"The effect of red mud on the melting behavior of ferronickel slag was investigated by a laboratory-scale horizontal tube furnace. Melting and softening of slag samples fluxed with different amount of red mud was examined by in-situ visualization technique at temperature range from 1400 to 1550°C. FactSageTM 7.0 was used for the thermodynamic calculation of multi component system of ferronickel slag and red mud. Liquid phase area was extended to lower temperature by adding red mud indicating its suitability as a flux material. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the dependency of the phase changes on the red mud content. Microscopic observation by scanning electron microscope (SEM / EDX) clarified the phase transformations from olivine to spinel along with red mud additions.INTRODUCTION Ferronickel smelting by submerged arc furnace (SAF) is an energy intensive process performed at high temperature range 1500–1600°C. During the smelting process of saprolitic nickel laterite ore with a nickel content of 2.2–2.3 pct, a large quantity of ferronickel slag is being produced that account for 97 pct of ore charged. To achieve ferronickel grade of 15–20 pct Ni, electrical energy of 80 to 85 MW is used for the melting and reduction of nickel oxide (NiO) and iron oxide (FeO) in the ore (Rodd et al., 2010). Unreduced components, mostly MgO, SiO2 and partly FeO are removed from the furnace in a liquid slag form by a tapping operation. Due to the high melting temperature, forsterite (Mg2SiO4) based slag containing approximately 10 pct FeO requires typical process temperature of 1600°C. Flux in metallurgical process is a medium that decreases melting and operating temperatures while it increases fluidity of the liquid slags. Calcite and fluorite are examples of flux materials used for the ironmaking, steel refining and continuous casting process. Oxide systems based on CaO - CaF2 - SiO2 - Al2O3 - MgO cover most of the slag composition in ferrous metallurgy accordingly. Crucial operating factors for ironmaking and steelmaking slags are basicity (typically CaO/SiO2 ratio), viscosity and impurity levels. These are extensively controlled by the fluxes. General metallurgical fluxes such as limestone, dolomite and calcium fluoride are abundant in nature and supplied to steel mills at low prices. Meanwhile, in copper flash smelting process, silica is supplied with copper concentrate to remove iron oxide (FeO) generated from sulfide oxidation. FeO - SiO2 binary system formulates eutectic area at 25–38 pct of silica that has low melting temperature below 1205°C. Fayalitic system (Fe2SiO4) that has low viscosity (0.1 Pa·s) (Park et al., 2011) facilitates easy separation of slags from molten sulfide mattes. Recently, copper plants actively utilize recycled raw materials as a flux. Various recycled glasses are ground and fed to copper smelting process as a partial replacement of silica ore. Applying industrial wastes to smelting processes is advantageous since the operators can reduce the production cost remarkably. Not to mention the consumption of recycled materials can ultimately minimize the environmental risks and the waste management costs. The authors, therefore, investigated the reasonable waste materials that can be effectively used for ferronickel smelting process. Prerequisites for potential fluxing materials are non-recyclable property, low transportation cost and excellent performance as a flux."

Alloys of manganese and copper containing from 65 to 80 percent manganese possess mechanical strength and vibration-damping capacity in an unusually high degree. The success of their use in reducing vibration in structures depends, to some extent, on their fatigue properties. This report describes the results of fatigue tests on alloys of four compositions. Three metallurgical conditions were investigated for each alloy. Or the basis of the data in this report, the general rule that vibration-damping manganese-copper alloys are comparable to mild steel in hardness and strength may be extended to include fatigue strength. Methods for casting and fabricating these alloys were described in a previous report,4 which contained data on the mechanical and damping properties of the solid-solution alloys, and on alloys aged for 2 hours at 450° C. The aging heat treatment of solution-treated alloys results in optimum mechanical and damping properties throughout the range of specified composition. However, in the present work, measurements also were made on alloys aged for 2 hours at 500° C., because it was theorized that the additional precipitation of a-manganese under these conditions might have a pronounced effect on the fatigue strength of the alloy.

The oil industry in the United States is further advanced than in any other country, because of American initiative and the development of industries dependent in some way on petroleum or its products. For this reason the output has constantly increased (fig. 1), and as a result this country has produced more than half of the total output of the world. Trw total past output of the world is approximately 7,000,000,000 barrels of 42 gallons each; of this the United States produced about 4,000,000,000 barrels, or about 57 per cent. The limit of production in this country is being approached, however, and although new fields undoubtedly await discovery, the yearly outpnt must inevitably decline, because the maintenance of a given output each year necessitates the drilling of an increasing number of wells. Such an increase becomes impossible after a certain point is reached, not only because of a lack of acreage to be drilled, but because of the great number of wells that will ultimately have to be drilled. According to figure 1, the daily production per well each year has increased during the last few years. However, this increase is abnormal, being caused by the new pools brought in. Although such a condition may continue for several years, the average production per well will finally begin to decrease on account of the lack of new pools to make up for the normal decline in production of the old ones.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Geological concepts are employed routinely in porphyry copper exploration at the area selection, prospect appraisal and deposit definition stages. Regional, district-scale, deposit-scale and laboratory-based concepts can all play a role, with the resulting porphyry copper models providing templates for the integration of geochemical and geophysical responses and interpretations. Of the 19 concepts and parameters selected for brief discussion, those relating to subdivision of porphyry intrusions, understanding of diverse and commonly complex alteration-mineralisation patterns and lithocap characterisation are undoubtedly the most influential in exploration. Several of them are of particular importance because of their role in promoting grade development. Additional belt-, district- and deposit-scale features are currently little used but hold promise, whereas others have less practical value but help in underpinning the evolving porphyry copper genetic model.CITATION:Sillitoe, R H, 2015. For purposes of coal classification it is desirable to know the composition and calorific value of the pure coal substance; that is, of the coal free from its ash-forming minerals. Two methods suggest themselves: (1) To free the coal from most of the ash-forming material previous to the analysis; and (2) to analyze the coal as received and calculate the analysis, with certain more or less arbitrary corrections, to the pure-coal basis. Calculation methods are obviously more apt to give correct results with low-ash than high-ash coals. With coals of unusually high ash it would appear preferable to remove, previous to the analysis, as much of the inorganic matter as possible, by float-and-sink or acid-treating methods. Effect of Ignition on Inorganic Constituents of Coal The need of corrections in calculating analysis to the pure-coal basis is due to the fact that the ash, as determined by ignition, is not the same, in either weight or composition, as the inorganic mineral matter in the coal. On ignition a number of changes occur in the coal such as loss of water of hydration of the shaly material, conversion of pyrite (FeS2) to ferric oxide (Fe203) with evolution of the sulfur as sulfur dioxide or possible fixation of more or less of the sulfur in the ash as calcium sulfate (CaSO4), and decomposition of calcite (CaC03) to calcium oxide (CaO). The amount of sulfur from pyrite which remains in the ash as calcium sulfate depends on the amount of calcite and pyrite in the coal. Certain coals high in both calcite and pyrite show relatively large amounts of sulfate sulfur in the coal ash. The determination of total carbon and hydrogen in coal includes, besides the organic carbon and hydrogen, the carbon of inorganic carbonates such as calcite, and the hydrogen of the water of composition of some of the ash-forming minerals. Unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in 69% of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground U.S. stone mines from 1990 to 1996. Field investigations at 45 underground stone mines suggest that excessive beam sag or deflection is the principal unstable roof behavior characteristics associated with miner injuries. Laminated roof structures, common in most underground stone mines, allow the immediate roof to separate into distinct beams. The timely determination of roof beam deflection could provide stone miners with advanced knowledge of potentially hazardous roof. Existing methods to assess roof conditions consist of observational and monitoring techniques. Observational techniques include open drillholes, sounding, wedging, and borescopes. Monitoring techniques include scratch tools, extensometers, telltales, Miners Helpers, and Guardian Angels. 1 Miners have difficulty utilizing these techniques because roof beams are located an average of 8 m (26.5 ft) above the miner's head in environments that are dark, dusty and noisy and these deflections are measured in millimeters of movement. To help mitigate the potential for falls of ground injuries to underground stone miners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed the Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) to aid in monitoring dangerous levels of roof beam deflection. If enough site-specific information is collected and placed on highly visible maps, individual mining operations could establish general guidelines for responding to specific roof beam deflection occurrences. This would help in implementing a pro-active, comprehensive roof control plan for reducing falls of ground injuries.

Risk lies at the heart of all mining and nowhere more so than in pit slope design. Mining is principally about two areas of risk; safety and economics. This paper addresses the main elements of pit slope design and presents a view of the state of the art in terms of safety, design, prediction of performance, success and pit slope management. There has been a recent trend for serious injury and fatalities due to stability in open pit mines. The causes and contributing factors are analysed in relation to geotechnical knowledge, pit slope design and management. Currently there is no standard classification system for mine slope designs and it is considered doubtful if a universal system is possible. Designs are usually formulated in accordance with many different methodologies, various engineering principals and a number of different philosophical approaches, with results often presented in terms of Factors of Safety or Probabilities of Failure. However wide experience has demonstrated that even with apparently detailed engineering investigation and analysis at Feasibility Level, at the Operating Stage mine slope angles are regularly subject to large changes. The general experience is that these changes are ± 5° and 16° overall, which is considerably outside the accepted order of accuracy. For large deep mines these are huge changes and represent significant risks to the operations. The current state of practice in pit slope design is examined for two stages, feasibility and operating.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines-Michigan Technological University mine ventilation mainframe program was successfully adapted for execution in a personal computer (PC). The hardware requirement can be as modest as 256 kilobytes (33) of random access memory (RM) and two floppy disk drives. A version compiled for a PC possessing 512 Kb RAM has arrays dimensioned to accommodate 512 separate mine airways and junctions, and it contains all the features and capabilities of the original version. It has successfully analyzed all the ventilation networks tested, including a very large commercial mine (404 airways, 237 junctions, and 5 fans). In all cases the PC version produced practically identical results as obtained from the mainframe computer. In all respects, the PC version performed the same as the mainframe version with the exception of execution speed When a numerical coprocessor is employed, execution time can be reduced by more than 50%.

This publication describes an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines regarding the cause of an explosion of a dephlegmator or fractionating column at the Cities Service Oil Company Refinery, Ponca City, Okla., January 22, 1959. The column was that used with the refinery's No.1 Dubbs Coker. The explosion caused the death of an employee of the refinery and resulted in extensive damage to the refinery and to nearby property. The Bureau's study of the explosion began January 26.

Dry separation of iron ore fines and other heavy minerals has previously been achieved using one of two main approaches. The first is an inclined table with an upward airflow via small holes to help form an autogenous dense medium. The second is based on fluidised beds comprising a dense medium formed by fine particles suspended in an upward flow of air. In either case, vibration can be introduced. This paper describes recent findings using a novel system referred to as the Sink-Hole Fluidiser, which utilises elements of both these two former approaches. This device consists of a conventional gas-fluidised bed of fine medium with a 1 mm aperture mesh located at the surface. This mesh contains relatively large holes that act as sink-holes. The fluidised media flows upwards through the sink-holes and then falls back into the fluidised bed via the fine apertures in the mesh. The particles being separated, which are much larger than the fine media, pass over these sink-holes, where they either sink or float. The sink-holes offer a more precise balance of forces, applied on a single particle basis, resulting in robust density separation.Experiments have been performed using 2.0–4.0 mm tracer particles of density varying from 2.4 to 4.8 relative densities (RD) separated in a 200 mm diameter Sink-Hole Fluidiser with a single 13 mm diameter centrally-located sink-hole. In this preliminary semi-batch work, it was found that the Sink-Hole Fluidiser was able to achieve sharp separations (Ep as low as 0.20). This work underpins the development of a new continuous steady-state Sink-Hole Fluidiser, applicable to the dry separation of iron ore fines.CITATION:Kumar, D, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. El presente trabajo describe el proceso de mineralización de plata en rocas estratificadas del Paleozoico Inferior en el distrito de Santa Rosa, departamento de Cerro de Pasco. Dicha provincia metalogénetica posee las siguientes característicias: vetas en fillitas y cuarcitas que en otras provincias metalogenéticas no son favorables a la mlneralización; asociación de minerales de alta y baja temperatura mezclados como estanita, marmanita, pirrotita; poca fugacidad de azufre en la solución mineralizante, alta temperatura; baja presión en la mineralización del yacimiento, y su alta ley de plata en los cuerpos mineralizados dentro de las estructuras mineralizadas. En este sentido y dada sus particularidades, el tipo de flujo mineralizante de dicho yacimiento minero resulta ser el más adecuado e importante dentro del proceso de mineralización.

This paper focuses on two sites in the Mount Pleasant - McCormacks Bay area of Christchurch where residential development has taken place either within or immediately adjacent to former quarries for the extraction of volcanic rock. At the Quarry Road site less overburden was dumped on adjoining land around the turn of the century, and c.1980 dwelling and related construction took place on approximately 6 m of relatively loose fill material without the recognition of its presence or geotechnical characteristics. Subsequent settlements led to abandonment of a swimming pool and the underpinning of the 3-storey architect-designed house, whilst litigation brought by the owner resulted in findings of negligence against both the architects and engineers. At the Tramways Quarry site the Council approved subdivision of the former quarry area in the early 1980s without requiring any geotechnical evaluation of batter stability or related issues. During development it became apparent that significant blast damage had occurred to rock faces, necessitating a variety of remedial measures, and that waste materials had been dumped down faces without regard to long-term stability. Both case studies confirm the requirement for careful documentation of former quarry sites by territorial local authorities as part of their administrative function, and for detailed engineering geology and geotechnical evaluation of such areas prior to any residential use of the land.

"In this study, the static lateral resistance of vertical and battered pile groups was analyzed using 3D finite element analysis. The battered pile group finite element model was verified using the results from a case study performed on the M19 pier foundation of the I-10 twin span bridge in Louisiana. The vertical pile group model was created by adjusting pile inclinations of the verified battered pile group model. The finite element models utilized nonlinear constitutive models for materials behavior and a soil-pile interface model. The results showed that the battered pile group had greater lateral resistance than the vertical pile group with 60-70% lower pile cap displacement. The largest lateral load share was found in the middle rows in the battered pile group, while it was in the leading row for the vertical. The soil resistance profiles showed that the vertical pile group mobilized greater soil resistance compared to the battered pile group.INTRODUCTIONThe lateral resistance of a pile-soil system depends on both pile stiffness and soil reaction. The soil reaction is a nonlinear function of deflection, depth, pile stiffness, and soil stiffness and strength. The lateral capacity of single piles is evaluated at the maximum deflection limit, and can be predicted using established methods such as the p-y curve method (e.g., Matlock 1970, Reese et al. 1974), elastic solution by Poulos and Davis (1980), the strain wedge model (Ashour et al. 2004), and the finite element method (e.g., Yang and Jeremic 2002, Comodromos and Pitilakis 2005, Isenhower et al. 2014). For pile groups, the lateral capacity of a pile-in-group is less than the isolated single pile case because the soil in front of the pile-in-group is weakened by the overlap of stress zones from surrounding piles. The latter is referred to as the shadowing or group effect (Fig. 1). Prediction of the lateral capacity for pile groups is based on the p-y curve method for single piles with the use of empirical factors called “p-multipliers”. The p-multipliers accounts for the shadowing effect, and are a function of pile-pile spacing and soil type (e.g., Brown et al. 1987, 1988, McVay et al. 1995). Moreover, the lateral capacity of pile groups is also influenced by vertical load, piles arrangement, and slenderness ratio (e.g., Rao et al. 1998, Patra and Pise 2001, Ilyas et al. 2004, Hussien et al. 2012).Battered piles refer to piles installed at an angle with respect to the vertical to increase their lateral capacity. The greater lateral resistance is achieved by the additional axial reaction in the pile. Battered piles are called “negative battered” when inclined in the load direction, and “positive battered” when inclined opposite to the load direction (Fig. 1). Previous studies concluded that the lateral resistance is highest in positive battered piles followed by negative battered and vertical piles, respectively (Murthy 1964, Meyerhof and Yalcin 1993, Zhang et al. 1999)."

The emergence of Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) in the Canadian mining sector has been read by many as a positive governance innovation. Negotiated directly between mineral resource developers and Aboriginal communities with limited government interference, IBAs serve to manage impacts associated with a mining project and deliver tangible benefits to local communities. Notwithstanding their increasing use and significance, limited systematic analysis has been undertaken to determine whether they are, in fact, working. This paper reports on the effectiveness of a number of IBAs negotiated in support of three northern Canadian diamond mines, drawing on evidence from time-series data, key informant interviews, and focus group meetings in Yellowknife and Dettah, NWT, and Kugluktuk, NU. While some deficiencies were apparent and perceptions of effectiveness varied somewhat by Aboriginal community, the IBAs were generally found to be meeting their objectives, especially with respect to the delivery of benefits. For Aboriginal communities affected by mineral development in the Canadian North, this represents a significant change to typical outcomes of the past. Moving forward, research on IBA effectiveness needs to adopt a longer timeframe and begin to gauge the degree to which IBAs are able to address long-standing concerns associated with hinterland resource extraction beyond their agreement-specific objectives.

"The Yukon's numerous (185) placer gold mines are still a major social and economic force in this developing economy. Gold recovery at each of the various sluiceboxes is not optimized due to extremely difficult sampling logistics and a shortage of technical expertise and industrial research.At each of six operating placer mines, numerous sluicebox tailings samples were collected with hand held sample cutters and combined into large (2-7 cubic yards) duplicate samples. The entire sample volumes were screened and processed on a shaking table to determine gold losses. The Mid-Tennessee Zinc (MTZ) mines, comprised of the Gordonsville, Elmwood, and Cumberland sites, last operated 4 years ago and are undergoing rehabilitation to begin production in 2008. The mines utilize a random room-and-pillar mining method that results in complex ventilation networks. Upon decommissioning, the mechanical ventilation units were removed and disposed of and several shafts sealed. In an effort to re-open the mines and operate in compliance with imminent Mine Safety Health and Administration (MSHA) diesel particulate matter (DPM) regulatory limits of 160TC µg/m3, a new ventilation system was required. The new ventilation system was developed primarily based on the diesel equipment required to meet production. Particular emphasis was placed on the DPM, diesel equipment utilization, main fan sizing, and fan locations to enable the mines to meet MSHA?s ventilation requirements in a cost efficient manner.

This report documents the need for formal health and safety, and equipment operations training in the mine construction industry. The outlines, objectives, and training texts were developed based on the recommendation of needs of mine construction personnel, and those of Dames and Moore (Safety Analysis of Shaft Sinking operations, 1977) and Kinton, Inc. (A Training Program for Conventional and Raise Drill Construction Personnel; Phase I, 1979). The training material samples contained herein (and under separate cover in its entirety) are designed to improve the safety and production of those in mine construction. An instructor-directed presentation is recommended. The results of the study are presented in the Findings and Recommendations section of this report.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrometallurgical procedure to recover gold, silver, and byproduct lead from a complex lead-zinc sulfide ore. A ferric chloride (FeCI3) preleach, at 40° C in 6 h, extracted about 50 pct of the zinc and formed insoluble silver and lead chlorides. Subsequent acid thiourea leaching, for 1 to 3 h at 40° C, extracted about 85 pct of the gold and silver. Lead chloride was solubilized from the remaining residue with NaCI brine solution at 55° C in 1 h. Lead metal was recovered from the brine solution in an electrolytic cell with an anion perms elective membrane at a current efficiency of 95 pct and current density of 100 A/m2. Spent FeCl3 leach solution was reoxidized in the anode compartment at a current efficiency between 75 and 95 pct.
