The interface between the matrix and the reinforcing fiber plays an important role in the efficiency by which an applied load is transmitted through the composite structure. The shear stress at the fiber/matrix interface can be associated with this load transference and,consequently,affects the composite strength. In the present work, pullout tests were used to evaluate the interfacial shear stress of curaua fiber in epoxy matrix composites. A small critical length was found for the curaua fiber embedded in epoxy, which corresponds to a relatively weak fiber/matrix bond and lower interfacial strength.

The regulations for current coal mine refuge alternative (RAs) require that there be sufficient life support to sustain survival of the maximum number of RA occupants for a minimum of 96 hours. This minimum duration assumes that rescuers can access the RA through the mine within four (4) days of the onset of the mine emergency. But what if mine rescue teams cannot reach the miners within the RA before the RA air supply is severely limited or exhausted? What could be done to extend the duration of the RA life support capability into the 97th hour and beyond? In addition, what might be done to enable more rapid rescue of the miners if they could not be reached through the mine in a timely manner? This paper describes a systems approach to address the potential need to extend the duration of RA life support beyond current design limits. New capabilities that need to be developed in advance of such a dire need include more reliable emergency communications, highly mobile and efficient drilling rigs, enhanced directional drilling techniques, and a standardized RA external life support interface along with RA internal design modifications to accommodate use of an external supply. The following sections describe the need, intent, and technology gaps associated with each of these capabilities. Government agencies and the mining industry should consider initiation of a program to investigate, design, and develop effective means of extending the current 96-hour time restriction on coal mine refuge alternative life support. The development process should begin with a focused study to refine the overall operational concept, investigate the current state-of-the art of critical technologies, identify specific technology development priorities, and make recommendations for a development program to provide in an organized, efficient, and timely manner a solution for extended refuge alternative life support and occupant rescue.

The Department of Mineral Resources has a statutory responsibility for mine site environmental management and control in New South Wales. The Department is focusing on an environmental management systems (EMS) approach, as a management tool to achieve æbest practiceÆ outcomes both within our own organisation and on mine sites. One of the DepartmentÆs tools is environmental risk assessment and management which incorporates the Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Process (MREMP). The MREMP was introduced many years ago in order to integrate the activities of key stakeholders who may have a material interest in the mine. The MREMP provides an ideal mechanism by which ædue diligenceÆ requirements and environmental management programs can be integrated into mining operations and lead to a sustainable post-mining land use.

IN the earlier period of anthracite-ruining, much coal was wasted, both underground and in the culm-banks on the surface. Such waste is common in the development of new mining districts, in which, as a rule, only the richest material can be profitably treated. In the anthracite-region, special causes operated to increase this evil. The mines were generally operated under 20-year leases, and royalties were paid upon such coal only as was actually marketed. The lessees consequently cared for immediate profit only. They were- not bound to win all the coal they exposed, or to leave it in such condition that their successors could win it. Nor was it their interest or duty to educate consumers in the use of their product. The market called for coal of large sizes ; and such coal they furnished, throwing away the rest. Any pains taken by them to bring about a more rational use of coal by their consumers would have borne fruit, after their leases had expired, to the benefit of somebody else. A full statement of the situation wits given in 1893, in the report of the State Commission, appointed in 1889 to investigate the subject.` That body included the names of Heber S. Thompson, William Griffith and the late Eckley B. Coxe.2 Its report gives special attention to the utilization of the old culm-banks.

The Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) project will extend commuter and future statewide high-speed rail service into the Transbay Transit Center, which will be located in the business district in downtown San Francisco. The DTX project includes 1.5 miles of underground construction, comprising complex sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. As part of the DTX preliminary engineering process, development of appropriate contracting practices, including contract packaging, procurement methods and contract terms for the underground construction, has been initiated. This paper provides a summary of the evaluations undertaken, preliminary conclusions reached, and proposed next steps to promote industry interest and maximize bid competition.

An important operational and environ-mental concern associated with in situ leaching activity is the balance between solution injection and recovery. Solution balance is an important indicator of the capability of a particular in situ hydrologic design to efficiently and effectively control and distribute leach solution within the target ore zone. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the factors that affect solution balance in an unsaturated ore deposit, as part of ongoing in situ leaching hydrologic investigations at the Cyprus Casa Grande Mine. Flow conditions in 58 injection and recovery wells at the Casa Grande In Situ Leaching Test Facility were monitored daily over an 18 month period. Changes in the balance between injection and recovery occurring during this period were evaluated using analytical and statistical methods. The results permit estimation of solution distribution and the volume of solution stored in microfractures and interstitial pore spaces within the deposit following 18 months of leaching. Approximately half of the difference between well injection and well recovery can be accounted for by solution movement through macrofractures into nearby drifts. Estimates of solution storage within the ore deposit at the end of 18 months of leaching range from 3.5 to 6.9 pet. of injected solution. These results also suggest that 13 to 26 pet. of the fracture/interstitial pore space in the deposit was saturated with solution after 18 months of leaching.

Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. Control of the particle size distribution of a muckpile after blasting is always an important subject for mining industry. Blasting has a significant impact on downstream processes such as loading, crushing and grinding. Improvement of blasting results provides increase in loader and excavator productivity due to increased diggability capacity, and increased bucket and truck fill factors. Suitable and uniform particle size distribution results increase in crusher and mill throughput and decrease in energy consumption in size reduction process. Digital image analysis technique has been used for many years in mining industry in order to determine blast fragmentation. The images of muckpile surface can be used to determine the mean fragment size (x50). The source of digital images can also be haul truck, leach pile, waste dump, stockpile, and conveyor belt. The screening that is conventional method to measure blast fragmentation is time consuming and expensive. Digital image analysis is a cost effective and faster method (1).

The, large volumes of low A. P. I. gravity oil that will remain in many shallow fields of California when such oils no longer can be recovered profitably by pumping are important potential sources of oil when ways and means are found to remove them from the reservoir sands. Estimated ultimate oil recoveries in many of the "low-gravity fields" of the San Joaquin Valley in California indicate that less than 25 percent (on the average) of the original oil will be recovered. These oils have viscosities of 1,000 or more centipoises at reservoir temperatures and, because of their high viscosity and low intensity of the reservoir pressure, the quantities that will be retained in the sands ultimately are so large and their recovery is such a challenge to petroleum engineers that the Bureau of Mines has made the study of their possible recovery one of its major projects. The fact that a slight increase of temperature materially reduces the viscosity of low A. P. I. gravity oils has 'prompted the use of various means for increasing the temperature of the oil in the reservoir sands and hence the rate of flow and Completeness of recovery of the oil. Hot oil, hot water, heated air, and natural gas, steam, super-heated steam, and the products of combustion have been circulated in wells to raise the temperature of the oil it the sands; electric heaters have been installed in wells, and butane and air have been intermittently exploded and the flames propagated through the tubing to the "pay" zones. None of the methods, however, have been entirely satisfactory for the recovery of large quantities of oil.

Discussed in the paper is the redesigned reserve/resource classification for solid minerals being put forth by the authors to replace the acting Russian classification of 19961. The new version is based on the traditional foundations of former Russian classifications and the principles of the ‘McKelvey box’, both categorizing mineral resources according to the degree of geological assurance and economic viability. Based on these approaches the classification deliberately deals with both reserve and resource categories very similar to those established by the Geneva Accords in terms of definitions implied. The authors proceed from the UN-ECE proposed concept of ‘reserves’ being a part of ‘total resources’ explored in great detail by geological and feasibility studies and economically mineable at the time of reporting. The draft classification distinguishes ‘proved’, ‘probable’ and ‘possible’ categories of reserves depending on the stage of feasibility assessment carried out, i.e. the degree of detail and accuracy with which modifying factors affecting mineability of an orebody are taken into account. The reserves are regarded as a product of feasibility assessment of ‘measured’, ‘indicated’ and ‘inferred’ resources. The portions of them not having been classified as ‘reserves’ are regarded as composed of two classes: ‘subeconomic’ and ‘potentially economic’ resources (or ‘resource base’). All the cells of the classification matrix are provided with traditional for Russia alphanumeric designations and appropriate UNFC codes. The classification scheme recommended is viewed as a step forward in improvement of the State inventory and reporting mineral resources in market conditions, conducive to cross-border professional collaboration in the field of providing reliable information on the mineral rawmaterials base of the world’s economy. Besides, it recommends an easy way to get rid of amethodological error in the UNFC classification scheme where consecutive stages of geologicalexploration are identified with a single inherent degree of geological assurance. Due to the planned deepening of the NY Harbor, NYCEDC/NYCDEP is planning to replace two existing water lines between Brooklyn and Staten Island with one deeper water pipe. The crossing, just north of the Verrazanno Bridge is 1.75 miles long. The new pipeline will be tunneled using gasketed concreted segmented liners. Apressurized face machine will be used through the soft ground. This will be the first subaqueous application using this technology in New York City. This paper discusses the planning, design and risk issues associated with the crossing and the challenging soil conditions that resulted in the decision to use a pressurized face machine.

When Oryx Mine down-scaled in 1994, focus was placed on development, with the primary aim being the exposure and proving of ore reserves. In order to achieve this aim, development ends had to be advanced to reef at the maximum possible rate. This in turn called for support methods which could keep up with the advancing faces, taking up minimum space and time for installation, while providing on the face a real coverage and effective long-term support. In the majority of the development ends which were located in fairly competent ground, the grouted rod development support proved to be adequate until such time as secondary support in the form of meshing and lacing could be installed. The ends developing towards the eastern boundary of the mine, especially in the ?C? block, encountered extremely adverse ground conditions due to the presence of smectite zones within the footwall quartzites. Smectites are a group of montmorillonite clay materials, mainly composed of hydrous aluminosilicates. They occur as minute platy crystals in the rock mass and are especially notable for their ability to absorb liquids. Generally, the zones are found in between the bedding planes of the host rock, and may vary considerably in thickness over short distances. Wherever the smectites were exposed by the development blasting, the rockwalls weathered as the smectites absorbed water and the condition of the tunnel rockwalls deteriorated rapidly. When the smectites were left exposed and allowed to weather, it became almost impossible to install secondary permanent support such as meshing and lacing at a later stage. To minimise the exposure time and subsequent deterioration of the smectite zones, it was recommended that all development ends encountering smectites be shotcreted as soon as possible after blasting. In developing a shotcreting support methodology, both a drycreting and wetcreting system were investigated. The situation at the time ruled out the use of a wetcreting system on the basis of the extensive and costly infrastructure required, as well as its limited manoeuverability. Instead, it was decided to opt for as maller scale but more manoeuverable drycreting system. The system utilized a number of portable drycrete machines with pre-bagged cement, which could support several development ends in close proximity. Initial trials using normal 30 MPa shotcrete on 19level proved successful and the system was implemented.

A sustainable coal industry needs to achieve a number objectives concerning mainly with superior utilisation of deposits and improved environmental performance. Modern quality control systems, which are greatly based on the on-line analysers, play an important role in achieving sustainability targets. This paper discusses the testing and application of on-line ash analysers installed in the Ptolemais and Megalopolis lignite mines in Greece and examines the possibility of using this type of analyser to control blending and homogenisation operations. The effect of the accuracy of on-line analyser to control process, when used for the characterization of low rank coals with complex and variable composition, such as greek lignites, is examined.

Given the diverse nature of field conditiorencountered, no reliable and proven method of evaluating fragmentation quantitatively, and the lack of adequate field controls found in many operations, it is unlikely that a universal plug-in model will be developed for all blasting in the imediate future. Environmental considerations are of increasing importance in determining the acceptability, schedule and cost of expansion ofCanada's uranium processing industry. Environmental considerations must be addressed in the early stages of facility planning. This results in a dilemma, as the process data needed to predict physical environmental impacts are not yet available from process design activities. Hence, a business risk is incurred if plant design is carried forward to meet these requirements prior to project (or site) approval. On the other hand, project scheduling normally mitigates against leaving process design engineering until such time as project approval is obtained. This paper examines the experience gained in Eldorado Nuclear's proposed expansion of refining capacity as viewed by an environmental engineering consultant. The history of the project and the relationship to process design functions in the two-year period prior to the Port Granby environmental hearings are reviewed. During the Port Granby public hearing, there was a consensus that normal operation of the proposed refinery could be successfully integrated with the site's natural environmental constraints. Moreover, the radiological impact from plant operations was demonstrated to be inconsequential. However, concerns were raised relating to plant upset and accident situations. These concerns are summarized. Process data requirements identified during the environmental hearings are discussed. Finally, the concerns for on-site burial of radioactive waste are reviewed. These concerns focussed on long-term stability of the waste in the presence ofgroundwater transport, erosion and glaciers. The AECB's position on waste management with regard to this project is reviewed in light ofthe implications for design.

This study investigates the transformation of pyrolytic spent tyre-derived char and crumb rubber into high-performance activated carbon chars for industrial wastewater remediation. Utilising an in-house macro-thermogravimetric analysis system under an argon atmosphere, spent tyre-derived activated carbon char were synthesised via physical temperature activation and aqua regia demineralisation. Comprehensive characterisation using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, revealed a predominantly amorphous structure with nanoscale crystallites (~1 nm) and active surface functional groups. Proximate analysis confirmed that both crumb rubber and leached tyre crumb rubber with aqua regia derivatives achieved favourable compositions (ash ≈ 9.6%; fixed carbon ≈ 84%), comparable to commercial activated carbon (AC). At an optimal activation temperature of 850°C, the char of tyre crumb leached with aqua regia variant exhibited a significant surface area of 300 m²/g. Crucially, the tyre crumb char produced at 850°C variant developed a pore volume of 0.8 cm³/g—effectively doubling that of commercial activated carbon (0.4 cm³/g)—facilitating the sequestration of large organic molecules. In application tests using high-strength starch wastewater, char of tyre crumb leached with aqua regia and tyre crumb char, both produced at 850°C, achieved total organic carbon removal efficiencies of 60% and 50%, respectively, bridging the performance gap between waste-derived and commercial adsorbents. These findings validate waste tyres as a viable, low-cost precursor for industrial-grade adsorbents, offering a sustainable circular economy route for tyre valorisation and reduced industrial disposal costs. Future research will focus on kinetic modelling and the recovery of zinc from spent tyre-derived activated carbon char residues.

Pipelines are used extensively in industry to convey various products. Internal corrosion of pipelines can lead to perforation and leakage of the product. A growing problem, not often accurately recognized, is internal corrosion of pipelines caused by bacteria. Microbiologically-induced corrosion (MIC) refers to corrosion caused by a variety of micro-organisms. This form of corrosion is not widely recognized in many industries, although it is widespread and causes many corrosion problems in pipelines, both internal and external. Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are responsible for the bulk of the corrosion problems caused by MIC. Corrosion caused by SRB is found extensively in water pipelines conveying raw, potable and waste water, as well as in pipelines conveying slurries. This problem also occurs in pipelines conveying crude oil. This paper describes internal corrosion problems of slurry pipelines caused by bacteria and outlines mitigation methods to improve slurry pipeline integrity, thereby extending the life of such pipeline
