"Alkali/alumina and MgO/alumina molar ratio plots graphically portray both chemical and mineralogical changes accompanying potassic, phyllic, argillic, chloritic, and alunitic alteration of quartz monzonites and granodiorites hosting porphyry (as well as lode and greisen) ore deposits. The molar ratio plots can be used to identify different types of alteration. In most cases, the identification based on molar ratios coincides with petrographic data. In those instances where the molar ratio and petrographic identifications do not agree, the mineralogy might need to be re-examined. Hydrothermal alteration studies using trace elements could benefit from the application of complementary alkali/alumina molar ratio plots.Le diagramme des rapports molaires alkali/alumine et MgO/alumine illustre clairement les changements chimiques et minéralogiques qui accompagnent les altérations potassique, phyllique, argillique, chloritique, and alunitique des monzonites à quartz et des granodiorites encaissant les gîtes de type porphyrique, ainsi que des veines et des greisens qui leur sont associés. The purpose of this book is to provide an indication of what good hoisting practice is and how it might be achieved. To this end the book contains discussions of equipment and inspection and maintenance procedures developed and used by mining people in striving for safe, reliable hoisting equipment. Most of this information comes from domestic practice; the rest is foreign, notably from Canada. Most things discussed have long proved their general worth, and others promise to; a few are beginnings. However, nothing is conjectural or theoretical; the practices described herein are in use somewhere in the mining world. The stress is on equipment in use; it is not a design-guidelines manual. Nevertheless, there are some sections dealing with design material since it may be of value in a maintenance/ replacement sense. Mine hoisting installations encompass such a wide variety of equipment and conditions that it is impractical to specifically cover them all. This book mainly treats conventional systems using conventional components with some discussion of the more common unconventional (special) systems in use. There is no recognized definition for a "conventional" mine-hoisting system. Herein the term means those systems most commonly used in daily operations for transporting men, materials, and product-electrically driven drum and friction hoists, with guided conveyances running in vertical or inclined shafts. Beyond this, what "conventional" means is probably best illustrated by the topics discussed.

Design and implementation of a roof bolting plan requires reliable geotechnical information of strata, such as rock strength, and locations of interfaces and voids/fractures. The drilling parameters obtained during normal roof bolt installation cycle provide a fast and economic way to gather information on the geological structure within the bolted horizon. The purpose of this research project is to develop a method for identifying the geological features in the mine roof strata based on drilling parameters of roof bolter. The criterion for void/fracture prediction has been developed and proven valid. This paper focuses on the estimation of the strength of roof strata by using drilling parameters. Based on the results of a series of underground and laboratory tests, feed pressure is found to be the most sensitive parameter when the strength of roof strata changes. Moreover, it was also found that both penetration rate and rotation rate have obvious impact on the magnitude of feed pressure. Based on these findings, the criterion for the estimation of roof strata strength has been developed using the relationship among feed pressure, penetration rate and rotation rate and implemented in MRGIS.

Introduction The most commonly used ground control design in coal mining is the determination of pillar size by various pillar strength formulae for mine layout (Bieniawski, 1983; Holland, 1973; Hustrulid, 1976; Obert and Duvall 1967; Wilson and Ashwin, 1972). However, there have been few documented case histories concerning the validity of those strength formulae. Recently there are indications that those strength formulae tend to overdesign considerably. From a safety point of view, there is nothing wrong with overdesign. But an overdesign with large chain pillars reduces the flexibility of machine movement and decreases production. It also reduces coal recovery and, thus, shortens the reserve's life. This is especially true for small operators who own a limited reserve. Those small mines, through past practices or out of necessity, experiment with smaller pillars than those predicted by the strength formulae. Conclusive ev¬idence has been collected that points to the need of a new concept of coal pillar design. Two case studies will be cited to illustrate this point. 3-D US pillar strength formulae Figure 1 shows a sectional layout of a one-unit mine. The seam was about 1.3 m (50 in.) thick with a uniform cover of 64 m (210 ft). A house was located near the center of the section. The homeowner demanded that no surface subsidence and domestic well dewatering should ever be allowed as a result of underground room-and-pillar mining. Physical properties - strength and Young's modulus - of the rock strata including coal were obtained by testing small samples in the laboratory. The uniaxial compressive strength of the coal was 3660 kPa (823 psi). Using various pillar strength formulae, the homeowner recommended that square chain pillars be at least 11 m (35 ft) wide. The coal company, however, desired to pursue optimum coal recovery in the safest and most economical manner. They engaged in three-dimensional finite element analysis of the section taking into account the complete stratigraphic sequence of the overburden. Results indicated that the section can be developed by 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries at 21 m (70 ft) center-to-center. In retreat, the pillars can be splitted along both centerlines leaving a stump pillar of 5.5 m (18 ft) square at each of the four corners. Zircon (ZrSiO4) sand production of about 1.1 Mt/a(1.2 million stpy) predominates the global supply of zirconium minerals. Baddeleyite (ZrO2) contributes less than 1 percent of supply. Zircon is almost exclusively produced as a co-product from the mining of titanium minerals, mainly from mineralized beach sands. In 2004, there were a number of new projects under consideration that were more dependent on zircon revenue than for titanium minerals. This reflected sustained higher zircon prices and forecast ongoing supply shortages in the absence of major new discoveries.

Eh-pH measurements were taken on an industrial zinc reverse flotation process at Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited. Laboratory zinc reverse flotation testwork on samples of the feed to the industrial process produced Eh-pH data which were similar to the data from the industrial process.Later, the Eh-pH data from the industrial process were compared with data from a pilot plant scale zinc reverse flotation process at Mount Isa Mines Limited. After comparison with the data from Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation, deficiencies in the pilot plant Eh-pH data could be recognised and corrective actions were taken for the pilot plant. A robust pilot plant zinc reverse flotation process was obtained with consistent performance at the expected level.The implications of these findings for a range of processes are also discussed.

Many modern industries rely on rare earth elements (REEs) to produce products that are essential to both civil and defense applications. In a prior study (Vass et al., 2019), the authors showed that REE grades in acid mine drainage (AMD) and associated byproduct precipitates from AMD treatment (AMDp) warrant evaluation as a feedstock for REE production. The current work extends that effort through a broad survey of 141 AMD treatment sites in Northern and Central Appalachia. In this study, 185 raw AMD and 623 AMDp field samples were obtained and analyzed to assess the REE and major metal concentrations. Results show that an average of 282 μg/L and 724 g/tonne of REEs occur in AMD and AMDp respectively. Additionally, both basins contained similar distributions of REEs, and these distributions tended to favor heavy and critical REEs when compared with traditional REE ore deposits. Geospatial analysis identified a total resource of 340 tonnes stored at the 141 sites sampled in this study. While this analysis did not quantify the basin-wide REE inventory, it does indicate the impact that processing cut-off grades will have on the overall AMDp resource base.

In this paper, the computer program ‘SHAFT’ developed for estimation of support requirements for circular mine shafts is introduced. Theory of support design is based on the analytical solutions of circular excavations under non-hydrostatic loading (Detourney and St. John1), and Lame’s thick-wall cylinder theory (Timoshenko6). For rock mass strength property determination Hoek-Brown failure criterion (Hoek et al.2) is used. Mainly two types of support, concrete and steel are taken into consideration as a support member. Program is written in Quick Basic language. Input parameters of the program are shaft radius, number of zones having the same properties along the shaft depth, and depth, unit weight, horizontal to vertical stress ratio, GSI, and uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock of each zone, and compressive strength and safety factor of support member. Output of the program is the graphical representation of shaft with the required support member and thickness throughout the depth of the shaft.

The CTRL London Tunnels The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) London Tunnels comprise 36km of internal diameter bores that were driven by Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnels were constructed between the autumn of 2002 and the spring of 2004. The permanent works also included the 1.1 km long station box at Stratford, five ventilation shafts of depths between 30 and 54 m, 29 cross passages and various large diameter sprayed concrete lined connecting tunnels. Hydrologic investigations at Gold Quarry began in 1989 and continued through 1991. Hydro-stratigraphic units include Tertiary sedimentary rocks, Paleozoic siltstones and carbonates. These units display complex and variable aquifer parameters as a function of faulting and hydrothermal alteration, creating compartmentalized hydrologic domains. Testing has included step-tests, spinner production logs and constant discharge tests. Two Three-Dimensional Finite Element Models have been developed, one for optimizing the pit dewatering system and the second for predicting regional impacts of dewatering. Aquifer testing and long term pumping have been used to calibrate both Finite Element Models.

Owing to decreasing high-grade ore reserves, there is a need for better understanding of the jigging process to improve the recovery efficiency of finer, lower grade material. The use of positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) was examined as a technique to study the motion of iron ore particles inside a laboratory batch jig. PEPT is a non-invasive method that can provide three-dimensional kinetic data on a particle in laboratory-scale processing units and has been successfully used to study mills, hydrocyclones, and flotation. Experiments were conducted to determine whether PEPT would be a viable technique to study iron ore jigging and what valuable information could be obtained. The results indicated that detailed information on the stratification rate of a particle could be obtained, with adequate resolution to track the particle?s movement through an individual jig pulse.

Introduction The Cannon mine at Wenatchee, WA has recently been brought into operation to recover gold from the sandstones of the Swauk formation. The mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and Breakwater Resources. A tailings impoundment was constructed to impound 2.7 to 3.6 Mt (3 to 4 million st) of tailings at 1.8 kt/a (2000 stpd) over about five years. This paper describes the design and construction of the impoundment. In particular, it describes the 100 m (300 ft) high earthfill embankment that is the main feature of the facility. Project environment The project is located on the outskirts of Wenatchee, a town of about 40,000 people. The town is situated on the flat alluvial terraces beside the Columbia River. The Cascade Mountains rise from the terraces in a series of ridges and valleys. The mine is at the foot of the Cascades. The tailings impoundment is in one of the steep valleys. The climate is mild and dry (Table 1). Site selection Twelve alternative sites within a 16-km (10-mile) radius of the mine were examined. Decision making theory was used to select the most suitable site. Advantages of the chosen site include its proximity to the mine and its low visibility from points of common public access. Also, the area was already heavily impacted by an existing silica quarry. The major disadvantage of the site is the need to pump tailings over a distance of 1.5 km (1 mile) and against a static head of 200 m (655 ft). Also, it is located in a gulch just upstream from the town of Wenatchee. Site geology The impoundment is generally underlain by interbedded sandstones and siltstones. The siltstones are often shattered. The sandstones are often friable. Both rock types are extensively jointed. Some isolated faulting of the sediments occurred before the area was covered with basalt flows. About 10,000 years ago, at the end of the ice age, the basalts were covered by 3 to 10 m (10 to 33 ft) of wind blown loess - a fine sandy clay and silt. River deposits filled the base of the valley to depths between 5 and 25 m (16 and 82 ft). Under the main part of the embankment, these materials were removed to expose bedrock. Ground water flow is generally through the more permeable layers. The permanent water table is about 5 m (16 ft) beneath the ground surface. Appropriate software and hardware necessary to adapt a x-ray CT analyzer for determination of coal washability has recently been developed and sucessfully tested for well characterized samples under laboratory conditions. Evaluation of the CT-based analyzer under simulated on-line conditions is also presented to verify the on-line capabilities of the newly developed x-ray CT analyzer for the control of coarse coal cleaning circuits. The investigation shows that the data obtained from CT washability analyses compare favorably with experimental sink-float data. Further, image frequency was considered to evaluate the CT-Based coal washability analyzer for simulated on-line conditions. Specifically the number of observations (image spacing) needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set were determined.

The Bureau of Mines studied the uniaxial compressive strength of model rock pillars as a function of the angle and spacing of noncohesive planes of weakness. The model pillars were prepared from NX 2-l/8-inch diameter drill core of limestone, sandstone, and granite, and the planes of weakness were diamond saw cuts ground flat and smooth. The angle of the planes of weakness, measured from the horizontal, varied from zero to 57° in approximately 15° increments. When two planes of weakness were used, the thickness-to-diameter ratio of the wafer was 1/4, 1/2, and 1, Approximately 400 model pillars were tested in uniaxial compression. The results indicate that the uniaxial compressive strength of model pillars decreases rapidly as the angle of the plane of weakness increases from 30° to 57°, and that the spacing of these planes of weakness has only a minor effect on the strength. The effect of the number of horizontal planes of weakness, with a spacing of 1/4 and 1/2 of the diameter, upon the compressive strength of model pillars was also investigated. These results indicate that as the number of planes of weakness increases the compressive strength of the pillar decreases. Normalizing the data provides useful estimates of model pillar strengths for any rock type.

The design and operation of coal preparation plants are governed by the inherent quality of the raw coal to be processed, market specifications and the saleable tonnage requirements. Topography influences the layout of the plant but does not affect the process design. The coal market comprises many sectors, each having specific requirements with respect to both size and quality. In turn, these have led to different levels of preparation and the development of specific types of coal preparation plant design. Developments in processing techniques and processing equipment have also influenced the design and now give the preparation engineer numerous permutations in process and equipment selection. This paper gives an overview of the coal industry in general and summarizes some of the developments in the design of plants and technical developments in the areas of dense medium processing, fine coal treatment and equipment design.

Crush pillars are widely used in mine workings on the Merensky Reef in the Bushveld Complex to prevent panel collapses. Crush pillars are expected to fail as or soon after they emerge from the face and failure should occur non-violently. Unfortunately, violent failure occurs frequently and is said to be the main cause of seismicity associated with mining of the Merensky Reef. Recent work by Napier, Malan, and du Plessis has shown that limitequilibrium quasi-static models are able to simulate pillar failure using three states of strength of rock in pillars, namely intact, residual after failure, and decayed strength after later time-dependent (viscous) weakening. We have previously introduced an additional state of strength to account for the dynamic failure that results in seismic events, and found that this approach could be used to generate synthetic seismic catalogues similar to observed seismicity for deep-level gold mines, where seismicity takes place mostly on advancing faces. The less brittle seam material of the Merensky Reef, compared to the brittle quartzites and lavas of the Witwatersrand reefs, results in little or no face bursting and is modelled with an assumed plastic strain of some 0.005 over an effective stope width of 2 m before failure. When this plastic yield is surpassed, we allow the reef to fail ?seismically?. We show that synthetic seismic catalogues modelled in this way have some of the features of observed seismicity. Analysis is greatly facilitated using our custom-built software that reads the mine?s survey data into a database and presents results in an interactive graphical form.

"The Lucky Jim mine is at Zincton in Slocan mmmg division; on the Kaslo-Nakusp branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. It is owned and operated by Zincton Mines; Limited; a subsidiary of Sheep Creek Gold Mines; Limited. The mine is far in the lead in the production of zinc in the Slocan. Its recorded production from concentrates and shipping ore was 102; 260; 191 pounds of zinc to the end of 1945.GENERAL GEOLOGY With the exception of acidic dykes the rocks near the Lucky Jim mine belong to the Slocan series, which is Triassic in age and consists principally of argillaceous rocks. It disconformably overlies greenstones of the Triassic Kaslo series about 3 miles to the northeast, and is cut by granitic rocks of the Nelson batholith 5 miles to the southeast.The sedimentary rocks in this area are best referred to on the whole as slates. They lie within the more fissile basal part of the Slocan series. The term 'slate belt' conveniently distinguishes this area of rocks characterized by slaty cleavage from the more massive argillites that are more characteristic of the Slocan as a whole. The contact between the slaty and massive argillites lies ½ mile southwest of the mine."

A NEW LINE of specialists has arisen as a result of the trend toward labor socialization and collectivism in all branches of industry. These men are the ones who will govern the destiny of many companies and the labor policy of our government in coming years. They must be men of integrity and of rather exceptional qualifications; men who can foresee the trend of labor relations with business, and who are willing to sacrifice the immediate fruits of technical training for manual labor and study. They must take their place in industry, not with the idea of following the orthodox line of advancement, but knowing that they must stay at the bottom until they have learned to understand the viewpoints, the work, the advantages and the disadvantages of each classification of labor. They must not be of a radical nature or become easily biased, and they must study. You will say I am looking for a superman and in one sense that is true, but the business man and our government are both in the market even now for this type of man, and with the proper training and background, many of our young technicians can readily enter this field of work.

The influence of different grinding methods on the shape characteristics of magnetite particles was investigated. Also, the effect of particle shape on the flotation of the magnetite, both alone and in the presence of quartz particles, was investigated. The shape characteristics of the magnetite particles were measured and calculated from images obtained by scanning electron microscopy via an image analysis system. The flotation tests were performed using a laboratory flotation cell. Results showed that in the -250+212 µm and -106+75 µm size fractions, ball mill products have a higher elongation value than rod mill products, while in the -150+125 µm size fraction, rod mill products have a higher elongation value. Particles with higher elongation values and lower roundness values have a higher flotation kinetic constant. Furthermore, the influence of magnetite particle shape on flotation is greater, and the flotation kinetic constant is higher, in the presence of quartz particles than in the flotation of magnetite alone Keywords shape, elongation value, flotation kinetics, magnetite.

"Sonar array-based non-invasive flow measurement technology is becoming an accepted and many times a preferred method of measuring challenging single and multi-phase flows in the mineral processing industry. This fundamental sensor and measurement technology has been extended to two developments that provide new measurement capabilities useful for monitoring and managing slurry flows and pipes.The first development is the non-invasive measurement of real-time velocity profile of slurry flow in horizontal pipes. Multiple non-invasive passive sensors measure localized velocities and are combined to provide a velocity profile measurement. This information can be used to determine the approach and onset of solid deposition on the bottom of the pipe. Having this information in real time can enable operation at lower velocities and/or higher solids concentration while avoiding solids deposition or plugging and its associated operational costs.The second development is the non-invasive measurement of pipe wear on slurry lines. Presently, such measurements are made by hand-held portable ultrasonic thickness gages. The numerous shortfalls associated with the manual method are overcome with a set of permanently or semi-permanently installed transducers clamped onto the outside of the pipe. This ring of sensors contains a series of conformable ultrasonic transducers spaced around the circumference, which are used to measure the thickness of the pipe under their respective locations. Compared to manual methods, this system and approach results in better repeatability and accuracy. It also decreases inspection labor costs and pipe access requirements. The minimal accuracy variations in the presence of varying environmental temperatures will be shown. Trending of pipe wall thicknesses in high wear pipelines will be illustrated. The benefits of significantly improved pipe wear monitoring in hydrotransport lines with abrasive solids, and associated improvement in the ability to insure safe operation and avoidance of costly environmental damage due to leaks caused by pipe wear will be discussed."
