14.1 INTRODUCTION From the time the last recoverable gold is extracted from ore on a heap leach, the ore - now spent ore - changes from being the resource, indeed the raison d'etre of the operator, to a potential liability. The spent ore contains process chemicals and constituents leached from the ore both in the interstitial pore water in the heap and on the surfaces of spent ore. If these chemical species were released to the environment, it could have a potential impact on the quality of both surface water and groundwater resources. Accordingly, the spent ore must be left in a condition where it does not present a potential environmental liability. This can be accomplished either on a decommissioned pad or, if the heap leach is operated as a load/unload scheme, in a waste facility. In general, the residual cyanide level in the spent ore is the perceived controlling factor when determining whether the leached material is suitable for abandonment. Regulatory authorities set permit conditions for heap leach abandonment in terms of residual cyanide levels, for example, Smith and Struhsacker (1987). This chapter discusses cyanide degradation and methods for detoxifying a heap leach in order to meet regulatory limits/permit conditions for abandonment. Cyanide degradation and detoxification by "natural" processes are described initially, based on the chemistry and geochemistry discussed in Chapter 13. This leads to a review of chemical treatment processes for detoxification of spent ore. The advantages and apparent disadvantages are then appraised. 14.2 NATURAL DEGRADATION AND DETOXIFICATION For the purposes of discussion, "natural" detoxification processes can be divided into two alternatives: • Passive abandonment (the so-called "do nothing" option); and • Water In the first alternative, the spent ore is merely left on the leach pad to age; the second alternative involves the flushing of the spent ore with water.

Problems of how to use artificial intelligence (AI) methods and expert systems (ES) to control complex industrial projects have lately become significant in practical terms. Mining ventilation systems undoubtedly belong to complex multi dimensional objects of control with stochastic nonstationary and nonlinear processes. Formal models based on automated ventilation control, do require awkward algorithmic solutions, moreover, a number of tasks become the operator's headache, and the quality of their solution depends on his experience and intuition. These tasks include: - identifying pre-accidental situations and determining their causes; - making well-grounded decisions with regard to changing ventilation regimes, forecast of mining operations taken account of; - controlling ventilation systems in emergency situations, e.g. when in accident, etc. It is in this context that we have for a number of years been investigating how to practically use AI methods for operative control in dynamic aero-and-gas mining processes, one of our research directions being devoted to working out a consulting programme for the ventilation system operator. Our researching and modeling problem was identification of aero-and-gas situation in different parts of ventilation network and its interpretation in order to determine possible causes for gas regime changing and unexpected consequences. We would single out the following stages in this task: I. Operative information procession coming to the data base from the sensors and analysis of hypothetical versions (using the associative rules base) with regard to factors which have caused significant parameter fluctuations (e.g. C%(t), H(t), Q(t) etc.)., 2. Selection of hypotheses in the knowledge base and forming conclusions in accordance with reliability scale. 3. Clarifying the obtained conclusions in dialogue with the operator. 4. Correcting the associative rules base.

Plants obtain nutrients from both air and soil. They absorb carbon dioxide mainly from the air, although some carbon dioxide may be dissolved in soil water which is absorbed by plant roots. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Growing plants use water more than any other biological substance. Plant nutrients dissolve in soil water and enter the plant via root absorption. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. Water also supplies hydrogen and oxygen to plants. Plant roots absorb nutrient cations or anions by contact exchange with soil clay particles. Inorganic or mineral nutrients essential to plants are supplied through the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants usually is less than 5% of their weight. In most crop-growing areas, much of this nutrition is inadequately supplied from soil reserves and must be provided by fertilizers. The role of the fertilizer industry is to provide economical, efficient, good quality fertilizers to improve or maintain soil productivity for optimum crop production. The essential plant nutrients other than carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen which often must be added to soils or plants are categorized as primary nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), secondary nutrients (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur), and micronutrients (boron, chlorine, copper iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc). These classifications are based on quantity of nutrients utilized by plants and do not imply their function or degree of necessity. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all fertilizer minerals contain the plant nutrients in a chemical form available to the plant. A product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient source or fertilizer.

The subject of this paper is broad and complex. Secondly, it is near and dear to the authors' hearts. Therefore, it doesn't seem possible to deal with every aspect of it in less space than a good size textbook. Also, if we dealt with all of the basics of feasibility studies and report preparation, we would cover a lot of material available in the literature, and would have to minimize our editorial comments. In view of these limiting realities, we have chosen to discuss selected facets of the subject, and to provide several comments which stem from our personal experiences during the past 20 years. "Think Ahead" hen someone is undergoing training to command a large ship, the following short phrase is engraved in his memory: "Think Ahead." The reason is simple enough. A battleship, aircraft carrier or oil tanker cannot change directions quickly, and if one waits to a what the other ship is going to do, there may be twisted metal and bodies scattered all over the ocean floor. The commanding officer has to use radar, forward rind aft lookouts, experience, common sense, intuition, weather forecasts, and everything else available to him to avoid trouble. Remember the USS Stark, and the fate of its captain? The fact the Stark was hit by a "friendly" missile didn't lessen the damage. How about running into a mine? Is it an excuse that no one thought about the possibility of a minefield ahead of the ship? The point is, relative to feasibility studies, that its prospective authors, and especially the commander of the efforts required to create it, must "think ahead" from the moment of their association with 4 mining activity. An open pit mine design system should have the characteristics of being flexible, versatile, and simple. All of these characteristics are necessary for producing a dynamic mine design. In other words, a design that can be improved, updated, and implemented. Flexibility is an important characteristic due to changing times. For example, the effects of a changing economy, increased knowledge of the mineral deposit, or improvements in mining technology can result in a considerable, if not a complete change in the long range mining plans. Since the short range mining plans are based on the long range mining plans, they will-also be effected. Also, it is very important to validate the information used in the design or the design itself. This means the system should have the flexibility of being able, not only to detect, but to correct errors. Versatility is another important characteristic of a mine design system due to the wide range of situations that may appear. First, a design system must be able to handle both long and short term planning. This is necessary because of the variability in the definition of a time range. Second, a design system must be able to handle different types of deposits. Special emphasis must be placed on this issue, because many deposits, if not the majority, do not fit predefined categories such as bedded, massive, or roll-front, etc . . . Furthermore, the true test of the versatility of a design system is not only the ability to create an ultimate design but also to schedule sequences for this design. Thus, the versatility of being capable to design with a variety of time ranges, variety of deposit types, and scheduling are all important characteristics of the design system.

THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT IN PLANT SAFETY Safe Production In plant management, safe production is an ideal. It becomes reality when: 1. Plant employees work in healthful and safe conditions. 2. Plant safety is in harmony with productivity. 3. Worker absenteeism and turnover are low-the work force is stable. Plant management must apply its talents, skills, and resources to build and maintain the foundations of safe production on a system of policies, procedures, and attitudes. It must do so by marshaling all managerial functions - staffing, direction, control, innovation, and representation-toward that goal. Ideally, a plant safety program is proactive. Management should plan and implement safety activities that are aimed at prevention. Past accidents-accomplished facts-should not be the sole guide of future actions. In other words, positive preventive measures, not the fewness of accidents are the criteria for safety production. An ideal safety program is one which is cost effective. Management should view plant safety as part of a broader program-loss control. Loss control includes prevention of fires and other accidents, unhealthful conditions, and occurrences that cause bodily injury, illness, property loss, or damage. Management evaluates the employees' productivity and safety. An effective training program aimed at loss control is the hallmark of safe production. Ideally, both labor and management should be well versed in safety. They believe in the premise that work-related injury and illness, as well as property loss and damage from fire and other accidents, are manageable and preventable. Such belief prompts them to learn more about the work process and potential hazards associated with each job. They also learn how to expect and prevent fues and other accidents, and respond to emergencies at the plant. Plant management determines which individuals or groups of employees are accountable for the following functions:

The production of soda ash from trona (sodium sesquicarbonate, Na2CO3•NaHCO3•2H2O) resources has completely displaced the production of synthetic soda ash in the USA. Further, the utilization of other trona resources is under consideration in China, Turkey, etc. Recent research has been concerned with the development of flotation technology for the trona industry. In this regard studies on the flotation behavior of sodium carbonate salts: trona, sodium carbonate monohydrate and decahydrate, as well as the flotation behavior of sodium bicarbonate, are reported for both cationic (dodecyl ammonium hydrochloride) and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate) collectors. It has been found that strong flotation of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can be achieved with 100% recovery, while the other sodium carbonate salts do not float well. These results have been explained by FTIR analysis of aqueous solutions of Na2CO3and NaHCO3in a range of concentrations from very dilute to saturated conditions. The changes in the shape of the O-H stretching band of water are correlated with the flotation behavior of Na2CO3salts and NaHCO3. In addition, the absorption band of the carbonate ion at ca. 1385 cm-1is used to monitor its interactions with water and/or other ions in solution. The infrared results demonstrate thatNa2CO3acts as a water structure maker, leading to an extensively hydrated surface that accounts for the poor flotation of most sodium carbonate salts. In contrast, NaHCO3does not have this characteristic and consequently complete flotation is possible with both cationic and anionic collectors. These results support the previous water structure analysis for soluble salt flotation of alkali halides and other oxyanion salts.

The consumption of industrial minerals, like most other commodities produced from the earth, depends on the demand for the goods and services that use these materials. Minerals are not generally used directly by final consumers (table salt is a notable exception) but instead are used to either make products that are then purchased by customers, or the minerals are used to make industrial products that eventually contribute towards producing other goods and services. Therefore the demand for industrial minerals in most uses is derived from the ultimate demand for goods and services by consumers. The problem for producers of industrial minerals is that the demand for their mineral product fluctuates greatly in response to the changes in the production of goods and services over the course of the business cycle. In this respect, the producers of industrial mineral are innocent victims, subject to market fluctuations outside of their control. Because the demand for most minerals depends on the demand for the product and because minerals typically make up a minor portion of the costs of producing the product, changes in the price of the mineral often do not influence demand for it to a significant degree in the short run. This is described as a very low price elasticity of demand, as shown by the steep slope of the hypothetical demand curve in Figure 1. This demand curve shows that changing the price of the mineral does not alter the quantity demanded very much, but shifts in the demand curve will be the important determinant of the quantity of the mine.ra1 that is sold. The shifts are caused by the changing demand for the products using the mineral over the course of the business cycle.

Decision-making in exploration deals with experience, knowledge, and sometimes faith, but very often financing and profit, mineral resource aspects, employment, and general political ambitions are parts of the scene. At one end of this spectrum, there is the prospector and his decision on the actual project. The exploration business now expands from its pioneering phase for the benefit of a single company to a wider spectrum which includes the benefit of the large mining consortium and a national development program. Its objectives are also to maintain employment and to favor long-term stability in a mining district or a mining company. The prospector then has new aspects and questions to consider such as, what to do in mining districts where there is a shortage of ore resources but there are still useful investments in mines, processing plants, etc. To analyze the exploration process, therefore, seems to be of great importance in a time of rapidly changing conditions. As in other areas of complex decision-making, for example, in the fields of investments, of production, and of the armed forces, computers most certainly have an important role to play in future exploration decision-making systems. However, we must first analyze our own business as closely as possible to find out what kind of information we need, i.e., why we recommend an exploration program as a good or a poor one. An important part of the debate about exploration is the case study. Case studies on exploration are few and most of those written are only about successful exploration programs. Where are the case studies of the failures and the not so successful programs? Every prospector knows that the majority of exploration projects fail. Consequently, the most important experience seems to be hidden in the failures.

"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. After the war that was nearing an end In early 1945, regular consulting work for Bralorne, the Bradleys, Pennsalt Chemical Co., and a directorship and occasional consulting for Homestake Mining Co. made it almost certain that in spite of my 61 years I would have enough work to feed my family. But this routine work would not provide enough income to lay up funds for the inevitable future when I could no longer do arduous work. And it would not give me the adventure that had first lured me into mining. Therefore I was greatly relieved as well as pleased when, in the 18 months from April 1945 to November 1946, I was asked to make three of the most adventurous as well as profitable examinations that ever came my way. Pati[n]o Mines, Bolivia The first of the exciting jobs was an examination of the Pati[n]o tin mines in Bolivia. After I had unsuccessfully tried to induce Anaconda to purchase these mines In 1915, the World War I crisis that had forced the half-Indian accountant to try to sell the mines had come to an end. The European market for tin improved dramatically, and "Don Simon" was able to borrow money for expenses while the concentrates were still In Bolivia. He took advantage of the favorable conditions by buying adjacent properties and increasing development work until his Bolivian tin mines were the greatest in the world. And his daughter had marled the French Count de Boisrouvain and was cutting a swath In high International society. Pati[n]o wanted to get rid of the drudgery of running a complicated mining Industry in a remote area In Bolivia when the fleshpots of Paris were much more seductive. An added incentive was the fact that his miners had become unruly and had even threatened his 11fe.

The colloidal stability of synthetic silica spheres with clean, methylated and dehydroxylated sur¬faces was studied at different concentrations of dissolved gas and KCl electrolyte at a fixed pH of 4.2. A classic stability ratio/electrolyte concentration analysis shows that hydrophobic, methy¬lated particles undergo faster rates of aggregation with increasing concentrations of dissolved carbon dioxide. Similar data for hydrophilic particles and dehydroxylated particles show no change as a function of dissolved carbon dioxide concentration. Zeta potential data behave simi¬larly, showing a strong influence of dissolved gas only for methylated particles. The results are interpreted in terms of DLVO theory, with the surface-to-surface interaction dominated by the presence of very small protruding bubbles. Direct evidence for the existence of these very small gas bubbles (or "nanobubbles") was obtained using tapping mode atomic force microscopy. Small bubbles do not form on smooth, hydrophilic, or dehydroxylated silicon oxide water sur¬faces immersed in aqueous solutions under known levels of gas supersaturation. Randomly dis¬tributed small bubbles were observed over the whole surface of observation on methylated surfaces of controlled roughness. Bubbles formed on rough, methylated surfaces were larger and less-densely distributed than those on a smooth surface of similar hydrophobicity. The process of bubble coalescence was observed as a function of time. The macroscopic contact angle, measured with respect to the aqueous or gas phase, is very different from the microscopic contact angle detected by TMAFM and appears to be due to the influence of line tension at the pinned three¬phase contact line. The latter has a value of -3 x 10-10 N and acts to stabilize the small bubbles, flattening them and thereby reducing the Laplace pressure.

DOUG HALBE: The kickoff speaker, and my unanimous choice, is Joe Keane. Joe was born in Butte, Montana, and began his association with the mining industry as an under- ground miner at age 16. Currently he is president of KD Engineering and Metcon Research. He had it lucky when he went to school because there were only 44 elements in the periodic table, I understand. [laughter] Here's Joe. JOE KEANE: I'm doing this under protest. Maybe we can start the slides. Mr. Halbe gave me this topic, but I don't like it. I don't like Mr. Halbe either [laughter] because of the way he shanghaied me into this. He called me up on the phone and said this is what you're going to speak about: "Five Things I Never Want to See Again in Plant Design," and I said, "Huh!" Then I started getting stuff from SME about how to make a presentation. I have decided to change the title to "More Than Five Things I Never Want to See in Plant Design," since you can't have a completely negative speech; you have to have other topics. So we will have some other, not completely nonrelated, topics to sort of break the tension. I tried to find a joke to open with. I talked to Omar Mutati. All of his jokes were either about Bill Clinton, our beloved President, or they were too filthy to say in a mixed group. [laughter] So I decided to start this out with a profound statement. The pro- found statement is, "The meek shall inherit the earth, but not the mineral rights," [laughter] by J. Paul Getty. J. Paul Getty was one of my favorite guys because when a real obnoxious reporter asked him one day, "How can I become wealthy?" he said, "Drill for oil and find it."

WISEDA Ltd. has introduced a 220 ton capacity, two-axle rear dump, diesel-electric truck for the world-wide large open-pit mining industry. Design features and components selected in the development of this vehicle will be presented along with operating experience and a brief history of rear dump truck evolution.

The emergence of residuals management as a planning and management tool in the mineral industry has been recently accelerated by the proliferation of environmental regulation and its associated costs. Residuals management practices allow for the early determination and integration of both production and environmental goals in the development of management strategies to arrive at the most cost effective, environ- mentally sound solution. The term residuals management was in actuality derived from the substitution of the word residual for the term ?pollutant? or ?waste?. A residual can be defined as a non-product output having no value in existing markets or a value less than the cost of marketing it. The values of the residual can be determined by time, technology, government policy, market conditions, etc. Residuals basically fit into two classes -- materials which are composed of liquid, gaseous or solids; and, energy, which mainly consists of heat and noise. These residuals are interrelated and can be modified by adding materials and/ or energy, which also may become a residual; thus, lending themselves to alternate disposal schemes to control the adverse effects.

A review and comparison is made of the circuitry utilized for dc crane control systems. Anti-parallel three phase full wave thyristor bridges for dc motor reversing and speed control are compared with a single three phase full wave thyristor bridge for speed control and either contactor or static switching for reversing control to obtain complete four quadrant operation for crane material handling. In recent years the Harnischfeger Corporation has developed a solid state adjustable voltage control system to control the speed and direction of dc motors for crane applications and handling materia1.1 Shunt wound dc motors are utilized and speed is controlled in the motor base speed operating region at constant torque by a thyristor, silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), adjust- able armature voltage supply. The three phase thyristor bridge is the power controlling element of the dc adjustable voltage control. ELECTROTORQUE is the Harnischfeger Corporation registered trade name for this type of drive system. By controlling the gating signals or firing pulses to the thyristor bridge SCR's the dc output voltage can be varied over a wide range. This range is limited only by the magnitude of the ac applied voltage. To obtain operation of the motor in both directions two thristor bridges are connected in an anti-parallel arrangement. A typical schematic for two anti-parallel connected three phase SCR bridges is shown in Figure 1.

Improvements which have been made in commericial flotation systems during the past fifty years have resulted more from trial and error methods in the mill than from research in the laboratory. Research has often provided explanations of why mill changes have improved the metallurgical process. Hopefully, in the next fifty years, changes in mill flowsheets will come about, primarily, as a result of research work. However, since minerals, in their infinite variety, cannot be reduced to a standard state, research on commercial ores will have only a local utility, and research on pure minerals will have little commercial application. What will emerge from research on pure systems are mechanisms of adsorption, and this in turn may throw some light on the very much more complex adsorption processes taking place in the pulps of commercial ores. Quartz, without a doubt, has been the subject of more research effort than any other mineral, but we are still a long way from completely understanding its behavior in flo¬tation. Hematite and calcite have received considerably less attention. Ores containing a mixture of all three minerals, however, are commercially important, and the iron deposits in Alabama have been extensively studied by the United States Bureau of Mines (1). The literature reveals no reports of research on synthetic mixtures of all three.

"Prospecting and Exploration. Since the Lake Superior ores occur in pockets or distinct bodies and vary much as to character and location, the actual mining of the ores is preceded by much work of an exploratory character. This work includes prospecting and exploration.Prospecting is the term generally applied to the quest for surface indications of ore, or the conditions which would warrant the expectation of finding ore in the vicinity. It includes such 'operations as geological examination, dip needle work, shallow test-pitting, and trenching. The ore bodies of the Mesabi Range are non-magnetic, and dip needle prospecting is therefore valueless. On the Cuyuna range, however, magnetic attraction as evidenced by the dip needle has been extensively employed as a guide to the location of ore deposits; in other localities it has found limited application.Drill Exploration. After the presence of an ore deposit is known or suspected, resort is generally had to exploration by means of diamond or churn drills. On the old ranges geological conditions generally make this manner of ascertaining the exact limits of an ore deposit impracticable; so, if two or three adjacent drill holes develop considerable depths of ore, the sinking of a shaft for underground exploration, development and mining is generally considered warranted. On the Mesabi Range, however, the flat-lying and comparatively shallow characteristics of the ore formation warrant much more extensive drill explorations. On this range, then, an ore body 'is almost invariably followed· out with the drills, and its limits are determined to the point where the complete plan of development can be worked out in advance of actual mining operations"

This one day field trip is sponsored by the Denver Region Exploration Geologists? Society, May 14th 2009. The trip highlights major geologic features and some notable uranium occurrences along the north-south mountain-basin boundary southwest of Denver and continuing north to Fort Collins, Colorado. Uranium deposits visited include sandstone?hosted roll front type and polymetallic veins hosted in metamorphic rocks. A replacement ?episyenite? type occurrence is considered via description and hand samples but is not visited owing to logistical constraints. Recovery methods addressed include underground mining and in-situ leach recovery. Samples of Precambrian basement rocks, deposit host rocks, uranium ore samples, and ore polished sections viewed by reflected light microscopy will be available. A road map showing the locations of the stops serves as the front cover of this field guide. The Robinson episyenite-hosted occurrence (not visited) is labeled as Stop 6. A stratigraphic column is provided which shows the position of the host rocks at each stop (Figure 1-1).

This paper covers the construction and operation of the Grate-Kiln system at the Humboldt Mine. The mine concentrator and pellet plant are located approximately 14 miles West of Ishpeming, Michigan, on the Marquette iron Range. Production of pellets began in mid-July, 1960.
