United States Steel's Cumberland Coal Operations is located in Greene County in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania. The mine and related facilities have been in operation since September of 1977. Production from this mine, U. S. Steel's first commercial coal mining venture, will eventually reach a level of 2.72 million mt of clean coal per year and is totally committed to electric power generation. Cumberland is a slope mine in the Pittsburgh seam and is mined by continuous mining machines and longwall. The coal from the mine is trans- ported by belt to the surface, taken through a rotary breaker for initial preparation, and stored in raw coal silos. It is then processed through the preparation plant and taken to a clean coal silo where it is held for train loading. Cumberland Mine operates its am 28.16 km railroad to transport the coal to the Monongahela River. The unit train consists of thirty-one 90 mt cars. The coal, once loaded on barges, is then shipped to the customer. Cumberland Mine is one of the most modern coal preparation and unit train loading systems in the nation. The preparation plant is de- signed to receive coal from the silos at a rate of 720 at per hour. The +6.35 mm material is screened out and cleaned in a Daniels heavy media vessel with two 3.35 m weirs. Minus 6.35 mm material is fed to sixteen #88 Deister concentrating tables. The cleaned coal from this circuit is dewatered, and all effluents from the mechanical dewatering report to the classifying Cyclone sump for classification through ten 35.6 cm cyclones. The cyclones overflow material (-150 mesh) is processed through two banks of three 8.5 m3 Denver D.R. flotation machines. The cyclone underflow pro- duct (28-1 0 mesh) is processed in two banks of 5 six 2.83 m Denver Sub A machines. The clean flotation product is then dewatered in Bird screen bowl centrifuges, blended with the other clean coal size fractions, and the total plant product further dewatered in a thermal dryer.

IT is assumed that the word "college" for the present purpose signifies technical school or technical department of a college or university. About ten or fifteen years ago, and more recently in some instances the contact between the technical school and the industry, as represented by the operating companies, was very limited. The school made no effort to place its graduates in the industry and the graduate's first position was obtained by his own or his friends' efforts; the friend often was a professor. The industries, or the operating companies, seemingly had little interest in the training of the technical graduates they employed or in seeking to discover their personal characteristics and fitness for the work. In the public mind there was little relation between technical training and industry. Such training was in the field of education; industry was in the field of business; and the interrelationship was not a matter of common knowledge or concern.

In a recent study of Fe-Si alloys Walter and Koch' observed pairs of dislocations in Fe-6.25 pct Si crystals rolled to reductions of 10 pct and subsequently annealed for 1 hr at 650°C. They interpreted these pairs as being due to stacking faults. From the spacing of the dislocations a stacking-fault energy of 15 to 19 ergs per sq cm was calculated. These authors did not pay any attention to the order -disorder phenomena in Fe-Si alloys. It is the purpose of this communication to report some preliminary results from a study of ordering and its influence on the plastic deformation of Fe-6.0 pct Si alloys. Our results suggest that the dislocation pairs observed by Walter and Koch may have been due to long-range order rather than to stacking faults. The alloys used in this investigation were prepared from pure electrolytic iron and silicon and were melted in argon. After hot working, strip tensile specimens were machined to a gage length of 70 mm and a thickness of 1 mm. The specimens were heat- treated for 2 hr at 1000°C, furnace-cooled, and subsequently deformed 2 pct in tension at 400°C. The strain rate was 5.6 X lo-' sec-'. Thin foils of the deformed specimens were prepared by means of the Bollman technique and examined in a Siemens Elmis-kop I at an accelerating voltage of 100 kv. In the Fe-Si system long-range ordering occurs at a silicon content of about 6 pct Si. In our alloys evidence for ordering is given by selected-area diffraction patterns which show extra reflections consistent with a super lattice of the D0 9 type. In addition, the dislocation arrangement in deformed specimens indicates that long-range order is present. A typical mi-crophotograph of a thin foil is shown in Fig. l. The dislocations are usually straight and parallel and laying in distinct directions. In the commonly observed (111) zone the projections of the dislocations are close to (113) and (oil). Observation of the image position indicates that the two dislocations in a pair have the same Burgers vector and hence constitute a superlattice dislocation.~ According to theory3 a superlattice dislocation in the DO3 structure consists of four ordinary dislocations connected by two types of antiphase boundaries as shown in Fig. 2. The I-395/SR-836/I-95 reconstruction project is an $818-million design-build construction effort that includes construction of viaduct, segmental and signature bridges in Miami leading into Miami Beach in Florida. Based on the load testing performed during the design phase, the design-build team determined that conventional driven pile and drilled shaft foundations were not feasible for support of segmental and signature bridges. Due to the weak limestone formation and successful use of auger cast-in-place (ACIP) piles in the Downtown Miami area on commercial developments, ACIP piles were selected as a foundation system to support bridges. This is the first time in history where the bridges will be supported by ACIP pile foundations in an interstate highway in the State of Florida. The design build-team worked closely with the Florida Department of Transportation to develop requirements for the load test program. The paper will provide an overview of the geotechnical data collected, results of dynamic/bi-directional load testing performed on test piles, data collected, installation of piles, and lessons learned. The load test program included a total of fifteen test piles with dynamic, bi-directional, and lateral load testing on 30 and 36-inch diameter ACIP piles and instrumented with thermal integrity profiling wires.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex são conhecidos por sua alta resistência mecânica e alta resistência à corrosão, propriedades que fundamentam sua crescente aplicação em setores químicos e petroquímicos. Tais propriedades estão associadas à microestrutura, que possui frações volumétricas semelhantes de ferrita e austenita, por meio de adições de elementos de liga como Cr, Mo e Ni. Entretanto em processos térmicos a altas temperaturas, este aço pode sofrer alterações microestruturais importantes, onde elementos de liga antes dispostos em solução sólida na matriz dão origem a precipitados intermetálicos, que geralmente são nocivos às propriedades de tenacidade e resistência à corrosão. Este trabalho tem por objetivo o estudo de transformações de fases decorrentes em ciclos não isotérmicos de resfriamento em um aço inoxidável duplex SAF 2205. O experimento contempla uma sequência de quatro ciclos térmicos simulados na Gleeble 3500®. Com o propósito de investigar o processo de precipitação de fases, fez-se o uso da técnica dilatométrica, onde foi possível determinar as temperaturas de transformação de fase nas amostras. Esta informação é validada através dos resultados obtidos no estudo microestrutural via microscopia óptica. Através da correlação entre a fração volumétrica da fase transformada e ensaio de dureza realizado também foi possível garantir a influência das fases encontradas nas propriedades do material.

"The low consumption of reagents can probably be attributed to a good clean type of ore. The cyanide level is kept at 0. 8 lb/ ton of solution and the lime at 1. 8 to 1.9 lb per ton of solution (pH 12. 2 to 12 .3). Experience in cutting down the lime level in half produced troubles in the presses, in the refinery and resulted in higher cyanide consumption. Finally the residue increased under these conditions, High lime always seems to prevent the trouble from occurring.A survey at one mine of the taxable work, performed in the mine shops for use in the mine, showed that under the new regulations, this had increased some 30 times what it was before the new rules came into effect on June 14, 1963.A water softener idea is incorporated at Lamaque with the crude addition of 100 lb of lime per shift to a spare agitator to precipitate the bicarbonates as carbonates from the water before it enters the mill. The lime titration of the softened water is about 0,2 to 0.3 lb per ton of solution (pH 11). This water is used mainly on the filters as washes."

C.-Are the results of the experiments in practical operation? WALTER 0. SNELLING.-There have been no large-scale operations up to the present. The necessary conditions of temperature are easily arranged for, but the required condition of pressure, 800 lb., is not so simple a matter. The company has been working on this problem, and at the refinery in Oklahoma work of this kind is now being carried on. The way in which an ordinary still will leak at 50 lb., and more at 100 lb., leaves some doubt in the mind of many as to what can be clone at a continuous working pressure of 800 lb. On the other hand, the fact that they are making ammonia abroad by a method which employs higher pressures and temperatures than anything involved in this method, leads me to believe that the difficulties, which will undoubtedly arise when this is attempted on a commercial scale, can be overcome. Machine learning is creating value in all facets of the mining industry, from exploration to production. The authors provide an accessible, high-level introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL); the latter being widely recognised as one of the most powerful forms of ML. In particular, the authors will introduce deep learning models known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), how they are applied, and the economic considerations necessary for determining when DL may be the right solution to de-risking complex block modelling problems. The authors present preliminary results from the mineral resource modelling study of the Jundee orogenic gold deposit, Yandal belt/gold province, Western Australia. The primary goal was to identify the direction and location of the narrow gold veins more accurately and demonstrate how non-linearly correlated elements are used as direct inputs to the resource model to assist with the target element’s grade prediction. This demonstrates that: (1) existing techniques for finding correlations between assayed elements do not adequately reflect the complex geology of the asset, (2) nonlinear correlations that are difficult to model as simple mathematical functions are representative of geological patterns in a deposit, and (3) non-linearly correlated assayed data, fed as inputs, increase the performance of the resource model as reconciled through blind tests. To conclude, the authors hypothesise that the patterns represented by the DL block models may be revealing the results of overprinting geological processes that generated mineral deposits. For example, the primary hydrothermal processes that deposited metals created depositional patterns that become particularly complex as a result of being overprinted, in part or in whole, by secondary physicochemical processes. This may explain why non-linear geochemical relationships have the capacity to generate more accurate block models of mineral deposits.

The Discrete Element Method is a numerical technique suitable for use in modeling the discontinuum behavior of jointed rock. The disadvantage of this method, in its application to analysis of underground excavations, is the necessity to discretize the complete problem domain. Since the far-field rock responds to the excavation as an elastic continuum, it may be appropriately represented by the Boundary Element Method. This exploits the inherent advantage of the Boundary Element Method in representing a quasi-infinite domain in terms of its internal surface geometry and associated boundary conditions. The procedures employed in developing a first-generation coupled Discrete Element-Boundary Element algorithm are described and the solution to a simple problem verifying the performance of the coupled code is presented. A procedure for numerical treatment of installed support systems is also presented.

Although floor failure at longwall faces has been traditionally associated with a soft floor, in many csses floor buckling has been observed just ahead of the longwall supports, despite the floor being a competent rock The floor failure is associated with the presence of weak bedding planes in the floor and the movement of strata towards the goaf opening. This paper presents the principles of the floor failure based on numerical modelling and field observations and outlines the practical approach to estimate the risks involved with floor failure.

"Geometallurgy is now recognised within the mining industry as an approach that can both maximise value and reduce the risks associated with resource development. The process of spatial ore variability testing for metallurgical response and the use of quick, inexpensive metallurgical proxies has been well developed in the past decade in industry and the literature, and via various collaborative research programs and laboratories. Technology continues to advance with new techniques such as hand-held analytical tools and automated hyperspectral core scanning, allowing for even faster, less expensive in situ geometallurgical testing.In the current mining industry downturn, a critical frontier of geometallurgy is in its application in short-term geological modelling (ore control) and mine planning, and the associated decision-making. This is the end game at which the hard-won knowledge of orebody variability can be exploited to add near-term value. In order for spatial block models to be fit-for-purpose for such tactical uses, they must be populated with key geometallurgical information and then have workflows that use this richer model as a basis of material allocation to destinations so that the true value of the resource is realised.We envision geometallurgy (geomet) programs designed to add and sustain value at two levels:‘Strategic geomet’ has a long-term strategic focus that actively uses all relevant data that helps predict processing performance such as bench-scale metallurgical tests, mineralogy, geochemistry, ore texture etc (‘the geometallurgical database’) to model spatial ore variability and metallurgical response throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). This will enable better resource definition, more optimal mine planning and scheduling, improved process design and sustaining capital strategy over the LOM. The value-realisation is gained by basing all these strategic decisions on spatial models that better reflect the actual value of blocks (or aggregates of blocks) in the model.‘Tactical geomet’ has a short- to medium-term tactical focus that, again, actively uses the geometallurgical database, but also includes new data derived during ore control activities (such as drilling and sampling) to inform allocation-to-destination decisions via the ore control process. This will enable improved efficiency (ie less error) in allocation of mining blocks as direct feed, stockpile or waste. Importantly, this efficiency will be measured in terms of value and not grade, which is an incomplete – and typically biased – proxy for value. The key benefit is that ore control will then be planned and executed on the basis of realised value.We therefore propose a twofold systematic and holistic, value-based geometallurgical process. This process needs to be planned and implemented in an integrated manner, noting that strategic and tactical geometallurgy can be worked on by the same professionals, sharing data, methodologies and potentially models. The Federal Bureau of Mines has conducted research in support of the National Aeronautical and Space Administration's (NASA) Apollo program to acquire fundamental scientific and engineering knowledge of lunar-mineral resources for NASA's Office of Advanced Research and Technology. Equipment and techniques were developed to conduct soil shear tests in a simulated lunar environment. Shear tests performed with this equipment in ultrahigh vacuum and controlled laboratory atmosphere showed that simulated lunar soil increased in strength in the simulated lunar environment.

Australia is a world leader in the design and operation of mines accessed by the decline method. Literature indicates that a number of metalliferous underground mines using the decline system are also increasing steadily. This increase has generated a great deal of interest in underground haulage systems in future due to the huge costs involved in the development of declines. Studies have also shown that the current method of accessing orebodies by the conventional decline method has proved to be expensive, especially for narrow vein deposits. This is because decline development costs are influenced by mine planning and design parameters as well as available haulage systems that the mining engineer can choose from. The current access method suggests that more waste material is being extracted because of the size of decline openings adopted (5.5 mW and 5.5 mH). Also the conventional 1:7 decline gradient and turning radius of 20 m makes decline lengths, as well as the duration of development, excessively longer. This paper discusses results of a mine design case study with monorail technology as a method of accessing and developing the decline. The proposed system is economical, has high advance rates and offers a significant reduction in capital expenditure. The study compares costs, development metres and the duration of decline development using the monorail system with the conventional (truck haulage) access method. Results obtained indicate that the monorail technology has the potential to reduce the decline length by over 62.6 per cent and decline costs by 63 per cent for the case study. The monorail system also reduces the total capital development costs by 22 per cent for the same case study. Due to rapid development resulting from increased advance rates and the shorter decline length coupled with smaller decline openings, the time to access the deposit reduced by 71.8 per cent. This case study demonstrates that the economics of narrow vein deposits can be improved significantly by using the monorail system of decline development.

In this study, a unique excavation system was characterized, utilizing waterjet technology as the primary tool for material removal during rehabilitation of reinforced concrete and shotcrete structural liners. Through empiric testing, this research seeks to validate the hypothesis that waterjet removal of these support systems will result in less unintended damage than conventional removal methods. The intent is to develop a viable technology that will reduce the collateral damage caused to surrounding liners during excavation, improve the adhesion between shotcrete and the substrate for longer lasting ground support, and improve overall safety for workers in underground environments. An analysis on the fracture mechanisms and operating parameters of each method was completed. Instrumented shotcrete panels were physically tested and examined through visual inspection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to compare substrate damage according to each testing method. After testing was completed, the data strongly indicates that waterjet cutting causes less collateral damage to the surrounding intact liner and substrate when compared to that of conventional impact hammers. This research is intended to provide a scientific basis for additional applied research in the rapid excavation and repair of shotcrete support systems.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 12,564-acre portion of the 34,795-acre Rockhouse Wilderness Study Area (CA-010-029) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Kern and Tulare Counties, CA, about 60 air mi northeast of Bakersfield at the south end of the Sierra Nevada. A review of the geologic and mining literature, and a field examination identified a turquoise and a gold prospect in the study area, and another gold prospect and a feldspar prospect within a mile of the study area boundary. Thirty-three rock and 16 alluvial samples were taken.

Siliceous float sampled in the Wafi River by CRA Exploration in 1977 assayed 22 g/t Au and 89 g/t Ag. Follow up in 1979 led to the discovery of outcropping mineralisation now known as Zone A. Soil sampling in 1980 and 1982 outlined a 350 m by 400 m area of >1 g/t Au at Zone A and smaller areas at Zones B, C and D. Thirty-one diamond holes were drilled between 1983 and 1986. Elders Resources continued evaluation of Zone A under a farming agreement between 1988 and 1990. Mineralised diorite porphyry was discovered in 1990 by drilling conceptual targets 500 m to the NE of Zone A. Evaluation of this copper-gold porphyry became the main focus of exploration for the next five years and a substantial resource was outlined within a single, discrete body. A review of the paths to project development in late-1995 highlighted the need for increased resources via a second mineralised porphyry and/or an additional resource of Zone A size to make the project viable. It was concluded that the greatest immediate potential for increasing the resource inventory was at Zone A itself where the mineralisation was open in all directions. Detailed mapping and drill core logging lead to the geologic and structural models being revised in early-1996. The objectives of the 1996 drill program were to extend the Zone A resource, to test for continuity of mineralisation westwards to Zone B, to better define the controls on gold mineralisation and to delineate high-grade blocks amenable to selective mining by infill drilling and 3D orebody modelling. The last drill hole of 1996 intersected 30 m at 4.6 g/t Au from 273 m in WR147, deep in the western limit of Zone A. This intersection gave impetus to continue drill testing towards Zone B. In April 1997, hole WR154 was drilled 100 m to the west of WR147 and intersected 20 m at 8.5 g/t Au and 70 m at 11.0 g/t Au at similar depths near the diatreme contact. Drill hole WR155 was then drilled 100 m to the west of WR154 and intersected 86m at 5.7 g/t Au and WR159 drilled 100 m to the south of WR154 intersected 36 m at 9.2 and 50 m at 4.4 g/t Au. A significant zone of essentially blind, high-grade gold was discovered beneath the dipping flank of a poorly mineralised diatreme in what became known as the Link Zone. The long history of evaluation has been driven by the conviction of a dedicated team that a mineralised system of the size and complexity of Wafi with strongly anomalous gold in outcrops over the entire Mount Golpu area must contain economic mineralisation hidden within it. The keys which redefined the direction of exploration and lead to the discovery of the blind, high-grade gold Link Zone were, in our view, the critical review of the project status, detailed geological and structural studies to define clear exploration targets and the necessary funding and persistence to carry this through.

The methane emission rate into an underground mine environment from overburden strata during longwall mining is impacted by reservoir and geomechanical characteristics of the coal measure rocks in the overlying strata, as well as the presence of any coal seam. The reservoir characteristics and how they change during mining potentially affect the performance of gob gas ventholes, which consequently impacts the efficiency of methane control in the mining environment. This study presents reservoir and elastic properties of coal measure rocks in the Lower Monongahela Group in Greene County, southwestern Pennsylvania, of the Northern Appalachian Basin. Since the source of methane in this region from underground mining is located between the Sewickley coal and the Pittsburgh coal, a specific emphasis was given to this interval. Core analyses were performed in the laboratory to determine rock porosity and permeability. Geophysical logging data (gamma, density, sonic) obtained from two exploration boreholes were used for evaluating formation boundaries, shale contents, log porosities, and geomechanical properties of formations. Permeability was also calculated using density-log data and empirical equations and compared with laboratory measurements and slug tests performed in isolated intervals of boreholes. The results presented in this study can be used as data sources for reservoir studies related to the production and control of methane.

For too long we, as an industry, have borne the brunt of irrational claims, poor science and even worse, journalism with regards to our affect on the environment. To some of us, the overwhelming media attention on greenhouse warming, the polluting outputs of mineral processing or unthinkable depletion of natural resources has left us embarrassed and more unfortunately has turned bright young people away from a career in the minerals industry.This paper shows the hypocrisy associated with an element of the green movement and dispels some general myths on mining disseminated by radical environmentalists.The fallacy of the greenhouse warming effect will be scrutinised by common sense and the mining industryÆs use of land will be discussed and put in proper perspective.Problems associated with safety and emissions and the means to overcome such are discussed briefly.

Underground coal mining machinery utilizes portable electric sables, "trailing cables." to obtain power from load centers or distribution boxes. Cables are frequently damaged since mobile equipment, poor lighting, and restricted space are inherent to coal mining operations. Normally, the damage is repaired by splicing--the joining of one or more severed conductors and replacing insulation and jacket. Figure 1 illustrates a typical single conductor splice. Although the repair seems simple, difficulty of the splicing process is exemplified by the many safety hazards and frequent production delays that result from defective splices. Forty-two cable splice related injuries were reported to the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1972 and 1973. Additionally, 17 splices related fires were reported in the three year period prior to December 1972. Assuming the damaged area is quickly located, an average splice time for a two conductor cable is twenty minutes. Some operators estimate this delay is incurred once per day per operating section. If one ton per minute is averaged throughout the shift, each unit could loose 4800 tons per year from splice delays. An estimated cost for materials and labor to make a splice is $20. The expenditure could result in a $4800 annual cost per section. The estimated expense does not include wages of other personnel waiting for the repair to be completed. Nevertheless, labor and materials cost is minor compared to the income lost from decreased production.

EDUCATIONAL benefits for veterans of World War II have largely removed one of the two former barriers to a college education for everyone, namely financial means and intellectual capacity. This latter limita¬tion has not kept privately endowed institutions from increasing 50 to 100 percent in size of student body, even after applying moderately rigid entrance standards. Growth of some land-grant universities, which cannot well exercise such restrictive judgements, has been even greater. After a weary board of admissions, subject to student, alumni, faculty, and even political pressures, has admitted double the former number of freshmen, the university's worries really begin: to find laboratory, classroom, and instructional facilities. If this were a one- or two-year problem, the answer would be simple: double up, hold night classes, particularly of laboratories, rent space, and have instructors work 24 class or contact hours a week instead of twelve (it takes usually two to three hours of outside work by the instructor for one hour in class). However, most engineering school faculty men are worn out now from four to five years of "accelerated" (frequently downward!) programs and they couldn't continue teaching in a way satisfactory to their own consciences on
