Dissociation and vaporization of gold chlorides and bromides were investigated by a static pressure method and by Knudsen cell mass spectrometer. Two distinct chlorine and three distinct bromine pressure-temperature relation-ships were observed for the respective salts. The chlorine pressures are attributed to the dissociation of Au2Cl6 and Au2C12, and the bromine pressures to the dissociation of Au2Br6, Au2Br4, and AU2Br2, These pressure-temperature relationships were used to calculate dissociation pressure equations, enthalpies, and entropies of dissociation for each salt. Mass analysis of the vapors over AU2Cls between 83° and 152° C confirmed the existence of gaseous AU2C16. Ionization potential of this molecule is 11.0±0.1 ev and enthalpy of vaporization is 28.l±2.0 kcal/mole. Mass analysis of the vapors over the gold bromides detected only Bra in the temperature range 15°-150° C.

Success of a blasting pattern in Blasting-off-the-solid (BOS) in Bord (Room) & Pillar method of coal mining is judged by the percentage of pull achieved vis-à-vis the yield of coal produced in a blasted round. Improper blast design and distribution of explosives in shot holes normally causes poor breakage i.e. a major portion of shot holes left unbroken resulting into reduced yield per blast. Over and above the disturbance to the roof is also due to excessive vibration caused by explosive energy not properly utilized in fragmentation.

Slurry pipelining, as now under-stood and practised, can only command marginal interest in Canada, as long-distance railway freight charges in this country are generally lower than slurry pipeline tariffs. Several alternatives to conventional slurry transmission are, however, now emerging, and two such alternatives are briefly discussed with reference to coal pipelining. In one, coal is transported as a suspension in oil; the other contemplates the movement of paste "slugs." Preliminary economic estimates indicate that the resulant process simplification and adoption of common carrier principles could lead to cost reductions that might make Western coal competitive with imported fuel in the power generating stations of eastern Canada. R ECENT appraisals of slurry pipelining techniques, some-what incongruously 'based upon the performance of successful installations (1,2), are making it increasingly apparent that current solids pipelining methods can only command marginal interest as methods of bulk commodity transportation (3). Eddy current separators are increasingly used by the auto shredder operators to produce higher grade of nonferrous metal concentrate for recycling. While this increases the unit price of the concentrate, metal losses through inefficient metal recovery quickly offset the price differential. We show how to optimize the eddy current separation system at the shredder to maximize mate- rial throughput, nonferrous metal recovery and grade of the nonferrous metal concentrate.

The coking time has considerable influence on the throughput of a coke oven, and for this reason a large number of papers dealing with the relationship between coking time and the different operating variables have been published. Although all factors known to influence the coking time have been studied, agreement has not been reached on several questions.2/3 Therefore, it appears worthwhile to evaluate any data that become available during investigations of the carbonizing properties of various coals and coal blends. Because it is expected that reports covering several different phases of this problem will be forthcoming as additional data-become available, the following study of the relationship between coking time and bulk density represents a report of progress on the overall investigation of factors influencing the coking time in slot-type ovens. The practice of including coarse coal in the blend going to the ovens to obtain increased bulk densities is well known. Similar increases have been realized by adding small quantities of oil to the coal mix. Although it would appear that such procedures provide inexpensive methods for increasing the capacity of existing coke-oven installations, Ramsburg and McGurl4/ point out that this increase is possible only if the additional coal can be carbonized in the same coking time as regularly employed without using abnormally high flue temperatures. This statement is in substantial-agreement with the position of Auvil and others5/ and implies that any change in bulk density may be accompanied by a corresponding change in coking time. On the other hand, a recent review of proposed methods for calculating the time required for carbonization6/ includes a number of equations that completely ignore the effects of variations in bulk density.

The consolidation of ceramic fiber reinforced metal matrix composites is a key process step in the synthesis of high performance composite systems. A simulation tool has recently been developed for predicting the evolution of the composites internal state microstructural variables (eg. relative density, fiber microbendinglfracture, and chemical reaction layer thickness at the fiber-matrix interface) during the consolidation processing of spray deposited composite mono-tapes. A Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) scheme is used in conjunction with the simula-tion tool to design near optimal process paths that minimize fiber damage and reaction product thickness while simultaneously maximizing the composites relative density. The microstruc-tural evolution depends nonlinearly on the process conditions and therefore the scheme uses a constantly updated linearization of the model to optimize the input process variable vector. A control simulation is presented to illustrate the performance of the design scheme and to assess the feasibility of its use for the achievement of goal state microstructures at the completion of consolidation cycles.

"Previous studies have shown that the floatability of chalcopyrite in seawater at highly alkaline conditions is significantly affected by the presence of clays. The reason is that the species of calcium and magnesium present in seawater under those conditions may act as a bridge between the surfaces of clay and chalcopyrite, generating massive aggregates that then depress. In this context, the objective of this work is to analyze the impact of pretreated seawater with low amount of calcium and magnesium ions on the recovery of a sulphide copper mineral with high kaolinite content as clay. The seawater pre-treatment is done by the addition of sodium hydroxide in a high carbon dioxide environment. The chemical reactions realized under these conditions lead to the formation and precipitation of calcium and magnesium species that are subsequently removed by vacuum filtration. The pre-treated seawater is then used in flotation tests at pH 11 for copper sulphide, where the mineral is synthetically prepared by mixtures of chalcopyrite, kaolinite, and quartz. When comparing the flotation results for different types of water, including seawater and pre-treated seawater, a significant effect is observed: as the seawater hardness decreases, which comprises the calcium and magnesium ions, the recovery of chalcopyrite is increased. However, the effect is markedly enhanced in the presence of kaolinite. Therefore, the results indicate that sodium hydroxide and carbon dioxide are able to remove different species of calcium and magnesium from seawater and could improve the chalcopyrite recovery with high kaolinite content. INTRODUCTIONIn many cases, mineral deposits are found in arid areas with little access to water resources. Water is a fundamental element to carry out the unit operations that achieved the separation of valuable minerals (especially in concentration operations). Seawater has acquired an interesting role in recent years (Cisternas and Moreno, 2014); in fact, it seems to be one of the few viable options to ensure the sustainability of the mining industry in arid zones. At present, there are numerous experiences of industries that use or have used this resource, either by submitting the seawater to a desalination treatment by reverse osmosis or by applying it directly, without desalting. The latter case may involve significant economic benefits (for example, by avoiding the investment of building a desalination plant) and in some cases some operational benefits. A positive aspect is that in general terms the foaming in the saline medium is much more efficient compared to fresh water (Quinn et al., 2014; Castro et al., 2010). Some reports show that the foaming doses required to achieve a certain quality of bubbles are remarkably reduced, reaching exceptional cases such as Xstrata's Raglan concentrator, where it did not even include foaming to carry out the operation. This fact is quite promising, considering that some researchers have stated that controlling the quality of bubbles and foam could float minerals through coarse particles. This would lead to multiple benefits, such as energy savings by avoiding excessive grinding and a lower presence of fine ore that causes major problems in water recovery operations by gravitation (such as thickening) and in tailings management. However, seawater also causes significant challenges in multiple operations (Jeldres et al., 2017, 2016; Castro et al., 2010), as for example in minerals with high clay content (Uribe et al., 2017). In fresh water, the presence of clays minerals in ores is already a major problem in the flotation stages since the operation becomes difficult to be controlled, and operators are commonly forced to increase the consumption of reagents because the collectors are deposited on the clays' surfaces reducing froth stability (Farrokhpay and Bradshaw, 2012). This paper applies geostatistical tools in Measure While Drilling (MWD) data to estimate the probability distribution of values in all the points of the studied domain in order to assess the continuity of rock classes between boreholes. The analyses carried out by Ghosh et al. (2018) and Navarro et al. (2019) have been used as starting point of this work to classify the geotechnical rock condition in four classes: solid rock, fractured rock, cave- in rock and cavity. From it, an application for the geotechnical rock condition of orebodies have been developed, aiming at characterizing the rock before the charging the holes to minimize unexpected rock conditions and to address issues associated with charging and blasting operations. Such problems are closely related with non-optimal rock fragmentation after blasting.

The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore bodies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

With the current economic situation, the demand for nickel and other base metals has fallen significantly. More than 440 kt/yr world nickel capacity has been taken out of production within the last year, or more than 25% of the total [1]. This situation is similar to that at the end of 1970?s and it will take a number of years for the demand to recover to the levels before the economic downturn. In the meantime, the challenges facing the industry have increased due to diminishing ore grades, more inaccessible and complex deposits, mounting capital and operating costs and the various external pressures which include socio-economic, environmental, and energy challenges. All industries will be faced with paying the ?total ownership costs? in the future. This will only increase the burden on the industry. How to cope with this in what Thomas Friedman calls the ?Energy-Climate Era? [2] will be the most pressing challenge for the next generation of metallurgists and managers. It will force us to take a broader view of the problems and the solutions beyond mere technical. The metallurgists, engineers and project managers will have to look at the overall projects and their objectives in designing the solutions, requiring a top-down strategic approach.

Backfill is increasingly used in underground mines, as it can help reduce the environmental impact from mining operations. However, the primary objective of backfilling is to provide safe working space for miners, by improving ground stability conditions. As cement is often added to the backfill, a critical issue is the determination of the required backfill strength (cohesion) due to the binder. This value is usually obtained from a solution proposed by Mitchell and co-workers, in the early 1980?s, for stopes with an exposed backfill face. This paper presents a brief review of the Mitchell et al. solution, with some of its main limitations. Some of the recently developed solutions for backfill design are then summarized and discussed.

The nature of adsorbed calcium carboxylates (oleate and stearate) has been investigated by in-situ/ex-situ Fourier transform infrared internal reflection spectroscopy (FTIR/IRS). Previous spectroscopic studies in alkaline solution have shown that adsorbed carboxylate is characterized by a C-O stretching vibration at about 1550 em?1 for less than monolayer coverage. Similar results were found in this study. More specifically, in this study such a singlet at 1550 cm-1 was found for LB monolayers of calcium distearate transferred as a condensed layer at a high film pressure to the surfaces of fluorite and germanium. Normally the spectrum of bulk calcium distearate reveals a doublet at 1575 and 1540 cm-1, characteristic of a three dimensional 7-fold coordination for calcium carboxylate complexes. This doublet is generally found for carboxylate multilayers formed by spontaneous adsorption at the surface of calcium minerals. In this regard, the spectral evidence suggests that whenever the calcium dicarboxylate is constrained at a surface as a condensed layer, the 7-fold coordination can not be satisfied and the surface carboxylate is forced into a two dimensional symmetrical coordination with a singlet at 1550 cm-1. On the other hand, if the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer calcium distearate film is transferred at a low film pressure the doublet is observed. This analysis is further confirmed by the spectral results for LB transferred calcium distearate monolayers at a hydrophobic silicon surface. Even though these are condensed monolayers formed at high film pressure, the carboxylate group, oriented away from the surface, is no longer constrained by the surface force field, and thus exhibits the characteristic doublet of the bulk calcium distearate salt.

"Louvicourt mine began operation in 1994. It is located in northwestern Quebec, 20 km east of Val d’Or. The mine is owned by Aur Resources (30%), which operates the mine, Teck/Cominco (25%) and Novicourt (45%). By the end of 2002 there were approximately 280 employees working on the site, including contractors. Production averages 4300 tons per day, working a massive sulphide body located between 415 m and 920 m underground.Maintenance expenses represent 27% to 29% of the operating costs, and the maintenance personnel represents 34% of the total workforce (including electrical, mechanical and concentrator maintenance staff). Considering these figures, in addition to capital costs and indirect costs, such as energy (electricity, fuel, gas, etc.), it is worthwhile to pay attention to how things are done in order to protect such investment. Every task performed to help understand the impact of Louvicourt’s practices must to be seen as an investment in the reliability of its operation."

German manufacturer DBT signed a contract to supply a sixth automated-plow long-wall system to Shenyang Coal in Liaoning province in northeastern China. This most recent order occurred just weeks after DBT signed a contract to deliver a fifth automated-plow longwall system to Datong Coal in Shanxi province. The plow will go into service at Shenyang Coal’s Hongyang Mine. Mining conditions at the mine, coupled with DBT’s advanced automated-plow technology, means that the system has the potential to become one of the world’s most productive thin-seam longwalls.

"After nearly four decades of decline, the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP, or black lung) in the United States has been on the rise since the mid-1990s (Laney et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011; Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016). Particularly alarming is the number of cases of rapidly progressive disease such as progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016; Laney et al., 2017). A recent study by Laney et al. (2017) observed 192 U.S. coal miners participating in the Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) who had been diagnosed with PMF since 2000. Of the 163 (85 percent) that had a normal radiograph on file to use as a baseline, 27 (17 percent) of these individuals had progressed from a normal radiograph to PMF diagnosis in less than 10 years. Moreover, 162 (84 percent) of the individuals in that study worked in Kentucky, West Virginia or Virginia, and 169 (88 percent) had only ever mined underground. Blackley et al. (2016) also reported on a group of 60 PMF cases that were discovered by a single black lung clinic in eastern Kentucky. Since seeking care at such clinics and participation in the CWHSP are voluntary, and could be influenced by a number of factors, there has been some concern that these reports may overestimate the degree of resurgence in severe disease (i.e., versus disease that was previously under-reported). Even so, they highlight a critical need to better understand the cause(s) of disease development and progression — such that effective interventions can be devised.The notable uptick in CWP and PMF rates among miners in central Appalachia has led to this region being called a hot spot for disease (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2017). While the geographic clustering has been well documented (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Wade et al., 2011; Wang et al., 2013), the root cause is still unknown. Leading hypotheses have focused on the relative amount of rock being cut along with coal in many central Appalachian mines, as there has been a tendency to mine increasingly thinner coal seams over the past couple of decades (Laney et al., 2010; Schatzel, 2009). This shift has likely been accompanied by changes in specific dust exposure factors, such as increased abundance of particularly harmful dust constituents (e.g., silica or silicates) or increased frequency of harmful exposures (e.g., due to work in more risky environments) (Pollock et al., 2010; Blackley et al., 2016; Cohen et al., 2016; Douglas et al., 1986)."

The Mining Annual Report (RAL) is an obligation for every current owner of a brazilian mining process which is already undergoing extraction. This document is basically composed by the company’s annual book balance, where is possible to educe informations that allow to evaluate the mineral market behavior. This research gathered filtered data linked with RAL production and technical responsability between 2010 and 2017, gotten by the Information Access Law, without the real CNPJ of each company, in order to preserve their identity. The results allow to quantify the Brazilian mining production during the period, illustrating that approximately 46% of the companies can be classified as micro, 30% as small, 20% as medium and 4% as large mining companies. It was observed that the micros concentrate the most part of technical responsibles who sign for more than three mines.

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. We studied mineralogical characteristics of the vermiculite samples from seven mines in China. We found three types of interstratified structures in the investigated samples: 1:1 regular interstratified structure, segregated interstratified structure, and random interstratified structure. The vermiculite samples from six mines are mainly composed of phlogopite?vermiculite interstratified minerals, and the samples from the other mine are composed of chlorite?vermiculite interstratified mineral. The samples with phlogopite?vermiculite structure have high contents of K2O, TiO2 and Na2O. The samples with chlorite?vermiculite structure have the highest contents of MgO and Al2O3. The cation exchange capacity of the samples is 17.3?99.0 mmol/100g.The exchangeable cations of phlogopite?vermiculite samples from Weili Mine mainly include Na+ and Ca2+, while those of phlogopite?vermiculite samples from Tongguan Mine mainly include Mg2+ and Ca2+. The thermal expansion ratio of the samples is between 9 and 32. The exfoliated vermiculite products from Weili Mine have the best mechanical strength.

Powered haulage continues to be a large safety concern for the mining industry, accounting for approximately 50%of the mining fatal accidents every year. Among these fatal accidents, haul-truck-related accidents are the most common, with 6 of 28 and 6 of 27 fatal accidents occurring in 2017 and 2018, respectively. To better understand why these accidents continue to occur and what can be done to prevent them, researchers reviewed the 91 haul-truck-related fatal accidents that occurred in the USA from 2005 to 2018 and performed bow-tie analyses using the final reports published by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The analyses explore the context of the accidents with a focus on the initiating event, event outcome, hazards present, and possible preventative and mitigative controls. Overall, the vast majority of the accidents resulted in a haul truck colliding with the environment, and the majority of these events were initiated by loss of situational awareness or loss of control. The majority of the hazards were related to design and organizational controls. The results of this study suggest a need to investigate operator decision-making and organizational controls and to focus on improving design and operation controls such as mine design and operational procedures.
