O Escândio é um elemento do grupo das terras raras que apesar de ser tão abundante quanto metais como o chumbo, raramente é encontrado concentrado nos minérios. A produção de Sc atual é inferior a 10t/ano proveniente do processamento de outros minérios e resíduos e também da recuperação de sucatas. Minérios lateríticos de níquel podem conter até 350ppm de Escândio e os resíduos do seu processamento podem ser ainda mais concentrados. Neste trabalho foi caracterizado um resíduo do processamento de minério de Níquel e avaliado o processo de lixiviação para reocupação do Escândio contido. Os principais componentes do resíduo são Fe, Cu, Ni e Co e o Escândio é da ordem de 1000ppm. A lixiviação do Escândio mostrou-se mais dependente da temperatura do que da concentração de H+ e o processo de lixiviação proposto não foi seletivo para o Escândio sendo necessárias etapas subsequentes para purificação.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among operators of mobile equipment used in mining and construction. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy mobile equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of ingress/egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. Five hundred and eighty six operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

In this paper the system of an operative expert estimation of innovative policy of mining enterprise technological development on sustainable development principles, created in the laboratory of economic analysis, planning and management of Mining Institute after D A Kunayev is represented. It is based on application of technology of satellite navigation and global positioning system (GPS). It allows to estimate the geotechnological complex functioning efficiency in the automated mode and on the basis of the obtained results to develop a complex of management measures on the competitiveness increase, realised by means of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complex. The estimation of complex competitiveness is carried out on such basic aspects, as: technical, technological, organisational, ecological and economic as all of it give certain expenses and influence on complex overall performance. The major difference of the given approach is its realisation within the limits of the automated corporative management system of geotechnological complexes. It is based the fact that data of monitoring of complex's work will provide a sustainable development of geotechnological complex of mining enterprise.

This paper will address the feasibility of using low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) for an annular fill application where project conditions required pumping the LDCC material for distances of up to 16,000 feet. These conditions occurred during construction of the Kaneohe-Kailua Sewer Tunnel in Oahu, Hawaii, between 2014 and 2018. Located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, this 13-foot-diameter rock tunnel extends for approximately three miles from the Kaneohe Pre-Treatment Facility to the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. The tunnel was built to convey wastewater and provide temporary storage for peak wet weather flows entering the collection system, thereby reducing the potential for uncontrolled discharges. LDCC was chosen for this project partly due to its environmental benefits, which were essential for an application contiguous to the inland marine and coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean. In order to ensure optimal performance characteristics—compressive strength (with a requirement of 300 psi at 56 days), flowability, and light weight—were achieved, extensive testing of various LDCC products and mix designs was completed. The testing measured the initial set time of the LDCC as well as the compressive strength needed to reduce the quantity of grout lifts required for the project.

Keywords: Mixed extractant, Copper, Cobalt, Nickel, Synergistic effect During separation process of copper and cobalt from nickel sulphate solution, the effects of constitutions and compositions of mixed extractant D2EHPA and PC88-A or Cyanex 272, has been studied. In one step extraction cycle, the following results are obtained:[Ni]/[Co]>4000 and [Ni]/[Cu]>40000 in nickel sulphate solution, [Co]/[Ni]>1000 and [Co]/[Cu]>30000 in cobalt chlorinate solution, [Cu]/[Ni]>10000 and [Cu]/[Co]>200 in copper sulphate solution. It was elucidated that the above-mentioned synergistic mixtures can effectively separate cobalt and copper from nickel sulphate acid solution and achieve a greater synergistic effect.

Mercurian e1ectrum (Au-Ag-Hg alloy) is the principal Au-bearing phase in the massive sulphide ores at Trout Lake, Manitoba. The average composition of this phase (in wt %) is 49.2 % Ag. 38.7 % Au and 11.0 % Hg, with ranges of 17.34 to 76.47 % Ag, 1.62 to 79.86 % Au and 1.29 to 30.87 % Hg. Compositional variation reflects solid solution in the a-phase of the Ag-Au-Hg system. Backscatter electron imagery reveals systematic zoning and suggests a general crystallization sequence from metamorphic pore fluids of progressively Ag-rich compositions. Investigation of the occurrence of gold in mill products demonstrates that mercurian electrum accounts for over 90 % of the Au in Trout Lake ore. I Invisible" gold in pyrite (x = 0.72 ppm Au) and arsenopyrite (x 30.2 ppm Au) is confirmed by SIMS analyses, and accounts for 7-10 % of the Au in the ore, and 35 % of the Au lost to the tailings. The remaining 65 % of the Au lost to the tailings consists principally of mercurian electrum locked with pyrite. No significant losses of mercurian electrum in the size range amenable to flotation and/or regrinding is indicated.

A indústria siderúrgica global está buscando cada vez mais tecnologias para tornar o seu processo produtivo mais sustentável e competitivo. Uma das grandes oportunidades, já conhecida nesse setor, é a transformação dos seus resíduos em coprodutos para revenda no mercado. Por esse motivo, este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar as características físicas e químicas de duas escórias de aciaria por meio de uma caracterização tecnológica. Uma das amostras é proveniente do forno elétrico a arco (FEA), e a outra do conversor a oxigênio (Basic Oxygen Furnace - BOF ou Linz Donawitz - LD). Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa foram utilizadas: uma etapa de cominuição, análises de classificação granulométrica, composição química e microscopia determinativa pelo sistema TIMA-MIRA. Os resultados da caracterização permitiram identificar e quantificar os elementos químicos e fases presentes nas escórias, as quais apresentaram teores de ferro acima de 20%, teores de CaO acima de 25%, ausência de P e Na e predominância das fases CaSi, CaFe e ferrosos.

O presente trabalho buscou explorar a influência de um tratamento térmico de ressolubilização (70 minutos / 510ºC), antes da laminação convencional de uma liga de alumínio 7475-T7351. Para tal, duas amostras (com e sem o tratamento térmico) foram laminadas de 12,5 mm até 3 mm de espessura, após 13 passes com uma redução aproximada de 10% por passe. Com base nos resultados obtidos via microscopia óptica (Olympus, modelo GX51) e dureza Vickers (durômetro EMCOTEST, modelo Duravision 300), conclui-se que o tratamento térmico de ressolubilização adotado antes da laminação convencional da liga em estudo, propiciou modificações microestruturais e incremento na dureza quando comparada a amostra laminada sem prévio tratamento térmico de ressolubilização.

"Background The preponderance of Canada's coal resources is located in areas remote from high demand domestic users and at some significant distances from deepsea ports. This places great demands on the transportation system and has forced the coal and the transportation industries to adopt highly efficient methods of handling the product and hauling it to market position. Most of the coal not consumed in minemouth thermal power stations is carried by rail over lines operated by the two transcontinental railway systems, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. These rail networks are extensive and have the advantage (as compared to most other North American railways) of being able to handle coal movements from origin through to destination without interchange to other rail carriers. Coal SourcesWith exception of the coal produced in Cape Breton, Nova iScotia, all the significant shipping volumes in Canada emanate ifrom mines located in the three most westerly provinces. Figure I ishows the geographic distribution of the major mining operaitions shipping coal to domestic and export markets. The prinicipal routes and the tonnages carried (1980 calendar year) are ialso indicated. iThe 1980 shipping data are summarized in Table I. Saskatchewan lignite began moving from Bienfait to Thunder Bay by CP Rail unit trains in mid-1981 at the rate of one million tonnes per year. The product is handled through Thunder Bay Terminals and delivered directly to a nearby Ontario Hydro electrical generating station."

The Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research has been developing models of wireless signal propagation in underground coal mines since 2007. The current mine propagation modeling software, named COMMS, is able to locate potential broadcast points for underground wireless mesh systems and estimate their coverage. COMMS utilizes programmed routines to calculate necessary values to both quantitatively and qualitatively solve and analyze predicted coverage areas. The program approximates the spatial relationships that are encountered, such as ventilation regulators, belts and other obstructions. Using this model for propagation allows the optimal communications node locations to be calculated, by using lessons learned from current installations and experience with the new technology. In addition, the optimization can be calculated by checking all possible combinations of broadcast locations. This paper compares these optimization calculation methods. The ability to solve a mine?s communication network provides a pre-installation mine network design map, creates coverage maps of the mine and allows planning for future communication activities

Aços inoxidáveis são ligas Fe-C-Cr com elevada resistência à corrosão. Estes podem receber diferentes elementos de liga, que alteram suas microestruturas e propriedades de acordo com o interesse da aplicação. Os mais comuns são os austeníticos, ferríticos, martensíticos e duplex. Os aços inoxidáveis austeníticos possuem excelente resistência à corrosão, elevada ductilidade, boa soldabilidade, conformabilidade e tenacidade. Os aços inoxidáveis ferríticos possuem boa resistência à corrosão, são bons para estampagem e possuem maior dureza e soldabilidade em relação aos austeníticos. Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AID) são aços com estrutura bifásica, formados pelas fases ferrita e austenita, em proporções de aproximadamente 50% de cada. Os AIDs apresentam associação de resistência mecânica com resistência à corrosão. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo realizar ensaios metalográficos e tração de um AID 399B, de um aço inoxidável ferrítico 441A e de um aço inoxidável austenítico 304N, para fins de comparação da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas. Com os resultados conclui-se que o AID possui maior resistência à dureza na escala HRB, o aço austenítico possui maior capacidade de alongamento, devido sua estrutura CFC. Já o limite de resistência e de escoamento são maiores no aço AID devido a sua maior proporção da fase ferrita (52%).

Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. Low-grade manganese ores with low Mn/Fe ratios can he enriched through selective carbon reduction of iron oxide to magnetite followed by magnetic separation o f the magnetite. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to assess the preferential isothermal reduction of pure M1702 and Fe2O3 using solid carbon. This was followed by reduction of a synthetic analogue of composition comparable to an actual low-grade ore (i.e., Sandur manganese ore, Sandur, India). The carbothermic reduction of the manganese ore converts the hematite and goethite minerals to magnetite (Fe3O4), with the magnetite then going into the magnetic, fraction. The resultant nonmagnetic ,fraction becomes depleted of iron with an enhanced manganese content. These results show that it is possible to reduce the iron from 22% to 5.85%, thus increasing the Mn/Fe ratio from 1.52 to 6.2 with a manganese recovery of about 50%. The recovery was, further improved by grinding the magnetic fraction to -75 µm.

Output of garnet and special silica stone products increased in both tonnage and value during the year, while emery and tripoli-type materials production decreased in both tonnage and value. Routine analyses of seismicity and event locations are essential for coal burst risk management, especially in the presence of unfavorable and complex geology. In an Australian longwall coal mine, a small-scale seismic monitoring network was installed to monitor a section of a major dyke intersected by the roadway, which was classified as a coal burst prone zone. The Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) technique was adopted for automatically discriminating seismic events to assess seismicity in this zone. The discriminated seismic events were located with the Shortest Path Method based on the Boundary Discretization Scheme (BDS-SPM) for temporal-spatial seismic event distribution analysis. The results demonstrate that the seismic events are discriminated with an average accuracy of 94%. Moreover, the seismic events are more accurately located using the BDS-SPM with a 3D heterogeneous velocity model compared with results obtained with a homogeneous velocity model. The temporal and spatial variances in seismic activities identify that the rock fractures in the dyke zone are closely related to the longwall mining process and a local dyke has a controlling influence on the stress concentration in its vicinity.

The National Mining Hall of Fame will hold its 13thAnnual Induction Banquet during MINExpo International 2000 in Las Vegas, NV. The gala black-tie (optional) event will honor eight legendary leaders of the mining industry. The event will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 8. The induction ceremonies will salute mining greats elected by the board of governors from a list of nominees submitted by mining industry partners and the public. The members of the Class of 2000 will join 151 other inductees enshrined in the Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville, CO. The evening will begin at 6 pm with a cash bar reception followed by the banquet and program at 7 pm. Keynoting the banquet program will be Harrison (Jack) Schmitt. He was the geologist/astronaut of the Apollo 17 mission to the moon in 1972 (see related story on page 26). And he is the only scientist to “kick rocks on the moon.” Schmitt is also a member of the Mining Hall’s board of governors. Schmitt was also the keynote speaker at the First Annual Induction Banquet in Denver, CO in 1988.

Because of drilling, completion, and workover practices, the permeability around a wellbore generally is different from the permeability of the formation. The zone with the altered permeability is called "skin" and its effect on the pressure or flow behavior of the well is called "skin effect". Hawkinsl has shown that the radius and the permeability of this zone are related to the skin by: If the permeability in the skin zone is less than that of the formation, the skin is positive; if it is more than that of the formation, the skin is negative. If the two permeabilities are equal, s is zero; that is, there is no skin. Van Everdingen2 and Hurst3 have given mathematical solutions to the case of a zone of reduced permeability around the wellbore. This skin effect is illustrated in Fig. 1. They treat the positive skin as a zone of reduced permeability of infinitesimal thickness around the wellbore. When applied to a well with negative skin, however, their solutions lead to the calculated flowing well pressure which is smaller than the formation pressure, i.e., an injection situation. This is a physical contradiction. In this paper, it is shown that this mathematical difficulty can be overcome by assuming an effective wellbore radius larger than the actual wellbore. Existing solutions2"4 are modified to include the effect of an enlarged wellbore radius, and thus enable the engineer to deal with negative as well as positive skins. Allis-Chalmers has combined a new heat transfer device, called the ROLLER GRATE, with a unique processing scheme, resulting in the ROLLER GRATE Oil Shale Processing System of Allis-Chalmers. In order to test both the process and the equipment, a batch Process Development Unit (PDU) ROLLER GRATE retort was designed and built. This unit vas designed with the flexibility to process shale over a wide range of test conditions in order to demonstrate the attributes of the oil-shale processing system. Instrumentation on the PDU and extensive sampling of the effluent streams permitted the PDU test data to be used in the design and scale-up of the process. Over 30 tests have been conducted with Colorado shale, and over 25 tests have been run with an Indiana shale. In addition, rests have been run with California and Utah tar sands.
