"Seismic waves from explosions can be used to characterize physical processes in and around the source. The quantification of absolute levels of ground motion is important for minimizing impact on nearby people and structures. We contrast work in characterizing seismic radiation from contained nuclear explosions with ground motions from multiple explosion quarry blasts. A physical basedunderstanding of the explosion source function allows prediction and extrapolation to new environments where experimental data may not exist."

Stream sediment geochemical analyses from 140 mining company exploration surveys of the Coromandel, Northwest Nelson, Marlborough and Westland regions of New Zealand have been compiled from open file reports and entered on a database called REGCHEM (for Regional Exploration GeoCHEMistry). REGCHEM is supported by GEOEXPL, a custom-written computer software application which operates under the Microsoft Access relational database management system on a PC-type computer, The data are plotted as maps using the MapInfo geographic information system (GIS) package. Thresholds separating anomalous values from background values are determined using the PROBPLOT uni-variant statistical package, which enables the discrimination and modelling of several populations. Relevant REGCHEM data are being incorporated into a GIS for the Coromandel region as part of ongoing studies to develop mineral deposit and metallogenic models for the region, and to assess regional prospectivity.

Geology, and the detailed understanding of its properties, are fundamental to the optimal design and successful operation of any mine. To that end extensive fieldwork has been conducted at Anglo Platinum?s PPRust operation to collect geotechnical information both from exploration boreholes and in-pit mining faces. Since 1998, geotechnical data has been collected from over 337 km of exploration core, 7 km of exposed mining faces and more than 15 600 field and laboratory tests, in order to define the complete set of geotechnical properties for each rock type in the mining area. The geotechnical information collected is stored in two databases, SABLE Warehouse and MineMapper3D before it is imported into the Datamine mining software package. The geotechnical parameters, mining rock mass rating system (MRMR), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), fracture frequency per metre (FF) and rock quality designation (RQD), are modelled using geostatistics to generate a 3D geotechnical block model. Data is interpolated between exploration boreholes and exposed mining faces and modelling is constrained, using wireframes, by rock type and structural features. By having detailed geotechnical information available in a 3D model that can be readily accessed and interpreted, significant production optimisations, feasibility studies and planning initiatives can be implemented. From a slope design perspective the model is used to target data deficient zones and highlight potentially weak rock mass areas. As this can be viewed in 3D, the open pit slopes can then be designed to accommodate the poor quality area before it is excavated. It also follows that geotechnical zones can be readily identified and the slopes optimised accordingly. Rather than viewing the drill and blast department as an isolated cost centre and focussing on minimising drill and blast costs, the fragmentation requirements of the comminution and load and haul business areas are studied. It is well understood that chemical energy is the cheapest form of comminution and that major downstream benefits can be derived by increasing drill and blast expenditure. 238 blasts were assessed to determine the optimum fragmentation requirements for ore and waste. Based on the study a mean fragmentation target of 150 mm was set for delivery to the crushing circuit and a mean fragmentation of 230 mm was set for waste loading from the pit. Substantial benefits have been realised in the drill and blast department by developing empirical correlations that relate the MRMR values in the geotechnical model to a blastability index, fragmentation, required powder factor and costs. "Soft technology" computers and computer programs-brings to mind a room full of machines, tape drives, disks, plotters, and printers spitting out financial reports. Computers now have a much broader scope of applications because of reductions in equipment size and cost. For example, people now interact directly with computers to control events. Such computers and associated equipment-called interactive control systems-are often small, relatively inexpensive, and can be designed to increase productivity at mining operations. This is accomplished by improving communications between individuals; giving employees the information needed to make decisions in real time, as events are happening; and giving individuals the background needed to perform more effectively. This paper will describe a procedure for determining the return on investment for interactive control systems, and describe four such systems. The analysis process is general in nature and can be applied to any type of mining operation or production process.

Explosives are widely used in the Oil & Gas Industry for subsurface mapping via measurement of reflected sound waves as each charge is detonated. To complete a seismic survey, several thousand explosive charges may be deployed into narrow boreholes, often in areas difficult to access or where socio-political factors may increase the risk of unlawful recovery or sabotage of the explosives. Therefore, when misfires occur, the explosives left in the ground often cannot be retrieved or sympathetically detonated safely, in which case they are “abandoned” (in-line with local regulations) potentially posing a safety and security risk.

Direct reduced iron (DRI), produced by the reaction between iron ore and reducing gasses, is used as a source of low-residual iron, in addition to ferrous scrap and pig iron, in the production of steel mainly through the electric arc furnace (EAF) route of steelmaking. The main DRI technologies in use are those of Midrex and Hyl, but in recent years a myriad of newer processes emerged based on variations in feedstock, reducing agent and fuel sources. Since the beginning of the nineties, DRI has increasingly emerged as a cheaper, low-residual iron feedstock for EAFs, which have traditionally relied almost entirely on ferrous scrap feed. The main stimulus behind the interest in DRI has been the increasing popularity of the EAF and the ?mini-mill? set-up as the favoured steelmaking option compared to the traditional and much less flexible blast furnace/ basic oxygen converter. This, however, has been creating a problem with regard to availability of low-residual scrap, resulting in upward pressure on high quality scrap prices and leaving DRI, traditionally the ?expensive alternative?, as a much more competitive consideration. The second main determinant has been the increasing production efficiency of existing steel plants which, in the light of improvements such as continuous casting and near net shape casting, has been constraining the supply of low-residual domestic scrap, traditionally the prime source of EAF feed. The explosion of current and proposed DRI projects has been accentuating the mounting interest of global role-players in assuring the availability of reliable sources of low-residual iron units for the future, especially in cases where definitive competitive advantages exist with regard to proximity to primary sources of iron ore and fuel (gas or coal).

"The results and methodology for the optimisation of the zinc flotation circuit at the Matagami Mill using the 6-Sigma methodology are shown in detail while only the base line and final results are presented for the copper circuit. As a result of the six sigma project, the zinc concentrate grade was improved by 2% and the zinc recovery by 3%, with reduced dosage of reagents while the copper concentrate was improved by 2.4%. The process variation in the zinc concentrate grade and recovery was also reduced by over 50%. The main factors contributing to the project success were identified to be improvement in the plant measurement systems, an internal benchmarking exercise and statistically designed laboratory and in plant tests to guide the process improvement. The annual value to Noranda resulting from this project has been estimated at approximately $5 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Matagami concentrator started ore processing from the new Bell- Allard deposit in July 1999. Concentrator performance (grade and recovery of zinc and copper concentrates) was highly variable and work was ongoing to fix the sources of variation. In the mean time, Noranda embarked on its 6-Sigma initiative across the company. The 6-Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) methodology was used in the two flotation circuits to reduce variation and improve performance. The statistical 6-Sigma methodology moves towards identifying and controlling critical process operating variables (the X' s) to achieve customerspecified performance (the Y's). The goal of the methodology is to describe a process in a numerical equation known as the transfer function, given as Y = f (XI, X2, X3.. .), where Y could be concentrate grade or recovery and examples of X's are reagent dosage, particle size, etc. With the transfer function, optimal operating conditions and control tolerances are established for the key X's to ensure the desired Y performance is obtained.Each phase of the 6-Sigma methodology is explained below with examples from the Matagami project."

The paper proposes three methods to determine optimum lifetime of a mining project1. The conclusion is that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate (by coincidence). It is also stated that: "The stochastic and option pricing models, in addition to providing a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV (net present value) calculation, showed that the example project has the potential for substantially higher return. By explicitly considering a project's potential risks, the stochastic or option pricing techniques can more accurately describe its probable investment performance." This discussion is intended to demonstrate that: • It is no coincidence that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate. • The stochastic and option pricing models do not provide a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV calculation. • The potential for a substantially higher return is misrepresented. First, a review of investment decision theory in mining is needed. Net present value is the preferred performance measure because of the flexibility offered when comparing various alternatives. However, it presents the following disadvantages: • The discount rate selection is not straightforward. • The NPV obtained represents a deterministic characterization of the variables included in the cash flow calculations, i.e. a single-point estimate.

The Brunswick plant is located in Costerfield, approximately 40km east of Bendigo in central Victoria. Crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration and flotation methods are used to produce a saleable gold concentrate and an antimony-gold flotation concentrate. This paper discusses the improvements made within the processing plant which have resulted in a 99% increase in throughput over nameplate capacity of 6 250 average tonnes per month to 12 445 average tonnes per month and increases of 12% gold (from 2007 average of 78% to 2014 average of 90%) and 16% antimony recovery (from 2007 average of 79% to 2015 average of 95%). When roasting started at Giant Yellowknife Mines in 1949, it became apparent that, to prevent air and water pollution in the surrounding district, it would be necessary to collect the arsenic that was contained in the exit gases of the roaster. The arsenic collection problem was finally solved by the installation of both electrostatic and baghouse collectors. It was realized that a considerable quantity of gold-bearing dust was leaving the roaster with the exit gases. When the collection problem was solved, it was possible to measure this loss. The loss proved to be considerable and it became evident that a substantial quantity of gold could be recovered. Research programs on dust treatment began in 1958, and by May, 1960, the treatment process which is currently being followed was started in the plant. At present, the two electrostatic preci11itators, Operated at temperatures above 600°F, collect the gold-bearing dust.

Most mining operations, including iron ore, maintain a focus on continuous improvement and asset optimisation in their operations. As all the unit operations in the Mine-to-Mill value chain are interdependent, available technologies that address efficiencies across the value chain are once again in the spotlight as companies are driven to improve productivity and maximise mine site profits to increase return on capital invested. Core to continuous improvement is the need to understand the baseline and impact of changes to the process. In this paper, we discuss some of the critical attributes in the Mine-to-Mill process, including their influence on productivity and cost, the need for direct measurement and areas where they should be applied. Many initiatives can be considered to improve Mine-to-Mill processes. Mining operations are planned and executed based on designs and models to achieve the operation's objectives. However, there are many variables in the different parts of the value chain, such as blasting, material handling, crushing and screening. Therefore, measurement of the key attributes establishes the baseline for Mine-to-Mill (or Pit to Plant) performance, which is necessary to understand the impact of any proposed improvements to the process design and execution and monitor the outcomes on an ongoing basis sustain the improvements that have been implemented. This paper focuses on two types of measurement – blast movement and particle size of materials through the Mine-to-Mill process. Several innovative technologies and control loops are readily available to measure these attributes and assist operations to improve productivity and mine site profits. The size of the tangible benefits, which can flow from measuring and optimising fragmentation and blast movement, provide a remarkable return on the investment. Realising these benefits needs a focus outside conventional operation silos as a successful Mine-to-Mill project requires a multidiscipline approach across all the silos in the value chain. Required technologies are available; adding the necessary ingredients of communication and co-operation by all concerned across the silos will ensure the benefits are realised.

Riveting operations in aircraft manufacturing involves the use of power tools for manually drilling holes for the rivets, power drills for the setting of the holes for the rivets, as well as rivet guns to drive and set the rivets. To close the rivet, the rivet is driven against a metallic bar commonly called a “bucking bar”. The bucking bars are typically held firmly to increase the quality of the riveting, as well as keep the bucking bar from “dancing” against the metal piece being riveted. Thus, employees in aircraft manufacturing involved in riveting are exposed to hand-arm vibration from several sources, and epidemiological evidence suggests that vibration-related musculoskeletal disorders are associated with long term exposure to riveting tasks in the aircraft manufacturing of aircraft.1,2 Recently, tungsten technology has been introduced into aircraft manufacturing for bucking bars, which are heavier than traditional steel bucking bars of the same size. Rivet guns with tungsten pistons instead of steel pistons have also recently been introduced with the objective of reducing vibration exposure to the riveter. The objective of this study was to assess vibration characteristics of steel and tungsten bucking bars and rivet guns to identify the combination that simultaneously reduced the combined exposure to both the “riveter” and “bucker”. Methods Vibration (10g tri-axial accelerometer, Biometrics S2-10G-MF Series 2) was measured from eight experienced employees using seven different rivet guns on size 6 rivets, with the same person bucking for all subjects. Vibration was also measured on two different bucking bars for these same eight subjects, with the same person driving the rivets using the various rivet guns. The rivet guns consisted of three E4 steel piston guns with different RPMs (Guns A-E4, B-E4, C-E4), an E4 vibration dampened rivet gun (Gun D-E4D), an E3 steel piston rivet gun (Gun E-E3) and an E3 and E4 tungsten piston rivet guns (Guns F-E3T and G-E4T). The bucking bars were made of 90% tungsten (1694g) and cold-rolled steel (843g), and were the same shape and size. A two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was performed on the vibration (mean frequency weighted resultant acceleration) on both the rivet gun side and the bucking bar side, and mean rankings were used to assess the vibration simultaneously for the rivet gun and bucking bars to investigate which combinations provided the lowest vibration exposure. Results Frequency weighted resultant acceleration was significantly lower on the E3 tungsten (F-E3T) rivet gun than the E4 steel piston (B-E4) and the E4 tungsten piston (G-E4T) rivet guns (Figure 1). When measuring vibration on the bucking bar, the E4 (A-E4) steel piston rivet gun resulted in lower vibration on the bucking bars than the E4 tungsten piston (G-E4T) and E4 vibration dampened (D-E4D) rivet guns (Figure 2). Additionally, use of tungsten bucking bars resulted in a 35% decrease in resultant frequency weighted acceleration than when using steel bucking bars.

I have spent most of the past 35 years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited ofAustralia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining investment.

This paper discusses the traditional costing approach currently used in the underground coal mining industry. Activity Based Costing (ABC) is identified as being a potentially more effective manner in which to cost underground coal mining systems. With the use of a costing framework developed by the author incorporating new thinking to eliminate the shortcomings identified in the traditional costing approach, a comparison of two types of underground coal mining systems, viz. continuous miner and longwall, is conducted. It is found that under certain criteria, in all cases, irrespective of the way in which the systems are costed, the continuous miner system is currently the better investment. It is also observed that when a system is costed using ABC that better investment decisions result when compared to costing the same system using traditional costing techniques. It is further seen that traditional costing techniques tend to overestimate the total costs of a mining system. This paper shows one application of ABC that can be incorporated as a management tool.

Platinum group metals are extracted almost exclusively in South Africa from three very different zones in the Bushveld Igneous Complex, called the Plat, Merensky, and the UG-2 reefs. The Plat reef is currently being exploited only by Anglo American Platinum, whereas the Merensky reef is exploited by them, Impala Platinum, Northam, and Lonplats. The UG-2 reef, on the other hand, is also processed by these producers, but Kroondal and Barplats have operations that exclusively treat ore from this reef. At present the extraction of pgms from ores in South Africa follows the traditional route of upgrading to a concentrate in a minerals processing circuit, further upgrading to a matte in a smelter, and final upgrading and separation of the individual metals in a refinery. Thus all operations that extract pgms require a minerals processing circuit, the design and performance of which is a topic of much interest, as it is a poorly understood and not a very efficient process in relative terms, compared to the other processes. Recoveries across the minerals processing circuit of between 75 and 90% are the norm.

The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column was installed as a final cleaner at the Northam Platinum Ltd. UG 2 concentrator in South Africa. It further discusses the improvements achieved after the conversion of a conventional flotation column, utilized as cleaner in the Merensky concentrator, to an external sparger flotation column. Finally, the application of the above knowledge in the design and commissioning of an external sparger flotation column as final cleaner in the furnace slag concentrator, is also discussed. 1. FINAL CLEANER AT THE UG 2 CONCENTRATOR The MF2 designed UG 2 concentrator is processing 75 000 tonnes run of mine ore at a head grade of 4.0 g/t 3PGM+Au and a feed Cr2O3 concentration of 28 %. Since commissioning of the plant in 2001, Cr2O3 in final concentrate amounted to approximately 5 % of the total mass. Although final concentrate produced from the UG 2 concentrator is blended with final concentrate obtained from the Merensky concentrator before smelting, blended Cr2O3 values in excess of 1.6% lead to difficulties in the subsequent smelting process. Several options for reducing the amount of Cr2O3 in final concentrate have been evaluated namely:- ? Differing types of depressants at various dosing rates. This test work did not reduce the amount of Cr2O3 reporting to final concentrate by any significant extent. ? Reduction in mass pull to minimize the entrainment of Cr2O3 in the concentrate stream.. This process change had a detrimental effect on PGM recovery. Conclusions were drawn that conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells could not achieve the required selectivity without sacrificing PGM recovery. As a consequence an alternative mechanism needed to be incorporated for the final cleaning of PGM concentrate.
