"The Zambian copper mining industry as we know it today had its genesis in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production rising to a peak of 769 000 t in 1969, providingover 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 t. An average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000.Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and after more than US$12 billion investment, production levels increased year-on-year to a peak of 763 000 t in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000.This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support for other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings, and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies, and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing. Suggestions are proposed on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

The importance of Somerset County, Pa., as a coal producer is due in large measure to the presence reserves of low-volatile bituminous coals. Although many coal beds of minable thickness are present, the important reserves are to be found in those beds underlying the Pittsburgh bed. The Kittenning beds and Freeport beds, which are responsible for the bulk of the present coal production in Somerset County and contain the largest reserves to meet future coal requirements, are usually thin and entirely free from impurities. The Pittsburgh bed, which has been such an important coal deposit in the coal areas immediately west and south of Somerset County, is of secondary importance in this county. Although generally rather friable, Somerset County coals have enjoyed wide receptability as excellent coals and to some extent have been utilized in the metallurgical market.

The Tennessee Copper Co. operated two mines in the Ducktown district during 1928. The Burra Burra mine is much the larger operation and is the chief source of the ore smelted and treated in the, company's smelter and acid plant rat Copperhill, 4.5 miles from Ducktown. This mine operates steadily and furnishes a regular output of about 40,000 tons per month. The Eureka mine is operated irregularly and produces a much smaller tonnage of high-sulphur ore the rate of output depending upon the demand for sulphur. During 1928 about 60 per cent of the combined output of these mines was shipped directly to the smelter, and the balance was concentrated before shipment in the flotation plant located near the mines. "A study conducted at 22 operating mines in the southern African region indicated that each mine employs about five management and improvement methods with roots in the manufacturing industry. All respondents reported the implementation of cost-saving initiatives, whereas 80% of the mines are affected by restructuring. TQM, Six Sigma, BPM, and TOC were found to be the most prevalent manufacturing management and improvement methods used. A mechanistic vs systemic evaluation of the suitability of these methods to bring about positive change in the industry suggested that complex, ever-changing mining systems are better served by a systemic flow-based approach, which is embedded in methods such as TOC, JIT, TPS, and Lean Production. These methods, however, lack industry presence, possibly because they do not effectively deal with the unique challenges associated with the mining environment. It is argued that successful mining business management and improvement depends on management’s ability to deal effectively with mining industry-specific requirements, the integration of the geologymining- plant system, and the implementation of systemic flow-based principles in all aspects of mining. IntroductionThe study aims to explore the use of manufacturing management and improvement methodologies in the southern African mining industry. Considering the unique challenges associated with mining operations, attention is given to the applicability of the most commonly used manufacturing methodologies in the tactical, operational, and strategic environments. "Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices and currencies expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades. Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit, not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill. Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times. This paper explores: the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process; and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included. Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers."

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd nominated Sunrise Dam Gold Mine as a case study via their involvement with the long-running Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) International P9P research program (AMIRA, 2015) . A group of researchers from the Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC) conducted a comminution circuit survey and review together with a large group of graduate metallurgists, senior metallurgists and operators. Fundamental and applied research understanding was used to identify productivity and efficiency improvements around the crushing and grinding circuits. The limitations of current scientific knowledge were identified through this process and this will allow future research to be more focussed on what is required by industry.The comminution circuit at Sunrise Dam comprises three stages of crushing followed by two stages of ball milling. The secondary crusher and primary ball mill classification were identified as the primary limitations of the circuit. The secondary crusher was found to be underperforming through overall equipment efficiency (OEE) analysis and an improved chamber design was identified by Chalmers University. This improved design will promote higher power utilisation, choke feeding and a finer crushed product for the milling circuit. The primary ball mill product is classified by a combination of a trommel, 3 sieve bends and a hydrocyclone. The combination of poor classification and coarse, competent feed led to a situation where the primary mill was overfilled with rocks, reducing grinding rate due to cushioning of impact. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating chemical and biological decontamination of complex wastewaters such as tailings pond water containing 280 ppm CN and 5 ppm Se as well as significant concentrations of arsenic, copper, iron, silver, and zinc. The most effective chemical procedure involves cyanide oxidation using hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite followed by selenium reduction using ferrous hydroxide. The effluent contains ?1 ppm CN and 20 ppb Se; concentrations of other - major contaminants meet National Drinking Water Standards. Preliminary research indicates that biological cyanide oxidation is possible even in highly alkaline solutions (pH 10.5) containing high cyanide concentrations; indigenous bacteria destroyed 85% of the cyanide. Exploratory research shows that other bacteria removed up to 79% of the selenium from chemically oxidized, low- cyanide water. These promising results may lead to a final processing scheme that involves a combination of chemical and biological techniques.

O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar a viabilidade do emprego do resíduo sólido industrial proveniente da fabricação do papel na produção de blocos de resíduo-cimento. Foi utilizado o resíduo gerado pela Companhia Paduana de Papeis – COPAPA. Esta empresa, situada no município de Santo Antônio de Pádua e responsável por produzir 36.000 toneladas de papeis por ano, gera cerca de 13.320 ton/ano de resíduo, que hoje não tem um destino adequado. De acordo com esta demanda, surge à necessidade do estudo de incorporação do resíduo proveniente da indústria de papel. Foram confeccionados blocos com diferentes proporções de resíduo e cimento e realizados ensaios de resistência à compressão, absorção de água e durabilidade por ciclos de molhagem e secagem para cada um dos traços e diferentes tempos de cura. Com os resultados obtidos, verificou-se a viabilidade do uso do resíduo para produção dos blocos.

Filtration using Ceramic Foam Filters (CFFs) is a method widely used to separate inclusions from molten aluminium. In the present work, the specific permeability and form drag coefficients of nominal 50 mm thick commercial Al2O3- based CFFs, of grades 30, 50, 65 and 80, have been calculated from pressure drop experiments using high (60–500 mm s−1) and low (0.2–10 mm s−1) water velocities. Moreover, 2D axial symmetric Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) models have been developed, using COMSOL Multiphysics® to validate the experimental results. The empirically obtained values were defined as global parameters used to model the pressure, as well as the velocity fields in the water pipes and in the CFFs. The modelled pressure drop over the filter thickness for the high water velocity experiments showed < ± 1% deviation from the corresponding experimental results for all CFF grades. Moreover, the developed model also showed good agreement with the experimental results obtained from the low water velocity experiments, where the deviation of the pressure drop for the CFF samples of grade 30, 50 and 65 were ≤ ± 4.6% and for CFF samples of grade 80 ≤ ± 13.4%.

In order to better understand the effects of longwall mining on the methane reservoir overlying the panel, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH/PRL) designed and implemented a vertical borehole monitoring experiment (BME) on an active longwall panel. The mine operates in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Greene County, Pennsylvania. The BME site was located away from either end of the panel to avoid mechanical influences caused by the draping of overburden in this region and was positioned at the same distance from the tailgate gateroad as the mine?s gob gas venthole sites. The borehole drilling depths and monitoring intervals were chosen to address a different stratigraphic zone in each of the three planned holes. The monitoring boreholes were positioned perpendicular to face advance using a close spacing pattern of about 15 m (50 ft) between collars. Boreholes were instrumented downhole and on the surface for various measurements. It was observed from the field data that the gob gas venthole fracture network formed 24-46 m (80-150 ft) ahead of the mining face. Overburden permeability?s within the same test zones increased 100 to 500 times following undermining. The borehole test interval within the fractured rock responded to overburden gas pressure while the test interval in the caved zone responded to mine ventilation conditions. Eight months after the boreholes were undermined, slug testing indicated permeabilities had increased further in the fractured rock zone. Measurements of surface movement indicate that the permeability development observed in the boreholes is a product of vertical subsidence without lateral movement within the tensional rock mechanics zone on a supercritical longwall panel. Results from this study suggest that maximum permeability in the longwall panel overburden is achieved 58 to 190 m (190 to 620 ft) behind the longwall following maximum compaction of the overburden.

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the &quot;two flow drawdown&quot; technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engines in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. This bibliography, therefore, is a compilation of references from interdisciplinary sources pertaining to diesels and related areas. Face and pillar bursts, bumps and bounces are violent failures that occur in underground coal mines in response to a complicated interplay of face and pillar geometry, seam depth, coal strength and moduli and interactions between roof, seam and floor strata. Additional complications arise from the presence of gas, mainly methane, and associated pressure and flow that vary with time and are further influenced by the rate of face advance. Numerical models provide a means of quantitatively accounting for the various complications of mining geometry, the stratigraphic column, mechanical properties, gas flow properties and associated interactions. A fully coupled hydromechanical finiteelement code, utAH4, serves the purpose well and allows study of the important interaction between stress concentration and gas pressure in determining safety and stability of the face during the advance of a longwall panel in a deep underground coal mine in central Utah. Face advance is relatively fast compared with gas flow and depressurization in coal seams of low gas permeability. Consequently, gas pressure is high at the face. When a longwall is stationary, depressurization occurs at the face, so effective stress and strength increase. thus, when gas flow at the face is high and requires a pause in face advance to bring gas concentration to an acceptable level, a second benefit occurs because of timely depressurization. However, quantitative analysis of a deep coal mine shows that regardless of gas pressure, high stress concentration is more likely to pose a threat to face and pillar wall stability.

ABSTRACT: The paper describes the characterisation studies of Tectonised Clay Shales at laboratory and in situ scale. The interest relates to tunnelling under squeezing and swelling conditions, in Italy, along the Apennines. The results of monitoring during full face excavation are presented in conjunction with numerical modelling. RESUME: Cet article présente la caractérisation, à l&apos;échelle du laboratoire et in situ, des Argiles Chaotiques. L&apos;attention est portée sur le creusement, dans ces milieux gonflants, des tunnels, dans les zones montagneuses des Appennini, en Italie. Enfin, on présentera les résultats de la modélisation numérique et la comparaison de ces derniers avec les mesures effectuées in situ. KURZFASSUNG: Die Arbeit beschreibt die Charakterisierungsstudien von tektonisierten Schiefertonen, sowohl im Labor als auch vor Ort. Das Interesse gilt dem Tunnelbau unter Quetsch- und Schwellbedingungen in Italien entlang der Apenninen. Die Überwachungsergebnisse des ganzflächigen Ausbruchs werden mit numerischen Modellen präsentiert.

The energy transferred from a hammer to the pile top is considered as the effective energy in this paper. The effective energy is related to the pile dimensions, soil and pile-soil interface properties. This relation may be expressed as an equation based on the dimensionless theory. The relationship between pile capacity and effective energy was studied by performing a series of wave equation analyses using a commercial software called GRLWEAP (Wave Equation Analysis Program) by GRL Engineers, Inc. The results show that the pile capacity increases with the blow count when the effective energy is constant, however, it has a little change as the blow count is over 100 blows per foot. The pile capacity decreases as the ratio of pile penetration depth to pile diameter increases if the effective energy is constant. The pile capacity will increase as the pile diameter and wall thickness increases if the effective energy is constant. The pile stickout (pile length above the ground surface) does not have a significant effect on the effective energy and may be neglected. Curves for pile capacity versus effective energy are presented to be used for preliminary hammer selection according to effective energy and hammer efficiency. Finally, a case from PDA testing was studied. Measurements of the effective energy and pile capacity by CAPWAP were presented and compared with the results by GRLWEAP.

Ao longo dos testes foram utilizados: cavaco de eucalipto, chip de pneu e moinha de carvão vegetal. Os testes foram realizados com sucesso, apresentando oportunidades de substituição do coque usado atualmente por combustíveis alternativos, com potencial de ganho financeiro para VMZ JF. Este potencial precisa ser validado em testes em escala industrial.

Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials; and fourth, mention of laws regulating offshore operations. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of states or provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

One of the primary goals of Bureau of Mines research is to reduce the cost of coal mining by improving the efficiency of longwall supports. One method of achieving this goal is the optimization of stress distribution within the support structure, resulting in a lower overall weight, more fully stressed shield. However, before stress optimization can be initiated, load conditions must be defined that cause maximum stress in the various support components. A finite-element model of a longwall shield was used to identify these critical load conditions. These load conditions were then evaluated in the Bureau&apos;s mine roof simulator (MRS) by instrumentation of a longwall shield and measurement of strains in each of the shield components. The critical (canopy-base contact) load conditions were identified that can cause structural failure at less than rated shield (hydraulic yield) capacity. Comparisons were made between full-contact and partial-contact load conditions. Other parameters investigated included the stiffness of the contact material, changes in shield geometry, rate of load application, and effects of horizontal constraint. Conclusions were drawn regarding the structural integrity of the major shield components and potential for stress optimization.

Accurate measurements of physical dimensions of a section of stainless steel capillary tubing are presented and used to develop two final working equations for an absolute gas viscosimeter. The effects of pressure and temperature on these dimensions are considered. The internal surface finish and nonuniformity of the capillary bore are discussed, as well as entrance, kinetic energy, gas slippage, and gas compressibility correction factors.
