The United States Forest Service, as a land managing agency, is responsible for the surface administration of National Forest lands. The basic objectives of management are protection and utilization of renewable resources such as water, forage, timber, wildlife, recreation, and clean air. Much of the National Forest land in this country is open to mineral prospecting and development. When large de-posits of minerals are extracted from the forest environment, especially by surface methods, there are oftentimes conflicts between accepted mining methods and the objectives of other resource management goals. Such is the situation in Southeast Idaho where several members of the phosphate industry are operating on and adjacent to the Caribou National Forest. In 1966, the phosphate industry and the Caribou National Forest became mutually concerned with the problems of rehabilitating mined areas and minimizing potential damage to adjacent forest areas. A Cooperative Administrative Study was initiated with industry supporting the Forest Service financially and with equipment, material, and manpower, as well as interest and enthusiasm. The objectives of the study are to provide basic, applicable information pertinent to: 1. Protecting the quality of water emanating from mined water-sheds. 2. Providing for soil stabilization on mined areas. 3. Returning mined areas to surface resource production. 4. The feasibility of making mined areas esthetically acceptable. It was concluded that the following separate--yet intergrated--fields should be studied in order to obtain the desired information:

Ante los recientes estudios sobre la relación del impacto ambiental con las operaciones minero metalúrgicas, se ejecutaron acciones legales que contrarresten los efectos detrimentales de los efluentes líquidos, gaseosos y sólidos de las plantas metalúrgicas. En este sentido, el presente texto plantea el uso intensivo de las aguas del drenaje de la mina Cerro de Pasco a través de la planta de extración por solventes y electrodeposición en la recuperación de cobre cadótico, con la finalidad de reducir los costos de producción y la contaminación ambiental. Así también se plantea el reemplazo del proceso de neutralización clásica con óxido de calcio por el método de la bioxidación, neutralización y precipitación de los elementos contaminantes en los efluentes mineros metalúrgicos de la cuenca de Yanamate, transformando el desarrollo de la minera Cerro de Pasco.

COAL preparation, or coal washing, is not a new subject to the Pacific Northwest. Most of the coals mined in this state smaller than lump, and nearly all such sizes mined on the Pacific slope of the Cascade mountains, require washing before marketing. A large proportion is being put through some washing process, but coal washing in this state, has not reached the efficiency it is practicable to obtain. In fields where the coal, as mined, contains less impurities, where working conditions make it practicable to eliminate some of these impurities under- ground, or where a large proportion of the run-of-mine coal is lump, coal preparation does not present the problem it does in our local field. Here the coal is associated with considerable impurities and the slack, or steam sizes, aggregate about 80 per cent. of the output. Therefore, approximately 80 per cent. of the coal mined must be washed to become a valuable fuel. Washing then becomes a major operation, as hand picking of the 20 per cent. of lump is a standard and comparatively simple operation. Some coal beds here are so interstratified with bone, of a more or less massive nature, that hand picking of lump is not economically efficient. In such cases the coal must be crushed fine enough for it to be freed from the bone, so that the two may be separated. Coal cleaning in this field, therefore, must receive skilled attention to purify this fuel and raise its stand- ard. Without greater efficiency in cleaning, the importation of coal from outside the state will be even greater than in the past.

The Mining Association of Canada launched the Towards Sustainable Mining initiative in 2004. TSM’s goal is to improve the mining industry’s performance by aligning its actions with the priorities and values of Canadians. The initiative currently includes performance indicators for four areas: tailings management, energy use and greenhouse gas management, external outreach and corporate crisis management planning. Over the past year, the association has been designing a performance assessment and verification system for these performance areas, as its members prepare to move to external verification of their performance in 2006. The presentation will describe the initiative and its evolution, as well as the challenges faced in developing a verification system applicable to an entire sector.

In 2015, the Subtropolis Mine in Petersburg, OH, experienced a massive ground collapse that continues to grow over time. Horizontal stress effects have affected the roof at this operation in the past and may have played a large role in this collapse. Horizontal stress can impact the roof and floor stability and endanger the health and safety of underground stone miners. Mines experiencing damaging effects from horizontal stress typically find that the principal stress direction is the same throughout the mine and the region. At the Subtropolis Mine the principal horizontal stress direction appears to change as conditions change and differs from the regional horizontal stress, particularly near the collapse or other roof fall areas. The growth over time of this collapse and other roof falls have been captured and analyzed using geologic mapping, 3D LiDAR scanning, numerical modeling and geographic information systems like ArcGIS. Utilizing these tools to better understand sitespecific conditions can be critical to reducing the potential of massive ground collapses in the underground limestone industry.

This paper describes work done by Placer Dome Technical Services Limited, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, and Nautilus Minerals Inc. in support of the conceptual design of a subsea mining system. It describes an overall concept design plus specific studies into mechanical excavation at depth. The concept design includes one or more subsea excavators connected to a suction riser, which transports the cut material to a shipboard dewatering and offloading system. A multi-phase investigation was performed into the mechanical excavation of seafloor massive sulphides at depths of around 1600m. Rock samples were recovered and tested for rock properties and cutting behaviour. A small pick drum cutter was procured and tested on a representative concrete slab in a lab and tested again while submerged in a test tank. Finally the cutter was tested on a massive sulphide ore body at 1600m depth. The cutting performance results, e.g. pick forces and specific energies, should provide valuable input to the design of future full scale subsea mining systems.

As part of the Bureau of Mines critical and strategic minerals program in Alaska, 34 high-purity chromian spinel samples were analyzed for trace and major element geochemistry and mineralogy. The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and chemical techniques. Systematic differences in chemistry are evident when samples collected from the Chugach Mountains and their related extension are compared with chromian spinel samples collected from interior Alaska. Compared with the Chugach samples, the interior Alaska samples have higher average amounts of A1203, Fe203, Ti02, and NiO, have lower average amounts of FeO and Cr203, and exhibit greater dispersion in values. Considerable mineralogical variability of chromian spinel exists between and within individual Alaskan chromite-bearing ultramafic complexes. Of 34 samples analyzed, 25 samples are magnesiochromite, 5 are chromite, 3 are spinel, and 1 is hercynite. As a group the interior Alaska samples have a smaller average unit cell dimension than the Chugach group of samples. The chemical and mineralogical differences between the two groups of samples can be attributed to different genetic histories and may have implications for locating chromian spinel deposits amenable to standard beneficiating techniques.

WELCOME to the world-class Cripple Creek district where gold exploration and production continue 95 years after the initial discovery. More than 21 million troy ounces of gold have been recovered, valued at greater than $7.8 billion using today's gold price ($371/oz). The Cripple Creek district is localized within and around the margins of a silica-undersaturated alkalic diatreme-intrusive complex. The diatreme appears to be comprised of three sub-basins: 1) a sub-basin east of the Cresson (Fig. 1); 2) a southwestern sub-basin between Victor and Cripple Creek; and 3) a northwestern sub¬basin within which the Globe Hill and Ironclad pits (Fig. 1) are located. The recognition of three separate basins was made by G. F. Loughlin and A. H. Koschmann (1935, Fig. 8) who prepared a contour map on the floor and walls of the composite Cripple Creek basin. The northwestern and southwestern sub-basins are apparent due to the discontinuous exposures of a partially exhumed ridge of Precambrian rocks (Fig. 1). The separation of the eastern and southwestern sub-basins was recognized in mine exposures where a fault-bounded ridge line extends from the vicinity of the Ajax mine toward the Precambrian "island" (Fig. 1).

The central and southern Appalachian Mountains were the major sources of domestically produced gold throughout the first half of the 19th century and continue to yield gold today. Small amounts of gold were probably extracted by the Indians and the Spaniards but the first documented report of gold in the region was made by Thomas Jefferson who found, in the Rappahannock River of Virginia in 1782, a 1.8 kg (4 lb) lump of gold ore that yielded 26 g (0.85 oz). Gold was subsequently discovered in North Carolina between 1793 and 1799, in Virginia in 1806, in South Carolina in 1827, in Georgia in 1829, and in Alabama about 1830 (Becker, 1894-5; Pardee and Park, 1948). Production climbed to more than 933 kg/a (30,000 oz per year) between 1830 and 1852, but dropped sharply after the California gold rush in 1849 as experienced miners moved west in search of bigger and easier stakes. The Civil War briefly halted gold mining in the Appalachians, but production rose to an average of about 249 kg/a (8,000 oz per year) from 1865 until 1878 and to about 404 kg/a (13,000 oz per year) from 1881 until 1915 when it again fell to near nil (Pardee and Park, 1948). Minor resurgences occurred in the 1930s and 1940s. Although there has been no reported production in recent years, it is likely that "weekend panners" still remove hundreds of ounces from streams annually. The total reported production for the area through 1959 is more than 77 t (2.5 million oz). This paper reports some initial findings of a long-term project designed to investigate the mineralogy, chemistry, mode of occurrence, and petrology of gold occurrences in the Appalachians. The goal of the initial phase was to determine the compositional range of gold in the Appalachians as a step toward deciding if sufficient variations were present to allow the definition of "compositional signatures." The very few published data on gold fineness in the Appalachians are based on assays that commonly include gold and silver from several mineral species. Analyses in the present study were performed on individual grains of electrum using a spot size of 10 µm x 10 µm to 100 µm X 100 µm (394 X 394 micro in. to 3,940 X 3,940 micro in.), and thus reveal the true composition of the principal precious metal-bearing phase.

IN 1949 an orebody containing some 10 billion lb of recoverable rare earth metals was discovered in the Mountain Pass district of San Bernardino County, California.' The following year Molybdenum Corp. of America purchased a number of claims at the deposit and a mill on the property which had been constructed to process the district's gold ores. Average composition of ore from the San Bernardino deposit is less than 0.1 pct Tho2, 25 to 35 pct calcite, 10 pct rare earth oxides, 15 to 20 pct silica, and 30 to 40 pct barite.' Rare earth content of the ore analyzes 50.7 pct CeO2, 4.2 pct Pr6O11, 11.7 pct Nd2O3;, 1.3 pct Sm2O3,, and 34.3 pct La2O3 and others.' By floating the barite and depressing the bastna-site, Molybdenum Corp. of America produced a concentrate that contained 60 to 70 pct rare earth oxides. More than 25 pct of the rare earths, however, was lost in flotation. It seemed likely that a more economical method could be found. At the present time most of the rare earths in the concentrates are converted to rare earth chlorides, which are either fed to ion exchange columns for separation of the individual rare earths or reduced to misch metal. Current investigation shows that solvent extraction may achieve this separation more economically than ion exchange. The study reported here was undertaken to develop an economical method of preparing a pure rare earth nitrate mixture from California bastnasite ore. Results indicated that more than 98 pct of the rare earths could be recovered. Several possibilities were considered for processing bastnasite ore, but only the method outlined in Fig. 1 was investigated. This involved leaching the calcined ore with nitric acid. The nitric acid process is discussed under the following headings: 1) calcination of the ore, 2) leaching of calcine, 3) filtration studies, 4) solvent extraction, and 5) nitric acid recovery. Calcination: Since California bastnasite ore contains 25 to 35 pct calcite and about 10 pct bastnasite, calcination was needed to reduce the violence of reaction with nitric acid. Weight losses of 26 to 30 pct were obtained by calcining the ore at 900°C for I hr or at 800°C for 4 hr. Longer periods resulted in no further weight loss. The Bureau of Mines measured the energy requirements for the spark ig-nition in air of Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal dust, lycopodium spores, and polyethylene powder with a 1.2-L furnace and 8-L and 20-L chambers. Thermal autoignition temperatures of the same dusts were mea-sured in the 1.2-L furnace. Electrical ignition requirements are given in terms of both effective spark gap energies, [ ] and stored circuit energies, 1/2 CE2. The measured order of electrical ignitability for the three dusts is consistent with the data of other researchers; however, the absolute values are systematically higher, probably because of higher flow and turbulence levels in the chambers used and lower electrical efficiency in the circuit used here. The temperature dependence of the lean limit of flammability for lyco-podium was measured wi th the 1.2-L sys tem, and those measurements con--firm the applicability of the modified Burgess-Wheeler law to a dust. Due to experimental complexities, the minimum ignition energies for dusts may not reflect intrinsic flammability behavior. However, some valuable information may be obtained from the relative ignition energies of various dusts at ambient and elevated temperatures. In addition, the concept of minimum electrical ignition energies for homogeneous gas mixtures is reevaluated theoretically.

The year 1977 generally was a year of growth in overall world mineral industry activity, although there were downturns in major elements of the world's iron and steel industries. The sharp upturns in market economy nation activities that were noted in 1976, following the reduced performance levels of 1975, were moderated, and in the centrally planned economy nations, overall mineral industry activity apparently continued to increase, but at a pace in keeping with that of 1916 rather than at the higher rates of the earlier 1976's. Noteworthy during the year, if only in a negative sense, was the inability of world powers to reach any significant agreement on issues relating to deep seabed mining. Interest from a commercial viewpoint centered around deposits or so-called manganese nodules. These materials, which indeed are chiefly manganese in terms of their content on a quantitative basis, really were of commercial interest primarily far their copper, nickel, and cobalt content. Participants at the Third United Nations Law of the Sea Conference looked into seabed mining rights, but reached no mutually agreeable decisions.

The Runruno Gold Project is located on the island of Luzon, approximately 200 miles north of Manilla in the Philippines. The mine is an open cut operation and uses the proven BIOX® and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes to recover gold, and the ASTER™ process for detoxification of the CIL residue prior to discharge to the Residue Storage Impoundment (RSI). Work to date has defined a mineral resource of 1.39 million ounces (Moz) of gold, and the operation will produce 96 700 oz of gold per annum over a mine life of 10.4 years. The BIOX circuit is designed to treat 140 000 t/y of concentrate with a design capacity of 404 t/d of concentrate at a design sulfide sulfur grade of 17% S2-.The Runruno BIOX Plant is the first application of the Outotec BIOX Generation III design principles, focussing on ease of operation and maintainability. During development and implementation, the project team focussed on identifying opportunities to optimise the capital efficiency while not compromising on the operability or overall efficiency of the process or the equipment. The BIOX plant also incorporates the latest developments in the design of the BIOX agitators for more efficient mixing and gas dispersion. This paper will discuss some of the critical aspects and decisions taken during the development and implementation of the BIOX Process at the Runruno Gold Project. The paper will highlight some of the factors affecting the commissioning process as well as the improvements seen through the introduction of the Generation III BIOX design principles. Mining operations rely on high-duty, mobile and semimobile equipment to move rock, process ore, maintain roads and sustain site services. Typical mining fleets combine loading and hauling assets with production, logistics and maintenance equipment, which are all expected to operate at high load factors, over long hours and in harsh environments. The mining industry is under pressure to decarbonize their operations and to transition to lower-emission technologies. While decarbonization options are well understood for stationary process equipment, challenges remain regarding how to decarbonize heavy-duty mobile emission sources. This article presents the methodology and findings of a structured assessment of low- and zero-emission pathways for mobile mining equipment. The approach is data driven and equipment centric, evaluating technology readiness, commercial and technical viability, and the financial implications of alternative powertrains including battery electric, hybrid electric, hydrogen fuel cell/combustion and low-carbon fuels such as renewable diesel and biodiesel. Supporting infrastructure requirements are also reviewed. Baseline attributes such as engine/motor power, duty cycles, energy intensity and typical purchase price are compiled into an equipment matrix, with alternatives matched by output power to ensure performance comparability. Capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) are calculated conservatively from public sources, with OPEX combining energy/fuel costs and maintenance rates that reflect powertrain complexity.

O Steel Frame é um sistema construtivo eficiente e sustentável. Sua estrutura é em perfis de aço e pode suportar até 4 pavimentos, e sua fundação é em radie. Por isso, os perfis da base são revestidos de manta asfáltica para serem protegidos de agentes degradantes. Após algum tempo, a manta perde sua eficácia, expondo o perfil ao meio. O objetivo dessa pesquisa é explicar a corrosão do perfil, através da investigação por MEV, EDS e teste de tração, mostrando a influência do concreto no mesmo, mediante a determinação de suas características mecânicas após o contato. Os resultados mostram difusão dos elementos do concreto no aço, afetando suas propriedades mecânicas através do aumento de limite de resistencia a tração e redução do módulo de elasticidade. Houve também redução na superfície de zinco, mostrando principio de corrosão.

The Bureau of Mines has tested a dewatering technique for phosphatic clay waste. The technique utilizes a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO), that forms strong, stable flocs that can be dewatered on a static screen followed by further dewatering on a rotary screen or trommel. In field tests conducted in central Florida, clay wastes containing approximately 4 pct solids have been consolidated to greater than 20 pct solids. The rate at which PEO-treated material continues to dewater in a mine cut also was monitored. Preliminary results indicate that PEO-treated material will dewater to 30 pct solids in 80 days. Pretreatment of phosphatic clay waste with lime lowers the PEO dosage required for dewatering.

"This paper attempts to provide a simple analytical solution for the calculation of the stress tensor induced in a two-dimensional elastic ring of a brittle material subjected to general loading on either its internal or external curved surfaces. Airy stress functions and Michell’s expression in polar coordinates are used, and parametric studies are performed to investigate the influence of loading angle and the geometrical aspect ratio of the ring on the maximum induced tensile stress. INTRODUCTIONA proper and accurate estimation of the tensile strength of a given material is a crucial step in many engineering projects; in particular in rock cutting, since rocks are much weaker in tension than in compression or shear. Both direct and indirect laboratory techniques such as the direct uniaxial pulling test, the Brazilian indirect tensile test (also known as the split cylinder test), and the ring test have been proposed and developed to estimate rock tensile strength. Among these, the ring test, initially suggested by Ripperger and Davids (1946), has become particularly appealing for its ease of sample preparation and its unique breakage mechanism in almost a pure tensile mode. Unlike the Brazilian test in which high shear stresses developed in the vicinity of the contact could interfere with the tensile breakage of the disc specimen, a tensile failure starts away from the loading platens in a ring test (Hobbs, 1964)."

On the basis of actual parameter of wall control blast in Nanfeng mine, China, the process of dynamic stress changing between two column charges was studied recently for a presplit-cushion blast by holographic photoelasticity. In the experimental model, two holes were simultaneously detonated from both ends (four ignition points). The bottom of the holes were loaded more than other parts (heavy charge). Under these conditions, four consecutive isochromatic fringe patterns at different times were acquired in one loading run, and the characteristics of the stress distributions were compared at different places and times in the holes. It was found that interaction types of stress waves vary along the holes. The theory is posed that the stress wave which is formed by the interaction of earlier producing P wave and later S wave along a distributed line charge is the most important part in all stress waves. Research indicates that a heavy charge in the bottom of the holes is crucial to producing a presplit-cushion effect at the bottom. "End Effect" doesn't affect the magnitude of stress along linking lines between the bottoms. The chief fields of the "End Effect" are also explained in the paper.

Exploratory drilling in South Central Texas for the year 1944 showed a marked increase over that of 1943 and resulted in a similar increase in new fields discovered. In this area, which comprises the 30 counties included in district No. I, Oil and Gas Division, Railroad Commission of Texas,? 61 exploratory wells were drilled during 1944 as compared with 29 exploratory wells drilled during 1943, or an increase of over 100 per cent. Three new oil fields, two new gas fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered during the year, as compared with one new oil field and one new gas field discovered during 1943. These new fields were the result of exploratory drilling throughout the district along the Wilcox trend and the deeper Edwards lime trend, which was started during the previous year. The Wilcox trend yielded the new Loma iilta-Wilcox oil field and the San Caja gas-* tlistillate field, both in McMullen County. The Charlotte field, in Atascosa County, was discovered along the deeper Edwards lime trend. These three discoveries were of considerable importance and subsequent development should indicate the desirability of continued exploration along these trends. The other three discoveries, United oil field in Guadalupe County, Pederson gas field in Milam County and Van Cleve gas field in Zavalla County, were of minor importance. Charlotte Field, Atascosa County, was discovered by the Humble Oil and Refining Company's No. 3 Pruitt, completcd on Aug. 9, 1944, flowing 176 bbl. per day, 3/16-in. choke, 710 lb. tubing, 475 lb. casing pressures, 37.7º A.P.I. gravity, from the top of the Edwards lime from 6917 to 6923 ft. Two oil wells were completed during the year in this field. This discovery is 14 miles southwest of the same company's Imogene field, also producing from the Edwards lime but with considerable difference in reservoir characteristics. The discovery of this field is the result of surface geology and subsequent seismograph survey of the area. Loma Alta-Wilcox Field, McMullen County, was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Company's No. I Atkinson, completed on June I, 1944, flowing 102 bbl. per day, 9/64-in. choke, 1900 lb. tubing pressure, 37º A.P.I. gravity, from Wilcox sand from 6866 to 6869 ft. after being drilled to a total depth of 7185 ft. This discovery is the result of subsurface geology and an extensive seismograph survey of the entire area. Sun Caja Field, McMullen County, was discovered by Edwin M. Jones No. 2-C Ezzell, completed on June 2, 1944 as a dual completion in the Wilcox sands, flowing 1,740,000 cu. ft. gas with 53 bbl. distillate, 1/4-in. choke, 2035 lb. tubing pressure, 53.2º A.P.I. gravity, from sand 6416 to 6453 ft. and flowing 2,000,000 cu. ft. of gas with 127 bbl. distillate, 1/4-in. choke, 2500 lb. tubing pressure, 50º A.P.I. gravity, from sand 6889 to 6916 ft., after being drilled to a total depth of 7264 ft.
