"Although CO2 content indicates the quantity of carbonate in altered basaltic rocks, it does not measure the intensity of carbonate alteration. CO/CaO molar ratios, which correlate with the relative proportions of individual carbonate species, measure the intensity of carbonatization. The Timmins gold area is characterized by pervasive carbonatization, with large parts of the area having CO2/Ca0 ratios greater than 1, representing C02 supersaturation relative to CaO. The mean CO/CaO in the Timmins area is0.67, compared to 0.13 in two unmineralized control areas. Regional arsenic abundance in the gold-bearing area averages 4 ppm, compared to about 0.35 ppm for the non-mineralized areas. The average K20 and Rb abundances are similar in both mineralized and non-mineralized areas (about 0.30% K20 and 7 ppm Rb). Although there appears to have been no wholesale addition of K20 or Rb to the mineralized area from external sources, these alkalies have been redistributed internally, resulting in patterns of local enrichments and depletions which are characteristic of the mineralized region.Local target anomalies associated with known mineralization consist of CO2/Ca0 > 1.5, As > 10 ppm and K2O > 0. 75%. Not all three values are required to be above these thresholds in order to identify local targets. Combinations such as C02/ Ca0 > 1.5 and As < 10 ppm, CO/CaO 1-1.5 and K20 > 0. 75 or K20 > 0. 75 and As > 10 ppm are equally indicative of proximity to gold occurrences. Gold-bearing veins and associated anomalies occur throughout the entire volcanic succession and are not restricted to any particular stratigraphic horizons. The levels and patterns of alteration and occurrences of gold appear to be structurally controlled."

This publication, for the calendar year 1959, contains statistical data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines, ore-dressing plants, and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to request data on injuries and employment in the metal-mining industry, and the information, voluntarily submitted by the operators, contributes immeasurably to the promotion of safety in the metal-mining industry. Every effort has been made to make the annual canvass as complete as possible. The data presented are classified according to the hind of ore mined and includes information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, placer, uranium- vanadium, and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodity is shown in tables 17 and 18.

The compilation of the sampling nomogram is an essential tool in the optimization of a sampling protocol and allows the operator to track the change in relative variance of the sampling error (the Fundamental sampling error) during steps of comminution and mass reduction in the process of recovery of the aliquot for analysis. The data required for the compilation of the nomogram are centred on the sampling constant K and the exponent, alpha (a) of the nominal fragment size. Five methods for establishing K have been identified, but two of them, the duplicate sampling analysis method and the heterogeneity test method purport to provide such constant. The step by step procedure for each of these two methods was examined using broken ores from three mines, Mponeng mine, Kloof mine, and Lily mine. Two of these mines (Mponeng and Kloof) are typical Witwatersrand-type gold mines, and the third is an Archaean-type shear related gold deposit situated in the Barberton Greenstone belt. The results suggest that the factor K derived using the heterogeneity test is very accurate, but applies only to a single size fraction in the spectrum of comminuted materials. The calculation of gold grain sizes using this method appear to be too small and do not conform with the results from detailed mineralogical studies. The factors K and alpha derived using the duplicate series analysis are appropriate for use across a wide spectrum of comminution sizes and also provide realistic gold grain sizes, comparable with the equivalent circular diameter of gold grains identified in mineralogical studies of the ores.

The expert system component of Knowledge Base System supports the analysis and interpretation phases of ventilation design with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate design. The paper describes the ?ES-VENT? knowledge based system developed at Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad, India for an on-line diagnosing of the ventilation problems using the ?IITMRULE? expert system development tool. In the ?IITMRULE? expert system tool, it has been decided to use a backward chaining reasoning process to reach the goal state i.e. the final conclusion. ES-VENT system is made of three modules: On-line Data, Diagnostics and KBS. Each module is being a collection of several programs. The paper mainly deals with the parameters affecting the ventilation of underground mines such as air-velocity, air pressure, temperature, dust, and humidity and gas contents. The graphical presentation of these parameters on the computer and the interactive part of the developed program is expected to help a ventilation officer to determine the changes in a ventilation circuit necessary to bring the mine ventilation to the desired value. Once such changes are physically effected, the display will indicate if the changes have brought the desired effect or not on ventilation. Severe whipping of shuttle car trailing cables occurs when the car stops suddenly or reverses direction. This causes cable damage, and can seriously injure personnel near the cable. FMC has contracted with the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design, build and demonstrate a reel control system that will significantly reduce or eliminate whipping. II. CONCLUSIONS Results of engineering effort show that the following conditions are primarily responsible for the whipping problem. Causes may exist individually, or in combination.

The effectiveness of some of the proposed mechanisms, especially those that depend on Suzuki segregation1" or on short-range order,2-6 SRO? should be strongly dependent on heat treatment. Since internal friction investigations in this system indicate that there is stress-induced order,&apos; we must also consider the possibility of local atomic rearrangement or short-range ordering in the stress field of a dislocation. There is not complete agreement whether these mechanisms should be most effective in raising the flow stress, in causing yield drops. or some combination of these two effects. This work was undertaken to determine the effects in the Ag-Au system of mechanisms that depend on segregation or order by using known but drastically different cooling rates following a high-temperature treatment. By comparing the critical resolved shear stress, CRSS, for slip measured after a very slow cool and again after a fast cool (quench) of the same crystal, it is possible to determine the effect of cooling rate on CRSS* and on yield drops. The single-crystal CRSS was determined at several compositions because there has been no data published across the phase field since the publication of room-temperature flow stress by Sachs and Weerts.&apos; EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Starting with materials of 99.999 pct purity, single-crystal specimens of random orientation 1.25 mm square by 4 cm long were prepared with 0, 10, 14, 25, 30. 50, 70. 75. 80, 90. and 100 at. pct Au. Crystals were grown in an inert atmosphere using a modified Bridgman technique with a growth rate of 1.5 cm per hr in a gradient of 3°C per cm. To obtain a maximum practical degree of SRO, the crystals were cooled at a rate of 275&apos;C per hr to about 310°C and then cooled at 6°C per hr to approximately 200°C. Specimens were tested in tension immersed in an alcohol bath at -72°C (201°K) at a strain rate > = 0.003 mm"1 to determine the CRSS (7). The activation volume of several crystals was determined from the flow stress increment (72 - T1) for a tenfold increase in strain rate. The total shear strain varied from 0.05 to 2.3 pct but was generally less than 0.4 pct. After testing, each crystal was then held at 500°C for 10 min, quenched into brine at -35°C and. after storage at -71°C for 1 day, retested in tension using a procedure identical to that of the first test. The quenching apparatus, see Fig. 1, was designed to enable accurate temperature control and rapid quenching while preventing specimen contamination and accidental deformation. Test data from a specimen with a fine thermocouple spot-welded to it indicated a cooling rate of 104C per sec. The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated combustion of lignite in domes-tic heating equipment to obtain information on equipment performance and to evaluate testing procedures. Three types of domestic heating equipment were tested, ranging from a hand-tilled, magazine-type space heater to a ram-type overfeed stoker. Lignite was readily burned in each of the three units under various test conditions. Burnoff rates determined by adding weighed charges to the magazine were found to be in error because of shrinkage of the lignite when only a portion of the magazine capacity was consumed during a test. More reliable burnoff rates could be determined by carbon-nitrogen balances. A hand-fired magazine-type space heater (Booker heater) was operated without the furnace attachment at efficiencies to 75 pct. One test series was run with minimum supervision under conditions encountered in actual household operation. No mechanical trouble was encountered.

"ArcelorMittal Mines Canada operates hydraulic classifiers to reduce the silica content of an iron oxide concentrate from 4.5% to less than 1.2% SiO2. Sampling campaigns were conducted to develop a preliminary model for the hydraulic classifier. Results show that iron oxide and quartz are respectively concentrated in the coarse and fine size fractions of the classifier feed. The mineral partition curves in the classifier and the size distribution of the minerals in the feed are used to simulate the classifier operation in order to identify the source of variability observed in the daily plant production data. Results indicate that most of the variation is probably caused by unsteady operating conditions of the classifiers.INTRODUCTION Hydraulic classifiers are a class of gravity separation devices (Wills, 1992) used to classify particles according to their size and specific gravity. Hydraulic classifiers also known as density separators (Hearn, 2002) combine hindered settling and upward flow of water to selectively entrain light particles to an overflow stream. Denser particles settle to an underflow stream. Hydraulic classifiers are used for various purposes ranging from cleaning of coal (Das, Sarkar, & Mehrotra, 2009), recovery of chromite from plant tailings (Kumar, Tripathy, & Rao, 2009) to upgrading iron oxide concentrate (Hearn, 2002). ArcelorMittal Mines Canada operates several hydraulic classifiers to upgrade an iron oxide concentrate by removing fine quartz and other light minerals from hematite that is the main iron oxide mineral. A project was initiated to analyze the operation of the classifier in an attempt to identify the source of the variability in the production results and to assess the potential of increasing iron recovery in the classifier. One possible disturbance for the classifier operation is the change in the classifier feed composition and size distribution, while the other considered disturbance is the operation of the classifier. The paper is divided into five sections. The first section summarizes the ore processing sequence for the production of iron oxide pellets to identify the position of the hydraulic classifier in the process. The second section describes the hydraulic classifier. The third section discusses the sampling campaigns conducted on the hydraulic classifier. The method used to process the data from sampling, the results of the data processing and simulation of the classifier are discussed in the remaining sections."

Whole-structure and mid-wall responses of 33 non-traditional structures to surface coal mine blasting were characterized. Eighty-nine blasts were conducted at 11 mine sites throughout the U.S. to measure blastgenerated dynamic response of structures typically found in the proximity of surface coal mining. Structures selected for this study include log-type, manufactured (single- and double-wide trailers), “mine camp”-type, adobe, and stone. Traditional acoustic microphones, t&axial (ground) and single component (structure) velocity transducers were used to record airblast, ground motions, and structures response time histories with a common time base. Wall crack displacement gages were used to record static and dynamic movement of existing drywall cracks. The relative responses of selected “atypical” structures to blast vibrations and nonblasting causes of structural stress, including natural forces, environmental effects, and human habitation, are compared. The purpose of this study is to document and compare vibration characteristics of structures that were not included in previous studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others in establishing the widely adopted safe level blast vibration criteria in the U.S. An important objective of this study is to outline an evaluation process including structure uniqueness relative to cracking susceptibility.

Abstract -At True Hill in southwestern New Brunswick, low-grade porphyry-style Bi-Sn-Mo greisen mineralization is associated with the cupola of an epizonal granite porphyry (granite) that also exhibits three episodes of brecciation. The first episode of brecciation is an in situ, 8 m to 10 m wide transitional zone of net-veined to coarse-grained "blocky" endogranitic mesobreccia that is chloritized and greisenized and hosts weak disseminated mineralization. ln a zone doser to the host rock­ granite contact, angular fine- to coarse-grained endogranitic mesobreccia with greisenized matrix is superimposed on the earlier transitional breccia. The latest episode is fault-controlled and consists of quartz- and chalcedony-hosted subangular to rounded fine-grained "pebble" mesobreccias that crosscut and brecciate the other breccia types, as well as the adjacent altered metasedimentary country rocks. The first two episodes of brecciation are magrnatic-hydrothermal in origin related to hydrofracturing of the granite carapace and are accompanied by greisenization and mineralization, whereas the post-mineralization, silica-hosted, "pebble" mesobreccias related to hydromagrnatic, low­ temperature fluid circulation and/or boiling along faults near the contact. These magmatic­ hydrothermal and hydromagmatic mesobreccias are similar to those associated with W-Mo-Bi porphyry-greisen mineralization at the Mount Pleasant deposit.

This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum?s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill ? a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was ?proof of concept? and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years. Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity ? this paper describes the projects? roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs.

Relatively pure crystalline lead sulfate (PbSO4) can be produced by chemical vapor transport from an impure source such as the lead-acid battery paste or the roast-ore-leach-residue from a hy¬drometallurgical process-route. In a closed-reactor, transport of matter is induced by a tempera¬ture-gradient and the steady-state transfer rate can be calculated using the data on the standard free energies of formation for the species present and the pertinent binary diffusion coefficients. The present work focusses on chemical vapor transport in a tubular reactor (1.4-cm inner diameter x 10-cm long) with the source- and deposition-ends held at 850°C (T,) and 750°C (Td), respectively; PbC12(g) is the &apos;solvent&apos; or &apos;transport agent&apos; and NiSO4(s) placed in the source-zone -serves to maintain a sufficiently high S0,-potential such that the stability of the lead sulfate species is ensured. For the purposes of analysis, the gas-phase in the reactor is assumed to consist of eight species: H2O, PbC12, SO3, SO2. O2 HO, C12, and PbC14. The reaction between C12(g) and PbSO4(s) in the high-temperature source-zone produces PbCl2, SO2, and 02; four more reaction-equilibria in the same zone yield other species. In the low-temperature deposition-zone, reaction equilibrium involving PbC12, H2O, and SO, leads to the nucleation and growth of PbSO4 crystals; three other reaction-equilibria occur in this zone. By employing the virtual equilibrium state for the end-zones and coupling it to the Stefan-Maxwell diffusion equations for each of the gas species, the respective partial pressures for these, in the source- and deposition-zones, are computed at steady-state. From these data, the molar fluxes of PbCl2. PbCl4, and so forth, are determined. Allowing for the transport-enhancing effects of thermal convection, the net transport rate of lead (or PbSO4) is duly calculated for specified initial conditions. This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in development of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. Final Report Volume III - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 94-l Bridge Conveyor describes the various noise control modifications to the bridge conveyor, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information.

Manitoba Mining and Milling operations consist of three underground mines (Thompson T1, T3 and Birchtree), feeding the Thompson Mill. Three years ago, a collaborative effort involving Mines Exploration, Mines Project Development Group, Mill Technical Services and Vale Base Metals Technical Excellence Center was initiated to establish and verify the cause of high variability in concentrate quality and Ni recovery at the Thompson Mill. One outcome of this work was a program to systematically characterize the mineralogy and metallurgical performance of current and future orebodies feeding the mill. Mineralogy results show that high value enabling ores typically have a high pentlandite to pyrrhotite ratio and benign silicate mineralogy (mostly quartz and feldspar from sedimentary host rocks), while metallurgically challenging ores contain some combination of pyrite and/or hexagonal (non-magnetic) pyrrhotite and/or elevated quantities of talc (with associated carbonates) derived from altered ultramafic host rocks. The metallurgical performance of these two ore types has been simulated by an Excel particle flotation model, which calculates the relative floatability of particles based on the particle’s mineral composition and mineral locking determined from MLA images. The relationship between these mineral properties measured by MLA and metallurgical performance was established using 13 monthly composite samples from Thompson Mill. The model was then validated with results of laboratory flotation experiments on individual orebodies submitted for evaluation. The validated model can be used to predict plant metallurgical performance based on individual ore bodies feeding the mill. Individual orebody’s grade-recovery curves are assumed to be additive, and can be weighted in proportion to the mill feed to predict mill recovery over the same time period. The ore mixing can be done with a simple Excel spreadsheet and comes with a graphical output for easy visualization of the resulting grade-recovery curve.

Owing to the need for additional sources of supply of both zinc and lead following World War II, the Bureau of Mines investigated many abandoned lead-zinc mines in the eastern United States. A series of shallow veins in south-western St. Lawrence County has long been a subject of speculation. These veins, which average about 4 feet in width and cut across the bedding of the country rock at right angles, are filled with calcite-carrying galena and sphalerite. The deposits have been worked sporadically during the last 115 years. From 1837 to 1852 the Coal Hill, the North, and the Victoria mines near the village of Rossie were at their peak of activity. Other calcite veins were prospected and a small production was realized. The Bureau of Mines began diamond drilling May 1, 1950, under the general supervision of McHenry Mosier, chief, Mining Branch, Bureau of Mines, Region VIII, and under the immediate supervision of the author) who was project engineer, following the preliminary examination by Robert S. Sanford. A total of 3,870.2 feet was drilled in 18 holes on four of the numerous deposits scattered over Macomb and Rossie townships. Drilling was completed September 21, 1950.

Potential problems associated with groundwater inflows are a major concern to many Saskatchewan mining operations. Rock mass behaviour and stability have been linked to groundwater inflow potential. An estimate of the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass is an important factor for assessing groundwater inflow potential. This paper presents a procedure that was developed to conduct air permeability tests, for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass. Tests were conducted near underground excavations with the goal of assessing links between measured air permeability, rock mass classification and the rock mass response to adjacent excavations. Measured changes in air permeability corresponding to the distance from excavation boundaries may indicate changes to joint properties such as joint aperture, continuity and frequency. This study outlines the instrumentation, the experimental and analytical procedures, and the preliminary results from testing.

In this paper, results of underground measurements conducted in gateroad 3, seam 615, at the Bobrek-Centrum Colliery are presented. The Bobrek-Centrum Colliery is owned by Kompania Weglowa, the largest hard coal producer in the European Union. Yearly production at the colliery, including the longwall system, is about 2 million tonnes. Gateroad 3 was used simultaneously for two retreating longwall faces, No. 1 and No. 2. This working was also employed for the conveyor belt for longwall No. 1 and served as a transport road for longwall No. 2. Approximately 100 meters of gateroad 3 was maintained behind the face of longwall No.1 and then, with the progress of longwall No. 2, it was liquidated. In this paper, we present the results of underground measurements of vertical and horizontal convergence in gateroad 3. We also present the results of numerical modeling for deformation of the working. Finally, we analyse the accuracy of the numerical calculations by comparing them to the actual deformation of gateroad 3.

Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

Statistics Canada record s indicate that in recent years 70 to 80% of the entire Canadian coal production originated from Western Canadian mines, in which about 55 to 65% of the coals are bituminous. Until recently, less than 20% of the latter were extracted by underground methods , the remainder being surface-mined. However, it is estimated that within the foreseeable future up to 80 or 90% will have to be gained by underground techniques. Although Western Canadian coal resources are considerable, they are unfortunately locked in severely distorted, steeply pitching and faulted seams of variable thickness. Consequently, their economic extraction poses serious engineering problems. One possible solution to the problems is to apply hydromechanical methods to underground mining. This is a well-proven method shown to be economically viable under Western Canadian conditions. This paper endeavours to widen the scope of published data on hydraulic coal mining and is based on practical engineering and cost data gathered through contacts with West German designers and operators of hydraulic mines.
