The Bureau of Mines surveyed the solid wastes that have accumulated from coal mining in Washington, Oregon, and Montana. Location, amount, character, and condition were determined, and both economic and environmental factors were considered. Areas covered by waste comprise 800 acres in Washington, 5 acres in Oregon, and 1,200 acres in Montana. In a few cases waste is being utilized, particularly cinder from burned refuse dumps, as fill in road construction and as a ceramic raw material. It is estimated that wastes deriving from coal mined for electric power generation by 1974 may amount to 3 million tons of washery refuse, 2.7 million tons of fly ash, and 1,000 acres of spoil banks.

PRACTICALLY all of Quebec's chrysotile asbestos production derives from twelve mining and milling operations located in the "Eastern Townships" area of the province. The annual output of these twelve operations exceeds one million tons of chrysotile asbestos, valued at over one hundred million dollars, and is shipped to manufacturers spread over all six continental areas of the world. A total of approximately twenty million ton of asbestos ore yearly, or about seventy-five thousand tons a day, is mined. Individually, the operations vary in size from about two thousand tons to thirty thousand tons per day. Removal of waste rock and overburden to develop these ore tonnages varies greatly from one mine to another, but would probably average out at about a one to one ratio.

The fracture surfaces of specimens of titanium a1loys which exhibited susceptibility to subcritical crack growth in a wide variety of environments, including aqueous solutions, alcohols, hydrocarbon gases, carbm tetrachloride, and dry air, were examined. The dominant and characteristic fracture mode was cleavage. which became mixed with an increasing porportion of ductile fracture modes (dimples. and so forth) as the applied KI was increased. The cleavage plane in all the alloys was oriented at 15 deg from (0001) of the a phase. No indices could be assigned to the 15 deg cleavage Plane because of uncertainty as to which zone it belonged to. SLOW crack growth and delayed fracture take place in certain titanium alloys at stress intensity (KI) lower than the critical values for complete fracture (KIc) found in short-time tests for plane strain fracture toughness.' Such crack growth may take place in very dry air on sustained loading if the alloy contains a sufficient amount of hydrogen and if the stress intensity factor is higher than a threshold value designated KIH.2 Similarly, a number of environments such as water, alcohols, and hydrocarbons may cause slow crack growth provided the stress intensity factor exceeds the threshold value KISCC. In this paper it is intended to examine some fracto-graphic and crystallographic details of this subcritical crack propagation process as related to alloy composition, environment, and stress intensity. It has been previously reported that subcritical crack growth takes place in titanium alloys in aqueous environments by cleavage.2"6 The observations to be described here indicate that in the alloys investigated the mode of subcritical crack propagation is more dependent on the stress intensity during cracking than on the environment. The fracture mode is illustrated with photographs of the fracture surfaces at a wide range of magnifications. The crystallographic character of the cleavage mode is also presented and the results discussed. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The studies were made on four titanium alloys— Ti-8A1-1Mo-lV, Ti-5A1-2.5Sn, Ti-7Al-1Mo-lV, and Ti-0.350. Of these four alloys the first two were mill annealed and fine grained. The latter two were noncommercial and coarse grained, having been prepared for other experimental purposes. The crystallographic studies required a large-grain size. Consequently the fine-grained alloys were an- nealed in a vacuum at 1950°F and furnace cooled to produce samples for these studies. This treatment did not alter the microstructure significantly except for grain size. All the aluminum-containing alloys showed primary a with a network of ß-phase particles within the a grains; Figs. 1 and 2 show this microstructure for the specific case of fine-grained Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V. The cracks in the figures will be discussed later. Fractographic studies were made on all the alloys, but the electron fractographs displayed herein are from the Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V alloy in the fine-grained condition. Emphasis was placed on this commercial alloy because considerable information was available on the stress-corrosion cracking characteristics in a variety of environments. Sufficient supplementary studies of the alloy after the anneal to produce large grains were conducted to establish that the stress-corrosion cracking susceptibility and fractographic characteristics were not changed significantly. Thus it could be inferred that the crystallographic data obtained exclusively on large-grained specimens would apply also to fine-grained specimens. Fracture surfaces for study were obtained using precracked cantilever beam specimens loaded as described by Brown. The precracked section of a specimen was immersed in the environment of interest. Values of initial stress intensity factor Kli were chosen slightly higher than KISCC in order to obtain a fairly extensive region of slow crack growth. Fracture surfaces representative of a variety of stress intensity levels could then be examined because in the cantilever beam test KI increases as the crack propagates.

The ability to identify hazards during a workplace examination is a critical skill for mineworkers to have in order to maintain a safe workplace. While research suggests that being able to successfully recognize hazards requires a complex set of competencies, it is unclear which competencies are most critical to adequately perform a workplace examination. This paper presents a hazard recognition competencies framework as an explanation of the competencies that affect mineworker hazard recognition. To better understand how the industry is selecting and preparing workplace examiners, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) interviewed nine health and safety (H&S) professionals at surface stone, sand and gravel mine sites throughout the United States. These interviews verified that the competencies included in the hazard recognition competencies framework agree with perceptions of the interviewed H&S professionals, who also provided validity for the critical role these competencies play. Finally, the results of this study are presented within the context of current NIOSH research findings related to hazard recognition.

I. INTRODUCTION. DURING the past 50 years the attention of mining-men has been turned to Africa, and within the past decade prospecting-expeditions sent into Central Africa have resulted in the opening-up of several mines. Having recently spent two years in the Belgian Congo for the Société Internationale Forestiere et Miniere du Congo, it is our purpose to outline briefly the mining-conditions in that part of Central Africa. Before it became, in 1908, a Belgian colony, this region was known as the Congo Free State. II. LOCATION AND AREA. The Belgian Congo lies in southwestern Central Africa, west of the continental divide, is illustrated in Fig. 1. It has a coastline of but 20 miles on the Atlantic, but widens rapidly eastward to points 5° north and 14° south of the equator. Its area is 908,000 sq. miles, which is almost one-quarter that of the United States and Alaska, or more than one and one-half times that of Alaska. Stated in other terms, its area is nearly one-third that of the United States, exclusive of Alaska and the insular possessions, or more than that of all the United States east of the Mississippi river. The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. Risk assessment techniques were triggered by major public disasters, such as the Flixborough chemical plant disaster (1973), Three Mile Island nuclear plant event (1979) and others.Today, most industries see risk assessment as an inherent part of their business, but do mining sites capture business risks that are related to major loss scenarios, which could have a significant impact on the operation?Does your risk assessment process:- involve a team having the right skill set so that the discussion is both stimulated and technically sound?- use generic assessment when a site-specific assessment is needed?- fail to consider all possible outcomes, including maximum foreseeable loss (MFL)?- fail to identify all hazards and controls associated with a particular activity?- fail to monitor controls effectively?This paper addresses the issues identified by these questions and provides some direction for developing a risk management process where business risk associated with critical asset integrity is integrated with other business and safety and health risk processes to provide a robust method for managing your business. The work of the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines may be considered to have had its beginning in April , 1909 , when H. H. Clark was , appointed electrical engineer in the U. S. Geological Survey. The first manuscript prepared by members of this section was Miners Circular 5, which was issued in October , 1911. During each succeeding year additional papers have been published dealing with questions relating to electrical safety. Since 1916 the electrical section has also conducted laboratory investigations on flame safety lamps and gas- detecting devices and has published reports relating thereto . The following selected list of publications covering safety studies and activities of the electrical section has been prepared for the convenience of those who wish to keep themselves advised concerning electrical safety matters . The list includes only such publications as are applicable to present-day prac tices .

In broadening the utility of spectrochemical methods 9f analysis of ore samples 3,4/ a procedure employ in the total energy method, has been adapted to determination of silver in ores. Silver is the first element in group I of the periodic table to be studied in the Bureau of Mines program. Two silver lines in the spectrum, Ag X\ 3280.683 and 3382.89lR were used in the study, and the problems that had to be overcome were: (1) Influence of extraneous elements on line intensities, (2) preparation of standard curves, and (3) improvement in equipment and technique to increase accuracy. Sodium, potassium, sulfur, selenium, iron, cobalt, and nickel yielded low intensities and hence low results, particularly on the samples high in silver, but addition of 60 percent or more of lime counteracted these effects. One calibration curve must be used for samples low in silver and other for those high in silver. The chocks with fire assaying were close enough for preliminary or exploratory investigations, and the method is much more rapid.

"Inco's Little Stobie Mine is a low-grade nickel operation producing approximately 4()()() tons per day. Backfill has never been an economical option at the mine; therefore, the only viable type of mining in the upper zones has been by sub-level cave. This mining method allows for the draw-down of a rock cover into the empty stopes to provide stability to the over-all rock mass. In the lower areas of the mine, bulk blasthole mining methods have taken place, without rock fill, resulting in extremely large open stopes. As the mine reaches its final stage of recovery, it is inevitable that the hangingwall of the large voids will undergo tensile failure via spoiling.This paper deals with the collaborating efforts of Inco's Rock Mechanics group and the Little Stobie mining operations toward the successful recovery of the ore zone remnants such that the inevitable failure, and time of failure, of the rock mass is ""controlled"". Within the mining scheme, several key requirements had to be met to satisfy the operations: (1) production rates; (2) good blast fragmentation; and (3) secure pulling-horizons. A full-scale rock mechanics study was carried out involving: numerical modelling studies; pulling ellipse analyses; blast design, monitoring and analyses; laser profiling; and time domain rej7ectometry (TDR) instrumentation. The final recovery scheme, employing a controlled failure, involves recommendations on: (1) blasting techniques; (2) support systems; (3) mining sequences and scenarios; and (4) monitoring systems."

Kinematic demands from lateral ground deformations can be a major cause of damage to maritime and highway transportation structures such as wharves, piers, and bridges. These kinematic demands are different from the ground deformations in the free field in that the resisting forces from piles will reduce the ground deformations to some extent (i.e., pile pinning effect). Current design codes for wharf structures allow the beneficial resisting forces from pile pinning effects to be incorporated in pseudostatic slope stability analysis (e.g., ASCE/COPRI 61-14). While design guidelines that are specifically developed for bridge foundations provide recommendations on how to incorporate the pile pinning effects (e.g., Caltrans 2012), their applicability to wharf structures need to be evaluated. This study uses the results of a large-scale centrifuge test on a pile-supported wharf structure to evaluate the accuracy of available Newmark sliding block analysis in estimating the lateral ground deformations. Pile pinning effects are incorporated based on the approach outlined by Caltrans. The results of this study support the use of existing pile pinning methods that were primarily developed for bridge foundations in maritime structures (e.g., wharves and piers). It was found that median Newmark displacements provide a good estimate of the permanent end-of-shaking displacements and that the median plus 1 standard deviation Newmark displacements provide a good estimate of the peak transient displacements. Design considerations for use in the Newmark sliding block analysis to estimate the kinematic demands on piles are discussed.

Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses. In the establishment of a useful failure criteria for complicated, fabricated structures, two basic areas of knowledge must be evaluated: 1. The accuracy of the applied stress analysis must be known in comparison with actual stresses encountered during mill operation. 2. The metallurgical fracture properties of the basic materials must be established with reference to non-destructive examination (NDE) methods to be used during fabrication. Both of the above can only be evaluated by use of full scale tests on the structures, and/or components, of interest. This paper describes such tests and comparisons as applied to several large mill installations. In addition, weldment component fatigue tests arid flawed casting strain gauge tests are also discussed. The combination of such test results allows for the formulation of failure criteria directly applicable to the fabrication and examination procedures followed in grinding mill structure manufacture.

The market potential f or these advanced engineering alloys is substantial, and their impact on traditional zinc die casting alloy consumption is particuarly important. The ZA alloys, in offering increased performance through zinc castings produced at low cost and by a wide range of moulding processes, have unlocked a multitude of new end-use applications.Following a review of the development of ZA alloys, of their key properties and of their performance characteristics, the numerous challenges that the alloys present to the zinc industry and to the R&D community are discussed.IntroductionZinc is anodic to steel and has a low, uniform rat e of corrosion; it has a low melting point, can be cast with precision , and is readily finished. In addition to its use in protecting steel and in the production of a wide range of castings, zinc is employed : (1) to produce brass, high-strength aluminum alloys and magnesium die casting alloys, (2) in the wrought state for coinage and in building products, particularly as roofing materials , and (3) as an oxide, in the rubber industry, in ceramics, glass, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and as the starting materials for many chemicals.Zinc die castings are produced with accuracy at high speed, at low cost, are easily finished and have excel1ent mechnical properties . Car fuel economy, changes in automobile styling, competition from other materials, increased sophistication of design and miniaturization have all led to a dramatic change in the volume of zinc consumed for die-casting applications. This has been particularly notable in the United States. Throughout the 19505 and the I960s, casting was the fastest growing major use of zinc; it was firmly established, accounting for 35% of the total zinc consumption(1), By 1983, the volume of zinc being purchased for casting applications had dropped to less than 20% of all zinc consumed in the United States. In the western world(2), consumption for zinc casting application s is currently at about 15%; being nearly equal to the zinc consumed by the brass industry. Coating applications dominate with a consumption of more than 40% of the total market."
