The United Status Bureau of Mines has recently collected samples of crude petroleum from well] in the newly developed Joiner, Kilgore, and Longview fields of Rusk and Gregg Counties in the East Texas district, and from the Van field of the East Central district of Texas. East Texas Cruder The four samples of crude oil from the East Texas fields are all typical "intermediate base" crudes according to the classification given by Smith and Lane. 3 Sample 31,063 is from the discovery well in the Joiner field. This well came in on October 3, 1930, with an initial production of 400 barrels per day. Sample 31,062 was obtained from a well that was completed on February 1, 1931, with an initial production of 3,500 barrels per day. The 32 East Texas crudes are produced at an average depth of approximately 3,600 feet. which is the deepest Woodgine-sand production so far encountered in any of the Texas or Louisiana fields.

The demand for rare earth elements for everyday technology and applications has initiated much research into the extraction and recovery of these rare earth elements. An otherwise unknown group of minerals, eudialyte is a zircon silicate consisting of rare earth oxides (REO), contained in a unique mineral structure and represented by a complex chemical formula. Research into extraction and recovery of rare earth elements involves various beneficiation and hydrometallurgical techniques. The goal of beneficiation being to efficiently liberate and upgrade the REO content, followed by hydrometallurgy to extract the desired elements. This overview will discuss previous research on treating eudialyte group minerals via different mineral processing and extraction techniques.

The reduction of metallic ores to concentrate consumes a great deal of electrical energy. In the past two decades, a number of case studies have demonstrated a beneficial relationship between powder factor and grindability. However, changes in mill performance cannot be attributed to changes in feed size alone. Blasting energy and the distribution of that energy appears to affect subsequent comminution beyond crushing. This experience has prompted researchers to attempt to duplicate and quantify the mechanisms involved. To date, published reports indicate a measure of success. However, the blast engineer and the mill engineer still lack the tools and basic understanding necessary for full drill to mill optimization.

An elongate belt containing granodiorite stocks with associated stockwork molybdenum mineralisation in west Nelson is correlated with the I-type Separation Point Suite of mid Cretaceous age. Trace element characteristics of the 'Mo-granites', and the Separation Point Batholith strongly suggest a primitive, subcrustal origin for these granitoids, by partial melting of oceanic basaltic crust or upper mantle material in a subduction zone. They were emplaced in the upper crust without undergoing significant differentiation or contamination by sialic crust. Molybdenum, which is at levels of approximately 5 ppm in unaltered granite, is not significantly reduced in altered (but unmineralised) granite. This suggests the metallisation has a magmatic, subcrustal source and is not derived by hydrothermal leaching of upper crustal rocks or the granitic host rocks. Geochemistry of the 'Mo-granite' belt, in particular low K2O, calc-alkali to calcic Peacock Index, high Sr and TiO2, and low Rb, Nb and F, suggest classification as calcic granitoids similar to those which host porphyry copper deposits, indicating grades of mineralisation are likely to be low.

The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4 km (6.5 mi) long, 14.4 m (47.5 ft)bored tunnel that will run under the City of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck Power Station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck Power Station by adding 500 m3 (17,657 ft3) of water per second through the tunnel. The paper describes the project in which the world’s largest hard rock TBM at14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter is being used to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a High Performance (HP) Main Beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area. The paper will also discuss the optimization of the TBM system as the tunnel advances through the varying geology. In June 2004 the Ontario Government announced that Ontario Power Generation(OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls—the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill and blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4 km (6.5 mi) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG announced the selection of Strabag AG of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP Project at a price of CAN $600 million. In September 2005, Strabag A.G. selected The Robbins Company of Solon, Ohio to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4 m (47.5 ft) diameter High Performance state-of-the-art Main Beam Hard Rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. In order to meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be supplied as “ready to bore” within a 12 month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.

The Magruder and Chambers copper deposits in the Little River gold district, on the border line of Lincoln and Wilkes Counties, Georgia, have been known for a number of years (fig. 1). The Magruder deposit was first opened as a gold mine but has produced mostly copper and load. Records show that about 50 cars of concentrates were shipped from this property. No record of any production at the Chambers deposit is available. The Bureau of Mines, in its program of investigation of strategic minerals deposits, diamond drilled 10 holes, totaling 3,784 feet, on the two properties between December 3, 1948, and June 23, 1949. Eighty-eight core samples were analyzed, and the analyses and drill-hole data are presented in this report.

INCREASING attention has been given in the last decade to the possibilities of mine leasing in the West. The practice as described in this article does not refer to the leasing of entire properties for corporate operation. It is intended to deal rather with the advantages and problems incident to leasing portions of properties to individuals who themselves, individually or in groups, do the actual mining and transportation of the ore. These individuals are sometimes called "leasers" and sometimes called "tributors." The contracts under which they work set up an independent relationship of lessor and leaser, between themselves and the mineowner or operator. This relationship has many advantages to both sides over those created by the ordinary relationship of employer and employe. From the standpoint of the owners there is no liability on independent contractors for industrial injuries, social security taxes, unemployment taxes, or the manifold restrictions of the Federal Labor Relations and Wage Hour Acts and similar state acts where they exist. As the leaser's income depends on the quantity and quality of ore produced, there is a distinct incentive for maximum production of a good grade of ore. This in turn promotes careful mining of the areas under lease. Ordinarily in mining, labor cost is a high percentage of the total cost of operation. Under a leasing system, even if the leasers be allowed to retain half of the gross values that they produce, and the owner or operator gets half, in the case of marginal ore bodies this is ordinarily more than the lessor would realize if the property were worked by day labor. Brohm Mining Corporation, in conjunction with Geobiotics, Inc. has nearly completed a pilot heap biooxidation test on sulfidic ore from the Gilt Edge Mine near Rapid City, South Dakota. Some results from the pilot testing have shown the correlation between the extent of biooxidation and the increase in cyanide gold recovery seen in the laboratory. Bench scale testing showed approximately a 1: 1 correspondence between percent biooxidation and percentage increase in gold recovery. The economics of large scale biooxidation were also evaluated in terms of increased gold recovery versus the time and cost of biooxidation. In the pilot test, the rate of biooxidation became limited by the acid water neutralization system. Later in the test, measures were taken to overcome this problem. Results from bench scale column bioleach testing showed that the Gilt Edge sulfide ore is quite amenable to biooxidation with a substantial increase in gold recovery with just partial biooxidation. Direct cyanide gold recovery of 51 % on ore crushed to -3/8" was enhanced to 82-85% after oxidation of37% of the sulfide as measured by iron. Laboratory experiments also showed that the slow rate of biooxidation of this ore could be accelerated by removal of metal sulfate build up from the leach liquor. The combination of these normally non-toxic metals became inhibitory to biooxidation if not removed by the neutralization circuit.

"Absolute magnetite contents were determined for asbestos specimens in various stages of milling by using a Faraday-type thermomagnetic balance. Comparison of these results with magnetic ratings (MR) supplied by the mining companies cooperating in this study reveals strong scatter. The main cause of this scatter is thought to be that the MR values were obtained in magnetic fields well below the saturating field of magnetite (5,000 oe). However, only the saturation moment is an intrinsic property and consequently must be used for the purpose of obtaining reliable estimates of the magnetite content. Curie points indicate that virtually pure magnetite and possibly Ni3Fe is present in all samples, and another phase, probably (Cr, Al) magnetite, is present in a few samples. The susceptibility in fields stronger than 5,000 oe is positive and falls in the normal paramagnetic range, whereas sy nthetic chrysotile exhibits weak diamagnetism. This suggests that, as a general rule, the least adulterated natural chrysotile concurs with the samples showing the smallest positive susceptibility above 5,000 oe. The magnetite appears to increase in quantity with a decrease in fibre length and to be somewhat more uniform in distribution for samples showing substantial fiberization (opening of the fibres)."

Continuous operating performance and high profit is one of the major concerns in the mining industry. Information systems are expected to reinforce and enable conformance to these requirements. The companion efforts of business management and production information systems press for tighter integration to avoid over-laps, multiple instances of similar data, and expensive maintenance of databases. Implementation of advanced intelligent systems throughout a mine operation can reduce costs, optimize investment and create a shorter payback via conversion of the data accumulated by field and process devices into information, and subsequently, into decisions. However, in order to harness the potential power inherent in these intelligent devices, adequate and flexible modular knowledge-based solutions are required. Fortunately, there has been at least one such practical response to this challenge, namely the ABB IndustrialIT portfolio. With these tools in place, production efficiency is reached via integration of process, production, and quality information. Moreover, they permit immediate detection and remedial action to changes to process and boundary condition variables. Finally, using advanced optimization techniques supported by dedicated mathematical models, they allow for economic process optimization (process set points and coordination thereof, energy management, production planning, energy supply contract optimization, etc) of the plant as a whole.

This paper shows the potential of a new computer model, using the Glowe-Tech (GT) Tonnage Analyzer program to compare drilling and blasting results. This model uses the crushers and conveyors as measuring tools in aggregate quarries in the USA and Canada. All data is collected using commercially available kilowatt transducers and an analog input/output automation module. There are two areas of measurement used to compare results. The first area is the tonnage moved by key conveyors to show the split in products produced and the actual rate of production. If belt scale readings are not available then the Glowe-Tech Tonnage Analyzer can be used to convert kilowatts from the conveyor motor to tonnage. The second is the tons of rock crushed per kilowatt hour of energy consumption by the primary and secondary (optional) crushers. This modeling process works best if blasts are mucked and crushed in sequence. There are many other variables such as crusher types, crusher settings, screen sizing and actual geology in the pit that can influence the results, however if variables can be standardized then definite trends can be seen when comparing drilling and blasting results

The synthesis process of BaTiO3 from TiO2 and BaCO3 in the molten NaOH-KOH at 350oC was studied by the A.C impedance technique. The A.C. impedance of molten NaOH-KOH (xNaOH = 0.36) and the variation of the conductivity of the salt with time during the synthesized process were measured. The synthesized reaction of the BaTiO3 and the decomposition reaction of BaCO3 are fast and were finished in 10min. The interaction between TiO2, BaO and BaTiO3 and the molten salt was confirmed by the variation of the conductivity.

Sublevel caving (SLC) is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of blasted ore and caved waste rock. Production blasting has significant impact on the efficiency and productivity of SLC output, affecting material fragmentation, flow and recovery. Misfires could occur during blasting in SLC, which results in the loss of explosives and poor fragmentation. Usually, the blastholes are top-initiated with redundant lower primers set at + 25 ms as a precaution. If the top primers fail, the lower primers may initiate the explosive, which will induce out-of-sequence delays that can influence fragmentation and gravity flow. This work investigated the impact of misfires and out-ofsequence delays on fragmentation and gravity flow through numerical simulations using a coupled finite element and discrete element method. Different scenarios of misfires and out-of-sequence delays were studied, and the fragment size distribution was obtained to evaluate the blasting performance. The material flow behaviour was investigated to assess the gravity flow process. The results indicated that misfires significantly affect the fragmentation and the gravity flow process while the effects of out-of-sequence delays are not so significant for the investigated cases

Removal of As(III) and As(V) in Aqueous Solution There are toxic arsenical species such as As(III) and As(V), and arsenious species have specially strong toxicity. The strong toxicity causes contamination of groundwater and water pollution for the semiconductor production process. This study is concerned with the removal of As(III) and As(V) with various kinds of Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing CO32-, SO42-, Cl- and NO3- as interlayer anionic species. The anion exchange property is different from the kind of layered double hydroxides and the Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is superior in the anion exchange property of As(III) and As(V) due to the nature of nitrate ion existing in the interlayer. The pH condition suitable for As(V) removal is 7.1 or more. If the initial conditions such as 10mg/dm3 of As(V) concentration, 7.1 of pH, 1 m3 of amount of solution and 99 per cent of removal are fixed, the required amount of Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is 0.27kg for two step-batch operations. The As(III) is suitable to oxidize to As(V) before the removal processing.

(Spokane Meeting, September, 1909.) DURING. the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, Mining, and preparation of barite in most. of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described ; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract., including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors .2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.3 The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but. the product, is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain &. Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St.. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. "Mining companies strive to increase and maintain production, while simultaneously remaining competitive in the global economy. Furthermore, they must ensure workers’ safety and maintain good safety records. The use of virtual reality (VR) facilitates the development of tools and systems for various purposes that can improve knowledge and understanding of the work environment. VR is a rapidly growing technology that uses the ever-increasing power of computing to simulate real-world and imaginary environments and situations with a high degree of realism and interaction. The availability of 3D modelling tools and simulation programming engines that work effectively with a mid-range desktop PC and standard 3D graphics card, make VR technology viable and attractive for mainstream training applications. The design, development, and implementation of interactive VR training systems is proposed as an innovative approach to augment safety training. However, in order to assess the impact of such VR training systems it is of particular importance to determine the effectiveness of the design of such systems. This article proposes an evaluation framework for this vital purpose. This framework comprises criteria to assess VR training systems, specifically relating to usability, instructional design, VR systems design, and mining industry context-specific aspects. Although the framework was developed as an evaluation tool to assess effectiveness of the design of such systems, it can equally well be used as a set of design principles to inform the design of VR training systems for mining. IntroductionMining in South Africa has been the main driving force behind the history and development of Africa’s richest and most advanced economy (Coka, 2012). The South African mining industry is frequently criticised for its poor safety record and high fatality rate (Stoddard and Skweyiya, 2016). Inadequate or insufficient training is often cited as a root cause of accidents (Van Wyk and De Villiers, 2009; Tichon and Burgess-Limerick, 2011). Virtual reality (VR) is a rapidly growing technology that utilizes the ever-increasing power of computing to simulate real-world and imaginary environments and situations with a high degree of realism and interaction (Webber-Youngman and Van Wyk, 2013). VR is currently being used or investigated as a training solution in a variety of industries. VR technology has developed rapidly and costs have fallen to levels where it can now be considered for mainstream training applications. The availability of 3D modelling tools and simulation programming engines that work effectively with a mid-range desktop PC and a standard 3D graphics card, make VR even more attractive to mine training centres (Van Wyk and De Villiers, 2009)."

The paper considers performance of piles supporting transient pipe anchors in heavy industrial pipelines. Events such as pump trips or opening and closing of large valves produce short-term dynamic pulses in the pipeline with variable spectral characteristics. Their magnitude is large enough to cause major damage to the pipeline and its anchors, which face horizontal impact loads amounting to hundreds of kN. Design of pile foundations supporting these anchors is often governed by limitation of deflection of the support to prevent overstressing pipeline connections and equipment nozzles. The maximum deflection does not always correspond to the largest load because the stiffness of the soil surrounding the piles heavily depends on the rate of loading. Faster actions encounter stiffer soil response while loads of smaller magnitude applied slowly may be more critical for the deflection time history of the anchor. A typical transient action has both high- and low-frequency harmonics, which makes the response complex. Using load rate-dependent p-y curves published in literature, the paper develops methods of analysis of pile foundations for transient anchors. Pile displacement amplitude – input frequency – natural frequency correlations and time histories of pile response are constructed for typical profiles of transient actions, considering nonlinear soil response to large horizontal loads.

Underground mine fires remain a concern for mine operators, posing a health and safety risk to mineworkers. In the last decade, the number of mine fires has decreased significantly. However, dealing with an unknown fire in underground mines can be a challenging task, which could lead to a hazardous condition for miners during an evacuation and rescue operation. A timely detection of a mine fire and monitoring its characteristics—namely, size and location—are of great importance in reducing the risk of mine fire injuries. A new, improved fire location algorithm has been developed and integrated into an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) program by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This paper describes the new fire location model and presents the results of verification fire tests conducted at the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) facility of the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) using the collected AMS data. NIOSH is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve the detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions in mines. The results demonstrate successful application of the improved fire location model and provide a useful tool for solving the problem of unknown fire location and reducing the risk of hazardous conditions.

"Mechanical behavior of rock joints is often the key factor governing the response of complex structures constructed in fractured rock masses such as underground openings or of objects assembling various stones blocks such as historical building walls or damaged marble statues. This paper aims at developing a theoretical model to describe the behavior of fresh joints based on the description of their morphology. The main idea of the model is to establish a link between the effective contact surface of joints and the frictional coefficient. Beginning from a chosen level of joint surface description where a joint is considered as “smooth”, the model describes the added friction with respect to the increase of the contact surface of the joints and the distribution of stress in these contacts. The model developed initially for asperities with regular geometry is firstly compared with existing models and then applied on fresh artificial joints. For that, healthy artificial joints have been characterised using in one hand classical CNL shearing tests and in another hand the morphology of joints. The joints surfaces are digitized before testing using a high resolution laser scanner (Konica Minelota Vivid 910) allowing to obtain a precision up to 10µm. From these scanned surfaces the morphology of joints is characterised on the profiles running in the direction of shearing and a mean value of friction is calculated using the developed model. This calculated value is then compared with that obtained from CNL shearing test and a good approximation is notedINTRODUCTIONThe role of the mechanical behavior of rock joints on the overall response of fractured rock masses is well established in many fields of engineering activity going from the stability of underground constructions (Souley M, Hoxha D, Homand F 1999), rock slope stability (Einstein H.H. Veneziano D., Baecher GB., O’Reilly K.J, 1983, Jaeger 1971), various rehabilitation of masonry construction, damaged stone artworks restoration (Michel L., Do D.P, Coignard B, Hoxha, 2014) and so on. In the same time the characterisation of the behavior of joints and their modeling is nowadays a dynamic field of research or/and investigations and many alternative approaches have been proposed (Barton, N.R. and Choubey, V. 1977, Tatone, S.A. Bryan, Grasselli Giovanni 2010, William C E. 2007). While empirical relations of shear strength with various parameters of the joint morphology are the most used in practice because of their simplicity (Barton. and Choubey, 1977, Barton 1973, Bandis S., Lumsden A. C. and Barton N. R. 1983) many other models of joint strength are developed based on mechanistic considerations (Haberfield CM, Johnston IW. 1994), multiscale approaches (Yang Z.Y., Di C.C., Yen K.C. 2001, Fardin N., O. Stephansson, Lanru Jing 2001) or micromechanical ones (A. Serrano, C. Olalla, R.A. Galindo 2014) to mention just a few of research trends on rock joints modeling."
