The theory of sampling (TOS), and therefore representative sampling, is based on three fundamental principles: sample correctness, which handles the search for non-bias; segregation, the effects of which must be eliminated or minimised; and variance control to help achieve the desired reproducibility. After briefly reviewing these very few, albeit essential first principles of Gy’s TOS, the state-of-the-art in TOS is examined through the prism of these principles and the prospects for the future are explored, with suggestions for further research where relevant. Regarding segregation, which is currently the focus of much research, new orientations are proposed. For correctness, which takes on a major importance when it comes to sampling devices, some new, important principles that have been put forth by recent research, are described in details.CITATION:François-Bongarçon, D, 2014. "INTRODUCTION Deposits of iron ore in Cherokee County, Tex., have been worked at various times in the pact, and the ore has been smelted in small local blast furnaces.Recently it was proposed to establish a charcoal blast furnace with a wood distillation plant to produce charcoal for fuel and byproducts. Financial assistance from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation was sought by George Easley and associates to enable them to purchase, move, and erect the furnace and build the required accessory plants. The furnace was to be moved from Pembroke, Fla.In August 1941, the Bureau of Mines was asked by the Office of Production Management to check the development work of Easley and associates and to ascertain (1) the iron-ore reserves, (2) the cost of mining ore and delivering it to the blast furnace, and (3) the grade and character of the ore. The Bureau of Mines was advised, while the investigation was in progress, that approximately 1,000,000 long tons of measured reserves would be sufficient to demonstrate the feasibility of operating the properties.Although deposits of iron ore are widely distributed in Cherokee County, only the Pryor Mountain, Banks and Cherokee, J. P. Acker, and Citizens State Bank tracts were sampled thoroughly by the Bureau of Mines. The iron-ore rights on these are owned by the New Birmingham Development Co., the Cherokee Development Co., or by individuals. Options to lease the ore rights were obtained by Easley, who obtained options on the Hawes Peach Orchard and Bradford tracts, also, which were examined only cursorily by the Bureau."

A prática de escória espumante ganhou o mundo dos fornos elétricos a arco por apresentar muitas vantagens, dentre elas a redução das perdas térmicas do arco elétrico para o ambiente, reduzindo o consumo de energia elétrica e também permitindo uma maior recuperação do metal perdido em forma de FeO para a escória através da reversão feita com a injeção de C. No entanto, a eficiência das escórias espumantes produzidas atualmente ainda é tema de estudo para aqueles que querem melhorar a eficiência do processo, a vida do equipamento e reduzir custos de elaboração. Assim, esse trabalho tem como objetivo otimizar as propriedades da escória através do ajuste da saturação em MgO, melhorando a eficiência da escória espumante e reduzindo a perda de Fe sob a forma de FeO. O resultado das alterações realizadas foram ganho de energia elétrica medido e redução da perda de rendimento metálico do FEA, obtida comparando o peso produzido e o esperado pela carga metálica.

The development of transportation systems for mined materials has historically been characterized by steadily increasing sizes in basic hauling units. This is especially true for open pit mines for which success is dependent upon the economical transportation of vast quantities of material. The depletion of high grade ore reserves has mandated a tremendous increase in the size and complexity of the ore haulage systems necessary for open pit mines, These increased demands were served by rail haulage systems in the early large open pit copper mines while later developed properties opted for the flexibility and lower initial costs of truck haulage. Now, we find the trucks being displaced as large overland belt conveyors tackle the problem of handling these ever larger quantities of low-grade ores with accompanying overburden ratios that can run as high as 10:1 or even 15:1. The basic development of large conveyors with shiftable sections and modular belts has generally taken place overseas, during the last few decades. The coal fields of central Europe proved an ideal testing ground for conveyor innovation because the low density and natural friability of the material created an ideal medium for transporting by belt conveyor. Now these proven ideas are being considered for and implemented into both the soft and hard rock mining industries of the United States.

Iron ores associated with the Oriskany formation extend from the West Virginia border to the southwestern corner of Virginia. The deposits have been mined at many places, and the district is credited with the production of approximately 13,000,000 tons of ore to 1925, when mining operations ceased (fig. 1). The Oriskany iron-ore deposits occur in the Alleghany Mountains throughout their extent in the State. The name Oriskany was originally given to the limonite ore that was supposed to occur in the Oriskany sand-stone. At present, the name applies to all iron-ore deposits occurring in the lower part of the Devonian shale, Oriskany sandstone, and Helderberg limestone. The principal ore-bearing minerals are goethite and limonite. This report deals principally with the occurrences in Allegheny, Bath, Botetourt, and Craig Counties, Va. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project to develop the reserves of the area in November 1943; and continued until December 1944. Work started near Oriskany and extended northeast for nearly three-fourths of the area of the more important deposits. During the program 163 holes were drilled, totaling 11,651 feet; 256 feet of prospect tunnels were driven; 1,346 samples were collected; beneficiation tests were performed; and bulldozer trails and trenches wore excavated. The work served to delimit and appreciably extend the reserves of several areas. Analyses of channel samples are -given in appendix A, and diamond-drill and churn-drill hole logs and sample analyses are given in appendixes B and C, respectively.

During an intense and accurate study of initiation systems used on an AngloGold mine, Mine A, poor drilling practices were revealed. Graphic results of all actual measurements taken are shown below. [ ] Accurate drilling of shot holes will determine whether a mining operation is payable or not and at what pay limit mining can take place. Losing 30 cm of a potential 120 cm-hole length will result in a number of consequences, i.e.: ?Higher stoping costs ?Drilling of one shot hole twice in every five shifts ?Increased explosive cost as a result ?Excess stress on hangingwall and footwall due to bad face shape ?Excessive blast damage before the area is worked out. No wonder we have such a high-risk operation. Drilling accuracy is crucial to the profitability on any mine as profits are directly related to the quality and utilization of the drilled shot holes.

In today?s high tech world, systems are getting bigger, faster, better. To remain at the leading edge, in any business, depends on accurate but flexible design thereby allowing operational managers to provide alternatives to improve their operations. The ultimate goal is to deliver to plan, with optimum economics. Mining is no different, with falling prices and escalating costs, improved margins become the focal objective. There are many ways to achieve this, ranging from operational efficiency improvements through production scenarios to planning initiatives. Of all, planning usually receives the least attention, yet it is the area of most influence on the NPV of the reserve. With computer technology, numerous concepts and iterations are possible thereby closing the gap between optimal and actual design. This paper discusses the application of the split shell design at the De Beers Venetia open pit in South Africa.

There is significant value at stake in the mining industry from the implementation of new technologies that support the enhanced profitability and sustainability of mines. However, in order to realise this value, new technology must be implemented in a way that is both effective and sustainable. The industry has a mixed history for technology implementation that provides fertile ground for understanding what is necessary for innovation to deliver value. This paper describes early stage research investigating why this is so, with the aim of improving how to deliver value. Several case studies are provided covering both successful and unsuccessful technology interventions. This volume constitutes the final report for the Rescue Subsystem portion of the Coal Mine Rescue and Survival System program conducted by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation under contract to the United States Bureau of Mines (Contract Number H0101262 dated Jung 17, 1970). The program was directed by the Special Systems Department of the Westinghouse, Baltimore, Maryland facility. The basic objectives of the CMRSS program were to develop and test hardware to determine the efficacy of a variety of coal mine rescue and survival concepts and techniques. These concepts were drawn from two major- sources: the Request for Proposal from the Bureau of Mines and the final report on the Mine Rescue and Survival Study conducted by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

The primary objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazard of elastomeric noise abatement materials with a limited effort expended on the evaluation of specific treatments applied to mine timbers. Under the conditions employed, for a dimethyl silicone rubber, formaldehyde presented the major toxic threat; acrolein was the main toxic species for both polyester and polyether urethanes and an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin; in the case of flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubber compositions, hydrogen chloride, and in the case of PFA-treated timber, furfural, were the major toxic compounds. Of the materials studied, the flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubbers presented the greatest toxic hazard. The generated data have been reduced to toxic load tabulations amenable to employment for potential hazard assessment.

"Construction of the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan is well under way. Production is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2007. When in full production, the mine is projected to produce a net 18,000,000 pounds of U3O8 per annum from a high grade ore averaging approximately 20% U3O8.Water management was a major issue that required substantial effort in the Cigar Lake design. Not only is effluent quality controlled, a tight water balance to minimize effluent volume is also designed into processes in order to minimize environmental impact. This paper focuses on the water treatment process and water handling equipment, as well as the operating philosophies that will reduce fresh water consumption to a minimum. An overview of the mining and ore handling systems, as well as aspects of controlling water production from the ore formation and the mine development areas will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Cigar Lake ore body has proven and probable reserves that total 232 million pounds U3O8. Cigar Lake is the world’s largest undeveloped high-grade deposit. It is the second largest highgrade deposit surpassed only by the McArthur River deposit another Cameco - operated mine in the Saskatchewan Athabasca Basin. Cigar Lake is owned 50% by Cameco Corporation, 37% by AREVA (COGEMA Resources Inc.), 8% by Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. and 5% by TEPCO Resources Inc. When production starts in 2007, ground ore slurry from Cigar Lake will be shipped to the McClean Lake mill (owned by AREVA) some 80 km away. All of the Cigar Lake uranium will be leached from the ore at McClean Lake. During initial production ramp up, all uranium will be processed at McClean Lake to yellow cake (uranium oxide). After the average production has exceeded a 10 million pound per year rate, Cigar Lake uranium will begin to flow from the McClean Lake Mill to the Rabbit Lake Mill. At this point, subject to regulatory approval, 57% of the Cigar Lake uranium, in a uranium rich solution, will be transported to Rabbit Lake mill (owned by Cameco) for purification to yellow cake. A complete summary of the flow of uranium from the Cigar Lake ore body through to product at both McClean Lake and Rabbit Lake can be found in a recent paper titled “The Cigar Lake Project – Mining, Ore Handling and Milling” in the March 2004 issue of the CIM Bulletin. Horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to roof failure during longwall entry development, especially when the immediate roof is weak. In this paper, the effects of stress angle between the maximum horizontal stress and entry development and stress ratio of the maximum to minimum horizontal stresses on the stress distributions in the weak immediate roof of a three-entry system are analyzed using the finite element method. The results have confirmed that stress angle has a significant influence on the stress distributions. Generally, the three-entry system is in the worst stress condition when the stress angle is about 60° to 75° . The stress ratio has also some effects on the roof stresses.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the recovery of cell-grade alu-mina by RCI leaching of calcined kaolin in the alumina miniplant at its Boulder City (NV) Engineering Laboratory. Classification and thickening were used for separating aluminum chloride leach liquor from the siliceous residue generated in the acid leaching step of the clay-HCI process. Coarse solids were classified from fines at 115 mesh and countercurrently washed in three additional spiral classifiers. Fines were treated in a conventional five-thickener, countercurrent decantation circuit. When this method was applied to the solids-liquid separation of slurry from RCI leaching of minus lO-mesh calcined kaolin, 75 pct of the residue reported as classifier sands and 25 pct as thickener underflow. Predicted individual classifier and thickener area requirements were 6 and 25 ft2/tpd, respectively. Total thickener circuit flocculant requirement was 2.4 lb/ton solids. Aluminum chloride pregnant liquor was produced that analyzed 8.4 pct A1203 and contained more than 97 pct of the alumina in the liquid phase of the slurry. Bench-scale settling tests were used to correlate fines content of leach residue to thickener area and flocculant requirements.

The results of a series of physical model studies of the stability of jointed rock slopes carried out some years ago are described. These models were tested under centrifugal loading. Four ?geological? structures were tested; all had the same joint orientations and strengths, but the relative spacing of the joints was different. The results showed that the mechanisms of failure of the slopes varied for the different models, and the gravitational loads at which failure developed also varied. The following conclusions are drawn from the results of the physical model tests: ?the mechanism of slope failure is by progressive deformations throughout the slope ?the ratio of the spacings between the different sets of discontinuities exerts considerable influence on the slope failure ?in the models tested, the intact material strength had no noticeable influence on the stability of the jointed rock slopes(note that for hard rock, similitude conditions indicate a prototype slope height of 300 to 400 m, and therefore intact rock failure might not be expected under simple gravity conditions, i.e. no tectonic stresses) ?rock slope failures are three-dimensional and in general are not amenable to two-dimensional simplification ?knowledge of the orientations of discontinuities in the slopes does not allow prediction of a unique failure surface, nor of a volume of failure. The volume of failure is determined to a large extent by the plan configuration of the slope.

Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. This is especially true in surface and underground coal and stone mining where large, noisy equipment predominate. Workers in coal preparation and stone processing plants have also been found to be subject to high sound levels that could potentially cause NIHL over prolonged periods of exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by river dredging. Little is known about the noise environment and worker exposures in these environments, where processing and mining equipment similar to coal and stone are employed. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to identify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges, in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. The locations where workers are likely to be overexposed and were found to be most susceptible to noise overexposures are reported. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps, and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are present. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) TWA8, laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers, and greasers are the workers likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and thus develop NIHL over time. Knowledge of the equipment noise, area sound levels, and worker dose levels is information that management and employees can use to reduce exposures. Exposures can be reduced in certain areas through administrative controls and through engineering controls applied to the noisiest equipment.

"Laboratory testing, plant optimization, and the interpretation and application of metallurgical technologies can be tedious, time consuming and costly. This paper outlines the use of proven statistical design of experimentation software for rapid laboratory testing and optimization of operating plants with limited representative sample utilization. This results in less costly required testing, a more thorough understanding of results and the ability to simultaneously optimize several variables and outcomes at once. At the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP), this testing methodology has been used successfully in many metallurgical development and plant optimization projects thereby confirming its real world utility and application. Accordingly, several applied examples in flotation and hydrometallurgy will be outlined in this paper. This will include flotation testing of a copper gold ore, flotation testing of a copper, cobalt and gold ore, optimization of an industrial hydrometallurgical jarosite circuit and optimization of industrial nitrogen species catalyzed pressure leaching of a copper enargite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONWhile flotation technology is now 100 years old, the testing, interpretation and application of lab results can be tedious, costly and time consuming requiring extensive sample collection and preparation. In addition, recent applications like hydrometallurgical pressure leaching and associated unit operations, such as precipitation, still remain more of an art than a quantifiable science. This paper will elucidate the application of STAT-EASE Design-Expert software to minimize required laboratory testing while rapidly optimizing multiple results and outcomes in a statistically valid manner. The STAT-EASE program is based on proven design of experiment fundamentals. In this paper, the real world application of this methodology for lab testing, plant optimization and process development will be elucidated."

The practice of roof bolting, now recognized as an effective method of support, is based largely on rule of thumb. Among the various applications of bolting, the support of stratified mine roof is by far the most common. The general principles relating to this type of reinforcement are presented in two companion reports; the first describes the function of the bolts, the bolting pattern, and the behavior of bolted roof (1), 2/ and the second describes the design of the models and the theory of the experimental method (2). This report presents a rational method for designing systems of vertical bolts to reinforce horizontally bedded mine roof, developed from model tests. The structure treated herein may be described as follows: The immediate roof, consisting of beds of like material and equal thickness with no bond between them, is reinforced by vertical bolts installed in straight lines across the opening; the case of suspension is excluded because the bolts are assumed not to extend above the immediate roof. The assumption is made that the behavior of the lowest bed approximates that of a rectangular plate clamped along two opposite sides (the ribs). These specifications represent approximately the roof conditions encountered in mining bedded deposits of all kinds - coal, potash, iron ore, etc. Thus, for the design of a roof-bolting system a quantitative solution to the following problem is required: For a roof composed of beds of given thickness and physical properties, how does the support depend upon the length, spacing, and tightness of the bolts?

Although secondary-recovery methods have not been applied widely in California, it is apparent that increasing attention and effort must be given to this phase of recovery if the State is to maintain its high rank as a petroleum producer. Steadily increasing demands for petroleum products and decreasing rates of discovery of new oil fields and rapid depletion of existing reserves emphasize the prospect of an adverse situation of supply and demand in the not-far-distant future. If the trend of discoveries becomes more favorable or if more complete economic recovery of the oil in place can be obtained by secondary recovery, this situation can be averted. Not only are these reserves of economic importance to the petroleum industry to meet increasing market demands, but economic reclamation of such reserves is an important conservation measure, which will prolong the productive life of many fields" Accordingly, progressive operators in California are alert to the possibilities of secondary recovery and have done much to implement such operations wherever feasible. Most of the operations are of the pressure-maintenance type} in which the reservoir pressure is maintained or partly maintained by injecting natural gas to increase oil recovery. The possibilities of recovering additional oil from stripper fields by gas drive and water flooding (including water disposal) also are being tested in experimental field projects. Table 1 summarizes gas and water-injection projects in California.

O efeito de memória de forma tem como principal objetivo a recuperação da forma por meio de aquecimento acima das temperaturas críticas de transformação. Fitas da liga Ti43,5Cu37,8Ni18,7 foram preparadas através do processo melt spinnig com velocidade da roda de 21 m/s e 63 m/s. As fitas foram tratadas termicamente numa temperatura de 700°C por 15 minutos em forno e resfriadas ao ar. A caracterização das fitas foi feita por calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC) e análise por difração de raios X (DRX). Foi observado que com uma menor velocidade de rotação da roda (21 m/s) a fita apresentou-se totalmente cristalina, e quando aumentou-se a velocidade linear da roda para 63 m/s a fita apresentou-se completamente amorfa. Após o tratamento térmico todas as fitas apresentaram as transformações martensíticas e auteníticas. Observou-se que a velocidade da roda tem grande influência nas temperaturas de transformação, chegando à variação de aproximadamente 7°C. O tratamento térmico remove todos os defeitos produzidos pelo processo de solidificação rápida e produz um rápido crescimento de grão, favorecendo ao aumento das temperaturas de transformação.
