Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is engaged in developing, extracting, processing and refining palladium, platinum and associated metals (PGM)from the J-M Reef. This geological formation is located in Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Park counties in southern Montana. Associated byproduct metals include rhodium, gold, silver, nickel and copper. SMC’s current mining operations are near Nye, MT. The company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine, the East Boulder project, about 21 km (13 miles) west of the Nye operations. A 5,650-m (18,550-ft) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore-bearing horizon (J-M Reef).

Com o aumento da exportação do minério de ferro para os mercados asiáticos e consequentes novos parâmetros nas especificações, principalmente granulométricas para o minério com maior grau de pureza, viabilizaram-se importantes mudanças no processo produtivo, como por exemplo, a classificação do minério em sua umidade natural. Os ganhos adquiridos nesta nova condição de processo vão desde o aumento da recuperação mássica (de 90 a 95 para 100%), menor investimento no Capex e Opex, além dos ganhos na área ambiental como a eliminação da água na rota do processo e das barragens de rejeitos com consequente facilidade na obtenção do licenciamento ambiental. Neste artigo apresentamos os detalhes técnicos das condições dinâmicas ideais da peneira vibratória dedicada a esta nova aplicação.

Devido à complexidade dos minérios itabiríticos, sua caracterização é necessária, com ênfase em microestrutura. Muito usado é o microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), com microanalisador químico por dispersão de energia (EDS). Métodos computadorizados/automatizados de análise mineralógica e microestrutural, incluindo a liberação dos minerais, têm sido propostos, usando MEV-EDS. Um desses sistemas analíticos é o MLA (Mineral Liberation Analyser), que usa análise de imagens de elétrons retroespalhados (BSE) e espectros de raios-X (EDS) na identificação dos minerais, em secções polidas de partículas de minérios. Assim, geram-se mapas de composição microestrutural, com informações importantíssimas como liberação, associações minerais e análises modais. Há grande significado estatístico, pois vários milhares de partículas podem ser analisadas. Estudaram-se 4 amostras de minérios de ferro do Quadrilátero Ferrífero, MG, com graus diferentes de complexidade microestrutural. As faixas granulométricas (-0,500+0,300 mm e -0,300+0,212 mm) foram estudadas por difração de raios-X, espectrometria Mössbauer e MLA. Pelos métodos instrumentais, os minerais abundantes foram quartzo e hematita, obviamente; também foram identificados goethita, gibbsita e magnetita, minoritários; em geral, os dados do MLA foram consistentes com esses. O quartzo se encontra liberado em 3 amostras, acima de 90%; a exceção é a amostra APV4 com liberação de 60%, onde o quartzo está associado a hematita (principalmente) e goethita.

"DIGREGORIO, K. A., E. V. CILENTO, AND R. C. LANTZ. A kinetic model of superoxide production from single pulmonary alueolar macrophages. Am. J. Physiol. 256 (Cell Physiol. 25): C405-C412, 1989.-A kinetic model was developed to describe the production of superoxide (02) by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). Model predictions were compared with experimental results obtained from single rat PAM. The 02 was quantified by measuring the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH,) from video-recorded images of individual cells. The kinetic model considered three reactions: 1 ) the production of extracellular 02 from the reduction of oxygen by NADPH oxidase using intracellular NADPH as the substrate, 2) the subsequent dismutation of 02 to form H,O,, and 3) the reaction of 02 and NBT to form diformazan. NBT specificity for 02 was analyzed by comparing results in the presence and absence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) that catalyzes the dismutation of 02 to H,O,. Measured PAM heterogeneity was accounted for by varying the concentration of intracellular NADPH, its rate of depletion, and the concentration of intracellular NADPH oxidase in the kinetic model. Model predictions compared favorably with experimental results except when SOD was present. This discrepancy may be due to diffusional limitations because NBT is a relatively small molecule (818 mo! wt) compared with SOD (34,000 mol wt). In addition, the cell surface is both ruffled and negatively charged, which may introduce steric hindrances and/ or electrostatic effects, since SOD is also negatively charged, whereas NBT is positively charged.PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria. This process is accompanied by the production of superoxide anion (02) at the surface of the plasma membrane (3, 31). Superoxide readily dismutates to form H20 2 and subsequently, other oxygen metabolites which have been shown to be both antibacterial and cytotoxic (21, 25, 35).Superoxide is produced from the reduction of extracellular O, at the surface of the cell membrane by NADPH oxidase by the following reaction (3, 4)"

The use of phosphorus by mankind is long established. From use in agriculture, foods, high tech electronics, and more recently in EV battery cathode production, one cannot escape its impact on today’s society. This paper will review and describe the circular journey of phosphorus through its value chain from the mining operation of phosphate ore through beneficiation into downstream chemicals production and finally into the EV battery cathode production space. This will include a review of phosphoric acid production from phosphate concentrate using wet process route and thermal route. The wet process route discussed will be via dissolution of phosphate concentrate by sulphuric acid. The thermal route will discuss thermal decomposition of phosphate concentrate using submerged arc furnace to produce yellow phosphorus followed by its combustion to produce phosphorus pentoxide and subsequent hydration to produce phosphoric acid. It will also discuss briefly other phosphate derivatives for specialty chemicals and recovery of phosphorus units from wastewater treatment plants, sewage sludge and incinerator ash. Finally, the paper will discuss the use of phosphorus in EV batteries in the form LFP cathode materials and its production. It will also briefly discuss the LFP battery recycle.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o potencial gratifizante de adições de alumínio, em conjunto com inoculante a base de silício, diretamente no fundo do basquete antes do basculamento da panela de metal líquido no basquete da máquina centrífuga, a fim de produzir tubos centrifugados de ferro fundido nodular de matriz majoritariamente ferrítica. Amostras extraídas da ponta e cabeça dos tubos, sem e com distintas adições de alumínio, foram submetidas a tratamentos de recozimento (1050, 1000 e 900ºC), a fim de serem analisadas por meio de análise microestrutural e dureza Brinell. De acordo com os resultados obtidos a incorporação de alumínio ao ferro fundido foi mais efetiva para a incorporação de 1,7% de Al no ferro fundido, permitindo obter um ferro fundido nodular de composição ligeiramente hipereutética, com adequada grafitização e matriz 100% ferrítica, mesmo nas condições testadas com menor temperatura de encharque (900ºC) no recozimento, e com dureza dentro das especificações para a aplicação.

Impact of small projectiles with velocities between 0.9 and 7.3 km per sec on basalt produce craters chiefly by the ejection of fragments. Weight-size distributions of the ejecta are linear for part of the size range of the fragments. Cumulative weight-size distributions of the ejecta from different craters vary because of erratic formation of large fragments and a large percentage of ejecta below 0.1 mm. In the range of velocities studied, the crater depth is approximately proportional to the 0.75 power of velocity of the projectile. This relationship may represent a transition regime between the fluid impact regime and the undeformed projectile impact regime. The volumes per unit of projectile energy of the craters produced are comparable to those reported for lower speed projectile impact and drill bits. An experimental investigation of projectile impact on rock is being conducted jointly by the Ames Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey. Projectiles are launched with light-gas guns at the Ballistics Range of the Ames Research Center. The craters and ejecta produced in these experiments are being studied by the U.S. Geological Survey. Steel, aluminum and polyethylene projectiles weighing from 0.25 to 0.015 g were accelerated to velocities of 0.88 km per sec (2,900 fps) to 7.3 km per sec (24,000 fps) with a light-gas gun, using hydrogen as the propellant medium. Projectiles impacted the targets normal to plane rock surfaces in an atmosphere of air with a nominal pressure of 25 to 50 mm of mercury. The metal projectiles were mounted in supporting four-piece nylon sabots, which guided the projectiles down the launching tube. After launch, aerodynamic drag acted to separate the sabots from the projectiles. Impact velocities were determined with time measurements and spark photographs of the projectiles in flight. Ejecta were collected in lucite and aluminum containers placed around the target block. A small hole in the containers permitted projectile entry. Impact of projectiles of the size employed produced craters in the rock targets chiefly by ejection of fragments. The craters are small, roughly conical depressions with crushed and intensely fractured rock at the bottoms of the depressions. The ejecta are composed of pieces of the projectile and rock fragments ranging in size from a few tenths of a micron or less to several centimeters in maximum dimension. In this paper, the structural features of the craters, the weight-size distributions of the recovered ejecta, and crater depth and crater volume relationships are described. This paper compares response of large urban structures to small charge weight, ultra-high frequency rock blast excitation from contiguous excavation to that of houses to more distant, larger charge weight blasts. Time correlated responses were measured for both structures at the corners, top and bottom of the structures as well as in the foundation rock below the bottom. The comparison allowed the following conclusions: Close-in blasting with direct rock to building wave transmission imposes short wave length excitation which fails to excite the large, massive structures synchronously whereas the more distant blasts do synchronously excite houses. The larger urban structures respond predominantly in wave transmission mode where there is a noticeable difference in time, frequency, phase and amplitude of motions measured at the bottom and top corners of the structure. Excitation motions along the base of the larger urban structures also differs in time, frequency, phase and ampli-tude. The short wave length of the excitation motions leads to attenuation of the peak particle veloc-ity along the base. Ultra-high excitation frequencies, which are much higher than the expected struc-tural natural frequencies, lead to deamplification for all events for the large urban structures.

"This paper investigates the conditions leading to the indefinite termination of production in four critical primary panels at an underground coal mining operation, the observed shortcomings in the mining approach, and the proposed strategy to mine through the affected panels. Initial assessment of the abandoned panel conditions indicated time-dependent strata failure,(i.e. bolted roof failure overrunning intersections), which occurred from mere minutes to up to four weeks post-production, with and without prior warning of failure. This prompted the constant re-supporting of back areas, which raised safety and productivity concerns. Investigation of the initial mining conditions revealed that the failures were due to a critical combination of factors, the chief of which was isolated horizontal stress. Other factors that were initially overlooked by the mine (i.e. influence of hydraulic stress, misinterpretation of borehole data), resulted in the conditions being described as abnormal. Remedial actions were determined, and in so doing, a new strategic approach was formulated to thoroughly address all failure concerns. The four panels were explicitly planned to serve as the main intake and return airways for the recently commissioned secondary ventilation shaft, as well as providing access to millions of tons in proven coal reserves. It is thus imperative to mine the panels. A feasibility study showed that the proposed strategy set for implementation would be financially viable. The need for legislative reform of health and safety legislation has been recognised in New Zealand for about a decade. Previous legislation did not cover all work places, many areas were excluded from coverage, and there were at least 14 different acts and dozens of sets of regulations dealing with various aspects of health and safety.

If one can embrace the medical analogue, much of the mining industry currently suffers from a massive bacterial infection. When pyrite-bearing or sulfide-bearing rock formations, tailings, or mine wastes are infected by Acidithiobacillus ferro-oxidans, the likelihood of forming acid rock drainage (ARD) is almost guaranteed. The ?pharmacy? of antibiotics available is extensive, ranging from solid alkaline amendments like limestone to liquid ?medicines? such as sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium thiocyanate, waste milk, and bipolar lipids. Unfortunately, the ?geo-medical? teams of geochemists, microbiologists, engineers, and mine managers lack the tools to surgically apply these active ingredients where they are needed most with a minimum of waste. Distribution of fine grained limestone on the surface of an acidic mine waste dump is analogous to applying a bandage soaked in antacid to treat an upset stomach. The implementation of up-to-date best management practices has not healed the patient; an equivalent combination of hypodermic needle, cyber knife, and arthroscopic probe is clearly needed. Using an engineered, flow-able or pumpable foam or pHoam? as the medicinally analogous ?dextrose delivery solution? for solid and/or liquid ?geo-antibiotics?, the authors have combined off-the-shelf technologies that have been previously applied in solving geotechnical problems in the mining industry. A patent for the innovative process is pending. This paper discusses method concepts and the advantages it could provide over conventional BMPs.

Closed form solutions assume opening shape to be circular to simplify the calculation of the ground response curve for the design of underground openings. However, in mining and civil engineering works, non-circular openings are commonly excavated. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the ground response curve for such openings. In this respect, a simple model for circular, arch and rectangular shape underground openings subject to a hydrostatic stress field is the aim of this study. A comprehensive numerical modelling, using the finite difference method, based on numerical modelling code FLAC version 4.0, was carried out. In addition to shape of an opening, the effect of rock mass strength, opening size, in situ stress on strain (tunnel deformation to tunnel radius) of the opening in response to applied support pressures was investigated parametrically by developing models for each specific condition. The strain results for each excavation shape obtained from this large number of models against the normalized strength of rock mass and internal support pressure with in situ stress magnitude were evaluated by multiple regression analysis. As a result, a model that was well correlated to data was developed for an overall estimate of the ground response curve depending on relevant effecting parameters. The regression coefficients of the model were given for estimating both roof and sidewall response curve of each excavation shape. The model was verified by statistical tests and by an analytical solution. Diagrams were also established to highlight the influence of relevant parameters and to estimate the support pressure for a stable opening staying within the acceptable limits of strain. Strains occurring in a rectangular opening are found to be larger than those in the arch and circular openings for the other fixed parameters. In the mean time, larger strains occur around an arch shape opening than a circular opening.

During the past five years under contract with the U. S. Bureau of Mines (BOM Contract J0308002). West Virginia University's Mining Extension Service (WVU-MES) has designed, developed) and delivered to the mining industry a comprehensive training program for Mine Rescue (MR) teams and a management planning tool for Mine Emergency Preparedness. The Mine Rescue team program is systematically built on a set of training objectives, backed up by content, allowing mine operators to conduct team training activities. These materials are user-ready, provide the MR principles and practices for both initial and advanced training, and supply teams with exercises geared to problem-solving activities. In addition to an instructor's program guide, the eight (8) modules that comprise the initial (20 hour) MR training are: an Introduction to Mine Rescue, an Introduction to Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), a set of modules covering each approved minimum 2-hour SCBA (i.e.) the Draeger BO 174-A. the McCaa) the Aerolox. & the Scott Rescue-Pak), and a manual on Auxiliary Apparatus as well as the Chemox Auxiliary SCBA. Advanced, annual refresher training (40 hour) is covered by seven (7) modules that spell-out the principles and practices needed to establish surface organization, to handle mine gases as well as mine ventilation, to conduct exploration, for fires, firefighting, and explosions, to rescue survivors and recover bodies, and to accomplish a mine recovery. Approved by MSHA in 1984 to meet requirements for 30 CFO. Part 49, these materials provide a basis for trainers' instruction, for comparison of team capabilities, for modifying programs resources, and services, and for program planning. The Mine Emergency Preparedness Program (MEPP) is used by management as a tool in the preparation of company personnel for handling a mine emergency operation. As a wholly new program. MEPP depends upon development of a Mine Emergency Organization and Emergency Operations Procedures. It also requires regular scheduling of drills) periodic mock emergencies, and evaluation of organizational responses and program performance beyond required training of mine rescue teams. MEPP materials are arranged into three sets of guides: 1) the Preparedness Program System Guides include an Executive Summary, a Program Director's Guide Mine Emergency Organization, and Emergency Operations Procedures; 2) the Emergency Organization (MEO) User's Guides cover the Rescue and Advisory Division, the Technical/Safeguarding Division, and the Surface Support Division; and 3) the Emergency Procedures (EOPS) User's Guides detail Containment Level Procedures, Notification Level Procedures. Mobilization Level Procedures, and Deployment Level Procedures.

Eleven are gelatinous, 56 are the granular type, and four are water-gel explosives, an entirely new type of ammonium nitrate-based explosive for use in coal mines. The list of permissible blasting devices comprises five Cardox models.

The number of major coal-mine explosions occurring annually in the United States is decreasing, due mainly to fuller recognition of explosion hazards in coal mines and knowledge of methods to prevent them, which can be attributed largely to the dissemination of information by the United States Bureau of Mines, State departments of mines, and other coal-mining agencies. Conditions vary considerably from one coal field to another; consequently, outstanding causes of and methods of combatting explosions vary, also. The Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines is making a critical study of coal-mine explosions in the various coal-mining States, and an analysis of the results is published as each study is finished. It is believed that, with completion of the series enough information will be at hand which, if applied, will prevent all coal-mine explosions. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report considers, from a psychological perspective, the perceptual process by which miners recognize and respond to mining hazards. It proposes that if the hazard recognition skills of miners can be improved, mining accidents may be reduced to a significant degree. Prior studies of hazard perception in mining are considered, as are relevant studies from investigations of military target identification, pilot and gunnery officer training, transportation safety, automobile operator behavior, research into sensory functioning and visual information processing. A general model of perception is introduced, and selected concepts from the psychology of perception that are applicable to the detection of mining hazards are reviewed. Hazard recognition is discussed as a function of the perceptual cues available to the miner as well as the cognitive resources and strategies employed by the miner. The development of expertise in responding to hazards is related to individual differences in the experience, aptitude, and personality of the worker. Potential applications to miner safety and training are presented.

"Detonation delay timing has been an important aspect of quality rock blasting for decades. Detonators that enable delay timing have improved over the years especially with the recent advent of precision electronic detonators. The positive effects of precision delay timing have been observed repeatedly in the field with improved fragmentation, heave and overall blast control. Three-dimensional computational capabilities in terms of software, material models and computer speed have recently made possible the computer simulation of multiple blast holes in a bench configuration with precise delay timing between holes. Some of the key physical phenomena enabled by precise delay timing include: 1) collision and interaction of stress waves produced by adjacent blast holes, 2) reinforcement of stress waves from multiple holes as they reflect from the bench face and ground surface, 3) reflection of stress waves from “dynamic free surfaces” created by previously detonating holes, and 4) deformation induced fracturing, cracking and fragmentation. Simulating rock blasting in 3D has shed light on the physics involved and is resulting in an evolution of our understanding of fragmentation mechanisms. Routine use of these 3D computational tools will result in a much better understanding of the complex physics set in motion by the rock blasting process and allow predictionof improved blasting."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated synthetic fluorspars as substitutes for natural fluorspar in basic oxygen steelmaking using a high-temperature rotational viscometer and a quarter-ton basic oxygen furnace (BOF). Consider-able variation in stability and BOF slag fluidizing properties were found when using the initial synthetic products, but improved synthesis methods produced synthetic fluorspars that were generally comparable to natural fluorspar in laboratory testing. Trials in the furnace showed the synthetic products to be operationally the equivalent of natural fluorspar. Higher sulfur and phosphorus contents in some of the synthetic materials did not adversely affect the steel chemistry. Analyses of wet scrubber samples showed evidence that the pelletized synthetic fluorspars experienced greater physical and chemical disintegration than did natural fluorspar. It was also found that operation of a BOF without fluorspar is possible when making low-carbon steels because iron oxide is intrinsically generated as the slag fluidizer.

Tem-se por finalidade a fabricação de um mandril que se adeque à peça forjada e atinja o formato proposto. Através do uso de simulações numéricas computacionais com o software Simufact.forming 12, e simulações com o material modelo plasticina, possíveis geometrias de mandris foram estudadas, variando a angulação na região de troca de diâmetros ao longo do comprimento. Foram estudados ângulos de 0º, 30º e 60º, analisando o comportamento da fluência do material na região.
