In 1994, Cyprus Twentymile Coal Company and Scandura formed a joint task force charged with the purpose of developing the highest rated fabric belt for underground longwall coal mining. This paper details the development efforts and concepts utilized by Cyprus and Scandura to meet the challenging demands of Twentymile Coal's East Mine District (EMD). The finished panel consisted of a 5,500 meter (18,000 feet) conveyor with 245 meter (800 feet) of drop over the first 3,660 meters (12,000 feet) and 245 meters (800 feet) of lift out-by over 1,830 meters (6,000 feet). The panel was designed with an operating capacity of 4,500 tph (5,000 stph) and 4.1 m/s (800 fpm) belt speed.

Humankind's interest in measurement of human physical strength probably dates to the first humans. At that time, life was truly a struggle in which the fittest survived. To a great extent, fittest meant strongest. Interestingly, current interest in human physical strength in the workplace stems from 1970-1980s vintage research demonstrating that persons with adequate physical strength are less likely to be injured on physically demanding jobs. Survival in many modem workplaces may still be a case of survival of the strongest. There is, however, a flip side to this issue - that persons with limited strength are more likely to be injured on "hard" jobs. To address this problem, we can apply what we know about physical strength to job design. "Hard" jobs can be redesigned to be within the physical strength capability of most people. Since physical strength is important to these jobs, we must find ways to quantify it through testing. This publication concerns human physical strength testing. Its purpose is not to recommend any particular type of testing, but rather to describe the types of testing available and their uses. It is up to each individual user of strength testing to decide which testing technique is most appropriate for his or her particular application. This booklet discusses four types of strength testing: isometric, isoinertial, psychophysical, and isokinetic.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique can be an attractive approach to evaluate the performance of face ventilation systems. To present the capability of the CFD for such a study and for design purposes, a series of simulations using CFD have been performed at the Department of Mining Engineering, University of Kentucky, for different face ventilation arrangements (e.g. different scrubber geometries, brattice (curtain) and continuous miners locations, airflow quantities, etc.). Results from these simulations are displayed as three dimensional graphs and discussed. Needs for the field validation of these results and refinements of design methodologies are also discussed.

"The Highland Uranium Project (HUP) is located approximately sixty miles northeast of Casper, Wyoming and is owned and operated by Power Resources, Inc. (PRI). With an annual production of680 tonnes (1.5 million lbs) U308, HUP is one of the largest uranium producers by in-situ leach (ISL) in the western world. Uranium is currently produced from four wellfields with a total flow rate of approximately 1,135 m3/hr (5,000 gpm). The carbonate leach solutions are processed by anion ion exchange at two satellite facilities located in close proximity to the wellfields. The loaded resin is transported by truck to a central processing facility for elution of the uranium. Uranium in the pregnant eluant is precipitated and washed prior to calcining.Wastewater from the satellite facilities is treated and used for irrigation at a Land Application Facility. The wastewater generated at the central processing facility is injected into a 2,750 m (9,000 ft) deep waste disposal well.When economical mining of the orebodies is complete, restoration of the groundwater is initiated. There are currently two wellfields at HUP undergoing ground water restoration. Phase I restoration consists of removal of the carbonate leach solution from the ore body. Phase II includes treating the withdrawn fluid with reverse osmosis and reinjection of the permeate into perimeter wells.Future plans include construction of additional satellite facilities at the Gas Hills Project and other economical deposits located within 240 km (150 mi) of HUP. The capacity of the central processing facility will be increased to 1,815 tonnes (4 million lbs) U308 per year by late 1999."

Ferrihydrite is often the initial precipitate resulting from the rapid neutralization of Fe(III) sulphate solutions, and it seems to be a major constituent of zinc plant neutral leach residues. The most important parameters affecting ferrihydrite precipitaton are temperature, solution pH and the neutralization rate. Low temperatures and rapid neutralization rates yield poorly filterable ferrihydrite, whereas higher temperatures and slower neutralization rates produce readily filterable precipitates; in all instances, however, the precipitates are two-line ferrihydrite. Significant amounts of Zn are incorporated in the ferrihydrite precipitates, and the Zn contents increase with increasing Zn concentration, pH or temperature. Generally, the sulphate contents of the precipitates decrease as the Zn contents increase, and this may indicate that the Zn is adsorbed on the ferrihydrite. Discrete Zn phases were not detected. Neither Cd nor Tl is precipitated with ferrihydrite, although thallium jarosite co-precipitates with ferrihydrite at high Tl concentrations and elevated temperatures. Virtually all of the Sn added to the solution precipitates with the ferrihydrite, but the tin is believed to be present as intimately admixed amorphous SnO2.nH2O. Although selenite extensively precipitates with the ferrihydrite, selenate remains mostly in solution, likely because of the close similarity of the SeO4 2- ion to the SO4 2- ion which is present in high concentrations and saturates the available sites for anion adsorption.

The behavior of impurity hydrogen that is contained in starting material or picked up during processing has been little investigated up to now. The hydrogen microprint technique is applied to determine the microscopic location of impurity hydrogen during deformation in aluminum without hydrogen charging. Three kinds of pure aluminum of 99.99% are prepared, in which hydrogen content is varied by changing the atmosphere when they are melted and heat-treated. After rolling, tensile specimens with a gage size of 4 x 4 rnm and 0.5 mm in thickness are stamped out from these three kinds of aluminum sheets. These specimens are covered with a liquid nuclear emulsion of silver bromide crystals, stretched by 5,10 and 15 percent plastic strain or fractured, developed and fixed. SEM micrographs reveal a number of silver particles on the slip lines and on the grain boundaries. Also shown is that the more hydrogen present in the specimen, the more silver grains appear on the slip limes and on the grain boundaries. Consequently, it is concluded that impurity hydrogen is transported to the surface with gliding dislocations during deformation.

This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calculations where the compliance limit of lbs SO2/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equations to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs SO2/million Btu, the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess% = 0.5 - 0.6*13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C[<] 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. In these equations: •W is the total weight; •A, B and C are the fractional proportions of each potential blend stocks; •Sa, Sb and Sc represent the percent sulfur content of the blend stocks; •Ha, Hb and Hc represent the calorific content of the blend stocks in Btu/lb; and •H and S represent calorific and sulfur contents of the composite blend. Cyanide leaching operations have taken a beating from the press and the public at large for its seemingly haphazard approach to control of cyanide solutions and containment of tailings. Major spills in Colorado, Guyana, Spain, and more recently, Romania, have highlighted what had already been perceived to be a bad scene. Citizen initiatives and legislative actions are increasing. Whether these indictments are justified or not will not be debated in this paper. What this paper presents is that the technology to avoid these disasters and future ones has been around for more than ten years but has been ignored by the industry, despite demonstrated&apos; cost effectiveness. It is time for miners to wakeup, and use emerging, instead of old, technologies.

Cyanides are present as a dilute constituent of streams from a variety of metallurgical and mineral-processing operations. In addition, a cyanide concentration in excess of approximately 100ppb is toxic to aquatic life, and consequently these operations require a waste-treatment process to reduce the already dilute cyanide species by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the waste streams may have flowrates in excess of a million gallons per day. The paper reports on research conducted with a laboratory?scale electrochemical porous (graphite felt) electrode (anode) flow-reactor, which was conducted in conjunction with a computer-aided simulation of a mathematical model describing the intrinsic rate-phenomena associate with the electrode processes. The laboratory-scale cell, of rectilinear geometry, was found to be capable of reducing a feed-stream anolyte (KCN-KOH and supporting electrolyte of a single salt ? K2SO4) with a cyanide concentration of 10ppm, to less than 100ppb, at current efficiencies in the neighborhood of 50%. The computer simulation of the cell performance based on the mathematical model (and constraints imposed for tractability) was found to provide only for qualitative agreement.

In 1994, ASARCO&apos;s Mission Complex Mine Planning Department designed a new stripping schedule to take advantage of reserve opportunities. Based upon the new stripping design, overburden removal exceeded available hauling capacity. This increased hauling capacity requirement required that ASARCO consider alternative technologies for material transport. In 1997, ASARCO Mission Complex completed the purchase and installation of a 3.5 km, 8,600-tph conveyor system to transport waste material. The conveyor system is composed of two apron feeder/sizer units manufactured by Mining Machine Development LTD. and a conveyor system manufactured by Krupp-Robbins. This paper will review the option of truck haulage versus conveyor transport for overburden removal by (1) describing engineering studies contributing to the solution, (2) researching proactive options to create alternative management decisions, and (3) revealing final results of the project.

Successful relationships between mining companies and local stakeholders are now an essential part of the social contract of “doing business” (Prescott, 1995). The methodology presented in this paper is designed to assist mining companies in understanding and building relationships with diverse stakeholder groups. The methodology starts by recognizing that mining projects have a natural life cycle which can be used to identify when new external affairs strategies are required. In designing an external affairs strategy, the first step is to set objectives that are compatible with the overall objectives of the mining project. The management team then identifies the main stakeholder groups and seeks to understand the priorities and inter-relationships of the individual stakeholders. The result of this stakeholder analysis is an understanding of the Degrees of Influence of each of the stakeholder groups along with a relationship map which illustrates the strong interactions between stakeholders. The company is then prepared to take a proactive approach to building relationships with the primary stakeholders. This methodology was developed by BHP to assist with the federal government environmental approval process for the development of Canada’s first diamond mine. BHP has successfully used the methodology in three different phases of the NWT Diamonds Project and is now applying the methodology to mining and development projects around the world.

Aquispirillum magnetotacticum (AM) is gram-negative hetrotrophic bacteria that belongs to a class ,of magnetotactic bacteria that have an ecological niche in marine marches and fresh water swamp sediments. Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans (TF) is a Gram-negative, acidophillic chemoliths that may have similar chemical conditions within the cytoplasmic membrane as Aquaspirillum M. to support growth of Magnetosomes. Magnetosomes are cellular bodies that accumulate under slightly aerobic conditions. Magnetotactic motion occurs in an external magnetic field and depends on the medium viscosity. The Atomic Force Microscope equipped with a magnetic tip shows the presence of Magnetosomes in these bacteria strains. The size, shape of magnetosomes in AM and TF strains are characterized.

Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person&apos;s body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm&apos;s center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. Polish copper concentrates are characterized by high levels of impurities, particularly Pb and As. Two technologies are being used for copper concentrate smelting at KGHM Polska Meidz S.A., namely the shaft furnace process (Legnica Copper Smelter, Glogów I Copper Smelter) and a single-stage process for direct to blister concentrate smelting in a flash furnace (Glogów II Copper Smelter). Both technologies are used at different physical and chemical conditions which results, in different impurities behavior. The paper presents flow sheets for copper production in a plant using the shaft furnace process and in another in which a single stage flash process is used. The metals distribution in particular semi-products is given as well as a method for elimination of impurities from the copper production cycle. Methods are also discussed for alloy and matte converting and copper refining to obtain low Pb and As concentrations in anode copper (0.3% Pb and 1500 ppm As maximum) that are being used in the KGHM Polska Meidz plants. Useful co-operation between the plants using different technologies, aimed at the limiting the effect of undesired impurities on the quality of blister copper produced, is also described.

In mid 1993, Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, based in Germany got the order to develop a sampling tool capable of penetrating all different types of seabed sediments including cobbles and boulders and into bedrock. BHP and their partners Benguela Concessions Ltd., had been convinced by the Bauer Trench Cutter Technology and a large scale test in Germany that this system will be the right one to fulfill their expectations for sampling the diamond area off the coast of Namibia. The technique of the tool is based on Bauer&apos;s standard cutter technology, which is widely used for the installation of cut-off and diaphragm walls all around the world. The two counterrotating cutter wheels with 12.1 tom torque each cut an area of 3 x 1.2 m (up to 3 x 3 m are possible). The material mixed with seawater was then pumped to the separation plant on board the vessel Geomaster with a capacity of approximately 700 m3/h. Cutter wheels and mud pump were mounted on a special cutter frame and connected by wire ropes and hydraulic hoses to the vessel. An outer frame with four telescopic legs supported the cutter vertically on the uneven seabed and allowed a controlled penetration of the tool up to 6 m into the diamond bearing ground. The tool required a total power installed of approximately 800 kW. All hoses, the 6-inch mud hoses as well as the hydraulic hoses, were stored and compensated on drums on board suitable for a water depth of up to 200 m. Launch and recovery of the tool was effected through the moon pool of the vessel and the 25 m high, special designed drill tower. The 65? to sampling tool had been commissioned in early 1994 in Cape Town. After intensive testing the sampling programme of more than 4000 holes could be successfully completed by January 1995.

Spoil piles are produced routinely in open cut coal mines. Spoil piles may contain waste coal and other carbonaceous horizons. Coal and carbonaceous materials react with oxygen in the atmosphere, producing heat. If the rate at which heat is generated is greater than the rate at which heat can be dissipated, the temperature of the spoil pile rises. If the heating remains unchecked, spontaneous combustion can occur. Spontaneous combustion poses significant safety, environmental and economic problems if it should become established in spoil piles. Using the basic features of self heating in spoil, the use of model is directed toward developing quantitative prediction of spontaneous combustion in open cut coal mine spoil Piles.

Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Australia identified a number of issues in regard to the skill levels, labour turnover and productivity of our service technicians. In 1994 we were experiencing a labour turnover rate of 42 per cent per annum amongst our technicians. Exit interviews were held with each individual and one of the major areas of dissatisfaction was the degree of product training provided on our equipment, compared to what is required to be competent across the range of our products. These tradespersons were prepared to accept the reduced remuneration that an OEM offers, for the benefit of comprehensive, professional training that, in theory, could be provided. The truth is that we were achieving approximately 40 per cent of our target for training hours because of the demands of field service, pre-deliveries, etc. So, the summary was the same as the industry was experiencing at that time because of skilled labour shortages, production demands, etc people were employed and thrown in at the deep end. A recipe for failure that will be successful every time.

The present industrial practice used to separate aqueous cobalt from nickel is multistage solvent extraction processing. This paper describes a different but simpler treatment technology. The proposed technology has been applied to cobalt/nickel hydroxide intermediate solids produced from the treatment of Electrochemical Machining (ECM) waste sludge, The process consists of dissolving the cobalt/nickel hydroxides in basic cyanide solutions. Cobalt and nickel form aqueous .solution metal cyanide complexes. Nickel can be selectively precipitated from the solution as a nickellic hydroxide solid. Cobalt can be recovered from the leach solution by precipitation of a cobaltous/cobaltic cyanide double salt. The double salt product can then be subsequently treated to produce an appropriate cobalt product. The process chemistry, proposed fiowsheet and preliminary reagent costs are presented and discussed.

"One of the proposed mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of silicosis is that inhaled silica dust activates a ""respiratory burst"" in pulmonary phagocytes, such as macrophages and neutrophils. This increase in oxidative metabolism results in enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species which if produced in excess, would overwhelm natural defense mechanisms and cause damage to the lung parenchyma. This damage would then result in scarring, fibrosis, and decreased gas exchange.Weiss and LoBuglio' have listed several oxygen species produced by phagocytes which may be involved in cellular injury. These oxidants include superoxide anion, hydrogen, peroxide, hydroxyl radical, and hypochlorous acid. Superoxide anion (0;) is generated from molecular oxygen by the plasma membrane bound enzyme NADPH oxidase according to the following reaction:Once generated, superoxide anion can form hydrogen peroxide:In the presence of myeloperoxidase and halide, hydrogen peroxide can form hypochlorous acid:Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide can also form highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals can be generated slowly by the Haber-Weiss reaction:In addition. hydroxyl radical production can be catalyzed via the Fenton reaction:Hydroxyl radicals can also be generated from the reaction of superoxide and hypochlorous acid as follows:Recent investigations suggest that, in addition to the reactive oxygen species discussed above, nitric oxide may be a potential mediator of silica-induced toxicity.2-4 Nitric oxide (NO') can be generated by the cytosolic enzyme nitric oxide synthase according to the following reaction:NO synthase exists in two forms. i.e.. a constitutive. Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent form and an inducible. Ca2+-calmodulin-independent form. In pulmonary phagocytes. the activity of the constitutive form of NO synthase is low. However. NO synthase can be induced in macrophages and neutrophils by a variety of stimulants such as lipopolysaccharide. interferon y. chemotactic peptide, platelet activating factor, or leukotriene B4.3.5Once generated. nitric oxide can combine with superoxide anion to form peroxynitrite as follows:Peroxynitrite is a potent oxidizing agent. In addition, peroxynitrite can form peroxynitrous acid. which in turn can produce hydroxyl radical and nitrogen dioxide (all of which exhibit strong oxidizing potential) by the following reactions:Oxygen metabolites have been shown to cause lung damage in vivo.6 Such damage includes edema. leakiness of the alveolar endothelial/epithelial barriers, and airway constriction.7 Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide have been associated with membrane damage and cell lysis.8 These oxidants have also been associated with alteration of cytoskeletal structures at cell-cell junctions and elevation of transepithelial conductance in cultured monolayers.9 Macrophages or neutrophils can be stimulated by bacteria or phorbol myristate acetate to produce sufficient oxidant levels to lyse lymphoma cells.10 This cell killing is inhibited by catalase but is unaffected by superoxide dismutase. hydroxyl radical scavengers. or azide. i.e., an inhibitor of peroxidase. This implicates hydrogen peroxide as the active oxidant. Similarly. Weiss et al.11 have reported that hydrogen peroxide is critical in the death of cultured endothelial cells due to neutrophil activation. In addition. hydroxyl radicals generated by monocytes have been associated with cell injury.12 Lastly. peroxynitrite has been shown to oxidize sulfhydryl groups and to inactivate proteinase inhibitor making the lung more susceptible to damage caused by phagocytotic enzymes.' Therefore. a strong case can be made that activated pulmonary macrophages and neutrophils are capable of causing oxidant injury. This chapter presents in vitro and in vivo data indicating that silica is associated with the production of reactive oxygen species from these pulmonary phagocytes."
