31Ni martensite-austenite aggregates have been determined. The kinetics of the aging phenomena which lead to a decrease in the microplastic response were also characterized. These determinations, supplemented by other experimental results, show that at least two mechanisms of plastic deformation give rise to the apparent softness of the quenched structures. Only one of these mechanisms is fully discussed in this paper The transformation of retained austenite to martensite during the application of stress leads, in specified conditions, to large microplastic strains. This deformation behavior cannot be described by normal transformation plasticity theory but is shown to result from the fact that stress-assisted formation of martensite is a possible deformation mode. The present results and further considerations of previous work lead to the conclusion that it is unnecessary to postulate a special work-hardening mechanism to explain the mechanical properties of unaged martensite. It is now generally accepted that dislocation motion can occur in many solids at stresses very much below the L'macroscpic" yield stress, e.g., 0.1 pct offset. This phenomenon has been investigated by a variety of techniques including measurements of elastic limit,' effective static elastic modulus,~ and irreversible deformation following stressing at low levels.3"5 Of particular interest to the work to be described are exper -iments conducted on the deformation of martensite in attempts to decide whether freshly quenched ferrous martensites are "hard" or "soft".6 Muir, Averbach, and cohenl and McEvily, Ku, and ~ohnston' have shown that as-quenched ferrous rnartensites can be plastically deformed at relatively low stresses. A difference between these two sets of experiments exists in that some diffusion of carbon would take place before testing in the experiments of Muir et a1. because the plain Fe-C alloys which they have tested transform to martensite well above room temperature. McEvily et a1. examined Fe-Ni-C alloys with Ms of about -30"~ and tested the alloys directly after quenching to — 195" ~ —a technique which obviates any appreciable carbon diffusion. Unfortunately, a characteristic of the alloys which transform below room temperature is that they do not transform entirely to martensite. The results discussed below will show that, because the transformation of this retained austenite under stress leads to plastic deformation, one cannot investigate the properties of martensite by such experiments. The existence of a second deformation phenomenon, which is not caused by retained austenite, is also established in the present work. In line with a previous suggestion,' it is believed that the second microdefor-mation mode is principally due to the internal stresses generated by the formation of martensite. To avoid confusion in the present report, the evidence we have found for this interpretation will be discussed separately in a brief note.7 EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The alloys were induction-melted and cast under vacuum; the resulting compositions are given in Table I. The ingots were hot-swaged to 2-in.-diam bar and further cold-swaged and/or cold-rolled prior to specimen preparation. The standard tensile specimens were machined from sheet. The gage section was 0.05 by 0.2 by 5 in.; 0.75-in.-wide ends had 0.2 5-in. centered holes for pinloading. The three-point bend samples were 0.075-in. thick and 0.6 in. bide. The distance between the outer loading points was 5.5 in. In order to establish a standard starting condition, all specimens were quenched to 77°K prior to annealing in vacuo for austenitizing. The temperature of the austenitizing anneal was controlled to + 5"~. The testing and aging temperatures were maintained by various liquid baths (nitrogen, 77"~; freon, 130° to 200°K; acetone, 200 to 300°K; silicone oil, 300' to 450°K) to better than il°K. Strain Measurement. The results herein were derived from both uniaxial tension and three-point bending experiments. For bending tests, the stresses and strains reported are those corresponding to the maximum fiber values. Normally, because of the small strains involved, very sensitive strain measurements are necessary to make microplastic measurements. However, because of the magnitude of the dilatation and shear involved in the martensitic transformation, the requirements in the present experiments proved to be less rigorous. Notches are preferential sites for fatigue and for environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) initiation. Semi-empirical notch sensitivity factors have been used for a long time to quantify notch effects on fatigue design. Recently, this concept has been mechanically modeled using techniques which properly consider the notch tip stress gradient influence on the fatigue behavior of mechanically short cracks. This model properly calculates such values from the basic fatigue resistances of the material, its fatigue limit and crack growth threshold, considering the characteristics of the notch geometry and of the loading, without the need for any adjustable parameter. Such criteria to estimate notch sensitivity and tolerable short cracks on fatigue have been extended to EAC conditions and verified by proper tests. In its simplest version, the criterion for the maximum tolerable stress under EAC conditions uses the resistances to crack initiation and to large crack propagation and the characteristic short crack size under EAC, considering the crack size and stress intensity factor. Moreover, the tolerance to short cracks under fatigue and under EAC conditions can be unified in an extended Kitagawa-Takahashi diagram, a new and potentially very useful tool for material selection tasks.

O Pó de Aciaria Elétrica (PAE) é um resíduo sólido originado da fabricação de aços em Fornos Elétricos a Arco (FEA). Este resíduo contém metais nocivos ao meio ambiente e é constituído, em sua maior parte, pelos elementos ferro, zinco e oxigênio. Devido aos custos crescentes para disposição e por tratar-se de um resíduo perigoso, a indústria procura tanto opções de reciclagem quanto a possibilidade de retorno ao processo produtivo do aço. Uma das alternativas é a reintrodução na aciaria elétrica através de aglomerados autorredutores como parte da carga do FEA. Nesse trabalho, são confeccionadas misturas autorredutoras contendo PAE e coque de petróleo, apresentando as correspondentes caracterizações químicas e físicas. É feita também uma avaliação do comportamento destas misturas em ensaios termogravimétricos, mostrando a possibilidade do emprego desta técnica na aferição prática do teor ótimo de coque.
