Neutron diffraction was applied to determine sheet textures by the transmission method. Cold-rolled and recrystallized copper sheets were investigated. The amount of cube texture was determined for three compositions, in which the phosphorus content was, respectively, 0, 0.005, and 0.03 wt pct. The heat treatment was in every case 8 sec at 650°C. In the two latter cases the cube texture was prevented. In addition a comparison with the X-ray diffraction transmission method was made with the 96 pct cold-rolled copper sheet. Outer parts of both (111) pole figures can be considered to be rather identical. This is seen from the fact that the intensity ratio ITD/120" was 0.45 for neutron diffraction and 0.40 for X-ray diffraction. Differences between the methods were discussed in detail. Features peculiar to neutron and X-ray diffraction in texture studies were listed and compared. In this work neutron diffraction was applied to determine sheet textures. Specifically, it was desired to ascertain whether this method can be used to reveal differences when compared to other methods. In addition, the amount of the cube texture in copper sheets was determined as a function of phosphorus content. Previous applications of neutron diffraction to texture problems include the following: nickel wires,' wire of some bcc metals,' and uranium bars.3 In the neutron diffraction technique the greatest difference is in the sample—its method of production and its volume. A sample needs no treatment and its volume is roughly 105 times larger than the volume of an X-ray diffraction sample. The cold-rolled sheet was investigated both by neutron diffraction and by X-ray diffraction, because it is expected that, due to large number of defects, possible differences in the results of the two methods would be revealed. It is a well-known fact that X-ray lines show broadening when cold-worked. Analysis has shown that this is based chiefly on small crystalline size, micro-stresses, and/or faults.4'5 Neutrons are sensitive to the above-mentioned disturbing factors as well, but circumstances in diffraction are different from the X-ray case. Because the sample represents a larger volume, the result is an average over that volume. In addition, it can be assumed that the sample has preserved its original structure, because it needs no special preparation. The particular limitation of neutrons is the relatively low neutron intensity available from nuclear reactors. This decreases the resolution as compared to the X-ray diffraction methods. Furthermore, absorption mainly reduces diffracted X-ray intensity, while multiple scattering effects, i.e., secondary extinction, disturb neutron diffraction. SO neutrons and X-rays behave in a different way when interacting with matter. As in other structural investigations, one can utilize this difference in texture studies as well. One cold-rolled and three recrystallization textures in copper sheets were investigated by neutron diffraction. The samples were produced at the Outokumpu copper factory to the specifications shown in Table I. The paper is divided into five parts. The first deals with the theory of the measurement. In the second, experimental procedures are described. Results are presented in the third part. Both cold-rolled and re-crystallized samples are studied. Discussion is in the fourth part, and finally in the fifth part some conclusions are drawn. 1) THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS Properties peculiar to neutron diffraction are the following: a) the scattering length varies greatly between one element and another; b) many of the elements do not absorb neutrons appreciably. In this connection it is of primary interest to know the interaction of neutrons with lattice imperfections. As with X-rays this problem leads to diffraction analysis of deformed and recrystallized metals. From the physical point of view the main difference is that neutrons are scattered by nuclei (magnetic scattering is not considered here), whereas X-rays are scattered by electrons. The features peculiar to neutron and X-ray diffraction methods in texture studies are listed in Table 11. Pole figures are an important tool in performing structural analysis of deformed or recrystallized metal. Present texture research technology requires pole figures which are as precise as possible. The choice between these two methods depends on the technical information which is required. The X-ray diffraction transmission technique may give results which are not necessarily representative of the average physical state of the sample. Although foil samples normally contain enough crystallites for diffraction, they may not necessarily represent the whole structure. An example of this problem is the frequently observed difference between the "surface" and the "inside" texture of a sample. The production of foil samples may disturb the original structure of the parent material. The selection and orientation of the foil from the sample is quite arbitrary. This final report summarizes the work done by The Bendix Corporation, Environmental Science Division, under contract to the Bureau of Mines to design, develop and test two improved systems for remote sampling the air at the working face of a coal mine in conjunction with approved portable methane detectors and machine-mounted methane monitors respectively. The work was started in May 1973 with preliminary design studies and was completed in May 1975. Five portable and two machine-mounted sampling systems were delivered. Contract "add-on" requirements for (1) modification of the machine-mounted system to accommodate a flame safety lamp and (2) a study of sensor response time improvement for the machine-mounted system were also completed.

Waste dumps are widely used to discharge stripped mine wastes in open pit mining methods. As mining progresses, the height of the waste dumps will increase gradually, which may induce sliding failure once the height exceeds a critical value. Therefore, estimation of the maximum dumping height is crucial to the life-cycle use of a waste dump. However, published information about the maximum height of mine waste dumps are extremely rare. In this study, the maximum dumping height is estimated based on the strength-reduction technique by numerical simulations. The influences of dump geometry and properties on the maximum height are investigated. The results show that the maximum dump height decreases as the dump slope inclination angle α or the unit weight of dump materials γ increases, but decreases when the shear parameters of dump materials (cohesion c and internal friction angle ϕ) increase. The maximum height starts to increase with the ground inclination β when shear failure occurs at the interface between the dump and the base. Furthermore the effects of the dump width B, Young’s modulus E, and Poisson’s ratio μ of dump materials on the maximum height are almost insignificant. Good agreement was found between numerical results available in the literature and those obtained in this study.

Recent trends in blasting engineering and its related fields, at the level of professional academia, have tended to exclude detailed discussion and examination of the formative experiences of the engineering student. In particular, the extra-curricular aspects of the undergraduate program in engineering—focused, in this case, on the summer job—will be shown to contain a wealth of heretofore underappreciated knowledge in the field. In Surveying the Damage: Post Traumatic Stress and Pre-Blast Surveys, I intend to outline and examine some of the more unusual experiences afforded me by my work as a preblast surveyor in the summer of 2007. In this capacity, I was required to make a visual note of existing conditions of surrounding residential and commercial structures within 100 m (328 ft) of two separate blasting sites in central-east Ontario. In the interest of both convenience and specificity, I have attempted to organize the paper as a crossdiscipline survey of the field according to the conference’s list of suggested topics. In the paper’s first section, I will discuss the topic of Environmental Improvement and Remediation by using a case study in which not one, but two dead cats were found during the course of a routine pre-blast survey. The second section will undertake a discussion of on-site blaster gossip as an entry point into a wider discussion of Workplace Communications Management. In the paper’s final section, I will detail an early morning encounter with a 300 lb, stark-naked trailer park inhabitant as a cross-sectional analysis of the topics of Drilling in Hostile Environments, Vibration and Seismology (Sizemology?), Ethics in Blasting, Crisis Management, Risk Assessment and Public Relations. It is my hope that this paper will begin to open up a critical space for discussion of the formative experiences of engineering students during the undergraduate university program in terms of their far-reaching effects on later performance within the industry.

Loading and hauling of ore and waste are the key operations of an opencast coal mine and entail a high operational cost. The productivity of a mine can be increased by reducing the cycle time of loading equipment as well as utilizing dumpers optimally. In this paper we discuss the impact of rock type, bucket fill factor, rock fragmentation, the height of the cut, and angle of swing of the bucket on shovel performance. A time study is conducted on shovels in an opencast coal mine with experimental blasts of rocks to assess the impact of different factors on the performance of the shovel. Based on the data, the authors applied multiple regression (MR) and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques to develop different models for the prediction of the shovel cycle time. Developed models are validated by comparing the predicted data with actual field data. With the help of the best model, the plausible fleet size is determined in order to utilize the shovel and dumper optimally and to improve the performance of shovel–dumper operation.

"At Department of Ferrous Metallurgy of the RWTH Aachen University in Germany steels in the system Fe-Mn-C(-Al) are investigated and produced in the framework of the SFB 761 ""steel-ab initio"". A new world of steel grades leads to special challenges regarding the production and recycling at the end-of-life cycle of product. In order to recycle high manganese steel alloys the EAF has to be chosen preferentially. A good slag practice is necessary avoiding loss of manganese content during melting in the EAF. This paper investigates on the reaction kinetics at the interface of slag and steel containing Mn (17-22 wt.-%) and up to 3 wt.-% Al. The effect of changes in the composition of slag and steel on the interfacial reaction kinetics is studied. The thermodynamic software FactSage™ is utilized to calculate the composition of slag and steel at equilibrium.IntroductionTRIP and TWIP steels are highly alloyed steels which show superior strength and ductility when compared to standard carbon steel and stainless steel alloys. These TRIP- and TWIPsteel grades contain typically 15-30 wt.-% manganese, 0-4 wt.-% silicon and aluminum, and up to 1 wt.-% carbon. Steels containing 18-28 wt.-% manganese and 0.7-1.2 wt.-% carbon together with aluminum addition from 3 to 12 wt. -% and without silicon refer to TRIPLEX high manganese steel alloys. These alloys combine high strength at even large ductility [ 1-4]. At the Department of Ferrous Metallurgy (IEHK) of the RWTH Aachen University in Germany, steels in the system Fe-Mn-C(-Al) is under investigation at the collaborative research center, SFB 761 ""Steel-ab initio"". In this project, high manganese alloyed TRIP and TWIP steels are in the focus.The mechanical properties such as high strength and high ductility make this kind of steels perfect candidates for impact absorption applications in auto body such as vehicle doors and bumpers [2, 5]. With increasing the use of TRIP-, TWIP- and TRIPLEX-steels more high manganese steel scraps will be available at the end of life cycle of products, which need to develop the technologies and metallurgical processes to recovery of high manganese steel. A new steel grade brings new challenges in recycling. In order to recycle high manganese steel scraps the electric arc furnaces (EAF) have to be chosen preferentially [1]. Nevertheless it's not easy to prevent the manganese loss during the process in EAF. During the oxygen refining of high manganese molten steel in EAF the manganese content decreases strongly by oxidation and vaporization, which is affected by slag composition, slag properties such as basicity and viscosity, slag weight as well as melt temperature [6-8]."

The Bureau of Mines studied factors affecting ignition of coal mine refuse and on methods for control of burning. Laboratory experiments showed that air permeates more readily through segregated than through nonsegregated refuse and that air permeability is greater through coarse than through fine particle refuse. Minus 3-1/4-inch refuse ignites spontaneously more readily than minus 1/4-inch refuse. The burning of a 1,000-pound conical coal pile was con-trolled by capping with an 18-inch-thick layer of minus 1/4-inch refuse containing 37 percent combustible. In field trials, the burning of refuse at operating mines was controlled by capping with a layer of fine refuse. Water, applied as a spray or by injection, quenched surface flames and cooled the burning waste. Inspection of refuse piles at operating mines showed that the spontaneous ignition tendency is affected by the exposed surface relative to the total volume and the segregation of particles during dumping.

The dissolution behaviour of ilmenite in acid solutions has been studied by many researchers to improve the leaching efficiency. Most studies which utilized natural ilmenite from different origins resulted in different reactivity due to the alteration caused by the weathering process. Previous researchers have suggested that the greater reactivity shown by some ilmenite samples towards sulphuric acid may be a result of the mineral being relatively unaltered. In the present study a rotating synthetic ilmenite disc of 2.2 cm diameter was subjected to leaching studies in hydrochloric acid. The dissolution rates of iron and titanium from synthetic ilmenite were determined in hydrochloric acid solutions (4 M to 9 M) over a temperature range of 50 to 80°C. Results show that the rate of dissolution of both iron and titanium increased with the increase in acid concentration. However, the rates decreased with time and obeyed a parabolic rate law indicating the blockage of the surface by an insoluble product. The rates of dissolution of both iron and titanium were higher in the presence of SnCl2 and remained unaffected with time indicating the reductive role of SnCl2 which inhibits the formation of surface blocking solids. Application to natural ilmenite is also discussed.

The low-rank coals containing 10 to 50 pet natural bed moisture represent over half of the tonnage reserve of the available solid fuels of the United States, but only about 2 pet of United States coal production is derived from these fuels. Increased utilization of these large reserves will result if the bed moisture can be removed at the mine in high-speed low-cost processes. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of the factors affecting high-speed drying of coal dusts. The time required to heat particles of coal is proportional to the square of their diameter, and it is calculated that the probable time in minutes is equal to 6D2. In other words, a 11 a in. coal particle should be heated to drying temperature in 1.5 to 2.0 sec. Likewise, 1/8 in. particles should be heated in about 6 sec. The net heat required to dry subbituminous coal and lignite varies from 240 to 375 Btu per pound, depending upon the moisture removed, and this heat can be obtained from 42 to 61 cu ft of hot gases at 600°F.

In 1980, the Bureau of Mines surveyed a group of mine seals in Randolph County, WV, to evaluate their effectiveness for reducing toxic pollutants in mine water discharges. The survey focused on 11 block wet mine seals, but mine seals of several other types were also examined. The seals were installed in 1966 and 1967 in abandoned drift portals by the Federal Water Quality Administration (FWQA), a predecessor of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines and other Federal and State agencies, in a project known as Elkins Mine Drainage Pollution Control Demonstration Project. The seals were designed to prevent air from entering the mine portals while allowing mine water to flow out. It was believed that by preventing air from entering inactive or abandoned mines, the formation of toxic pollutants and acid mine drainage (AMD) could be reduced. Evaluation of the seals was based on water flow measurements, water analyses, and visual observations. The Bureau's 1980 data were compared with past data collected by the EPA. Several leaks and failures were observed in the clay seals, as evidenced by apparent blowouts and the absence of vegetation where the mine water surfaced. Analyses of the 1980 data indicated some improvement in the quality of water discharged from many of the wet air seals.

To finalize the three years granted for the study of miners physiological responses to emergency situations, all the data obtained, were summarized into the following relevant sections; A.. Information on elements of the Man Test required under Subpart 4, Part 2, Title 30 in the Code of Federal Regulation (see Table M-T and Ref. I., Section A). B. Investigation on possible emergency activities, its simulation in the laboratory and the physiologic data obtained on miners performing them This included some studies under cool ambient conditions, expected to prevail in coal mines. C. While in section B the steady state responses have been obtained, time was devoted to establish a unit that will allow data gathering for non-steady state, i.e., transient responses to rapidly changing activities. Section B and C contained elements that were relevant to section A; the Man Test. Therefore some of the information described under section A Man Test, were actually measured during the battery of tests in either section B or in section C.

"The rate of progress in the last three years in the development of differential flotation has been rapid beyond the realization of most people. Differential flotation is no longer a ""delicate"" and unreliable process, but is now in wide use. Its ""safety"" is due to the wide use of chemicals which either depress or enhance floatability by definite modification of surfaces.The extent of the development and reliability of differential flotation methods any be emphasized by pointing out that there are now several customall-flotation"" plants in this country treating complex lead-zinc-iron ores from widely separated mines. While these ores differ in chemical composition and apparently in physical nature, the various ores treated in such a plant are passed through the same crushing and grinding equipment and through the same flotation machines and flow sheet with only slight changes, if any, in quantity and kind of chemicals and oils added.Some of the development in differential flotation is due to intelligent research on the part of well-trained chemists and metallurgists; much of It must be attributed to empirical testing.Much of the success in differential flotation is due to more care being given to constant conditions with regard to such factors as (1) fineness of grinding, (2) density of pulp entering flotation machines, (3) quantity and constancy of oils and chemicals added to the pulp, and (4) place of addition of reagents, and time of ""conditioning"" treatment of pulp with reagents."

The paper gives a comprehensive overview of the historical development of various metal rolling technologies and also describes the influence to industrial and socio-economic developments. The rolling of steel, in particular of rails, beams, rebar, strip and plate has enabled the large scale transport and travel, the building of bridges and buildings, the manufacturing of ships and cars. All this has changed the face of the world significantly. Further the paper approaches technological highlights in the design, manufacturing, drive and control of modern mills and the various types developed to create industrial economic units for the different markets and customers’ requirements. An outlook of future challenges is as well discussed in the paper. Various solution approaches for the rolling technologies, from continuous improvement of existing plants to more radical new concepts like endless rolling, near net-shape casting and rolling are approached. A positive conclusion is drawn that rolling technologies will remain a valuable area for engineers with scientific and economic challenges, but also a clear vision for positive contribution to further industrial and social development.

Electrochemical processes occur on nano-, micro- and macro- scale in numerous applications such as fuel cells, batteries, hydrogen production, mineral extraction, water treatment, electrotherapy, sensors and many others. In most of these applications, gases evolve either at one or both electrodes due to electrolysis. These gases form bubbles play a crucial role in electrochemical systems. For example, in electrowinning (EW) that is used to extract and refine metals such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, and Cd from their solutions, in most cases the solution is acidic and oxidation of water molecules at the anode is the common counter reaction, which results in the liberation of oxygen bubbles. This generally requires a high overpotential and accounts for a considerable percentage of the energy consumed in metal EW electrolytic cells, apart from producing acid mist that is very corrosive for other cell equipment and building structures. The behaviour of bubbles in electrochemical systems is still a complex challenging topic which requires a better understanding of gas bubbles hydrodynamics and their interactions with electrode surface and bulk liquid, as well as between the bubbles themselves. The objective of the current paper is to briefly review the fundamental hydrodynamics of both gas bubbles on the electrode surface and gas bubbles interaction with the liquid bulk solution. The current work also investigates the impact of gas bubbling and some operating parameters in copper EW, such as current density (100-500 A/m2), temperature (25-75ºC), acidity (50-300 g/L) and a typical chemical mist suppressant (<50 ppm). The results clearly show that both suppressant and temperature reduced the overall surface tension of the solution. Also, chloride concentration and applied current improved electrolyte flow and copper quality at higher current densities. The current paper contributes to the development of mineral processing (specifically to copper hydrometallurgy), as it deals with fundamental hydrodynamics and interactions of gas bubbles that formed during copper EW and play a crucial role in copper electrochemical systems.

The Rex mine is one of several zinc deposits in Ozark and Howell Counties, Mo. It is the second of these deposits investigated by the Bureau of Mines in an effort to demonstrate reserves of sulfide ore underlying the shallow carbonate ores from which the district&apos;s major production has come. The initial investigation was made during 1945-46 on the Alice mine, Ozark County, Mo.21 The investigation reported herein was conducted during 1947. The Rex open pit is about 250 feet long, 100 feet wide, and about 25 feet deep (average). Three caved shafts are evident in the bottom of the pit, but the extent of the workings from these shafts is not known. The Bureau of Mines drilled five churn-drill holes in and around the Rex pit to test the grade and the vertical and lateral extent of the deposit. Two of the holes indicate notable zinc mineralization ranging from less than 1 to more than 10 percent metallic zinc, but largely in the oxidized condition.

Sublimation of ZrCl4 is important for the production of nuclear grade metallic Zr in Kroll’s process. The sublimation kinetics of ZrCl4 was investigated by TGA under both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The sublimation rate of ZrCl4 increased with increasing temperature under isothermal conditions. ZrCl4 sublimation was confirmed to be a zero-order process under isothermal conditions, whereas it was first-order kinetics under non-isothermal conditions. The activation energy of ZrCl4 sublimation under isothermal conditions was 21.7 kJ/mol. The activation energy for non-isothermal sublimation was 101.4 kJ/mol and 108.1 kJ/mol with the Kissinger method and Flynn- Wall-Ozawa method, respectively. These non-isothermal activation energies were very close to the heat of sublimation (103.3 kJ/mol). Sublimation occurs by two elementary steps: surface reaction and desorption. Therefore, the overall activation energy of ZrCl4 sublimation is 104.8(±3.4) kJ/mol. The activation energy of the surface reaction and desorption steps are proposed to be 83.1 kJ/mol and 21.7 kJ/mol, respectively.

"The ore deposit mined by Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is one of the numerous nickel-copper sulphide bodies marginal to the large oystershaped mass of differentiated norite in the Sudbury district, famous as the world's most important nickel producing field. The unique character of the ore deposits of the district has resulted in its intensive geological study over a period of more than 50 years. The results of these studies have given rise to a voluminous geological literature and to a great deal of controversy as to the genesis of the ores. This description of the structural geology at the Falconbridge mine is presented in the hope that it may form a small part of the chain of evidence leading to a reasonably satisfactory explanation of the ore genesis.The mine, named after Falconbridge township in which the deposit occurs, lies along the southeast margin of the norite mass, which, however, is h::re concealed beneath a deep mantle of glacial sands and gravels averaging over 100 feet in thickness. As a consequence, the deposit was not discovered by the early prospectors, and it was not until 1916-17 that E. J. Longyear, of Minneapolis, located the ore by drilling(ll). The discovery was foreshadowed in 1899 by the work of Thomas A. Edison, who found indications of the deposit by what is believed to have been a combination of magnetic and electrical geophysical surveys. He sank a prospect shaft over what has to date proved to be the largest and richest ore section in the mine. A wet quicksand layer at the rock surface proved impenetrable, however, and the 'Edison' shaft never reached bed-rock.The Falconbridge property was acquired by the Lindsley interests in 1928, and ore output, since its inception in 1929, has gradually risen from a modest beginning to the present 2,000 tons and more daily. Total production in this period is 7,500,000 tons of ore averaging 1.72 per cent nickel and 0.89 per cent copper, together with a small but valuable content of precious metals, principally of the platinum group."

We start by highlighting the need for the assessment tool and then progress towards explaining the methodology followed during the study. The selection and finalization of the list of elements, sections, and categories that make up the unweighted values are described, followed by a summary of the weighting process applied. The outcome of this process is a weighted readiness assessment tool for mining project studies. The main benefits of the tool are that it will guide decision-makers and project managers through the definition phases of the project and improve the likelihood of project success.

IT IS APPROPRIATE that your Institute should have chosen, for its 1956 Annual General Meeting, the Capital City of a province which is making such rapid advances in mining. The railway industry is proud to be playing an active role in this development, expenditures on equipment and railway construction in the Province of Quebec alone in recent years being in ?excess of a quarter of a billion dollars. In looking up some background material for this address I ran across a definition of a mine by Mark Twain, the great American humorist, which I thought might amuse you. He said that a mine was "a hole in the ground owned by a liar". I am sure that if he were alive to witness the enormous value attached to Canada&apos;s mineral resources today he would quickly change his definition. Canada&apos;s postwar record of mining development has been staggering in its variety and enormity. Historically, only the ?construction of our transcontinental rail ways outranks the largest of three of these development projects - the aluminum undertaking at Kitimat; the Quebec-Labrador iron ore deposits ; and the petroleum and natural gas developments in Wes tern Canada.
