A testing program was conducted to design a cemented backfill fur hydraulic placement in underhand cut and fill mining of a steeply dipping coal seam. The testing evaluated the use of three different backfill aggregates, locally available at the coal mine, with Portland cement and five different pozzolans, including a Class F fly ash, a Class C fly ash, a cement kiln dust and ground smelter slag. Both viscosity and uniaxial compressive strength of backfill mixtures with different pozzolan and Portland cement contents were used to evaluate their suitability. Based upon the results of preliminary testing, an optimum mixture of alluvial sand with six percent Portland cement and ten percent Class F pozzolan was chosen for further compression testing.

Cold Detonation Physics (CDP) is a patented new field of explosives and the name for the explosive that is produced when non-toxic dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) is combined with powdered metals such as magnesium and aluminum, which are non-toxic and nitrogen-free. The explosive is detonator-sensitive and detonates according to the rapid reduction of carbon dioxide back to carbon, which produces solids comprised mainly of metal oxides and about 5% carbon. CDP was determined to produce a maximum of 300 liters of carbon dioxide per kilogram (4.81 ft3 /lb) and about 1.5 liters of carbon monoxide per kilogram (0.024 ft3 /lb). Both these figures shift according to metal content where higher metal produces less gases. According to theoretical modelling, the relationship between static pressure and metal content was determined to be an inverse parabolic curve with optimum pressure at 25% to 31% metal, depending on the type/s of metal/s used. Velocity of Detonation (VOD) was determined by measuring light at the wavefront with fiber-optic cable inserted into a series of holes drilled into the side of a 3-inch diameter (76 mm) schedule 40 steel pipe containing the mixture. The highest VOD was observed at 25% magnesium and measured between 2,500 to 4,500 m/s (8202 to 14,764 ft/s) when initiated by a 454-gram (1-pound) booster and an electric detonator. A 25% 50:50 alloy of magnesium and aluminum sample shot at a higher velocity than magnesium, according to how the alloy generated smaller pieces of shrapnel when compared with shrapnel from a magnesium test. CDP, using 25% alloy, was tested for blasting limestone by drilling 3.5-inch holes (89 mm) and inserting a 3-inch x 4-foot cardboard tube (76 mm x 1.22 m) with the mixture, packed to a density of 0.62 g/cm3 . The blast was initiated with an electric detonator, behaved like ANFO with more energy and fractured rock sufficiently across the entire length of the borehole. Seismic analysis determined that CDP produces lower ground vibrations than traditional explosives.

This paper describes the method of extracting sill pillars within the underground operation from under unconsolidated mullock fill at the Cracow Gold Mine. This pillar recovery method was initially successfully used to recover sill pillars at Crusader Mine, Western Australia in 2001. Globally significant resources have been sterilised due to the placement of loose rock fill above crown pillars and within adjacent stopes. The method described here offers significant opportunities to increase recovery of sill pillar recoveries.The royal orebody sill pillars at Cracow Gold Mine form a significant resource. Extraction of these pillars needed to be undertaken with minimal ore dilution and maximum ore recovery. The application that was selected to consolidate the loose mullock fill above each pillar used an injection grouting process (Minova FB200).Cracow Gold Mine mining method is bottom up bench mining. The pillars were left within the orebody to allow for stoping to commence whilst the decline was being developed. Due to the remainder of the orebody being extracted the only access to consolidate the backfill was from the sill pillar extraction level. Numerous problems were encountered and overcome from product selection and trial, system of injection to extraction.This pillar recovery process achieved a 95 per cent recovery of the sill pillar compared with an estimated 60 per cent typical for other mining options.CITATION:Potts, L, Mutton, V and Joyce, D, 2012. One of the most notable achievements of the iron and steel industry in the United States in this century has been the general increase in productivity of individual blast furnaces and the reduction in coke rate. Most of the improvement in furnace operations has occurred within the past decade. During this time the output of the average furnace increased about one-third, while fuel rates decreased from 15 to 20 percent. For example, in 1949, the iron and steel industry produced 811.2 short tons of pig iron per blast-furnace day with a coke rate of 1,870.4 pounds per ton of pig iron, By 1960, the average production of pig iron per blast-furnace day had risen to 1,182.4 tons, while the coke rate had decreased to 1,497 pounds per ton of pig iron. These figures are averages for the entire industry; many furnaces produced over 2,000 tons per day and one furnace, operating on pellets, reached 2,700 tons of pig iron per day, Coke rates of individual furnaces varied, but some furnaces operated on less than 1,200 pounds per ton of pig iron. The significance of this decrease in coke rate is shown clearly when data on pig-iron production and coke consumption in 1959 are compared with 1948. In 1948, 57.3 million short tons of coke was charged into blast furnaces to produce 60.1 million tons of pig iron; in 1959 only 47.6 million tons of coke was needed to produce 60.2 million tons of pig iron. Thus, in 1959, nearly 10 million tons less coke was required to produce about the same amount of pig iron as was produced in 1948.

The greenstone belt developed along the Sandawana line, an anastomosing, transcrustal shear zone. The lode gold is concentrated in veins and along brittle-ductile shear zones and other faults. Gold contents of 200 rock samples were found to be well below economically significant levels, excluding purely syngenetic deposit formation. Average gold content of unmineralised banded iron formation decreases from 7.3 ppb in the east (Manica) to 1.6 ppb in the west (Odzi), where depletion reflects hydrothermal leaching. The mineralising fluids may have been generated during deep crustal deformation, metamorphism and magmatism. Gold was hydrothermally deposited during carbonatisation and sericitisation of ultramafic and mafic rocks and during hydrothermal overprinting of banded iron formation and felsic rocks. It is present in native form and as microscopic to submicroscopic inclusions in pyrite, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite. Argentiferous galena and other sulphides are commonly observed. Rezende, which produced over 38 t Au, is hosted by a granodiorite stock. By-product gold was produced from Cu-Ni sulphides at Mundonguara. The deposits are related to the older, but not the younger, of the granitoids intruding the belt's supracrustal sequences; the estimated age of mineralisation is 2700-2600 Ma. Odzi district, with 61 mines, has produced only 3.5 t Au as its higher-level host rocks have apparently been eroded. Mutare (formerly Umtali) district, with 133 mines and 9 placers, has produced 68 t Au (65 t from Rezende and adjacent deposits), and Manica district, with 23 mines and 8 placers, 12 t Au. Estimated reserves for the Rezende area are 20 t Au and for Manica district 4 t lode Au and 19 t placer Au

Although the titaniferous iron occurrences at Iron Mountain have been known since 1850, exploitation of the deposits has been discouraged by the metallurgical difficulties encountered in treating the complex magnetite-ilmenite material. Because of the intimate association of magnetite and ilmenite, the material is not amenable to known ore-dressing practices. During World War II, industries started moving south and west from the industrial East; iron-ore reserves in the East were being depleted at a rapid rate; and titanium came into demand as a pigment. Imports of ilmenite from India, then the main source, were practically suspended because of lack of shipping space. These factors created interest in possible exploitation of the Iron Mountain deposits as a source of iron and titanium.

THE MAGNITUDE of the anthracite industry's drainage problem in the Lackawanna River drainage area is realized when it is known that in 1948 the 27 pumping plants in this region pumped over 48 billion gallons of water to the surface from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin of the Northern field. This is almost 92,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of over 300 feet for that year. By comparison, Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest artificial body of water lying wholly in Pennsylvania, contains 71 billion gallons of water in its 24-square-mile area: the volume of water pumped from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin during 1948 was approximately 68 percent of that impounded in Lake Wallenpaupack. The Lackawanna. River and its tributaries drain a troughlike area of 345 square miles. The synclinal axis of this trough lies within the coal measures. All surface drainage into the valley must traverse some part of the coal measures. On the basis of 45.03 inches of rainfall recorded by the Scranton station of the United States Weather Bureau for 1948, the runoff from the Lackawanna River drainage area during that period was 135 billion gallons, approximately three times the volume of water pumped by all mine pumping plants in the Lackawanna. There are about 400 multi-storey buildings founded on wooden piles in the city centre of Turku in Finland. Soil conditions are variable from hard rock to very soft clay. Due to the soil conditions and ground water lowering there are basically four different types of underpinning projects. Under dimensioned cohesion piles in a deep clay layer, decaying cohesion piles, a combination of these two reasons and decaying end bearing piles in a thin clay layer area. Although other energy commodities have developed successful futures contracts, long-term contracts still dominate the coal market. To establish whether coal markets will develop in the same way, coal price and volume data are tested against a set of criteria considered to represent some of the factors contributing to the development of a successful futures contract. Coal meets only some of the criteria: market players are subject to little risk in quite a stable market, have strong preferences for the specific nature of long-term contracts and profit from product uniqueness, each trade being individually negotiated. Potential structural changes in the western European market are not felt to be sufficient to create demand for a coal futures contract, but an empirical model has been developed that could form the basis of a further study to predict the potential for success

.1. The purification pilot plant and the equipment, solution, and gas cycle used for removing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide are described. 2. As sulfur recovery is necessary in any large Fischer-Tropsch plant, pilot-plant runs were made at 300 p.s.i.g. to study the efficiency of tri-ethanolamine solutions in removing selectively hydrogen sulfide from gases containing varying amounts of carbon dioxide. 3. Aqueous solutions of TEA of 20, 30; 35, and 50 percent were investi¬gated. Data indicate that 30 to 35 percent is the optimum concentration if both selectivity and economy are considered. Slightly better selectivity is obtained with the.20 percent solution, but steam consumption is greater owing to the higher solution rates. Results from our pilot plant runs indicate that a 50 percent solution not only produces an acid gas of lower hydrogen sulfide content but also requires high solution rates to effect hydrogen sulfide purification. 4. Data from 37 runs using TEA are presented in tabular form. In addition, the data are correlated and presented in three sets of curves. By using these curves, it is possible to calculate the compositions of the purified and acid gases for various raw gas mixtures. 5. In cooperation with the Southern Natural Gas Co., investigations were carried out at 300 p.s.i.g. on the simultaneous removal of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, from gases using various concentrations of diethanolamine. 6. Data from 17 runs employing 20, 30, and 40 percent DEA are reported in both tabular and graphic form. 7. A comparison of the data from one DEA run made at 200 p.s.i.g. with those from the runs operating at 30O p.s.i.g. shows float the absorption capacity of the solution, and, hence, the steam requirements per gallon are about the sage for both pressures. .The only real advantage of the higher pressure is the additional volume of gas that can be treated. 8. The quantity of steam needed to reactivate fouled TEA and DEA solutions increased as the reactivator pressure was increased about 1,0 to 1.1 pounds of steam was required for each gallon of circulating solution when the reactivator was operated at 5 p.s.i.g. 9. A curve is included that shows the effect of the hydrogen sulfide con-centration in a lean 35 percent TEA solution on the hydrogen sulfide content of the purified gas and on steam consumption for reactivation. 10. Both TEA and DEA reduced the organic sulfur content of the raw synthesis gas considerably. Analyses of the lean amine solutions showed a gradual build up of sulfur compounds, indicating that the compounds formed by the amines and organic sulfur do not break down under the ordinary operating conditions of the reactivator. 11. Considerable operating difficulty was encountered in the pilot plant owing to foaming of the amine solutions. Laboratory experiments in which the effectiveness of certain antifoam agents was studied showed Alkaterge C to be most promising for the particular conditions studied.

As part of the Federal Bureau of Mines project to develop new or improved materials for metallurgical furnace applications, the Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Research Center has conducted research to develop a reproducible laboratory test for evaluating the resistance of refractories to molten slags. Tests were conducted with a slag representative of slag used to produce mineral wool. A rotating cylindrical furnace was lined with the brick being tested, and it was operated at temperatures up to 1,660° C for periods ranging from 8 to 32 hours. The effects of such variables as slag temperature, rotational velocity, charge rate, and contact time on refractory erosion were determined. The research demonstrated the reproducibility of the test procedure developed.

The majority of fatalities that occur in road construction work zones in the United States involve a worker being struck by a piece of construction equipment or other vehicle. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Transportation, is evaluating methods to decrease these accidents. One such method uses devices that assist equipment operators in monitoring blind areas around the equipment to prevent collisions with workers on foot or other objects. Several cameras and sensor systems are available for this application, and a study was conducted to evaluate these systems on various trucks used in road construction and maintenance. Tests were conducted using sanding trucks during the winter months, which allowed researchers to investigate the effectiveness and limitations of various technologies under the most extreme conditions. Tests were also conducted using dump trucks during the warmer months to study the effectiveness of the systems in highway work zones. Results show that many difficulties arise when using camera and sensor systems in cold, snowy climates. And, while the operation of these systems is more reliable during the warmer months, challenges still exist in using them on equipment in crowded work areas.

The major industrial uses of char or semicoke produced by low-temperature carbonization of coal4/ are as fuel for generating electric power, for blending with metallurgical coking coal as a substitute for low-volatile coals, and for gasification to produce synthesis gas for chemical purposes. This paper discusses various methods for carbonizing coal, emphasizing processing of the noncoking coals to produce char for thermal power-plant fuel and for blending with metallurgical coking coals and tar for chemical use. Low-temperature carbonization is a relatively simple processing step involving heating coal to about 900° to 1,200° F. to decompose the coal into 4 main products: (1) Semicoke or char; (2) complex, partly oxygenated liquid hydrocarbons or tar; (3) fixed gases; and (4) water. If the coal is heated rapidly under conditions that prevent decomposition of the primary products, 68 to 87 percent of the net heat in the raw coal is left in the char and 10 to 23 percent of the potential heat appears in the primary tar. Fixed gases represent approximately 7 percent of the heat and approximately 2 percent is lost or dissipated in the reactions of decomposition. Considering the different ranks of coal in the United States, the yield of tar will vary from about 9 to 44 gallons per ton, therefore it is important that each coal be carefully considered if it is to be carbonized for industrial use.

It is the first worke in design of pile foundation to determine the carring capacity of single pile, and a static loading on site is considered to be the lost derect and reliable way. All values P and settlements S induced can be plotted as a broken-line. Since soil is a kind of elasto-plastic and cohesive material, the increasing of settlements is generally greater than that of loads. Different value Pu nay be given by different tester on his P-S diagram, because of erroys in the test and complicated, characteristics of soil. The analytical method of exponential equation shown in this paper derives a specified solution. After using an exponential curve to regress values of loads P and corresponding settlements S from on-site test, coeficients A and B of exponential equation can be obtained. With this curve an ultimate carrying capacity of single pile can be determined. The resistant forces of pile shaft and pile tip can also be defined by the tangent of the calculated knee point, as it is called (tangent method). At last, an example is given to show how the ultimate carrying capacity of f 500mm bored pile is obtained with this method for a project in Kunming.

"The challenges facing the mining industry include complex ores and declining grades, together with increasing capital costs and environmental regulations. In addition, future commodity price uncertainty makes investment decisions difficult. Shorter plant lifecycles mean that new projects need shorter payback and increased net present value. With regard to solvent extraction, the introduction of an innovative modular plant design will help to address these issues. The first such modular offering is Outotec’s VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant that uses prefabricated and transportable modules. Reuse and recyclability have underpinned the design concept. The greatest advantage of the VSF®X modular solvent-extraction plant is its relocation possibility. Additionally, it is suitable for various metals and plant capacity is adjustable through a scalable modular structure. After a dedicated plant lifecycle, the plant can be dismantled and relocated to a new site. This reuse ability offers major benefits for short-term plants, making them more feasible due to higher residual value. A net present value analysis is made for two examples, a conventional plant with no relocation possibility and a modular movable plant with extended plant life cycle, in order to evaluate the feasibility of modular plants. Results indicate that modular plant design could offer an economical solution with the additional advantage of improved overall sustainability through its life cycle. Since the discovery in 1935 by Adams and Holmes that certain synthetic resins exhibit ion-exchange properties, many applications of the ion-exchange process have been made. There are two general types of ion-exchange resins. Cation exchange resins adsorb cations from solution, and these in turn may be replaced by other cations adsorbed under certain conditions. 'Anion exchange resins adsorb acids from solution, and the anion of the acid may then be replaced by other anions. It is reported, however, that certain anion exchange resins have a low capacity for anions of weak acids without the necessity of acid adsorption either directly or as an intermediate step. The adsorbed ions may then be removed from the resins by elution with an appropriate solution, and the resin is prepared for the next adsorption cycle by regeneration with another solution. Sometimes one solution, is used to simultaneously perform the functions of elution and regeneration. The first and probably the largest application is in the field of water purification. Other applications have been made in the production of high-quality foods for human consumption, in the recovery of valuable substances from solutions, in the separation or fractionation of electrolytes, and in several other fields, each of which has its specific applications, variations, and possibilities. Ion exchange resins also have been highly useful in perfecting techniques of laboratory analysis and research.4/, 5/, 6/

The purpose of this paper is to therefore investigate the hydrogeological characteristics of tailings, coarse and mixed rejects from coal processing to enable better understanding of the potential for undrained behaviours in coal mine spoil piles. This is achieved by analysing the results from permeability and oedometer testing of tailings, coarse rejects and mixtures thereof. Focus is given to the effect that tailings content has on the behaviour of mixed rejects, the transition point between drained and undrained material behaviours, and the evolution of properties with increasing stress that would occur with increased depth of burial in a mine spoil pile. The implications of the findings are discussed with respect to spoil pile stability.

The Brown Derby pegmatites are in Gunnison County, Colo., about 18 miles east of Gunnison. Approximately 860 tons of lepidolite concentrates, with smaller amounts of microlite and beryl, was produced from 3 dikes of the Brown Derby group from 1943 through 1947. No mining was done from 1948 until December 1950, when production of lepidolite and beryl was resumed by the Poston Mining & Milling Co. Mining was intermittent during 1951 and 1952. The dikes were mapped and studied by the Federal Geological Survey during the field seasons of 1942 to 1944, and in May 1950 the Bureau of Mines initiated a diamond-drilling project to test the three dikes for lepidolite and beryl. After being recessed twice, the project was terminated indefinitely July 1951. Seven drill holes were completed for a total of 1,841.6 feet of drilling.

Construction of a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory(DUSEL) is proposed under the auspices of the US National Science Foundation(NSF). DUSEL will provide scientists and engineers with a research facility capable of supporting a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied research deep in the earth’s crust. Research partners are physicists, biologists and geoscientists. DUSEL research calls for the construction of a network of shafts, tunnels and caverns that will provide laboratory facilities at depths of up to approximately 2 kilometers. The Project is still in the planning stages but, the initial experimental program is taking shape and conceptual designs have already been developed at two hard rock mine sites. This paper discusses the overall program and key engineering tasks being developed to support the construction of deep, large-span caverns. These caverns will house a new generation of physics experiments. As currently scoped, the experiments call for the excavation of permanent caverns with spans of up to 60 meters, sited at depths in excess of a kilometer.

Debido a algunas restricciones en el diseño de planta, durante sus primeros dos años de operación, Las Bambas se vio en la necesidad de implementar un sistema de control y monitoreo para la operación de los hidrociclones del área de molienda secundaria. Al utilizar tecnología acústica y técnicas de análisis de data para evaluar el desempeño de los hidrociclones en tiempo real, dicho sistema brinda información oportuna a los operadores de planta, a fin de tomar acciones que no afecten el rendimiento de la etapa de flotación de cobre. Gracias a este sistema se pudo mantener un óptimo tamaño de partícula en la alimentación a la etapa de flotación y reducir los eventos de arenamientos en celdas de flotación a causa de cortocircuitos producidos en los hidrociclones, eventos que reducen significativamente la eficiencia de recuperación de cobre en la etapa de flotación y merman la capacidad de producción de planta.
