"The Presidio Parkway Project will reconstruct approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of highway, including seven new bridges, three new cut-and-cover tunnels, and a new undercrossing connecting the Golden Gate Bridge to the City of San Francisco, California. The project site is approximately 5.6 miles (9 km) from the San Andreas Fault, capable of producing magnitude 8 earthquakes. Seismic hazards include strong ground shaking, soil liquefaction, ground settlement, and lateral spreading. The Main Post Tunnels (MPT) are two parallel cut-and-cover concrete tunnels approximately 1100 feet (335 m) long. The MPT site underlain by loose sandy soils susceptible to liquefaction and lateral spreading. Excessive racking and permanent displacement due to lateral spreading are identified as the main seismic vulnerabilities. Analyses showed that without ground improvement, tunnel racking of over 5 inches (13 cm) and permanent lateral tunnel displacement of up to 15 feet (4.6 m) could be anticipated. Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) is proposed to mitigate slope displacements and increase lateral stiffness of the foundation materials to reduce tunnel racking. A series of 2-D fully dynamic time domain analyses were performed to evaluate the performance of CDSM, confirm that performance criteria are met, and optimize the CDSM geometry and replacement ratio. The use of CDSM reduced the permanent tunnel displacement from over 15 feet (4.6 m) to less than 1 inch (2.5 cm). Tunnel racking was also reduced significantly. The adopted analytical approach presented herein can be considered for future tunnel design projects in seismically active areas.Introduction The Main Post Tunnels (MPT) are an integral component of the Presidio Parkway project which will replace the existing facility with a new multi-lane roadway between the Golden Gate Bridge and the City of San Francisco. The MPT are two parallel cut-and-cover concrete tunnels approximately 1100 feet (335 m) in length. As shown on Figure 1, the project site is located in a seismically active area, about 5.6 miles (9 km) east of the San Andreas Fault and 12.5 miles (20 km) west of the Hayward Fault. The San Andreas Fault can generate magnitude 8 earthquakes while the Hayward Fault is capable of producing magnitude 7.3 earthquakes. The design Peak Bedrock Acceleration (PBA) is 0.46g for the upper level design earthquake. The project alignment is shown on Figure 2."

Since 1988, there have been thirteen documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through near surface strata into structures or other enclosed spaces as a result of nearby trench blasting or surface mine blasting. From these incidents, there are thirty suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and one fatality associated with these incidents. To better understand the variables contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out a small- scale field study to identify key factors that may contribute to the migration of CO through the ground. NIOSH conducted single- hole heavily confined experimental test shots to measure the radial pressure pulse as it propagated through surrounding monitoring holes to determine if a relationship existed between the pressure pulse and resulting CO measurements afterwards. NIOSH also monitored blasts at an airport construction site. Following the detonations, the concentrations of CO, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were monitored for several days in the surrounding satellite holes. The peak CO measurements relative to distances from the shots were compared. Pressure histories and peak particle velocities (PPV) were measured at monitoring boreholes. It was found that the differential pressures recorded within the boreholes give some indication as to the likelihood of CO appearing, whereas the PPV measurements do not seem to be as good an indicator for potential CO migration. In this limited study, changes in barometric pressure had very little influence on removing the trapped detonation products, whereas applying a vacuum to the monitoring holes was effective in reducing the entrapped CO concentration.

"Given the results of triaixial tests, regressions are commonly used to evaluate the parameters of failure criteria that model intact rock strength and to perform statistical inferences used to evaluate characteristic values defined in EC7. Statistical robustness of these inferences is affected if the basic hypothesis underlying regression are not met, namely homoscedasticity (constant variance of the errors). This paper presents analyses of 23 sets of triaxial tests, starting by the evaluation of the regression parameters of the Mohr-Coulomb linear criterion and of the Hoek-Brown non-linear criterion, followed by carrying several statistical tests to check the homoscedasticity null hypothesis of independence between the variance of intact rock strength and the confining stress.INTRODUCTIONThough rock engineering design is clearly included in the scope of Eurocode 7(EN1997-1), its implementation raised a wide discussion regarding the applicability of structural safety concepts to geotechnical design of construction works in or on rock masses. The basis of the limit state design philosophy adopted in EC7 is that, for each particular design situation, all the possible limit states for a structure, or part of it, shall be considered and that it shall be demonstrated that the likelihood of any limit state being exceeded is sufficiently small. Though EC7 allows the limit states to be verified by one or a combination of methods, use of calculations is by far the most used, and it is often confused with the EC7 itself. It involves using characteristic values of actions, ground properties and geometrical data, as well as obtaining their design values by the partial factor method.Characteristic value of a given material property is defined in Eurocode (EN 1990) as: “value of a material or product property having a prescribed probability of not being attained in a hypothetical unlimited test series. This value generally corresponds to a specified fractile of the assumed statistical distribution of the particular property of the material or product”. As regards the design value of a material or product property, according to the Eurocode it is a “value obtained by dividing the characteristic value by a partial factor”."

The Republic of Singapore’s Public Utilities Board is implementing the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Project. The project’s deep tunnel component, 48 km of deep, large diameter sewer tunnels has been successfully completed (the works are in the defects liability period). Six International Design/Build tunnel contracts utilized eight Earth Pressure Balance TBMs ranging up to 7.23 m in diameter to deal with varied ground types ranging from deep soft clays to fresh granite. Numerous access/workshafts were constructed and using various support systems. This paper provides an assessment/overview of the tunnel contracts, tunnel excavation methods and equipment, and the shaft systems. Suggested enhancements to similar future projects are provided.

This paper presents an overview of ArcelorMittal iron ore mines including iron ore typologies and the annual production of each unit. The dream of constructing the new Second Avenue Subway in New York has finally become reality as the first construction contract package is currently underway. This first contract requires the construction a TBM Launch Box in the middle of Second Avenue from which a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will bore two tunnels south to 63rd Street. This paper will discuss the design of this contract and how construction has progressed including preparation, site constraints, utility construction and com-munity impacts while highlighting the challenges of working in an urban environment. It will also discuss moving forward on this major project outlining the remaining contract packages including their scope and status.

Recently the operating philosophy at concentrators processing platinum bearing ores has started to move from a recovery dominated system to one in which the production of high grade concentrates at the expense of some recovery would provide greater benefits in the further upgrading of the platinum group minerals (PGM). The low grades usually obtained are associated with the presence of naturally floatable talcaceous gangue minerals in all PGM ores. Polysaccharide depressants such as guar gum and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are used to improve the grades of the concentrates. Recent testwork has shown that the use of high depressant concentrations can prevent any naturally floatable gangue from reporting to the concentrate. The only gangue present in the concentrates would be due to its entrainment in the froth. Under these conditions much higher grades can be achieved. The sulphide minerals themselves, however, become susceptible to depression at high depressant concentrations. This work examines how the recovery of sulphide minerals in two Merensky ores was affected by the type and concentration of the collector in the presence of high depressant concentration (500 g/t) and that the response of the sulphide minerals was also dependent on the type of depressant used (guar or CMC).

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to devise a procedure for extracting copper from low-grade discarded mill tailings. A solid extractant consisting of an organic solvent extraction reagent adsorbed on granular activated carbon was investigated and proved to be satisfactory for extracting copper directly from leach pulps. When this material was used in a cyclic leaching, stripping, and electrowinning pro-cess, 95 pct of the acid-soluble copper was recovered from oxidized mill tailings. The weathered tailings contained 0.24 pct Cu (total) and 0.20 pct acid-soluble Cu. The copper was recovered as cathodes containing, in parts per million, 1.6 Pb, 3.6 Fe, 0.5 Sb, 1.5 AI, 1.9 Mn, and <1 Mg.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to assess the performance of various chain pillar configurations in terms of gate road entry sta-bility. Vibrating wire stressmeters (VWS&apos;s) were installed in four consecutive gate road chain pillars. Field data collected during panel retreat were analyzed to gain a better understanding of the mechanics of vertical load redistribution in gate road chain pillars as it relates to ground control problems. Several different pillar configurations were investigated including abutment-yield and yield-abutment-yield designs. "A recent paper prepared by the writer summarized the results of an analysis of the accident records of 34 metal mines for the calendar year 1925. The present paper summarizes the results of a similar analysis of the accident records of 59 coal mines for the same year. This summary is based upon reports furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by operating companies that par¬ticipated in the National Safety Competition of 1925.The purpose of the Competition was to establish the lowest accident-severity rate, thus showing the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to total number of man-hours worked. The reports covered all lost-time accidents that occurred during the year, that is, all accidents that disabled an employee beyond the day or shift on which the accident occurred. Detailed information for each of the 59 coal mines is given in the appended table. Each mine employed at least fifty men underground; over half of than employed more than 200 men underground. Hence the accident records should be typical of those of large-scale mining operations in general where the company is devoting special attention to accident-prevention work. The mines covered by the reports are situated in eleven States: Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia.A tabulation of the reports covering the 59 mines showed an accident-frequency rate of 123 per million hours of ""exposure* and an accident-severity rate of 10.214 per thousand hours of exposure3. The total volume of exposure or employment was 29,117,561 hours, representing the equivalent of work of 12,000 men for three hundred 8-hour shifts. The records covered employment and accident above ground as well as underground, although they did not include stripping or open-pit mining. Accidents during the year resulted in 33 deaths, 1 permanent total disability, 28 permanent partial disabilities, and 3,510 temporary injuries. These accidents represented a loss of tine equal to 297,417 man days. In arriving at this lost-time equivalent, each fatality and permanent total disability was weighted at 6,000 lost days (see footnote 3), as specified in the scale adopted by the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions; permanent partial disabilities were weighted according to nature of injury, in accordance with the scale adopted by the :Board; temporary injuries were weighted according to the actual number of calendar days during which the employee was incapacitated as a result of the injury."

DURING the past 25 years, mining engineers have seen the development of a multitude of specialized engineering curricula in the mineral industry field. Bachelor degrees are now !ranted in the fields of mineral dressing petroleum engineering, geological engineering, fuel technology, and many others. These fields were all, previously considered to be part of a mining enginieer&apos;s work and elementary phases of them were included in mining engineering curricula. Their emergence has left some mining engineers with the fear that nothing will he left for a purely mining engineer to teach, or that mining engineering graduates will be unable to complete in any of these fields with the more specialized students and thus will have neatly restricted employment opportunies. A secondary reaction has been that if students who began to say that the pining engineering curriculum taught everything but mining, since so many of :he subjects that had always been udedAuded in the mining engineering curriculum now were fields in their own right.

TSL Concepts and Practical Examples of the Non-Reactive System - Meyco TSL 865 Thin Spray-on Liners (TSLs) have been intensively investigated by mining and chemical industries within the last decade. Apart from the basic concept of spraying thin liners, expectations of the product&apos;s performance vary, eg immediate active strata support is seen as a key to control the ground permanently. For many coal mines this is an important factor to reduce maintenance in their roadways and enable permanent production from the long wall. In opposition to a passive mesh system this technology offers immediate active support to the strata. But not only coal mines are interested in TSL technology, there are potential applications in hard rock mines, during shaft sinking, pillar support and as an anti-weathering sealant. This paper will explain the advantages and disadvantages of TSL concepts; it will give examples of successfully applied TSLs with a main focus on the non-reactive and flexible system MEYCO TSL 865 by BASF. Furthermore, it will indicate the limitations and discuss briefly the bearing capacity and reasonable lab testing of such systems.

"The objective of this paper is to estimate the coal seam strength and the pillar safety factor for low coal seams using back analysis and rock mass characterization. The coal seam strength is very important to estimate both pillar capacity and mine section design. There are two approaches to estimating coal seam strength: (i) by geomechanics characterization of the boreholes cores; and (ii) by back analysis from pillars successes and failures, or some in-situ tests. For low coal seams (1.2 m, or 47 in.), the confinement of the center of the pillar is very important to defining global pillar strength because the low seam height increases the confinement of the pillar core, even in small pillars. We used in this case study one underground coal mine in the Parana State where the coal seam thickness is 0.8m the pillar height is 1.3m, the entry width is 5m and seam depth is 130m. A panel test was prepared to study the pillar behavior for use of the retreat mining method. The designed pillar size was 6x5m and 1.3m high with a predicted safety factor of 1.0 based on the Hoek and Brown failure criterion is 5.3 MPa. Once no pillar failure was observed, the pillar safety factor was assumed at 1.0 and the coal seam strength was backcalculated. The back analysis estimated the coal seam strength to be 6.2MPa. The confinement of the pillar center directly affects the coal pillar strength, and also the coal seam strength estimated by back calculation.IntroductionThe coal seam strength is very important to estimating pillar strength and mine section design. There are two approaches to estimating coal seam strength: (i) by geomechanics characterization of the coal seam using borehole cores; and (ii) by back analysis from pillar successes and failures, or some in-situ tests like panel test or ultimate pillar capacity (Salamon and Munro, 1967; Maleki, 1981; Peng and Dutta, 1992). For the first approach, lab tests (mainly triaxial tests) and borehole geomechanics descriptions (quality and quantity of the discontinuities) determine the coal seam strength by the Hoek and Brown failure criterion (Hoek and Brown, 1997). For the second approach, a panel test to study the pillar behavior can be built to define coal seam strength by back calculation. The safety factor for the pillars in the test is 1.0, based on the estimated coal strength from the geomechanics characterization. In this case, the probability of failure is 50%. If some pillar failure occurred, and the real pillar size was measured, the back analysis could be applied to define pillar strength and the coal seam strength."

Most of the piers and other pile-supported marine structures in the New York City Harbor area were constructed prior to the widespread use of currently available pile protective systems. As a result, the support piling of many existing marine structures have experienced deterioration to an extent that their structural sufficiency is impaired long before the useful life of the structures they support is over. This situation presents special and unique problems of how to restore the structural integrity of these piles while at the same time allowing full use of the structures they support. Spearin, Preston & Burrows is a 100 year old New York City-based marine construction firm specializing in waterfront and foundation construction. In recent years it has undertaken and successfully completed several unusual projects in the New York City Harbor area involving the rehabilitation of existing, deteriorated piling underneath major, economically important marine structures. This work was accomplished using techniques that permitted full use of these structures. Several different pile rehabilitation systems were used, each having their own particular application to the deterioration problems of the piles supporting each structure.

Labour protection, that is prevention of occupational disease and reduction in the frequency of accident, has always been a matter of major concern of mining industry. Management and the government should promote and maintain high safety standards through some measures to reduce accident frequency and occupational disease. This can be achieved by using the science and technology for improving the working conditions, educating workers and managers about accidents and prevention techniques. The detailed analysis of an accident requires knowledge of many factors such as location, time, type, cost of accident, victim, nature of the injury, personal and environmental factors etc. that can be obtained from the standard coded accident report form. There is a need to prepare safety data in a common format to produce a common safety reporting system and ‘Occupational Health and Safety Management Tool’ is being designed to manage this by using database and Internet technology. Precautions should be taken according to results from database queries by providing comprehensive and accurate national data. To have an accident is unfortunate, however, to have an accident and learn nothing from it is unforgivable. Operations at the Sweet Home Mine transformed the mineral specimen industry, not only in the development of new innovative extraction techniques, but also in the fields of sample preparation and marketing. Principally as a result of the activities at the Sweet Home Mine, there is now a better appreciation of minerals and the market they encompass. Individual Sweet Home rhodochrosite specimens have been sold for more than $1 million, with many more in the five- and six-figure dollar range. This article is a review of the Sweet Home operation, with emphasis on its extraction techniques. District history The Sweet Home Mine is located within the Alma mining district in the Mosquito Range of central Colorado, approximately 6 km (3.7 mile) northwest of the town of Alma at the base of the Red Amphitheatre in Buckskin Gulch at an elevation of 3,440 m (11,286 ft). Other nearby mining districts include Climax, Leadville, Breckenridge and London. All are considered part of central portion of the Colorado Mineral Belt (Fig. 1).

"The Delnite mine is in the northwest part of Deloro township, Cochrane district. The property consists of 307 acres on the so-called 'South Break' in the Porcupine camp. The Company was formed in 1934 to take over the holdings of La Roche Mines, Limited. Gold has been produced continuously since June 1, 1937. The value of the gold recovered to date (December 31, 1946) has been $7,456,000, and the average grade of ore $6.81 a con.The ore at the Delnite occurs in relatively narrow, persistent, quartz-ankerite veins, which generally contain tourmaline and have a ladder-like structure. The gold occurs in the free state, and in association with pyrite and arsenopyrite, the two chief sulphides. The host rock is fine-grained, highly carbonatized andesite of Keewatin age."

This volume describes the use of the Penn State Mine Ventilation Simulator (PSU/MVS) to model existing mine ventilation systems and, in addition, to evaluate the effect of system modifications. Ventilation survey methods designed to insure computer input data of sufficient accuracy for simulation purposes are covered in comprehensive detail, including quantity and pressure measurement and fan performance testing. The development of input data from ventilation survey results is discussed and illustrated by the use of an actual field survey. Two programs, written in FORTRAN IV with WATFIV, are presented to calculate airway head losses from altimeter pressure measurements. An existing coal mine ventilation system is analyzed and modifications to the system are simulated and evaluated. In addition the application of the PSU/MVS to non-coal mines is briefly discussed. An extensive bibliography on ventilation surveying and simulation is included.

In this paper, the tribological and electrochemical corrosion properties of Al2O3/polymer nanocomposite coatings were studied using a micro-hardness test, a single-pass scratch test, an abrasive-wear test, and finally an electrochemical technique such as potentiodynamic polarization measurement, The coatings containing Al2O3 nanoparticles showed improvement in scratch and abrasive resistance compared with polymer coatings; this improvement is attributed to the dispersion hardening of Al2O3 nanoparticles in polymer coatings, Corrosion test results showed that the embedded Al2O3 nanoparticles in the polymer matrix do not sacrifice the corrosion resistance of the polymer itself.
