As part of an on-going effort to improve water quality and reduce discharge into Boston Harbor, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) East Boston Branch Sewer Relief Project was designed under a Federal mandate from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to upgrade the aging sewer system, increase system storage and greatly reduce the volume of combined sewer overflows into the Harbor. The project scope of work includes the installation of over 2 miles (11,800 linear feet) of 36-inch and 66-inch diameter sewer relief piping, twenty (20) temporary shafts and an approximate 100 foot open cut section, located within the densely populated neighborhood of East Boston, Massachusetts. This area is a former marshland backfilled in the early to mid 1800?s where busy commercial streets co-mingle with thickly settled residential houses. The subsurface conditions present within Boston?s complex geology include the presence of subsurface contamination as well as complex networks of underground utilities. Additional site limitations included low headroom, noise, and traffic restrictions. Together these limitations required the design of individual earth support systems, tailored for each shaft location. Moreover, challenging subsurface conditions identified during construction required design modifications to minimize cost and schedule impacts related to construction dewatering, treatment of contaminated groundwater, internal bracing, and utility relocations. This paper provides a case history of the Geo-structural design and performance of various earth support techniques utilized to construct jacking and receiving shafts designed to launch and receive two (2) micro-tunnel boring machines (MTBM) and to support the construction of new deep shaft structures in an urban coastal area.

The isothermal shrinkage rates of copper-powder compacts were determined in the temperature range from 760o to 1060oC. The rates for compacts fabricated from a pure spherical copper powder were compared, on the one hand, with those fabricated from a spherical powder containing a dispersion of aluminum oxide in the copper matrix and, on the other hand, with those fabricated from a pure copper powder having irregularly shaped particles. The irregular copper-powder compacts shrank much faster than the spherical copper-powder compacts and these, in turn, shrank faster than dispersion -strengthened copper -powder compacts. The experiments were run under a small external load. By varying this load, the stress dependence of the isothermal shrinkage rate could be measured for compacts from spherical-copper powders. This stress dependence was found to be approximately proportional to the 4th (dispersion-strengthened alloys) or 4.5th (pure metals) power of the stress. It is concluded that the material-trans port mechanism is due to dislocation climb rather than to Herring-Naharro creep. In this investigation the isothermal shrinkage rates of compacts made of copper powder with an average particle size of 70 g in the temperature range from 780o to 1060°C were studied. The aim of the investigation was to determine the mechanism of material transport responsible for the shrinkage of these compacts. Since the phenomenon observed in this investigation was shrinkage of compacts at high temperatures, it will be necessary to consider all the material-transport mechanisms possible in sintering. It is unlikely that evaporation and condensation, surface diffusion, or even volume diffusion of vacancies, in which surfaces of small radius of curvature are vacancy sources and those of larger radius of curvature vacancy sinks, will materially contribute to a sintering process involving shrinkage, i.e., one in which the centers of adjacent particles move towards each other. The two principal mechanisms which were considered were the so-called Nabarro-Herring mechanism and a plastic deformation mechanism by dislocation movement. Both of these mechanisms were originally conceived to explain creep, i.e., the plastic deformation of metals at elevated temperatures under a constant applied stress. The shrinking of metal-powder compacts which was studied in this investigation can be readily treated as a creep process. This means that the shrinkage rates observed are considered as creep rates under the influence of an applied stress. It is true that the stresses in sintering experiments are generally not constant but decrease continually with time, but, by considering creep rates or shrinkage rates over a relatively short time interval, the small changes in stress during this time interval can generally be neglected. Nabarro-Herring microcreep is a high-temperature deformation mechanism which is caused by a diffusional flow of vacancies from boundaries under a tensile stress towards those under a compres-sive stress. Herring1 has shown that in this type of microcreep the strain rate e is proportional to the applied stress and follows an equation of the form ma, aexp(-Q/RT) [l| where <j is applied stress, Q is the activation energy for self-diffusion, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature This type of creep can explain the shrinkage of a porous compact. The surface of the pores are subjected to the tensile stress of surface tension, while the grain boundaries are under a compressive stress also due to surface tension. Vacancies diffuse from the pore surface through the lattice to the grain boundaries, where they are eliminated. In order to maintain vacancy equilibrium at the pore surface the vacancies leaving the region of the pore surface are replenished from the volume of the pore, which means that the pores shrink.

At least three hydroelectric tunnels constructed during the last decade through the lower Himalayan region in India have met with serious problems of supporting in squeezing ground conditions. Steel ribs under went intolerable deformations requiring rectification to provide space for concrete lining which delayed the projects inordinately. In an attempt to choose a rational method of predicting rock load, the authors have compared rock loads estimated from various classification systems and elasto-plastic theory with observed values. The deficiencies of the classification systems have been highlighted to show that the combination of elastoplastic theory and tunnel instrumentation programme provides better guidelines for the design of tunnel supports in squeezing ground conditions.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode and across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because &quot;the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. This exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite is typified ??domestic?? due to its prevalence in regions with natural deposits of tremolite asbestos (or fibrous erionite) where the material from tremolite asbestos or fibrous erionite is used for domestic applications such as whitewashing. However, these exposures may be useful in examining the potential consequences of even small amounts of amphibole asbestos fibers in the ambient air. It can also elucidate the effects of fibers that behave like amphibole asbestos. Early in 1940 the development and sampling programmes in hand on the North and British Sections of North Broken Hill Limited were such as to necessitate the drilling of a large number of drill holes ranging up to about thirty feet in length. On the British Section, one purpose was to test the existence, width, and value of narrow lodes believed, for geological reasons, to occur in the walls of the existing workings. Another object was to definitely disprove the existence of payable shoots of ore in certain largerhodonite and quartz-garnet (&quot;garnet sandstone&quot;) pillars which had been formerly left as unpayable.On the North Section, the main purpose of the short holes was to delineate the ore-body boundaries by drilling laterally from drives in ore, and thus enable level layout to be planned in advance of sill stoping. It was also desired to test the walls of stopes in those portions of the mine where the economic limit of mining is not rendered obvious by a clear-cut wall, but should be determined by assay. In these latter cases it was hoped to eliminate &quot;prospecting by stoping,&quot; a procedure by which any doubts as to the existence of further good ore behind the low-grade walls were settled by continuing to stope laterally until all chance of such an occurrence was removed.LONG HOLE ROCK DRILLINGFollowing an investigation of recorded instances of similar practice elsewhere it was decided to use the rock drill for a series of trial sample holes. A 3-in. drifter was used. This was selected from those in use underground, and was given a special overhaul; had a new machine been purchased, a 4-in. type would probably have been obtained as being more suited to the work. The rods were H in. hollow round steel with a type &quot;1&quot; Jackrod thread. Couplings were of chrome steel, and were H in. in diameter, and 2 in. long. Jackbits (type &quot;1&quot; thread) in sizes from 2 in. to 4 in., with 1-in. gauge changes, gave a range of nine bit sizes. They were resharpened by hot milling, and were not milled to a definite gauge size.After sharpening, bits were sent underground without sorting into sizes, the drillers selecting the next bit with callipers. In view of the small scale of operations, it was not considered worth while to adopt special measures, such as the cold grinding of bits, which might have given a better product. Pipelines for transporting high concentration slurries are often designed using methods applicable to homogeneous non-Newtonian laminar flow. Many industrial slurries though comprise coarse particles in a non-Newtonian carrier fluid, and existing experimental evidence from tests with such slurries demonstrates that they are not homogeneous. Under laminar shear conditions the coarse particles settle, even in statically stable carrier fluids. To understand this better, the Institute of Materials Science and Technology (IMST) at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is conducting ongoing research into the flow of these high concentration non-Newtonian settling slurries. Since pressure gradient and flow rate measurements alone are insufficient to adequately model the flows, an electrical resistance tomography (ERT) instrument developed by the University of Cape Town (UCT)was incorporated into the pipe test loop to determine pipe cross-section concentration and velocity profiles. The software developed to do this is modular and allows different image reconstruction and cross-correlation algorithms to be implemented and tested without significantly changing the rest of the application. At a total frame capture rate of 566 frames/sec a 2.67 GHz Intel Celeron processor with 500 MB of RAM is fast enough to calculate and display velocity profiles in ?real-time? at an update rate of one profile every two seconds. Examples of experimental concentration and velocity profiles obtained using the system are shown and some proposed improvements/extensions to the system are listed.

Jointed rock mass is often encountered in rock engineering and its stability has always been a major concern in underground engineering. To analyze the stress characteristics and their variations in jointed rocks, in this study, a new concept of sub-instability stage before rock failure is defined, and a new experimental method is used to investigate interaction between defects and intact rock of the jointed rock mass during the subinstability stage., Firstly, external characteristics of stress and failure mode of the whole jointed rock are investigated systematically by conducting uniaxial compression tests on red sandstone samples with a set of preexisting open flaws of different sizes, and the interactive damage of intact parts and defects in the subinstability stage was further studied. Secondly, rock-like material samples made of bonded plaster blocks were tested and internal data from stress sensor between the strong and weak segments were collected. The transforming processes from independent activity of the individual segment to overall interactive movement of jointed rock before the unstable failure were analysed. The test results indicated that the subinstability stage marked the beginning of interactive failure between the intact rock and defects. In the early subinstability stage, the relatively intact parts bore most of the load in a jointed rock mass, and the defects were damaged firstly which caused high strain around it. The areas of high strain increase rapidly, extending and migrating, causing damage to the intact parts. In the later sub-instability stage, the interaction effect reached its maximum, and a large number of cracks appeared in the intact rock and they propagated and coalesced. Intact parts experienced rapid failure and then the jointed rock failed. The experimental method used in this paper to identify the sub-instability stage could be used to identify failure precursors of jointed rock masses and to develop technology for disaster prevention in rock engineering. Recent developments in hardware and software have made accurate measurement of Underground Face (Development) Drilling a reality. New and compact laser profiling equipment makes it possible to measure drilled material left on the face as well as the actual tracks of the holes drilled in the rounds. Utilization of these available technologies makes it possible to correctly define the drilling accuracy and the blasting pull. Through the use of actual face round measurements, I will show the level of definition and amount of information that can be collected.

Impregilo/SA Healy JV recently completed this Project using the first slurry shield TBM’s in the United States. The Project used two TBM’s to mine 18,000 feet in sands, gravels, and silty alluvial materials under the Willamette River and downtown Portland, Oregon. This paper discusses alignment and geological conditions, equipment selection and plant setup, and tunnel excavation means and methods, parameters, and results. Extensive hyperbaric operations were required and will also be discussed.

The growing popularity of perlite (sometimes spelled pearlite) as a raw material for thermal expansion into pumicelike products in the Western States has prompted a preliminary investigation of the properties of such material and the problems that want solution to put a perlite industry on a firm foundation. The Bureau of Mines is undertaking the gathering of data and the solution of these problems, and the following paper records some of the available information. and the promise of the material, with some comparisons of advantages of the various competing lightweight aggregates that can be made from siliceous volcanic glasses and rocks containing entrapped or dissolved water that causes their expansion on&apos; quick heating to their softening points. This new industrial rock has caught the fancy of the mineral industry in the western States because it has Fume advantages over natural pumice. Chemically, it is typified as rhyolitic in composition, and one may find obsidian, rhyolite, pumice, pumicite, and perlite from the same vant and contemporaneous in origin. The material need not be rhyolite but should be a siliceous or acid lava and contain 2 to 5 percent water still in "solution" in the rock. On quick heating to the softening temperature the material puffs, due to conversion of the contained eater into bubbles of steam. Slow heating causes gradual release of the imprisoned water by decrepitation and. cracking and-results in, very little puffing. Perlite is often in the form of ovoid volcanic bombs formed by explosive eruption of large masses of lava into the air, where they, quickly cool, with escape of little of the contained water, exceptt perhaps for a hollow interior. Since they cool in layers they have an onion-type structure and a pearly luster from interference of light between the. layers, which is&apos; the origin of the name "perlite." Perlite may occur in intruded flows that have been quickly cooled and partly expanded but retained most of their magmatic water content. Obsidian may be the same lava cooled quickly under conditions that prevented crystallization of feldspars and other minerals, leaving the volcanic glass that may or may not retain all of the original contained water.

The studies carried out by the Russian researchers and those carried out jointly within some contracts with scientific organizations and companies of other countries, show that the electric pulse disintegration of materials (ED), proposed and investigated in detail in Russia (Kalyatsky, et al, 1980; Usov et al, 1987; Semkin et al, 1995; Usov and Tsukerman, 2000; Kurets et al, 2002) has been widely recognized and developed abroad (Andres, 1995; Inoue et al, 2000; Biela et al, 2008). The Russian and international journals and the proceedings of the conferences dealing with the electric pulse disintegration pay great attention to the principal principals of selective disintegration of materials. There is no, however, any information concerning both the technical means developed to implement the technique and the assessment of their performance, which would be necessary in objective assessment of the industrial use of the technology. The results of long-term studies of the technique and technologies of electric pulse disaggregation by research institutes such as Research Institute of High Voltages (Tomsk), Kola Science Centre of RAS (Apatity), Institute "Mekhanobr"(S.Pertersburg) described. Exploratory stands and technological installations are developed to carry out pilot tests and operations under production conditions. Basic circuits and classification of technical means electric pulse disintegration of the materials are proposed, the analysis of transportation schemes and classification of the material in the disintegration apparatus are given, construction of chambers for continuous stadial disintegration of ores and materials are presented. The features and technological efficiency of electric pulse disintegration of various types of ores, and the spheres of effective use of the method have been determined.
