THE first press was installed in June, 1910, and the second in March,1911. They produce 1,000 briquettes per hour, weighing 5 kg. (11.05 1b.) each, under a pressure of about 400 kg. per square centimeter (5,689.2 lb. per square inch). The chloride of magnesium is received from the potash mines at Hanover in tank cars in approximately a 35 per cent. solution. The quantity of solution added to the flue dust varies between 2 and 3 per cent., so that the briquettes contain about 1 per cent of MgCl2. To fresh dust as much as 10 per cent. of coke breeze may be added and bri¬quettes made that still have a crushing strength of from 25 to 30 kg. (377 to 426.6 lb. per square inch) after 36 hr., and 45 kg. (639.9 lb. per square inch) after six days. After having treated 140,000 tons of the material, the reports of the blast furnaces show that the briquettes improved the action of a furnace and produced less dust than did Minette ore. As much as 35 per cent. of briquettes is added to the furnace charge without bad effects on operations. The presence of chlorine did not produce any corrosion in the furnace, downtakes or other piping. The presence of a certain amount of chlorine in the dust reduces the amount of chloride of magnesium which it is necessary to add for briquetting.

This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calcula¬tions where the compliance limit of lbs S02/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equa¬tions to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs S02/million Btu; the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess%o = 0.5 - 0.6-13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C<- 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out exploratory laboratoryscale studies to identify factors that may contribute to nitrogen oxides (NOx) production associated with non-ideal detonation of blasting agents. Explosive admixture with drill cuttings, loss of fuel oil in ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) from wicking, ammonium nitrate dissolution with water, degree of explosive confinement, ANFO density, and critical diameter were identified as contributing factors to increased NOx production under the laboratory test conditions. Experiments were also conducted to examine the effectiveness of various additives in reducing the NOx production from ANFO, emulsion, and ANFO/emulsion blends. Aluminum powder, coal dust, urea, and excess fuel oil in ANFO formulations were tested and were found to reduce both the nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) production. Fumes measurements were obtained in the NIOSH underground closed chamber from the detonation of 4.5-kg (10 lbs) charges in schedule 80 seamless steel pipe and from detonations in light weight galvanized steel stove pipe. Some exploratory tests were also conducted with 0.8-kg (1.8 lbs) charges of pulverized ANFO initiated with 0.08-kg (0.18 lbs), 50/50 (Pentolite) boosters (in the NIOSH 12-ft (3.7-m) diameter steel sphere) to measure the degree of fumes production associated with post-detonation oxidation. Ammonium nitrate, emulsion and Pentolite boosters were also detonated in an oxygen-poor environment.

For many years mine surveyors and exploration engineers have sought an accurate means of transferring meridian underground by using the gyro-compass. These efforts have generally failed, either because they were inaccurate or because the size and cost of the unit were prohibitive. During the past ten years, however, great strides have been made. Autonetics in California has developed a comparatively light-weight (100-lb) gyro-theodolite, and the Institute for Mine Surveying at Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany has developed an instrument that is accurate to within 20" to 30" of arc. Concurrently, Minneapolis-Honeywell has produced an astounding gyro, the size of a salt shaker, that weighs less than 0.5 lb and compares favorably in performance with the 50-lb gyros of conventional design. This unit, designed for missile guidance, should be adaptable for surveying small boreholes. Given the proper interest and approach from the engineering fraternity, excellent gyro- compasses could probably be available for accurate underground survey work at nominal cost within the next three years. Principles of the Gyro-Compass: The gyro- compass, used for 50 years as a navigational instrument in ships and aircraft, senses the turning axis of the earth and points out true polar north. It does this by employing the earth&apos;s rotation, the force of gravity, and the precession characteristics of a gyro. PLATINUM and palladium are the most generally useful, most ductile and least rare members of the platinum family. They have many impor-tant applications in the pure state but for other applications it is fre-quently desirable to harden them and otherwise modify their properties by alloying small amounts of the other platinum group metals with them. These alloys are frequently required to withstand very drastic forming operations and to possess certain mechanical properties to fulfill specific requirements. For these reasons a knowledge of the tensile properties and annealing characteristics of pure platinum and palladium as well as their more useful commercial alloys is important to the user, and the fabricator. The present work was undertaken to fill this need. Rather brief (5 min.) annealing treatments were employed to render the data of maximum practical value and all tests were conducted upon 0.050-in. dia. wire, initially reduced 50 per cent in area by cold drawing, for the same reason. CONCLUSIONS 1. Pure (thermocouple grade) platinum reduced 50 per cent by cold drawing exhibits the following tensile properties: ultimate tensile strength, 36,000 lb. per sq. in.; proportional limit, 27,000 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, 2.5 per cent in 2 in.; reduction in area, 95 per cent. When fully annealed by treatment at 1100°C. its properties are: ultimate tensile strength, 20,700 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, 30 per cent in 2 in.; reduction in area, 93 per cent.

Aços assistido pelo efeito TRIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity) com alto teor de Al estão sendo desenvolvidos com grande potencial de se tornarem aços de terceira geração para aplicações no setor automotivo. Assim, por ainda estarem na fase de desenvolvimento, estudos sobre esses materiais são de extrema relevância. Este trabalho buscou correlacionar a influência da laminação a frio e recozimento intercrítico, em uma liga de aço TRIP com elevado teor de Al, com o comportamento da liga face as análises de transformações de fase via Calorimetria Diferencial de Varredura (DSC), identificação de fases e textura da matriz ferrítica via Difração de Raios X (DRX) e aspecto microestrutural via Microscopia Óptica (MO). O processamento termomecânico adotado, com distintas temperaturas de encharque no recozimento intercrítico, não influenciaram a textura cristalográfica da liga, entretanto, distintos percentuais de austenita retida foram verificados para cada condição, sendo o maior valor observado para a temperatura de 820 ºC.

The object of this paper is to show the relations of the East Coulee coal area to the near-by Willow Creek, Wayne, Rosedale, and Drumheller areas, all being parts of the Drumheller field. The word ?area? is here used in a more local sense than that employed by Dr. J. A. Allan, whose. &apos;area&apos; is rather comparable with the &apos;mining division&apos; in British Columbia. I have drawn freely from the published information, particularly from Dr. Allan&apos;s report on the "Geology of Drumheller Coat Field, Alberta", and from Dr. E. Stansfield&apos;s paper on " A Chemical Survey of Alberta Coals", to whom thanks are due. The Drumheller field is served by branch lines of the two principal Canadian railways. The C.N.R. traverses the district by its Goose Lake line from Calgary to Saskatoon; and the C.P.R. by a line from Calgary to Acme and then southeasterly to Drumheller, where it effects a junction with the C.N.R., over which the C.P.R. has running rights as far as Rosedale. From Rosedale, a joint line built during the summer of 1928 extends about forty miles down the Red Deer river to the mouth of Bull Pond creek. From that point the C.P .R. turns more southerly to connect with the Bassano-Empress line. The C.N.R., it is expected, will eventually proceed eastward to connect with a transcontinental line. The joint line from Rosedale down the Red Deer river opened up the Willow Creek and East Coulee areas.

EXCEPTING the joint sessions on gases in metals held during the day on Tuesday, the Institute of .Metals opened its activities with a division dinner at the Commodore on Tuesday evening, with Sam Tour, retiring chairman, presiding. W. M. Corse, secretary-treasurer, outlined the financial status of the division and stated the investment fund is becoming large enough so that in the near future it will be possible to pay all expenses of a foreign lecturer once in two years and not rely on an extended speaking tour to cover expenses. W. B. Price reported on his attendance at the Zurich, Switzerland, meeting of the International Society of Testing Materials and gave a graphic account of his visit to the Grand Salon, his meeting with Mussolini, and his audience with the Pope. Buffalo was announced as the place of the fall meeting, to be held during the week of Oct. 3.

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

"A magnetic proximity detection system is mounted on a mobile mining machine to prevent underground workers from being pinned or struck by machine motion. The system generates magnetic fields around the machine to determine safe working distances. The minerworn component measures the magnetic field in order to approximate location. Large masses of steel, such as those from mining equipment, can alter the magnetic field distribution. This affects the locational accuracy of the system, thus adversely impacting worker safety. To examine this problem, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a method and test system to study the influence of a steel mass on the magnetic field distribution. The results show that a steel plate can strengthen the magnetic field perpendicular to the generator by up to 40 percent. Furthermore, they show that the degree of the influence on the field distribution is a function of distance. The results from this study can be used to further develop and improve the performance and reliability of electromagnetic proximity detection systems used in underground mining applications.IntroductionOn average, 250 miners are injured every year, and 43 miners were reported to be killed by striking or pinning accidents involving continuous mining machines in the United States between 1984 and 2015, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015). Continuous mining machines are large mobile machines used to mechanically cut coal in underground mines. These machines weigh approximately 60 t (132,000 lb) each. Although modern continuous mining machines can be remotely controlled, operators still need to be close to the machine primarily because of the low visibility and wide blind spots of the underground working environment.The MSHA promulgated a final regulation in 2015 that requires the use of proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except fullface machines. MSHA has approved five such systems to be intrinsically safe for use in underground coal mines: (1) Strata Worldwide’s HazardAvert System, (2) Frederick Mining’s Model 200 HazardAvert Detection System, (3) Nautilus International’s Coal-Buddy System, (4) Matrix Design Group’s M3- 1000/Joy Global SmartZone Gen 1 and (5) Matrix Design Group’s IntelliZone/ Joy Global SmartZone Gen 2."

The paper point out the economics importance of the Torco process as lubricant and fuels of the motor in the mining. It is possible to envisage an arrangement in which TORCO would be used to treat a sulphide ore, the acid used to dissolve the metallic ccoper in the concentrate and the copper produced in cathode form by electrowinning. However, there are studies point out that it would be as profitable as conventional flotation, smelting and refining. To carry out full testing of the TORCO process on anyore would be expensive, involving sending several hundred tons to one of the pilot plants located in Johann esburg or Milan. Such pilot plant testing should & be considered as confirmatory rather than exploratory, and a good economic case for using theTORCO process would have to be made out based of mallet scale testing before in curring the larger expense.

Esses indicadores serão capazes de destacar os ativos prioritários e informar para as áreas os instrumentos que necessitam de intervenções, evitando parada de ativos críticos em corretivas. O conceito de ativo crítico para o projeto é de um instrumento cuja falha paralisa a produção.

Blast vibration induced by mining activities, such as stope production blasts, could lead to the initiation of seismic events that inflict damage to mine openings. In this paper, the effect of stope production blasts on nearby fault is examined. First, validation of blast vibration attenuation is performed with a numerical model representing a single blast hole through comparison with that calculated from charge-weight scaling law derived from in-situ data. Subsequently, a mine-wide scale model with a fault parallel to a steeply dipping, tabular ore deposit that is mined out with sublevel stoping method is generated, and the stopes are extracted and backfilled with static analysis to simulate burst-prone conditions on the fault. Based on the stress states, dynamic analysis is performed, in which blast vibration is applied to grid points on a stope wall on the hanging wall side. This assumes 9 blast holes located close to the wall, and blast-induced particle velocities that consider the positional relationships between the assumed blast holes and the stope wall are applied. During the dynamic analysis, blast sequence is considered, and stress states and shear displacement on the faults are examined. It is found from results that, after a rise in normal stress on the fault due to compressive waves induced by the blasts, the normal stress decreases because of the reflection of the compressive waves on the fault. The reduction in the normal stress due to the reflected waves is found to be large enough to cause the fault to slip. The results also show that the level of normal stress eventually keeps decreasing with time as the blast sequence proceeds and that an increase in shear displacement on the fault is accompanied by a decrease in normal stress. This study clarifies the mechanism by which blast vibration causes the fault to slip. In addition, the simulation technique to apply blast vibration that takes into account blast sequence and the locations of blast holes to a stope wall is developed.

As impurezas associadas ao minério de ferro em determinadas porções das minas são elevadas, principalmente os teores de manganês. Assim, vislumbrando o entendimento do comportamento dos minerais portadores de manganês no processo de tratamento via separação magnética, foram coletadas amostras diárias que alimentam o concentrador magnético e que representam o mix das minas do Complexo minerador, nas etapas de alimentação, concentrado e rejeito, por um período de oito meses. Nessas amostras, foram determinadas as granulometrias, análises químicas por faixas e mineralogias. Em uma segunda etapa de trabalho, foram coletadas duas amostras da mina 1 e duas amostras da mina 2, representativas dos materiais impuros, para identificação das fases minerais majoritárias através de difratometria de raios X, pesquisa microestrutural e microanálise química dos portadores de manganês através de análises em MEV-EDS. Os resultados mostraram que o manganês possui duas formas de ocorrência: uma como mineral liberado e a outra como minerais componentes de partículas mistas. Nesta última forma de ocorrência, pode-se obter maior concentração do teor de manganês no produto da separação magnética e/ou perda do elemento ferro para o rejeito, pois as partículas mistas (hematita + manganês) não são atraídas pelo campo magnético.

THE notched-bar impact test has proved worth while in certain applications as a test for control of the quality or the heat- . treatment of steel. In view of the serious thought that even so simple a test as the tensile test, has evoked during the past years, it is not surprising that the notched- bar impact test should have inspired much experimental work. The correlation of the great number of data has not been successful, although steady progress has been made toward a better understanding of this test. Progress has been made, especially, in the isolation of the effects of the many variables that control the results. The stress system imposed on a specimen with a notch is so complicated and un- predictable that no simple evaluation of the test has been possible. Because of this uncertainty, many engineers hesitate to use the notched-bar impact test, and this attitude may well continue until a better understanding of the effects of the variables in the test are available. Without doubt, any additional data that may be presented should be accompanied by as complete a description of the details of test as possible, so that it may be added to the general fund of information that is to serve as the basis for the theory of the notched-bar impact test. The many factors that may control the test results have been pointed out repeatedly. The importance of the effect of the type and dimensions of the specimen has been recognized. Most of the work reported by American investigators has been limited to small- size (Charpy) specimens tested as a simple beam; two types of notches (Fig. I) have been commonly used. Considerable data have also been presented by many investigators using a small specimen tested as a cantilever beam; this commonly being called the Izod test. Here, however, a shear component of stress makes the stress system even mare complex than that present in the simple beam type of test, hence a critical analysis is difficult. Much work has also been reported by investigators using the tension type of specimen. A second variable that must be con- trolled is the testing temperature. An indication that the tests were performed at room temperature is not sufficient, since in many steels a variation of a few degrees in the actual testing temperature may be sufficient to give an entirely different range of results. Other factors. such as the com- position and condition of the material being tested and the speed of test, should also be considered. "Roughness at varying scales is an important component of the shear strength of discontinuities. Small scale roughness can be assessed in drillcore and through laboratory testing of drillcore derived samples. Large scale roughness, or waviness, also plays an important part in peak shear strength and a number of methods for its incorporation into defect plane strength models are presented.A number of methods for capturing waviness data from exposed faces are reviewed. A method is presented for deriving waviness from downhole televiewer data, which is shown to be significantly more accurate than structural data derived from core logging. The method is based on work undertaken in the highly anisotropic bedded units of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia where televiewer surveys are routinely undertaken. Values of waviness are derived through a review of variation in dip resolved in the direction of the slope face. This method allows design engineers to incorporate large scale roughness in defect plane shear strengths at the design stage.INTRODUCTIONThere are a number of constitutive models currently being applied by rock mechanics practitioners in calculating defect plane shear strength parameters, such as Patton, Barton – Bandis and Hencher [1, 2, 3]. Most of these shear strength determinations are typically undertaken by determining the base or residual friction angle, and applying corrections for small and large scale surface roughness."
