The start-up is the most critical phase of the cell life, as an uncontrolled start-up could lead to early infiltrations, instabilities, and in some cases to the cell death. Lots of efforts are put to increase the lifespan of cells, as it has a major impact on both the operating costs and the environmental footprint of the aluminum industry. Obviously, a true size test on a cell is a resources- and time-consuming approach that could be used only to validate mature concepts. Moreover, numerical modelling is a low-cost and versatile tool capable to test a wide range of potential ideas and concepts. In the present article, a thermal electrical mechanical slice model is presented. This model describes the preheating and bath periods of a P155 aluminum cell start-up, as used at the Grande Baie smelter. The impact of sodium diffusion and expansion is also included in the model. This model will be useful to study different problematical issues such as the global behaviour of lining materials, shell and cradle deformations during start-up and several start-up scenarios. Such a model will also be able to answer some interrogations regarding early infiltrations and their impact on the lifespan of the electrolysis cell.

Electroplating is a widely utilized but little understood process. The fact that the average person is in contact with dozens of plated items daily without even being aware that they are electroplated is evidence of the success of the process. Although a complete explanation of electrodeposition involves thermodynamics and modern theories of bonding and catalytic reactions, in its simplest form the process conforms to the following description. A metal salt dissolved in water partially dissociates into negatively charged and positively charged ions. In the case of nickel sulfate dissolved in water, for example, a portion of the salt dissociates into positively charged nickel ions and negatively charged sulfate ions. If an electrical potential is applied between two electrodes in this solution, the nickel ions migrate toward the cathode and the sulfate ions toward the anode. The negatively charged cathode has a high concentration of electrons, which combine with the positively charged metal ions to form neutral metal atoms with a stable electron configuration. These insoluble atoms thus form a deposit on the cathode.

This paper outlines the contributing factors to a series of erroneous Mineral Resource estimates which led to considerable loss, including significant reduction of mine life and consequently a large write-down of asset value. The error prompted divestment of the mineral asset in the short-term by the owners, a major mining company. There were multiple and complex contributions to the result: • The mine was undergoing a transition in the deposit geology with increasing depth that was not accommodated in the models. Early indications of the geological transition in initial drilling were generally unrecognised in resource modelling. The shortcomings of the models became apparent with increasing infill drilling and subsequent production reconciliation. • There was a lack of recognition of, and confidence in, site-based input and skills by corporate technical management. The site had a reputation internally for over-delivery to plan early in its life and that supported the anticipation of ongoing metal delivery into the mine plan by management. • A corporate lack of confidence in site being able to adequately domain the mineralisation led to the use of a CIK domaining process, rather than one which was geologically based. This domaining process led to gross over-statement of mineralisation trends reflected in the subsequent OK estimate. • Timelines on the outsourced estimation process were so short that validation was not possible. Obvious errors in the estimate versus data were not able to be used to correct the issues and the site’s Competent Person sign-off occurred without adequate checks. This case study is presented to reinforce the concept that Mineral Resource estimates are not solely based on the ability of the Competent Person to satisfactorily guide the process. There are usually multiple complex issues in the estimation process which need to be recognised and considered in judging reconciliations of model to actual.

The dynamic pore collapse mechanisms and energy absorption capacity of closed-cell aluminium foams subjected to low velocity impacts have been investigated. Impact experiments were carried out using an instrumented drop-tower with two impactor geometries: a 50 mm square flat steel impactor to investigate pore collapse mechanisms and a 20 mm diameter hemispherical steel impactortostudy indentation resistance.X-ray computedtomography was utilized to generate views of the deformation field within the impacted specimen. The results show that the strain rate and incident impact energy influence the energy absorption capacities of closed-cell aluminium foams. Furthermore, damage initiation, propagation and cell collapse mechanisms under drop weight impact have been elucidated.

THE deformation textures of metals have been extensively studied because of both the practical implications in metal fabrication and the fundamental insight into the behavior of the metal during deformation. Most studies have been concerned with pure metals or solid-solution alloys and relatively little attention has been directed toward more complex alloy systems. Barrett' and Brick2 have summarized work on multiphase systems in terms of the relative ease of deformation of the phases. Thus, if the phases are deformed about equally, each develops its usual texture for the particular fabrication process. This behavior has been reported for Ag-Cu and Cd-Zn alloys3 and 62-38 brass.4 A dispersion of hard particles in a softer matrix interferes with the normal reorientation of the matrix lattice during deformation, thus distorting the texture or in some cases preventing its development. Increasing the amount of carbon in steel has been observed to increase the randomness of the ferrite5 and almost random textures have been reported for A1-12 pct Si eutectic alloy wires.6 It has also been noted that if the second phase is platelike, deformation causes the platelets to line up in a common direction. The present work concerns a quantitative study of the deformation textures in aluminum-uranium alloys containing 5 or 13 wt pct U. Alloys in this composition range are characterized by a pure aluminum matrix in which the intermetallic compound UA14, is dispersed. From a fundamental standpoint, this system affords the opportunity for studying the effects of a dispersed phase on texture development in an essentially pure metal matrix. Further, these alloys are commonly used as fuels for nuclear research and testing reactors, and a knowledge of the preferred orientation may be useful in evaluating physical and mechanical properties as well as response to fabrication. The deformation textures in sheets of aluminum (99.996 pct), Al-5 pct U alloy, and Al-13 pct U alloy were determined for reductions in thickness of 90 pct by cold rolling. The texture in an alloy rod of the latter composition which had been extruded at 455°C was also determined. It can be readily ascertained from the aluminum-uranium phase diagram that the 5 pct U alloy is hypoeutectic and contains 7.3 wt pct (3.4 vol. pct) UAl4. The 13 pct U alloy has the eutectic composition and contains 18.9 wt pct (9.4 vol. pct) UAl,; however, because of nonequilibrium solidification conditions, the typical eutectic microstructure was not developed. The alloys were prepared by open-air melting in graphite crucibles. The slab castings were cropped and cold reduced 90 pct in thickness on a two-high mill. The slabs were reversed after each pass. Although the uranium-bearing alloys exhibited edge cracking, they could be cold rolled to the desired thickness. Small coupons 1.5 by 0.75 by 0.1 in. thick were sheared from the center of the rolled plate with a major axis parallel to the rolling direction. To obtain a specimen of sufficient thickness for machining of the X-ray diffraction specimen, three coupons were laminated into a single three-ply sandwich with a suitable adhesive. Adhesives which could be cured at room temperatures were selected in order to prevent recrystallization during bonding. Bondmaster M-648 (Rubber and Asbestos Corp.) was used for the pure aluminum laminate and Armstrong A-6 (Armstrong Products Co.) was used for the alloys. The alloy for extrusion was cast in a cylindrical graphite mold! cropped and machined into a 3-in. diam by 4-in. long billet. This billet was preheated to 455°C, upset to 3.125 in. diam, and extruded on a 700-ton hydraulic press at a speed of 6 fpm through a flat-face, 1-in. diam die. The rod was quenched with a water spray as it emerged from the die. One of the main factors that reduce strip cleanliness are iron fines, which are formed due to the abrasive interactions of the roll surface and the strip in the roll bite during cold rolling. They can cause a problem in fouling of the cold rolling mill as well as downstream processes. It has been repeatedly observed that chrome plating the work roll improves strip cleanliness. In the present work, scratch tests and reciprocating sliding tests were carried out under lubricated conditions to explore the influence of chrome plating on iron fines formation. Scratch tests were conducted to study the influence of chrome plating on iron fines formation at single asperity scale due to its intrinsic property. Reciprocating sliding tests were performed to study the influence of chrome plating a rough surface on iron fines formation, taking into account the initial roughness. The scratches made using chrome plated pins showed lower friction, generated less iron fines and exhibited lower material transfer. Reciprocating sliding tests done using the uncoated pins showed galling at different sliding distances depending on the roughness of the pin. On the contrary, reciprocating sliding tests with the chrome plated pins exhibited no galling irrespective of the roughness.

The mining regulations of all 50 States were reviewed by the Bureau of Mines, and those parts pertaining to the use of internal combustion (IC) engines (particularly diesel engines) in underground mines or confined spaces were extracted. Also extracted were subjects associated with the use of IC engines; for example, storage and handling of flammable liquids, maintenance, and ventilation requirements. As the laws now stand, 29 States have specific regulations that affect the operation of diesel engines in underground coal and/or metal and nonmetal mines. The other States have no regulations because either they have no mining activities or they defer to Federal regulations. Six states have regulations expressly prohibiting the use of diesels in underground coal mines. Specific contacts (addresses and phone numbers) precede each State's regulations to facilitate inquiries about regulation revisions and interpretation.

"Mine water generated from underground coal mining operations contains both dissolved and particulate solids. Dissolved solids primarily consist of sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorides and sulfates. When discharged to a receiving stream without treatment, these constituents create a potentially toxic environment for aquatic life.A case study is presented to discuss how a centralized treatment plant treats mine water from six locations to meet discharge limitations for chlorides. Located in West Virginia, this facility consistently achieves less than the National Pollutant Discharge Elemenation System (NPDES) permit limitation of 218 mg/L chlorides in the discharge while generating almost zero liquid waste. The dissolved solids concentration in the influent ranges between 5,000 and 10,000 mg/L, with chloride concentrations of 1,000 to 2,000 mg/L and sulfate concentrations of 2,000 to 6,000 mg/L.The mine water is treated using advanced treatment technology to produce clean water for discharge or reuse. The treatment process comprises aeration, softening, filtration, reverse osmosis (RO) reject softening, evaporation, crystallization, final effluent remineralization and sludge dewatering. The solid waste generated in the treatment process is landfilled on site. The leachate is sent back to the facility’s thermal treatment process. Because no liquid waste leaves the property, this plant is termed a zero liquid waste (ZLW) facility.The advanced water treatment system was built to meet a new 218 mg/L regulatory limitation imposed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for chlorides discharged to surface waters. The system is designed to treat a maximum flow of approximately 795 m3/h (5 million gpd) of mine water. The treatment process utilizes RO membrane treatment to achieve the effluent criteria, and evaporation and crystallization technology to manage the RO concentrate from the water treatment process. As a result, the system produces clean water for discharge while generating zero liquid waste. The effluent water can be used for industrial purposes or discharged to a receiving stream. A water impact index (WIIx) study indicated that discharge of this high-quality water into the Monongahela River watershed may improve the water quality for downstream water users. The waste produced in the treatment process, including softening sludge and salt, is disposed of in an onsite landfill. Currently, the plant is treating at an average flow of 490 m3/h (3.1 million gpd) of mine water with an average influent chloride concentration of 1,530 mg/L and an average effluent chloride concentration of 11 mg/L."

This paper sets forth the mode of ore occurrence, characteristics of ore and country rocks, methods of exploration, development, and. ore extraction, and the costs of underground operation at No. 8 mine of the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Works of the National Lead Co. located near the southern extremity of the Southeast Missouri lead district. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. T. Campbell, geologist, in the preparation of the paragraphs on the geology of the ores. HISTORY The first record of mining in St. Francois County, Mo., concerns more or less shallow semisurface "diggings" which were worked about the year 174-2. In 1864, however, the discovery of the disseminated deposits, the present source of lead, was made on property near the town of Bone Terre. Winslow has estimated the lead-ore production in this county prior to 1869 to be 59,526 tons.3

The oxide phases that form at different times depend on the degree to which the surface metal has become depleted, in manganese by preferential oxidation. PREVIOUS work has demonstrated that the oxide scales formed on chromium steels at high temperature consist of both spinel and rhombohedra1 phases and may contain considerably more manganese, especially in the spinel phase, than is present initially in the alloy.' It has further been observed that a binary Fe-26 Cr alloy scaled less rapidly than an equivalent commercial steel and formed no spinel.' However, it is not established if manganese in chromium alloys actually promotes formation of spinel nor if it affects oxidation resistance. It seemed expedient to try to evaluate the specific effect of manganese by oxidizing an Fe-26 Cr alloy containing a small manganese addition under the same experimental conditions as used for the manganese-free alloy.' EXPERIMENTAL Table I shows the composition in weight percent of the Fe-26 Cr-1 Mn alloy and of the Fe-26 Cr alloy used as reference. The alloy with manganese was prepared from the vacuum-melted Fe-26 Cr alloy by remelting in vacuum with the proper manganese addition. The ingot was rolled to strip and specimens 1.1 by 0.035 by 5 cm and 1.1 by 0.5 by 4 cm cut out or machined. As previously described2 the specimens were smoothed by abrading through 600-grit Sic paper, electropolished in acetic-perchloric acid (20 to 1) to remove 10 p of metal, annealed at 1100°C in 20 torr of purified argon, and electropolished to remove a further 10 p of metal. They were then either rinsed in water and methanol and blotted dry or immediately etched for 45 sec in deoxy-genated 4 N HC1 under cathodic polarization at 10 pa per sq cm. Oxidation runs were carried out in a vertical tube furnace in a flow of purified oxygen at 1 atm while the weight increase was recorded continuously on a* automatic balance.3 Alter 98 hr at 870.C or 20 hr at 1090"C the specimens were removed to flowing argon and observed microscopically for evidence of spalling as they cooled. Subsequently they were examined by X-ray diffraction, the oxides analyzed chemically, and metallographic cross settions prepared. RESULTS Figs. 1 and 2 show the oxidation curves of Fe-26 Cr-1 Mn at 870' and 1090C. The Fe-26 Cr reference runs are shown as dashed curves. Experimental details of the six runs are included in Table 11. The first 20 hr of run 1 is repeated in Fig. 2 to show the effect of temperature. In order to comply with the latest European Highway Standards, the highway Salerno - Reggio Calabria, in southern Italy, had do be widened and upgraded to reduce its vulnerability to earthquakes. Reinforced concrete viaducts, no longer needed for the new road, had to be demolished. Many bridges still to be used for the highway required refurbishment due to 50 years of wind, frost and salt corrosion. This re-furbishment and new construction had to be carried out simultaneously. To keep the highway open dur-ing the renewal process, all traffic was directed to one side of the road. Demolition was conducted ex-tremely close to operational roadways and viaducts, as close as only 2 cm (0.8 in). Care had to be taken to ensure that the stresses (vibration levels), resulting from the demolished pylons and decks hitting the ground, were below the no-damage thresholds for the nearby acceptors (structures receiving the vibra-tion stresses). These structures included bridges, houses and buried pipelines (water, oil and gas). In some cases, care also had to be taken to preserve the existing pylons supporting decks that were being demolished; since the same pylons were going to be used for the new viaducts (bridges). New continu-ous decks in weathering steel replaced the old reinforced concrete decks.

The Eastern Magnesia Talc Company has always had the problem of adequate storage at its various mines and mills of not only crude ore and finished product but also material in process. An opportunity arose a couple of years ago with the decision to build a new mill at West Windsor, Vermont, (Figure 1) to come as close to providing adequate space for ore and the ground talc in the new plant as money and judgement would allow. Since our engineering staff did not have the time to design and engineer the new facility, an architectural firm with complete engineering staff was retained. Our original thought was to contract all phases of the construction and installation, however, and I think this is a most important point for any small firm such as ours, we found that with good supervision we, as the contractor, could do the job faster and at a lower cost than the construction firms that bid on the work. For some 50 odd years Italian talc has had a virtual monopoly in the body powder area of the cosmetic industry. Due to the purity, superior lubricity and whiteness, naturally occurring in the talc from Italy, no talc in the Western Hemisphere could capture any but a very small part of the market. When the Italian supply was cut off during World War II, the United States' largest consumer of this talc decided that it was time to develop a domestic source of a satisfactory replacement.

The Bureau of Mines designed and constructed a series of calibration models for geophysical borehole logging. A nominal hole diameter of 3 inches was selected as representative of typical core holes drilled for mining and engineering purposes, although additional hole diameters of 2, 5, and 8 inches are provided in one of the models for determination of empirical correction factors for variations in hole diameter. The physical properties of the models were determined by laboratory analyses of drill core samples and evaluated statistically for reliability. This report outlines the location of the models, elements of design and construction, and results of the laboratory tests. The models are available at the Denver Federal Center, Denver, Colo., for use by Government agencies and private industry to calibrate logging equipment for measurements of density, sonic velocity, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity.

The direct dissolution of a typical zinc sulfide flotation concentrate by elevated temperature and pressure leaching was investigated. The concentrate assayed about 55 percent Zn, 32 percent S, 6 percent Fe, and 1 percent Pb and contained minor quantities of copper and precious metals. The influence of various factors on the dissolution of the zinc in acidic and ammoniacal pulps when using oxygen as the oxidant was determined. The tests revealed that the sphalerite was difficult to oxidize. Complete dissolution of the mineral required vigorous and intimate nixing of the gaseous, liquid, and sold phases. The addition of pyrite or sulfuric acid to water slurries of the concentrate was required to obtain a high zinc extraction when leaching under acidic conditions. The quantity of pyrite and acid used was about 0.125 and 0.25 pound, respectively, per pound of zinc sulfide contained in the leach charge. In tests with acid, about 96 percent of the zinc was extracted from the concentrate in 1 hour at 200° C. when the oxygen partial pressure was 75 pounds per square inch gage or higher. Leaching with a continuous flow of air as the oxidant gave results that were almost as good as those obtained when oxygen was used, In tests with air fed through the autoclave at 320 liters per hour, 95 percent of the zinc was dissolved in 1 hour, Acid leach solutions assaying approximately 58 grams Zn per liter and containing Fe, Ni, Cr, and Cu impurities were produced in the better tests. The leached residue consisted essentially of red iron oxide together with substantially all of the lead and precious metals.

Current analytical models can accurately predict the final velocity of explosively driven flyers and can somewhat predict the acceleration profile, but do little to address the deformation of the flyers. Explosive systems such as linear shaped charges and explosively formed projectiles, which can be described as multiple interacting explosively driven flyers, often involve interactions between the flyers that occur much before the flyers reach their predicted final velocity. In this regime, it is important to accurately understand both the acceleration profile and the deformation profile of the flyers, as both significantly affect the functioning of the explosive systems. Previous work proposed an analytical model to meet this need. As the expanding gas cloud of detonation products drives the flyers, rarefactions impinge upon the gas cloud from around the flyer edges, which produces a pressure difference across the back face of the flyer leading to deformation of the flyer. Previous research condensed the effects of the rarefactions into a single term, the pressure release ratio, ?, which was calculated based on hydrocode simulations of a block of explosive only and an assumption of isentropic expansion. This work intends to determine the value of ? for different explosive compounds. The results of this analysis were compared to hydrocode simulations of an open-faced sandwich configuration explosive/flyer system with an average accuracy of 15% across the tested compounds.

The straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have been synthesized on Si wafer by thermal chemical evaporation of mixed powders of silica and graphite at 1300_ and condensation on Si substrate without assistance of any catalyst. The synthesized samples were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The results suggested that the straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have uniform diameter about 50-200nm and neat smooth surface. The growth of such silica nanorods may be a result of the fluctuation of external conditions and internal structure faults causing a change in the growth direction of silica nanorods developed.

The deformation and fracture characteristics of lithium-fluoride single crystals stressed in compression at room temperature have been studied. In as-cleaved specimens the stress-strain curves were variable; two types of {110} fractures were observed in the vicinity of kink bands. The stress-strain curves of annealed crystals were reproducible; {100} cracks formed which propagated along the (100) and (110) planes. The deformation and fracture characteristics were affected by quenching and X-ray irradiation. STUDY of the mechanical behavior of nonmetallic materials has received considerable impetus in recent years because of the need to overcome the problem of brittleness before the refractory properties of nonmetallics can be fully exploited. Ionic crystals provide a convenient and simplified starting point from which to study the deformation and fracture processes in nonmetallic materials. Early investigations of the mechanical behavior of non-metals were restricted largely to determinations of the crystallographic indices of the cleavage and fracture planes and the glide and twinning elements. Until recently, only occasional systematic studies of the deformation characteristics of non-metals have been made; and investigations of the forces necessary to initiate plastic deformation and the factors which affect the flow characteristics have been restricted largely to studies of sodium chloride'-7 , magnesium oxides-l3 and lithium fluoride. 14-22 Fracture studies on alkali halide and metal oxide single crystals have been limited despite the fact that these materials have a number of advantages for fracture studies. Because they are transparent, the cracks which form can be viewed in three dimensions instead of in two dimensions as in metals. Also, they exhibit stress birefringence under polarized illumination, which enables the internal stress pattern and, therefore, the distribution of dislocations to be examined in the vicinity of the fracture. Early workers1-4 have shown that ionic crystals with a cubic structure fracture in tension along the (100) plane normal to the applied stress. These fractures were brittle at room temperature and propagated very rapidly across the cross section of the crystal. More recently, Stokes, Johnston, and Lil0 have studied crack formation in compressed magnesium-oxide single crystals. They found that the cracks, which were observed after about 3 pct strain, formed in the region of a kink band and lay on conjugate (110) slip planes instead of the usual(100) cleavage plane. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the domestic primary and secondary lead smelting and refining industries to determine the economic impacts of existing and proposed environmental, health, and safety regulations. The impacts are assessed in terms of capital and operating costs for existing and alternative smelting/ refining technologies. Industry response to regulatory implementation is estimated and quantified in terms of import value from lost lead production. For the primary lead industry, regulatory compliance may add up to 1.15 ¢/lb refined lead to operating cost for rehabilitated plants. Alternative smelting/refining methods could reduce net operating costs by as much as 4.36 ¢/lb refined lead. Capital expenditures would vary from $750 to $1,000 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Secondary lead smelter operating costs would increase about 3.8 ¢/lb refined lead to comply with existing regulations. Capital expenditures would average about $124 per annual mt of smelter capacity. Implementation and enforcement of proposed regulations would result in closure of the primary lead industry and additional expenditures for compliance by the secondary lead industry. Enforcement of the most extreme proposed regulations would force the secondary lead industry to close.
