The potential usefulnuss of reclaimed surface-mined land has received much attention in recent times. This attention is partially due to the establishment of federal environmental reclamation standards but concern for achieving better land uses has also been shown by interested members of the mining industry. In an effort to develop a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials, specific mines in various regions of the U. S. were studied to determine the extent of current mined-land planning and to discover characteristics that are regional in nature. As part of this investigation, a 430-acre surface mine in Clear-field County, Pennsylvania has been studied. Established site planning principles have been applied to the case study site including formation of a data base, development of alternate land use plans, and evaluation of the economic, environmental, and social impacts of the land use alternatives. Key factors affecting site realization have been identified along with positive suggestions for applying land use planning processes to mined-land planning.

Plant survey data has shown that gold recovery through a specific copper concentrator was significantly lower than copper recovery. Size-by-size analysis revealed that this was due to poor recovery of+75 µm and ?23 µm gold containing particles. In order to further investigate the nature of the gold losses, experiments were conducted at laboratory scale. Gold deportment studies on the laboratory flotation products revealed that coarse gold (+75 µm) reporting to the rougher tailing was predominantly associated with non-sulphide gangue. Further grinding of the plant rougher tailing improved recovery of gold and copper, while not affecting iron recovery, due to improved liberation of gold from non-sulphide gangue in coarse size fractions. EDTA extraction to remove surface contaminants showed a similar improvement for fine, liberated gold flotation.

O objetivo deste estudo é recuperar parte do alumínio empregado na fabricação das embalagens de medicamentos do tipo “blister”, por tratamento químico e térmico seguido de separação gravimétrica, resultando na obtenção de alumínio na forma de óxido (Al2O3). A caracterização do produto particulado metálico obtido constitui-se em um caminho para se chegar ao patamar de existência de coleta seletiva após seu descarte, diminuição deste tipo de embalagens nos aterros sanitários e/ou incineradores de lixo doméstico e posterior reaproveitamento com amplos benefícios ambientais. A caracterização morfológica do óxido de alumínio obtido foi realizada utilizando as técnicas instrumentais de ICP/AES e MEV/EDS.

O aço 27MnCrB5-2 tem sido muito utilizado para aplicação em facas, além de peças de boa resistência mecânica e resistência ao desgaste, alguns exemplos são verificados no ramo agrícola como faca para corte basal de colheitadeiras de cana, lâminas de roçadeira e helicoide para transporte de grãos. A indústria de beneficiamento de papel/papelão é outro segmento onde esse aço está presente, sendo usado para facas de corte e vinco. Com o objetivo de melhorar a conformabilidade da liga 27MnCrB5-2 no estado temperado, de forma a atender o nível de conformação solicitado, principalmente na fabricação de facas de corte e vinco, foram processados quatro lotes com diferentes conceitos de tratamento térmico de têmpera (martêmpera e austêmpera) para posterior avaliação das estruturas e propriedades mecânicas, a fim de correlacioná-las com a conformabilidade da dobra em cada situação. Com os resultados encontrados e testes práticos realizados durante fabricação da faca de corte e vinco, foi possível constatar melhora significativa na microestrutura/propriedade mecânica/processamento da peça considerando sua conformabilidade com um dos parâmetros de austêmpera utilizados.

The Two Rivers Project is a feasibility study to evaluate the UG2 chromitite layer on Dwarsrivier372KT, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The project, which commenced in August 2001, is expected to receive go-ahead early in 2003. The project sponsors (AVMIN 55%, Implats 45%)required project delivery within a short timeframe requiring optimization of the geological and geostatistical programme. Geological modelling was carried out in parallel to the drilling programme, and significant up-front geostatistical preparatory work was done. The time saving was approximately 4 – 6 months on project delivery. The cost saving to the project (excluding NPV considerations) is estimated at R20–30 million. Compilation of data on materials of metallurgical interest is one of the important activities of the Berkeley Thermodynamics Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Recent renewed interest in metallurgy of vanadium renders the present compilation a timely guide for experimentation to improve present methods or to develop better methods of extractive metallurgy. Thermodynamic data for vanadium and its inorganic compounds have been critically surveyed, selected, and compiled into one convenient reference from which information can be readily obtained for evaluating heat balances, determining trends, and establishing limits of metallurgical processes. By indicating the direction of experimentation, this report enables the saving of time, effort, and expense which would otherwise be necessary for trial and error experimentation. Much of the data has been obtained experimentally at the Berkeley laboratory. Other data were collected through an extensive survey of worldwide literature through April 1965. Estimates were made when no data were avail-able. Data on the vanadium halides was sparse, and the results derived from existing data were at times divergent. Some of the selected values for the halides may need modification as more or better experimental data become available.

The increasing depth, mechanisation and distance of working areas from surface connections places an ever greater contaminant burden on ventilation airflows. Some British Coal mines are already experiencing significant problems in providing adequate climatic conditions in the working areas and have had to introduce air conditioning. Previous work has shown that in mines of low to moderate virgin strata temperature the application of controlled district recirculation could serve to improve climatic conditions at the working area.

The ability to detect and quantify ground movements in underground mine workings is of the utmost importance to the safety of miners and continuity of operations. Rib sloughage is one of the most common forms of underground deformations. Remote sensing techniques, such as laser scanning, can be used to quantify this rib sloughage, by recording precise, time-lapse point clouds of mine workings. In order to determine sloughage volumes and locations, a total of 11 laser scans were performed 41 days apart at a working section of an underground limestone mine. During this period, significant sloughing and scaling occurred, allowing for differentiation between the initial and final point clouds.

An inventory was made by the Bureau of Mines of wastes of mineral origin, water requirements, treatment of wastes, and water treatment practice of 163 industrial installations in the Lower Missouri River Basin. This is the second and concluding report on the survey, conducted in cooperation with the Missouri Basin Field Committee of the Department of the Interior as part of the Missouri Basin project. Principal industries covered by this second report are: Sand and gravel, coal, meat, ice, brewing, paint, petroleum, chemical, fabricated metals, and a number of industries having either no waterborne wastes, or none of mineral origin. Gravel, sand, and silt from 47 producers are the major wastes, totaling 6 million tons annually, Coal mine wastes in the form of slurried solids from washing crude coal are second in volume, totaling 100,000 tons per year. They contain an average of about 40 percent coal. Salt is the third largest waste, amounting to 28,000 tons per year, Next is calcium carbonate, most of which is formed in water treatments, Because of its high unit value, chromic acid is important, although the waste quantity is much smaller; cyanide wastes are also significant because large quantities of sodium hydroxide and chlorine are consumed in their treatments prior to disposal. The various industries discharging wastes use 38 billion gallons of water annually; the recirculation rate is 109 billion gallons per year. The plants discharging no waterborne mineral wastes use 2 billion gallons of water per year and recirculate more than 1 billion gallons. Sand and gravel plants use 13.5 billion gallons; petroleum refineries use 10 billion gallons in direct use and recirculate 82 billion gallons per year.

"This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Mines as part of a program of the Solid Fuels Administration to encourage the utilization of anthracite fines, the objective being to determine the practicability of using anthracite fines in the manufacture of packagedThe experimental loss of packaged fuel covered by this report were made at a commercial plant using the Glenn Smith process and ordinarily making packaged fuel from Pocahontas screenings. These lots included several made from straight antimacite mines and others made from various blends of anthracite fines with four different bituminous coals. In all cases an asphalt binder was used. Determinations of the physical properties and the cobustion characteristics o the various samples of packaged fuel were made by the. Bureau of Mines at the Central Experiment Station.The physical tests indicated that a packaged fuel of sufficient strength for ordinary handling can be made from straight anthracite coal or from a wide variety of blends of anthracite fixes with bitunimous coal, using asphaltic binder. However the combustion tests indicated that packaged fuel made from anthracite alone tended to crumble excessively during burning and that as much as 30 to 50 percent of a caking coal may be required In the mixture to produce a block having satisfactory combustion characteristics.The authors wish to acknowledge the. splendid cooperation of Messrs. This report is a general summary of pertinent data on the manufacture and use of synthetic ammonia products. It provides a condensed summary of the potentialities of a synthetic ammonia industry in North Dakota for Federal, State, and private organizations that may be interested in helping to develop an integrates synthetic ammonia and fertilizer industry. The report contains discussions of: (1) Materials used in the manufacture of nitrogenous fertilizers, nitric acid, and urea; (2) National production, imports, exports, and consumption; (3) the ammonia industry, location, capacity of plants; (4) processes used in manufacturing synthetic ammonia, nitric acid, and urea; (5) other potential industries; and (6) analyses of manufaturing and plant cosh;. Additional information on industrial compounds from ammonia and plant nutrients removed by crops is given in Appendixes 1 and 2. Synthetic ammonia is one of the primary ingredients in fertilizers. Resources required in synthetic ammonia manufacture are available in North Dakota. Hydrogen is available from the petroleum and natural gas resources, particularly in the Williston Basin, and from the large lignite resources in the State. Hydrogen can be produced from lignite by a gasification process developed by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak.

No iron ore deposits were reported before 1961 from the Hamersley Ranges, Western Australia, although low-grade bedded iron formations, associated with ferruginous jaspers and cherts, were known to occur in the local Nullagine Series of Precambrian age.In January-March 1961 preliminary investigations in the area drained by the Turner River, Duck Creek and Serpentine Creek revealed the presence of over 1000 million tons of dense botryoidal or pisolitic limonite, forming flat-lying orebodies with 50-57 per cent iron.Large bedded hematitic orebodies were also discovered in the same area in August-October 1961. These have a porous, biscuity texture and an iron content of 60-61 per cent. They occur at a welldefined stratigraphic level (Brockman Iron Formation), normally in synclines where they have been upgraded by circulating meteoric waters during an old cycle erosion.In 1962 systematic geological studies and mapping, together with sampling and scout drilling, indicated larger reserves of biscuity hematitic ore and led to the discovery of massive hematite deposits at Mt. Tom Price. These were extensively drilled in 1963, proving the persistence of' high-grade mineralisation to a depth of 200 ft and over.To date the total indicated reserves of the Hamersley deposits, within the area held by Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, are of the order of 4960 million tons and thus rank among the more important of the world. The reserves are composed of 600 million tons of bedded dense hematite ore with 64-66 per cent iron, 2900 million tons of bedded biscuity hematite-limonite with 60-61 per cent iron, 1360 million tons of limonite (goethite) ranging in grade from 50 to 57 per cent, and 100 million tons of canga (conglomerate) iron ore containing 53-63 per cent iron. In all cases harmful impurities are comparatively low.

The concept of metal zoning has long been recognized (Spurr, 1907, 1923; Emmons, 1924, 1926; Lindgren, 1933; Rateman, 1950), although it has been considered indistinct for most epithermal districts. The geometric relation of barren zones of hydrother-mally altered rock to ore deposits was emphasized in the work of Lovering (1941, 1949, 1950), Sales and Meyer (1948, 1949, 19501, Burbank (1941, 1950), Schwartz (1939, 1950), and Kerr (1947). Lovering (op. cit.) and Sales and Meyer (op. cit.) emphasized the consistent presence of barren alteration envelopes enclosing individual ore bodies, particularly of the vein type. Schwartz (1950) noted a difference between the distribution of alteration zones described by Lovering and by Sales and Meyer, as compared with those associated with the porphyry copper deposits of the Southwest. The disseminated deposits of the Southwest usually occur within large bodies of altered rock whereas most veins do not. In the following discussion the mineralization process is conceived of consisting of two distinct phases: pre-ore nonmetallic alteration and metallization. In the present investigation the position, size, and shape of all known hydro thermally altered areas and the position, size, and metal type of all known ore deposits were plotted on base maps of southwestern and west-central Colorado (Figure 1). The maps indicate a generally consistent geometric relation between altered and metallized areas. The addition of alteration to the pattern of metal deposits establishes a temperature zoning pattern of much greater clarity than that formed by the epithermal metal deposits alone, and allows a more precise definition of mineral belts. The center of strongest mineralization is indicated to be the area of greatest barren alteration, and metal deposits are grouped about it both under structural control and crudely in response to temperature zoning. The combination of an area of strong alteration and associated marginal clusters of metal deposits is defined as a mineral district. The strong similarity in individual deposits, in groups of different types of deposits, and in the alteration-metallization relation in districts throughout the region implies that a single metallogenic province is represented in southwestern and west-central Colorado. The occurrence of deposits in Tertiary voi-canics indicates a late Tertiary metallogenic epoci., although an early Tertiary epoch is known locally as at Ouray. Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. An integration of S isotopic, fluid and mineralogical data for granitoid-related mineralisation showed that the porphyry systems had a predominantly subcrustal magma source, but the inner magma pulse of two-mica granite in the Fleet pluton was derived mainly from reduced sediments. The porphyry-style mineralisation formed from boiling fluids at high crustal levels, with a moderately saline fluid percolating down to the upper veins as they cooled but not penetrating the deeper Talnotry deposit. Veins in peripheral greywackes have a significant magmatic component but also incorporated CO2-rich components and metals released by dewatering of host sediments in response to granitoid intrusion. The low grade of regional metamorphism resulted in the significant fluid input from country rocks which led to the more exotic mineral compositions, especially where argillaceous sediments were involved

"Escalators to access platforms for the Second Avenue Subway Station at 72nd Street in Manhattan are to be installed in the basement of an existing 19-Story residential building. The escalators, which extend below the existing building foundations, require excavation of an inclined rock cavern up to 80-feet deep. Underpinning of columns within the 19-story building as well as a stone masonry party wall and columns for an adjacent 5-story building was completed prior to excavation of the rock cavern to ensure structural stability.This paper will discuss the analysis and design of the underpinning system, the installation and load transfer procedures and the cavern excavation immediately below. The underpinning system was subject to very strict deformation limits and to electronic monitoring prior to and throughout the load transfer and construction process. Key details such as the load transfer mechanism between the reinforced concrete column and the temporary structural steel underpinning frame will be discussed. The challenging rock excavation process will be described which utilized conventional equipment and pattern drilling with Damite rock splitting mortar.INTRODUCTIONPhase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway is being built by MTA Capital Construction (MTACC) to improve subway service on the east side of Manhattan. Entrance 1 for the 72nd Street Station of the Second Avenue Subway is located on the east side of 2nd Avenue at the corner of E 69th Street in New York City. Access to the station mezzanine, approximately 80-feet below grade, is designed to be routed through the basement of an existing 19-story residential building. From the sidewalk, stairs and escalators within the width of sidewalk connect the riding public to a basement level mezzanine, which turns into the building at roughly 16 feet below grade (Fig. 1). Riders then connect to three long escalators to arrive at the station mezzanine. The escalators are to be installed within an inclined and arched cast-in-place (CIP) concrete lined rock cavern (Fig. 2). Construction of both the entrance into the basement and the escalator cavern require the transfer of columns within the 19-story building. Excavation of the escalator cavern also impacts the foundation support for columns and a load bearing party wall for the 5-story residential building immediately to the north. Two stages of load transfer were used at each location. The Stage 1 transfer used a temporary underpinning system to unload the current structure which allowed for construction of the permanent transfer girders. Stage 2 transferred the load from the temporary system to the permanent transfer girders."

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite with length-to-diameter (L/D) ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite) were tested to failure in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Adjustable steel rings, mechanically tightened about the ends of test specimens to create a radial prestress of 3,000 or 5,000 psi prior to the application of axial load, increased end constraint more than was possible in previous tests using solid steel rings. (Solid rings, epoxy-bonded to the ends of dogbone specimens, increased compressive strength compared with that of straight specimens without ring constraint.) During the loading cycle, additional end constraint was produced by lateral expansion of the specimens against the rings. The effect of the end constraint was to increase the compressive strength 55 to 58 percent for the shorter pillars of dogbone shape compared with the compressive strength of straight pillars with the same L/D ratios without ring constraint. Most pillars with L/D ratios of less than 2 were made stronger by end constraint. Pillars with an L/D ratio of 3 did not benefit significantly from end constraint. When the results from compression testing of straight specimens of rock in the laboratory are used to design mine pillars in situ, the pillars will be larger than necessary if the horizontal compressive stress is several thousand pounds per square inch greater than that resulting from the weight of the overlying rock alone. The L/D ratio can be increased by a factor of 1.76 for ratios in the range 0.25 to 3 and still provide the same compressive strength. The safety factor applied with straight specimen test results should also be acceptable for use with constrained pillar test results.

Foundations in Geneva are difficult and expensive due a large overlayer of clay and silt above competent bearing material in the moraine. Common foundation schemes use deep barrettes or bored piles, first passing large, weak layers of soil before finally reaching acceptable, solid moraine with reasonable values of skin friction and end bearing resistance, thus requiring further deep penetration for the necessary length for load transfer in the moraine. Depths of more than 60 m (200 ft) in Geneva are common in this region. At the Onyx-Project Geneva Implenia Foundation Company also encountered these circumstances. Despite usual solutions Implenia referred to an old and well known, but still intelligent and in today’s words smart, efficient and economical solution. Using small shafts, passing the large layers of clay and silt, ending with the pile toe in the underlaying moraine with a belled or underreamed base was the technic adopted to save drilling time, reduce spoil and concrete, so finally reducing the CO2 footprint. Piles with enlarged base (“belled” or “underreamed”) are reported at the beginning of the 20th century, for example at Chicago, which has a quite similar geotechnical structure as Geneva with the need of deep foundations. The first pile base enlargements were built in hand-dug caissons with wood lagging and steel ring bracing. In the 50s and 60s piling works were more and more mechanized, driven by the development of more powerful cranes and specialized drill rigs. Additionally the first tools for mechanized base enlargement were invented around that period. This report describes the project situation at Geneva, the drilling and enlargement technique of the pile base, the verification of the design values with an in-situ bi-directional load test and the smart execution by reduction of CO2 and costs.

During 1983, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized zones to evaluate the mineral resources and potential of the Funeral Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA), Inyo County, California. Eleven mineral properties and two mineralized zones were examined during this study. Of these, six are within the study area and seven adjacent. There are no active mines, in the WSA, nor is there evidence of past production from any claim within the study area. The WSA contains no identified mineral resources. However, occurrences of bentonite, zeolites, and strontium were found in the area. There is little likelihood for resource development of any occurrence in the WSA. The area, in the Basin and Range Physiographic Province, is dominated by a Paleozoic marine sequence. Segments of Tertiary continental fluviolacustrine sediments, including volcaniclastic rocks, abut and overlie the Paleozoic rocks in fault controlled basin areas. Significant concentrations of bentonitic clay and zeolites occur as alteration products in Tertiary tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. However, they are generally low-grade, thin, and discontinuous, precluding commercial development. Limestone, quartzite, and sand and gravel in the area are suitable for many types of construction uses, but similar deposits outside the WSA are closer to markets. No energy resources have been identified in the WSA.
