Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) is considered carcinogenic after prolonged exposure. With increasing use of diesel-powered mining equipment in underground mines, miner?s exposure to DPM has been increasing. Most studies on the issue has been DPM control measures with few studies on diesel exhaust propagation patterns after leaving the tailpipes. This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the airflow pattern in an underground metal/nonmetal mine for a single heading. Several high DPM concentration areas are identified in the study and common practices for compliance are suggested. Airflow and DPM distribution are compared between blowing and exhausting face ventilation systems. Suggestions are also provided for the protection of miners in the face area.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."

It is both an honor and a pleasure for me to be the keynote speaker for the Paul F. Kerr's Symposium on Applied Mineralogy. Professor Kerr was a man for all seasons to his students, and he treated all students as distinct individuals. Philip Bethke in his memorial to Dr. Kerr summed up our remembrance best by stating that "We have lost our most successful educator-administrator-scholar, who was our steadfast teacher-counselor-mentor-friend." Discussed in the paper is the redesigned reserve/resource classification for solid minerals being put forth by the authors to replace the acting Russian classification of 19961. The new version is based on the traditional foundations of former Russian classifications and the principles of the ‘McKelvey box’, both categorizing mineral resources according to the degree of geological assurance and economic viability. Based on these approaches the classification deliberately deals with both reserve and resource categories very similar to those established by the Geneva Accords in terms of definitions implied. The authors proceed from the UN-ECE proposed concept of ‘reserves’ being a part of ‘total resources’ explored in great detail by geological and feasibility studies and economically mineable at the time of reporting. The draft classification distinguishes ‘proved’, ‘probable’ and ‘possible’ categories of reserves depending on the stage of feasibility assessment carried out, i.e. the degree of detail and accuracy with which modifying factors affecting mineability of an orebody are taken into account. The reserves are regarded as a product of feasibility assessment of ‘measured’, ‘indicated’ and ‘inferred’ resources. The portions of them not having been classified as ‘reserves’ are regarded as composed of two classes: ‘subeconomic’ and ‘potentially economic’ resources (or ‘resource base’). All the cells of the classification matrix are provided with traditional for Russia alphanumeric designations and appropriate UNFC codes. The classification scheme recommended is viewed as a step forward in improvement of the State inventory and reporting mineral resources in market conditions, conducive to cross-border professional collaboration in the field of providing reliable information on the mineral rawmaterials base of the world’s economy. Besides, it recommends an easy way to get rid of amethodological error in the UNFC classification scheme where consecutive stages of geologicalexploration are identified with a single inherent degree of geological assurance. During the last decade mechanical rock excavation has become increasingly widespread in the mining industry and, more in general, in excavation engineering. This technology, especially the tools and their operating mode, has developed according to empirical procedures and for this reason their validity should be ascertained by systematically re-examining the rock breakage processes. This topic has been approached in the framework of a joint research project involving the Universities of Cagliari (Italy) and Wollongong (Australia). The investigation has been carried out experimentally as well as with the methods of numerical modelling which is based on fracture mechanics principles. The first results of this integrated research led to the proposal of an interpretation of rock breakage by means of drag tools and to the identification of a basic correlation between the rake angle of the tool and the grain size of the rock fragments produced and, therefore, the energy efficiency of the operation.

Froth flotation is one of the most widely used beneficiation processes for fine and ultrafine coals and minerals. Maintaining optimal metallurgical performance in industrial flotation operation is still a challenging task owing to the lack of an effective tool to diagnose the flotation performance in realtime. For this purpose, a number of flotation performance monitoring systems with different working principles have been developed to provide instant feedback for process control and optimisation. In this paper, for the first time, five different flotation performance monitoring systems were systematically compared through an on-site trial in a coking coal flotation plant in Queensland, Australia. The monitoring systems were used to measure (i) gas holdup, (ii) overflowing froth velocity, (iii) overflowing froth height, (iv) air recovery and (v) drag force exerted by overflowing froth, in an industrial flotation column and the outputs of these systems were collected simultaneously at a wide range of operating conditions. For each monitoring system, the best regression model describing the correlation between the system output and the flotation performance was selected from various regression models (eg linear, quadratic, power-law and logarithmic) using the Akaike information criterion (AIC). A comparison of the coefficient of determination (R2 ), residual sum of squares (RSS) and measuring accuracy at 95 per cent confidence level of the best regression models of these monitoring systems suggested that the drag sensor outperformed the other systems at a wide range of flotation operating conditions. The superior performance of the drag sensor was attributed to its distinctive design that enabled intimate sensing of variation of the overflowing froth properties. Furthermore, the drag sensor had the ability to monitor feed ash content variation when the other operation variables were set almost constant.

THERE is nothing new about drag-line dredging for placer gold. The use of the separate unit for excavating preceded the large barge with bucket-line excavator mounted upon it, which has developed to a high state of perfection through use in every part of the world. But at present there is a vogue for a small, inexpensive plant to work economically the shallower gold gravel deposits that the bucket-line dredges do not work. The dragline dredge consists of the drag-line excavator, on caterpillar mounting on the edge of the dredging pond, which feeds the gravel to the washing plant, mounted on a floating barge in the pond. There have been more than twenty-five such plants built and operated in central and northern California and an unknown number in other States. There have been variations in details of design but the essentials are similar in all. I wish to describe the operation of a typical drag-line dredging plant, that of the Wyandotte Gold Dredging Company on the Farnan Ranch in the Oroville district. This organization of six active partners built their first plant on Wyandotte creek in the autumn of 1933. The operation was successful due to wise management, which was based upon good plant design and proper principles of operation. The partners elected one of their number, H. F. England, as manager with full control and responsibility. This plant and operation furnished the pattern for many subsequent ones.

"Fording Coal Ltd. is now in its fifth year of a 15-year contract to supply 3 million long tons of clean coal per annum to its Japanese steel-making customers. The mine employs both conventional truck-shovel and unconventional ""walking"" dragline coal mining techniques in multiple-seam pits. This paper describes the present and future application of the 60-cu.-yd dragline and truck-shovel pre-stripping fleet in 1•ecovering 5- to 40-footthick coal seams in mountainous terrain. Deep blastholes, coal flow demands, spring ""run-off"", seam and inter-seam thrust faulting, limited seam outcrop data and regional faulting are a few of the problems encountered in this application. The author discusses these problems and their solutions as applied at Fording Coal Ltd."

Paper presents project results investigating current techniques for dragline wire rope removal and the development of less hazardous means of performing the task. The cannon is the most prevalent method used in American surface mines. A cannon test program was conducted that used 40-and 50-grain primer cord to establish force produced using a 56-pound projectile. Socketlwedges were separated to establish separation force data. Two alternative removal methods, pendulum ram and portable hydraulic pusher, were developed and tested. Both provide sufficient force to effect separations under normal conditions on draglines with up to 78- cubic yard buckets.

MOST extraordinary of the technical developments in placer gold mining during the last five years has been the rise of the dragline dredge, by which is meant a floating washing plant for auriferous gravel, fed by a dragline excavator. The idea originated in the fall of 1933, when Horace Onyett constructed a floating washing plant to which gravel was delivered by a dragline excavator standing on dry land. Onyett's operation near Oroville, Calif., and another started by H. F. England later on Wyandotte Creek, Butte County, Calif., yielded '75 oz. of fine gold before the end of 1933. Although the first operation was abandoned shortly as un- profitable, the dragline-dredge method of gold recovery soon began to expand at a boom rate. As a matter of interest, the Onyett operation was taken over later by Lord and Bishop, who are re- ported to have succeeded in making it the first financially successful drag- line dredge. IN 1932, Horace Onyett at Oroville, California, built a practical floating washing plant along the general lines as now known, using a 24 in. by 12 ft. trammel; it was fed with a ½ yard dragline bucket, rated then at 200 yards per day. Onyett dubbed his plant a 'Doodlebug' which name has clung to this type of operation ever since. In general, the 'Doodlebug' dredge is the outgrowth of the depression of 1929, wherein many dirt contractors had surplus idle equipment and a few of them ventured to use it for placer mining. Many such plants were impractical and poorly designed and adapted often to locations not suited to the purpose. However out of the general idea came refinements until today dragline dredging has a very definite place in the gold production of the world. Many of the early operators, being mainly contractors without mining experience or technical knowledge of gold saving, geology, or mechanical design, naturally went through stages of trial and error until a workable unit became standard practice. Credit should be given Bodenson Iron Works of San Francisco, who did a notable job of pioneering and building of floating washing plants; also, to Lord and Bishop, contractors of Sacramento, who were among the early operators, and to several others who built and rebuilt their plants until the weak spots were strengthened to take the beating required, and yet deliver a high degree of efficiency.

GOLD was discovered in Alder Gulch, Virginia. City, Mont., on May 26, 1863. In a short time some 6000 people flocked to the new discovery, and on the banks of Alder Gulch six settlements sprang into existence, the principal one, Virginia City, alone surviving. This town today has a population of 800, and is the county seat of Madison County. It is estimated that between forty and fifty million dollars in gold was produced up to 1904. Virginia City is situated at the mouth of Alder Creek where that stream leaves the narrow canyon that cuts the steep foothills flanking Old Baldy Mountain, elevation 9572 ft., 12 mi. south. Virginia City itself is 5700 ft. above sea level.

The unique application of a large walking dragline in the mountains of southern West Virginia was developed and implemented by Hobet Mining, Inc. Hobet is an independent operating subsidiary of Ashland Coal and is headquartered at the No. 21 Mine in Boone County, West Virginia, near Danville. Hobet also operates the 07 Mine located in Logan County, West Virginia, near Holden. Both mines are similar in equipment and manpower used; both produce over 2,000,000 tons of clean coal annually. Each site encompasses large, contiguous properties with access to rail service. The larger of the two is the Boone County property; it totals nearly 40,000 acres and has ample reserves. In 1977, Hobet was in the process of constructing a preparation plant (Beth Station) at its 21 Mine site with a capacity for two million tons. One of the first orders of business was to design a mine plan that would provide production for the capacity of the plant. Coal production would come from a more than adequate reserve base using the most economical mining methods available. Hobet looked at different deep and surface mining methods to use in order to develop the property; ultimately, it was determined that the mountaintop removal method with the use of a large dragline was the most economical way to develop reserve. Prior to this time surface mining in mountainous Southern West Virginia was generally done by contour mining and/or augering techniques.

SummaryImproving dragline performance in the Canadian coal mines is critical to the continued success of the industry. Draglines represent a large capital investment and coal prices are low by historic standards. This paper argues that the introduction of monitoring, control, and navigation on draglines offers an opportunity to significantly reduce a dragline’s operating cost per cubic metre moved. To place the importance of this in perspective, a North Dakota mine calculates that every 1% increase in dragline productivity means a savings to the mine of US$340,000 per year. MonitorsAutomated dragline monitoring is a well established technology with commercial products available since the early 1980s. The three main reasons for placing monitors on draglines are (Walker, 1993):1. productivity increases: reduce variations between different operators’ performance across different shifts;2. quality increases: increase the percentage of ore and waste loads that go to the correct destination; and3. special projects (engineering projects): justify installing static field exciters and regulator upgrades; implement power management; aid operator training; study high performance buckets, rigging changes, and various excavation sequences.Mines as diverse as Kennecott’s Cordero- Rojo Complex in the United States and Natal Coal Corp.’s Optimum Mine in South Africa report dragline productivity increases of 10% to 20% in the region attributed to the implementation of dragline monitoring."

"A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts, the world’s mining equipment productivity has declined 20 percent during the past seven years (Lumley, 2014). Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear.The world’s mining industry fleet of more than 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually. This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations.Benchmarking equipment performance exposes the possibilitiesIn the September 2013 Mining Engineering cover story Graham Lumley and R. Adsero suggested that analyzing best practice equipment performance from an industrywide database for specific equipment performance improvement goals would be beneficial (Adsero, 2013). Benchmarking equipment performance by normalizing differences and then comparing specific measures of performance will provide a road map to improvement for those following the leaders. For those already performing at best practice levels, a benchmark confirms and bolsters what has already been achieved. As described in the SME February 2014 paper by this author, best practice is the average of the top 10 percent in annual output. Filling performance gaps identified by a comparison to best practice by investigating the details of the why and taking action to change, makes all the difference. This is true for all major mining equipment. Given the large gap between average performance and best practice performance most mining operations can benefit. Best practice performance provides a view of what is possible to the 90 percent majority of mining operations that are performing below the top 10 percent.For dragline mining operations, identifying specific characteristics and practices of leading dragline performance will provide a reference for comparison."
