There has been a continuous interest in chemical aids for processing Canadian oil sands by hot water extraction process since the first commercial industry operation in 1967. Several inorganic and organic chemical systems have been introduced, of which sodium hydroxide is the most widely used extraction process aid by major producers. Use of NaOH, however, results in accumulation of sodium ions in recycled water, causing higher clays dispersion and producing tailings with poor geotechnical properties that turn into mature fine tailings. This is especially true for low grade and oxidized ores, which present the greatest challenges in bitumen recovery and produce the major portion of fine tailings. In this paper, we are presenting a novel method based on use of inorganic polymers as process aids for various low grade oil sands ores. Denver flotation cell and a laboratory scale hydrotransport loop were utilized to evaluate the effect of chemical dosage and operating parameters on the processability of oil sands samples from Athabasca region. Process tailings were examined for properties such as water chemistry, suspended solids, settling rate and the ease of tailing treatments. Our results demonstrate that the use of inorganic polymers during the froth process lead to a significant improvement in bitumen recovery from low grade oil sands and can improve further tailing treatments. This offers a viable solution that can be easily incorporated into current processing facilities and deliver several operational and economical benefits. Advantages in use of inorganic polymers versus sodium hydroxide are presented in details.

The Arkansas Novaculite of Devonian and Mississippian age is the most distinctive formation in the central Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from the standpoint of both topography and lithology. The formation typically forms precipitous, narrow ridges (hogbacks) which reflect the steepness of dip and the resistance and thickness of the rock units. The Arkansas Novaculite varies from less than 200 feet thick in the north to locally over 800 feet thick in the south and outcrops over an east-west distance of 360 km (200 miles) in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most of the rocks of the formation are highly siliceous with novaculite predominating, and lesser quantities of chert, siliceous shale, conglomerate and rarely sandstone. Novaculite is commonly defined as a homogeneous mostly white rock, translucent on thin edges with a dull to waxy luster and composed almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The word novaculite comes from the Latin word novacula, meaning razor hone. This term was first used by Richard Kirwan in his mineralogy text of 1784. The origin of novaculite remains controversial but we believe it was a primary silica derived mostly from the alteration of submarine volcanic-rich materials, with numerous fine biogenic components and some minor clastics (derived mostly from foreland facies via turbidity currents) and deposited as an amorphous siliceous ooze in the deep Ouachita trough. It was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz during diagenesis by the compaction of the overlying rocks and the intense Late Paleozoic Ouachita Mountain tectonism. In the central and southern portions of the region three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division predominantly of light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive often calcareous novaculite. In the northern exposures the formation is thinner and contains more black chert and shale, chert-shale conglom¬erate, sandstone and less novaculite. The massive novaculite of the Upper and Lower Divisions is a source of high purity silica (99+%). Indians were the first to use novaculite. They made their various tools and hunting implements from the weathered broken rock until they learned the quarrying techniques. The first white men in the area recognized the use of novaculite for sharpening their tools and knives: previously whetstones were obtained in small quantities from Europe. To this day whetstone is quarried mostly in areas which the Indians and possibly the Spanish previously worked. Some of the current mining practices have changed very little from those of the early quarryman. In areas where the novaculite of the Upper Division is poorly cemented, this friable tripolitic material has found applications in such uses as an abrasive, as a filler or extender in paints, plastics and other purposes. Some of the dense novaculite is suitable as a filler in fire bricks and also in plastics. Because some of it has the tendency to decrepitate when heated not all novaculite can be used for these applications. Several quarry operators are crushing novaculite for road, concrete, and other aggregate. This use was formerly rather limited due to the abrasiveness of the novaculite on crushing and screening equipment. Further potential uses of novaculite are speculative but include application of high purity silica in the production of silicon metal for solar cells, seed or "growing", and fusing quartz for electronics.

THE etch-pit technique has long been used to reveal low-angle boundaries and, in general, the distribution of dislocations in high-purity metals. Often this technique is amenable to quantitative computations,' but generally is affected by some degree of uncertainty because etch pits can be nucleated not only by dislocations, but also by inclusions and surface imperfections. In the case of high-purity zinc, Gilman' reported that etch pits were produced only after adding 0.1 atomic per cent of cadmium to the crystals and aging at a proper temperature. In the course of a study of low-angle boundary behavior in zinc crystals, etch pits were produced in 99.999 pct zinc without resorting to intentional contamination, by etching in a 50:50 HNO3H2O solution. The technique consists of etching until the heat of reaction brings the solution to a boil, and in displacing the etchant rapidly with a stream of cold water, thus avoiding staining. The undesirable features of this technique are the heating effect and the removal of a considerable amount of material. A high polish is obtained if staining is controlled properly; therefore, the etch pits appear very clearly and with excellent contrast when observed under dark field illumination. This is especially helpful for cursory examinations at low magnifications. Several observations were made on zinc crystals of square cross section, having one face parallel to the basal plane and one edge parallel to a slip direction, Fig. l(a). When such a crystal was bent about 2" over a glass die and annealed at 390°C, a sharp boundary was formed only in the inner portion of the crystal. Near the two prismatic faces, perpendicular to the basal plane, the boundary was always branched into many lower-angle boundaries, Fig. 1(b). Attempts to move the main boundary by applying a shear stress to the specimen invariably resulted in curving the boundary, the branched ends remaining pinned in their original location, Fig. 1 (c). The prismatic face, when etched as indicated in the foregoing, revealed the existence of numerous (sometimes up to 30) fine boundaries, nearly parallel to each other. Pre-existing lineage boundaries, generally parallel to the direction of growth, were barriers to the formation of polygonization boundaries and interrupted the continuity of the substructure, Fig. 2. Fatigue-related risk is a persistent safety concern for the mining industry. However, fatigue and sleepiness are often treated interchangeably, which can lead to confusion and potentially less effective reduction of safety risk. To provide clarity, we present an overview of similarities and differences between work-related fatigue risk and sleepiness including definitions, theories, measurements, and mitigation strategies. As a supplement, a summative visual model which highlights these similarities and differences is presented. Expanding industry knowledge in this area will assist safety professionals in crafting more targeted risk management practices appropriate for work-related fatigue risk, sleepiness, or both.

The accident at Unit No. 2 of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor (TMI-2) on 28 March 1979 was the worst nuclear accident in US history and crippled the nuclear industry. An international Vessel Investigation Project was formed to assess the integrity of the vessel. However, it was not possible to remove specimens from the lower head until January?March 1990. Fourteen of the fifteen specimens removed by electrical discharge machining were from under the debris pile that accumulated on the lower head due to melting of approximately 19 000 kg (45%) of the core. Specimens were previously cut from the lower head of a cancelled reactor of very similar size and design destined for Midland, Michigan. These specimens were subjected to controlled heating cycles with peak temperatures from 800°C to 1100°C for periods of 1 to 100 minutes. The initial study qualitatively compared the structures in the 15 specimens from TMI-2 to the control specimens from the Midland lower head. The writer used the same specimens and employed microindentation hardness traverses, electron microprobe analysis, and selective etching followed by quantitative metallography (by image analysis) to obtain a far more detailed description of the thermal exposure experienced.

Over the past 30 years, the authors have encountered numerous projects where recognizing the geology, soil properties and groundwater conditions, and considering alternative construction techniques have promoted efficient and cost-saving construction. The construction documents for these projects, produced by various engineering firms, provided basic information on geotechnical conditions. The authors became involved in each project either because there was a problem during design or construction or, as a contractor, won the project because they saw a value engineering opportunity to take advantage of the geologic setting of the project to design and build alternatives to what the designer depicted. Understanding the geologic setting is critical before planning and designing begins. Being able to work with the geology and the materials on site is preferred before specifying more costly and complex solutions, which often require the importing of materials and adherence to unnecessary and/or inappropriate specifications. Failing to understand the geology or not knowing all the techniques available for construction can lead designers to develop solutions that could be inappropriate. This paper presents several examples of value engineering and project performance enhancements developed through knowledge of basic soil mechanics and implementing innovative solutions. History and Background Most people attend DFI meetings, present their experiences, listen to others, and read articles and papers with the hope they can learn from others. Geotechnical engineers and contractors often interface with others in the execution of projects who have, at best, a rudimentary knowledge of geology and soil mechanics. Of course, there is a need for architects, bankers, and regulators, etc., but they typically do not have much interest in the nuances of geotechnical engineering, which relies on both art and science. Thus, significant time is spent educating counterparts in the need for comprehensive subsurface investigation programs and the intricacies of construction in the “dirt,” as they typically refer to soil and rock.

Working safely means working cost-effectively. Every "dangerous occurrence" and - even more so - every industrial accident causes disruptions in the planned course of construction. Besides moral and legal obligations, economic aspects are therefore also factors motivating increased efforts towards optimal prevention: improvements in work safety and protection of health are wise investments! Ever since its earliest days, the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) has made this subject one of its key objectives and therefore set up a Safety + Environmental Working Group, in which experts from the member organisations exchange national experience and develop proposals for "best practices". The paper presents current developments and results from the work of the S+E WG with particular reference to the project "Ideas for Safety Improvement".

The key problems of current flowsheets and equipments are analyzed. A new steel slag's crushing flowsheet whose key equipments are the improved inertia cone crusher and inertia vibrating jaw crusher is proposed. An advanced two stage open-circuit crushing method is adopted in the flowsheet, with 90% of particle size crushing under 6mm. Using inertia vibrating technology and selective crushing principle the crushers can realize steel slag separating fully into steel and slag and with flexible transmission mechanism the crusher can be protected when iron lump is passing. The flowsheets can enhance the recovery of metal greatly, and expand the application range of tail slag and added value.

THE observation of the flow layers, or Lüders' lines, produced in mild steel when it is stressed into the plastic range often provides considerable useful information for the study of the fundamental mechanism of the plastic flow of metals. It is a commonly observed fact that as soon as the upper yield point in a mild-steel tensile-test bar is passed, an unstable condition develops in the equilibrium, the load on the testing machine drops and if the surface of the bar contains a thin mill scale, the latter begins to flake off rapidly along certain "lines." These "lines" are in reality traces of wedge-shaped flow layers and are formed by the intersection of the surface of slip and the surface of the bar. The average plane of the flow layer itself has been found by various experimenters to be inclined at an angle of approximately 45° to the axis of the test bar. In a body of more complicated shape stressed in possibly a different man-ner, the tangent planes to the flow layers at each point seem in many cases to be inclined at an angle of about 45° to the principal stress direc-tions at the point. As examples of the latter may be mentioned the logarithmic spirals obtained when a rivet hole is punched in a thin plate, or when a tube is subjected to internal pressure only, etc. Hence if the flow layers are observed from an experiment, the shear-stress trajectories -the curves indicating the directions of the maximum shearing stresses in the body-may then be approximately determined. Since the latter curves form an orthogonal family inclined at 45° to the principal stress directions, the family of principal stress trajectories, or the curves indicating the directions of the principal stresses, may be thus obtained. Although the discontinuous type of stress-strain curve at the yield point is commonly observed with test bars of mild steel, more recent experiments have shown that this is by no means the only material exhibiting this interesting phenomenon. A similar effect has been observed in zinc and cadmium crystals, by Becker and Orowan;1 in duralumin and other aluminum alloys, by Dawidenkow,2 Elam,3 Fell, and others; in copper and copper-alloy crystals, by Elam;5 in brass by Elam;5 in brass wires by deForest;6 in higher carbon steels, tungsten steel, and

For many years , it has been the common practice at most copper mines to recover copper in solution in effluent mine water by precipitating the copper with scrap iron.4/ The technique employed varies from simply throwing scrap iron or tin cans into the waste ditches to passing the water through elaborate launder systems containing detinned scrap and baled cans . In general , a considerable amount of low - cost copper has been recovered that otherwise would have been lost . Iron consumption usually varies from 1 to 1-1/2 pounds of iron for each pound of copper recovered . The grade of the precipitate may be as much as 90 percent copper.4/ ,5/ Where the consumption of iron is materially greater , its cost is likely to be the determining factor of profit . In times of emergency, when the demand for scrap iron for remelting increases the cost of the iron sharply, and the supply of tin cans is not large enough to meet requirements , recovery of the copper might not be economical . The three principal reactions that take place when an acid mine water containing iron and copper salts in solution is brought into contact with metallic iron are : (1 ) Copper is precipitated and an equivalent amount of iron is dissolved , CuSO4 + Fe Cu + FeSO4 ; ( 2) ferric salts are reduced to ferrous salts , Fe2 (SO4 ) 3 + Fe = 3FeSO4 ; and (3) the free acid in the solution reacts. with metallic iron to produce ferrous sulfate , H2SO4 + Fe = H2 + FeSO4 . = Because of the reported high.consumption of iron (5 to 6 pounds per pound of copper precipitated ), when copper in water from the Hornet mine of the Mountain Copper Co. ( California ) was precipitated upon scrap iron , a series of tests was made to determine . the . optimum treatment, time , and consumption of iron .

The production of single crystal (SX) turbine blades represents the current stateof- the-art in Ni-based superalloy design. With complex casting processes and alloy composition modifications, SX superalloys exhibit superior high temperature mechanical properties to their polycrystalline counterparts. Stresses and plastic deformation can occur in SX nickel-base superalloy engine components at various stages during their manufacture and use. For examples, stresses are created during initial solidification and also during solid state processing such as shot peening, grit blasting, blending, electrodischarge machining and welding. Stresses may also be created during service due to random events such as foreign object impacts. Subsequent exposure of SX to high temperatures during solution heat treatment and brazing repair can result in recrystallization which has been shown to be detrimental to both creep rupture strength and fatigue performance of the components. It is therefore the objective of this paper to understand the recrystallization behavior of two SX superalloys, PWA 1484 and 1483, subjected to pre-stressing and subsequent heat treatments.

Room-and-pillar mining is a mining method used in the United States to extract coal from underground, and pillar recovery is widely practiced for maximizing coal recovery and mining economics. Under certain conditions, room-and-pillar mining can create high stresses in coal pillars resulting in a coal outburst. These outbursts represent one of the more severe safety hazards in underground coal mines, potentially causing injuries and fatalities. Over the past ten years, coal outbursts have resulted in three fatalities in U.S. room-and-pillar mines. Though coal outbursts generally occur under deep cover, they are more likely to occur during pillar recovery and under multiple-seam mining conditions. Coal outbursts are generally associated with strong roof and floor and heavy loading of coal pillars, but it is difficult to predict whether, where, and when they will occur. In this respect, risk management provides a proactive tool to prevent coal outbursts in room-and-pillar mining by identifying mining areas with high risk of outburst and mitigating the risk accordingly.

One characteristic of plastic deformation which distinguishes it from elastic strain is the essential inhomo-geneity of plastic strains. Elastic strain varies continuously through a material, and average relative displacements of initially adjacent atoms are only small fractions of their initial spacing, (strains of the order of 0.01 or less). On the other hand, plastic flow corresponds to the appearance of discontinuities in strain of the lattice, such as dislocations or slip bands, where local strain, on an atomic scale, is several orders of magnitude higher. These discontinuities are visible on a microscopic scale as the familiar slip lines (Fig 1). In spite of this obvious microscopic inhomogeneity, however, macroscopic measurements almost invariably show a smooth curve of stress vs. strain (Fig 2b) even if measurements of linear strains be made to an accuracy of one part in 107. This macroscopic homogeneity of strain indicates that the discontinuities in strain on slip planes occur in increments too small or too slow to be recorded individually, and further that they occur sufficiently independent of one another so that the small increments add at random to a smooth stress-strain curve. The present paper describes observations of plastic strain in aluminum of commercial purity and in high purity Al-Cu alloys, where there exists a strong coupling between slip in various regions of the specimen such that once initiated it spreads rapidly through a large volume. The total effect is that of relatively large, rapid, and regularly spaced steps of strain followed by periods of only elastic strain. Fig 2a illustrates the type of "stair-step" stress-strain curve which results. The properties of this cooperative slip phenomenon will be described further in the section on results: in par- ticular it will be shown that each step corresponds to the propagation of a wave of plastic deformation through the specimen. Some interpretations of the mechanism by which it occurs will be made in the following section. Although the type of plastic wave phenomena to be described has not previously been reported, there are numerous cases of related effects in the plastic yielding of metals: YIELD POINT PHENOMENA The most familiar of such effects is the "yield point" observed in low carbon steels, brass, duralurninum, and the like. It consists in the sudden termination of the elastic portion of the stress-strain curve by a large plastic strain. Since the usual tensile machine is such that yielding of the specimen relieves the load, the resulting curve is as shown in Fig 3. As the strain continues, deformation occurs at a lower stress for some time, then follows a rising curve, but with no further sudden yielding. This effect has been observed in brass by Sachs and Shojil and later by many others. Edwards, Phillips and Jones2 made extensive studies of the effect in steel, and of the role of various alloying elements. Although there seems to be fairly clear evidence that the yield point is caused by a hardening of the material by precipitation of impurities, no satisfactory explanation for the sudden yielding has been given. Winlock and Leiter3 have shown that the strain. level of the upper yield point depends strongly on the rate of loading, the yield point increasing by almost a fac- tor of two as the strain rate goes from 0.002 in. per in. per min. to 4.4 in. per in. per min. This effect would seem to imply an incubation period before yielding is initiated at a certain stress. On the other hand, by going to very slow loading rates, Edwards, Phillips and Jones2 showed that the yield point does not become lower and eventually disappear as might be expected, but, on the contrary, begins to rise at loading rates below about 25 Ib per in. per min. becoming much higher than at rapid loading rates. STRAIN AGING If, instead of continuing straining of a specimen after occurrence of a yield point, the load is removed and the specimen aged, resumption of the test results in occurrence of another yield point as shown by the dotted curve of Fig 3. The new yield stress is generally higher than the previous maximum applied stress. This hardening of the material by straining and subsequent aging is undoubtedly related to quench age-hardening resulting from the aging of a specimen quenched from high temperature. Since neither effect is observed in pure metals, it is generally accepted that quench-aging in all cases is the result of hardening by precipitation of a supersaturated alloying element, and that strain-aging is probably a similar precipitation, accelerated by disruptions of the lattice by previous strain. Pfeil4 has shown that strain-aging does not occur in iron from which all of the carbon has been removed, but that only a very small carbon content, around 0.003 pct, is necessary to cause strain-aging. In accord with this observation is recent work by Dijkstra5 in this laboratory showing that the solubility limit of carbon in iron is extremely low, less than 0.001 pct at 400°C. Edwards, Phillips and Jones2 have shown that the strain-aging effect is also removed by the addition of small quantities of elements such as Mo, Mn, Ti, and the like, which readily form carbides. The Morley Coal Measures (Upper Cretaceous) at Ohai Coalfield were deposited in an intermontane basin alluvial environment of entirely terrestrial aspect. Within this regional setting, three distinct types of depositional environment are recognised; these are: (i) a sand-dominated (South Saskatchewan type) braided river system characterized by channel-bed dunes and possibly compound bars; (ii) a well-drained floodplain environment frequently subject to crevasse-splay and overbank-flow sedimentation; and (iii) a poorly-drained, commonly peat-accumulating backswamp environment locally traversed by tributary drainage systems and occasionally inundated by crevasse splays and overbank flows. All major coal seams of the Morley Coal Measures originated within forest moors under predominantly telmatic (periodically inundated) conditions. The peat-forming vegetation comprised largely arborescent forms (dominantly conifers), in addition to pteridophytes and bryophytes. In-seam vertical variations in coal type indicate groundwater levels initially decreased and then increased during the lifetime of a particular peat swamp, possibly in response to a change in the migration direction of an adjacent fluvial system. The proposed depositional model for the Morley Coal Measures has the potential to be utilised during exploration programmes and mine development to impart greater objectivity to predictions concerning seam geometry and continuity, trends in coal type and quality, and likely roof and floor conditions.

PROGRESSIVE industrial organizations have recognized the importance of maintaining an adequate reference library of volumes covering all phases of their particular branch of industry, but it has been the experience of the writer that few engineers know how to use to the best advantage this store of extremely -valuable information which has been accumulated for their service. Nor does the average engineer appreciate the fact that it is only through the current technical literature that he can keep abreast of the rapidly developing fields of engineering. The present-day ramifications of the engineering field are of such wide scope that the human mind is not capable of storing away more than a small fraction of the information available on any particular topie; yet, from time ? to time, such information would prove invaluable. An engineer can know intimately only a small part of his own branch of engineering; but he cannot afford to neglect to take the fullest possible advantage of all that is already known in his own particular field. Technical information may be obtained by one or more of the following methods: (1) by enquiring of the individual who knows; (2) by performing the experimental investigations necessary to ascertain the facts; (3) by consulting the technical literature, where a record may be found of the work of others. This last method is the one we wish to examine. Our main consideration is the question of how to use the library, but first it is necessary to give some attention to the kind of enquiries one takes to the library, and to the nature of the sources of information available.
