"Stirred mill technology dates back to 1928 where the idea to use “an agitator and spherical grinding media” was presented. The year 1948 saw the successful application of DuPont’s “sand mill” for pigment grinding. Subsequent years have led to the development of different types of stirred mills spanning a number of industries that require fine and ultrafine grinding. In the context of the mining industry, smaller grain size and other mineralogical characteristics have motivated the need to grind finer. In order to address this need, the interest in stirred milling technologies has grown over the last 20 years as can be illustrated by the large body of literature published over this same period of time. The typical observation reported in the literature is that in certain circumstances stirred milling is significantly more efficient than ball milling. Despite these developments, the tumbling mills are continuing to be used in fine and ultrafine grinding applications. The main reason for this, as communicated at the Canadian Mineral Processors roundtable discussion in 2013, is that the comfort level in understanding stirred milling technologies is not at the level of that of tumbling mills. The aim of this paper is to contribute to increasing the general comfort level with stirred milling technologies by developing a better understanding of how power and energy is affected by stirred mill impellor design and mill operation. This will be accomplished by first completing an overview of the power models found in the literature followed by a general description of DEM and CFD stirred mill models as well as the insights that can be drawn from them. Finally, a generic stirred mill power model will be presented and applied to different stirred mill types in order to develop some insights into the differences between different mill types. The paper will close with a discussion on some of the challenges that these models have and how future research might contribute to overcoming them."

"The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail (LRT) Project is part of an $8.4 billion investment to expand transit in the Toronto, Canada area and is the largest transit project initiated in Province’s history. Settlement control and impact to over 1400 adjacent structures due to tunnelling was identified early as a critical project risk. The ground conditions along the 10km tunnel alignment consist of water bearing soft ground deposits (clays, sands, silts) which required careful analysis and control during design and construction. This paper will describe the process used to analyze settlements along the numerous of adjacent structures and evaluate achieved settlement results to those used during design. The paper will demonstrate that with the appropriate design specifications, selection of modernized EPB machines, and contractor performance, settlement can be maintained well below typical industry (volume loss) standards, expanding the application and suitability of soft ground tunnelling in sensitive settlement areas. INTRODUCTION The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project is part of an $8.4 billion (2010$ CND) investment from the Ontario provincial government to expand transit in the Toronto, Canada area. The project is being developed by Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario to provide 19 kilometers of dedicated LRT service connecting the City of Toronto from the west to east along Eglinton Avenue. Upon completion in the year 2020, the Crosstown will be the first LRT constructed in Toronto. It will link regional and local transit, cut travel time along the route by half and provide over a thousand jobs during construction."

Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with so many "inflection points" and "counterflexures" that they obscure the issue. Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration. Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.

The 1969 Lignite Symposium was held at Grand Forks, N. Dak., on May 1-2, 1969. Cosponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, the meeting was the fifth in this series. Registrants from many States and Canadian Provinces attended the meeting representing many segments of energy-oriented companies, State and Federal Government, and universities. At 2-year intervals, these symposia provide a common meeting place where recent research and developments in technology and utilization of energy resources with emphasis on solid fuels (lignite) are presented. Proceedings3 of the previous symposia including a Forum held in 1958 have been published.4

Petroleum oils of widely different grades have long been clarified or decolorized by contact with fuller's earths. More recently, so-called activated clays have also been used for this purpose. Still more recently ouch clays have been used in the form of nodules termed "catalytic pellets." Clays of varied appearance and from different localities possess the desired bleaching qualities, but evaluation of such clays, so useful to the oil industry, has not been simple. Previous methods of identification and evaluation have largely followed procedures of production methods and were not primarily based upon the fundamental properties of the clays. Thus) a false assumption has grown up that) bleaching clays probably have no common properties on which a-method of comparison can be based. Fuller's earths and activated clays have a large absorptive capacity for the color constituents of petroleum and its products decolorizing is accomplished by bringing the oil into intimate contact with the clay and later separating the decolorized oil from the clay with its load of absorbed coloring matter. Former practice in absorbing "color" was to use the clay as granules or In' powdered form. More recent practice is to use clay pellets that are more abrasion-resistant than the granules. The oil is either filtered through a bed of clay, percolation method, or agitated on contact with the clay, contact method. Viscous oils are decolorized at an elevated temperature, so that their viscosity is lowered to the point at which thorough contact with the clay is insured. Nonhumidifying, nonoxidizing gas, such as dry steam or dry nitrogen, is used to seal such hot oil masses from the atmosphere.

The High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is gaining acceptance in the mineral processing industry and has become a competitive technology in reducing the specific energy consumption in Mineral processing plants. The amount of samples required for HPGR amenability testwork and HPGR wear tests is usually high and often cannot be available at early stage of projects were only a few drill cores are available. Although HPGR was initiated from small scale piston die compression tests, the development of small scale piston die test to predict the performance of HPGR has been slow. The objectives of this paper was to present the designs, operating procedure of piston-die press and operating conditions which have resulted in similar particle size distribution obtained from a piston die test and HPGR Labwal unit starting from the same feed size distribution. Testwork were conducted using a 2 MN piston-die press and a Labwal HPGR unit on major South African ore types, viz, gold, platinum and iron ores. The results obtained show that piston-die test can generate data to predict energy consumption, product size distribution, and even to evaluate the edge effect.

The City of Akron will construct the Northside Interceptor Tunnel project, a U.S. EPA/ DOJ CSO Long Term Control Plan Project. The system will provide at least 10.3 million gallons of storage in a 16.5-foot finished ID and 6,660-foot-long rock tunnel. The system will reduce both overflow volume and number of overflow structures on the Cuyahoga River. The project includes deep drop shafts and more than 3,000 linear feet of 48 to 96-inch I.D. sewers installed by trenchless construction methods. This paper will discuss the project background, ground conditions, and other challenges overcome during the design phases.

The author, who himself has worked inn the field with various types of torsion balances, expresses in the article his experience with the recently marketed Haff-Torsion-Balance. The advantages of practical work with Haff?s s torsion balance as compared with other types are mentioned. In spite of low weight and corresponding small dimensions (Model M = 23.5 kg., Model Al = 11.5 kg.) the sensitiveness is not less than that in the largest instruments. It is at 1.10-9, which is proved by calculations. A comparison with the corresponding values of other types of torsion balances (Eötvös, Askania, Gepege) is given. The mechanical features of the instrument are briefly described, and the balance is illustrated by a, cross section of it. -- W. Ayvazoglou. "Health hazards in the mining industry may be attributed to (1) abnormal conditions of the air, (2) improper sewage disposal, (3) bad drinking water, (4) bad illumination, and (5) local mechanical irritation.Abnormal conditions of the air may be due either to physical or chemical changes. The physical changes are (1) abnormal temperature, (2) abnormal humidity, (3) air movement, and (4) presence of dusts. Dusts may be either poisonous, as salts of lead, arsenic, zinc, or mercury; or nonpoisonous, as dust from coal, silica or quartz, limestone, gypsum, or silicates. Chemical changes may be due to changes in the normal constituents, as lowered oxygen or increased carbon dioxide; or to the addition of abnormal constituents, as carbon monoxide (white damp), hydrogen sulphide (stink damp), sulphur dioxide, methane (marsh gas, fire damp), hydrogen, and nitrogen.Effects of High Temperatures and Humidities The effects of various temperatures and relative humidities have been studied in mines in many countries. Harrington and myself studied them in the metal mines of this country and, in a report written recently, they have been summarized as follows:A. Remaining at rest in saturated air at 91 1/2° F, for one hour, With no air movement caused -1. An increase in body temperature;2. A moderate increase in pulse rate;3. Profuse sweating;4. The use of explosives in mining operations is a process that involves the search for an ideal explosive for the type of geological condition of the mineral to be extracted. For the explosives present on the market the majority are based on Ammonium Nitrate. This as it is an ideal balance of high energy efficiency achieved with low development of gas emission. The manufacturing and loading operation of the explosive requires multiple process stages and different raw materials, which, if is not correctly supervised and controlled may cause the development of harmful gases or, in the worst case, even toxic gases. The majority of mining operations are located at remote locations without the presence of communities, and hence individuals, which could be affected by emission of the harmful or even toxic gases. In these operations the protection is mainly to protect the employees of the operation. However, if the operation is located near communities, the effect of these gases becomes a serious problem. The communities' perception of post-blasting gases, according to interviews carried out in this project, describes these as smells of black gunpowder, damp soil with a volatile permanence and medium intensity, sometimes a stinking tone is added. The legislation in Chile that controls the exposure of “workers” to different gases is Supreme Decree 594, 2019 (Decreto Supremo 594). Currently the Chilean Ministry of Environment and Sernageomin (Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería) are taking actions to reform and strengthen oversight, seeking through a short law to provide more tools to the government to decentralize decisions in case of non-compliance with the decree. This paper describes the development and implementation of a permanent and remote gas monitoring system, considering the reasons for choosing the gases to be included in the equipment, the types of sensors and their capabilities, the way to verify in the field the correct functioning of the technology throughout the project, and finally how the data collected in the field is meeting the government's expectations in terms of permanent and online reportability. Additionally, it addresses the continuity of gas monitoring in the community that will disappear in the short term due to the expansion of mining operations, thereby ensuring the protection of both workers and affected communities.

Views and conceptions of the origin, composition, and general nature of coal differ so widely that to determine the real extent of actual knowledge is no easy matter. The chemist finds difficulty in attacking the chemical problems and the engineer lacks a broad chemical basis for the study of his problems. Thus the economical and efficient utilization of coal in the industries suffers from a lack of knowledge of the composition of coal itself. Most scientists interested in this matter, as has been brought out in discussions during the recent investigation of coal problems, appear to have only a vague idea of the components of coal and their origin. Some are even in doubt as to whether substances derived from the wood and resins of plants form a part of coal; and few seem to have more than the dimmest idea of what are the components of coal, the condition in which these now exist, and the transformations that they haye undergone. Although during the paiilt century or more many co.rrect observations have been made and recorded, these were falsely or inadequately interpreted, so that many of the interpretations rendered are contradictory. As a result there has been great confusion. Many of the observations made in the past, although accurate and correct, could not be explained, because the principles involved in a correct solution of the problem were not then known. For example, Parkinson, Hutton, Petzhold, Guembel, and others made valuable discoveries regarding the processes by which plant substances are transformed into coal, but as the principles involved are those of colloidal chemistry, a science not known to the scientific world of that time, the observed facts could not be interpreted and the solution of the whole problem was blocked. The explanation of the true meaning of the alternating bright and dull bands so familiar in all ordinary bituminous coals afforCls another example. This banding has been observed and recorded from the earliest times, and has led to the forming of many false theories. Some gAologists, for example, have endeavored to explain the bands as due to alternating climatic conditions during the coal-forming period. Had the geologists known the true nature of coal they could not have made this mistake nor many others made in the past. To fill in a few of these gaps and to clarify some of the existing confusion is the aim of this paper. The immediate cause that led the author to investigate further the composition of coal and the origin and structure of its constituents was that when an attempt was made to discover the meaning of the coking and noncoking properties of coal a more exact knowledge of the nature of coal was required than was then available.

There is increasing demand for geotechnical contractors to commit to carbon reduction, net zero or science based targets. A lot of focus has therefore been placed on using low carbon materials and low emission rigs. However, whilst these are ways to help reduce carbon, there is a need to look beyond just substituting materials and fuels to meet net zero. Using the IEMA carbon hierarchy, there is a need to first look at eliminating and reducing emissions, before considering substitute materials. For example, in geotechnical designs, this may mean considering using ground improvement or reducing the number of piles, before considering using low carbon cements. Equally, for remaining emissions, this hierarchy means considering carbon negative products to offset emissions, such as ground source heat pumps. This hierarchy can also be applied throughout geotechnical contractor organisations. For example, considering video conferencing for meetings, before considering public transport or using an electric vehicle. This article explores the carbon hierarchy and how it can be applied to all areas of a geotechnical contractor’s business. Only through embedding this hierarchy across the business can geotechnical contractors achieve the step change required to meet net zero.

ABSRACT: In this paper numerical simulation of jointed block mass behaviour obtained in an experimental study has been presented. Singh et al. (2002) conducted extensive tests on the jointed model materials with several joint configurations. The results of this experimental study were used to validate the strength behaviour of numerical block mass model developed using professionally available software. This software basically contains different kinds of material models. From the results of numerical simulation the existence of strength anisotropy was observed. The strength anisotropy so obtained has been compared with the experimental values reported by Singh et al. (2002). The anisotropic curves in both cases are U-shaped with flat base. They show good agreement in sliding mode of failure zone in which inclination ß (= 90° - ?) of joint set-I lie between 20° to 40° for all cases of interlocking. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In dieser numerischen Papiersimulation des verbundenen Blockmasse Verhaltens, das in einer experimentellen Studie erhalten wird, ist dargestellt worden. Singh et al. (2002) leiteten umfangreiche Tests auf den verbundenen vorbildlichen Materialien mit einigen gemeinsamen Konfigurationen. Die Resultate dieser experimentellen Studie wurden verwendet, um das Stärke Verhalten des numerischen Blockmasse Modells zu validieren, das mit professionell vorhandener Software entwickelt wurde. Diese Software enthält im Allgemeinen unterschiedliche Arten der materiellen Modelle. Von den Resultaten der numerischen Simulation wurde das Bestehen von Stärke Anisotrophie beobachtet. Introduction This paper deals with the operations and plant of the Craigmont Corundum Project, formerly of Wartime Metals Corporation but now under the Mines Section of the Resources Development Branch of the Department of Reconstruction and Supply. Corundum is recovered by the re-treatment of an old tailing deposit at Craigmont, Ontario. Crude concentrates so produced are shipped to the plant of the American Abrasives Company, Inc., at Westfield, Mass., for final processing and distribution to the abrasive industry. The plant was recently described in a paper entitled Craigmont Corundum which was presented by the writer before the Chicago meeting of the A.I .M.E. in February, 1946. General The Project is located on? lots 4 and 5, concession XVIII, township of Raglan, Renfrew county, Ontario, near the village of Combermere, which is on Highway 62. The property is about 135 miles from Ottawa. The general area enjoys a pleasant climate with moderate summer temperatures, though the winters are rather severe, the mercury frequently falling to - 35 deg. F. The excellent boating, fishing, and hunting have made the district a favourite resort for tourists. Lumbering is the main industry. Some farming is carried on, but the soil is poor and much of the land is hilly and rocky. There are no other operating mines in the immediate vicinity, though several 'industrial minerals', including mica, feldspar, nepheline, beryl, socialite, and others have been produced in the area. The district is drained by the York and Madawaska rivers and is generously dotted with large and small lakes. The general elevation is about 1,000 feet above sea level, though numerous hills rising several hundred feet give a rolling appearance to the landscape.

WHEN gold was discovered in California, and San Francisco grew almost over night from a handful of people to many thousands, one of the first difficulties experienced was the lack of money. Gold dust in considerable quantities was rushed into the city from the various mining camps but there was no money. Purchases were paid for by weighing out dust in hand scales. We can appreciate' the difficulty of paying for a drink or buying a postage stamp under these conditions. All this gold was in the form of dust from placer workings and the first metallurgists were the assayers' who melted and refined this gold, casting it into bars which were weighed, assayed, stamped with fineness; value, and the name of the assayer. Many .of these plants were of considerable size, handling shipments that were accumulated by banks and express companies throughout the "Diggings" and sent to San Francisco to be shipped by water to the eastern states. This report presents analyses of crude oil from most of the fields in the United States producing 2,500 barrels per day or more. The purpose of the report is threefold : 1) To present detailed analyses of crude-oil samples from as many al possible of the important fields in the United States. On January 1, 1947, there were 340 fields producing 2,500 barrels & day or more. Analyses for 283 of these fie1ds are presented. Fifty-seven fields have been omitted because the Bureau of Mines did not have analyses or the crude oils being produced. As one sample was not representative of the promotion from several of the fields, two analyses are given for each field of this kind. (2) To compile these analyses, many of which have not been published previously in a single report. Since the publication of Bulletin 291 in 1928, there has been no report showing analyses of crude petroleum from fields throughout the United states, but a number of separate reports according to area or state have been issued. Many of these are out of print. (3) To provide a means of ready comparison of the properties of crude oils from different areas of the United states.

During the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected several lots of ore' from properties in the vicinity of Winkelman, Ariz. As none of the ores would be marketable directly, an investigation was made to determine their amenability to concentration by ore dressing. The Geronimo group of claims is in Pinal County, 8 miles west of Winkelman, Ariz. The manganese oxides occur as cementing material in ore zones of conglomerate. Representative samples of a 2-ton lot of ore cut from outcrops of two lenticular deposits were laboratory-tested. Two 1-ton samples from the Benningfield property were similar in physical characteristics but differed in grade. This claim is 11-1/2 miles south of Winkelman and about 1 mile west of the San Pedro River on the south side of Putman, Wash. The manganese minerals occurred as nodules and lenses, replacing limestone, in a capping over a dark, igneous dike. The North Star group consists of five claims on the west side of the San Pedro River 14 miles south of Winkelman. The ore consists of a low-grade, manganese oxide-calcite occurrence interspersed with stringers of higher-grade material and is present as filling in a fissure zone in porphyry. Two samples were obtained by the examining engineer; one sample represented run-of-mine material, the other represented ore from the vein that could be hand-sorted or selectively mined.

"Agnico-Eagle (AE) has been operating their Kittila Mine in Northern Finland since 2008. The mine has experienced considerable ore flow problems with ratholing, bridging and freezing in their mill feed bin since start up. In the first winter of operation, the entire central portion of the contents of the cylindrical flat-bottomed 2000 tonne mill feed bin froze. Flow was erratic and could only be achieved through small diameter ratholes. To maintain a reasonable, albeit limited, feed to the mill, the bin had to be kept less than ½ full and a portable steam generator was brought in to melt the frozen agglomerates that frequently blocked the outlets. The combination of limited surge capacity and frequent outages required the crushing plant to operate 24/7 and resulted in inconsistent production levels and high operating costs.AE had planned to expand the processing plant to increase throughput by about 30% when they transitioned from open pit to underground ore. These plans presented an opportunity to improve the material handling.To avoid the problems experienced with the original mill feed bin, AE enlisted Jenike & Johanson Ltd. (J&J) to test samples of the ore, and based on the measured flow properties to provide design recommendations to ensure that the new mill feed bin would operate reliably. The new 2000 tonne expanded flow mill feed bin and apron feeder were installed in 2014 and are now supplying almost 93% of the total mill feed with the remaining coming from the original bin.IntroductionIn early 2009, AE engaged J&J to visit their then recently opened Kittila mine and mill in Northern Finland (Figure 1). Over the first half-year of operation, production had been restricted in the ore handling and storage system by flow problems such as ratholing, bridging and freezing including blockages of chutes and hoppers as a result of frozen fines buildup and large frozen agglomerates. AE wanted to increase production in the existing open pit mine and mill feed operation and also wanted to avoid similar ore handling problems when they commissioned the new underground mining system under development at that time."
