"The Didipio Gold-Copper project in the Philippines has been a well-defined reasonably high gold grade porphyry for almost two decades. OceanaGold are now bringing the project into production in late 2012 and have recently reoptimised the project with the goal of combining the inherent high grades with higher through-put than previously proposed that will see strong initial metal production. The project was discovered and well defined by 1995, but has seen some obstacles to development, namely sovereign risk, capital cost and project funding. The project strengths over this time that have kept the flames alive are: strong grades large orebody with low stripping ratios a simple beneficiation process and a clean high-grade concentrate strong support from the Philippines government.The initial study in 1998 used Gold and Copper price assumptions of $325/oz and $0.95 lb respectively. Today reserves are based on $950 and $2.85. So, being a porphyry with a large reducing grade halo, the deposit now lends itself to extraction on a much larger scale than before, without any significant capital expenditure as a larger open pit now dominates the project.Didipio is a game changer for OceanaGold, so it has been important to learn from history and to capitalise on a strong initial metal production profile. The project sits in a reasonably remote mountainous area of Luzon which sees annual typhoons and numerous short duration high intensity rainfall events and two rivers flowing through the project area, so it has not been without some innovative technical solutions.CITATION:Redden, R, 2012. With copper at its host depressed price in several years, producers are looking at every opportunity to cut costs in order to continue operating. Some of the measures that have been applied by different companies include reduction in manpower, high grading, and in some cases partial shutdowns. The most beneficial cost cutting measure implemented by Southern Peru Copper Corporation was to steepen the slope of the final pit limit from a conservative 37 degrees to an average of 48 degrees. By doing so, substantial cash outlays were saved. Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) operates two open pit copper mines and concentrators in the southern part of Peru, about 150 kilometers from the Chilean bordar. The Toquepala Mine went into production in 1960 and the Cuajone Mine in 1976. Both mines use shovel, truck and train operations. The trains, which haul ore to the crusher or waste to the dumps, are loaded either directly by shovels or by a transfer system. The Toquepala Concentrator treats an average of 43,000 tons per day and the Cuajone Concentrator an average of 55,000 tons per day. Concentrates are shipped via a 200 kilometer railroad to the port city of Ilo where the SPCC smelter is located. The annual production in the smelter from both mines is 290,000 tons of blister copper.

In today's highly competitive worldwide market, it is becoming extremely important for managers to make sure that all resources are used where needed the most. That way, all resources are generating added value, process control equipments are maintained in an optimal state for best performance, and final product is produced at least cost. Performance monitoring is the only way to ensure that everyone is working on top priorities toward the same goal. How can we add value to these warehouses of data? The data is there and the information is hidden; it is just waiting to be extracted. A process performance monitoring system is able to determine if a loop, a system, a unit, or a plant meets the expected performances. The system prioritizes the areas that need attention. It also provides historical reports of the plant status by areas, by loops, and by identified problems. This information is provided to different categories of users in an appropriate format for each one. The system also includes diagnostics and tools to detect and analyze problems.

A YEAR ago, ,at the Institute's dinner, I closed my A remarks with the words: "The scientist devotes his life to the advancement of learning; the engineer gives his to the advancement of living." May 1 begin tonight where I left off then and speak first of the distinction between science and engineering? This difference is a difference both in purpose and in method: it is the sharp contrast between theory and practice; it marks the broad gap between dream and attainment. Sometimes it happens that the investigator is also the builder and applies what he discovers, yet the distinction between science and engineering serves to point out the broad dependence of the engineer upon his brother the scientist. You remember .the old - saying that "where there is no vision the people perish" translate this into modern experience and we may say that "where there is no science, the engineer fails."

The design of dippers for cable shovels has essentially remained unchanged for the last 100 years. In the past 10 years, shovel manufacturers have started taking another look at dipper design, resulting in changes that have borne models from major manufacturers that address some of the wear conditions and material retention problems that dominate maintenance and operational costs. However, with the exception of added lateral curvatures to the front and corners of the dipper, the geometry is essentially unchanged. This paper looks at the criteria that have resulted in the first new cutting dipper design in a century. The design is based on kinematic considerations, reflected in a revolutionary geometry that matches the range of motions of the shovel, designed to minimize wear, impact loading and power required to dig, thus maximizing productivity for a minimum energy requirement. The shape configuration is such that the weight of the dipper is reduced through wall thickness, enabling a larger capacity dipper to be conceived for the same shovel. Benefits are reflected in reduced operational and maintenance costs and increased productivity.

Future ore bodies will, most likely, be more costly to find, mine and process than those now in production because most of them will be of lower grade or found deeper. To evaluate an ore deposit for extraction of metal values it is important to select the optimum economic process from among the many available options. The physical and chemical behavior of the minerals present should govern the process selection. Process mineralogy which combines mineralogy and petrography with process development engineering generates the data on mineralogy, composition and texture of gangue and valuable minerals from which the optimum process steps can be selected in the commercial design of the ore processing plant. These insights also help in solving operating problems caused by changes in the ore body

"The worldwide demand for ornamental stones in building construction is motivating the use of their wastes, generated during fabrication, to produce compound stones. This work has as its objective to investigate the production of an ornamental compound marble (OCM) under vacuum and compression processing of a polyester matrix composite with addition of marble waste as load and as filler. Square OCM composite plates were subjected to compression and flexural mechanical tests. Samples were analyzed to obtain the density and water absorption. The OCM composites presented properties within the expected range of an artificial stone.IntroductionMarble is a limestone, composed mainly of calcite, more or less crystallized by metamorphism that ranges from granular to compact in texture. It has a density 2.7 g/cm3 and its porosity is approximately 0.4%. The UNI 8458 standard defined marble as: ""every crystalline rock constituted mainly by minerals with a Mohs hardness equal to 3-4"". In marble production around70 - 75% of whole extract material is lost in byproducts generation [1,2].In function of large volume of residues generated, the ornamental stones industry has attracted ever more the attention of environmentalists [3].Actually the marble can be pulverized to obtain calcium carbonate for industrial applications. It is also possible to obtain a thinner powder to produce concretes [l]. Some authors study the use of stone residues in concrete mortars and ceramic bricks, getting better properties to these materials [3,4].The marble residues can be also used in engineered stones, or ''agglomerated"" stones, production. The most common engineered stones in the market consist, like a polymer concretes, in polymer matrix composites incorporating petreous components. In the formulation of the engineered stones, the particulate or granular petreous components are the result of fragmentation or trituration processes to which natural stones were submitted to [ 5]."

The grinding process in the mining industry has seen an increased throughput to accomplish greater production and lower overall production costs. Up to 8-9 MW, a single motor can be connected to drive the mill through a pinion and ring gear. Above the single-pinion drive limit, the dual pinion approach was developed to allow two drive motors to be used. This allowed the mill input power to be increased to 16-18 MW. Recent developments in clutch and ring gear materials and design are allowing greater input powers of up to 20 MW to be considered. To avoid damage to the ring gear by uneven load sharing between the two motors, it is critical that the two machines accurately share load. This is typically achieved by either drives capable of controlling load torque between motors or using a GE proprietary control system that accurately controls the load torque from each motor.

This report describes a study of beryllium recovery from sulfate leach liquor by di-2-ethylhexyl phosphate (EHPA) solvent extraction in conjunction with caustic stripping. The work was one phase of Bureau of Mines research on process development for Spor Mountain, Utah, ores. Solution for the solvent extraction studies was prepared by sulfuric acid leaching of ore containing 0.6 pet BeO, Before solvent extraction of beryllium, the leach liquor was treated to prevent coextraetion of iron by either (1) removal of ferric iron by amine solvent extraction or (2) reduction of ferric iron to nonextractable ferrous iron by treatment with sulfur dioxide. Beryllim was extracted from the aqueous leach liquor by countercurrent multistage contacting with a kerosine solution of EHPA. The loaded organic solution was stripped with sodim hydroxide solution. Subsequently, beryllium hydroxide was precipitated by boiling the sodium beryllate strip solution and converted to beryllium oxide of 98 pct BeO-grade by calcining. Material of this grade can be directly processed into beryllium-copper alloy or be used as starting material for further refining to produce high-purity, nuclear-grade beryllium. Over 90 pct of the beryllium contained in the leach liquor was recovered as beryllia.

"A 17 story building was constructed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on a site with a long history of development. Most recently the site supported a dewatering well and craneway to service two adjacent drydocks. The subsurface conditions generally consist of the following strata and approximate depths: miscellaneous fill and debris to 20 ft., organic soils to 35 ft., liquefiable sand to 45 ft., varved clay to 65 ft., glacial till to 95 ft. and gneiss bedrock.Hollow core bar piles replaced 18 in. diameter caissons on a 1.67:1 basis. The resulting service loads on the hollow bar piles were 600 kips compression, 21 kips lateral, 180 kips tension and 450 inch-kips moment. The top 30 feet of the hollow bar was cased with a 16 in. x 0.375 in. Grade 50 steel pipe. The piles were socketed 6 feet into bedrock. An extensive load testing program confirmed the axial and lateral load capacities. The paper will also discuss some adjustments to the installation procedure based on the load test program.PROJECTThe hollow bar piles were installed to support a 95,000 sf footprint, 17-story office building at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Brooklyn Navy Yard was first developed in the late 1700’s to build merchant vessels. The federal government purchased the old docks and adjoining 40 acres in 1801. The site was an active U. S. Naval Shipyard from 1806 to its decommissioning in 1966. At its peak in World War II it employed 70,000 people, 24 hours a day. Since 1966 the property has been converted to private manufacturing and commercial activity.The site is located between Dry Docks 2 and 3. The adjacent drydocks extend 40 to 43 feet below grade. The drydock walls are restrained by tierods extending back to deadman anchors. The site is also underlain by piles that were installed to support rail lines and a craneway. The building footprint also covered an 85 ft. wide, 70 ft. deep dewatering well which had a thick slab. The structural engineer for the project, ARUP, designed the building to span over the dewatering well.SUBSURFACE CONDITIONSIn September 2014, Langan Engineering conducted a geotechnical engineering study for the project. Figure 1 provides a subsurface profile through the long axis of the site. The general soil profile was very erratic but generally consisted of miscellaneous fill and debris to 20 ft., organic soils to 35 ft., liquefiable sand to 45 ft., varved clay to 65 ft., glacial till to 95 ft. and gneiss bedrock. The fill contained numerous obstructions from the over 200 years of site development. The organic soils were mostly very weak and compressible organic silt. The depths and thicknesses of the varved clay, and sand varied"

Attempts have been made to predict the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mix-turesl-6 but these methods have not been extended to the higher pressures and tem-peratures that are currently encountered in some producing formations. Furthermore, the methods of prediction at present avail-able have not been tested in a sufficient number of cases to ensure their applica-bility to all naturally occurring hydrocar-bon mixtures, even at the lower pressures and temperatures. For these reasons the behavior of a number of hydrocarbon mix-tures from a field in which the subsurface pressures are above 4500 lb. per sq. in.t and the temperatures are in the neighbor-hood of 250°F. was investigated. Method The objective of this program was to determine the volumetric behavior of ma-terial as it existed in the reservoir as a function of pressure, temperature and com-position. Strictly speaking, this cannot be accomplished in any simple fashion. How- ever, the variations in composition that are encountered within a producing reservoir may be approximated roughly by means of mixtures made up of two arbitrarily chosen constituents. Experience indicates that the liquid and gas phases from a high-pressure gas trap afford a simple source of material for this purpose. Throughout this discus-sion the samples of the gas phase and liquid phase from the production trap will be called the "trap-gas sample" and the "trap-liquid sample," respectively. The volumetric behavior of both of the trap samples was determined throughout the temperature interval between 100" and 250°F. at pressures up to 5000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the behavior of eight different mixtures containing varying proportions of the two trap samples was studied throughout the same temperature and pressure intervals. The experimental results yielded information concerning the specific volume of the material as a function of pressure, temperature and the relative quantity of the trap samples. The relative amount of each of the paraffin hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight than n-hexane was determined for each of the trap samples. In addition, the specific weight, viscosity and average molecular weight of the hexanes-and-heavier fraction of the trap-liquid sample were determined as well as similar information for each of five fractions separated from this material by distillation. From these data the weight fractions of each of the components from methane through pentane were determined for the trap samples and eight systematically chosen mixtures. Research and development has been carried out on the patented Dynamic Rock Anchor, tradenamed DYNA-ROK and DYNA-ROK PLUS Anchors, which are manufactured and marketed by Ingersoll-Rand Company. This paper will present the results of field testing of this revolutionary new concept in ground control. Geologic conditions will be described where the plastic sleeve of the DYWA-ROK anchor alone is sufficient to provide anchorage and also, where in softer ground conditions, the DYWA-ROK PLUS is applied. The rationale for making the decision as to the type of fixture to be employed, the length of plastic tube to be used and the quantity of resin are explained. Pull test data will be shown from eight different coal seams in the Eastern United States where the product has been installed.

ROTARY kiln operators will agree that some of the most severe conditions a refractory must stand occur in the hot zone of a kiln burning Portland cement, dead burn dolomite, magnesite, peri-clase, and similar materials. Frequently the operator is faced with factors beyond his control which drastically shorten the life of refractories. Shutdown due to mechanical failure can be serious if the period is of sufficiently long duration to cause the dropping of coating or the loosening of the lining. A change in slurry can affect the coating and cause ring buildup. A change in type of fuel and its effect upon the flame can cause a shift in location of the hottest zone. Weekend shutdowns or any other interruption can cause the operator trouble and may damage the refractories, since stopping and starting a rotary kiln is certainly more difficult than stopping and starting a motor. Some operators have tried to set an estimate of damage for each shutdown in equivalent days of running time. Conditions affecting the refractory may be roughly grouped in four classes: chemical attack, mechanical stress, thermal shock, and abrasion. Chemical Attack: The drive to obtain maximum production through a kiln demands maximum operating temperatures, temperatures which are limited more by the ringing up or melting of the clinker. This can cause interface temperatures at the junction of coating and refractory which require the use of a basic kiln block to withstand the chemical attack. Chemical changes take place within the refractory itself, especially in chemically bonded or unburned kiln blocks. These changes cause the formation of the ceramic or burned bond. Migrating liquids or fluxes from the kiln charge have an effect within the refractory and lead to mineral or glass formation. The alkalies, sodium and potassium, migrate into the refractory as silicates, chlorides, sulphates or other salts. They may move under capillary action or may be caused to move by volatilization with condensation in the cooler portion. Mechanical Stress: Concentrated stress may be caused by several factors or combinations thereof. I—The rings of refractories must be kept tight and rigid within the kiln, and this alone demands considerable force to hold the blocks in place. So that the force will not be concentrated, the blocks should fit the circle as perfectly as possible, with the faces in contact overall. 2—As the kiln is heated, thermal expansion takes place at the hot end of the kiln block. Since this disturbs the plane face it too can cause a concentrated stress at the two ends of the block, and shearing stress can be set up within the brick itself because of the difference in expansion between the two ends. 3—If a lining becomes loose and moves in the shell very severe stress can be set up, and as the kiln rotates this load changes and gives the effect of repeated loading. Permanent expansion of the refractory can also cause severe loading. 4—Not least important, flexing of the kiln is frequently the cause of concentrated stresses. Thermal Shock: Thermal shock, the result of heating and cooling too rapidly, occurs on starting and stopping or when a large patch of coating drops, exposing the bricks. Again, its destructive effect is often the result of phase change, liquid to solid or the reverse; dense refractories loaded with glass-forming impurities are particularly susceptible. Thermal shock is a. problem with refractories set in the wall or roof of a stationary furnace, and becomes even more serious in a rotary kiln, the tendency to spa11 being magnified with movement and concentration of stress. Uniform rate of feed and loading insures both better coating and a more uniform stress. Abrasion: If the refractories do not take a coating, abrasion can become a most destructive factor. Movement of the lining in shell or movement of loose blocks causes abrasion, which is also most destructive if the refractories do not take a coating. An analysis of the problem of basic lining for the hot zone reveals, therefore, a number of desirable characteristics: high refractoriness, basic chemical reaction, resistance to spalling, good strength at all stages, ability to take coating, true sizing, volume stability, and abrasion resistance. ROTARY kiln operators will agree that some of the most severe conditions a refractory must stand occur in the hot zone of a kiln burning Portland cement, dead burn dolomite, magnesite, periclase, and similar materials. Frequently the operator is faced with factors beyond his control which drastically shorten the life of refractories. Shutdown due to mechanical failure can be serious if the period is of sufficiently long duration to cause the dropping of coating or the loosening of the lining. A change in slurry can affect the coating and cause ring buildup. A change in type of fuel and its effect upon the flame can cause a shift in location of the hottest zone. Weekend shutdowns or any other interruption can cause the operator trouble and may damage the refractories, since stopping and starting a rotary kiln is certainly more difficult than stopping and starting a motor. Some operators have tried to set an estimate of damage for each shutdown in equivalent days of running time. Conditions affecting the refractory may be roughly grouped in four classes: chemical attack, mechanical stress, thermal shock, and abrasion. Chemical Attack: The drive to obtain maximum production through a kiln demands maximum operating temperatures, temperatures which are limited more by the ringing up or melting of the clinker. This can cause interface temperatures at the junction of coating and refractory which require the use of a basic kiln block to withstand the chemical attack. Chemical changes take place within the refractory itself, especially in chemically bonded or unburned kiln blocks: These changes cause the formation of the ceramic or burned bond. Migrating liquids or fluxes from the kiln charge have an effect within the refractory and lead to mineral or glass formation. The alkalies, sodium and potassium, migrate into the refractory as silicates, chlorides, sulphates or other salts. They may move under capillary action or may be caused to move by volatilization with condensation in the cooler portion. Mechanical Stress: Concentrated stress may be caused by several factors or combinations thereof. 1-The rings of refractories must be kept tight and rigid within the kiln, and this alone demands considerable force to hold the blocks in place. So that the force will not be concentrated, the blocks should fit the circle as perfectly as possible, with the faces in contact overall. 2-As the kiln is heated, thermal expansion takes place at the hot end of the kiln block. Since this disturbs the plane face it too can cause a concentrated stress at the two ends of the block, and shearing stress can be set up within the brick itself because of the difference in expansion between the two ends. 3-If a lining becomes loose and moves in the shell very severe stress can be set up, and as the kiln rotates this load changes and gives the effect of repeated loading. Permanent expansion of the refractory can also cause severe loading. 4-Not least important, flexing of the kiln is frequently the cause of concentrated stresses. Thermal Shock: Thermal shock, the result of heating and cooling too rapidly, occurs on starting and stopping or when a large patch of coating drops, exposing the bricks. Again, its destructive effect is often the result of phase change, liquid to solid or the reverse; dense refractories loaded with glass-forming impurities are particularly susceptible. Thermal shock is a problem with refractories set in the wall or roof of a stationary furnace, and becomes even more serious in a rotary kiln, the tendency to spall being magnified with movement and concentration of stress. Uniform rate of feed and loading insures both better coating and a more uniform stress. Abrasion: If the refractories do not take a coating, abrasion can become a most destructive factor. Movement of the lining in shell or movement of loose blocks causes abrasion, which is also most destructive if the refractories do not take a coating. An analysis of the problem of basic lining for the hot zone reveals, therefore, a number of desirable characteristics: high refractoriness, basic chemical reaction, resistance to spalling, good strength at all stages, ability to take coating, true sizing, volume stability, and abrasion resistance. China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of non-ferrous metals. In recent years, significant progress has been made in research and commercial application of pressure leaching technology to produce some nonferrous metals. Research and development activities include a low-pressure, low-temperature leaching technology for complex copper concentrates, a hematite process to treat pressure leach solutions from zinc concentrates, and a pressure leaching - solvent extraction process for molybdenum and rhenium. Examples of commercial practices include a two-stage pressure leach technology in a zinc plant in Danxia, a direct leaching technology in a zinc plant in Zhuzhou, a high pressure acid leaching process for a nickel laterite project in RAMU, and a pressure leaching technology to treat arsenic sulfides in a plant in Guixi. The development of pressure leaching technology for the recovery of lead, vanadium, gallium, germanium, and precious metals in China will also be described in this paper.

MR. J. C. NICHOLSON: The author has discussed his subject in a very thorough manner. One difficulty is the tendency to regard a 'permitted' explosive as a 'safe' explosive. There is no such article as a safe explosive; any explosive is only as safe as the man who handles it. In making up the primer, the method illustrated in the paper is alright for the ordinary explosive but not so for the sheathed explosive, for the sheathing would be punctured. MR. T. L. McCALL: I fee! quite certain that there would be little, if any, trouble from flame shots or misfires if the author's suggestions were carried out. There is a tendency on the part of the shot-firer to over-shoot, so as to bring clown more coal for the miner, and frequently a shot has not sufficient burden imposed upon it. Shooting one hole may not only lessen the burden on an adjacent hole, but may practically release it altogether, in which case the second hole should be fired with a very small charge, or perhaps it might not be necessary to shoot it at all. While the paper refers to shooting in the coal only, it should be under-stood that the instructions given are equally applicable to brushing shots. I do not wish to bring up any contentious point, but would the author say a word on cushioning with air gaps and on multiple shooting? Single shooting in rock might open up a feeder of gas which could be ignited by the ?second shot.
