Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation (CDE) is a precious metals mining company. The company's three mining operations are located In Nevada and Idaho. Collectively, these mines (Rochester in Nevada, and the Galena and Coeur In Idaho) produced about 61,000 ounces of gold and more than 7.5 million ounces of silver in 1991. The company is currently planning the development of two major properties; the Fachinal gold-silver project in Chile and the Kensington gold project near Juneau, Alaska. Fachinal and Kensington hold encouraging potential to significantly expand CDE's gold production during this decade. The permitting process for these two distinctly contrasting environmental settings, project design requirements and regulatory/political circumstances provide the basis for a comparative analysis of licensing and permitting requirements, timeliness of the permitting process and costs in the U.S. and Chile.

In keeping with past custom, it is the purpose of this publication to bring up to date previously published lists of equipment that meets safety standards of the bureau of Mines so that the mining industry may be informed as to the development and availability of equipment that can be used safely. The present lists supplement those in Bulletin 543. Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953; Information Circular 7722, Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54; and Information Circular [40], Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1955-56. These [ew] lists also contain equipment meeting those standards revised since the last listing. A revision of Schedule 16C (now Schedule 16D4/) was officially approved on September 28. 1958. Schedule 29 was another standard revised in 1958. The revision was officially approved on September 8. 1958, and is known as Schedule 29A5/ .

During the last few years there has been a rapid increase in the development of the community or junior college throughout the United States, Some factors behind this development include the need for more college facilities to service the growing number of high school graduates, the desire of the public to provide some post high school education at reasonable costs, and the need to provide post high school educational opportunities not now provided by most of the universities and colleges. Many of the new community colleges provide at least three educational services including local opportunity to provide the first two years of a four year college program, two year technical-vocational programs of a terminal nature, and adult educational opportunities. The community college has the advantage of not being saddled with years of academic tradition which prevent it from changing to suit the educational needs of the community It serves. The flexibility of the community college in developing new programs, particularly in the technical areas, is going to provide industry with many of the badly needed technicians it is now unable to secure.

"This paper reviews the main concepts ruling the design, implementation and performance of active explosion barrier systems for underground coal mines in the USA. The document examines the parameters needed for the design of this type of system, such as overpressure and flame speed, suppressant deployment speed and duration time of the active barrier. The document also discusses the available solutions for gassy mines and the concepts behind the selection of machined mounted and roadway active explosion barrier systems. The paper includes a review of active explosion barrier systems developed in the USA and South Africa. The paper provides an overview of the current status of this technology in the underground coal mining industry in the USA, and the possible implementation of such systems. The paper concludes with the identification of the future work needed for the successful implementation of the systems in several conditions to enhance the safety of underground coal mine operations and to provide more tools to the miners for their safety.INTRODUCTIONUnderground coal mine explosions can be addressed in two ways, through prevention or mitigation. The United States mining industry practices have emphasized the prevention of explosions in underground coal mines, with little being done to mitigate the explosion once it occurs. Despite successful practices for the prevention of underground coal mine explosions in the US, the threat of an explosion does still exist. Other mining countries around the world have developed and implemented mitigation systems such as active explosion barriers in their underground mines. In the 1970s, the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) carried out extensive research on the use of active or triggered explosion barrier systems in the US; however, they are not currently used.Explosion barrier systems do not prevent explosions but mitigate the propagation of the shockwave and flame to other areas of the mine. The use of active explosion barrier systems enhance the safety of underground coal mines. Active or triggered explosion barriers will detect the arrival of the shockwave or flame front of the explosion and release inert material to suppress or extinguish the flame. The technology required for active barrier systems is readily available based on their presence in other mining countries and must be adapted for their use in US coal mines. The adaption must consider the coal dust and methane concentrations in US coal mines, the mine geometry, and the mining equipment used."

Run-out analyses of tailings storage facilities are typically undertaken using methods based on rheological theory. These are reasonable techniques to model the behaviour of tailings that, through significant run-out and possibly mixing with supernatant water, are generally acting in a fluidised manner. Such modelling often follows on from two-dimensional continuum analysis models where, if failure is predicted, grid failure often occurs when deformations begin to increase. This results in a disconnect between the prediction of failure and the modelling of the potential extent of the failure.Recently, rezoning methods have been incorporated into commercially available two-dimensional soil mechanics deformation codes. Rezoning techniques enable large deformations to be modelled within a two-dimensional continuum analysis framework; however, while promising, the use of such tools is not yet widespread, and a consensus is yet to develop on how they should be applied to tailings dam run-out modelling.This paper uses FLAC rezoning techniques to model the flow behaviour of two historic tailings dam failures. The purpose of these analyses is to critically assess the performance of rezoning against some available historic failures. The required data to undertake such an analysis is outlined, along with the inherent limitations and assumptions required. Parametric analyses are outlined to address some of these issues. In general, the analyses undertaken underestimated the flow distance observed in the historic failures by varying degrees; however, in some instances, the analysis reasonably reproduced the qualitative shape of the initial failure zone. A variety of potential reasons for the discrepancy between historical observations and the models undertaken are provided.CITATION:Reid, D, 2015. A process for extracting 69 percent of the vanadium from weathered Nevada dolomitic shale containing about 1 percent V205 was developed on a laboratory scale by the Bureau of Mines. The process essentially is comprised of salt roasting, leaching with dilute sulfuric acid, solvent extraction, and precipitation of vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Carbonaceous unweathered shale was less amenable to treatment. A preliminary cost estimate for mining and processing 1,500 tons per day of weathered shale indicated a production cost of about 1 dollar per lb of V205. Considering recent sales at nearly $1. 75 per lb of contained V205, larger scale testing to obtain more definitive process design and evaluation data may be warranted.

Coalbed methane development is an important way to effectively realize a source of clean energy and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases. However, due to the low permeability of coal seams, the development of coalbed methane in China has encountered substantial barriers. Protective layer mining can efficiently minimize in situ stress and increase coal seam permeability, thus improving gas drainage and avoiding gas disasters. This study analyzed the characteristics of gas migration and the change in permeability during the in situ stress releasing process through experiments and numerical simulation to study the gas drainage effect of a coal mine in an unloaded coal seam under specific geological conditions. First, a stress–strain-seepage coupled test of coal was carried out, and the evolution features of coal permeability during stress loading and unloading processes were investigated. Second, experimental results were used to develop a mathematical model of coal seepage under mining unloading conditions. Finally, a numerical model was developed based on the real geological conditions of the Wulan coal mine to explore the characteristics of in situ stress release and permeability evolution, as well as the gas drainage process in an unloaded coal seam. By combining protective layer mining and gas drainage technology, the risk of gas outburst is significantly reduced.

Mining law has developed in Great Britain (GB) over centuries, mainly in response to lessons learned after disasters and other major incidents. This has led to a culture of preventing repeat accidents, rather than predicting and controlling unsafe acts or conditions.This paper explains how, initially in response to a government drive to reduce the burden on industry, the opportunity was taken to review and reform all 48 sets of GB mining-specific law into a single document. The great coal strike of 1902, which confined the work at the Short Mountain colliery of the Lykens Valley Coal Com pany almost exclusively to pumping, gave an opportunity to determine with considerable accuracy the cost of pumping the water from these very old, extensive and wet mines. This colliery, which is located in the extreme southwestern end of the anthracite coal-field, has been operated continuously since 1836, and has shipped 7,747,313 tons of coal. This and the Williamstown colliery are the only operations in Dauphin county. The workings cover about 5 miles along the North dip of the extreme westerly end of the basin, with the operating slopes near the center. They extend around the westerly spoon of the basin and back about 31/4 miles easterly on the South dip. The mines are very deep, the present workings ex tending to 711 ft. below sea-level, and about 1600 ft. below the lowest surface-opening. The coal is hoisted principally from the Short Mountain slope, which is 1550 ft. long, with 26 to 68 degrees dip, and from an inside slope, No. 4, 800 ft. long, with 52 to 72 degrees dip. The ordinary capacity of the colliery is about 1000 tons per day, and the average output for the years 1897 to 1901, in clusive, was 297,000 tons per year. The seams worked are the lowest Red Ash measures, being, respectively, Nos. I, II and III of the coal-bed series, but locally called the " Little Lykens," " Lykens," and " Whites." On the accompanying plan the Lykens seam is shown in full and the Whites in dotted lines. The pumping-plant is divided into four lifts, the pumps being located as shown in the section, Fig. 1, and the plan, Fig. 2.

The contamination of aquatic ecosystems by mercury wastes is one of the most serious forms of environmental pollution associated with the metal mining and electrochemical industries. The transformation of inorganic mercury to alkylated species is a reversible bacterially-mediated process. The production of methylated mercury is of ?major public health and eco-toxicological concern because these forms of mercury are highly toxic ?and they bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms. We determined the response of the genetic determinants of mei:cury transrormation by Pseudomonas species (that predominate in contaminated soils and sediments), to the concentration and species? or available mercurfiations. By combining selective isolation and gene. ?probe techniques, the intrinsic genetic potential for mercury detoxification in a contaminated environment ?can be estimated. We determined that genetic units required for mericury volatilization (merA ?for mercuric reductase) are naturally amplified in response to mercury. Mercury-resistant bacteria that tolerate up to 100 ug Hg(Il)/ml of medium contain about 10 times more DNA fragments encoding merA than in unadapted bacteria. The exposure of bacteria to methylated.Hg (10 ug/ml lake water) produced increases (up to 10 times) in .genetic units, and higher levels of genetic expression (up to 50 times) per ml of lake water for the mercury reductase system, than on-induced lake water. The findings suggest that in environments where methylated Hg may accumulate as a result of bacterial activity, the reverse reaction which leads to the removal of mercury through volatilization from the system, may be achieved by inducing genetic ?amplification and expression of the mercuric reductase gene system.

Dimension stone includes a wide variety of natural materials that are put to an equally wide variety of uses. It is possible to classify dimension stone according to the end use to which the stone is put or according to the lithology of the stone. Both schemes are used by the United States Bureau of Mines in the annual Minerals Yearbook. The 1969 Yearbook lists 15 specific uses and has additional miscellaneous catagories. The same Yearbook lists five specific rock types or lithologies, and also includes a miscellaneous category. In a short presentation it would hardly be possible to list and define all these categories, much less discuss the evaluation of deposits with regard to all possible combinations. Besides, I am only slightly familiar with some of the uses and their requirements. I have therefore chosen to limit my remarks to some special problems in evaluating dimension stone that is to be cut and finished to specific sizes, tolerances, and finishes for use in buildings and some monuments. This use class is called cut stone in the Minerals Yearbook. In terms of dollar value it is the largest single use category. In 1969 the dollar value of cut stone was $29,122,000 which is more than twice the value of the next largest category. For those of you who are interested in other use applications of dimension stone I suggest that you start with recent articles by Bowles (1960), Currier (1960), and Barton (1968).

The commercial analysis of Special High-Grade zinc usually involves the determination of lead, iron, copper and cadmium as impurities in the base metal. Over the past 20 years, as the result of metallurgical improvements in the art of producing Special High-Grade zinc metal there has taken place a gradual exclusion of almost all extraneous elements, and the few that do remain in the final product have been virtually reduced to the vanishing point. Thousands of tons of zinc are now commercially produced annually and made available to the trade, in which impurities are present only in the order of 0.0010 per cent or less and the sum total of all impurities does not exceed 0.0025 per cent. To such zinc the term "super-purity" might well be applied without undue exaggeration. The techniques used for production control and final analysis of Special High-Grade zinc by means of emission spectra in the laboratories of the electrolytic zinc plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. are based on the premise that self-electrodes are to be preferred over all other forms for the examination of the zinc in question. Furthermore, after a survey of the literature and considerable experimental work,' it was decided that the spectrographic method of internal control, the principle of which was first announced by Gerlach,2 using a modification of the high-voltage alternating-current arc source introduced by Duffendack and Thompson,3 with the calibration of each photographic plate as recommended by Wolfe,4 would yield the most accurate and reproducible results. Self-electrodes were chosen in order to make use of one of the unique advantages inherent in spectrographic analysis; namely, the rapid and almost effortless detection of elements other than those being quantified by the analyst; or conversely, the proof that the zinc is free from such impurities if no spectral line of the suspected element appears. This fact was verified for certain elements, and will be discussed later. Carbon electrodes impregnated or packed with zinc salts chemically prepared from the zinc to be assayed were avoided for a number of reasons. First, the chemical manipulation was another time-consuming step, which increased the chances for contamination. Second, none of the common zinc salts, such as the chloride, nitrate or sulphate, yielded reproducible results under our conditions, nor did the spectral line of the impurity appear as readily in the low concentrations as when using zinc metal. Third, no commercial carbon, except the very expensive, was pure enough to use with this grade of zinc and the continued time, effort and expense incurred in the purification of carbon were not desirable. The use of special High-Grade zinc self-electrodes introduces certain complications with regard to obtaining satisfactory excitation conditions, because it seems necessary to raise the temperature

This paper presents experimental design and development of a low-cost remote sensing hardware designed to support automated site data acquisition for near real-time progress reporting of construction operations. The developed hardware utilizes open source microcontroller equipped with multiple sensors that include 3D accelerometer, GPS, Data logger and Bluetooth. The use of open source microcontroller makes the developed design cost effective; freeing it from the need for costly license fees. Its platform configuration is flexible; enabling the addition of temperature, weight and other sensors, Wi-Fi and Xbee capabilities to suit individual field applications. Pilot tests have been carried out in laboratory and outdoor environments. The results prove effectiveness and robustness of the developed configuration. The paper provides description of the individual components used in the development of this prototype hardware. It also describes the technical characteristics, capabilities and limitations of the developed hardware. The findings of comparison with alternative technologies used for outdoor tracking of construction operations are presented. The comparison is carried out with respect to range, cost and suitability for outdoor environment. The developed hardware is expected to support a wide range of applications including tracking of earthmoving operations, highway construction and onsite resources. As well, it is expected to enhance safety on construction jobsites.

A major contribution to the art of blasting was made at the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company?s Hawkins Mine in Cashwauk, Minnesota during April of 1956. It was here that the first experiments with fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate were conducted-experiments which led to the development of the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil method of blasting which has been eagerly adopted by open pit and quarry operators throughout the United States. While this new blasting agent was a more or less natural outgrowth of the Akremite Process devised by Maumee Colleries of Terre Haute, Indiana; no one, to our knowledge, had used this particular combination of ingredients prior to this time. Certainly this was a "break-through" as far as the Lake Superior District was concerned. Akremite consists of a mechanical mixture of grained ammonium nitrate and a solid carbonaceous material packed in a plastic bag. At the time of its introduction to the Mesaba Range, Akremite sold for 10.5 cents a pound as compared to the 18 cent powder previously used in both wet and dry large hole blasting. The discovery of this agent was indeed a remarkable achievement, one that afforded a substantial reduction in blasting costs. However, Akremite proved to be only an intermediate step in the evolution of our present low cost explosives. Cleveland-Cliffs utilized prilled ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and then eliminated the mixing and packaging plant entirely by combining the two raw materials in the field at the drill hole collar or in the hole itself. Thus we have approached the ultimate in simplicity, for the blaster and his helper now manufacture their own explosives not only as they are needed but where they are needed, and at a cost of under 4 cents a pound. This two-man crew may charge and explode as much as 8 tons of ammonium nitrate in an eight-hour shift and in so doing break some 65,000 tons of ore.

Stress-stvain curves are presented for Ni3Al (y') cvystals in several ovientations, deformed in tension and compression at constant displacement rate, at temperatures from 70° to 2000°F. Both the yield stress and wovk havdening increase with temperature, with the magnilude of the effect dependent on ovientation. The yield stress maximum occurs at 1500°F in [001], at 1400°F in [011], and at 1200°F in [111]. The suppression of the yield stress peak in [011] and [111] orientatiorzs is due to the onset of cube slip, rather than octahedval slip, a1 elerated temperatures. The temperature and orientalion dependence of work hardening in nominal single slip orientations corvelates with changes in the CRSS ratio for octahedral slip and cube slip, in agreement with a model for work hardening based on pinning of screw dislocalions by cross slip from an octahedral plane into a cube plane. It is concluded that the unique plastic properties of y' have a decisive influence on both ductility and strength characleristics of y +y' nickel-base superalloys. It has long been recognized that the strength of y + y' nickel-base superalloys depends on the precipitation of the y' phase [basically Ni3(Al,Ti)]. This paper presents new data on the strength characteristics of single crystals of simple y' (Ni3Al), and forms the first step in a systematic program aimed at elucidating the mechanisms of hardening in the complex commercial alloys. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of off-stoichiometric NiA1 were grown from the melt under vacuum by a modified Bridgman method. The melt was poured into a preheated alumina mold and crystal growth was promoted from one end by gradient cooling. The crystals were homogenized by annealing in hydrogen at 2400° F for 72 hr followed by furnace cooling. Chemical analysis of samples taken from several crystals gave an average composition of 88.2 wt pct Ni. Spectrographic analysis gave as the principal impurities in weight percent— Si (0.02), Mg (0.01), Fe (0.02), Ti (0.002), Cu (0.008), and Co (0.03). Tensile specimens with specifications as in Fig. 1 were prepared by a series of operations involving electrical discharge machining, precision grinding, and electropolishing. Compression specimens with dimensions 1/4 by 1/4 by -3/4 in. were prepared in a similar manner, except for the initial shaping operation using a precision cut-off wheel/two-circle goniometer unit to give selected crystal orientations. Specimens were deformed in a Baldwin-Wiedemann testing machine with furnace attachment, using a strain rate of 5 x 10-4 sec-1. The strain measuring device consisted of extension arms attached to the tensile grips (or compression plattens) at one end and leading out of the furnace to an LVDT at the other. Temperature was controlled by a thermocouple placed in contact with the specimen. According to the known phase diagram for the Ni/A1 system,' when an alloy of the specified composition is cooled from the melt, primary y (nickel solid solution) dendrites grow at the expense of the liquid phase, which becomes enriched in aluminum. At the eutectic composition the remaining liquid freezes as a two-phase mixture of y + y' (Ni3Al). Upon further cooling, a solid state transformation occurs, involving the precipitation of y' in the primary dendrites, and the complete transformation of the eutectic mixture to massive y'. The as-cast structure consists, therefore, of y + y' dendrites with interdendritic regions of massive y', i.e., transformed eutectic, Fig. 2. 2) DISCUSSION OF RESULTS 2.1) Stress-Strain Curves. Fig. 3 shows tensile stress-strain curves for crystals in orientations close to [001] deformed at temperatures from 70° to 2000°F. Both the yield stress and total elongation are strongly temperature-dependent. At 70°F, easy glide is absent, and the work hardening coefficient BIT - G/300. At T > 1500°F, the negative slope of the stress-strain curves is due to pronounced necking in the crystals. The yield stress maximum at 1500° F corresponds with a minimum in the ductility, Fig. 4. We evaluate the exploration effort by diamond drilling for zinc in central Tennessee and southern Kentucky through a statistical analysis comparing the Middle Tennessee district with the older Tri-State and Upper Mississippi Valley districts. All of the ore deposits are of the Mississippi Valley type and are similar geologically. Through statistical analyses we attempt to answer these questions: Had the drilling density in the Middle Tennessee district been applied to the Tri-State district, how much of the ore in the Tri-State would have been discovered? Had this drilling been done in the Upper Mississippi Valley district, how much of the ore in that district would have been found? Which of these two older districts does Middle Tennessee more closely resemble in intensity of zinc mineralization? Is more drilling warranted in the Middle Tennessee district? Our data base includes tonnage and area distributions of ore deposits in the Tri-State dis¬trict, sizes of ore bodies and probabilities of their recognition in the three districts, and data for the Elmwood mine in the Middle Tennessee district. Our statistical analysis considers the consequences of drilling holes in the three districts on square grids at coarse, intermediate, and fine spacings. We conclude that the drilling pattern assumed for Middle Tennessee would have found some but not all of the ore in the two older districts. We believe that in intensity of mineralization Middle Tennessee more closely resembles the Tri-State than the Upper Mississippi Valley district, and that more drilling is warranted in the Middle Tennessee district.

THE local auditorium of a little Alabama mining town was crowded with expectant men, women and children, as the bulletin board had announced the addition of visiting entertainers to supplement the local talent and motion pictures which usually made up the program of the regular monthly safety meeting. In the audience, near the stage, sat a group of bright-faced boys in boy scout uniforms, discussing the picture just completed. As the lights flashed on a crash and scream was heard from the outside, a shrill whistle and word of command from the scoutmaster, and five of the scouts ran out of the hall, while the mine super-intendent stepped on the stage and requested everyone to keep their seats. The scouts returned, three of them carrying a limp figure in their arms, while the other two cleared the doorway and aisle of excited spectators. They marched to the stage and, placing the apparently badly-injured boy on the floor, proceeded to give an expert demonstration of first aid to the injured. The scoutmaster then explained to the audience that the whole affair had been arranged for their benefit, and invited the local first-aid men to come up on the stage to examine and criticize the boys' work. This gave an opening for several talks on the value of first-aid training and accident prevention, which is the main object of the monthly meetings. This demonstration was given by the first-aid team of Troop One, and the entertainment was provided by members of Troop One and Twenty-eight of the Bir-mingham Scout Council, organized by the writer for the purpose of promoting interest in the welfare and safety meetings in the mining villages of the State. During the past year they have visited a number of such meet-ings and presented programs similar to the one men-tioned above. However, in order to assure a good attendance, entertainment features must also be pro-vided, and the serious part of the evening program was interspersed with excellent vocal and instrumental mu-sic, dancing and novelty acrobatic acts furnished by the visiting scouts. In addition to the numerous first-aid teams of the Birmingham Council, there are hundreds of scouts scat-tered throughout the mining district whose knowledge of first aid, safety first, life-saving, personal health and public health are a constant source of protection to their community. All of these subjects are covered by merit badge pamphlets and are required of an eagle scout.

Spain is a major producer of dimension stone, which is one of the most important industrial sectors in the northwest of Spain. This justifies the maintenance of these industries, although the technical and environmental requirements for their continuity are increasingly demanding. The main target of this paper is to present a new methodology in order to obtain k-ratio stress values on the basis of flat jack measurements and finite element numerical back- analysis with Rocscience© RS2 software. Continuous iterations were performed to try to find a relationship between the k₀ and the measured stress in the tunnel roof and sidewalls. It focuses on technical aspects of the method for designing mine chambers in the slate industry that were previously mined by open pit methods. The size of the chambers impacts the operating cost, and the dimensioning of a correct support ensures better efficiency and safety. Correct knowledge of the k₀ therefore is critical for the design of the support. The proposed new method entails a simplification of the classical procedure for estimating the k-ratio.

The proportional limit of iron crystals in torsion is governed by the resolved shear stress in the most highly stressed slip systems, averaged around the specimen circumference, and does not obey a critical resolved shear stress law. Crystals of most orientations exhibit a stage of easy plastic deformation, akin to easy glide in tensile or shear specimens. Transient deformation, similar to that which occurs in single crystals of other materials, is also observed. THE torsional deformation of single crystals of magnesium (hcp) and aluminum (fcc) has been described recently by Choi et al.,&apos; especially with respect to the criterion for the orientation dependence of the onset of plastic flow in these materials. The purpose of this paper is to present results of torsion tests of iron single crystals and thus to extend this yield criterion to a bcc metal. In addition to considering the variation of proportional limit with crystal orientation, this paper also briefly treats work hardening, transient deformation, and the mechanism of plastic flow in iron. The effects of the method of surface polishing and the chemical purity of the iron have been investigated. STRESS DISTRIBUTION It is convenient to express the stress at any point of a cylindrical crystal stressed in torsion in terms of t0, which is the shear stress acting at the surface on a plane normal to the axis of the cylinder and in a direction tangential to the cylinder. This stress is given by To = 2T/pr3 [1] where T is the applied torque and r the specimen radius. The shear stress t, resolved in any chosen slip system is given in terms of 7, by1 Ts/TO = sin 0, cos d sin (0, -) + cos , sin d sin d - ) [2] where 0 and d are the angles between the specimen axis and the slip plane normal and slip direction, respectively; h is the angular circumferential position on the specimen at which t, is being determined, measured from an arbitrary reference plane which includes the axis;o and d are the angular coordinates of the projections of the slip plane normal and slip direction on a transverse section with respect to this same reference plane. Slip in iron occurs in a <1ll> direction on the {ll0}, (1121, and (123) planes, which together comprise 48 slip systems. A complete evaluation of the stress distribution in an iron crystal stressed in torsion would therefore require a calculation of Ts/T0 as a function of for 48 different slip systems. Fortunately Gough,&apos;who studied the behavior of iron crystals in alternating torsion, was able to simplify this problem considerably. He showed that it was sufficient to consider a kind of average slip plane for each slip direction, namely the mathematical plane of maximum resolved shear stress containing the slip direction considered. This simplifying approximation is possible because, for each slip direction, the active slip plane or planes lie very near this mathematical plane of maximum shear stress. Vogel and rick&apos; have critically reviewed the early work of Taylor and Elam,13 Taylor,14 and Fahrenhorst and schmid8 from which the identification of the above crystallographic planes as slip planes in the bcc lattice largely stems. While their criticism is clearly justified, their own results do little to clarify the issue. The role of cross slip (screw dislocations changing glide planes) is evidently so important in this case, as Read3 has suggested, that methods for deducing slip systems from observations of gross slip traces are inadequate, such traces commonly arising from complex dislocation motion. Thus the treatment given here involving the plane of maximum resolved shear stress seems a logical simplification especially in view of Gough&apos;s2 study of a iron. There is, however, an assumption built into the subsequent treatment the comparative validity of which is difficult to assess, namely, that slip in all slip systems in iron may be characterized by a common critical resolved shear stress. The shear stress 7, resolved in a slip direction defined by d andd, and on the plane of maximum shear stress containing this direction, is found by first maximizing 7s/70 with respect to either Oo or 4,. The slip plane coordinates are then eliminated by using the relation between 0, ,o and d, d, namely,

"ADVANCE planning of mining methods, from the first development openings to stope layout and pillar recovery, has long been accepted as a normal method of operating a mine. Recently, mine managers have become increasingly aware that advance planning of cost and accounting controls can also be considered a normal method of operation. The use of such controls is wide-spread in manufacturing industries. In mining, the gold mines of South Africa have pioneered, with marked success, in this field and have been closely associated with most of the research and field work in accounting control. Canadian mine managers are also beginning to realize the advantages of using planned costs. The control procedures which subsequently have been introduced at various mines have come to be known by such names as ""Responsibility Costing"" or Budgetary Control"".Budgetary control, the term used in this paper, is based on the concept of decentralized authority with centralized control. ;The control is achieved by measuring results against yardsticks which are in the form of budgets or standards. Bud-gets are made for the future activities of each possible operation as planned by the department head, and attention is directed to variations from this plan. Furthermore, the control process charges to each operation only those costs which are incurred directly for that operation, and which can be controlled by the person in charge. Thus, budgetary control relates results to the officials responsible for those results. Expenditures are analyzed according to the organizational structure of the mine and the people who run it, and not according to production processes."
