The German Ruhrgebiet is slowly transitioning into a post-mining state. It has been subjected to industrial-grade hard coal mining operations for more than 150 years. Due to a political decision, German hard coal mining will come to an end in 2018. By then the surface will have subsided up to 20 meters. After all mining activities in the area have ended, there will be no need to maintain the current mine water level. Accordingly, the company operating the last remaining coal mines has decided to let the water level rise to an as yet undetermined level. Alongside other issues that may be caused by rising groundwater levels, the protection of the area?s drinking water supply is of utmost importance. This notion is also represented by European and German law. The primary intent of the applicable laws is to protect the health of the citizenship. This means protecting ground water that may be used by humans from being contaminated by the mine water. This paper outlines the consequences of European and German legislature on mining aftercare using the example of one of Europe?s largest agglomerations.

Kidd Mine in Northern Ontario is now producing from Stage 1 of the Mine D expansion project ? mining between 2100 m and 2700 m below surface. Planning for Stage 2 of the Mine D project is already well advanced and will see the mine extended potentially to 3100 m below the surface. To ensure adequate ventilation is maintained at such depths, two large axial fans have been installed on the 6000 Level (1800 m below surface) as exhaust booster fans to operate in series with the surface exhaust fans. The Kidd Mine 6000 Level Booster Fans are a unique installation with unique and often unexpected challenges. These challenges have been met and attacked through the combined efforts of mine and fan manufacturer personnel with a common focus.

"Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in flotation cell design, and one of the areas where attention is being focused is flotation in centrifugal fields which aims at increasing the flotation rates by forced bubble-particle contact.A new cycloflotation device was developed at Laurentian University and tested on the nickel ore of Falconbridge Limited in Sudbury. In comparison with conventional flotation, cycloflotation yielded at least seven times faster flotation rates in terms of the mass of solids floated per unit time per unit flotation volume, while producing concentrate grades similar to those of conventional flotation. These results, which were obtained with a bench-scale ""cyclofloat cell,"" suggest that cycloflotation has the potential of setting a new direction in flotation technology.IntroductionFroth flotation is no doubt the dominant separation technique in the mineral processing industry. Since its inception early in this century, much research effort has been and is still being expended on this process. Until recent years, emphasis seems to have been placed on the chemical aspects of flotation, but there is now an increased awareness for the need to improve flotation machine performance and more and more attention is being directed towards this area. An understanding of the thermodynamics of smelting copper anode slimes is a prerequisite for improvements to the process. During slimes smelting, a silver-copper selenide matte is formed and subsequently oxidised to silver metal. As part of a series of investigations, molten silver selenide matte was oxidised at 1 100 degrees C with pure oxygen. The chemical potential diagram for the system was developed and used for qualitative prediction of the results of the experiments. A simple, computational thermodynamic model of converting is presented, the adjustable parameters of which were determined by matching the model with the experimental results. The practical usefulness of the model was demonstrated by predicting the effect on silver recovery of smelting temperature and of using either oxygen or air as the smelting gas

"The gravity circuit at Les Mines Camchib Inc. consists of two pinched sluices to bleed a feed to one of two 76 cm (30"") Knelson concentrator. The Knelson concentrate is upgraded to smeltable grade with a smaller Knelson (18/30 cm) and a riffleless table. Their tails are column cyanided and washed prior to recycle to the grinding circuit. This paper details size-by-size circuit performance. The Knelsons recover around 90% of free gold (as determined by Mozley Laboratory Separator), even below 37 µm. The sluices are ineffective, with upgrading ratios around 2, but approaching unity in the fine sizes. Much of the effectiveness of the circuit lies in the high gold circulating loads in the grinding circuit, which partly atone for the poor sluice performance, and the ability of the Knelsons to recover free gold. Secondary upgrading recovers slightly above 99% of the primary concentrate gold, 90% of it in a 65% Au concentrate and the balance in a heavily loaded (10 to 20 oz/st) pregnant solution. INTRODUCTIONBackgroundThe operating performance of the mill of Les Mines Camchib Inc. has been described earlier (Laplante et al., 1989). The presence of significant chalcopyrite (1 % and up) makes flotation necessary prior to cyanidation, to limit cyanide consumption and minimize environmental impact. In 1982, the presence of very high gold circulating loads in the grinding circuit lead to the commissioning of a gravity circuit, schematically shown in Figure 1. Gravity recovery of gold has been found beneficial because it increases metallurgical recovery by 1-3% (Laplante et al, 1987), as only part of the flotation tail is cyanided, and economic recovery, because of the lower net smelter return of gold in the flotation concentrate (as compared with the gravity concentrate). The latter increase is estimated, with a net smelter return of 95%, at 1.5% when gold recovery by gravity is equal to 30%. In early 1988, a sampling program was initiated to characterize the behaviour of gold in the grinding/gravity circuit. This paper reports on the results of this study."

"The design of the below grade structure of Brigham Building for the Future (BBF) included three different areas to provide power generation and medical facilities as well as a parking garage. The three areas are divided and bounded by 3 foot thick slurry walls. Because each area has different depths and functions, the excavation and construction of the below grade structure presented considerable design challenges. The intricate sequence of excavation and construction between the areas was numerically simulated using a finite element analysis to assess the behavior of the slurry wall and the retained soil. The slurry wall and the related bracing system were modeled as a linear elastic beam and truss element respectively while the soil behavior was simulated using a hardening soil model. The interaction between slurry wall and soil was facilitated by the implementation of an interface element in the numerical model. The design of bracing system to adequately support the slurry walls during the excavation was done based on the envelope of the numerical responses in stage analysis. Predicted lateral displacements of slurry walls were later compared with the field measuring data. The comparison indicated a close agreement.INTRODUCTIONBrigham Building for the Future (BBF) is located in the Brigham and Women’s Longwood medical campus of Boston. The building will serve, once completed, as a biomedical research center and clinical facility to carry out a commitment by Brigham and Women’s Hospital to be the most technologically advanced facility in the country.The 11 story building will also feature a roof garden. The below grade portion of the building has a footprint of 265 feet wide and 210 feet long and is divided into three areas, a 6 stories garage, a cogeneration plant, and an imaging center. BBF was designed and constructed to achieve LEED Gold certification and will have high efficiency and improved sustainability as a medical facility. Ground breaking was in May, 2013. Below grade construction was completed in April, 2014 and the entire building will be finished in late 2016.As shown in Figure 1, the garage area has the largest foot print, 265 feet wide and 125 feet long. The lowest floor of the garage is located about 70 feet below grade. The co-generation plant is about 190 feet wide and 85 long and 50 feet deep. The imagining center is the smallest among three areas. It is 75 feet wide and 85 feet long and 22 feet deep. The areas are separated and bounded by 3 feet thick slurry walls.The perimeter and inner slurry walls were designed to support column loads from the above grade structures, lateral soil pressures and earthquake loads as per the building’s permanent condition and requirement. However the contractor was required to design the temporary bracing and the reinforcement for the slurry walls to resist construction stage loadings."

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. J0100038, "Demonstration of Noise Control Techniques for the Crushing and Screening of Nonmetallic Minerals." The objectives of the program were to: a. Identify the prevalent sources of crushing and screening noise in portable and stationary plants b. Design retrofit noise control treatments for those sources c. Field test control treatments under actual operating conditions. A census of the nonmetallic industry was performed to determine the number and types of crushing and screening equipment. Based on the census, eight plants were selected and surveyed to assess the variety of noise sources, determine the worker noise exposure to those sources, and to identify possible constraints that had to be considered in designing and installing the retrofit controls. Three plants were selected from those surveyed and retrofit noise control treatments were designed, including: a. A primary crusher operator control booth b. Screen decks made of resilient cloth c. Screen feedbox impact pads d. Rubber feed plate for secondary crusher e. Rubber feed chute linings for secondary crusher f. Noise attenuating curtain for secondary crusher. A new primary crusher control booth was installed at one plant, and the operator noise levels were reduced from 97 dBA to 78 dBA. Screen noise at the two secondary crushing plants was reduced by 3 dBA to 7 dBA; crusher noise was reduced by 5 dBA at one of these two plants. Noise levels at normal outside operator and cleanup locations were reduced by 4 dBA to 7 dBA at one secondary plant, but operator/cleanup noise levels were not significantly reduced in the second plant due to rapid wear of installed materials. At one of the two secondary plants the retrofit noise control materials displayed excellent wear characteristics. The rapid wear of retrofit materials at the second plant was due to improper materials being supplied and changing circuit conditions.

Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of ladle slag composition on the decreasing behaviour of aluminum content in steel, i.e., reoxidation of molten steel in contact with slag, using a vertical tube furnace. The steel composition and the slag system chosen were for ultra low carbon and CaO-Al2O3-FeO-MnO-MgO based to simulate ULC steel grades. It has been observed that the reoxidation rate shows a good relationship with (T. Fe) content in slag. In case of (T. Fe) content higher than 1.5 weight per cent, the reoxidation rate increases linearly with increasing (T. Fe) content. For a given (T. Fe) content, it decreases with the increasing (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. However, in the case of (T. Fe) content lower than 1.5 weight percent, no particular relationships are observed between the reoxidation rate and (T. Fe) content or the (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. These results were used to propose for an aim a slag composition for the ULC steel grades in a steelmaking plant. The value of protective clothing in the prevention of injuries has long been recognized in many of the leading industries , but the adoption of the idea into mine safety programs is comparatively new . Once started , however , the idea has grown rapidly and the results already obtained by mining companies have shown that it is fundamentally sound . Both coal and metal mining companies are rapidly adopting these protective measures , and since 1924 many mines have become well equipped with eye , head , and foot protection . At the present time approximately 70 percent of the employees in the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania are provided with safety hats . At many metal mines all employees are provided with safety hats, shoes , and goggles . The Pennsylvania mining law provides that all shaft · workers in anthracite mines shall wear protective hats . In According to a study³ made of the nature of 3,485 temporary injuries and of the parts of the body of underground coal mine employees most exposed to occupational hazards , the head and face were injured 665 times , the hands 856 times , and the feet 565 times . Of 2,555 temporary injuries in metal mines , the head and face received 484 , the hands 788 , and the feet 357 . a similar study4 made by a coal -mining company for the year 1928 , of 556 injuries the scalp received 9 , the skull. 4 , the eyes 47 , the hands 62 , the thumbs 21 , the fingers 141 , the ankle , the feet 51 , and the toes 35 . Probably most of these injuries could have been prevented by suitable protective clothing and equipment . This study also revealed that at least one injury occurred

"Physical and numerical modelling methods were followed to identify mechanism(s) for tundish slag entrainment in a bare tundish and one with a flow control device (FCD).The physical and numerical models made use of water and paraffin to model steel and slag respectively. Observations from the physical model showed that the steel-slag interface remains immobile in both cases. Entrained paraffin formed droplets approximately 1 mm in diameter. Results from both models (numerical and physical) showed that in both cases (bare and FCD case), areas of high entrained slag concentration exist near the inlet region. The entrained slag concentration decreases towards the tundish endwalls.Flow patterns and velocities tangential to the steel-slag interface from the numerical model showed that slag entrainment in both the bare tundish and tundish with a FCD possibly takes place via two mechanisms. First, the slag moves across the steel-slag interface via mass transfer; secondly small velocities tangential to the interface at depths greater than 10 mm below the interface carry the already ‘entrained’ slag into the bulk steel phase. These tangential flow patterns are dominant in the inlet region, hence the high concentration of entrained slag in this region. IntroductionThe tundish serves as the last metallurgical vessel through which steel passes before solidifying in the moulds. It is in the tundish that the last traces of non-metallic inclusions should be removed, otherwise the inclusions carry over to the moulds and cause defects in the steel product. In the tundish, the slag is less dense than the melt and thus resides on the top of the melt. The slag provides a sink into which the non-metallic inclusions float to and dissolve. The slag also protects the melt from air and heat loss. However, when slag is entrained in the melt as a result of increased turbulence or shearing at the steel-slag interface, slag can become a source of nonmetallic inclusions.Numerous studies on flow patterns in the tundish have been carried out since the introduction of the tundish. The flash induced combustion of Sewell and Pittsburgh coals was studied in air and in oxygen. The primary decomposition and combustion processes occur within the first 300 ~sec in oxygen and slightly later in air. Strong absorption spectra of CN and OH are indicative of the decomposition and combustion processes, respectively. Kinetic spectroscopy and combustion product analyses indicate that only about 35% of the coal dust is consumed in the explosive combustion which takes place in several (1-5) distinct but similar steps. The combustion-modifying effects of (NH4)2HP04, NH4H2P04, KHC03 and Rock Dust were studied in the 1-20 wt % range in coal dust flash com-busted in air and oxygen. The study reported herein shows Rock Dust to be the most efficient coal combustion inhibitor. KHC03 is the least effective agent, with the phosphate salts showing marginal effectiveness.

Because several new and unusual synthetic minerals were found in the system MgO-MgF₂ - SiO2 with Li * , or Nat a similar system with Geo₂ replacing Sio , plus Lit was investigated . In addition to the expected compounds of germanium , Ge - fluor - hectorite and a Ge - fluor- chrysotile were synthesized . Protoamphibole was not observed . Data are given for 69 compositions prepared in the system MgO- MgF₂ - Ge02 at 6.94 percent LiF .

"A numerical procedure based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is developed for rock blasting phenomena involving multiple intersecting joints. In this procedure, an elasto-plastic damage constitutive model has been applied in the framework of SPH to simulate yielding response of the surrounding rock medium. In this paper, a square shape rock medium with centrally located emulsion explosive in a borehole is numerically blasted with and without the presence of two diagonal rock joints. The model is simulated by assuming all four sides of the rock medium as free surfaces. The paper elaborates the propagation of stress wave, expansion dynamics of gaseous products, and development of fracture, fragmentation of the medium and dissipation of energy due to damage.INTRODUCTIONDamage prediction of rock mass and its mean fragmentation size are of important to design blast parameters for a given explosive. Current blasting practice solely depends on empirical relationships between fragmentation sizes to those blast design parameters while mathematical descriptions of the physical laws governing the process of rock blasting are limited. A constitutive relationship based on properties of explosives and rock mass is of special interest because of its capabilities in describing the key features of rock fracture and fragmentation, resulting in understanding of the physical process involved in rock blasting. It is well known that blast-induced damage and fragmentation of rock mass occur due to detonation induced stress wave and product gas driven fracture propagation. Nevertheless, the fundamental mechanism of the failure process and the behavior of rock characteristics under these two different loading are not well understood in many cases, which are closely related to growth of fractures and interaction of cracks under different loading conditions.Continuum damage mechanics is considered to be appropriate to describe the failure process under such high-amplitude stress wave. Based on this approach, several theoretical models have been developed to analyze the dynamic damage of brittle material such as rock and concrete with microstructure (Chen, 1999; Taylor et al., 1986; Wu et al., 2004; Yazdchi et al., 1996). These models are mostly based on the theory of damage mechanics or fracture mechanics with some statistical treatment to incorporate random distribution of microcracks. In the application of fracture mechanics theory, sometimes it is difficult to estimate the micromechanical parameters such as crack density and fracture toughness in different modes. In this study, damage in rock material is evaluated according to the earlier model developed by Grady and Kipp (1980), which is a fracture model coupled with a material description for stress wave propagation to predict quantitatively fracture and fragmentation under explosive loading conditions."

"During the early summer of 1989, Ontario Hydro removed a concrete portion of the North Channel Dam at Crystal Falls Generating Station by blasting and excavating in marine conditions. Because of the severity of underwater blasting and because the site was in close proximity to the replacement dam, there was concern that hydraulic shock waves generated by the detonation could damage either the new dam or its control structures. This paper examines the data associated with the hydraulic shock waves generated by underwater blasting, and studies the effectiveness of an air curtain in reducing the peak pressures. In previous trials using the air curtain technique, a rule-of-thumb factor was used to estimate that only 10% of the original pressure pulse would propagate across the air curtain. However, this value had little basis in theory. A theoretical formulation of the problem by Karney in 1989 indicated a provisional value of 0.18 for this factor, but was heavily dependent on confirmation from in-field testing. Data provided by Ontario Hydro from an actual blasting procedure indicate that a more conservative value of 0.32 may be more appropriate. Thus.although the air curtain did provide considerable reduction of peak pressures, the data at Crystal Falls indicates its performance was below the anticipated level. However, due to problems with the instrumentation and some inconsistencies in the resulting data. it is recommended that this value be further refined as additional data become available."

The use of analytical modeling of continuous chip formation in conjunction with orthogonal cutting experiments was presented in the open literature to identify the coefficients of material constitutive equation within the practical range of stress, strain, strain rate, and temperature encountered in metal cutting. Identification of reliable constitutive data was hampered by a lack of a reliable model for the prediction of the primary shear zone thickness that affects directly the effective strain rate field. An original analytical model to determine the primary shear zone thickness is proposed in this paper. It is based on the mechanics governing the material flow in the primary shear zone. Based on the distribution of the hydrostatic pressure and the forces measured from orthogonal cutting tests, the model that describes the thickness of the primary shear zone is derived. To validate the model, FE simulations of chip formation using DEFORM3D were carried out for different materials and cutting conditions. The results of the analytical model are in reasonable agreement with FEM results.

These inspection standard have been prepared for use in the Federal inspection of strip mines producing, bituminous coal, anthracite, and lignite. This circular is a revision of the Safety Code for Strip Mining, which was prepared by the Bureau of Mines and employed as a guide for Federal inspectors. Numerous changes have been made in the original code to keep the in step with improvements in the industry. With continuing changes in mining methods and facilities some of these standards may become inapplicable and further revision may be advisable. Therefore, questions regarding these standards, and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines. Few States haves laws pertaining to strip mines, but where such laws do exist it is possible that some of the standards may conflict with them. In cases of conflict, the intent is not to advocate noncompliance with State laws, but to suggest reconsideration of such laws or safety orders.

"In May 2015 the New Monte Bianco aerial cableway, operating on the Italian side, have been completed. It connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.)) with the intermediate station at Pavillon de Mont Frety (2160 m a.s.l.) and with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3460 m a.s.l.). A new underground link between Helbronner Peak and New Torino Refuge has also been built. The link is divided into two different sections: the first one, a 70 meters deep vertical pit created using the “Raise Boring”, descends underground from Helbronner Peak station; the second section, a 160 meters long sub horizontal tunnel, emerges at Torino Refuge. After a first introduction focused on the general layout of the project, the paper will present the geomechanical survey aimed to evaluate the effect of permafrost on the stability of intensely fractured granitic mass. Finally, it will describe the relevant issues related to the highest construction yard in Europe (3400 m a.s.l.): difficult conditions such as extremely cold and windy weather and restricted spaces. INTRODUCTION The new cable way connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 m a.s.l.), close to Courmayeur, with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3462 m a.s.l.) and its territory, as well as links with France and, through the French territory, with the town of Chamonix (1000 m a.s.l.). The overall layout is divided into two sections (as shown in Figure 1): the first section, “Pontal d’Entreves – Mont Frety”, has a length of 1700m, elevation differential of 886m, a capacity of 800 persons/hour and cable cars for 80 passengers; the second one, “Mont Frety – Punta Helbronner”, has a length of 2630m, elevation differential of 1276m, a capacity of 600 persons/hour, and cable cars for 75 passengers. The new system is designed for fully rotating cable cars moving at a constant rate of 9.0 m/s. The track requires constructing special cables supports, three for the first section and two for the second one."
