In this study, selective flocculating of diaspore using anion macromolecular reagent as flocculant was tested to separate diaspore from alum-silicate minerals. Firstly, the effect of pH on settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite dispersions has been investigated. The results show that the maximum settling speed of diaspore and kaolinite appeared re-spectively at pH7 and pH3.33 which is close to the point of zero charge (PZC) of diaspore (6.8) and kaolinite(3.5). This result is in well agreement with the double electric layer theory. Secondly, the settling behavior of diaspore and kaolinite particles in different anion flocculant solution have been researched. The results indicate that flocculant solution concentration significantly affect the selectivity and the flocculating performance of anion molecular. In high concentration solution, both diaspore and kaolinite have faster settling rate compared to blank solution. How-ever, in low concentration solution, the anion macromolecular can enhance the settling rate of diaspore remarkably but has no apparent effect on the settling rate of kaolinite. This result suggests that the tested anion flocculant is a promising reagent for de-silica of diasporic bauxite. Lastly, FTIR method was employed to probe the adsorption mechanism of flocculant on diaspore and kaolinite. The results reveal that there are anion flocculant characteristic bands on the spectra of diaspore but no obvious characteristic bands of flocculant on the FTIR spectrum of kaolinite. This result is in good correspondence with settling test.

Effect of Anionic Surfactant on Silica Particle Attachment at the Oil-Water Interface Controlling particle attachment is crucial where powdered solids come into contact with oil and water. Particles are trapped in a deep energy well at the oil-water interface, stabilising emulsions. Here it is shown that adding anionic surfactant causes dramatic changes to the bulk and interfacial structure of silica particle-stabilised oil-in-water emulsions. Exposing particle-stabilised drops to surfactant concentrations above the critical micelle concentration enhances the rate and extent of creaming and flocculation. Mixing particle-stabilised emulsions with surfactant solutions causes drop fragmentation. As the surfactant concentration increases, the average drop size decreases and particles are displaced from the interface during the mixing process.

The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride, and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element-bearing phosphates and fluorocarbonates has been examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study has found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of rare earth elements (REEs) from various sources in the aqueous media. The thermodynamic calculations in this study have indicated that the speciation of REEs with the anions tends to increase the overall solubility of the REE-bearing minerals. However, in some cases, strong precipitation of REEs with some of these anions causes an adverse effect on the solubility of these elements. It has been found that sulfate ion has the most pronounced effect on the solubility compared to nitrate and chloride, in which the latter two acids exhibited almost identical results. The calculated results have indicated that REE-oxide (hydrated) is the easiest compound to dissolve, followed by carbonate, phosphate, fluoride, sulfate, fluoro-carbonate, and oxalate in that order.

The main goal of this paper is to investigate the effects of permeability anisotropy in Large Open Pit (LOP) mines for problems that exhibit homogeneous anisotropic characteristics. The most important effect of the groundwater flow in open pit mines is on the stability of the pit slopes. This study will investigate the effects of having increased permeability in both horizontal and vertical directions on three aspects of LOP behavior, location of phreatic surface, pore pressure distribution and stability of slopes. The hydromechanical coupling is simulated using a one-way coupling approach. The Shear Strength Reduction method (SSR) is applied to assess the stability of slopes. The studies performed in this paper suggest that anisotropy in permeability leads to a significantly different regime of pore pressure dissipation depending on two aspects, ratio of anisotropy and the relative magnitude of permeability to simulated time. As a result, variation in safety factors and the location and depth of the failure surface must be expected.

IN PREVIOUS papers,1 the author has reported the results of experiments on the straining in tension of a single crystal test piece, about 0.6 in. long, of vacuum-melted electrolytic iron containing 1.8 per cent. of silicon. The crystal was originally in the "as cast" condition, and was stressed slowly along a tetragonal axis so that slipping along conjugate gliding planes finally transformed the original cylindrical portion into a pair of fracture wedges. One of these fracture wedges was sectioned along the stress axis in a plane at right angles to the edge of the wedge. A metallographic study of this plane of -section led to the conclusion that slip had taken place in the (111) direction along (112) planes making a V shape with the stress axis. The present paper describes the results of scratch-hardness tests conducted on the same section, in order to determine the distribution of strain hardness therein, followed by annealing, and considers the resulting variations in hardness. These observations supplement those made by Krivobok2 on similar material reduced 25 per cent. by hammering (i. e., by impact) in the cold. In order to investigate ageing effects, two small crystals of the same alloy were also tested.

THE brass-rolling industry has not had a great deal of experience with antimony in its product. There have been some recent excursions with antimony as a corrosion inhibitor in tubes, but in sheet brass it has been regarded with apprehension and generally avoided. This is not to say that [ ] contaminations have never occurred, and probably a great many brass mill men have had their own ideas on the effect of such contamination. Our own views were based upon certain experiences some years ago with strip castings that split lengthwise in the early stages of rolling. The nature of this splitting is shown in Fig. I, from a photograph taken in 1922 as a record of 20 bars of 65-35 common brass made with an antimonial brand of copper. These bars were cast 6 ¾ in. wide by 1 in. thick by 45 in. long. In the first pass through the rolls, 19 of the 20 split lengthwise throughout their length, while each half curved outward in a wide arc as it emerged from the rolls. [ ] In those days, if splitting was not a frequent occurrence, it was not unfamiliar. One can recall periods of short duration when large amounts of common brass would behave in this way. There was nothing imaginary about these spells. The affected metal would split lengthwise in the breaking rolls, and no maneuvering of mill practice made any difference. The condition would descend like a plague, demoralize the mill for several days, and disappear. It is doubtful if anyone knew the cause-however many explanations may have been current. The amount of impurities to be processed in a copper smelting process has increased for recent years because of an increase in the electronic scrap amount. It has been found that Sb and Ni effect on the operation of our copper electrorefining process. It is found that the current efficiency of the copper electrorefining tended to be decreased as the Ni concentration in the electrolyte increased. The passivation of the process seemed to be more related to SO4 concentration in the electrolyte rather than the Ni concentration in it. The current efficiency decreased when the Sb content in the anode was high. A high Sb content in the anode caused easy passivation by forming a gel-like film in the slime layer. We have developed a method to for see the anode passivation in a short time while generating a slime layer. We confirmed the tendency of passivation through the experiment of changing Pb content in anode. Passivation was easily occur with an increase in Pb content in the anode. The amount of slime increased as the Pb content in the anode increased. This suggests that passivation was facilitated because liquid diffusion near the anode was inhibited. INTRODUCTION The amount of impurities to be processed in copper smelting has been growing in recent years because the amount of electronic scrap has increased. Figure 1 shows that the contents of Sb and Ni in copper anodes have increased since 2007.High Sb and Ni contents in the copper anode decreased the current efficiency of the process and made the quality of copper cathode poor because of the anode passivation and the formation of floating slime in the electrolyte during electrorefining. If these influences of impurities are suppressed, it would be possible to make copper electro-refining current density higher and to process much amount of electronic scrap. We examined the components of our copper electro-refining process like anode composition, slime properties and electrolyte composition, and investigated the mechanism by which Sb and Ni affect passivation and current efficiency. Iron ore pelletizing using compressive and shear action on wet mixture feed has been studied. The physical properties, namely, moisture content, drop strength, green compressive strength (GCS), dry compressive strength (DCS), porosity, and cold crushing strength (CCS), have been studied. Pelletizing tests were carried out on four different types of ore, namely, hematite ore, magnetite ore, goethite ore, and sinter return fines. The inference of shear forces on silica distribution index in dry pellet has been studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Significant improvement in physical strength was observed due to compressive and shear forces on the pellet mixture feed. However, decrease in moisture content and ball porosity has been observed. Silica distribution index improved by 1.72 times for hematite ore, 1.47 times for magnetite ore, and 1.68 times for goethite ore. It has been found that bubble cavity has been reduced which is good indicator in terms of physical properties.

The effects of application of steady and pulsed electric current on the cast microstructures of ingots of a 7050 type aluminum alloy have been experimentally investigated over a solidification rate range of 0.1-10 K/s. This involved the application of an electric current of 465-930 mA/cm2 of melt surface area to laboratory-size ingots solidified in a unidirectional manner. Within the ranges of electric current density and solidification rate investigated, the applied electric current reduced the average dendrite, grain, and second-phase particle size. It also made the size distribution of the second-phase particles more uniform. The mechanism for the observed refinement of the cast microstructure by the applied electric current is not well understood. The potential effects of heat-induced local convections, shear stress-induced fragmentation of dendrites, increased temperature gradient due to Joule heating and the thermal and constitutional supercooling engendered by Peltier, Thompson, and Joule heating are discussed.

The feed to Chadurmalu iron ore concentrator plant is a mixture of magnetite and haematite iron ore with a Fe/FeO ratio of about 8. The feed to plant, after grinding via wet SAG mill, is pre-separated by wet low intensity magnetic separator. Magnetic product is conducted to magnetite processing circuit for producing magnetite concentrate, and nonmagnetic product is directed to haematite processing circuit. Due to surface oxidization of magnetite particles and a decrease in magnetic attraction properties, significant amount of these particles are misled to tailing which results in decreasing the efficiency of haematite processing circuit. This problem can be remedied by using magnetic drum separator with more magnetic intensity and/or gradient. In this paper, the replacement of LIMS separators with wet medium intensity magnetic separators with a field intensity of 3800 gauss on drum surface (MIMS) have been suggested and considered as the most suitable solution to prevent the loss of magnetite particles. The results of carried out investigations with replacement of drum separators in industrial scale, showed that utilizing MIMS in magnetite processing circuit resulted in increasing final concentrate weight recovery on average by 2.59%, without any adverse effect on the concentrate quality; decreasing the magnetite content in the feed to high gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) by about 3.5%; decreasing the feed to floatation part by about 7% and consequently decreasing consumption of chemical reagents; increasing Fe/FeO ratio of the feed to plant. IN previous publications1 it was shown that a scalar model of any weighty structure, where the stresses produced are mainly due to gravita-tional forces, will behave similarly to its prototype if the model and proto-type material are the same arid the model is placed in a centrifugal field of force (substituted for the gravitational field) which has been increased in the same proportion as the linear model scale is decreased. This principle is now being applied to a study of the behavior of mine structures in an attempt to determine the laws that control them. The importance of using models as a means of solving mining problems has been discussed previously, yet it may be well to reiterate here that this method of research and type of solution have been productive of far-reaching results in other engineering fields, notably those of hydraulics and aerodynamics. Model research is a comparatively cheap and time-saving method of checking practical experience. Up to the present time the best guide to what will happen underground has been the judgment of the man who has observed most and been longest acquainted with the local conditions. His experimental work underground is limited by the elements of cost, time and danger, while failure is seldom permissible. In a model, as in a test tube, all elements that affect the solution of a problem are under definite control. Each element may be varied independently at will and its effects noted. Experimental work on a small-scale model may there¬fore be performed at a comparatively small expenditure of time and money, instead of on a full scale in the mine, where the cost, time, and danger elements are necessarily great. The experiments described in this paper are to be considered as part of a progress report and a continuation of Technical Paper 425. One object of the research program is to make each experiment point the way for further research on that particular phase of the general problem. Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) consolidated ZrB2+SiC composites using nano-powders (around 40 nm) showed smaller grains compared to those using micron size powders and segregation of SiC into islands is minimal but with higher oxidation of ZrB2 to form ZrO2 in nano-composites. Argon-gas purging prior to SPS consolidation at around 2000 °C and 40 MPa of ZrB2+20vol.%SiC nano-powders was used to minimize the oxidation and obtain fine granules with high densification. The densification of the Argon-gas purged nano-composites is higher compared to those consolidated without Argon gas purging. The EDX analysis showed a strong reduction in the oxygen peak for the Argon gas purged composites. The XRD spectra also support this observation with less ZrO2 phase composition in Argon gas purged composites. The Vickers micro-hardness showed slightly lower values for Argon gas purged composites though they have higher densification.

The behaviour of arsenic and antimony during copper electrorefining was studied in order to identify the conditions under which good quality copper cathodes could be produced from anodes with high levels of these impurities. Examination of the effect of current density over the range 21 to 37 mA/cm2 indicated that the relative amounts of As and Sb entering the electrolyte affected the onset of passivation. When the ratio of As/Sb entering the electrolyte was greater than 2, the anodes showed no sign of passivation even at the highest current density; when the ratio was less than 2, the anodes passivated at 37 mA/cm2. Cathode analyses showed that anodes with an As/Sb dissolution ratio less than 2.0 tend to produce cathodes of inferior quality even at normal current densities (25.7 mA/cm2). The criterion of a minimum As/Sb dissolution ratio of 2.0, and mathematical correlations for the distribution of As and Sb between the electrolyte and slime developed in a previous study, allow the calculation of the maximum allowable Sb level in en anode for a given As concentration. Analyses of plant data at the CCR Division of Noranda Inc. for the last four years of operation have demonstrated that the use of this as a quality control tool has allowed the quality of copper cathodes to be maintained despite a significant increase in the average Sb levels in anode receipts.

SINCE the development of dispersion-hardenable lead-antimony alloys1 in the laboratories of the Western Electric Co., Inc., studies have been made of the effect of various third constituents on these alloys.2 This paper covers a study of the effect of small amounts of arsenic. This element is important since it occurs as an impurity in many commercial antimonial leads and the results obtained are particularly interesting as indicating a class of addition agents which exert a stabilizing effect on dispersion-hardened alloys. This Research & Development (R&D) study was conducted in the field of applied blasting engineering in Ethiopia, within the AKH Railway Project, which was built in Girena, within the boundaries of the province of Mersa, in the Basalt Quarry at km 346, Ashangi Formation, occured in Eocene geological time in the aphanitic trachibasalt. Under the scope of the study, which has been performed to determine the effects of the artificial discontinuities at different depths and the effects of artificial discontinuities through structural damage risk, three test areas, at the same location and same formation, were considered. Six numbers of artificial discontinuities, each 10 m (32, 81 ft) transverse, were created by using pre-splitting and drilling-blasting technology. The number of sequential artificial discontinuities on each test area is two and they have the same length. The length of artificial discontinuities are; 6,80 m (22,31 ft) at the first test area, 13,60 m (44,62 ft) at the second test area and 17,00 m (55,77 ft) at the third test area respectively. The distance between sequential artificial discontinuities is 8 m (26,25ft) on each test area. Thirty-one shots were executed in order to produce vibration (10 shots on the first test area, 11 shots on the second area, 10 shots on the third test area). One hundred and twenty-three seismic recordings were obtained during the execution of the shots by using 4 seismographs. The closest distance between the shot points and the nearest measuring station is 5,30 m (17,39 ft). During the shots, the rock was cracked and there was no fragmentation and/or fly rock. At the first test area, measured PPV values are between 25,40-127,00 mm/s (1-5 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the second test area, measured PPV values are between 76,20-177,80 mm/s (3-7 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 76,20 mm/s (3 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the third test area, measured PPV values are between 50,80-279,40 mm/s (2-11 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. Peak reduction rates in Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) values determined by measuring as follows: In the first test area 95,77% (106,00 mm/s to 4,48 mm/s) (4,17 in/s to 0,18 in/s), in the second test area 79,77% (176,00 mm/s to 35,60 mm/s) (6,93 in/s to 1,40 in/s), in the third test area 95,85% (from 205,00 mm/s to 8,55 mm/s) (from 8,07 in/s to 0,34 in/s). The arithmetic mean of the differences of PPV values (decrease rate) is 82,66% in the first test area, 69,37% in the second test area, and 92,03% in the third test area. The highest sound value is 138,50 dB and is defined as “noise”. When the measured parameter values are examined it was determined on the USBM norm graphs that these vibrations carry a risk of structural damage in the region before the first artificial discontinuity. While passing through artificial discontinuities the vibrations progress by losing energy and the vibrations passing through two artificial discontinuities do not carry structural damage risk under current conditions.

The selection of atmosphere composition is critical for controlling surface quality of reactive aluminum alloys during solution treatments. An improper selection of annealing atmosphere can result in surface blistering in AI-Mg and sub-surface depletion of lithium in AI-U ingots. To determine optimum atmosphere compositions for homogenizing A1-Mg and Al-Li alloys, Ii number of exploratory experiments were carried out in air, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide based atmospheres including reactive impurities or additive such as moisture and sulfur hexafluoride. This paper describes the influence of these atmospheres on high-temperature oxidation and sub-surface defects. The results are discussed in terms of the change in Pilling-Bedworth ratio.

Disintegration of the immediate shale roof in coal mines interferes with ventilation, production, and safety. The effect is seasonal and correlates with high levels of moisture in the intake ventilation air. Disintegration, though not completely understood, is caused by shale dilation and weakening upon exposure to atmospheric moisture. Fluctuating moisture conditions are particularly deleterious, and may be at least partially controlled by "tempering" the air before it is brought to the working places. Roof behavior was studied in an operating mine during a 12-month monitoring period. This approach can be used in developing criteria to reduce or prevent shale roof deterioration.
