Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. However, when the transportation of stone is also considered, the desired end is to achieve that delivered cost which maximizes the company f s net return. Several alternatives are available for treating lover grade gold ores averaging 0.04 to 0.10 ounce per ton. These include heap, vat and agitation leaching and may involve conventional zinc precipitation or carbon adsorption-electrowinning systems. Each of these processes have their inherent economic and operating advantages and disadvantages and the selection of the optimum method for a given gold ore is solely based on economic evaluation of the applicable processes. In this paper an effort is made to provide engineering feasibility estimates for the above processes under varying operational conditions such as ore grade and price of gold.

A contained nuclear explosion is proposed to produce a chimney of broken ore well below the water table. After the chimney is filled with water and reaches hydrostatic equilibrium, oxygen, under pressure, is introduced near the bottom of the mass of broken rock. The increase in solubility of oxygen at high hydrostatic pressure is sufficient to initiate the oxidation of the primary sulfides: chalcopyrite and pyrite. The oxidation and dissolution of these sulfides produces enough heat to increase the temperature of the ore and water in the chimney as much as 1000 to 150°C. The rate of dissolution of chalcopyrite becomes so rapid under these conditions that the rate of recovery is no longer limited by the rate of chalcopyrite dissolution, but by the degree of exposure and other factors. Means of solution control and distribution of oxygen in the chimney have been examined in some detail. A calculational model utilizing experimentally determined solubility rates is utilized to estimate the temperature rise in the chimney and the rate of copper recovery as a function of initial temperature, sulfide content of ore, size of sulfide particles, and fraction of sulfide exposed to solution.

The Bagdad district is 67 kilometers west of Prescott, Arizona, (Figure 1). The area north of the Old Dick and Bruce Mines was originally mapped by Anderson, Scholz and Strobell between 1943 and 1945, (1). The region is perhaps better known for the Bagdad porphyry copper deposit of tertiary age. However, 2 to 5 kilometers south of this deposit are several small massive sulfide occurrences in a eugeosynclinal Precambrian greenschist environment. More specifically, in. the Bridle formation of the Yavapai schist series. Three of these mines - Old Dick, Bruce and Copper Queen - were mined by Cyprus Mines Corporation between 1957 and 1977, and produced nearly 2mm tons of 3.6% copper and 12% zinc. These deposits occur at the interface between andesite and rhyolite and are stratiform in character. Certain structural and textural properties of the Bruce orebody suggest that remobilization of the massive sulfides occurred at some period during the metamorphic history of the area.

The US Bureau of Mines compared column flotation using either fine or coarse bubbles with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a &.7% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrate with 87% recovery, compared with 43.8% and 43.5% Cr2O3-grade rougher concentrates with 85% and 77% recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse- and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5% Cr2O3 with 95% recovery, exceeding conventional flotation, which produced 35.6% Cr2O3 -grade concentrates with 87% recovery.

The choice of fragmentation method is one of the most fundamental aspects of mine design, and often has a major impact on the safety and economic viability of an operation. Almost exclusively, underground mining operations rely on either mechanical excavation or drill and blast techniques to extract rock. Each of these fragmentation methods has distinct advantages and disadvantages, and each is appropriate, and economic, for different mining conditions. However, the choice of fragmentation method can have a pronounced effect on the amount of damage created in the rock mass surrounding the opening. This paper reviews a number of case studies where both mechanical excavation and traditional drill and blast were used in underground mines. Ground support requirements in the mechanically excavated areas are compared to the support requirements in the blasted sections in order to demonstrate the potential safety and cost benefits of the various fragmentation methods.

When prospectors discovered mineralized outcrops in Pine Creek Canyon in 1916, little did they know the site was destined to become one of the world's greatest tungsten mines. Located outside Bishop in California's rugged Sierra Nevada mountain range, the mine's development imposed unique challenges to the hardiest of mining men. In its early years, the Pine Creek operation was plagued by bad luck and poor timing. But through the perseverance of a dynamic group of mining personalities, it would gain world class status. Pine Creek tungsten supplied much of the defense needs of the United States during World War II and put the Bishop area on the map as a major contributor to the nation's stockpile of strategic metals. The mine's history was shaped by world politics, the ups and downs of metals demand and economic survival through technological innovations. In contrast to many mines, Pine Creek's workings went horizontally into and then up inside the mountains - nearly to the ridgetops. This resulted in the name "Mine in the Sky" being attached to the operation. The origin of Pine Creek's ore bodies is related to the emplacement of a portion of the Sierra Nevada batholith about 100 million years ago. During the intrusive process, granitic magmas engulfed overlying calcareous sedimentary rocks, flooding them with silica-rich hydrothermal fluids and metamorphosing them to skarn. The fluids also contained tungsten, molybdenum and copper. They precipitated as scheelite, molybdenite and chalcopyrite, respectively, during the metamorphic process. The ore-bearing skarns occur as near-vertical tabular pendants in the intrusive rocks. These were later exposed by the uplift of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and glacial erosion.

All technologies move through a cycle from infancy to maturity. Thickened tailings have moved into the young adulthood phase of its development. Many mining companies like the idea of reducing their water-taking and water disposal issues. This limits the risks associated with traditional surface water-covered tailings facilities and the reduced dilution possible through underground disposal of thickened or paste tailings. Just as home theater systems advertised as ?plug and play? are rarely quite that straightforward, implementing and improving a thickened-tailings system has its challenges. However, the technology has also developed in recent years so it is more accessible. Some success factors have emerged because of the new technologies. Is thickened tailings the right solution? The first step in success with thickened tailings should be whether it is, in fact, the right solution for a particular mine. And, if so, what type of thickening is best. The answer depends on several factors, including: ? Grain size: The grain size that is optimal for maximizing mill recovery is some-times not suitable for thickening. Other mineralogical factors, such as mica content, may also influence whether the tailings are suitable. ? Water issues: Available water does not always have the purity necessary for the process. Another issue to consider is that if water is in short supply, as is increasingly often the case, thickening may be a way to reduce the need to both take and dispose of water.

Environmental management and planning requires the integration of large volumes of disparate information from many sources and the analysis of this information with efficient tools for assessment and evaluation. Effective methods of communication that allow interactive participation in the planning, assessment and decision-making processes are also very important. The VULCAN software package from Maptek (Pty) Ltd comprises a large number of 3D graphical tools within an interactive 3D interface called ENVISAGE. These tools are designed and developed to help engineers and scientists to identify and solve environmental problems. The combination of VULCAN 3D Software and the I-SiTE 3D Laser Imaging system leads to powerful solutions for environmental management. This paper presents the capabilities of this integrated system and its applications for environmental management.

High pressure fluid energy grinding, or jet milling, is a versatile method of continuously fracturing solids into fine particles to gain substantial increases in exposed surface area. Applications in the minerals industries include calcium carbonate, talc, barytes, mica, diatamaceous earth, bauxite, rutile, coal, kaolin, sepiolite, diamonds, etc. The basic principles can be extended to provide continuous drying and delivery of discrete particles from a wet process slurry. The main design and operational features of jet mills and dryers are described, relating energy consumption for both air and steam milling and hot air drying techniques. Mean particle sizes in the order of 1 micron are achieveable from pre-milled feeds, or maintained from similar slurries in the drying mode. Aspects of feed preparation and multi-stage processing are discussed.

It scarcely 1s possible to read a new issue of any of the principal mining trade journals without noting some mention of a major new overseas mining venture with which one or more domestic companies are involved. These projects seem to follow a fairly consistant pattern; most are large open pit mines, with relatively low grade ore bodies but huge reserves; the total price tag will be in nine significant figures and around half or more of the total cost will be for infrastructure. West1 noted that nearly $7 billion is being invested annually for new mining projects and the expansion of existing mining ventures, in the free world. He anticipates that by the year 1975 such investments would reach the $10-11 billion annual figure, and that in the five year period 1972-76 total capital requirements can be expected to aggregate around $45 billion. The proportion of this total investment which will be financed in some manner is difficult to estimate because of the variety of available financing arrangements. West estimated that around 75% of the total capital would come from internally generated funds, with the balance from external sources. Conceivably a substantially higher percentage could be attributable to external financing, especially it the trend of recent mineral development in Canada and Australia is any criterion, and of course, including local sales of equity as a part of the package.

Marine black shales of Paleozoic age in the Western United States that exceed 10 weight percent organic carbon contain as much as 5,000 ppm vanadium, 1,000 ppm molybdenum, 1,300 ppm nickel, 600 ppm cobalt, 16 ppm silver, 7,000 ppm chromium, 18,000 ppm zinc, 280 ppm cadmium, and 350 ppm selenium. Depositional settings include: (1) continental-rise and marginal-ocean basins, (2) continental-shelf and foreland basins, and (3) cratonic-platform embayments. Most of these metalliferous organic-rich shales have not been examined for resources because of rapid weathering and poor exposures which preclude easy sampling of unoxidized rock necessary to determine actual concentration and residence of indigenous metals. Generally, the marine black shales of Paleozoic age in the Western United States are richer in metals than marine Paleozoic black shales in the Eastern United States.

This paper offers a comprehensive solution to the problem of dust emissions at belt conveyor transfer points. It discusses details of enclosure design and presents a straightforward procedure for calculating required dust control exhaust volumes. Many design variables are taken into account which heretofore have been commonly ignored or inadequately considered. These include belt widths, belt speeds, enclosure openings, material flow rates, material bulk densities, material lump sizes, height of material fall, material temperature, and ambient air temperature. All of these quantities are handled by means of a "fill-in-the-blanks" type of calculation form which permits quick, reliable solutions by relative "non- experts".

Arizona leads all other states in the value of gemstones produced with an annual production which exceeds $3,000,000. Gemstones are an important component of the mineral wealth of the State. Turquoise, peridot, chrysocoll a, petrified wood, fire agate and crystallized mineral specimens are among the gemstones commercially mined. Numerous additional deposits are operated by hobbyists. The State's reputation as a source of gemstones and specimens for the collector and lapidary adds to the economy of the State by attracting tourists. Production of gemstones further adds to the State's economy through employment in the value added gemstone processing industries and by employment of Native American craftsmen.

Cyclones have become standard unit operations in mineral processing for both dewatering mineral slurries and for making separations at given particle sizes. Conventional cyclones are normally able to make moderately sharp cuts. However, the limited ability to control water flow out of the apex means that cyclones have difficulty handling fluctuations in feed. Underflow-regulated cyclones are cyclones with a rubber boot attached to the underflow. This boot acts as a non-return valve and restricts flow out of the apex of a cyclone. Normally, this type of restriction on a cyclone causes severe difficulties in cyclone operation. However, by adding a siphon arm to the overflow, water flow can be controlled. The siphon arm creates a vacuum that reduces or eliminates the air core, permitting better control of the ratio of water flow out of the overflow and underflow. A Linatex-developed underflow-regulated cyclone was compared to a conventional cyclone for its ability to dewater a sand slurry. The underflow-regulated cyclone produced slurries with solids contents as high as 80% in the underflow. Conventional cyclones produced lower solids content in the underflow under similar conditions.

INTRODUCTION Prior to 1705, underground mining was limited to mineral deposits located above or a very small distance below the water table. The development of the steamdriven mining pump was motivated by the need to extract minerals from deposits considerably lower than the water table. Today, the majority of mine pumps are driven by electric motors, although some small utility pumps are driven by compressed air. Of the numerous types of pumps that might be applied to mine service, the two types used most frequently underground are the centrifugal and plunger pumps. Each of these types has its proper application. In most instances, plunger pumps are best for handling low water volumes against high heads, while centrifugal pumps effectively handle either low or high water volumes against low heads or high water volumes against high heads. This chapter describes pumps applied to underground mine service, where the mine service consists of mine drainage (removing mine water as it accumulates), mine dewatering (removing water from a flooded mine), and pumping for special applications such as hydraulic mining and hydraulic hoisting. CENTRIFUGAL AND PLUNGER PUMPS Modern mine pumps are classified as either centrifugal (kinetic) or plunger (positive-displacement) pumps. The following paragraphs describe each of these classifications. Centrifugal Pumps Centrifugal pumps may be grouped into various types, depending upon their various features: Number of Stages: In a single-stage pump, the total head is developed by one impeller, while a multi¬stage pump utilizes two or more impellers acting in one casing to develop the total head. Fig. I shows a cutaway view of a single-stage horizontal split-case double -section centrifugal pump. Fig. 2 shows a cutaway view of a six-stage medium-pressure split-case diffuser-type centrifugal pump. Type of Casing: A volute pump has a casing in the form of a spiral or volute. A circular-casing pump has a casing of constant cross section concentric with the impeller. A diffuser pump is equipped with a diffuser that converts velocity head to pressure head. Shaft Position: A horizontal pump normally has the shaft in a horizontal position, while a vertical pump normally has the shaft in a vertical position. Fig. 3 illustrates a vertical turbine-type slurry pump. Suction: A single-suction pump equips the first stage with a single-suction impeller, with fluid entering the impeller on only one side. A 15 km water supply tunnel is being constructed in Buenos Aires, Argentinata expand the capacity of the existing system. Two 4.3 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunneling machines operating at times from the same shaft on a congested work site and advancing through sedimentary deposits underlying this wonderful city pose interesting challenges. As of January 1999approximately 50% of the tunnel has been excavated. Combined machine production rates of 1026 m/month have been achieved. Presentations made in prior proceedings can be referenced for details of the overall Project scope and for details of the tendering process. The purpose of this paper is to compliment those presentations by addressing now the execution of the work.

The Riverside Badlands Tunnel segment of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s Inland Feeder Project, was lined with a segmented concrete primary lining and a welded steel final lining with the annulus filled with Low-Density Cellular Concrete (really a grout). The paper describes a numerical modeling technique that was developed to determine safe grout placement procedures to avoid pipe flotation, and shows the relationship between flotation and the rheology of the liquid grout. Design details of the steel liners are often not well suited to grout placement, and recommendations are given on how to improve this.

Many coal beds in the State of Washington, pitching as much as 90°, offer unusual mining conditions. This paper describes methods and safe practices of mechanized mining in pitching bituminous-coal beds that have attracted the attention of mining people from most of the coal-producing countries of the world. The development and use of continuous miners as part of the mechanized program apply particularly to the Roslyn-Cle Elum coalfield, Kittitas County, Wash. All three mines now operating in the field use continuous miners and during 1957 furnished 72 percent of the State's total coal production. Mining operations are now conducted in three coal beds of the Roslyn-Cle Elum field. The coal measures range from 3-1/2 to 20 feet in thickness and vary in dip from 5° to 45° in the localities where the coal is mined.
